Making memories that transcend time During the busiest time of the year, I want you to take a moment to look up at the night sky. What do you see? I’m enamored that we all look at the same moon, Milky Way, and sun that Moses, Cleopatra, Leonardo Da Vinci, Johannes Gutenberg, George Washington, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Jesus, and all of our ancestors walked under. The theme of our issue—Wonder Written in the Stars—truly represents this time of year for us. The sun and moon both transcend time. This winter, I plan to celebrate with my family and friends the joy of the holidays. I can’t wait to gather around my grandmother’s table with my family for Christmas, to eat black eyed peas and collards on New Years, and dine with my husband on Valentine’s Day. I’m going to spend time being thankful for the people present around the table, and for those that have gone before us. We will make new memories and reminisce about the old ones that transcend time—just like the moon and stars. Within the pages of this book, you’ll find and learn about the businesses and people who know how to help you mark all of the special occasions and memories in your life. We have the distinct honor of working with event planners, venues, catering companies, photographers, boutiques, and more that will create the exceptional soirée that you’re planning for. Plus, they’ll help you document it so that you can remember it for a lifetime. These are businesses that are dedicated to their craft, to their clients, and embracing Columbia. Hire them, shop with them, and dine with them as you enjoy the holidays this year—they’re building their legacy and fulfilling their purposes. it’s an incredible thing to support small businesses, and we believe in each and every one that is included in this issue. Our wish for you this holiday season is that you take the time to experience all of the joy and merriment that comes with this time of year. As we celebrate our fifth year of loving all things local in Columbia, we hope to continue discovering new, wonderful local businesses, people, and experiences that we can all enjoy together in 2019. From our family to yours, we wish you happy holidays! For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne. University—the Palms, the Sorensens, and the Pastides. As you can imagine, she speaks of each of the families with fondness. “It’s bittersweet that the Pastides are retiring, but I’m so happy for them,” Pam said. “If you look up First Lady in the dictionary, Patricia Moore-Pastides’ name would be listed right beside it. She’s an amazing woman! She’s written three books, has helped start the Farmer’s Market on campus, and is highly involved in health and literacy, and the list goes on.”
Authentic: Pam Bowman W H E N W E LO O K F O R O U R F I G A U T H E N T I C , we look for someone that lives and breathes the theme that we’re in. Pamela Bowman, Director of Special Events at the University of South Carolina, is just that. She and her team directly manage or oversee 225-240 events per year! She plans a wide variety of events for the University—from arranging trips to the NCAA Final Four for donors and special guests, to prayer vigils for national events like the Orlando Night Club Shooting to some of her favorite, which are commencement and Cocky’s Reading Express. One of her favorite events to plan was five years ago, the Celebration Commemorating 50 Years of Desegregation. The event honored three

courageous African American students that enrolled as students in 1963, and the celebration included 18 events throughout the year and several exhibits. “Two of the three are still living, and it was a privelege to host and honor them,” Pam said. “Just incredibly meaningful.” The least favorite ones to plan? The memorials—with tears in her eyes, she spoke about how they’re the hardest ones and how she’s had to plan far too many of them. In addition to events, her office manages the President’s House, a historical home that was built in 1854 and totals 15,500 square feet. Her words drip with fondness not only for the presidents that have served the University, but for her team, her peers, the University, and the students. “It’s more than a job, we’re a family,” she said. Not only does Pam live and breathe events—she even sends daily texts of “eventspiration” to her peers and team—her blood also runs garnet and black. Pam has her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University and she jokes that after graduation, she never left. She was a graduate assistant and from there, she worked over to Special Events. She even married her husband at the University with the ceremony at the Rutledge Chapel and her reception at The Top Carolina. Pam is a proud mom to a 13 year old daughter and has been married to her husband for 20 years. In her spare time, she’s highly active at her church and with the Creighton Middle School PTO.

New Year, New Columbia With the beginning of a new year comes new resolutions. We think that one of yours this year should be to get out and explore all of the great new businesses that have come to Columbia recently or that will be comingin 2019. Try a flight of beer at a new craft brewery, rent a blue bike and explore the city, and get a taste of something different at one of several new restaurants.

Giving the gift of music this season
HERE ARE SOME OF 2018-19’S BEST MUSIC RELEASES TO SHARE:
Leon Bridges “Good Thing”
Phosphorescent “C’est La Vie”
Max Frost “Good Morning”
Jade Bird “Uh Huh”
Maggie Rogers “Heard it in a Past Life”
Fort Worth’s Leon Bridges has been compared to Sam Cooke and Otis Redding but brings a contemporary twist to R&B and Soul -tinged music. “Beyond” is our pick to start your exploration.
We’re not sure why Athens, Georgia’s Matthew Houck adopted the stage name Phosphorescent - thank you autocorrect! - but the minute we heard “New Birth in New England,” the radio friendly single become one of our favorites.
Single - Destined to be the soundtrack of numerous TV morning show promos, Good Morning had us moving making coffee in the break room and throwing our hands up in the air. Every morning would be a good morning accompanied by a gospel choir.
Single - London based folkie Jade Bird cranked up the attitude and guitars for her debut U.S. single. If you say you love her, say “Uh Huh.”
Music fans best remember Maggie Rogers from her 2016 single “Alaska” which blew Pharrell Williams away. Heard it in a Past Life is her first full length album. The first single “Light On” is impressive.
Local/South Carolina Picks: E.Z.Shakes “The Wolf”
Youth Model “Outside Threat”
Real Work “Real Work”
Barnwell “Lose Your Teeth”
Jeremy Shiloh “Long Dark Road”

S,
Senior Matters is proud to support Senior Resources, Inc. this holiday season. Senior Resources, a nonprofit organization, coordinates services, provides resources, and encourages personal choices that allow more than 4,000 Midlands senior citizens to be independent.
The season of giving happy holidays from the senior matters’ family to yours!
For most families, this time of year brings loved ones together to give thanks and to celebrate. However, there are those older adults who either have no family or no loved ones who embrace the holiday season, and they find this time of year to be difficult. Senior Matters is keeping them, and all families, in their thoughts and prayers this season. If changes are occurring in the lives of your older family members and you’re not sure where to turn, reach out to Senior Matters. They are here to offer you support.

Celebrations, big and small During a season of the year when everyone’s schedules tend to be full and hectic, we believe that there’s always time to take a moment to stop, gather, and celebrate the relationships in our lives. Go out with your significant other, celebrate with your friends, and invest quality time with your family.
Plan a date night
Gather with your family
Reserve a table for two at il Giorgione—dine on authentic Italian dishes under their twinkling outdoor lights Sip on wine at Lula Drake— grab a seat at the bar or a cozy table for two, and select a glass of wine to enjoy from their curated wine list Book a staycation at Hotel Trundle—reserve a night or two at Columbia’s boutique hotel, where you can easily walk to local restaurants, shops, and attractions on Main Street
Celebrate your friends Have a Girls’ Shopping Day on Devine Street—shop the boutiques of Devine Street with your best girl friends with local shops from Pink Sorbet to Copper Penny and Monkee’s.
Pick up meals from Happy Café—spend less time in the kitchen and more time with you family by picking up one of their organic, homemade casseroles for dinner See the lights around town— from Riverbanks Zoo’s Lights Before Christmas to Holiday Lights on the River at Saluda Shoals, you can make the night shine for your family.
Take a swing at Top Golf— visit The Venue on Main to grab dinner and drinks, and to try your hand at the new Top Golf Swing Suite.
