A NOTE FROM FIG
Hearts will be glowing I’m going to be honest with you—I love the changing of seasons, but I do not like the cold temperatures that come with the new season. Thank goodness with winter comes warming scents like cinnamon and evergreen; sounds of laughter, dancing, and clinking of champagne glasses; tastes of freshly steamed oysters and sweet potato cakes; sights of people falling in love and sharing love with each other; and the feeling that you want to bottle up this time of year so that you can savor it for years to come. They say that this is the most wonderful time of the year—and I agree, it truly is. The loving and joyful winter months brings lots of planning, parties, and proposals. This is our second issue at the helm, and I will say that it has been a complete honor to compile my dear friends and professionals in this magazine for you. If you’re planning a wedding, hosting a gathering, attending a party, or giving a gift, you should get in touch with and visit these outstanding businesses and people. They know how to do everything from hosting at their venue, arranging flowers, planning your event, creating your menu, dressing you, and more. Use these special people This book has been assembled with “elf” hands—working hard to plan, capture, edit, write, design, and make sure that we tell the story of each business in the way that they deserve. It’s a group of talented people that I’m incredibly grateful for. Join me and raise a glass and toast to a wonderful 2017, and an even better 2018. Sellers will find their customized marketing plans second-to-none in getting homes sold quickly and for top dollar. Make Kate your agent of choice in the Midlands.
Named one of RealTrends’ Best Agents in America Top TEN Realtors in South Carolina “ Kate Sweeten is the best in the business. She is very caring, attentive, persistent, precise, efficient and so much more! She knows the business inside and out and made our home buying and selling process a breeze. Kate and her team are very hard workers who get the job done right the first time. We closed on the selling of our house just a few days after Kate had her daughter and she was still calling to check in on me! She is crazy Amazing! I would choose her to sell or list time and time again. But sadly we will not be purchasing a home any time soon since Kate found us our DREAM HOME in the perfect location!”

AT FIG, we believe in the mission of central carolina community foundation. Please consider giving with your dollars and time this year.
Acts of giving ‘tis the season for giving
Giving brings joy all year round but especially during the holidays. This time of year is a wonderful time to begin instilling a “giving spirit” in your family that will last all year long. Each year, we offer recommendations of giving traditions to help you inspire generosity with your family and friends. We hope you will take time this season to enjoy a time honored family tradition or begin a new one.
expand your family: Expand your
family this holiday season. Palmetto Project’s Families Helping Families can assist you with finding a family in the Midlands to adopt. Pick out gifts for the family with your children, shop for their holiday meal fixings, or make special holiday treats to share.
set a daily act of kindness goal:
Set a goal with your family to accomplish one act of kindness each day during the month of December. Help family members, friends, or neighbors who are in need by offering to lend a hand, such as raking leaves, picking up trash or unpacking groceries. Invite each family member to share their act of kindness for the day at dinner each night.
stock the shelves: Help your kids and
neighbors collect non-perishable food for your local food bank, such as Harvest Hope. Or, volunteer to pack and deliver meals to senior citizens through Meals on Wheels with Senior Resources.
warm a heart: Collect coats, blankets,
mittens, and hats to give to the homeless. One local family collects these items at their annual Christmas party and gives them away in a local park on Christmas morning. Their kids now look forward to the yearly tradition even more than the presents they receive and the family now greets many of the people they give the coats to by name.
make giving a new year’s resolution: Use the holidays as a
starting point for a New Year’s resolution to make giving a part of your family all year long. Ask your children to collect their spare change and use it to fund a charitable project. One local family uses their spare change to make lunches for the homeless on Christmas Day. The children are responsible for putting together the lunches and the family delivers them early in the morninghours before they open their presents.
share your giving stories: Talking
about the experience of giving and receiving can inspire generosity among children. Share your family stories and history about how much you’ve been given and what that did for you. One question to start with is, “What is the greatest gift you’ve ever been given?” You can also record your stories through programs like Story Corps. The Community Foundation wishes you and your families a very happy season of giving.

However, there are those older adults who either have no family or no loved ones who embrace the holiday season, and they find this time of year to be difficult. Senior Matters is keeping them, and all families, in their thoughts and prayers this season. If changes are occurring in the lives of your older family members and you’re not sure where to turn, reach out to Senior Matters. They are here to offer you support.

Yule want to give back too!

Giving Back: Yule Jam Now in it’s third year, the annual Yule Jam at Music Farm is quickly becoming a favorite holiday tradition in Columbia each December. All born and raised right here in Columbia, friends Gabe Coggiola, Jason Morris, and Laine Ligon dreamed up the idea for Yule Jam back in 2015. They wanted to host an annual event each holiday season that would not only feature live music, but one that would benefit a good cause in the community.
They partner with up-and-coming local bands (this year, it’s LUTHI and Los Colognes) and with Music Farm Columbia to put together an evening of live music that raises money through ticket sales and a silent auction for Families Helping Families. “We’ve raised money through our generous donations from local sponsors, and with the help of Trae Judy at Music Farm,” Gabe said. “All of the money that we have raised through this event
has gone straight to Families Helping Families.” Families Helping Families, an initiative of Palmetto Project, provides gifts, clothing, food, and other essentials to Midlands families in need, ensuring that all of our neighbors in our community can share in the joy of the Christmas season. Can’t make the event this year? Visit fhfmidlands.org/donate/ to donate online.

Authentic: Juanita Johnson S T E P I N S I D E J U A N I TA ’ S D E S I G N , and be met at the door by the spunky, stylish, and sassy Juanita Johnson who is infamous around Columbia for her sewing and tailoring expertise. From bridal gowns to evening gowns, and everything in between, Juanita has been working with a needle and thread since she was 13 years old. “It’s a gift that I knew early on what I wanted to do,” Juanita said. “Some people live all of their lives without ever knowing. If you’re good at it, and you like it, that’s a gift.” Taught by her grandmother, Juanita has spent over six decades working with people in Columbia and helping them dress to look and feel their best. She’s a people person and is thankful to be able to work with so many people throughout our community. But most of all, she loves to work with brides on their wedding dresses. “My favorite part is just creating and tailoring the dresses,” Juanita said. “And when I finish, I love all of the hugs and kisses that I get as the girls walk out the door with their dress. I love working with people, and they’re not going to hug and kiss on you if they don’t like the dress you’ve made for them.” Juanita began her business in her home over 40 years ago, with customers stopping by the backdoor on Sunday afternoons, and has been operating out of a shop on Main Street in downtown Columbia for the last 30 years. But
when the building she worked out of on Main Street became too derelict to be a functional shop, she had to think about where to move next. It was a simple decision in the end. She moved less than two blocks away to the corner of Assembly and Washington. “People will come to me, people come from all over,” Juanita said. “This is my home, and I like it here. Columbia is growing and I don’t need to be anywhere else but here.”
Sewing and tailoring, often times for several generations of the same family, has been a part of Juanita’s life for over 60 years. If it’s up to her, it’ll be a part of her life for a while longer. “It’s not hard,” Juanita said. “It’s like breathing, it’s that easy. As long as I can breathe, see, and my hands work, I’ll be sewing.”

The excitement is beginning to build for the holiday season, and as the invitations come through for various events throughout the next few weeks, you begin to ponder what to wear to each event. Whether it’s your college friend’s black tie wedding, a New Year’s Eve gala, an evening out with friends, or your company's holiday party, we’ve gone to the experts for what you should wear this winter season and tips for how to style it.
From Black Tie Soirées and Weddings…
Our tips: • stand tall! Posture determines how well you’ll carry your outfit.
• This is an evening when you want to bring your best attire—wear your favorite fancy items that you don’t get to wear often.
• Keep the weather in mind—avoid wearing a

three-piece suit if it’s going to be a warm evening and conversely, if it’s going to be a cool evening, save the offshoulder dress for another event (or pair it with a shawl).
• If you’re going to a wedding, avoid wearing white
and if your host sets a dress code, make sure you follow it.

Social Mission: Make-A-Wish South Carolina AT F I G , W E B E L I E V E in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions— one that creates connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. For our 2017 Social Mission Partner, we’ve chosen Make-A-Wish South Carolina, an impactful non-profit whose good works contribute immensely to our thriving, local community.
Rob was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a baby. Growing up with this condition has created many challenges throughout his childhood that were often restricting. After receiving a wish to go deep sea fishing in honor of his grandfather, Rob didn’t want the experience to end there. His wish became the lifechanging catalyst to strengthen him on his journey to help make more wishes come true.
A wish granted to a kid with a critical illness is more than just a nice thing. Wishes provide renewed energy and strength in a child’s battle against their illness and powerful medicine in the form of hope. Wishes unite communities and deepen family bonds.
Recently Rob, despite having a critical illness that effects his ability to breathe, hiked 28.3 miles in one day in the Trailblaze Challenge because he wanted to wish it forward. The Trailblaze Challenge is an endurance program hosted by Make-A-Wish, allowing a

participant to hike 28.3 or 16.4 miles in one day on the Foothills Trail while raising funds and awareness for wish granting. Recruitment for the Spring 2018 hike takes place January 16-20 in the Midlands. RSVP for a recruitment meeting now to begin your journey. You can blaze a path for wishes!
