THIS CITY IS IN THE MIDST OF A G O L D E N A G E O F R E V I TA L I Z AT I O N . All over town, active construction areas and hardhat zones are pointing toward an exciting era of rebirth. Even more thrilling is that so much of this growth is happening on the foundations of the past. Rather than knocking down the old and starting over with the new, Columbia’s entrepreneurs and visionaries are finding fresh uses for buildings from days gone by —preserving not just the spaces but also the stories behind them. History is a foundational pillar of Fig. For this issue, we partnered with our friends at Historic Columbia who helped us step back in time. With the guidance of John M. Sherrer III, Historic Columbia’s Director of Cultural Resources, we carefully made our way into spaces like the abandoned second floor of the Seegers-Habenicht Building on Main Street. There we found a veritable time capsule of rooms closed off for more than 70 years, discovering a mishmash of antique furnishings, vintage boxing gloves and tennis rackets, as

well as piles of red, white, and blue patriotic bunting from the 4th of July. As you thumb through this issue, be on the lookout for glimpses of history in the making. You’ll find not only a careful and thoughtful review by Historic Columbia’s John Sherrer of our city’s revitalization efforts on pages 33-37, but you’ll also spot informative historical captions scattered throughout. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make history with this issue and who is helping to write the next chapters in our city’s story. CAROLINE, JANET & THE FIG INDUSTRIES TEAM

Fresh fun comes to Main Street A W E E K LO N G C E L E B R AT I O N capped by a free, family-friendly festival on Saturday, April 8, Love, Peace & Hip Hop brings upwards of 10,000 attendees to Columbia’s Main Street each year. Attendees enjoy the best and brightest live performers, DJs, B-Boy dance crews, hip-hop visual artists, and craft and fashion vendors. ‘80s hip-hop duo Kid N Play, this year’s headliner, will deliver an energetic stage show with their positive, messageoriented music for all ages. This iconic duo, once known for Kid’s hi-top fade haircut—which stood ten inches high at its peak—continues to deliver the fun with their trademark Kick Step, otherwise known as the Funky Charleston.

“Going into year five of the festival, we really wanted to focus on fun. Kid N Play personifies just that,” said Love, Peace & Hip-Hop founder FatRat da Czar. Another big focus for the festival this year is unity. As World Famous Hip-Hop Family Day continues to grow in size and scope, the planning committee for the festival boasts an inclusive array of local community representatives. “Similar to how we unite spectators on Hip-Hop Family Day,” explained Czar, “I wanted to unite the city’s protectors and promoters of the culture by moving towards a committee system.”

In addition, they’ve expanded their partnerships in education, art, economic development, and family stability—with a special focus on health care, as evidenced by their title sponsor, WellCare of South Carolina. Authentic: Dr. John Hammond Moore C E L E B R AT I N G D R . J O H N H A M M O N D M O O R E as an esteemed historian manages only to skim the surface of a life bursting at the seams with accomplishments. A distinguished journalist, veteran of the United States Navy, and renowned academic, this nonagenarian has dedicated his working life to studying and participating in history—exploring destinations as far and exotic as Australia and as close to home as USC’s Thomas Cooper Library. Dr. Moore first came to South Carolina in 1944 at age 19 when he trained in Charleston on a new Landing Ship Medium. A deployment in the South Pacific and three academic degrees later,

he returned to SC as a faculty member of Winthrop College in the 1960s. While there, he published Research Materials in South Carolina, a first-of-its-kind compilation of research treasures found in historical repositories statewide. In the years following, Dr. Moore found himself zipping across the world to Australia, where he accepted a teaching and research position. After returning to the US, he settled in Washington, DC as an editor for McGraw-Hill, until he relocated to Columbia in 1985 as a research associate for the Thomas Cooper Library. Dr. Moore immediately got to work on two new projects: The South Carolina Highway Department, 1917!–!1987 and South Carolina

Newspapers, published a year later. Dr. Moore is perhaps best known locally for his work Columbia and Richland County: A South Carolina Community, 1740!–!1990, published by USC Press. This historical guide to the Midlands undertakes the full scope of this region for the past two centuries in impressive detail. With a stunning reservoir of 25 books and numerous published articles, Dr. John Hammond Moore has long been known for his unmatched passion for history. His lifetime of works continue to serve as his honored legacy— a legacy that will remain for generations to come.

Making F IGU RAT I VE LY AND L I T E RAL LY, Columbia’s recent downtown revitalization rests, in no small way, upon the foundations of the past. Modernday entrepreneurs are making history as they find new uses for old buildings dotting the capital city’s Main Street and Congaree Vista districts. Their recipes for success involve a careful and deliberate blend of old and new into a cocktail of patina and modern panache that results in destinations brimming with vigor, full of substance, and offering a break from the ordinary—all hallmarks of a vital urban scene.

% The South Carolina Department of Mental Health’s former 178-acre Bull Street campus houses historically and architecturally important structures that illustrate the evolution of mental health treatment for more than 150 years.

" The facility’s former bakery, built in 1900, recently reopened following extensive rehabilitation and now is home to both SOCO, offering entrepreneurs a venue for independent and collaborative work, and The Iron Yard, offering intensive computer programming classes. GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.

Giving Back: Cheryl Holland and Doug Quackenbush M O T I VAT E D BY V I S I O N S of an ever-thriving Columbia, capital city couple Cheryl Holland and Doug Quackenbush have a well-earned reputation as a duo dedicated to the betterment of their community. In addition to their flourishing professional careers, Cheryl and Doug are both committed philanthropists, steadfast in their mission of giving back to the city of Columbia. Even with their full schedules as owners of Abacus Planning Group and Quackenbush Architects and Planners, Cheryl and Doug make it

a priority in their marriage to add meaningful philanthropic work to their busy calendars. Growing up with an abundance of generous role models as children—from Scout leaders to Sunday-school teachers—the couple sees their own giving-back projects as a way to come full circle. Cheryl and Doug are passionate about the arts, as well as several social justice issues, such as combatting homelessness, aiding those with mental illnesses, and protecting children in the community. As devotees of their faith, Cheryl and Doug are also active

members of Shandon Presbyterian, recently serving as chairs of the church’s Centennial Capital Campaign. Finally, as involved parents and strong proponents of quality education, the couple has sponsored numerous fundraisers at their daughter’s school, Rosewood Elementary, and funded a $100,000 financial planning scholarship at Clemson University—Doug’s alma mater. By making it a priority to find time amidst the demands of life to serve their community, this couple is helping to foster a vibrant and thriving place that benefits us all.

David, 15 lymphoma “I wish to go to an adventure resort”

Social Mission: Make-A-Wish South Carolina AT F I G , W E B E L I E V E in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions— one that creates connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. For 2017, we have chosen Make-A-Wish South Carolina, an impactful non-profit whose good works contributes immensely to our thriving, local community. When a child is sick, the narrative of their life story is forever changed. Make-A-Wish South Carolina grants wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses to enrich their lives with hope, strength, and joy. For kids like David, a fifteen-year-old boy diagnosed with lymphoma, life became a whirlwind of doctor’s appointments, hospital visits, and chemotherapy treatments. Yet,

54

when he was soaring high in the air while looking out at a beach on his wish to go to an adventure resort, the reality and weight of his illness was the last thing on his mind. With his spirits lifted and head held high after his wish experience, David knew it was okay to look forward. Wishes are more than just a nice thing. The impact of a wish can last a lifetime. In fact, medical professionals say wish experiences can improve children’s state of mind, make them more willing to comply with treatment requirements, and even influence their physical health. MORE ABOUT MAKE-A-WISH SOUTH CAROLINA Make-A-Wish South Carolina serves families in all forty-six counties of South Carolina. The Midlands region is defined by ten counties: Lexington,

Richland, Lee, Kershaw, Newberry, Fairfield, Sumter, Calhoun, Clarendon and Orangeburg. In the last fiscal year, 37 wishes were granted to Midlands kids. Funds raised in South Carolina stay in South Carolina to directly benefit local kids. Funding is the only thing stopping Make-A-Wish from granting the wish of every eligible child in our state. Support can be given through direct donations, corporate giving, sponsorships, online fundraisers, planned giving, or event participation.
