community THIS ISSUE M ARK S the 15th anniversary of Fig—a project sparked by a simple idea to package this cool little city and help people see the community through a new lens. We wanted to create space to tell the stories of inspiring entrepreneurs and encourage readers to support small businesses and non-profits. We wanted all of you to love the city as much as we did (and do). That simple mission has not changed and could not be more relevant than it is today. We face many challenges as 2020 comes to a close. This issue symbolizes our heart for the City of Lancaster and for the city’s small business community. And I know that I am not alone. I have been overwhelmed with gratitude for the businesses who have stepped up to support other businesses in Fig this year. We call them our Champions and I could not be more grateful for their incredible heart for Lancaster City. This holiday season, we encourage you to find ways to care for yourself and for others. In our annual Giving Back Guide, you will read about the tireless non-profits who are caring for their neighbors in this unprecedented time. Within that section you will also find ways that you can get involved in local racial equity issues though four programs devoted to equality right here in Lancaster. In our annual Gift Guide, you’ll find 50 local businesses where you can get unique gifts to care for your friends (and for yourself). Fig, along with our partners, will be hosting four festive, city-wide

a heart for
HAVE A HEART Saturdays; Nov. 28, Dec. 5, 12, and 19. Bundle up the family and come to the city to shop, eat, and make memories. Mark your calendars and stay tuned to the Fig social media channels for weekly happenings. They say all things come back around. As I write this, I can think back to the urgency of the message to support the small business community all those years ago. Back then it was aspirational, but over time, a thriving, diverse, and celebrated city has become a reality. When once there were few voices, now there are many. We all love this city and we all have a responsibility to keep it strong by keeping our dollars local this holiday season. It’s still a simple message with a big impact. See you downtown.

F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to the City of Lancaster.
BUSINESS LO G O
Fresh Face: The Black Goat Gastropub ANDREW DE NTON is a Lancaster newcomer, but you wouldn’t be able to tell after eating at his new restaurant, The Black Goat Gastropub, located in the Spring House Taproom on King Street. With a locally sourced food menu, a community-minded business ethos, and an unshakable pride in the city he calls home, Andrew already ticks all of the boxes of being a Lancastrian… and he’s only been living here for a year.
But those 12 months have been actionpacked: between learning butchery craft with Breakaway Farms in Mount Joy while cooking with the locally loved Commons Company, and brainstorming
a business plan for The Black Goat, Andrew and his wife Stephanie (who oversees the restaurant’s marketing) may not be the first out-of-towners to move to Lancaster with hearts in their eyes—but they’ve been some of the quickest to make it home. Andrew brings with him more than a decade’s worth of time behind the line, running the spectrum of cooking styles from fine dining to pub grub. Additionally, he spent years leading and growing teams in kitchens all over Bucks and the Lehigh Valley. Ultimately, Lancaster felt the most like home. “I wanted to be a part of the city,” he
recalls. “People are really humble here, and proud to be from here. I remember thinking, ‘I need to own a business downtown.’”
The menu at The Black Goat Gastropub is playful, locally sourced, and most importantly: affordable. It features unfussy bar food classics like soft pretzels, fries, and wings that are enlivened with inspired, yet familiar, flavors. For Andrew, it’s all about what he simply describes as “good food”— good for the community, good for the local economy, and good for the soul. Taste the goodness for yourself at The Black Goat Gastropub for lunch, dinner, and late night snacks, Monday through Sunday.

Fresh Face: Best Celebrations and More M E Y L I N B E S T is reminding us to continue to celebrate—not despite these challenging times, but because of them. The prospect of opening a business in Downtown Lancaster mid-pandemic would send many people running for the hills. But for Meylin, the services she provides at Best Celebrations and More are essential; with these ever-rising levels of stress, who wouldn’t benefit from a pause to celebrate? Who doesn’t feel like a little kid again in the presence of dozens of vivid, shimmering balloons? “It just brings a smile to someone’s face when you show up with balloons in your hands,” says Meylin, who has spent years in national training programs for balloon sculpture and decor. This is not to mention her 10 years in customer service roles, as well as an education in event management.
When Meylin realized she could combine her love for serving others and her creativity to offer professional balloon design services, she dove head first into the world of entrepreneurship, opening up Best Celebrations and More on South Duke Street to serve Lancaster County. Well aware of the restrictions that would be placed on her brand new business, she developed a clever pivot: with just one phone call, her customers could place a contactless delivery order for balloon arches, columns, and bouquets. She’d even help orchestrate surprises! Meylin believes balloons are more than just decoration; they’re a gesture of appreciation for our loved ones. When times are tough, these expressions and celebrations of each other become even more important. And as our choices 14 SOUTH DUKE STREET

become more limited, Best Celebration and More offers imaginative and convenient solutions to help us do so. Whether we need to brighten a hospital room, party venue, or home, Meylin is taking great precautions to safely deliver balloon decor to customers, contact free. For Meylin, a celebration couldn’t possibly be “Best” without her two children, Jadaya and Jashton, who have been instrumental in her success. As a whole, the family is most looking forward to Valentine’s Day this year— encouraging potential customers to plan ahead for their sweethearts by visiting bestcelebrationsandmore.com or calling, 717.333.5563. Lombardo’s!
A warm welcome awaits you at Lombardo’s, where good food, good conversation, and a great bottle of wine will warm you up, and the friendly staff will make you feel right at home. For nearly 75 years, Lombardo’s has been crafting delicious recipes inspired by the family’s Italian heritage, like the freshest red sauce this side of Napoli, delicate strands of handmade pasta, crunchy-sweet hand-rolled cannoli’s, and so many more favorites. Generations of Lombardo’s cooks have kept the tradition of everything fresh: fresh produce, meats, and other ingredients made into delicious Italian dishes right in the family kitchen.
16
Today Lombardo’s chefs are maintaining that tradition—sourcing fresh ingredients right here from Lancaster County farms. Recently renovated, Lombardo’s décor is as curated as its dishes: custom built walnut-paneled walls, hand painted murals with scenes of Italy and the Lombardo family; Italian marble tile, countertops, and high tables; hand blown wall sconces, and floor to ceiling marble-paneled walls. It is an elevated experience, with a new wine room, piano lounge, and private dining room enclosed in “smart glass,” which tints for privacy. You’re going to love what’s cooking at Lombardo’s: classic family recipes and mouth-watering new dishes inspired by the contemporary flavors of Italy.
There’s so much to experience at the new Lombardo’s. Come celebrate the tradition of warm hospitality and divine Italian dishes cooked with love.

Fresh Face: Tonnino Winery W H E N S O M E T H I N G is ‘from the source,’ it’s often considered to be of the highest quality. In the world of Italian wines this statement couldn’t be any truer. Tonnino Azienda Vitivinicola, or the Tonnino Winery, is a small Italian wine producer based in Alcamo, Sicily. In late 2018, Tonnino’s international operations struck on a unique opportunity that has since established Lancaster City as the home for its exclusive storefront location in the U.S. After visiting Lancaster on business, Antonio Tonnino made the decision to establish the Red Rose City as the spot for Tonnino’s U.S. storefront. It was from these visits that the
uniqueness of Lancaster shined through. “I have always been curious about new realities and different cultures…I was immediately struck by the City of Lancaster,” Tonnino said. In early 2020, Tonnino Winery opened its storefront on 945 North Plum Street in Lancaster City. When asked on his thoughts of Tonnino’s decision to open a U.S. storefront, Tonnino’s U.S. brand ambassador, Alessandro Sgro said, “We were ecstatic that Tonnino had made the investment in a U.S. storefront and what better place than Lancaster.” Even before the opening of its storefront, Tonnino had been a staple choice in a number of local eateries
945 NORTH PLUM STREET

BUSINESS LO G O
Fresh Face: Lancaster Pickle Company I T ’ S N E V E R T O O L AT E to find your calling. For Jason Ziegler, that calling is pickles. A native of South Philadelphia, Jason moved to Lancaster at the age of 17 to live with his father. When he was 20 years old, he ran his own automobile dealership. But it was in 2010 that Jason, in a desire to move on from cars, decided to set his sights on pickles. “I was one of the first in Lancaster County to have a retail store selling pickles,” says Jason. “Since then, there have been four or five other pickle companies that have arisen. What sets us apart from the rest is that we have what’s called a Clean Label product, meaning our pickles are made from scratch and contain no preservatives
this year. Fortunately, Lancaster Pickle Company’s patrons never wavered in their support of the business.
—only spring water and Lancaster County made spices.” In 2012, prior to opening a downtown storefront, Lancaster Pickle Company mainly operated out of Jason’s garage in Mountville, Pennsylvania. “It got so large that the state asked me to get a brick and mortar.”
“COVID-19, I think, actually helped us,” says Jason. “When we reopened, the loyal customers that valued our product and employees stood behind us and came right back to our new location.”
In addition to their signature pickles, Lancaster Pickle Company offers pretzels, chocolate, candy, nuts, and potato chips, which are also made right here in Lancaster with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Like many entrepreneurs, Jason has had to weather the challenges and uncertainties of the global pandemic— including a three-month closure earlier
In August, Lancaster Pickle Company relocated to 318 North Queen Street (formerly, Then & Again Antiques). A dedicated website is currently in development, but in the interim, please be sure to visit their Facebook page for more information on product offerings, hours of operation, and other company updates.

F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to the City of Lancaster. Founding sisters, Laura Mae and Amanda Jean
Fresh Face: Maejean Vintage M A E J E A N V I N TA G E S I S T E R S , Laura Mae and Amanda Jean love a good story. Nothing excites them more than hunting for vintage jewelry at local estate sales and auctions, then piecing together its history using their decades’ worth of expertise. These sisters aren’t just graduate Gemologists (both receiving diplomas from The Gemological Institute of America)— they are bonafide historians. This combination of passion and mastery is at the core of their success at Maejean Vintage, where they provide an online jewelry shopping experience like no other. “We act like detectives and try to find as much out as we can about each piece,” explains Laura Mae. They begin
by looking into its ‘maker’s mark,’ if it has one, to determine a possible date and location of its creation. Then, they test its metals and gemstones for additional information and to verify its authenticity. Lastly, they combine all of these tangible facts with what they know to connect the dots.
“A majority of our inventory is sourced locally in Lancaster, and then made available to clients worldwide,” says Amanda Jean. Though Maejean Vintage is operated exclusively online, it was important to her and Laura Mae that they lived and worked in the heart of the community they called home.
This process was born out of years of the sisters’ genuine curiosity and hands-on practice, and also of their collective education. In addition to earning Gemology diplomas, Amanda Jean’s degree in Business Management from Temple and Laura Mae’s in Education from Millersville University demonstrates not only a depth of professional knowledge, but reveals their affinity for local life and reveal history.
Today, Maejean Vintage serves customers worldwide as a 6-woman Lancaster-local team from a private office right in the heart of the city. You can take a step back in time with them at maejeanvintage.etsy.com, or browse their exceptional collection on instagram (@maejeanvintage). From our family to yours S. Clyde Weaver Seasonal Favorites
Smoking meat is one of the oldest food preservation methods dating back to ancient times. In addition to preservation, it is also an artful and scientific way to add flavor as well as a rich, brown color to meats.
Sam Clyde and Emma Weaver found joy in serving others and a knack for smoking meats. In 1920, they started smoking meats at their family home and selling them at the Lancaster City Northern Market on North Queen Street, moving to Lancaster Central Market in 1929. Business was good for over a decade when Clyde and Emma discovered an innovation which would bring the daily sandwich to a new level: Boiled Ham. In a day where dried beef, Lebanon bologna, sweet bologna, and canned corn beef were brought to the market warm and sliced on site as the staple lunch meats, it was no wonder that the new method, which included cooking smoked ham overnight with sugar and spices, changed the game for a ready-to-eat sliced meat. They also added cheese to their repertoire. Round wooden boxes of 80-pound cheddars from Wisconsin and 200-pound wheels of Swiss Cheese from Ohio would be delivered to the East Petersburg train station where they would be stored next to large barrels of dill pickles in their basement near the smokehouse.

S. Clyde Weaver continued to grow through the years as they expanded into Lebanon, Rosemont, Upper Darby, Coatesville, and Sharon Hill. The year 1961 brought a new building in East Petersburg which included a retail store to better service their customers. This store still serves as S. Clyde Weaver’s main location. As Weavers is always looking for innovative ways to service their customers, they found an opportunity to work with a dairy co-op in Quebec and purchase exceptional Canadian Cheddar in the 1980’s. This particular cheese was perfect for long-term aging. Weavers ages this cheese to 5, 7, and 10 years. You can find it today (named Super Sharp Canadian Cheddar) in any of their stores. In addition to their quality meats and cheeses, Weavers rounds out their offerings with their own confections to include Lancaster County favorites such as shoo-fly pie and whoopie pies. You’ll also be able to fill your fridge with their staple lunch meats, scrapple, bacon, and new, healthier options such as “nitrate free” turkey lunch meat. 2020 marks 100 years of S. Clyde Weaver serving and supporting Lancaster County and surrounding areas. Today, a lot of the same recipes and smoking methods from the 1920’s are still being used—from hams being hand processed to cookies being rolled, cut, and hand-decorated—S. Clyde Weaver stays true to their 100-year heritage. Though their smoking methods have remained virtually unchanged for a century, their way of doing business hasn’t. Weavers is committed to bringing the best of Lancaster County and the region to your table. You can take advantage of their new,

Clyde Weaver recognizes a need to respond to the current health issues so that they may better support the Lancaster community and beyond. “We have had the privilege of serving the community at our two stores and eight market stand locations over these last 100 years. We will adapt and change, while continuing to offer good food and warm hospitality.” You can take advantage of their new, curbside pickup and a wide array of items available for delivery by visiting sclydeweaver.com. Spring House Brewing Company
T H E L AT E S T S T O P O F T H E B S S F L O C A L B R E W T O U R takes us to 209 Hazel Street, home of Spring House Brewing Company, which opened in 2015.
In 2011, that level of recognition resulted in the grand opening of The Taproom on 25 West King Street, which helped lay down the foundation for its Hazel Street location’s debut four years later.
Spring House Brewing Company’s owner, Matt Keasey, was an accomplished homebrewer and barbecue enthusiast with a background in pharmaceutical chemistry, having earned accolades for his chocolate stout, smoked porter, and pilsner entries.
Since March, Spring House Brewing Company has been focusing on the expansion of its brand: collaborating with artists, supporting social initiatives, making in-house renovations, forging distribution partnerships throughout the midAtlantic, and, of course, brainstorming new beers.
“After winning homebrewing awards, numerous friends suggested that I should start a brewery,” says Matt. “After we moved into our home in Conestoga, I decided that the vacant barn on our property would be the perfect location for a small brewery.”
“We have many goals,” says Scott Richardson, Director of Operations and Market Development. “But our top three are: (1) to make good beer, (2) love up our community, and (3) have fun. Beer and having a good time is how this all began. The beer industry has become more competitive over time and we welcome that change as long as we don’t take it too seriously. We love the creative energy that is going into beer and we hope to offer some of that inspiration to the world too.”
To Matt’s credit, Spring House Brewing Company, already known for its chocolate peanut butter stout and pumpkin ale, was instrumental in introducing new styles of craft beer to the region.

WRITER’S NOTE
Conestoga, PA, is a small town in rural Lancaster County that history buffs cite as the birthplace of the Conestoga Wagon, cigar aficionados acknowledge for helping coin the term “stogie,” and local craft beer fans recall as that place they used to trek to for a taste of Spring House brews (and the occasional pig roast). Today, the Spring House Brewing Co. headquarters is located in the southwest corner of historic Lancaster, Pennsylvania—where early German settlers have brewed beer since the late 1800’s.

The North Museum has expanded their educational offerings in 2020 in order to adapt to the needs of our visitors and community. As local businesses and the museum were forced to close in March, they launched North Museum @ Home, a multi-tiered resource program that includes learning packs, grabn-go STEM education boxes, virtual tours, and online-only content. As the school year began, and parents and children adjusted to virtual learning, they launched School @ The North Museum, a program that pairs certified educators and a wide array of museum resources with students fulfilling their online schooling requirements in a socially distanced, limited capacity classroom setting. GI V I NG BACK When the coronavirus pandemic hit, United Way of Lancaster County’s 211 service didn’t LOGO miss a day. The talented team of 211 specialists, like Patricia, have been serving the community from their homes.
UNITED WAY OF LANCASTER COUNTY Meet Patricia Espinosa-Vargas, a Quality Assurance and Training Coordinator with Pennsylvania 211 East at United Way of Lancaster County. In her 20 years of service, she has heard many heart breaking stories—from a single father sharing his fears of not having enough formula and diapers, to a sister needing to locate treatment services for her brother active in addiction. These are all real-life conversations that those whom call 211 have LOGO with the Information and Referral Specialists served by the 24-hour/ 7-day a week community helpline.
The current pandemic has made Patricia’s job more challenging yet extremely rewarding, as she shares: “Our friends and neighbors are struggling with day-to-day expenses like food and utilities. The needs are so great, we want to ensure that those who call 211 know that help is out there. Knowing where and how to access community resources like food pantries, detox facilities, and shelters is just as important as the agencies that provide those direct services. Lancaster County is rich with resources, and we are fortunate to have United Way to support our work in helping the community…one referral at a time.”
MISSION United Way of Lancaster County’s mission is to mobilize the caring power of our community to achieve impactful social change. G E T I N V O LV E D Don’t underestimate what you can do for Lancaster County. Give, advocate, or volunteer today! Visit UnitedWayLancaster.org to learn more.

OLIVIA & NATALIE BLOCHER These sisters worked together to “bring a little extra joy to the neighborhood” in the early weeks of the pandemic. Said Olivia, “We decorated our window with uplifting messages, and delivered flowers and homemade cards to neighbors.”
KOBE WEST “My fondest memory of Horizons was working with a particular student who sat alone at lunch and recess and was not very talkative. I decided that I would be his buddy and would work and play with him to make sure he felt included. It meant a lot to form that connection.”
LOUISE BLOOM “This was my sixth summer taking part in Horizons at LCDS,” Louise said. The program helps children in the School District of Lancaster keep learning over the summer. “Horizons is donor-funded and Meg Reed, the executive director, is a superstar and amazing mentor to me. Her commitment to educating every student who walks through the Country Day doors, whether LCDS kids or Horizons kids, is unmatched.” ADMISSIONS@LANCASTERCOUNTRYDAY.ORG

T hat’s My Ballpark! T H I S H A S B E E N A D I F F I C U LT Y E A R for all of us. For the Barnstormers, their season was cancelled, and they were forced to reimagine what Clipper Magazine Stadium could be for the community.
Thank you for supporting our Lancaster community in so many creative ways. We are cheering for YOU!
This summer and fall, the stadium became a safe space for many non-profit organizations and businesses to gather together and celebrate what’s best about the Lancaster community, our team spirit! They turned the stadium into a food drive location, a testing station, a makers market, concert stage, and a lot more!
As we all rallied to reinvent ourselves, we want to thank the Barnstormers for being shelter from the storm. Thank you for supporting our Lancaster community in so many creative ways. We are cheering for YOU!

Empowering stories about women who have big ideas and get things done.
L A U R A W I L L , equipped with her mother’s KitchenAid mixer and a love for cooking and baking, started her business just baking for friends. In the height of the cupcake boom, Laura’s ability to make beautiful and delicious cupcakes created a demand in her community and as word spread about how Laura’s ‘made from scratch’ cupcakes were making lives sweeter, she and her husband realized they were going to need a bigger kitchen. Within a year, Scratch Bakes outgrew their first location in Ephrata and resettled in a larger space, and now they’ve got a second shop in Lancaster.
fundraiser, and potluck hostess, Laura’s mother showed love and care to everyone she engaged with and still managed to put her family first. This inspired Laura to do the same through her cooking, baking, and sharing food with her customers, feeling this is an extension of her home and self. She carries her mother’s legacy of nourishing and encouraging others and she’s grateful to have her own family’s support and involvement in Scratch Bakes. For many, what sets Scratch apart is the warmth and kindness they’ve come to expect when they visit.
Laura says, although her mother wasn’t a baker, she inspired the way that Laura does baking and business. As a pastor’s wife, Laura describes her mother as someone who loved people through whatever she did. In her various roles as a leader, community organizer,
“I hope that anyone who interacts with me can feel that I’m sincere and genuine and realize how much it means to me and how grateful I am that people choose to share their time with us,” Laura says. She also says, as a self-taught baker and cook, she’s not pretentious about food.
“Food is for everybody. I want everyone who visits Scratch to feel welcome, ask questions, and feel a collaborative spirit and get involved. I want to be someone who people can come to.” Laura feels so inspired by being able to roll her hobby and passion into her business. She loves trying new things, testing recipes, collaborating with, and even mentoring other women entrepreneurs. Laura Will is inspiring others by the way she pours her heart and soul into everything that she makes. She’s humbled and blessed to be a part of so many people’s precious milestones and celebrations and she’s inspired to keep loving others through her work. “Scratch is me. It’s who I am, and what I love, and how I love other people.” You can read about Laura and order baked goods by visiting her website, scratchbakes.com

Armstrong Ceilings Can Make the Difference We spend 90% of our time indoors. In itself that makes a strong case for healthy spaces. But now more than ever spaces that are healthy and fit for people and planet are essential … in any and every setting … schools, offices, restaurants, transportation and hospitality centers, stores and shops. So what makes a healthy space? At Armstrong, we believe a healthy space is planned, designed and built to be safe, sustainable and inclusive. A healthy space cultivates comfort, well-being, productivity, creativity, collaboration and confidence. As the structural capstone of any space, the right ceiling can make all the difference by bringing the elements of a healthy space together – air flow and quality, great light, acoustics and aesthetics – so people can be together to live, work, learn, heal, play … and thrive. That’s what we’re about … healthier, safer spaces here in Lancaster, our home base, and beyond. To learn more, call us at 1-877-276-7876 or visit our website.

Protecting Today,
Fostering Tomorrow DURING A TIME FILLED WITH CHANGE AND UNCERTAINT Y, WE OFTEN LOOK FOR PL ACES OF STABILIT Y AND HOPE IN THE WORLD. There are many such instances of this commitment and optimism in Lancaster, and LCSWMA is proud to be a part of this effort. Our role includes serving people and protecting the environment, while helping to create a sustainable future. Once your waste and recycling are picked up by private haulers, LCSWMA manages the material through our Integrated System. This system diverts waste away from the landfill and creates clean, renewable energy. In fact, we power local homes and businesses from the stuff you throw away. But LCSWMA can’t do this alone. We need your help to ensure the right materials go in their correct place. Only the Big 4 should be placed in your recycling bin: corrugated cardboard, metal food and beverage cans, plastic bottles and jugs with necks, and glass bottles and jars. All other materials should be disposed of as trash, which we transform into renewable energy. Thanks for doing your part to protect the environment and helping to keep Lancaster clean and beautiful! —The team at LCSWMA Learn more about how to properly handle your recyclables and waste by visiting lcswma.org.

Skilled master cosmetic injector
“A
E S T H E T I C M E D I C I N E offers us the ability to address cosmetic issues and concerns without expensive surgery or downtime. Cosmetic injections can be as permanent or temporary as our patients wish, but can also be as subtle or dramatic—putting my client in control of their desired outcome. Advances in aesthetic lasers have elevated the treatment experience to the level of ‘soft surgery,’ where results can be nothing short of stunning.” —Adrienne
CLIENT’S GOAL Our patients are fighting the ravages of time and aging. We’ve become a “selfie” culture with social media and virtual meetings now dominating our lives. Our faces have become our brand and almost a currency with which we conduct business and try to bridge the gaps in our currently disrupted social lives. Our work has our clients looking their best and gives them the selfconfidence they need to take on the world.
THE SOLUTION I believe that taking the time, not only to hear a patients’ concerns, but to truly listen and understand them makes all the difference and assures that we will meet expectations. It is also very important to thoroughly explain the process, how and why the treatment will address their concerns, and to make sure the patient has realistic expectations. We can make beautiful change happen but I am always sure to be realistic.
“
The difference between a satisfied patient and a happy patient begins with the consultation.” 96
