Welcome to the Summer Small Business Issue of Fig Columbia! This is an issue unlike any other that we have produced. We honestly didn’t know if we’d be able to publish an issue this season. This issue, we’re focusing on the local small businesses that are championing, supporting, and believing in other small businesses in our community, including our own. We are overwhelmed with the support that we received to produce our 27th Fig Columbia. It was made possible through partnerships with Nephron Pharmaceuticals, WP Rawl Farms, Goings Law Firm, The Sweeten Group, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. These businesses specifically partnered with us to help the businesses that have been big Fig supporters throughout the years to help them get back on their feet. Welcome to the Summer Issue of Fig Columbia, an issue that we have completely dedicated to our resilient small business community. I want to first acknowledge the incredible business people that made this issue possible. Thank you, Nephron Pharmaceuticals, for being our Gold Champion and to Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, Goings Law Firm, WP Rawl, and The Sweeten Group for being our Silver Champions. They, along with other small businesses, made this issue possible, and we sincerely appreciate their kindness and support! This letter comes to you from the desk of a small business owner, at a time when our state is cautiously reopening after nearly two months of staying at home. As I write this, Governor McMaster has already opened restaurants for both indoor and outdoor dining, and he’s just announced that spas and salons can open within the week. On March 18, we sent our ByFarr Design and Fig Columbia team of eight home to work remotely. It was a hard time as a business owner—I went through a few dark days. Days when I wondered if we’d ever come to work together as a team again. Would our business survive this? If we did survive, what would the “other side” of this pandemic look like? Could we keep our team employed, how long could we hang on? I talked with my other small business friends about what we were going through, and they shared my worries. I was scared. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. And then I read. I read history because I needed hope. One thing that hit me really hard was that in 1918, 102 years ago, the Spanish Flu Pandemic infected 500 million people around the world, just as WWI was ending. And then in 1929, the stock market crashed and kicked off the Great Depression. Right when our country was getting back on its feet, WWII began. Many lives were lost in all of these events and the world was changed forever. This gave me perspective, a lens to see that the beautiful humans that we call grandparents and great-grandparents have already experienced and survived extraordinary hardship. Not only did they survive, they thrived,
and it’s why we are here today! If they thrived through such hardship, I (we) have it within us to do the same today. We are incredibly blessed being able to live and work, even if it looks completely different from our familiar normal. As for me, I choose a positive outlook. This pandemic has made me realize what I was taking for granted—my health, our small business, my loved ones, teachers, medical staff, date night in a restaurant, shopping, State Park visits with my kids, visiting my grandmothers in person, watching a movie at The Nick, celebrating a wedding with family, for Malfunction Junction traffic, the challenge of finding a parking spot on Main or Devine on a busy day, the ability to go and get my hair cut at the salon, being surrounded each day at work by my team, and simply being around other people. According to sba.gov, there are 418K small businesses in South Carolina which makes up 99.4% of businesses and 46.3% of employees in our state. This edition of Fig Columbia is dedicated to each small business that is fighting and clawing for survival. We aren’t able to feature every small business in our area because unfortunately, many of them are still closed. However, we hope that this issue invigorates you to support the small businesses that you love in whatever way you feel safest doing so! We invite you to join the conversation on our social media channels and let us know the ones you love and the ones that our area simply couldn’t live without. We know that there are hard days ahead, and we can choose the perspective to also know there are hard days behind. Together we will thrive! WHEN SHE FINDS A CAUSE T H AT S H E ’ S PA S S I O N AT E A B O U T, Nephron Pharmaceuticals CEO Lou Kennedy doesn’t hold back. She dives in headfirst and begins brainstorming solutions and opportunities, she ignites conversations with decision makers, and she is relentless in her pursuit of solving the issue. Her problem-solving passion isn’t just limited to her work inside of her company or within the medical industry, either. She’s a champion for our Columbia community and beyond, and right now she’s fighting hard to get South Carolina back to normal as quickly and safely as possible. “Personally, as a business owner, I appreciate the way that Governor McMaster worded South Carolina’s Stay at Home Orders by saying that essential businesses would be able to continue working,” said Lou. “I told our employees from the beginning that COVID-19 was a respiratory distress issue, we make respiratory medicines, we are essential.”
Lou spent time in early May talking with officials at the University of South Carolina about the sanitizing practices Nephron is employing at their facility, which include fogging common areas, offices, and labs with hydrogen peroxide that will kill all germs and viruses for several hours. She hopes that the University can employ this practice to help students and professors return to the classroom feeling safe and secure on campus.

They don’t even know about it. They have no introduction to it because they don’t have reliable access to broadband internet. L O U K E N N E DY

It’s a program that Lou says she wishes she could offer all the time for her employees because of how successful it has been. As a result of the pandemic, Lou is also supporting as many locally owned restaurants as she can and is providing 50 meals every day to her team, making sure the meals are offered to different departments around the company on day and night shifts. She has ordered meals from Blue Marlin, Private Property, Hudson’s, The Kingsman, The Root Cellar, Cantina 76, and more for her employees to enjoy. Nephron has also opened the doors to their in-house pharmacy that is available for employees to shop, and they recently ordered new solar-powered sun umbrellas to add to the rooftop garden. “I think it shined a spotlight on an issue we all probably knew that we had. We knew that there was somebody out in Saluda that couldn’t get connectivity, but what I think it brought into real laser focus is that there are kids off Two Notch Road that don’t have connectivity. There are kids in your child’s district or your child’s class that don’t have the same opportunities that you do because you have WiFi in your home. These children are having to go to a McDonald’s or Starbucks parking lot to do their homework.” The issue goes beyond the e-learning platform though, as South Carolinians in rural areas are falling further behind in healthcare, business, education, workforce training, and more without the reliable access that most urban households have. “The pandemic is what prompted everyone to start looking at the issue
with rural broadband access,” said Lou. “But I try to look at it from three ways. The first is telehealth and telemedicine. Second, we need to have a way for children to learn and to dream. Finally, as we find ourselves in this situation, think of the training that we could do for workforce development by leaving people home as long as possible, setting them up to do things before they even come to the workplace, and we could do e-learning and training.” Lou believes that now is a great time to make a move on increasing the broadband access because of the COVID-19 Funding Packages that are being discussed and implemented in our country. The problem has grown to the point that it needs actions and dollars now to begin to level out the field before the discrepancy between the haves and the have nots gets worse.
“I feel like absolutely the time has come, and I do agree with Congressman Clyburn. We have to look at it as infrastructure in this country meaning roads, highways, bridges, and connectivity. I really like when he says that and I fully support him. There’s more traction now, even more than last summer when Congressman Clyburn first brought it up to me. “If we don’t take care of our own, we may see an economy that is too hard to finally bring back,” Lou said. “If we don’t make sure that the underprivileged and folks that don’t have the same leg up that others do get access to a new way of life or progress or innovation, we might find that segment of our population grows rather than diminishes. It’s up to us to take care of our own and try to do this so that we can offer more to all Americans.”

At the beginning of 2020, these were all words and phrases that didn’t quite fit into our everyday vocabulary. We began to hear them on the nightly news and to see them on social media from our friends living on the West Coast and in places like New York. The reality of each one of them hit us in early March as schools, businesses, restaurants, salons, and state parks began to close their doors and gates and as we retreated to our homes to work, to care for our children, and to do our part to stop the spread.
Though we were social distancing from one another, our community felt more accessible and closer together than ever before. You could catch up with the zookeepers at Riverbanks Zoo from your living room; Trustus Theatre broadcasted plays from previous seasons for date nights at home; barre3 brought their barre workouts from the studio to your impromptu at-home gym; your favorite restaurants provided curbside pick-up; and local breweries and bottle shops opened up for to-go beer orders.
Businesses shifted their operations overnight. As physical doors closed, virtual ones opened up in the form of online shopping, e-learning sessions, live streams of theatrical performances, online workout sessions, and more.
As bleak, dark, and unending as the pandemic has seemed at times, we have also seen the light of hope, promise, and community shine through brighter than ever.
It has been beautiful to see how Columbia and our neighbors have responded to taking on a new challenge unlike anything we’ve ever faced before. Our community was tested five years ago with the Thousand Year Flood and out of it came incredible acts of kindness from strangers, an appreciation for neighbors helping neighbors, and a deep sense of gratitude for those in the service industry like firefighters and police officers. We thought we were resilient then, but it’s unlike the resiliency that we’re seeing in our community now. Columbia, as it has throughout its history, will survive this and will be stronger because of it. Why? Because while we breathe, we hope.

In Columbia, food brings us together. It brings us together inside of restaurants, on Saturday mornings on Main Street, outside of breweries, at tailgates in the fall, in our homes with our family and friends, and even on the city’s most iconic bridge for a beautiful seated supper of over 1,400 people. Columbia has a growing, vibrant food and drink scene with new restaurants and breweries popping up all the time. It’s such a huge part of our culture and it’s why our summer issue of Fig has always been dedicated to celebrating the incredible restaurants, bakeries, and breweries that have made their home here in our city. As we go to print, the food and hospitality industry is slowly beginning to reopen their doors. First with the ability to host customers on outdoor patios and then moving to welcoming customers back inside their dining rooms for the first time since March 18. These local entrepreneurs and their teams have spent the last two months quickly adjusting to online sales, curbside pickup, contactless delivery, and more to be able to keep their business and their livelihoods afloat. They have been innovative and have come up with the most creative solutions to continue providing their food and drink to our community, and our community responded in kind with overwhelming support.
We’re hopeful that every restaurant and brewery reopens this summer. For our 2020 Social Mission Partner, we’ve chosen Home Works of America, an impactful non-profit whose good works contribute to our thriving, local community. Like every other business and non-profit, when the pandemic hit our state, Home Works of America had to find a way to shift their mission work and find unique ways to be able to continue to serve those in our community that need their help. “Unfortunately, poverty does not stop during a pandemic,” said Joe Huggins, Executive Director of Home Works. “Folks still need home repairs and home repair is healthcare. Spotlight: Salute From the Shore Each July, families and friends gather up and down South Carolina’s coastline to celebrate Independence Day together. With their American flags, beach towels, patriotic themed attire, and their favorite beach games, they flock to the shores to spend a day in the sand and in the sun. In 2008, good friends Johnny Folsom and Toddy Smith were enjoying their beach vacation over the 4th of July holiday and thought about how they were enjoying time with family and friends while those in the military were currently away from home, defending our country. They decided that these soldiers needed to be honored, so they created Salute Fromthe Shore as a flyover of the South Carolina Coast to honor our military. “As you know, South Carolina is a very patriotic state,” said Cam Smith, one of the co-founders for SaluteFrom the Shore. “We figured the coast of South Carolina would be a great platform for an audience to gather and show gratitude to the military.”
For the last decade, Salute From the Shore has joined in on the annual 4th of July celebrations with their patriotic flyover and show their appreciation for active duty members, for veterans, and for their families. The flyover spans the entire South Carolina coast as it begins in North Myrtle Beach around 1pm on the 4th and continues down the coastline to conclude just outside of Bluffton. Everyone on the beach— whether you’re in Litchfield, Folly, Kiawah Island, Edisto, Sullivan’s Island, or anywhere in between—has a front row view to the incredible air show. It’s a tradition that has grown over the years as more and more families plan their summer vacations around being at the beach during the first week of July each year. This year’s Salute From the Shore looks to be one of the best ones yet. Two F-16s from Shaw Air Force Base and a C-17 from Charleston Air Force Base will take to the skies first as they start off the Salute shortly after 1pm on July 4th.

Following them will be a fleet of really cool, civilian-owned and flown vintage airplanes. These planes fly slower than the military aircrafts and will extend the fun throughout the afternoon as they make their way down the coastline.
