The days are longer, warmer, and perfect for spending outside exploring along the Riverwalk; the trees are beginning to bud with the promise of new leaves, the new spring lines are arriving at the local shops and boutiques, our favorite spring festivals are just around the corner, and our city is beginning to shine with the brilliance of a new season. The new decade is well underway and we’re excited to bring you our first issue of 2020! Our spring issue focuses on living well and being mindful—from simple pleasures like enjoying a hot cup of coffee on a chilly morning to being an advocate for the big pictures of sustainability and building with intention. It’s a reminder to love ourselves, love our places, and love our planet as we welcome the clarity and vision that comes with a new season. Dive headfirst into this issue as we introduce you to the people and the businesses that are invested in making Columbia the best version of itself that it can possibly be. Meet our Fig Authentic, Lou Kennedy, who is not only providing hundreds of jobs for those in our community at Nephron Pharmaceuticals, but she also gives back to our community and is actively working to build it into an even better place to call home. We’re also celebrating the legacy of companies that are celebrating large milestones like familyowned and operated WP Rawl and Wolfe & Taylor
who are celebrating their 95th and 75th anniversaries respectively. There are also companies like ByFarr Design and Loveland Coffee, two small businesses whose teams and businesses have grown to the point of expansion—and they have both chosen to renovate and reuse existing buildings for a new purpose. Authentic: Lou Kennedy It doesn’t take you long to realize just what Nephron Pharmaceuticals President, CEO, and co-owner, Lou Kennedy, loves the most about living and working in Columbia. From the Hilinski’s Hope banner hanging in the lobby of Nephron to the photographs and artwork decorating the walls, it’s clear that Lou has a strong allegiance and love for her alma mater, the University of South Carolina. “What do I enjoy the most about Columbia? My nickname around here is Cock-a-Doodle-Lou,” she said. “So you know that I enjoy when the Gamecocks win!” Lou is as passionate for her team at Nephron and for people in general as she is about the University of South Carolina Gamecocks, and that passion is not to be missed. She is incredibly focused on discovering hidden talents, ones that may have been overlooked or brushed to the side, and helping someone develop that talent. It’s something that she takes great pride in, too. “What brings me the most joy is identifying young folks and helping them reach their potential,” said Lou. “I love to find a skill or talent that they might not be aware they have and watching them bloom. It’s such a rewarding thing to see.” She’s continually inspiring those around her with how incredibly
personable, enthusiastic, and intelligent she is, especially when it comes to teaching those around her. For example, when her sales team needs additional background information, she jumps in and draws out, in fine detail, the evolution of a particular product that Nephron specializes in and can explain all of the chemistry behind it. As she brings in new talent to the company, she’s thinking about what kind of legacy she is scripting for Nephron in the pharmaceutical world, in our community, and within the walls of Nephron for the future generations of the company. “After I turned fifty, I thought to myself, ‘Ok, we’ve done well in business and we’re employing people from around our community and South Carolina. How can we leave the company better than we found it for the next generation?’ I want to make Nephron successful to provide jobs for those in our community, but it’s also a big goal of mine to have broadband access in rural communities so that children have the chance to dream the lives they want to live.” When she’s not at Nephron, she’s busy doing her part to make Columbia a better place for those who live here and those that visit here. Development, Lou serves on boards that are pushing to make Columbia better day by day. She’s seen how much Columbia has changed over the course of her life and she wants to be a vital part of the next chapter of Columbia’s development. “I left Columbia for 35 years and I never anticipated coming back here,” Lou said. “But look at how Columbia has changed. It’s amazing what has come to Columbia—Cola’s, Bourbon, Halls Chophouse, Soda City Market on Main Street every Saturday morning, the Rosewood Crawfish Festival, the Tasty Tomato Festival, and so much more. I’m hopeful to deliver some cool new things to Columbia, too. I am working with Midlands Business Leadership on a plan to create a gateway between The Vista and Main Street, and I am pushing for development along the riverfront from Gervais Street to Blossom Street. How amazing would that be to expand the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center and have an incredible hotel overlooking a park that overlooks the river to West Columbia?” From Nephron to our community, Lou is on a mission to recruit people that want to band together to be a force for change in our community, in our state, and beyond to make it a wonderful place for everyone to call home. 19

Social Mission: Home Works of America AT F I G , W E B E L I E V E I N T H E P OW E R O F A C O M M U N I T Y that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. For our 2020 Social Mission partner, we’ve chosen Home Works of America, an impactful non-profit whose good works contribute to our thriving, local community. Home Works of America is a Christ centered non-profit organization providing home repair services to lowincome homeowners while mentoring and disciplining youth in the process. It was founded in 1996 by Hank Chardos after his daughter came back from a wonderful experience on a mission trip in high school. With a pickup truck, a ladder, and a toolbox, Home Works of America was founded. It grew exponentially over the years—in 2019, Home Works repaired 174 homes—the most in a year since 2009. 3X4
One way that many student volunteers get started with Home Works of America is through volunteering during a week-long Summer Session. Because no experience is necessary for a Summer Session, it’s an easy way to get involved. “Volunteers get a lot out of their weeks spent with us,” said Joe Huggins, Executive Director. “They can make a connection with a new friend that is likely 50–60 years older than them as they get to know the homeowner of the house they are working on. They have the opportunity to see how others have it and realize how blessed they are at home. There’s the camaraderie and teamwork that volunteers experience, along with the experience of doing things that they have never done before like working on a roof, painting, plumbing, putting in a new floor, and more.”
Days are spent renovating homes, learning construction skills, and bringing hope to the homeowners and involve tasks ranging from basic construction work to painting, house cleaning, roofing, and more while the afternoons are spent at a local beach, pool, or ballpark. “The homeowners get even more out of the experience,” said Huggins. “First of all, they know they are loved and cared for. Many of our homeowners are lonely—they either don’t have any children or their kids live far away. A new home for ByFarr Design and Fig! B A C K I N 2 0 0 3 , graphic design was ambiguous—artful and pretty, but not seen as a necessity for a business to succeed. There wasn’t a Facebook or an Instagram, iPhones did not exist yet, and Mac computers were either colorful boxes or a dome with a rotating screen. Graphic design wasn’t a field of study that yielded steady, successful careers. This was the year that ByFarr Design founder and owner, Brynley Farr, graduated high school and decided to major in Graphic Design. There were a lot of skeptics, mostly ones that were worried about her ability to find a job after graduation in her field of study. She worked her way through college waiting tables and discovering how much she enjoyed serving people and making them happy. She also loved creativity and solving problems. Along the way, Brynley heard that to not work a single day in your life, you had to do what you love. She never imagined that simply being kind and handing out business 2 112 S U M T E R S T R E E T
cards in college would lead to where she works today. For the past 8 years, ByFarr Design has lived on the corner of Huger and Gervais Streets in the heart of Columbia’s historic Vista District, nestled in a 1000 square foot open air office. Brynley has worked over the years to surround herself with people far more talented than herself. With lots of hustle, sweat from team members, and support from their clients—ByFarr Design has grown to 8 team members and multiple letterpresses, plus took on the production of Fig Columbia in 2017 and Fig Aiken in 2019. ByFarr has now moved to Sumter Street and a new stage in the business. They have gone from a one room, open air concept to having 4 conference rooms, an open air work environment with an abundance of natural light, a hospitality room complete with a full kitchen, a letterpress print room, and a downstairs area that is altogether 3 times the size

of their space in the Vista. The space was designed by Seed Architecture and built by a lot of hands including Edcon General Contractors, Nation Builders, friends, and family. The interior design was carefully chosen and curated by ByFarr Design’s own Senior Designer, Laura Windham. Today, ByFarr Design is a thriving design & marketing house that produces work that matters for their clients from here in Columbia, throughout the country, and into Europe. ByFarr Design has a marketing team that designs, copywrites, and produces work like the book that you’re holding right now. They produce customer experiences for their clients— from signage to letterpressed stationery and everything in between. In addition to marketing, the group of designers design intricate wedding invitations, websites, logos, and more. They are a small but mighty team that strives to move mountains and to make a difference in the community that they call home. 39

E A C H S P R I N G , hundreds of horses and riders and thousands of spectators descend upon Hitchcock Woods in downtown Aiken for an annual tradition that has taken place every year since 1916, the Aiken Horse Show. Founded by Mrs. Hitchcock 104 years ago, the show brings out some of the best riders around to showcase their talents to help raise funds to maintain Hitchcock Woods. Hitchcock Woods is one of the largest urban forests in the entire country. At 2,100 acres and located in the middle of Aiken’s downtown district, Hitchcock Woods is an established part of the town and serves as a beautiful setting

for hikers, equestrians, dog walkers, runners, nature lovers, and more to enjoy on a daily basis. A social event not to be missed, the Aiken Horse Show is the signature program and fundraising event for the Hitchcock Woods Foundation, the non-profit organization that owns and manages Hitchcock Woods. It’s a 3-day event that brings riders and their horses to Aiken along with countless spectators that either hike or drive the 1 mile path into Hitchcock Woods to the Aiken Horse Show Grounds.
Stakes and continues throughout the weekend with Hunter classes, Children’s classes, Foxhunting classes, Sidesaddle classes, and even family and costume classes. In addition to the riding events, the Aiken Horse Show features a Picnic in the Woods on Friday, a luncheon on Saturday and Sunday, a merchandise tent, and a Silent Auction, all of which help to raise money for the Hitchcock Woods Foundation.
