C R E AT I V I T Y I S T H E H E A RT B E AT O F any thriving community. We’re so fortunate to live in a place that has embodied that value for so long. From the visionary horticulture of Longwood Gardens, to the fine art masterpieces of N.C. Wyeth, Brandywine Valley has a longstanding tradition of offering art, culture, and creative expression across every genre and medium. In this issue, we explore the idea of creative spaces. Behind every piece of art, you’ll find an artist who carved out a space in which to create. A space for inspired ideas, for reflection, and—of course—for practice, practice, practice. Whether it’s the mirrored dance studio at Longwood Performing Arts, the bustling kitchen at Verbena BYOB, or the fiery hot workshop at Vinewoods Forge, art comes to life in these dynamic work (and play) spaces. And more and more, we love seeing art integrated into so many public nooks and crannies around town, serving both form and function. Downtown Kennett has become a creative space all its own. You’ll find mushroom shaped bike racks, colorful pop-up lending libraries, and a beer garden decorated with reimagined materials. Shops and businesses offer their spaces for Friday night gallery walks, often collaborating with local artists for special installations. Pots and lamp posts line

the streets of Historic Kennett and are lovingly landscaped each season, inviting us to linger. And maker collectives such as worKS offer shoppers a variety of one-of-a-kind artisan goods all under one roof. Looking for more experiential ways to engage with the arts this Fall? Don’t miss some of Kennett’s signature cultural events including The Annual Kennett Brewfest, Dia de los Muertos, Opening Night of the Kennett Symphony, and an all-new Fall exhibit at Longwood Gardens called Blooms & Bamboo. This season, we invite you to join us in celebrating the local art, artists, and creative spaces that make Kennett such an enchanting place to live and create. From our creative space to yours, BRIANNA CARLISLE, BECKY GALANTE, AND THE FIG INDUSTRIES TEAM

AUTHENTIC

Authentic: Heather Davulcu H E AT H E R D AV U LC U G R E W U P I N A L I T T L E T OW N in Texas, pencil in hand. She drew floor plans for favorite books, mapped out future businesses, and sketched dresses from old movies. Her mother encouraged her with stacks of paper and art classes. All of Heather’s experiences—from her degree in fashion design to a dream first job working for a theatrical costume company, working on a Disney film, starting a mural-painting business, and creating collections of illustrations—led her to a 100-day project drawing women of all shapes, sizes, races, and ages, from different walks of life. When she doubted her

abilities, a wise friend told her: “You can’t not get better if you do it every day.” Heather wanted every woman to see and celebrate her unique self. Her creative impulse has since propelled her to create new collections, coloring books, royal art, and Kennett-inspired designs. She loved illustrating the new Kennett Square map, for example, and she painted a Pop Up Lending Library station that brings the town’s rich history, from the Underground Railroad to recent immigration, to life. “I want to embrace all the gifts of diversity,” she says. Pier One, Michael’s, and Joann’s have featured Heather’s licensed designs,

and she currently has greeting cards at Trader Joe’s. Local customers can find her designs at WorKS, The Mushroom Cap, Mrs. Robinson’s Tea Shop, and Penny Lane Emporium. She’s relocating to a home studio so she can pursue new creative endeavors, including book illustration. “I have more ideas than there are hours in a day,” she says. To learn more or purchase any of Heather's artwork vist her website aprilheatherart.com and keep up with her work on Instagram at @aprilheatherart.

GIVING BACK

Giving Back: Kathleen Snyder & Casa Guanajuato “ T O K N OW YO U R R O O T S I S T O K N OW YO U R S E L F,” says Kathleen Snyder. She helped found Casa Guanajuato to share the traditions of all Hispanic cultures with younger generations and with the wider community. Their events center on the arts as connective tissue that bridges cultures and breaks down barriers. Casa Guanajuato’s Cinco de Mayo festival is one of the top ten in the country, and every year their spectacular Day of the Dead celebration integrates art, history, and the centuries-old tradition of honoring the dead. They’re also collaborating with the Philadelphia Union to hold a World Cup soccer tournament in September. A community picnic at Anson B. Nixon Park, this

school enrollment, or navigating other services. “When you’re living in an Anglo world, there’s always a little piece missing,” she says, “but it’s a wonderful feeling to be part of this community of caring, creative people in Kennett Square.”

She loves the natural integration of generations at these gatherings, where adults and children share conversations, affection, and respect. “Casa Guanajuato is a family,” she says. “We’re there for each other and we’re always celebrating something.”

Casa Guanajuato’s dream is to have their own “casa,” or home, here in Kennett Square where they can host a wide variety of classes and outreach programs and become even more deeply rooted in the community. They are a small but mighty team of only 15. Members include Vice President Sara Dickens Trillo, Secretary Gonzalo Cano, and Treasurer Jeanne Searer.

Casa Guanajuato collaborates closely with other nonprofits, including KACS, LCH, the YMCA, the Kennett Library, and Historic Kennett Square. And for Kathleen personally, she enjoys assisting anyone who needs help with translation,

F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to Kennett Square.

Fresh Face: Maura Grace Boutique “ FA S H I O N S H O U L D B E F U N , AND SHOPPING SHOULD BE E A S Y,” says Katie Holsten. And it’s clear from her warm smile and enthusiasm that the owner of the new Maura Grace Boutique is having lots of fun bringing accessible fashion to women of all ages. The welcoming, light-filled shop brims with color and trends. Like fashion itself, which is constantly evolving, there’s always something fresh to discover here. Maura Grace offers a broad range of contemporary women’s clothing and accessories, including the work of local artisans, all at accessible prices. “It’s an eclectic, one-stop shop,” Katie says. “You can find a birthday or hostess gift, a great card, and your outfit!”

After studying fashion merchandising at the University of Delaware, Katie worked at South Moon Under for ten years as a retail buyer. Once she started her family, she knew the time had come to pursue her dream of opening a boutique. Everything lined up over the past year, she says, and the location was the biggest piece to fall into place. Katie grew up in Hockessin and has watched Kennett Square evolve into a shopping and dining destination. “Kennett Square is amazing and I’m thrilled to be here,” she says. She’s showing her Kennett Square pride with a range of locally-branded items, including glasses and other gifts. “I love how fashion allows you to express yourself,” Katie says, and she’s passionate about helping women to do that. “These

are pieces you can put your own take on and interpret in different ways.” Maura Grace offers gift cards and, even better, Katie and her staff are happy to assist customers with finding that perfect gift for a family member, friend, or anyone on your list. “We're always here to help put an outfit together, assist with finishing touches, or be a source of inspiration,” she says with a smile. How did the name Maura Grace come about? Katie’s middle name is Maura, and her five-year-old daughter’s name is Grace. “She inspires me,” Katie says of her daughter. “She’s a little shopper, like her mom, and it’s exciting to show her that her mom is pursuing one of her dreams.”

We know it takes food to build a community W E A L L H AV E G O T T O E AT. Does a community require art and culture? I propose—yes it does. If we do not have these things we have too little to commune over. Sure, we could face the events and challenges of daily life on our own. But to build community we need to remind, uplift, and shake up; look to the past and look to the future. Together, art and culture give us a collective pastime. While we can garden or power walk on our own, culture and art bring us peacefully together to share some collective meaning and purpose. None of it could be done without the creation of a formidable space. Take N.C. Wyeth's studio, for example, with all of its airy height. Would a different space conjure different art?

Owner, Aimee Olexy

Talula's Table is a space. It is a very intentional space. It is anchored in communal seating and we have watched it bring out the best in a community for over a decade. Talula's Table is a space for discovery. Seek out great food and build a community. Art and Culture will surely appear. To great things,

LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND BUILDERS

Bring it home

When designing an outdoor living space, creating an integrated experience for the homeowner is GreenRoots Landscaping’s primary concern. Consider this outdoor space: GreenRoots Landscaping designed each element to play a part in the overall look and feel. Take it from one of their designers: “All the details of the privacy screening are delicately enhanced by the subtle tones in the flagstone and soft wisps of the perennials. We positioned the bubbling urn to be central so it can be heard through the screen door on a summer day or enjoyed from the adjacent seating area.” In short, GreenRoots knows that when it comes to your home, every detail counts. Let them help you design a seamless and comfortable outdoor experience for your own backyard. See their full services listing online or call for a free consultation.

EXPANSION: Hybrid ORs and the future of medicine LET’S TALK ABOUT CARS FOR A SECOND. A traditional car runs on just a gasoline engine. A hybrid car, on the other hand, has that plus an electric motor. Both cars will eventually get you to the same location, but the mechanical process of getting there and the quality of the ride might be a little different. A hybrid operating room works similarly. In a traditional operating room (OR), a surgical team uses typical surgical equipment to perform a procedure. In a hybrid OR, it’s not just the surgical team and equipment—there are multiple types of specialists and many different types of equipment. For example, if a patient is having heart surgery, it might not be just the cardiac surgeon and surgical nurses in the surgical theatre—there may also be cardiac interventionists and vascular surgeons. A patient can be treated in either a traditional or hybrid OR. But just like the traditional or hybrid car, the surgical process and the patient experience might have some differences. In 2020, Chester County Hospital will be opening a new hybrid OR for heart procedures. If your heart surgery is performed in the hybrid OR, here’s how your surgery might be different then it would be now: IMAGING TESTS DURING PROCEDURES WILL BE QUICKER AND BETTER. Having imaging tests, such as X-rays or ultrasounds, is a normal

50

part of preparing for surgery. Sometimes, a surgeon will need additional images in the middle of a procedure—and in a traditional OR, those images can throw a detour into the surgery. In a regular OR, the surgeon will need to use portable equipment that’s brought in from another room. Taking time to bring in the equipment and set it up adds time to the procedure. The longer your procedure, the more time you spend under anesthesia—the medicine that makes you fall asleep so you don’t feel pain or remember the procedure. Anesthesia is generally safe, but it does come with risks of complications, such as breathing or heart problems. These risks increase the longer you’re under anesthesia. Also, longer durations of anesthesia have been associated with increased time spent in the hospital after surgery or having to return to the OR for another procedure. The hybrid OR has imaging equipment right there, which can mean fewer delays, and less time under anesthesia. The hybrid OR also lends itself to minimally invasive procedures, which usually means a shorter recovery time and less time spent in the hospital. “Patients are able to get back to work and their daily activities much sooner. It allows you to quickly go back to your regular life,” says Michael Barber, Senior VicePresident, Chief Operating Officer, Chester County Hospital.

701 EAST MARSHALL STREET, WEST CHESTER 610.431.5000

YOU WILL BE MORE LIKELY TO HAVE MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY INSTEAD OF OPEN SURGERY. In a minimally invasive procedure, the surgeon will make a few small cuts, rather than large incisions. “With the hybrid OR, we will be able to accommodate even more patients who need minimally invasive procedures than we already do,” continues Barber. YOUR SURGEON WILL HAVE MORE FLEXIBILITY. Sometimes, surgeries don’t always go quite as planned. During a minimally invasive procedure, it’s possible that the surgeon will realize that they need to perform a more invasive surgery. Or, they may be using one mode of surgery, and decide that they need to switch to a different one. In a traditional OR, this could prove complicated. The surgical team could potentially need to switch you to a different operating room. However, the hybrid OR is equipped to easily turn from a minimally invasive to a more invasive operative setting, and from one mode of surgery to another. Your surgeon will be able to update their method right then and there, which is better for the patient. “The hybrid OR gives you the best of both worlds—you get high-quality imaging, while also getting the space and visibility

CHESTERCOUNT YHOSPITAL.ORG/EXPANSION

of a typical OR,” confirms Mary Kehner, BSN, MS, RN, CNOR, Director, Surgical Services at Chester County Hospital. THE SURGERY WILL BE MORE PRECISE—AND MAYBE MORE SUCCESSFUL. One of the more challenging parts of surgery is making sure that patients are in the right position. The hybrid OR comes with a table that can be tilted and inclined to many different positions, allowing the surgeon to maneuver patients into the best position for a specific procedure. The table is connected to imaging equipment. This equipment recognizes and follows the table position—without the surgical team having to do a thing— and captures images of the surgical area from almost any angle. This is extremely important. Getting a patient to the perfect position and allowing the surgeon to come in at the right angle, as well as having pictures from all different angles, makes it easier for them to be more precise. And the better the precision, the lower the risk of complications, and greater the likelihood that the surgery will be successful.

THE OPERATING ROOM WILL BE EVEN SAFER THAN IT ALREADY IS. When you need surgery, you might be worried about your safety. And that’s perfectly normal. In any type of operating room, safety is the top priority—rest assured that no matter which room you’re in, the surgical team is looking out for your safety at all times. ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY ONLY GOES SO FAR — AND THAT’S WHY CCH IS HERE. When CCH's hybrid OR opens in 2020, they will have some of the most modern, advanced equipment in the region. But it’s not just the technology that makes their hybrid OR special. “In every operating room at Chester County Hospital, the surgical team works together seamlessly,” states Barber. “Everyone on the team—surgeons, nurses, technicians—has extensive training and experience, and works together to deliver the best care. And we can’t wait to bring those same levels of passion, expertise, and teamwork to the new hybrid ORs.”

WHILE TRADITIONAL ORS ARE VERY SAFE,

THE HYBRID OR CAN INCREASE SAFETY EVEN MORE: The imaging equipment will only use VERY LOW DOSES OF RADIATION.

The table can hold UP TO 550 POUNDS OF PATIENT WEIGHT, which means

that obese patients will rarely be unable to have surgery due to their size.

Patients in hybrid ORs may SPEND LESS TIME UNDER ANESTHESIA than patients in regular ORs, which lowers the risk of anesthesia-related complications.

I F A PATIENT DOES NEED TO BE OPENED UP UNEXPECTEDLY, THE HYBRID OR IS EQUIPPED TO HANDLE IT, and the staff

is well-trained in going from a minimally invasive to an open procedure.

The Barron’s Winner’s Circle Top 100 and the Barron’s Winner’s Circle Top 1200 are select groups of individuals who are screened on a number of different criteria. Among factors the survey takes into consideration are the overall size and success of practices, the quality of service provided to clients, adherence to high standards of industry regulatory compliance, and leadership in “best practices” of wealth management. Portfolio performance is not a factor. Please see www.barrons.com for more information. The Forbes ranking of America’s Top Wealth advisors, is based on an algorithm of qualitative and quantitative data, rating thousands of wealth advisors with a minimum of seven years of experience and weighing factors like revenue trends, assets under management, compliance records, industry experience and best practices learned through telephone and in-person interviews. There is no fee in exchange for rankings.
