Same team, same process.

New name, new look.

For the last decade, West Chester Design Build has evolved from a small local business to an awardwinning home remodeling company through the leadership and creativity of Chris and Angela Payson. “It has always been a dream of ours to simplify the remodeling experience for our customers,” says Chris. “We believe that in order to do that you must have an amazing process, an outstanding team, and a design studio where customers can see and feel all the elements of their home remodel.” Following their dream led the Paysons to purchasing an old historical barn on West Chester Pike. For the past 2 years they have been working to build a design studio that will not only help them better serve their customers, but also become a gathering place for the community. Realizing that the company was not only growing but transforming, Chris and Angela felt called to make one more momentous change to their business. “West Chester Design Build” has served them well over the years, but home remodeling is about a lot more than designing and building. The true heart of the company revolves around positively transforming people’s lives.

It is my place that I go to get away from the noise—my place to think, reflect, and focus, free from the distractions that seem to be so pervasive at work. align.Space is also a great place to bring others, and I frequently hold meetings here; it is great for 1-1 meetings with a client or partner, and I also utilize the many conference rooms for company meetings and strategic planning sessions. align.Space is a versatile work space that fills different needs for me and has become a vital part of my weekly routine.”

R I C K S P A N O | CEO, Spano Industries Consumer Direct “We have had many ‘traditional’ work spaces over the years where you own or lease your own dedicated space. We switched to this space for multiple reasons. You can still have your own dedicated space or flex space here. Also, great people run the space and are completely accommodating at all levels. We are also able to collaborate with other companies and individuals in the space about many different topics. There is strength in this concept, and I believe everyone wins!”

Find time for yourself

L ANDSCAPE DESIGN + BUILD LIVING WELL means finding time for yourself. We have all heard the statistics on how much damage stress does. Our lives are so busy with our responsibilities and commitments, but the answer is right in front of us. Finding time for yourself begins at home! The studies show that shorter and more frequent trips away are better for your health than longer trips once a year. How much better is it to have moments to unwind every week, or better yet, every day? Create a space where you can unwind and de-stress in a backyard dream space that is perfectly suited for you and your family and is beautiful and functional for decades to come!

It’s not you. It’s your hormones! B E B A L A N C E D is a non-medical approach to solving stubborn weight gain, PMS, and menopausal symptoms. The program is an all-natural way to renew your energy and confidence. Beyond weight loss, the goals they focus on are rebalancing hormones, resetting metabolism, identifying foods that put weight on, and alleviating hormonal issues associated with imbalanced hormones and stress. Linda Barilani, the owner of BeBalanced in West Chester, opened here in August. Owning a center in Wyomissing, she was moved by the impact this program had on the women in that area and wanted to share it further. “We change women’s lives! They come to us feeling as if there is no hope. Once they are on our program they get their energy back, feel great, combat hot flashes, insomnia, and night sweats, and lose weight. It is amazing to watch and the most rewarding job I’ve ever had.”

Serving the whole child NURTURING THE THREE DIMENSIONS: ACADEMIC, PHYSICAL, AND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL

THERESA SARDELLA, R.N., M.S. Health Center Director Oversees the Health Center and the health and wellness needs of students across the three divisions. She leads a group of vibrant, caring nurses who are dedicated to providing excellent healthcare to students every day.

MARIA ALONSO, PH.D. Clinical Psychologist Guides Westtown’s three-divisional Integrated Learning, Health & Wellness Team, composed of Nurses, Learning Specialists, School Counselors, Psychologists, and Psychology Externs. She works closely with students, faculty, and parents to ensure that Upper School students have the appropriate learning and social-emotional support needed to thrive and excel at school and beyond.

WESTTOWN SCHOOL is dedicated to serving the whole child with an unparalleled, integrated approach. Administrators, faculty, and staff work and collaborate within and across divisions to achieve this unified approach using researched, evidence-based practices. Traditionally, schools have focused on and supported the cognitive aspects of child development. They know now more than ever that if a child is not physically or social-emotionally healthy, their learning and academic success is impeded. The team at Westtown is committed to nurturing all three dimensions in order to serve the whole child and ensure that they can reach their full potential.

DOT SALSBURY, M.ED Middle School Learning Specialist COREY YOUNG, M.ED & KIM CULCASI (not pictured) Upper School Learning Specialists Work directly with students to help them discover who they are as learners and to develop the tools and strategies that promote academic success. Learning Specialists also work with faculty to help them implement teaching interventions and creative strategies to further support student achievement in the classroom.

JESSICA MORELY, PSY.D. School Psychologist Oversees educational testing across the three divisions to support student learning and academic achievement. She spends her time working with students, faculty, and parents to ensure that Lower School students’ social-emotional needs and well-being are nurtured and well supported.

ELIZABETH RILEY, M.ED. School Counselor Works with Middle School students, providing them with the social and emotional support and decisionmaking tools necessary to become healthy, engaged learners, and positive community members. She also co-leads a peer counseling program with Maria in the Upper School to promote positive peer mentoring and social-emotional health and awareness among the student body.

Community. Faith. Compassion.

FRIENDSHIP. IT IS HARD TO DESCRIBE, BUT YOU KNOW WHEN YOU HAVE FOUND IT. All of life’s most meaningful moments are remembered in light of who was there with us. Project 938 believes that God works in our lives together. Healthy living happens in the context of a community of friends, and healthy friendships foster a better community. Project 938’s first value is to “build community.” Knowing God’s love and showing God’s love is something that happens when we are together. And we come together to find friendship, life’s most special ingredient.

GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.

Giving Back: Dave & Kim DiBiaggio T H E H A R D E S T M O V E I N G Y M N A S T I C S is the triple double (a double back flip with three twists). But organizing the largest USAG women’s gymnastics meet in the nation with 4,000 athletes from over 100 gyms to raise thousands of dollars for Unite for HER, while also educating about breast and ovarian cancer care and prevention, may be even more challenging. Pink Invitational organizers Kim and Dave DiBiaggio, however, would be quick to say that this is nothing compared to the battle millions of women wage against breast and ovarian cancer. And they couldn’t do it without their family and a core group of dedicated volunteers who have become dear friends. “It’s more than a meet—it’s an event,” Kim says. Every February, the Pennsylvania Convention Center is transformed into “a six-ring circus” featuring over 50 sessions, celebrity gymnasts, patient testimonials, healthy living education, and vendors. Kim spends months planning, rostering, and scheduling, and Dave makes sure the complicated scoring goes smoothly so everyone gets the correct pink medal. “It’s part of our lives now,” Dave says. And it’s such a special event that gyms return year after year. Unite for HER, founded by breast cancer survivor Sue Weldon, provides support and integrative therapies like massage, acupuncture, and nutritional counseling to help restore breast and ovarian cancer patients during and after medical treatments. Grateful patients are often amazed by what a difference this kind of comprehensive healthcare can make. Kim and Dave are so committed to helping these women they add something new to their version of the triple double every year. This year, it’s adding level 2 gymnasts and 300 athletes. What's new for next year?

AUTHENTIC Leading the way through innovation and example.

Authentic: David & Dawn Cassel L I K E M A N Y P E O P L E , D AV I D A N D D AW N C A S S E L had driven past Natural Lands’ ChesLen Preserve countless times without realizing what was there. When their daughter ran the ChesLen Chase for Open Space in 2016, they walked the course and learned about Natural Lands’ Force of Nature volunteer training program. It was exactly what they’d been looking for—something they could enjoy doing together while supporting a cause they care about. The Cassels learned a lot during the six-week course, from how ecology works to what riparian buffers do.

“Now we’re more aware of what we’re seeing,” says David. They also met great people who share a common interest. David and Dawn have a computer consulting business, and David’s favorite way to de-stress is to hike. The interactive ExploreNLT app, he says, is a great guide for exploring the many different Natural Lands preserves. As a birder, Dawn particularly enjoys monitoring progress in the busy nest boxes at Stroud Preserve. She was also inspired to work with her daughter’s Girl Scout troop to put up nest boxes in a park near their Downingtown home and to create a native plant garden in their backyard. “Now we see hummingbirds

drinking from flowers, instead of feeders,” she says. Natural Lands’ mission is to save and care for open space and connect people to nature. In addition to conserving land, they organize projects like planting trees and pulling invasives so native species can thrive. “But it’s not all physically demanding work,” David says. “There are volunteer opportunities for everyone.” David and Dawn enjoy connecting others to nature through sharing what they’ve learned and encourage people to find out more on the Natural Lands’ website or at Meetup.com. Go play outside!

Scientists found an antidote to stress that would lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, increase self-esteem, reduce anxiety, and improve overall feelings of well-being? And what if this remedy cost nothing and had no side effects? Although your mother probably didn’t mention the positive effects of negative ions, her advice to go play outside and get some fresh air was very wise indeed.

Anecdotally, we know we feel better after we go for a walk or a run or spend time outside. But there’s also increasing scientific evidence for the very real benefits of the great outdoors. A recent study at the University of Exeter found that people who spend a total of just two hours a week in parks or other natural environments report substantially better health and psychological well-being. The Japanese practice of “forest bathing” (being in the presence of trees) brings similar benefits. Here in Southern Chester County, we’re surrounded by the cure— a wealth of stunning open spaces to explore. Here are just a few: Natural Lands’ preserves offer miles of trails through varied terrain including woodlands, meadows, and stream valleys. In addition to the nearby Stroud and ChesLen preserves, find beautiful vistas, trails, and birdwatching at Sadsbury Woods in Coatesville, Wawa Preserve in Media, and Willisbrook in Malvern. Download the interactive ExploreNLT app for trail maps at your fingertips. In Wester Chester Borough, you don’t have far to go to find a variety of green spaces including Fugett, Everhart, Hoopes, and Bayard Rustin parks.

The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC) provides “TLC” for the environment and residents through preserving and stewarding spaces including the Chandler Mill Nature Center and Preserve in Kennett Township and Stateline Woods in Kennett Square. We also have Longwood Gardens—one of the world’s premier horticultural display gardens that includes the 86-acre Meadow Garden—on our doorstep. The 2.6-mile Struble Trail offers walkers, runners, and bikers a scenic meander along the Brandywine Creek towards Downingtown. Find the entrance and parking lot off Norwood Road in Downingtown. The Chester Valley Trail is a paved rail-trail between Exton Park at East Swedesford Road and King of Prussia. Just under 15 miles long, the trail is perfect for strollers, commuting cyclists, or even colleagues on a walking meeting.
