I N T H I S I S S U E Experience world-class arts and culture here in Columbia this fall. Our city is brimming with talented artists who are expressing their creativity in the most beautiful ways.

We sat down with Caitlin Bright to learn more about Tapp’s Outpost, and how she uses her role of Executive Director to uplift local artists and works of art. 50

The Sound of Columbia Close your eyes and listen: our city has a natural rhythm and music all of its own, but if you listen closely, you’ll hear the unmistakable sound of our music scene. Musicians in our community are rising up to create new music for us to experience. Music that we can dance to, music that has us singing along, music that takes us back to a fun memory. Turn the pages of our Fall Arts & Culture issue, and learn about the musicians that play a part in creating the melodies that stream through Columbia and provide the music for our community. 45

Cultivating the Art Scene in

Columbia

A note from Fig

Pictured: Learn more about the upcoming Mahogany Music Festival at the Koger Center on page 20!

Our city is brimming with the excitement and the untapped potential that comes with the beginning of a new season. The summer heat is fading and the days are getting shorter, but our social calendars are filling up with both in-person and virtual events as we celebrate a new school year, the beginning of football season, and the return of live theatre and some of our favorite outdoor festivals. Ready or not: Fall is coming! As I think of fall and what the next season holds, my mind goes to the garden that my family and I have growing out in our yard. We’ll be ripping up our work from the summer, planting new seeds in early September, and harvesting our fall crop just in time for Thanksgiving. A lot of preparation, planning, work, and growth will happen before we’re able to enjoy the fruits of our labor. It’s the same way for artists when it comes to creating a new work of art, just on a much larger scale. Thousands of hours go into finding inspiration, sketching painting, playing, failing, learning, enduring pain, perfecting the process, and practicing over and over again to culminate in a single painting for us to enjoy, a ISSU E 32

performance to see and listen to, a play for us to get lost in, or an architectural design that inspires. In this issue, we’re focused in on some of the artists that are helping to set the stage for Columbia’s music scene. They’re shaping it one performance and one new listener at a time. Every new fan, every new t-shirt sale, every record purchased… all of it makes a difference to our local musicians. When you support a local artist, you’re not just supporting a neighbor, you’re supporting a growing, vibrant arts scene in Columbia that we all want to see thrive. It’s one of the things that makes our city a beautiful place. We encourage you to be a champion for the arts this season. Find new artwork for your home, take in a theatrical performance or a ballet, listen to a new band, wear your favorite fashion designers, dive into an artisan culinary experience… enjoy the fruits of the labor put in by all of the creatives that call Columbia home. We know we will be! HAPPY FALL! BRYNLEY FARR & THE FIG TEAM

Columbia’s top cultural district In the heart of downtown Columbia, you’ll find one of only eight formally designated South Carolina Cultural Districts: The Vista. The Vista doesn’t play second fiddle to anyone when it comes to arts and entertainment, as this designation highlights the district’s commitment to artistic entrepreneurship, to providing space for creative expression, and to preserving its cultural, architectural, and historical heritage. Art gallery openings, live theatre, orchestral performances, Broadway musicals, and new murals by local artists? The Vista has it all!

It’s music to our ears—the UofSC School of Music will host the Mahogany Music Festival to recognize contributions of classical artists of African descent, September 9–11, 2021. Highlights include concerts at the Koger Center for the Arts featuring Vanessa Williams and The Colour of Music Festival Orchestra. More information at KogerCenterForTheArts.com

Spotlight Shannon Tallent A S A C O L U M B I A N AT I V E , Shannon Tallent has always found the culture of our community to be inviting. Wherever your interests lie, be they sports, arts, music, or food, she believes you can find a group to invite you in and collectively celebrate these interests together, a philosophy that also extends to our small-business community. “Over the last year, we’ve had to redefine how we go about our daily lives, as well as how we stay involved in the community and our shared interest groups,” says Shannon. “Now that Columbia is getting back to the ‘new normal,’ we may go back to some of our old ways of doing things. Since our personal culture has had to change, however, it is also very important that a company takes a look at how their business culture has changed.” With over 15 years of multi-industry human resources experience, she now brings her expertise working with apartment management companies, trucking companies, veterinarian offices, pharmacies, and many other businesses to assist local entrepreneurs in creating, developing, and implementing tailored employment processes that provide organizational structure for their business needs. “Businesses that have made modifications over the last year will need to continue to evolve and, therefore, the culture will evolve,” she explains. “Some employees will continue to work from home, while others will take on a hybrid model. Zoom happy hours and team building exercises may continue while holding some inperson events.” “The key is that businesses need to redefine their culture post-pandemic in order to attract and retain the best talent,” Shannon adds. “Do not lose out on talent because individuals have to come back to the office 100% or now have to wear business attire Monday through Friday when workout clothes were acceptable for a Zoom meeting last week. Now is the time to Redefine!” STallent@TallentHRConsulting.com

The art of play We suddenly feel like kids again! This February, JSA welcomed Bagel to our team! He’s cute, he’s cuddly, and he is ready to chat at your child’s next session. He works closely with Brooke Davis, LISW-CP, and Sheena Vallabh, LMFT, to reach all young ages with art and play. Brooke and Sheena pull out games, sand trays, puppets, songs, cards, markers, feathers, and sometimes... cookies to help children find tools to express feelings they might have no words for and to highlight strengths they already own. Art and play help with the next steps, too... understanding, accepting, and healing. At the end of each session, everyone gets to play with Bagel. “This is the most important part,” he says. We just might agree, Bagel!

Family-owned and family-grown It’s been all about family and fresh produce from the beginning. In 1925, the late Walter and Ernestine Rawl planted their first crop farm, and in the 96 years since then, it has grown into a bountiful family-owned business that harvests outstanding greens and speciality vegetables. Today, WP Rawl is still a “family farm” as they have nine family members working on the dream that was started several generations ago. It does not matter how much produce they yield from their fields (and it’s a lot!) or how many stores their greens are featured in, their farm still continues to cultivate a close-knit culture of family with their 650+ team members.

L I S T E N C L O S E LY. . . Everybody’s got a story about the first concert that they ever went to, and around Columbia, you’ll often find that those stories include a local band or artist and a hidden hole-in-the-wall venue that you’d only know about if you were a local. As Columbia grew, so did the music scene around town. You could catch live music almost every single night of the week from shows at New Brookland Tavern to live music at Halls Chophouse, an outdoor music series at the West Columbia Riverwalk and Amphitheatre, upand-coming artists at local coffee shops on Friday nights, and more. Everywhere you listened—music. When the pandemic’s reach made it to our community, the music scene, alongside the rest of the city, shut down. There were no street performances during Soda

City Market. There was no jazzy trio livening up the lobby at Hotel Trundle on First Thursday. Instead of having multiple stages rocking with music throughout the day and into the evening, Five Points was silent on St. Patrick’s Day for two years in a row. Weekend nights were much quieter, less lively as we missed out on our favorite musical acts taking stage around town. As our city has opened back up over the last few months, live music is dashing back into our lives in new ways. Our favorite bands, solo acts, and combos are digging deep to create ways to bring us live music in safe environments. Columbia’s local music scene is rebounding, and coming back stronger than ever with a robust variety of unique artists who all bring their own signature sound to town. The venues around town

have opened up their doors, stages, patios, rooftops, and sidewalks to create space for musicians to share their musical gifts with our community. Are you in the mood to catch up with friends as live music plays in the background? Columbia’s got it. Want to spend the night dancing away to upbeat tunes? There’s a venue for that, too. Ready to enjoy the outdoors with your family and hear great live music? You already know—there’s a spot in town just right for that. Listen closely… and you’ll hear the sweet sounds of Columbia’s music scene turning it up a notch as we head into the fall. Who are you hoping to catch live this season? Turn the page as we introduce you to six local bands who are creating a name for themselves around town. 45

“What makes Columbia’s art scene special is our grit. We’re a bit unpolished, unfinished, and scrappy. We create art in the nooks and crannies of our city where there wasn’t any before. Our favorite part of this scene is its people, by far. The embrace of community in our city is unparalleled. Of course, a band can never truly express their gratitude for people showing up to shows, listening online, buying merch, spreading the word to friends, and all of those other traditional forms of support, but a person can also help our scene by engaging in our local arts and culture as much as possible. Whether it’s heading down to the record shop, strolling for a cup of coffee, or listening to live music at dinner before heading to a flick on Main Street, our art scene is undoubtedly intertwined. By supporting our art scene in any capacity you’re able to, you are inevitably lifting all of us up.”

“All of the shows in Columbia are so much fun! One of my fondest memories is when The Week Sisters played at The WarMouth. They’re this true South Carolina gospel group and the way they sing makes me feel so uplifted. I felt lucky to have had the opportunity to witness that. I go and see live music in Columbia any time I’m able, and I appreciate all of them. Most of these artists do it out of love, so if you want to support local art, show some love, and buy something they made.” 46

“I think the most special part of the Columbia music scene is its total lack of pretentiousness. It’s a scene that isn’t wrapped up in ego, and I love that about it. I just like being a fly on the wall here and doing anything I can to help build the scene a little. The community can support local artists in a ton of different ways. See a show, buy a record, choose your own adventure… but I think the best thing to do is just listen to the ridiculously good music that this town has to offer. That’s the end goal: for music to be heard and for art to be seen.”

There is also a great deal of cross-pollination between bands and artists from different genres that is really exciting and exposes audiences to distinct flavors of music from diverse local acts. We played a show with H3RO, Rex Darling, Death Ray Robin, and Milo The Great recently, and it was a great example of how bringing different genres and audiences together can foster a diverse, kick-ass music scene.” 47

“I’ve lived in quite a few places and I’d say that I’ve never been somewhere that was so supportive musician-wise. Most of the bands really want to see each other succeed, and that’s across genres. They spur one another on by coming out to see each other’s shows and by buying one another’s records. There’s usually some weird animosity and jealousy that comes with the music bubble a locale creates but Columbia by in large, as I’ve experienced it, isn’t like that. We celebrate one another’s successes, that way everybody wins. If you’re out hearing live music that speaks to you the listener, then go tell the musician how much you enjoyed it. You’d be surprised how many musicians leave the stage disheartened by their performance—we are artists after all.”

“Our favorite memory from a show here in Columbia was in 2018. After a 4-year hiatus, Stagbriar returned to the stage to headline New Brookland Tavern’s ‘Skanksgiving.’ Having the crowd enthusiastically sing along to songs you never thought you’d play live again was the kind of reassurance we needed to give the project a fullsend effort and record a second record in 2019. It sounds simple… but you can best support local musicians by buying our stuff, coming to shows, and telling your friends. Spotify listens will never pay the bills, but come to the show and buy a couple of t-shirts and a record. Local bands thrive on merch and ticket sales. Those dollars will mean so much more to a local band than any major label or download service.” 48

Don’t forget to support your local venues! NEW BROOKLAND TA V E R N New Brookland Tavern, Columbia’s oldest continuously running music venue, is the main hub for local artists of all genres of music to showcase their talents. Authentic | Leading the way through innovation and example are still struggling to make it to the next year due to the curtailment of funding and sales revenue, Caitlin highlights the importance of thinking outside the box, building community relationships, and continuing to produce a number of high-quality arts experiences in an inclusive and welcoming space for Columbia’s unique creators. “Columbia is filled with thinkers and dreamers,” Caitlin reflects. “The arts community is unique in that the makers in this community are somewhat sheltered from the scope and trajectory of global art trends, meaning that even though the work and projects they create might resemble something that has been presented somewhere else, it’s derived from the perception, exposure, and interaction of our immediate community, and so it tells a beautiful story about community specifically for Columbia.”

Authentic Caitlin Bright Since 2011, the role of Tapp’s Outpost (formerly Tapp’s Arts Center) in Columbia’s arts ecosystem has been to nurture emerging and underrepresented artists in our community. Whether it’s building temporary floating walls for an exhibition or music performance, or blowing up baby pools for a fashion shoot, the fearless Outpost team led by Executive Director Caitlin Bright accepts whatever adventure presents itself. Having lived and worked extensively with artists and arts organizations all over the world—including Brooklyn, NY; Venice, Italy; and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba—Caitlin’s personal and professional trajectory can be 50

described as a fluid mix of experiences guided by a constant love for creative production. “My experiences and opportunities in the beginning were mostly because I had an adventurous spirit, negotiated my fears to the possibility of failure (an inevitability for all of us in life), and probably in large part simply due to the beautiful naivety of youth letting me dive head first into unfamiliar worlds,” she notes. “I have never said ‘no’ to an opportunity just because it wasn’t exactly what I thought art production was ‘supposed’ to be, and that has built an eclectic repertoire to draw from, which has turned into an asset in helping artists today.” At a time when local arts organizations

Caitlin’s sense of adventure reflects not only on Tapp’s vital role in the local arts community, but also in the way she experiences Columbia. “Outside of work, I like to have miniadventures, so this means lots of river trips, roller coasters, and travels,” she goes on to say. “I also love Five Points’ entrepreneurs! Sunrise Artisan Bath and Body, Papa Jazz, Loose Lucy’s… these are all amazing spaces run by amazing people. Foodwise, I love Pho Viet, Black Rooster, Chubby’s Burgers… Columbia does not lack in flavor!” “We love art and understand the power of culture in a thriving city,” Caitlin adds. “We would love to encourage Fig readers to dare to be bold and adventurous, go into unfamiliar territory—whether it’s the theatre, an art gallery, or a rock concert/rap show/jazz performance—and celebrate the multifaceted wonderment that is Columbia, South Carolina!”

Social Mission | Making a difference in the lives of others That’s when Congaree Riverkeeper, our river watchdog, steps in, monitoring and cleaning up our waterways from trash and debris, reporting and holding polluters accountable, and promoting sustainable water policies. “Congaree Riverkeeper has been working to protect the Broad, Lower Saluda, and Congaree rivers for more than 12 years, with a variety of programs that go from cleanups and water quality monitoring to river patrols and water policy work,” adds Bill Stangler, Riverkeeper’s Executive Director. “The basic, fundamental idea behind our nonprofit, however, is that these rivers belong to each and every one of us. And, as more people get to experience our waterways and see how amazing they are, I know they’ll want to join the fight for clean water and healthy rivers.”

Social Mission Congaree Riverkeeper T R A H E R N C O O K , also known as Easel Cathedral, has mastered the art of plein-air paintings like few other local artists. Made in the open air, outside the confines of studio walls, and reminiscent of French impressionism, each of his artworks tells a story of life moving all around him in an experiential style that reflects the water, air, greenery, sunlight, shade, and delight of the space-time fraction it was created in. He’s often visited by his muses at the Congaree River, whose 689-sq. mi. watershed is intrinsically tied to Columbia’s history and its current natural landscape. Home to a diverse ecosystem, including migrant and resident birds, fish and mussels, and threatened and endangered flora and fauna species,

the Congaree River is, in fact, the result of a merging of the Broad and Saluda rivers just above the Gervais Street bridge in Columbia. The Congaree and its satellite streams are also classified as “freshwater” by the Department of Health and Environmental Control, which means they are suitable for human recreational purposes, industrial and agricultural uses, and drinking (after treatment), as well as for the survival and propagation of indigenous aquatic animals and plants. With 28 domestic, industrial, and municipal wastewater dischargers, however, plus 20 surface water withdrawers in numerous locations along the Congaree River, water quantity/quality and aquatic life are always under imminent threat in the South Carolina Midlands. 1001 Washington Street

Wondering how you can be a good steward of the Congaree to ensure it remains a source of creative inspiration for Easel and everyone in Columbia? You can make a difference by lobbying your legislators, volunteering at Congaree Riverkeeper to clean up the rivers, becoming a Riverkeeper member, or donating to the cause. Your support helps keep Bill and his team on the water, at the State House, and at the courthouse, fighting for clean water and healthy rivers. Learn more about Congaree Riverkeeper, the work that they do for the rivers that flow through the Midlands, and how you can make a donation, whether it’s monetary, supplies, or volunteer hours, by visiting congareeriverkeeper.org or by following them on social media (@congareeriverkeeper).

Where curiosity meets creativity

All the world’s a stage, and Hammond School effectively prepares its students to step into the spotlight as they use their talents and creativity to express themselves through their art. Students are immersed in the arts from their first day pre-kindergarten, and are encouraged to grow their skills and discover what they are most passionate about through a multitude of experiences, classes, camps, and workshops offered through their senior year of school. They graduate with a strong background in the arts— music, dance, theatre, visual—whatever medium a child wishes to explore, Hammond is there to guide them.

Ben Lippen Theater: Climbing the Mountain During a year that threatened the private school community with challenges, uncertainty, and loss, Ben Lippen Fine Arts experienced tremendous growth across the board! Specifically in the Theater Program, the 2020-2021 academic year brought an increase in community engagement, artistic achievement, collaboration, and student enrollment.

In August 2020, Mr. Brandon Yoder joined the Falcon Family as the Middle & High School Theater Teacher. Under Mr. Yoder’s leadership, the Fine Arts Department presented a winter performance of The Sound of Music, featuring 91 middle and high school students, and a spring performance of Willy Wonka Kids, featuring 37 lower school students. Together, these two productions sold over 2,100 tickets and presented messages of hope, endurance, and honesty to the Columbia community. In addition to increased engagement with the Columbia community, the 2020-2021 school year brought new artistic achievement to Ben Lippen Theater. With an increased emphasis on musical excellence, the performances of The Sound of Music included accompaniment by the first pit orchestra in the school’s 80-year history. Members of the pit orchestra included local professionals, under

the direction of Mr. Christian Sarazen, Middle & High School Band Teacher at Ben Lippen. Complementing the orchestra were nearly 150 hand-sewn costumes shipped from across the country, multiple set pieces shipped from across the state, and twelve state-of-the-art headset microphones provided by a generous donor.

Of the students involved in this year’s productions, nearly fifty percent were new to theater at Ben Lippen and have found a welcoming home among their castmates and crewmates. The Athletic Department was well-represented in the productions, as members of the football, basketball, soccer, softball, cross country, track and field, tennis, volleyball, swim, and cheer teams joined the cast or crew. The Fine Arts and Athletics departments work together closely to ensure that students can participate in both departments and, as a result, create a stronger and more unified school. Building on growth in community engagement, artistic developments, and student enrollment from the previous school year, Ben Lippen anticipates an ambitious 2021-2022 season. Middle school students will begin the year by presenting Disney’s Frozen Jr. from October 28-30. High school students will follow by presenting Disney’s Newsies from

February 10-12. Finally, lower school students will present Disney’s Lion King Kids from May 5-7.

The philosophy behind this growth is simple—Ben Lippen Fine Arts personifies the motto, “Better Together”. “Better” signifies our commitment to creating music, theater, and art of the highest quality for the glory of God. We teach our students that they are creators who reflect the ultimate Creator, and as a result, we seek to reflect Him well in our work. We practice, grow, and invest because we serve a glorious God. At the same time, “Together” reflects our department’s value of community. We teach our students that their music, art, and theater, are not simply for themselves. Rather, these products are gifts to be given away in service to those around them. We are thankful for God’s blessing on Ben Lippen Fine Arts. If you are committed to creating music, art, and theater of the highest quality and want to invest in the next generation of creators for the glory of God, we would love to connect with you.
