Here comes the
Sun Little darling, it’s been a long cold lonely winter Little darling, it seems like years since it’s been here Here comes the sun do, do, do Here comes the sun
A note from Fig
And I say... it’s all right These lyrics came to mind as we began our photoshoots for our Spring Lifestyle issue. The festivities and cheer surrounding the holiday season had faded to memories and the Omicron wave brought more quarantining and uncertainty as we entered into January. Then we rounded out the month with Columbia’s first snowfall in 8 years and as breathtaking as it was to see our city blanketed in a layer of powder soft snow, it was a reminder of the cold and dreariness that come with winter. If there’s one thing that I know for sure, it’s that we’re all going to welcome and appreciate the sun this spring! It’s hard to believe, but it has been years since we’ve been able to gather and celebrate as we tend to do in the South in the spring. We’re delighted that with the coming of the new season we will be able to attend events that have
been on hiatus since March 2020, like St. Pat’s in Five Points, Steeplechase, and the Carolina Cup. We can’t wait to get back into the stands at Founders Park as we cheer on the Gamecocks to another win alongside a crowd at full capacity. Along with the sun and the warmth this year will come the sound of live music, cheers from the crowd, galloping horses, children’s laughter, friends catching up with one another, and the clink of glasses as we toast one another. With these events comes a reason to purchase that dress you can’t forget about or those shoes and accessories you’ve been eyeing at the local boutiques in town. In addition to events coming back, spring is a time for renewal. We’ve compiled wellness ideas to try like a renewal facial, outdoor mountain bike trails, meditation, plant-based menu options, and more, and we encourage you to try something new to renew your mind and body. We love our small business community and are honored that we get to work alongside the people that make our city tasty, beautiful, and interesting. Enjoy the sun, it’s going to be all right. WITH GRATITUDE, BRYNLEY FARR & THE FIG TEAM

Wrongful Death Catastrophic Injury Workers’ Compensation
Southern roots If you ask attorney Robert Goings, he’ll tell you that the biggest lessons he learned about practicing law were not ones he learned at law school. Rather, they came from growing up in rural Union County on his family’s farm, where both his grandfather and great grandfather spent their entire lives as farmers living off the land. It was there that the values of fairness, honesty, hard work, dedication, justice, and service to others were engrained in him, and it’s those same values that he centers his law firm, The Goings Law Firm, around. He and his team of attorneys and paralegals will always steer you in the right direction when it comes to legal matters pertaining to wrongful death, catastrophic injury, and workers’ compensation, and they’ll do so with the utmost compassion and respect for you and your family.

Authentic | Leading the way through innovation and example improved infrastructure, we can better serve our residents and attract new businesses to our community.” Beyond that, Aditi wants to use her background in public health to improve not only our community’s health, but also the health of our economy. “It’s important for us to recognize that the well-being of our small businesses is deeply connected to the well-being of our neighborhoods and communities,” Aditi said. “When small businesses do well in Columbia, it results in more resources for our communities and our hard-working families. On the other hand, when people have access to resources that ensure their health and well-being, it strengthens our workforce, and thereby our economy.”
Authentic Dr. Aditi Bussells WITH A PHD IN PUBLIC H E A LT H from the University of South Carolina, a deep passion for the people and local businesses of our community, and a desire to see Columbia continue to be a thriving place for families to call home, Dr. Aditi Bussells was already serving our town well through her work as a public health researcher. Now, after being elected to City of Columbia Council as an at-large member, she’s ready to dive in and make an even bigger difference. “As we navigate out of this pandemic, now more than ever, it’s important to have a public health voice at the table,” Aditi said. “I’m uniquely trained in finding the root causes of problems using data and collaborating with

diverse communities and sectors. Through my involvement in various Columbia area initiatives and projects, I have proven my ability to energize and mobilize people of all walks of life to understand and develop bold solutions for the complex problems facing our community. That’s exactly what I plan to do in city government.” Specifically over the next year, Aditi wants to work closely with city staff and community leaders to improve city processes, streamline communications, and enhance customer service to allow our city government to be more responsive, accountable, and transparent. “It’s the foundation for change,” Aditi said. “My hope is that with an

Personally, Aditi loves going on long walks with her dogs at Saluda Riverwalk because she enjoys the natural beauty found along the river, but she sees other areas that could benefit from improvement. “I’d love to see Finlay Park become a hub for all corners of our city to enjoy the outdoors, whether it is outdoor fitness classes, rock-climbing, or just being able to walk with your family,” Aditi said. “I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues on council to explore how best we can revitalize the beautiful park. I’ve always said that I want Columbia to be the best place to raise a family and open a business. I want people, particularly young people, to choose us over other places. Five to ten years from now, I envision Columbia as a vibrant destination to live, work, and play: a city that is safer, more equitable, and more competitive.”

Sip, savor, stay a while For Hendrix’s Executive Chef Frank Bradley, using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients has never been culinary trend, it’s been a way of life. Growing up on a 2nd generation family owned farm in Columbia, SC, Frank was used to gathering for regular family fish fries and oyster and pig roasts all sourced from the ingredients grown and raised on the farm. His love of the culinary arts took him from Columbia to Atlanta to Charleston and finally back to Columbia where he led the kitchen teams and menu direction for several popular downtown Columbia restaurants. In addition to Nephron Nitrile, Nephron has also begun producing at-home COVID testing kits in their sterile medical manufacturing facility, providing part time job opportunities for dozens of neighbors in our community who are looking for additional income and work experience.
Fig Spotlight: Nephron Pharmaceuticals In July 2021, Nephron Pharmaceuticals owner Lou Kennedy took the stage outside of their state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in West Columbia and promised our community that her company would be at the forefront of providing more American made medical equipment for our hospitals and healthcare workers to use. And if there’s one thing Lou Kennedy does well, it’s fulfilling promises and overdelivering on what she sets out to do. Nephron Nitrile, housed in the new Kennedy Innovation Center at Nephron, will open its doors later this year as they begin to produce medical grade gloves. The spinoff company began as a response to the unprecedented global pandemic as Nephron dreamed and explored all of the ways that they could help Americans, but it’s legacy will be one of bringing over 250 jobs to our community and providing a path towards eliminating our country’s reliance on foreign sources of PPE.

The streets are filled in the early morning hours with runners tackling every distance from 5K to full marathons in the busy spring road race season, highlighted by the Governor’s Cup. It’s a season to be active and to be outside! As we take a look at health and fitness in this issue, we want to introduce you to three fit and fun lifestyles around Columbia that are waiting for you to explore this spring.

Breathe in. Breathe out. Close your eyes and feel the stress begin to dissipate as you begin your yoga flow. A practice that benefits both your mind and body, yoga is an ideal way to get intentional movement into your day. The best part? Yoga can be done by yourself in your house, in a group class at a local studio, in the morning before your day begins, at lunch for a quick break from work, or in the evening. Start your day strong with an early morning flow class at a local studio, like Studio Fire, where you can spend an hour aligning your mind and body for the day ahead. Enjoy a Sunday morning at The Well, LLC with their popular Yoga & Mimosas class where you can relax and unwind with a deep stretch and a refreshing drink. Take advantage of the beautiful spring weather in Columbia and take your yoga practice outside! Many studios offer outdoor classes when the temperatures are just right. Soak in the peace that surrounds you on the banks of the river at Columbia Canal and Riverfront Park or enjoy a sunrise yoga session on the State House Grounds as you watch the Main Street District wake up around you.

For all the
Outdoor Adventurers With state parks and national parks, rivers and a lake, greenways and trails that traverse the state, Columbia is brimming with an outstanding selection of outdoor places to play and explore by land and water. Drop your paddleboard or kayak in the river and paddle to your heart’s content. It’s easy to find a quiet cove on Lake Murray, or a peaceful passageway under the canopy of loblolly pines and cypress trees in Congaree National Park. Want to explore the water in a more leisurely way? Floating down the river in a tube is a popular activity in summer and provides a refreshingly cool way to beat the heat. For the walkers, runners, and bikers, there are a variety of trails and greenways around town that are calling your name this spring as the days get warmer and the sun stays out longer. Get your long runs in as you prepare for the Governor’s Cup on the greenways. Take your bike out to Peak to hop on the Palmetto Trail where it crosses the Broad River. Take a long walk with your family through Sesqui State Park on a weekend afternoon. The biggest question for you this spring: What natural outdoor resource will you take enjoy first?

New beginnings in 2022 Jill Smith + Associates Counseling is growing! With new team members and a new location in Lexington, 2022 is off to a great start. Nicole Tank and Maggie Shumpert are two of the bright new faces on the team. Nicole works with all ages out of the downtown Columbia office while Maggie works with children and teens out of their new Lexington office. Fresh perspectives bring a new energy to the company, especially as both Nicole and Maggie are determined to learn, grow, and train. This is why Jill Smith started her business—so therapists could be stronger together. Good psychotherapy is complex work and requires deep dives into theory and practice. It requires humility and knowing that there is always more to learn and to teach. They love it. Can you tell?

Hand stitched in history Exhibitions at the South Carolina State Museum allow us to unlock and explore diverse stories told through a variety of mediums including recovered artifacts, artwork, photographs, and more. This spring, we encourage you to visit the museum to experience storytelling through a unique medium: Quilts. The current exhibition, Bindings and Betweens, features 43 handmade quilts, each with their own style, design, and history. As you explore this exhibition you will learn more about how the process of quilt making and the materials themselves relate to many of the cultural traditions found through out South Carolina history, dating back to the early 19th century.
The Bindings and Betweens exhibit is open now through May 8, 2022. Book your tickets today!

Initial Sketches
Once they finish the loose detailed layout, they refine each element and block in color to get a final composition. From there, they add in the fine details and textures to complete the piece.
