AS ANOTHER YEAR BEGINS TO W I N D D OW N , we can’t help but be reflective and grateful for all that 2019 has brought. There are new businesses finding their special place in our town. New neighbors who have moved in, and new babies born. Our community’s landscape has changed and will continue to change. Kennett Square is not just a place on the map, but a community of people. And at Fig, we consider it a gift to work alongside so many of those people who are actively making our community a better place. Whether it’s the small business owner wearing a dozen different hats each day to pursue their dreams, or the volunteer at a nonprofit who puts in hours on the weekends to ensure needs are met—we get to witness it first hand. We get to curate this collection of pages each and every season, not only to share with you the people, the goods, and the services we think you should know about, but also to archive a moment in time—this is who we are, today. This is our town right now. At Fig Industries, our core value is Heart of Service. It shows up in all we do—informing the work we create and the choices we make. Authentic: Jie Deng, In The Eye Photography PHOTOGRAPHER JIE DENG smiles as she describes the green wall in Sycamore Alley as her studio. “It’s a perfect background for different kinds of photos,” she says. She loves its light, shadows, and symbolism—a narrow space that leads somewhere else. Jie (pronounced jā) emigrated from China to join her husband in New York in 2006. When they moved to Kennett Square in 2009 with their baby daughter, one of her first stops was the Kennett Library. “The library made my life better,” Jie says. In addition to finding books and storytimes for her daughter Phinya, Jie took ESL classes and made friends.
Longing for a creative outlet, she enrolled in an online photography class—and took many pictures of her daughter. Inspired by Brandon Stanton’s “Humans of New York” project, Jie conceived a series of storytelling portraits she calls “The People of Kennett Square.” She began photographing friends, and each fascinating person led her to others. With careful research and an artist’s sensibility, she captures the complex beauty of each individual. Her website features photos and a Q&A with each person (intheeyephotography.com/ stories-2/). “This project changed my life,” she says. “I got to know so many
people and the town.” She loves the people, sense of community, and international flavor of Kennett Square, a “small town with a big city vibe.” Jie has a new series on female artists and is learning the old-school art of analogue photography with a vintage camera. “I’m more thoughtful and present—I slow down with film. I love its color and texture.” Ten-year-old Phinya’s photo of her mother in Sycamore Alley brings Jie’s artistic journey, to the place she considers her second home, full circle. Breaking ground in more ways than one K E N N E T T I S K N OW N F O R I T S V O L U N T E E R I S M and generous
community support. But there are so many worthy causes, it can be hard to know where to start. And nonprofits often struggle in silos without access to a larger pool of resources. Longwood Rotary recognized these challenges and decided to study the big picture so they could connect people and resources. “We’ve always helped groups that bumped into us—but we weren’t aware of all the 42

needs in the community as a whole,” says President Bob Curran. Last year, they embarked on a year-long community needs assessment resulting in a focus 0n the following areas: E D U CAT I O N , H O U S I N G , A N D T R A N S P O R TAT I O N . Rotarians came alongside local nonprofits, attended meetings, and listened to needs.
“We’re a service organization, and we want to move into being a solutions organization,” Bob says. He asks organizations, “Tell me what your stop LO N G WO O D R O TA RY.C O M
sign is.” In education, for example, many children enter kindergarten with an achievement gap that, studies show, is nearly impossible to close. The Maternal & Child Health Consortium of Chester County knew that equipping parents to be their child’s first teachers would help eliminate this gap, but only a handful of parents were attending their classes. When Longwood Rotary found out these parents had no transportation and no babysitters, they mobilized members and resources to hire buses and provide
dinner and childcare onsite, enabling 87 parents and 94 kids to attend. Rotarians then matched funds with the district to provide these services for the whole year. They are working on similar initiatives in housing and transportation. “A L L O F T H E S E P R O J E C T S W I L L H AV E M U C H G R E AT E R I M PAC T I F W E W O R K T O G E T H E R ,” says Longwood Rotary Director for Development Jackie Crego, “so we are inviting other local Rotary groups and organizations to join us in this One Service Initiative. J E S I CA V I L L AG O M E Z “IT’S AMAZING TO SEE THE D I F F E R E N C E Wings for Success makes in our community,” says Jesica Villagomez, a volunteer stylist at Wings for Success. Jesica loves making a difference and helping others to succeed—whether she’s at work, volunteering with the Genesis Employee Engagement committee, or interacting with clients at Wings. “Wings for Success is an amazing organization that makes a difference in women’s lives through apparel, advice, and advocacy,” Jesica says. “We want to empower women and assist them with tools they need to pursue employment opportunities and economic security.”

At no cost to the women coming to Wings, they may attend workshops, request a one-on-one advice session, or make an appointment for a personal styling appointment. A personal stylist, like Jesica, provides clothing to each woman whether she is going for interviews, recently became employed, or needs clothing for her current job. Clothing needs are met according to her field of employment. Jesica heard about Wings’ mission from program manager Kelly Lynch, and she’s been styling clients ever since—including those who feel more comfortable speaking in Spanish or only speak Spanish. “Wings has flexible schedules and is always looking for Spanish-speaking volunteers,” she says.

Although she now lives in Nottingham, Jesica is a Kennett Square native and still spends most of her time here. “Kennett Square holds a special place in my heart and I love to stay connected with the community,” she says. When she’s not volunteering, she enjoys Zumba and spending time with family and friends. They offer basic family dentistry (cleanings, fillings, and extractions), as well as whitening and custom night guards. Across the country, about 20-25% of children experience dental disease. Here in southern Chester County, LCH sees about 60% of children with dental disease. Dental disease in children is incredibly preventable, and the LCH Dental Team is partnering with pediatric and prenatal medical providers, along with community partners to help end dental disease among our children.

A G I V I N G C O M M U N I T Y. As Janie Martin was folding laundry at the CURE Kenya Hospital in Kijabe, Kenya in October 2018, she was inspired to replace the threadbare hospital gowns.
colored pajamas. In September the pajamas were lovingly folded and placed in suitcases, which were hand-carried to Kijabe by members of the Garden Spot Village Travel with Purpose team.
When she returned home, she shared her vision with others at Garden Spot Village. Before she knew it, the Mountain View Vision & Design Team had taken on the challenge of helping her to sew 96 sets of pajamas for children in Kenya.
When the suitcases were opened in the CURE Kenya Hospital in early October, the pajamas were welcomed with smiles, laughter, and delight.
