SPRING IS STARTING TO BLOOM. Our sidewalks are buzzing with budding trees and happy feet that are energized and inspired by this historic city. Beautiful brides are making the final arrangements for their big day. The ground is thawing and making way for the veggies that power our deep-rooted agriculture. I think it’s safe to say that we are in awe of everything that Lancaster has to offer and in love with all of its possibilities. The deep roots of Lancaster hold, among many other things, a generous number of differencemakers who saw the beauty of Lancaster, led the way to help make it what it is today, and are continuing to work towards an even brighter future for tomorrow. You’ll find letters from several of them in this issue. They are love letters that celebrate how far this city has come and bring to light some of the opportunities we have to make it even better. Also in this issue, we can find an array of small businesses that help us to live well as they guide us through a healthier lifestyle for ourselves and our planet; from nutrition & exercise to alternative mindfulness and harmonic living spaces—it’s a whole lifestyle that encourages you to Love Yourself. Love Your Place. Love Your Planet.
Throughout this issue, you will find corner flags that give you ways to do just that—locally.
2020 for me is a year of gratitude. It’s about being thankful for this amazing place I get to call home and have had the honor to positively represent for the past 14 years. This year, I’m dedicated to prioritizing simple gestures like a hand written note of thanks or a small unexpected gift that cuts through the everyday noise and means so much. I hope you join me in seeing the beauty that is all around us and saying thanks to those who impact our lives. Love Lancaster It’s no mystery that we love the City of Lancaster. Since 2005 Fig has been on a mission to tell the stories of the small businesses and impactful organizations who define this exceptional place we call home. We love being a positive voice—shining a light on the people who want to make the world a better place and care so much about those around them. In this issue, we have the honor of hearing from just a few of the changemakers who have been a part of the
transformation of Lancaster over the past decade— what inspires them to keep moving forward and what hopes they have for the future of our city. It’s a love letter of sorts. We encourage you to find your passion, put it to good use, and get involved. And if someone on the following pages inspires you, drop them a note and tell them how much you appreciate all they do. It’s our shared love for this city we call home that binds us together and we truly believe that together we can do anything.

I am a lifelong resident of the City of Lancaster.
I cannot think of another place that I would rather live. Our City is full of opportunity and life. A community that cares and is willing to work hard and work together to make an impact. A City that brings people together and welcomes others into its mix. We have four distinct seasons to enjoy and abundant trees along the streets to mark the passing of those seasons. Lancaster has diverse cultures and lifestyles that help us to see and appreciate all of the differences of our humanity. This is a City that allows each one of us to make a difference. That difference can be on the block where we live, the business where we work, or the organizations to which we belong. I host our annual neighborhood block party, and I volunteer with SoWe to help strengthen a wonderful historic community. I also work with the Lancaster City Alliance to promote the growth and development of our City, and I help ASSETS strive to make all of these efforts available to everybody. My hope for the future is that Lancaster will continue to thrive, and more people will be able to participate and benefit from our improvements and growth.

Mayor Danene Sorace Mayor, Lancaster City
Whether you have lived on the same Lancaster City street for your entire life, or are a newcomer to Lancaster, you get that Lancaster is a special place. It is small enough to build community quickly and big enough that every day you can meet someone new. It’s the people that make Lancaster special. I ran for Mayor in 2017 in part to demonstrate that we could do politics differently. We could have real discourse without demeaning one another. We could solve problems and improve the lives of our residents. We could be responsible stewards of our children’s futures. I believe we are doing these things—working together as a team to ensure that our local government is operating with integrity and respect to deliver quality services that our community relies on every day. In 2020, we continue our work building a stronger and more equitable Lancaster block by block, by focusing on Strong Neighborhoods, Safe Streets, Secure Incomes, and Sound Government. A few highlights: we are launching a $11.1 million investment to eliminate lead poisoning in our city, which will focus on properties located south of King Street. We are using data to inform our decisions like never before. And we are working diligently to advocate for equitable, sustainable funding to keep our city thriving for decades to come. Gratitude for everything—even the hard stuff.
I live in Lancaster City which makes my affections personal: these are the streets and parks my daughters play on, the collaborative initiatives my wife and I get to till the gardens of our ideas, and the organizations that have nurtured our spirits and understanding of community. Often people talk about the architecture as making Lancaster unique, but I’m more interested in the assemblage of people, all of the people, even those our systems and opportunities too often forget to include. Lancaster has always been a diverse place, but too often pressures and barriers have led to disenfranchisement. Right now, those issues are around housing, poverty, and gentrification, challenging our ideas of who gets to make up our City. I believe, though, that where our goodwill meets our intentionality, we can take bold risks to change the systems and narrative possibilities for everyone’s future. If daring enough, Lancaster can respond proactively to early indicators and find successful pathways to solutions instead of responding to established crises. Communities near and far will emulate us and call our expertise to them. This is a Lancaster where the tables do not always seat the same people and leave room for more. This is a Lancaster that embraces new ideas and reverences the past without being chained to it. This is the Lancaster our United Way is working to envision and create, and I invite you into it.

Spending six years at Meals on Wheels taught me so much. I am grateful in the ways I remain connected (board service), but also watching how they are already growing since my departure. I also care deeply about community health and vitality which is why I serve on the Boards of Everence Federal Credit Union, Conestoga Valley Education Foundation, UPMC Lititz, and LG/Penn’s Mission and Community Benefit Committee.
I am humbled by the quiet servants, often women, in our community. People like Sue Parker, Susan Adams, Jean Weglarz, Sue Paxson, Hilary Grant, and Joanne Bauer who have volunteered to lead and serve at multiple places in Lancaster for literally decades, each with little to no recognition. They, and women like them, have covered the cracks where prosperity didn’t follow and ensured a healthier and brighter community for us all. I am grateful to work in their shadow.

There are a thousand reasons why Lancaster is a special place to live. Our amazing historic City is
surrounded by beautiful farmland and filled with people who take initiative to bring about positive change. Industrious, innovative, and progressive energy sets Lancaster apart from other communities. We have the best produce from local farms and enjoy close connections with our neighbors. Lancaster is centrally located between larger cities such as Philadelphia, NYC, and Washington D.C., with access to outdoor adventures (hiking, skiing, boating, beaches) within hours of center city. Lancaster is a top place to live or visit. Giving back and being involved in the community is part of my family legacy. During my 33 years in Lancaster, I have been involved with many worthwhile organizations, but the greatest treasure of our City is the Lancaster Public Library. I am proud to have worked with LPL for the last seven years. In my view, with most of its funding coming from donations, not government, the library does more for the community than any other single entity. It is used by every demographic, and is a true economic equalizer. My hope for the future is that when the Lancaster Public Library opens its doors at Ewell Plaza, we honor it with the financial support needed to continue its great work for everyone. org a n iz at io n & y e a r fo un d e d Henrietta Heisler Interiors, Inc., 2000 Wacker on Walnut, LLC, 2013 Accelerator, LLC, 2017

F Why Lancaster City is a special place. I grew up in Lancaster and raised my family in the city. When I was a kid, I walked all the bustling streets and cut through the back alleys. I knew the city like the back of my hand and could feel its energy and vitality. Over the years, I also witnessed the impact of its economic challenges. Playing a role in the city’s revitalization has been a significant part of my life. Today, Lancaster’s energy and vitality is back, making it a special place that is recognized nationally for its transformation. F How and why you are involved in the City? I have lived in Lancaster my whole life, even attending college at Millersville University. This is, and always has been, my city. Serving as a school board member and being involved with various communityfocused organizations has given me the opportunity to see Lancaster from many different perspectives. I have led Community First Fund over the past 20 years, allowing me to focus my efforts on building a vibrant and healthy community for everyone who lives and works in this great city. F Your hopes for the future. Lancaster is well beyond the tipping point of economic revitalization, and I am so proud of Community First Fund’s role in its transformation. I see a city buzzing with the vitality that I experienced as a kid and building a community that embraces diversity and equality for all.

Lancaster as “among the US cities that form the green shoots of the future of America.” I agree! I’ve loved this City for six decades. As a child, I had a great education in public schools (Go Tornadoes!) and endlessly walked the Wards and neighborhoods visiting friends. Lancaster was a beautiful tapestry of culture and diversity even a generation ago. Today, still rich in history, architecture, education, religion and the arts, Lancaster is a place where guests are common and a hug more familiar than a shrug.

My wife and best friend Justina
My father’s family arrived here in 1869. My great-great grandfather built what is now the Cork Factory Hotel; my great-grandfather was a founder of Armstrong; my grandfather and dad worked in the family business and served on the vestry of St. James Episcopal. Mom served two terms as President of the Junior League before starting her own business. Our family history is interwoven with this community. The unlimited talent and energy of its people assisted in helping me grow a small family business (Dodge Cork) into an industry leading, globally recognized corporation. Saving a community icon motivated my partner and me to rescue Ranck Plumbing from bankruptcy in 2018. And in 2019, our potential for the future inspired me to help form Commonwealth Equity, a fund focused on fostering a circular economy and carbon neutrality while benefiting all stakeholders. No matter where I travel in the world, I’m very proud to call Lancaster my home. ADDRESS, L ANCASTER

When I consider what makes Lancaster a special place to live, work, and play, I believe we are all part of a living organism. Whether it’s business, education, government, arts and culture, or a nonprofit, we’re working together to create a healthy balance that promotes growth and vitality, while also honoring Lancaster’s treasured heritage. At LCSWMA, we view this balance with the lens of community sustainability, which encompasses three pillars: protecting our environment, fostering our economy, and upholding our social values. Putting this into practice, LCSWMA manages around 1 million tons of solid waste annually. We work hard to protect people and the environment, while also extracting value from waste to benefit our community. So, for us, balance looks like preserving land and generating renewable energy to power homes and businesses by combusting the trash at our waste-to-energy facilities instead of landfilling the material. We also invest in organizations and projects that enhance the livability of our community. Balance also looks like a team of solid waste professionals who take our work seriously, but likewise believe that having fun and not taking ourselves too seriously creates a culture of innovation, excellence, and collaboration. My hope for Lancaster is that we approach our collective future with a similar mindset—that we work together to balance our individual needs and institutional interests with the greater public good, and have fun while doing it! Because it’s our collective responsibility to ensure a vibrant future for Lancaster.

My husband Shawn inspires me every day. I’m continually in awe of his kindness, wisdom, humor, compassion, talent, and work ethic. He’s my favorite person in this world and it’s an honor to experience life with him.
After spending more than 25 years in the Philadelphia area, I was amazed upon my arrival here in 2015 to discover the rich history, cultural attractions, and vibrant community which is Lancaster City. A city kid at heart, (I grew up in and near New York City), so naturally I rented a place downtown. I love the way Lancaster welcomes people from around the world. I especially appreciate how churches and people of faith are regarded as part of the very marrow of the town and respected for their contributions. It is my honor to lead First Church, as it lives into its vision to become a vibrant hub of ministry and service to our community. While remaining faithful to our own spiritual heritage, we delight in partnering with a wide variety of churches and community groups with our Anchorage Breakfast program which served over 40,000 free meals last year, our tax preparation ministry, our preschool, and more. As a musician, I am grateful for opportunities to play with The Sound of Roses jazz ensemble, the F&M Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and to lead a church with many teachers and practitioners of music and art, and a church which hosts several community orchestras. The motto of First Church is “Loving Lancaster & Loving the World, and it is my hope that we can be a catalyst for that spirit to infect an ever-widening circle of people in and around this marvelous city.

Here in Lancaster , urban life and rural life are seen as mutually reinforcing, part of a shared purpose. There are no static assumptions. We expect a dynamic environment and even plan for it. Many cities have a bias toward pessimism, but Lancaster remains optimistic despite the real challenges cities face. Through the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, business and higher education are in continual conversation about what will be needed to assure a bright, prosperous future and a good life. I have been part of this ongoing dialogue since 2005 when I came to Franklin & Marshall and became deeply connected to Lancaster and strategic planning. At LVC, we have a vested interest in Lancaster because 1 in 7 of our students is from the City and the County, as well as over 2,000 alumni. Our MBA program is offered at IU13 located at Burle Conference Center. We partner with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Fulton Bank, Brethren Village Retirement Community, Church World Services, and Lancaster-Lebanon Habitat for Humanity. Our students intern in dozens of businesses, health care facilities, and cultural institutions. We expanded our partnerships in Lancaster during the eight years of my presidency. My hope is that LVC will further their involvement and strengthen the alignment. Personally, my wife Dorry and I will continue to live in Lancaster, actively involved with the City and its vibrant educational, cultural, and creative life.

Anything that engages kids in the arts.
That’s synergy. It’s similar to the synergies that Lancaster’s strategic investment in the arts has generated in transforming a struggling post-industrial city into a thriving, vibrant, hip, and attractive place to visit or live. When music, visual arts, theater, design, mural art, culinary arts, and public art come together, their collective impact is transformational. But if we expect artists to continue their creative community impact, we must be willing to support them financially. If we expect to develop and nurture the artists of the future, we must invest in school-based arts programs. And we must double down on programs that allow all citizens to reap the community building, individual therapeutic, and public health benefits the arts offer. So as we look to 2020 and beyond, let’s continue to leverage the synergistic qualities of the arts, as such investment is vital to maintaining our vibrant economy and community. -John Gerdy Visit: ALPHABONEORCHESTRA.COM ADDRESS, L ANCASTER

Marshall Snively President, Lancaster City Alliance
I have a genuine love of Lancaster ; I live, work, and play here. I love the diverse neighborhoods and restaurants, our robust arts community, culture, and great entrepreneurial spirit. I also enjoy the walkability of the city: walking nearly anywhere I need to go, saying hello to friends on the street, and admiring the City’s unique architecture. My life’s work revolves around strengthening urban communities, and it is a pleasure to play a role in our growth as President of Lancaster City Alliance. Our historic neighborhoods are rich in culture, yet continue to evolve in contemporary ways. Lancaster City Alliance and our partners are working to create access to needed goods and services in every neighborhood and to support residents to take ownership of their vibrant communities. So my hope is the same hope that Lancaster City Alliance has for the future: that “Lancaster City flourishes and everyone shares in its success.” The City’s Block by Block Strategic Plan, our Building on Strength Economic Development Strategic Plan, and the Coalition to Combat Poverty’s One Good Job Plan are the roadmap to success. If we continue to collaborate to ensure each plan is aligned, we will accomplish the plans’ goals and demonstrate how to achieve equity and opportunity for all.

Lancaster has been called “The New Brooklyn” after one of the five boroughs of New York City. Like Brooklyn, Lancaster is culturally diverse and each neighborhood has unique characteristics and architectural gems: Historic East Side to Musser Park, from SoWe to Chestnut Hill, from College Hill to the Central Business District. During my 36-year real estate career in Lancaster, the current economy has been a boon to the most comprehensive, most enduring city-wide home improvements, adaptive re-use of commercial buildings, and installation of public art and street beautification. This economic growth is not isolated to the large building projects at F&M College, the Marriott and Convention Center, and Lancaster General Health, but also includes the Central Market area, Fulton Theatre’s expansion, Lancaster Square, and the many smaller neighborhood cafes, yoga studios, breweries, and night spots with vibrant live music. The City is alive and pulsating with business activity. Our county government planning professionals are focused on the next 20 years to ensure that our economy continues
to thrive. We want to preserve our rich cultural heritage, productive farmland, natural and scenic resources, and architectural treasures for future generations. The forecast for Lancaster is bright, and our city is the envy of many other cities. I wouldn’t be surprised if someday, some other city tries to emulate our successes to become “The New Lancaster.”

local visionary Superintendent, Lancaster Mennonite
As a non-native Lancastrian , I am so impressed with the vibrant culture, diversity, thriving art scene, and creative individualism that is encouraged and flourishing in Lancaster City. The renovation and re-imagination of older buildings into restaurants, co-working spaces, and community centers is inspiring. At Lancaster Mennonite (LM), 27% of our students and a large percentage of our employees live in the City. LM people are living out their faith and engaged here. Annually, they participate in the YWCA Race Against Racism (we were awarded the biggest group last year!), and volunteer at organizations in the City like Community Action Partnership, Lancaster County Food Hub, and Church World Service. A student’s education doesn’t happen in isolation, but in community. It’s important for our students to be connected to broader opportunities outside the traditional classroom walls. I am passionate about supporting the local community of nonprofits, artists, and businesses. I am amazed by how many local businesses serve the community and also honor their agricultural roots by buying from local farmers, supporting refugees, and engaging social issues. I envision growing our mentorship and partnership opportunities for our students and teachers with local STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) organizations and individuals, especially through the great leadership and educational resources the Lancaster Chamber provides. I hope LM can tap into the creative ingenuity in the City to encourage our students to start businesses or nonprofits that will inspire and change the world. org a n i zat i on

F Why Lancaster City is a special place. I love traveling and experiencing new places, but Lancaster will always be home. Our people make Lancaster City special; we’re a welcoming and loving city that focuses on building community. We collaborate to move forward and stand together in times of need. Our small business community is exceptional. From Social Enterprises to B Corps, our entrepreneurs focus on making their community better while improving the lives of their neighbors. F How and why you are involved in the City? My parents taught me that the best way to invest in my community is by giving my time. I try to give back to the organizations that were such a vital part of my upbringing in Lancaster City. I’m currently serving on the boards of Tabor Community Services, SACA Development, and Lancaster Recreation Commission. I am a member of the Global Shapers Lancaster Hub and began serving as a member of Lancaster City Council in January of this year.

r e a s on for g rat it ud e I'm grateful for my wife, Linette. She's kind, supportive and inspires me every day.
F Your hopes for the future. I believe Lancaster punches above its weight as a city, and my hope for the future is that we are an example for cities everywhere on how we can not only embrace challenges, but thrive in the midst of them. I imagine a future Lancaster City that collaborates easily with our neighboring municipalities, a future where economic development is inclusive and sustainable, and a future that is stronger and more resilient because of the actions we took today.

Dawn Cox Owner, Prana
Lancaster City is special because it is welcoming, creative, vibrant and diverse. I was concerned that I was giving up those qualities when my family chose to move here 14 years ago from New York City. But I found that refugees, Amish, urban transplants, and native Lancastrians can all feel at home and thrive in the City. I am involved in the City first by living in it, second by owning Prana Functional Manual Therapy. I also volunteer for organizations that make Lancaster City a place I am proud to call home. I feel it is important to get involved and share your skill set to help support your neighborhood. This creates community, instead of just a physical place in which you settle. Prana is part of Lancaster City’s economy by providing jobs with benefits to help families not only survive, but thrive. By skillfully treating patients in a cost-effective manner, we feel we can help people live vivaciously without pain. This may provide them the energy in which to volunteer to give back to their community. As a School District of Lancaster parent, I am assistant director of the Reynolds Middle School spring musical. This takes four months out of my year, but as the director, Samm and I say, “We are not only creating a show, we are helping to create humans.” We are determined to teach life skills along the way of the show process to hopefully create future leaders for Lancaster City. I trust that Lancaster City will stay on this trajectory of support and respect for others, diversity, and creativity, while being good stewards of the finances and keeping our City safe.

“This really is becoming a communityowned movement,” says Lisa. “Every one of these individuals has experienced a transformation on their mat, and they understand the importance of bringing that to the community.”
As the organization enters a stage of maturity, a new board containing yoga enthusiasts with varied business expertise is being cultivated by Lisa Taylor, founder of both Evolution and the A.I.M. movement. By engaging experienced professionals with a passion for uplifting others, Lisa anticipates being able to accommodate even more programming and extend the foundation’s influence even further.
This is the very core of A.I.M. to Empower’s philosophy; that change begins on an individual level. That once we feel a positive change occur within ourselves, we feel compelled to share our joy. From its humble start as a Depression era welding shop in Downtown Lancaster whose technological leadership would revolutionize bridge building, High Steel Structures has become a major force in building and rebuilding America’s infrastructure. The company has produced steel superstructures for thousands of bridges, including some of the most iconic structures in America such as the new Tappan Zee Bridge in New York.
Walk the winding streets of Lancaster’s historic Old Town neighborhood and you might not notice the secret gardens, passageways, and shared common spaces hidden behind its beautiful homes. Home to some of the most historically significant sites in the City, Old Town was condemned to be bulldozed several decades ago until Dale High and a few other investors took it upon themselves to revitalize the neighborhood. Now the area is home to a tight-knit community of city-lovers who adore this charming neighborhood. Old Town is also home to Fig Industries and is where Fig is brought to life.
Through the years, High Steel has built a reputation as an industry leader for its development of innovative processes and materials. They have become a trusted resource who is not afraid to take on the most challenging projects in the industry.
2009: lancaster marriott and convention center Built within the historic façade of the 110-year-old Watt and Shand building, the Lancaster Marriott pays tribute to its celebrated past by preserving the exterior architecture—a masterful Baroque-revival design. After sitting vacant for a decade, and after 11 years of effort and persistence, High and its partners once again made the building the center of our bustling downtown with 416 guest rooms and a convention center that hosts regional and national conventions.
“Service to our community is what it means to be a leader.”
S. Dale High joined his family’s business in 1963. The third and youngest son of founder Sanford High, he went on to grow and diversify High into a respected force in steel and concrete fabrication, steel distribution, commercial and residential real estate, hotels, and more. Today, Lancaster-based High has more than 2,000 co-workers operating 48 locations in eight states. As Chair Emeritus, Dale brings people together to pursue ideas and programs that ensure the economic vitality of Lancaster City, the county, and beyond.

“Women have a unique journey as there are societal expectations that produce feelings of guilt and frustration throughout their lifetime,” Angela said, “I am here to help them find their truth and mission of living out their best life.” A S A N E M P OW E R M E N T C O A C H , author, speaker, mother, and world-ranked track and field athlete, Angela Myers leads by example, driven to help others find their inner truth and live it! From a young age, Angela was motivated to help people. With a degree in social work, she started her career in the foster care system, working her way up to Supervisor of a group home for pregnant teens. She quickly realized that this profession was not the right fit, as she would rather be ‘invited into someone’s journey’ instead of placed or forced into it. After taking a break in her career to start a family, Angela entered into the fitness industry, originally as a way to get herself back in shape after multiple pregnancies. As her fitness increased, she found the world of Masters Track and Field, and began competing as a sprinter, eventually winning National and World titles (most recently bronze in the 100m and 200m events at the 2019 Masters World Regional Championship). As she found fitness for herself, her drive to help others kicked in, and she began coaching and training people towards their fitness goals. This blossomed into a successful fitness business called emPOWER Training Systems. She impacted hundreds of clients, teaching them about nutrition, fitness, and accountability. But during 10 years of empowering clients to reach their fitness goals, Angela discovered there is more to an individual than just external layers of nutrition and fitness. “I started to uncover that there are many layers to an individual,” Angela said. “If someone has a deeper underlying, unaddressed issue such as lack of self-acceptance, eventually the weight will be put back on even with the best fitness and nutrition program.” As she explored and studied the connection between the mind, body, and spirit, Angela repositioned herself in her career path and began her practice as an empowerment coach, speaker, and author of “Living Younger”. She is able to help others uncover their own truth, step into their personal power, and enjoy happier and healthier lives. Learn more about Angela’s journey and business at elevationenterprise.org

BS SF LOCAL BREW TOUR:
Funk Brewing Co. E V E RY T H I N G AW E S O M E starts in a garage. Apple Computers, Nirvana, and Funk Brewing. Jon Norman, known to his friends and customers as simply Norm, and his brother-in-law Kyle Funk began their obsession with creating delicious beer in a turkey fryer in Norm’s Elizabethtown-based garage seven years ago. It turns out that Kyle’s mechanical engineering skills were quite handy in developing delicious brews, and the duo started making delicious beer rather consistently. With Norm’s business background, he set out to see if their dream of opening a brewery could work. The two were able to open the first Funk Brewing Company location in 2014, based on the simple plan to provide delicious beer and excellent service.
54
“It turns out people really like great service and delicious beer,” says Norm. They opened the second Funk Brewing Co. location in Elizabethtown a year later, and the eclectic brewpub draws a loyal following of locals and beer aficionados. Norm’s background in business helps run the brewery, but they have also turned to BSSF for accounting services, managing receivables, finance management, and marketing strategy. Funk Brewing Co. in Elizabethtown has a full menu designed to pair well with each of the beers on the menu, including standard brewpub favorites like wings but also a popular roasted brussels sprouts dish. The spacious Elizabethtown location is available as a banquet space to the public, and can seat up to 60 people with a full catering menu if needed.
The regulars have an ongoing feud between Funk Brewing Co.’s two IPAs. “You’re either on Team Citrus or Team Silent Disco,” says Norm. “And the battle can get pretty heated.” The brewery even had T-shirts created to stoke the IPA rivalry. Stop in to see which IPA team you’ll be cheering for.
This feature is sponsored by BSSF. Committed to their profession and to their community, BSSF is proud to support Lancaster County breweries, small and large, who are shaping the impact that the craft beverage industry has on the future of this county. F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to Lancaster.
Fresh Face: Wick Bar A S YO U E N T E R W I C K B A R , you may find your troubles melting away with the wax you’re pouring into your custom candle vessel. That’s owner Tracy Miller’s objective: to cultivate a peaceful sanctuary. One that encourages us to put down our phones, come together, and make a connection.
“I didn’t want to bring this concept anywhere else,” she says. “I’m here because I felt a bond with Lancaster.”
Tracy had no intention of leaving her comfortable, long-standing job to become an entrepreneur. But after spending a special day with her daughter in Philadelphia, she felt called by a combination of magic and circumstance to introduce the power of quality time to the city…and Wick Bar was born.
It begins as you settle into one of its attentively decorated lounges, designed to comfort and inspire. Among cozy couches and plush pillows, board games are offered to create conversation. You may choose to pop open your favorite bottle of wine (the space is BYOB) and pour yourself a glass. Gather, Create, Pour.
At first glance, Wick Bar’s tagline “Gather, Create, Pour, Repeat” may seem like it only applies to candle making. But guests will find this concept infused into each and every step of their experience.
121 EAST CHESTNUT STREET
When it’s time to create your candle, you and present company have the opportunity to choose a vessel and unique combination of scents. Step by step, you’ll be led through the process of pouring your candle. Gather, Create, Pour, Repeat! Wick Bar is the perfect space for bachelorette parties, showers, company parties, or just because. It offers a little bit of everything: the opportunity to spend time together and a sweet souvenir to remember the experience by. After all, scent is the strongest sense linked to memory!

GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.
Giving Back: Beth Weaver I F T H E R E A R E P E O P L E I N T H I S WO R L D who were born to make a difference, Beth Weaver is undoubtedly one of them. “I’ve always been ‘the helper’,” she says. “But I try to do it quietly. I don’t need acknowledgment...that’s not why I do what I do.” Like most heroes, Beth’s crusade began small—one-on-one, to be exact—as a massage therapist and bodyworker. At the time she had teamed up with Evolution, a Baptiste style yoga studio located downtown, when she stumbled upon a fundraiser for the Bench Mark program (a local charity that teaches weightlifting to at-risk youth). That’s where she had an epiphany on how to extend the reach of her healing to the local community. “I was like, OK; I wanna teach yoga to these kids,” she remembers with resolute clarity. With the support and partnership of Evolution’s founders, Beth’s calling began to materialize as a nonprofit organization called A.I.M. to Empower, where she served as Executive Director. Most notably, the foundation maintains security clearances to teach weekly meditation-infused yoga classes to women at the Lancaster County Prison. Beth receives countless testimonials from inmates who’ve successfully avoided potential conflicts or panic attacks using methods or philosophies she’d taught them in class. While still dedicated to teaching at the prison, a restructuring of the board has led Beth towards new pursuits. As for what’s next for this lightworker? She hopes her path will guide her towards something that will allow her to connect with people exactly where they are. “Whether it’s in the nonprofit world, the corporate world, or the bodyworking world, I hope to be doing work that has a truly lasting effect,” she says, glowing with optimism.

So, they recycle as much as possible—including putting lots of things in the bin that don’t belong—without understanding the negative environmental and economic impacts of all that extra stuff (contamination). This wishful recycling behavior is hurting the recycling lifecycle. And while Lancaster County residents have always cared deeply about recycling, we need to do it right. But how? IT’S HARD TO MISS a growing trend in Lancaster. The words vegan and plant-based are popping up all over the city and surrounding areas. More and more people are looking to limit or completely omit animal products from their diet. Whether this is for health, environmental, or ethical reasons the results are the same: amazing new dishes made with plant-based ingredients right in the heart of Lancaster. Lancaster’s growing vegan movement has inspired some truly incredible meals offered by local restaurants. While fast-food chains and grocers are catching up to the demand for meat and dairy alternatives, the local community in Lancaster has them beat with quality, creativity, and taste. Not only is the food incredible but one of Lancaster’s biggest events is entirely plant-based! The 4th annual Lancaster VegFest will be held on June 6 at Buchanan Park. This all-vegan event will feature
over 150 vendors as far-reaching as Florida and Los Angeles as well as a beer garden, live music, guest speakers, kids area, organic farmers market by Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative, and over a dozen food trucks. Directly following VegFest starts Vegan Restaurant Week. From June 7 to 14 a variety of local restaurants will be featuring vegan specials with a portion of proceeds benefiting Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, our local animal sanctuary that cares for abused and abandoned farm animals. Supporting local businesses is a defining characteristic of Lancaster; this is no different when it comes to the vegan movement. Eat at local restaurants like the ones featured on the following pages (these dishes, YUM!), shop local grocers like Lemon Street Market, join a CSA like Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative, or volunteer at your local nonprofit like Lancaster Farm Sanctuary. The most important impact is that which happens in a community, driven by the people in it.
Downtown Lancaster goes vegan! Many restaurants now offer vegan options so you can dine and drink with intention. Find them on the following pages!

Authentic: Marie Cleaves Rothacker F O R M O S T P E O P L E , the first words that come to mind when thinking about ballet or dance are things like “beauty,” “grace,” or “elegance.” But Marie Cleaves Rothacker, founder of Move It Studio, wants us to rethink those concepts and trade them in for words like “empowerment,” “strength,” and “confidence.” To her, movement is about so much more than just appearances. It’s about capturing the movement of your spirit—not just the muscles in your body. It’s unearthing the power of your potential.
LITITZ: 1180 ERBS QUARRY ROAD
Marie has been a dancer her entire life, but after discovering the more unsavory aspects of its professional industry, she knew she had to find a different avenue of pirouetting to her passion. That’s how she eventually developed “Move It Barre,” a class focused on ballet-based movements and fused with pilates. Then, she opened up Move It Studio; a beautiful and safe space to put the program into practice, while serving the community she called home. And now, as of January 2020, a second Move It location has returned Downtown directly next to Central

But unlike many boutique fitness spaces, you won’t see either studio boasting its “weight blasting” or “quick slimming” benefits. “We exist to empower and uplift through movement, rather than judge,” explains Marie. Instead, the benefits you will see when you consistently attend class include improved coordination, focus, and even grit. She continues, “If a woman truly believes she is good enough, anything is possible.”

Making a positive difference in spaces where people, big and small, live, work, learn, heal, and play. The Lancaster Early Education Center (LEEC ), formerly Lancaster Day Care Center, saw an opportunity and took it when the townhouse adjacent to their existing building on South Queen Street went up for sale. With growing demand for early education and child care services for low-income working families in Lancaster City, LEEC knew doubling their capacity would serve children, their parents, and the community in one of the best ways possible—by giving our youngest a strong start in life through affordable, high quality education in a safe, nurturing environment.

In a nutshell, they meet the most stringent environmental standards—for an environment created specifically for the growth and development of children. Each year, the number of children on waiting lists for quality Pre-K education in Pennsylvania increases, as does the need for services. Access to quality early care and education allows parents to work which helps our community grow and flourish. When families have access to good, affordable child care, they can stay employed and build a better future for themselves and their children. Without affordable child care, many of these families have no choice but to leave jobs or school and sign up for public assistance. LEEC felt the demand for more and better space. And now they have it. Because everyone, big and small, deserves spaces where they can thrive. CEO Nina Moragne, “Our new space has been purposefully designed to provide an optimal learning experience. For our teachers, this means having a classroom that is not overstimulating. For children, this means being able to focus. The noise reducing acoustical ceilings in the classrooms are empowering teachers to teach and children to learn, and that helps us meet our goal to have every child enter kindergarten ready to learn.”

I N 2 0 1 7 , A H I S T O R I C C O L L A B O R AT I O N D E V E LO P E D in an effort to prevent an iconic landmark in downtown Lititz from sitting empty—Wilbur Chocolate Factory. Once chocolate production moved elsewhere, strategic redevelopment was required to revitalize this site which connects the main downtown thoroughfare, Lititz Springs Park, and nearby residential neighborhoods. RGS was brought in to not only create a new land development plan, but to solve a bevy of issues before the work could even begin—floodplain issues, stormwater concerns, historic approvals, and zoning approvals. Led by RGS senior associate Alex Piehl, the design team addressed the issues, desires, and concerns of countless stakeholders including local government, businesses, residents, the adjacent railroad operator, and county and state environmental regulators. As a result of these efforts the existing Wilbur Chocolate Building has been redeveloped to include a hotel with 74 rooms, a restaurant with 150 seats, 4,200 square feet of retail space, and 26 condominiums. 717.715.1396

T H E P OW E R O F S I S T E R H O O D Since its founding in 1746, Linden Hall School for Girls has always represented the covenant of sisterhood. It is a legacy that transcends generations and exists long after students have graduated. At Linden Hall, it’s not only a school that provides strong academic programming for girls in grades 6 through 12, but young women who attend are encouraged to discover and pursue their individual interests, develop their unique skills and talents, and prepare for leadership roles in their future. For the Warfel family, “A community with a strong sense of sisterhood that empowers young women was the perfect fit for our daughters”, said Denise Warfel. For alumna Ava, senior Ella, junior Vienne, and sixth grader Elaine, a diverse community of sisters who are lifelong learners that truly care about each other and the world around them was the perfect place for these sisters to learn and grow as young women. “Each girl brings a generation of difference to the school and welcomes positive change and new ideas to grow our school and community,” said Denise.

Doing Their Part for Lancaster Willow Valley Communities teams up with the School District of Lancaster to support students in Lancaster City While known as a leader in senior living, Willow Valley Communities’ commitment to helping build a stronger Lancaster community includes doing their part for Lancaster’s students. Willow Valley Communities and its residents didn’t hesitate when given an opportunity to help school students in Lancaster City. They’ve supplied Blessing Boxes for schools throughout the School District of Lancaster. The Blessing Boxes are filled with a variety of items such as clothing, hygiene items, and school supplies. Students take what they need and donate what they can. The idea for the Blessing Boxes came from Jessica Pavelko, a Lancaster area resident and the wife of Matt Pavelko, a music teacher at Carter and MacRae Elementary School. Willow Valley Communities residents from their North wood shop constructed the 16 boxes, which give school students the opportunity to be blessed by receiving something they need and also to be blessed by the opportunity to give what they can. Willow Valley Communities is honored to support students in Lancaster City. Read the full story at WILLOW VALLEYCOMMUNITIES.ORG/BLESSINGBOXES 717.464.6800
