CREATIVE CULTURE the mission of the artist—whether a painter, sculptor, dancer,

musician, or poet—is to pull us out from the workaday world to experience life with a fresh perspective. Thankfully, Columbia’s vibrant arts scene continually engages us to live fully within our unique and wonderful city. Columbia’s creative culture can be found almost everywhere you look. Not just in galleries and museums, this creativity is found in our public and private spaces, our restaurants and shops, and even our street markets and festivals. It’s in our homes and our places of work. It’s in our food, our delightful Southern-isms, and our irresistible and irrepressible personalities. We all contribute to this city’s creative spirit—as creators and consumers, suppliers and supporters, artists and aficionados. In this city with such a strong sense of place, we especially thank our artists for their vital voices in telling Columbia’s story. Far more than just window dressing, the arts provide an essential foundation for the city’s identity, continually revealing, shaping, and celebrating the character of our community. On the pages of this issue, we pay tribute to Columbia’s spirit of creativity, grateful to those in all walks of life who inspire us with their artistic vision and infuse our every day with beauty and wonder.

ken may OF THE SC ARTS COMMISSION

Ken May is unassuming and friendly. You might not guess he was the executive director of the South Carolina Arts Commission, a state agency with the mission of building a thriving arts environment for the benefit of all South Carolinians. Harriet Green, director of visual arts at the Commission, knows her colleague has the experience and wisdom to lead: “Ken is a 360 degree arts person. He is a lover of music, dance, `, film, poetry, prose, and the visual arts, and speaks with great depth about many arts disciplines. He is patron, artist, and executive director of one of the most respected state arts agencies in the country.” Ken joined the Commission as a regional arts coordinator and director of special projects in 1985. Remembering his first big project, “Arts in Basic Curriculum,” Ken becomes visibly emotional. As the father of twins who were born a few years later,

he had no idea how much they would benefit from public arts education. Now adults, both his daughter and son have careers in the arts. “I thought my kids might rebel and become lawyers or accountants, but that didn’t happen,” jokes Ken. “So far, though, they’re making their way in the arts, hard as that can be sometimes.” Recently, Ken’s job at the Commission has required his involvement in the political process, which he has embraced. He’s been rewarded by meeting people all over the state who are organized and passionate about the arts. Though he might have learned to enjoy the adrenaline rush of politics, he’s still an arts lover at heart. “I’d still rather be in a gallery or at a concert than in the lobby of the State House.” Then he smiles and adds, “Though they do have some great art in there.”

EXPERIENCE

EXPECT CREATIVE CONFIDENCE COLUMBIA’S AGE THREE THROUGH GRADE 12 INDEPENDENT SCHOOL WHERE STUDENTS LEARN TO EXPECT MORE.

Drawing, painting, sculpture, pottery, dance, music, drama, and creative writing—at every level, your child encounters an array of arts at Heathwood Hall. He studies technique and history, works with award-winning faculty and visiting artists, participates in regional and national competitions, and takes in-depth studio classes and lessons in the medium he finds most compelling. From the first time your child sets pen to paper, lips to trumpet, foot on stage—to the time she paints a compelling landscape, performs a dance solo, delivers her lines with an inspired twist—she’s at work on the same, indelible skills. Among fellow artists and highly trained teachers, she gains discipline, rigor, and the confidence to approach a blank page or stage with utter fearlessness and trust herself enough to create.

JALI

ART FOR EVERYONE Columbia’s public art—including its memorials, monuments, installations, murals, and sculptures—beautifully enhances the vibrant character of our city. Creating strong and meaningful connections between people and place, this freely accessible art is for everyone. As it activates our imaginations and encourages us to pay attention in the course of daily life, the art we discover just around the corner helps us tap into our own creativity. Capturing both the eye and the mind, public art encourages a spirit of play and creative interaction with the landscape. Whether we reverently observe the artist’s work or jump right into the scene and mug for the camera, we’re inviting art to become a part of our personal and collective stories. From a giant fire hydrant that makes us chuckle to a historical monument that helps us pause and remember, public art deepens our city’s sense of identity and reinforces cultural bonds. We don’t always seek out public art, but often stumble upon it unexpectedly. It surprises and draws us in, whetting the appetite and prompting us to learn and discover more about our city’s creative spirit. Ideally, these discoveries then drive us to the doorways of our city’s cultural establishments, where the full array of Columbia’s creativity awaits.

Constructed and fabricated in Columbia, Jali is by Steven Naifeh, a South Carolina based artist. Boyd Plaza, Columbia Museum of Art 1515 Main Street

“ The Columbia Museum of Art not only brings one-of-a-kind art exhibitions to Columbia from around the country and world, but it also has the only art collection in the entire state that shows such a wide range of art, from antiquity to the present.”

michel moore

“I think the best part of creativity in Columbia is feeling like I am a part of a scene that’s moving forward. There’s so much more going on here than even five years ago; anyone can tell that there is much more to do and places to go: First Thursdays, Trustus, The Nick, alternative performance spaces… the list goes on.”

jay matheson

“If I had to sum up the arts in Columbia right now, I would say it is diverse and eclectic, and a great place to be as an artist. With the art walks on Main Street and in the Vista every month, there are more and more opportunities to exhibit work downtown. I look forward to watching the art scene grow and evolve with more collaboration between art forms.”

kirkland smith

“The speed at which the arts community has grown is of great wonderment. There was once a time when Columbia had just a handful of arts events to look forward to attending. Now, I find myself having to make tough decisions about what to attend. Columbia Rising!”

harriet green INTERMINGLING CONVERGENCE

One Eared Cow Glass, Tom Lockart & Mark Woodham The Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center 1101 Lincoln Street

“The work that Mark Plessinger is doing with First Thursdays is amazing for the city. He speaks the language of the artists. For visual artists and musicians who may not have a platform to display their work or be on stage, Mark not only does it consistently, he does it well.”

SPEAKING UP

COLUMBIA ON THE ARTS

“Columbia definitely has a higher than average concentration of creative and talented people living and working here. It’s their ideas that make this city such an inspiring place to live.”

lee snelgrove

“I look forward to the Indie Grits Festival at The Nick every spring. It may sound trite, but it’s one of those events where anyone can find something to enjoy. It encompasses what’s unique about our art scene in Columbia and makes me proud to call this place home.”

katie alice walker

“The City of Columbia has an unusually deep pool of talent, from visual art to performing art to music. The fun is in watching the city wake up to just how deep the pool is.”

mark plessinger

“In Columbia, when you say, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we…’ the response is most often, ‘Yes! Let’s do that! Let’s start tomorrow.’ We live among excited, interesting neighbors who look for new reasons to smile—whether that be a kickball game, a farmer’s market, a concert in the park, or a street festival. Our DIY attitude makes it happen.”

katie fox

“I have made a living as full time artist/ arts administrator in Columbia since 1997, potentially the only person in my grad school theatre program who is still employed in the arts, except for an old roommate Alton Brown… oh well! Columbi-yeah!”

fresh face:

pure barre

With roots in the Midlands and backgrounds in dance, childhood friends Addie Fairey and Anna Reynolds jumped at the chance to open a Pure Barre studio in Five Points. Thrilled to pursue a career they were passionate about, Pure Barre was a perfect fit both for them and this city. “Five Points is the heart of Columbia, SC, and we are grateful to be a part of this community of local businesses,” says Addie. “Our clients can start their morning with a class at Pure Barre, walk with friends to grab a cup of coffee afterwards, and then check out all of the great shops in the area.” As more and more Columbians seek healthy, active lifestyles, Addie and Anna recognized the opportunity to share this innovative exercise technique that produces fast results for all ages and body types. Described as “a total body workout that uses the ballet barre to perform small isometric movements set to great music,” Pure Barre helps create the long, lean muscles of a dancer. “If you can hold on to the barre, you can do it—no dance experience required! Plus, we offer a new client special for a month of unlimited classes, which is a fantastic way to give Pure Barre a try.” Thanks to its effectiveness and the fun and supportive environment, Pure Barre has already gained a loyal following in Columbia. “While there are more than 100 locations nationwide, Pure Barre feels like a small, tightknit community of women. We are so excited to include Columbia women of all ages in the Pure Barre lifestyle.” Visit purebarre.com, call 803.254.0078, or email columbia@purebarre.com or irmo@purebarre.com to learn more or register for classes. Ken Carey

Four years ago, with the goal of giving South Carolina schools and nonprofits a local alternative to big-box fundraisers, Columbia native Ken Carey created LocalHappiness.net. “I’d grown tired of helping my elementary-aged children sell out-of-state items and thought there had to be a way folks could support local businesses instead,” explains Ken. Pulling together Certified SC Product partners, artists, authors, and musicians, Local Happiness now offers more than 175 South Carolina items, including Grey

Ghost Cookies, State Street Snacks, Iron Brew Coffee, and even children’s music CDs by Columbia’s own Lunch Money. Most recently, Local Happiness has partnered with local artist Michael Krajewski on a series of frameable stationery, perfectly capturing the artist’s whimsical abstract style. With every dollar remaining in South Carolina and 40 percent of the purchase price supporting schools, churches, and nonprofit organizations, Local Happiness has discovered an innovative and creative way to give back to the community that beautifully supports our state’s economy.

VOICES

THE RESTORATION

exploring the culture of their native soil

“I was tired of playing power-chord-driven rock music with self-centered lyrics.”

For some bands, the balance between musical and aesthetic identity can be a difficult task. Columbia-based band The Restoration has avoided these obstacles and become one of the most unique and compelling musical acts in the city.

Understanding that there is an appeal and responsibility for music embedded with these deep Southern undertones, Daniel explains:

Describing themselves as writing “concept albums about the American South,” The Restoration encompasses a blend of bluegrass, Americana, and a twinge of history lesson with their releases. With music inspired by the works of Flannery O’Connor and William Faulkner, the group has developed a sound that is a time capsule for the South.

“The theme we try to spread across all of our work is that the South is a complicated place with a wide variety of ideas that often conflict. Many of these conflicts are cyclical with one generation failing to realize that they’re making the same mistakes as the generation before them. Our first two albums do focus on the dark side of human nature but this, to me, is a self-critical voice that I felt it was important to embody as a white male artist from South Carolina.”

Their 2010 debut album Constance is much more than just an album—rather, it’s a critically acclaimed concept piece on the American South, filtering traditional music through contemporary songwriting with the album’s lyrics functioning as historical fiction. The group’s mastermind and lead singer Daniel Machado offers these thoughts about the band:

With their distinctive and artful design, you’ve certainly spotted them around town. The Palmetto Tree bike racks that now grace numerous locations around the city are the work of local artisans and craftsmen Stewart Sneed and Greg Roberts through their two-man company Cycle Stops LLC. An accredited Master Welder who has worked in the metal industry for over 10 years, Stewart is passionate both about his work and the City of Columbia: “Columbia is my home, and it’s truly a beautiful city. I understand why people would want to experience it by bicycle,” says Stewart. “There is a huge draw to be able to run your errands, enjoy the ride, and reduce your carbon footprint in the process.” As Columbia business owners contract with Cycle Stops to install the racks outside their shops, they soon discover the racks not only draw in cycling customers,

they also add curb appeal that demonstrates a commitment to the environment. In addition to beautifying the city with their highly functional art, Stewart and Greg also create a wide array of other pieces—both utilitarian and artistic— through 803 Iron, their welding and fabrication shop specializing in ornamental ironworks and structural steel. “At 803 Iron, we custom build and repair everything from fencing, gates, and handrails to trailers, metal artwork, and furniture,” explains Stewart. “We’ve also started using upcycled wood from all over to build beautiful wooden furniture with metal bases.” “If you can dream it or break it, we can build or fix it—if it’s made of metal.”
