Together, we move forward 2020 — A YE AR FOR THE HISTORY BOOK S . As I write this letter from my home office, the world looks very different than it did when our last issue was released in early March. Our town is slowly emerging from quarantine and we find ourselves amidst an on-going health crisis, an uncertain economic climate, and an impassioned urgency to listen, learn, and take action against racism. Each of these events have acutely reminded us of how precious life is. How precious our neighbors are. And how critical it is to use this time of crisis as a force for good. Amongst the turmoil, there is also a great sense of hope. We have witnessed so many stories of unity, generosity, and collaboration here in our community. Neighbors sprang into action in creative ways bringing relief to individuals and businesses. Peaceful protests allowed long-silenced voices to be heard. We all began to pivot, learn, and grow as a community. And in just three months, our town began operating in new ways—to reach customers, gather congregations, and host events. Call it forced innovation if you will, but it’s inspiring, and it’s working. In this issue, you’ll read how, in the face of constant uncertainty, our local small businesses are moving forward one day at a time. Not only that, but they are being supportive and generous to their fellow business owners and neighbors. I only wish we could share every single story because each one deserves to be told. This issue is dedicated to the resiliency and ingenuity of our local small business owners and non-profits. At Fig, we are a small business ourselves. So we know first hand what it’s like to face these new challenges, make tough decisions, and keep going. It is in this spirit that we made a big decision. Some of you may know that we have a sister publication called Fig Kennett. Our neighbors! The footprint of our distribution is directly adjacent to theirs. So for this special edition of Fig, we decided to combine the two books into one so that every business featured inside gets double the readers they
normally get. We hope you enjoy seeing some of our business friends from Kennett mixed in with our friends from West Chester. At a time when all of us are thinking of ways to use our resources for the greater good, this was our way of pitching in. And speaking of pitching in, it is with humble hearts that we say thank you to our essential and frontline workers for their heroic contributions to the community. Words cannot express how much we value their work ethic, their bravery, and their sacrifice. We are in awe. And finally, we must mention the graduating class of 2020. They are being launched into life in an unexpected, but exciting way. We can only imagine that this experience will stay with them as they lead us through future challenges that our society will surely face. And that this will make them stronger and more appreciative for all that they achieve. Thank you, Fig readers, for loving all things local. B A C K I N M A R C H , C H A R L I E & C O Barber Shop owner and lifelong resident of West Chester, Amy Rose Trout, decided to hang a pattern of colorful hearts in her storefront window after seeing the idea on Instagram. She wanted to show gratitude to her customers and the community for their support, and also show how her shop was still an active part of the community, even though the doors were temporarily closed. She considers the hearts installation an outward expression of how much we all love our town, while bringing hope and joy to everyone who sees it. After posting a photo of it on her Instagram account and using the hashtag #aworldofhearts, you could say that hearts caught on fire, as many other business owners were inspired to join in. Within a couple weeks almost 100 storefronts adorned colorful hearts, all displayed in their own creative ways.

Authentic: Chris Thompson, Philter Coffee P H I LT E R 2 . 0 looks different, but it still feels like home. That’s because owner and “coffee guy” Chris Thompson has redesigned the wellloved space not for some strange new normal but to welcome the community, as he has from the beginning, to an attractive space with friendly staff and really good coffee and food. On March 16, Chris rearranged payment schedules, deep cleaned, waited to reopen. As the days wore on, he created an online shop that also provided an outlet for local makers, expanded his product line, began making deliveries, and even sold a house through the

website. “I have stories to tell my grandkids someday,” he says with a smile. Through the dark-shuttered months of the shutdown, Philter was Kennett Square central—a place to pick up Philter orders, but also to drop packages, pick up masks, and chat with Chris, smiling behind his laptop, through the open door. That door was open as he prepared to open in 2013, too. What he lost in efficiency he more than made up in building relationships. He’s had time to reflect on how the community has evolved since then and to strategize changes that make sense

for the long-term. “As scary as it’s been, it’s also exhilarating—entrepreneurs thrive in pushing through challenges,” he says. With Ceremony Coffee, he developed the 64 (aka six fo’) and invested in tools to take advantage of advances in brewing for consistency and efficiency. In the days leading up to re-opening in June, Philter’s social media feed was filled not with products but with images of Kennett Square’s peaceful and powerful Black Lives Matter protest. “It seems like we’re all remembering what’s most important,” Chris says.

Giving Back: Keith Ciarlello of MacLaren Kitchen and Bath SOM ETI M ES A CRISIS HE LPS US R E A L I Z E W H AT we are capable of accomplishing. MacLaren Kitchen and Bath’s general manager, Keith Ciarlello never dreamed they would be able to support local frontline heroes using their somewhat niche manufacturing capabilities. At the start of the pandemic, a friend at Chester County Hospital asked if MacLaren Kitchen and Bath could access plastic film for face shields. So Keith went to the drawing board to create a design that their machines, normally used for slicing through granite slabs and countertops, could cut. Then they gathered samples of plastic and foam and began prototyping. That, as it turns out, was the easy part.

After buying out all local suppliers, they searched overseas. “The hardest part was the elastic,” Keith says. “Every distributor was sold out of the proper width for face shields.” Then he realized he could use the plastic film to create a strap with a sliding lock mechanism. His wife, a maternity nurse at Paoli Hospital, tried every prototype until they got it right. Once their machines had cut the shields, straps, and foam for 1,500 shields, they assembled a socially distanced team in their large tool shop to assemble them by hand.

SHARING VITAL RESOURCES West Branch Distilling Company is well known around Chester County as a producer of vodka. But owner and distiller, Kevin Roberts, knew he was in a unique position to help produce something different after the pandemic hit—hand sanitizer. He and PO-MAR-LIN Fire Company Fire Police Captain, Andy Skean, coordinated a donation of Roberts’ first batch of hand sanitizers to local first responders this spring. KIDS CAN HELP TOO VIRTUAL FUNDRAISING
The Pia family, including their six grandchildren decided to raise money for Kennett Area Community Service (KACS). To raise money, Evie (9) finger knitted rugs and sold them. Abby, Tyler, and Sawyer (8, 6 & 5) made cards and letters for residents of a nursing home. In addition, the family has been supporting several other key organizations including La Comunidad Hispana and Family Promise of Southern Chester County to help them meet the new needs caused by COVID-19.
Unite for HER, a local non-profit dedicated to serving women diagnosed with breast and ovarian cancers, recently held their first ever “at home” digital fundraiser, and they were incredibly moved to witness the outpouring of support from our community. The event, Bloom at HOME, featured models strutting in their living rooms with their families. AN UNEXPECTED GIFT
Andi Hall and Leah Dixon are part of the “Together for West Chester” Team at Project 938. The team decided to put into action a strategy for overcoming fear and anxiety—to extend themselves to one person each day in an extraordinary way (not over-the-top, just ordinary but extra). One thing they did was to write Mother’s Day cards to women residents at the Brandywine Nursing Home in West Chester. They believe that connecting with others through small expressions of love can ease our fears and focus our energy outward. Mike Windish, founder of West Chester based Windish Music & Productions, was inspired to donate a set of Yamaha drums to a Philadelphia-based drumline called Positive Movement Entertainment, after he came across them at the Christmas Village in Philly this past holiday. THE SHOW MUST GO ON Drama students from Ursuline Academy and Salesianum School in Wilmington, Delaware were set to perform three short plays by Alfred Hitchcock when the Covid pandemic hit. With their live performances canceled, the students decided to get creative. Each actor recorded their lines from home and then the student director edited and put together what became a 25-minute radio play for people to enjoy at home while quarantined. STUDENT LED SNACK DONATION Caroline Miller, a junior at Henderson High School, organized an effort to collect over 2,000 pre-packaged snacks from her friends and neighbors and donated them to essential workers at Chester County Hospital and Paoli Hospital. A F T E R -T H E - B E L L is a free after school program for all students at Kennett Middle School. They have over 150 volunteers every year, including about 50 college and high school students that help with over 40 activities. Volunteers do everything from helping with homework to riding a bus to one of our many offsite activities like the YMCA, Coverdale Farms, or Anchor Fitness. Volunteers can be a lead or they can assist a lead in activities as varied as cooking classes, tennis, soccer, arts and crafts, or board games, just to name a few. Volunteers are parents, grandparents, retired teachers, retired community members, high school students, and members of our community who love to help. First Resource Bank: It’s All About Relationships T H E PA S S I N G O F T H E C A R E S A C T O N M A R C H 2 7 t h opened the door for struggling small business owners to apply for much needed relief from the SBA in the form of a Paycheck Protection Program Loan. These potentially forgivable loans were designed to help small businesses stay afloat during the Coronavirus crisis, and most importantly, keep their staff on the payroll. Many small businesses reached out to their banks seeking this relief but a few things happened. First, not all banks offered these loans as they were not SBA lenders. Second, several big banks who offered these loans limited their assistance to only their existing loan customers. Despite being a long-time customer of these banks, if you didn’t have an existing loan relationship, they weren’t willing to help you. Lastly,

this loan program was entirely new, resulting in uncertainty and numerous questions as the SBA provided little guidance regarding the loan process. This left banks to determine what information might be required to apply, and small businesses scrambling to find a bank to help them. Several local businesses in need of this funding were stuck. Lacking a personal relationship with their bank, they didn’t know where to turn. Many of these businesses found themselves having to lay-off employees and fearing that their business might not make it. Fortunately, community banks really stepped up to the plate and saved the day. Anticipating the approval of the CARES Act, the team at First Resource Bank proactively called their business customers to let them know about this
opportunity. Wanting to help as many businesses as possible, they provided them with a list of information to begin collecting, ensuring that they were prepared to apply for a PPP loan as soon as the application process opened. Well before the introduction of the PPP loan, First Resource Bank developed a genuine partnership with countless business owners, always focused on one main goal—helping them succeed. One of these businesses is Blue Dog Printing & Design. The paths of owners Bill and Debi Friedmann and the Bank crossed well beyond the lobby of the local branch. BEFORE , DURING , AND AFTER C O V I D -19 , Act In Faith’s mission is to build a community that empowers the under-employed to stabilize their households and build toward self-sustainability. Why? Because ACT in Faith believes that as members of the community we are called to assist those whose needs lie beyond the scope of existing social services. By working together, they believe we build a stronger community. We count on each other.
In mid-March, we had to relocate, reinvent, and expand our operations to meet the increased needs and number of people counting on us. At the same time, our day-to-day village shrank by 75% as most volunteers had to stay home. But very quickly our village began to grow with monetary and in-kind donors, and new volunteers reaching out to help, many of them totally new to us. There’s not a day that I’m not taken aback, if not overwhelmed, by the magnitude of generosity. This horrible pandemic has rocked the globe to its core but, amidst the sadness, fear, and economic devastation, has emerged a new level of...as our windows state, Love and Hope.”
