AS ANOTHER YEAR BEGINS TO W I N D D OW N , we can’t help but be reflective and grateful for all that 2019 has brought. There are new businesses finding their special place in our town. New neighbors who have moved in, and new babies born. Our community’s landscape has changed and will continue to change. Kennett Square is not just a place on the map, but a community of people. And at Fig, we consider it a gift to work alongside so many of those people who are actively making our community a better place. Whether it’s the small business owner wearing a dozen different hats each day to pursue their dreams, or the volunteer at a nonprofit who puts in hours on the weekends to ensure needs are met—we get to witness it first hand. We get to curate this collection of pages each and every season, not only to share with you the people, the goods, and the services we think you should know about, but also to archive a moment in time—this is who we are, today. This is our town right now. At Fig Industries, our core value is Heart of Service. It shows up in all we do—informing the work we create and the choices we make. For six years, we’ve made it a priority to find ways to not only be cheerleaders for Kennett, but to lift

up nonprofit organizations through our design work as well as our Fig Social Mission program. This season, we invite you to shop small and give big. As you get to know the faces and spaces that make up our town, consider doing your holiday shopping here in Kennett Square. We hope you enjoy this issue dedicated to local giving and gifting. You can join us in this movement to shop small by posting a photo of your shopping trip and tagging us on instagram at @figkennett. Use the hashtag #shopksq, created by our friends and Historic Kennett Square, and we may feature you on our Fig Instagram feed! Happy Holidays! Photograph by Phinya Li

Authentic: Jie Deng, In The Eye Photography PHOTOGRAPHER JIE DENG smiles as she describes the green wall in Sycamore Alley as her studio. “It’s a perfect background for different kinds of photos,” she says. She loves its light, shadows, and symbolism—a narrow space that leads somewhere else. Jie (pronounced jā) emigrated from China to join her husband in New York in 2006. When they moved to Kennett Square in 2009 with their baby daughter, one of her first stops was the Kennett Library. “The library made my life better,” Jie says. In addition to finding books and storytimes for her daughter Phinya, Jie took ESL classes and made friends.

Longing for a creative outlet, she enrolled in an online photography class—and took many pictures of her daughter. Inspired by Brandon Stanton’s “Humans of New York” project, Jie conceived a series of storytelling portraits she calls “The People of Kennett Square.” She began photographing friends, and each fascinating person led her to others. With careful research and an artist’s sensibility, she captures the complex beauty of each individual. Her website features photos and a Q&A with each person (intheeyephotography.com/ stories-2/). “This project changed my life,” she says. “I got to know so many

people and the town.” She loves the people, sense of community, and international flavor of Kennett Square, a “small town with a big city vibe.” Jie has a new series on female artists and is learning the old-school art of analogue photography with a vintage camera. “I’m more thoughtful and present—I slow down with film. I love its color and texture.” Ten-year-old Phinya’s photo of her mother in Sycamore Alley brings Jie’s artistic journey, to the place she considers her second home, full circle. To see more of Jie’s work, visit her website at intheeyephotography.com.

Shop Local Put your money where your heart is

SHOPPING SMALL IS A BIG DEAL. Every time we savor a handcrafted coffee from a locally owned café, find a great outfit or accessory at a neighborhood boutique, enjoy strawberries in season from the farmers market, or choose the perfect handmade card to send to a friend, we’re making a choice that has a large and lasting impact—for us as consumers, for the local economy and community, for our friends and neighbors who are local business owners and artisans, and even for the environment. Turn the page to learn more about how small businesses are strengthening our local economy. >

21

OF THE MANY GREAT REASONS TO SHOP LOCAL, perhaps the best is that it’s more fun. At local shops we meet talented artisans and entrepreneurs. We can enjoy touching, seeing, trying on, and tasting a greater selection of unique, quality products. Local business owners are passionate about selecting products that are often locally produced, one-of-akind, and from for-good companies. And local shops provide the kind of exceptional customer service and expertise—and friendly smiles—that aren’t part of shopping at a national chain or online. Shopping small has a ripple effect, too. When we support local businesses we become part of an ecosystem that helps the local economy to thrive. Small local businesses are the largest employers nationally, and an amazing 91 percent of local business owners contribute to their communities by volunteering and making donations to nonprofits. Small businesses also tend to support other small businesses. They bring innovation and create more prosperous, entrepreneurial, and connected communities. Supporting these local businesses helps preserve Kennett Square’s historic and vibrant character and pride of place. Without them, towns like ours would fade into homogeneity. Shopping locally is also an eco-friendly choice. Kennett’s walkability not only contributes to a better quality of life but also decreases the kind of pollution and habitat loss associated with the sprawl of outof-town shopping complexes. Buying from small businesses, especially those that source local products, reduces the environmental impact of the processing, packaging, and transportation of goods. Kennett Square boasts a diverse array of over 30 restaurants and entertainment venues and nearly 30 retail shops. Each and every one of these small businesses is the fulfillment of a dream and provides a living for the owners, their employees, and their families. They depend on customer support that extends far beyond Small Business Saturday. Shopping small is smart, relational, and a vote for community, diversity, and independence. Before we click online or drive to the mall, let’s give our local shops a chance to delight us.

22

Buying local keeps money in your community and builds a strong local economy. Beyond the transaction itself,

supporting a local business greatly enhances your overall shopping experience. It deepens your connection to your local community.

community support. But there are so many worthy causes, it can be hard to know where to start. And nonprofits often struggle in silos without access to a larger pool of resources. Longwood Rotary recognized these challenges and decided to study the big picture so they could connect people and resources. “We’ve always helped groups that bumped into us—but we weren’t aware of all the 42

needs in the community as a whole,” says President Bob Curran. Last year, they embarked on a year-long community needs assessment resulting in a focus 0n the following areas: E D U CAT I O N , H O U S I N G , A N D T R A N S P O R TAT I O N . Rotarians came alongside local nonprofits, attended meetings, and listened to needs.

“We’re a service organization, and we want to move into being a solutions organization,” Bob says. He asks organizations, “Tell me what your stop LO N G WO O D R O TA RY.C O M

sign is.” In education, for example, many children enter kindergarten with an achievement gap that, studies show, is nearly impossible to close. The Maternal & Child Health Consortium of Chester County knew that equipping parents to be their child’s first teachers would help eliminate this gap, but only a handful of parents were attending their classes. When Longwood Rotary found out these parents had no transportation and no babysitters, they mobilized members and resources to hire buses and provide

dinner and childcare onsite, enabling 87 parents and 94 kids to attend. Rotarians then matched funds with the district to provide these services for the whole year. They are working on similar initiatives in housing and transportation. “A L L O F T H E S E P R O J E C T S W I L L H AV E M U C H G R E AT E R I M PAC T I F W E W O R K T O G E T H E R ,” says Longwood Rotary Director for Development Jackie Crego, “so we are inviting other local Rotary groups and organizations to join us in this One Service Initiative. The needs are great, and our message to everyone in our community is: N O W I S YO U R T I M E T O B E I N V O LV E D .”

“ T H I S I S N O T YO U R FAT H E R ’ S R O TA R Y,” Jackie says with a smile.

“We’re a dynamic, collaborative group of men and women of all ages, from different backgrounds. We can help you learn about the needs in our community and get connected with an area of service that will optimize your skills, time, and impact. And you don’t have to be a member to join us.” “We’re the one-stop-shop to direct people to areas of service that interest them,” says Bob. “We encourage Fig readers to go to longwoodrotary.com to learn more about how you can get involved and help make a difference in our community.”

GIVING BACK

Giving Back:

J E S I CA V I L L AG O M E Z “IT’S AMAZING TO SEE THE D I F F E R E N C E Wings for Success makes in our community,” says Jesica Villagomez, a volunteer stylist at Wings for Success. Jesica loves making a difference and helping others to succeed—whether she’s at work, volunteering with the Genesis Employee Engagement committee, or interacting with clients at Wings. “Wings for Success is an amazing organization that makes a difference in women’s lives through apparel, advice, and advocacy,” Jesica says. “We want to empower women and assist them with tools they need to pursue employment opportunities and economic security.”

46

At no cost to the women coming to Wings, they may attend workshops, request a one-on-one advice session, or make an appointment for a personal styling appointment. A personal stylist, like Jesica, provides clothing to each woman whether she is going for interviews, recently became employed, or needs clothing for her current job. Clothing needs are met according to her field of employment. Jesica heard about Wings’ mission from program manager Kelly Lynch, and she’s been styling clients ever since—including those who feel more comfortable speaking in Spanish or only speak Spanish. “Wings has flexible schedules and is always looking for Spanish-speaking volunteers,” she says.

LEARN MORE ABOUT FIG GIVING BACK AT FIGKENNETT.COM

Although she now lives in Nottingham, Jesica is a Kennett Square native and still spends most of her time here. “Kennett Square holds a special place in my heart and I love to stay connected with the community,” she says. When she’s not volunteering, she enjoys Zumba and spending time with family and friends. The Wings for Success website shares testimonials of joyful transformation and restored self-esteem. “The women we serve are always grateful,” Jesica says, “and it’s so rewarding to hear how they’re going to use the tools and materials they receive.” Find out how you can help or get involved at wingsforsuccess.org.
