Gearing up for the holidays in

Columbia Growing up, my sister and I used to play board games at our grandmother's house during the holidays, our favorite being CandyLand. We'd lay on the floor wrapped in blankets, with our stomachs full from the delicious family Christmas meal, nibbling on our dessert of homemade peppermint patties and lady fingers, with the smell of the coffee percolator heating up in the kitchen and the laughter and chatter of family we love in the living room. It was warm and perfect.

Dress from Monkee's of Columbia, earrings from A Little Happy Shop

A note from Fig

Thinking of this season and Columbia, I'm reminded of this beloved childhood memory. I feel like our wonderful small business community is CandyLand. We've all had to navigate the dark Licorice Lagoon, go back to square X, and wade through the molasses swamp. We didn't give up, despite the obstacles along our path. We all kept showing up day in and day out, regardless of supply chain disruptions, hiring challenges, and overall hardship. Although the setbacks were plentiful, the blessings found in 2021 have been abundant. Our resilient community has continued to rally and the future is bright. This holiday season, let's take delight in our city.

We can purchase outfits fit for Queen Frostine and King Kandy from our clothiers and boutiques; we can snack on both healthy and indulgent treats that would make Gramma Nutt proud from our local restaurants, bakeries, and shops; and we can unlock our inner fitness warriors to be able to navigate the Licorice Lagoon and avoid becoming Plumpy the Plumpatroll with the help of our wellness community. Let's not forget about our nonprofit community, one that has done an incredible job of taking care of others during some of the toughest times we've faced. It's now our turn to take care of them, as we pour out our gratefulness into these foundations in the form of volunteer hours, supplies, and monetary donations. As I close out this letter, I invite you to join me in thanking BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina for being our 2021 Small Business Champion and making it possible to include so many small businesses in our issues throughout the year, and to Nephron Pharmaceuticals for making our Holiday Restaurant Guide possible. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. BRYNLEY FARR & THE FIG TEAM

IF THERE’S ONE THING THAT NEPHRON PHARMACEUTICALS OWNER AND CEO LOU KENNEDY IS PASSIONATE ABOUT, it’s supporting the local community in any capacity that she and Nephron Pharmaceuticals can. Whether it's through the production of life-saving medicine used in our hospitals, administering COVID-19 vaccines, hosting a COVID-19 testing site, expanding job opportunity via new product lines, selecting contractors that are from Lexington or Richland counties, or simply buying from small businesses here in town, she puts local at the forefront of her mind when making decisions. “We love the local businesses right here in Columbia,” said Lou. “I’m always encouraging folks to support local restaurants and local businesses, and to keep these establishments up and going. It was so important to us during the height of COVID-19 that we were having

catered lunches from local restaurants and caterers for 50 people or more every single day rotating through our departments.” Supporting local goes beyond the act of purchasing direct from a small business in town. It can come in all forms, including easing the pain brought on by a global pandemic. Nephron Pharmaceuticals is well-versed in how COVID-19 affects people and the medicine needed to help battle it. They are a leading manufacturer of generic respiratory medications, producing affordable, high-quality inhalation solutions and suspension products that treat respiratory conditions. They have also expanded their West Columbia campus over the last 18 months to fulfill additional ways responding to COVID-19, hiring new employees along the way.

“There are so many things that I’m excited about,” said Lou. “I can’t pick just one! We’re about 2-3 weeks away from moving into our new vaccine wing, and that’s something I’ve been excited about: being a part of helping us be a solution to the COVID-19 response and making sure that we’re doing our part for the community and the country. I’m excited about the chance to get the Nephron Nitrile Glove plant opened. We’re also moving into a new injection molding business to make the components that we use and fill right here at Nephron, and the list goes on.” In addition to the new vaccine wing that will provide life-saving vaccinations and the glove plant that will help shore up the country’s dependency on foreign manufacturing for basic medical supplies, Nephron Pharmaceuticals is also working to get at-home testing kits into households across the country and throughout our community.

“We are happy to have been chosen by two different at home test kit companies to kit the product right here at Nephron,” Lou said. “So when you buy an at-home test kit later this year, you might likely receive a kit kitted with parts made here and kitted here, too.” With all the ways that Nephron Pharmaceuticals is leaving a lasting, positive impact on the response to COVID-19, there is one milestone that gives Lou the most pride. “If you ask me now to summarize the last 18 months, I would say that I’m very proud that we reached our 100% fully vaccinated goal here at Nephron,” said Lou. “It’s a safe place to work. It’s a great place to work. And I’m really glad that we were able to pull off our goal with minimal obstacles in less than one month. I think we were the first private sector business to announce we had a 100% vaccination goal, and we did it. That’s a cool deal.”

When she says that her company is 100% fully vaccinated, she’s not talking about a few dozen or even a few hundred employees. Nephron employs nearly 2,000 people—full time employees, part time employees, apprentices, and interns—and they're continuing to grow as they bring new business lines into their production facility. Each employee is vaccinated, and for Lou, that means Nephron Pharmaceuticals is putting their community first by doing their part to reduce the spread of COVID-19. It’s one of the many ways that Lou and Nephron Pharmaceuticals support the local community that they joined in 2014 when they relocated from Orlando, Florida. “We love the fact that we’re based in West Columbia, South Carolina,” said Lou. “Let me tell you why. It’s because it’s a business-friendly county. Our permits were passed in six days when

we first opened—a record! People know that the Southeast is truly a manufacturing-friendly place. What we’re also finding is that we have great talent coming out of all the higher education here in the state, as well as the high schools and technical colleges. That’s a great draw for us employers. We know that we’re going to have the right talent that we need at the right time when we’re ready to go launching new products, new divisions, and so forth. All of those reasons make me proud to have returned home. I never thought I would, but I’m so happy that I did.” For more information, visit nephronpharm.com or follow @nephronpharm on Twitter and Facebook.

Enjoying Supporting Small and Saving Local W H AT I S T H E FA C E O F S M A L L B U S I N E S S I N C O L U M B I A ? Look no further than the Fig issue in your hands right now to see a varied and divergent array of locally imagined, locally inspired, locally crafted, and locally centered small businesses purposed to appeal to and directly meet the tastes and needs of our distinctive Midlands communities. What’s the magic formula for shepherding a small business in our great City of Columbia? Fig, the organic outgrowth of ByFarr Design, a locally owned company that truly exemplifies grass-roots ingenuity, is itself an illustrative model of successful small-business capability. The publication’s purpose, as well as its creative design, craft an engaging format that not only promotes our publicfacing small businesses, but highlights the unique individuals whose talents, savvy, and determination offer products and services that drive Columbia’s economic engine. ByFarr Design has worked closely with Columbia’s Office of Economic Development to create messaging in support of our Support Small Save Local initiative, a project designed to further awareness of the vibrant small enterprises propelling the resilience and growth of our business community. A diverse and revealing cross-section of the variety of our local businesses can be seen in the #SaveLocalColumbia video featured on SupportSmallSaveLocal.com. In addition to the businesses featured in Fig and in the video, there are other local entrepreneurs who have been able to realize both national and international operations, including Van Robotics, REsimplifi, DESA, ValidID, and TerraStride. The City of Columbia’s Office of Economic Development has played a pivotal role in the development of all of these business, and many more as well. Economic Development continues to be available to assist businesses with site visits, finding buildings and acreage, accessing start-up or growth funding, negotiating incentive packages, workforce, logistics, and transportation expertise. Equally, they work with service providers and government offices in identifying new opportunities, customers, and business partners. The principal element of a thriving city is the diversity of its economic ecosystem. Small, locally grown businesses are the fabric and creativity that make our City of Columbia unique, successful, and attractive, and we anticipate further expansion of our small business potential and growth. I can’t wait to see all the new development in the coming years, and also look forward to the variety of commercial ventures that myself, and my family, can call on and support. In May of this year, our community showed our local nonprofits just how much we love them and support the impactful work that they do for our neighbors during Central Carolina Community Foundation's annual Midlands Gives. This day of giving encouraged over 21,000 donations to be made to 479 different nonprofit organizations, totaling a record breaking $3,343,033. Midlands Gives unites us around an 18-hour online giving challenge, but can you imagine the difference we could make if we gifted like we did May twice a year, with the second coming during the holiday season? Open your hearts this December, and make it a personal goal to discover a nonprofit that speaks to you and your family. No matter what your interests are or what causes you are passionate about, we know there is a local foundation that could use your assistance in meeting their mission goals this year. Decide as a family how you'd like to support them as we close out 2021 and ring in 2022. Will you volunteer your time? Will you make a monetary donation in someone's honor as a gift? Will you shop for and gather needed supplies? Flip through the next few pages to meet several local nonprofits and let their stories and missions inspire you this season.

Thanks to the continued investment of time and resources from community members, non-profit Home Works of America is able to provide health and safety repairs at no cost to seniors in need while mentoring our youth in the process. The emotional, physical, and financial burden on elderly, low-income homeowners living with unhealthy homes is one that they are honored to alleviate through year-round compassionate construction.

Mr. H is a Korean War veteran whose plumbing system had failed. He lives alone in Columbia and had been forced to walk to the corner gas station to take care of all his personal hygiene and cooking needs. During several Home Works repair days with student and adult volunteers as well as a local plumbing company, the fresh water supply and drain lines in his bathroom and kitchen were restored. This past Christmas, Mr. H cooked in his kitchen for the first time in more than 3 years! He also received repairs to his front and back entrances that will help with daily mobility for years to come. 48

Hip, hip, hooray—Camp Cole is ready to play! For over a decade, two families dreamed together of creating a safe, accessible, and inspirational gathering camp and retreat in Columbia where groups could connect, share, encourage, and shine. In June of this year, that place became a reality as Camp Cole opened their doors to their first summer of camp. The camp is a place that creates special experiences for deserving kids who might not typically be able to attend camp, and it brings together a community of volunteers who are passionate about providing those experiences. It's a place where everyone can shine.

Social Mission | Making a difference in the lives of others

Learn more about Congaree Riverkeeper, the work that they do for the rivers that flow through the Midlands, and how you can help to foster their mission by visiting congareeriverkeeper.org or by following them on social media (@congareeriverkeeper).

Social Mission Congaree Riverkeeper THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, we have highlighted the work done by our Social Mission partner for 2021 to keep the Broad, Lower Saluda, and Congaree rivers healthy and our waters clean. As a small-but-mighty nonprofit organization led by Bill Stangler in conjunction with a board of directors and a team of volunteers, Congaree Riverkeeper needs your support to keep watching over our waterways. Thankfully, there’s a lot you can do to ensure they can continue to protect our most treasured natural resource. If you don’t engage with the river watchdog of the Midlands yet, the first steps to contribute to their mission are signing up for their e-newsletter, following them on social media, and taking action when they ask. “Of the

things people can do to help, I think the most impactful are to keep informed and be attentive,” says Bill. “We want people to be engaged in river issues, watching out for our calls to action and being vocal advocates when we need them. And we always need more eyes (and noses) on and around the water letting us know about issues.” Ready for the next step? River and stream clean-ups are their most common volunteer activities. By signing up to get your feet wet in a fun, family-friendly atmosphere, you can help to steer the Midlands’ rivers clear from trash and debris, giving Bill’s team the bandwidth they need to build legal cases and work on more complex policy issues outside the water. Armed with awareness about our river levels 1001 Washington Street

and water quality, as well as detailed information from Riverkeeper’s reports and updates, you can additionally call and email our legislators, submit comments on policy decisions, and advocate for our rivers at public meetings, committees, and hearings. If volunteering time to serve Congaree’s cause is not an option for you at present, a monetary donation also makes it possible for them to continue their nonprofit work in our community at a time when public funding and sponsorship opportunities are still curtailed. Whether on a one-time or recurrent basis, your gift ensures that our rivers will remain the pristine resource we rely on for recreation and drinking water. In the end, the health of our rivers affects us all.

Go ahead, close your eyes and take a deep breath. Inhale. Exhale. Take a moment to reflect on all that you personally have been through—mentally, emotionally, and physically—over the last year and a half. It's been a doozy for all of us. As a community, we have worked tirelessly to keep small businesses afloat, we have adapted and learned how to provide schooling for our children at home, we have found new ways to gather and honor the momentous milestones in life, we have faced more things alone than together, and we have done it all with true Southern grace. One thing that has fallen to the wayside throughout it all? Ourselves. Allow 2022 to be the year that you find a reason to focus on both you and your health. Our health and wellness community will lift you up through every stage and season of life as you work towards the best version of yourself. The only question is: When will you start?

Although Dr. Wielenga lived in Columbia over ten years ago, she recently decided to make it her permanent residence again in the aftermath of the global pandemic. “I came back to Columbia because I love it here,” said Lateefah. “It feels like home.” Originally from Cedar Rapids, IA, educational and professional opportunities have also previously taken her to California, where she worked as a part-time professor and an executive director at a nonprofit before beginning her work as a psychotherapist. When her clients began to request coaching, she then found a new call as a Transformational Life Coach with The Coaching Kiva. “A Kiva is ‘a large chamber, often wholly or partially underground, in a Pueblo Indian village, used for religious ceremonies and other purposes,’” Dr. Wielenga explains. “At The Coaching Kiva, we go deep and take the time to make the unconscious conscious. Setting children up for success during their formative years is one of the greatest challenges that parents face. If your children are faced with trying conditions that limit their physical, perceptual, and linguistic abilities, it can be even harder to find a good space, as well as the right human and material resources to help them thrive. It may take not only collaboration between your family and the professionals involved in your children's care, but also a roadmap tailored to their specific needs and laid out by skilled hands. If you're wondering what to do to make sure your children achieve balance in all areas of their lives, look no further. Let’s Meat Less expanded their Meatless Monday Columbia initiative to Benedict College in continuation of their mission to unite our community around this common good. It began with a spectacular tailgate-style launch party on Benedict’s campus on August 16, when students enjoyed free plantbased burgers, sausages, sides, and a performance by the Benedict marching band! Next in this partnership and with the help of Forward Food are the addition of plant-based soul food recipes and chef training for the BC dining hall!

Let’s Meat Less to do more good! If you want to be healthy, live longer, lessen your impact on the environment, and save some innocent animals, eat less animal meat and more delicious plant-based meals! You can start by participating in Columbia and Richland County’s own Meatless Monday! Non-profit Let's Meat Less is your official Meatless Monday ambassador and a resource for expert nutrition recommendations, recipes, and local restaurant information. Visit LetsMeatLess.com for more information, and follow along @letsmeatless.

As a University of South Carolina alumna, Let's Meat Less Founder Sue Doran, MS, RDN invites you to learn more about Gamecock Pantry, where she’s stocking the fridge with meat, milk, and eggs—all made from plants! Gamecock Pantry was created by UofSC students to provide food assistance for the Carolina community. Your contribution, whether volunteer work, food, or money, helps students in need.
