BE FIT. LIVE WELL. as spring finally appears in sight, we’re excited to introduce
you to our inspirational health and wellness issue. In the pages to follow, we’re celebrating the successes and triumphs of our friends and neighbors, and sharing ways to embrace fitness with you and your family. Read about how John Manion has carried on the tradition of Brian’s Run—the annual race to raise funds for the disabled, or how native West Chester businesswoman Donna Markley preserved a building filled with history and transformed it into a popular locally owned gym with an eye towards helping the community. West Chester has become a town known for its active way of life, and at Fig® we celebrate this as one of the pillars of a great community. We love helping you discover the many faces and places that support your fitness goals and aspirations, as well as simply offering suggestions on where to enjoy an afternoon in the sun or an evening under the stars listening to music. With a high rating as a walkable town, it’s easy to get around and enjoy all that West Chester has to offer—whether on foot, on a bike, or gathering with friends for a classic picnic in the park. As the greening of many communities spreads across the nation, West Chester is ahead of the curve, thanks to volunteers preserving the parks, initiatives for a greener downtown, and forming a committee, such as BLUER, to keep the air healthy for everyone. So grab your running shoes, your bicycle, or just your zest for the great outdoors, and join in the fun of a blooming spring in the town you love.

HEALTHY LIVING
IN A
“I like many aspects of fitness in West Chester. I probably am the most passionate about my involvement in soccer. I am currently playing with a great group of guys a few days a week, and, of course, we usually go out for beers after our game! We also have our annual trip to another country to play. This year it will be Ireland!
CARING COMMUNITY
—Kevin Finn, Iron Hill Brewery
“I love doing yoga at Turks Head Yoga and Brandywine Yoga. They are both awesome studios. I also enjoy cycling and zumba at the West Chester YMCA, and hiking at Stroud Preserve. —Asha Yogini, OmBoy Yoga
“As an alternative to running, the West Chester biking options are the next best outdoor activity. No car required! In a matter of minutes, one can head out of the Borough on their bike and explore some of the most beautiful countryside and challenging hills that the Mid-Atlantic has to offer.” —Carol Quigley Frens & Frens, LLC Chair, West Chester Film Festival
west chester is a place
people want to be, whether they live, work, play, or visit here. As spring is about to bloom (at last!), what better time to celebrate being outdoors and relish the many opportunities to jump into the welcoming season of fitness? West Chester is a town on the move, filled with people seeking to live and breathe healthy lifestyles. The choices are plentiful, and on any given day, the streets and parks are filled with walkers, runners, cyclists, and local folks being active in more ways than one. With the spirit of many seeking to be involved in their community, West Chester thrives as a vibrant and sustainable town. Designated as one of the two most walkable towns in the state,* West Chester is
indeed a walker’s paradise. It’s also a running hub, with dedicated running enthusiasts of all levels gathering early in the morning to sprint up the East Biddle Street hill, and the very popular annual Brian’s Run, nearing its 40th year, happening every holiday season. If you want to join a local gym, the choices are plentiful. In this issue, we celebrate the owners of Mitch’s Gym, who strive to always give back to our community, hosting frequent blood drives, in addition to sponsoring free memberships for disabled individuals. But wait, there’s more. West Chester is becoming known as a green town, with community garden projects happening and local individuals participating on the BLUER committee—formed by West Chester’s Borough Council in 2006—helping our entire community to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Our town is fortunate to have beautifully maintained public parks, with Everhart Park and Marshall Square Park both providing an abundance of nature, as well as live music events. If you’re looking for fresh, local food, search no further than the corner of North Church and West Chestnut streets for the highly anticipated opening of the Saturday morning West Chester Growers Market. As the seasons change, take advantage of all that West Chester has to offer. Get moving, get involved, and let’s welcome in the sunshine and warmth to flourish to your fullest potential. *According to WalkScore.com, which measures the number of amenities that can be taken advantage of within walking distance.

AUTHENTIC When you meet Donna, you can tell what kind of woman she is—strong in her drive, positive in her demeanor, and altruistic in her nature.
Donna Markley, Owner, Mitch’s Market Street Gym
the strength in giving Mitch’s Market Street Gym stands strong as a testament to its former life as a 19th-century factory. Light pours in through 10,000 square feet of windows that line its historic walls. The gym hums with a new life, filled with energy and movement. Then there’s owner Donna Markley, whose spirit and enthusiasm somehow manage to outshine the gym’s bright atmosphere. Donna is a West Chester girl through and through. Formerly a Golden Ram, she studied business management, working part time in a local health club. Eventually part time turned full time, and Donna climbed the ladder until she was the woman in charge. Then in 1998, Donna and her partner, Joe Messner, broke ground on the reconstruction of what would become Mitch’s Market Street Gym. Now they’ve given an old shell new life with fresh flooring, modern equipment, and remodeled locker rooms. It’s true that exercise releases endorphins, causing feelings of joy.
10
But for Donna, that feeling of joy is even stronger when it comes from giving back. She tells us, “It’s really about becoming a fabric for the community, giving back to our members and to the external community.” And Donna does this often. When local steeplechase jockey Jake Chalfin was paralyzed in a fall in 2010, Donna immediately opened her doors to him. “We wanted to provide him with an opportunity to advance through his disability,” and that he did. To this day, Jake exercises three times a week with a membership sponsored by Mitch’s and a personal trainer sponsored by friends Margaret and Bob Duprey. Now Donna offers those who are mentally or physically challenged a free membership, so that they have a place to feel supported and a haven for growth. When you meet Donna, you can tell what kind of woman she is—strong in her drive, positive in her demeanor, and altruistic in her nature. Members pause between weights to share hello’s and how-are-you’s. It’s clear that she cares about the community, and in turn, the community cares about her.

“Brian’s Run is part of the fabric of this town.”
GIVING BACK
John Manion
running toward a sense of community Since 1978, West Chester runners have laced up their shoes and joined forces to support a very special cause: Brian’s Run. This annual race began as a one-time fundraiser for former Henderson High School football player Brian Bratcher, who suffered a severe spinal cord injury during a scrimmage. Brian’s community organized the run in support of the paralyzed teen to assist with medical expenses. In its first year, Brian’s Run raised more than $20,000. After 1979, Brian asked to have others benefit from the event. Now in its 37th year, Brian’s Run is the longest consecutively run race in the Philadelphia area, and continues to raise funds in support of the disabled. “The mission is to help anyone who has been paralyzed,” said event organizer John Manion. “Whatever we raise, we give away.” Last year’s run raised $10,000 for The One Fund, in support of survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing. John Manion began overseeing the event five years ago, when there was talk of ending the race due to funding challenges and lack of participation. He saw the value in continuing this local tradition and was instrumental in creating positive changes, such as adapting the former 10K course to a 5-mile loop that carries runners through West Chester. “The race is part of the fabric of this town,” said John, who referred to the new course as “in line with the legacy of Brian.” A runner himself, John is out at dawn each day with a group of committed West Chester locals who make strides while many of us are still making our coffee. “It’s a moment of peace, and I just love it,” said John of his running routine. “West Chester really has become a runner’s town.” For those interested in getting involved, John suggests reaching out to the Chester County Running Store, where owners Kevin Kelly and Scott Purcell foster a true sense of community. “I’ve never seen anything comparable to it,” said John of the West Chester running scene.

It’s a Weigh of Life Eating healthy food in moderation is often easier said than done. As part of the Healthy Living Programs at Chester County Hospital, we host a monthly discussion on healthy lifestyles. Each month, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist will lead a discussion in an interesting, timely, and immediately useful topic about food, eating, activity, and wellness. Weigh-ins are offered but optional.
One-on-One Nutrition Counseling Our one-on-one counseling sessions begin with a one-hour consultation during which time our dietitians will assess your dietary needs. We will work with you to create a realistic nutritional plan that takes into consideration both your physical goals and your lifestyle. Our dietitians will provide you with evidence-based guidelines, meaning that your nutritional plan will be based on solid, proven research—not fads or fashions. Supermarket Tour Looking for an off-site activity for your community group? Consider scheduling a supermarket tour with a registered dietitian from Chester County Hospital. Healthy eating starts with smart shopping. Tour the supermarket with a registered dietitian and learn how to interpret food labels and make healthy decisions about the maze of products available. Weight Matters We know how hard it is to eat well and exercise in today’s hectic world. Weight Matters, taught by a registered dietitian, offers realistic success strategies to meet the needs of busy people struggling with unwanted weight gain. The program focuses on helping you make proper food and activity choices and uses evidence-based success strategies to help not only with weight loss, but more importantly, weight maintenance, while improving overall health. Program format is fun and interactive and includes two body fat assessments, a manual, and a pedometer. Once upon a time, eyewear was a mere necessity. Thanks to Terry and Robert Layman’s Artistic Eyewear, those days are long gone.

ith an eye for “fitting the frame to the face and the face to the frame,” Artistic Eyewear’s knowledgeable staff will help find a look that “is all about who you are and who you want to be.”
Robert Layman
Artistic Eyewear has the feel of a gallery with bright, original art, while natural light and trendy music create an inviting shopping experience. “We fell in love with the West Chester community,” says owner Robert Layman. Artistic Eyewear provides a look and a price to fit the diversity of each individual who walks through their door. Their collection includes designer brands like Oliver Peoples and Paul Smith, Ray-Ban sunglasses, and an array of boutique eyewear from Europe. Robert credits his talented team, including Holly, Erica, and Tara, for their great care with clientele. Convenience is paramount, too, since Artistic Eyewear edges lenses onsite to expedite delivery, and patrons are invited to bring frames home to test their new look.

A well-established family business, Artistic Eyewear was founded by Robert’s mother, Terry, 25 years ago in Israel. Now celebrating the 11th anniversary of their Doylestown store, Artistic Eyewear has expanded into the heart of West Chester, and they couldn’t be happier to be there. The Layman family believes in giving back, and each year Artistic Eyewear collects outdated frames to supply to Haiti and South America. Expect to see community involvement from them as well: Robert has plans to participate in local events, and will soon hold exhibit space for artists. Robert’s fiancée, Holly, contributes her artistic vision with original art installations and specialty window design.

A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE Nestled in the heart of the Brandywine Valley, West Chester is a picturesque and historic community that has a small–town charm coupled with cosmopolitan flair. Considered one of the most walkable towns anywhere, residents find easy access to schools, shopping, services, and entertainment. The borough is rich with history, found in more than 4,200 structures located within the three historic districts. Richard Moe, former president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, remarked, “West Chester is a real, living, dynamic town that appreciates and capitalizes on its rich past, while keeping a watchful eye on the future.” West Chester Parks & Recreation manages a number of popular family events and kids camps, plus several downtown festivals each year.
“ West Chester has much to recommend it: excellent public schools, proximity to major highways, the beauty of the surrounding countryside, and, of course, a downtown that has become the jewel of the Brandywine Valley.” – barry rabin, author of Best Places to Live

Our produce department is considered a locavore’s dream, with an abundance of local and organic fruits and veggies. Our grocery department carries standard grocery products but specializes in providing hard-to-find ingredients, including local, non-GMO, gluten-free, vegan, and bulk products. Our Co–op Certified program provides an easy shopping experience for our members and customers. The products that bear the Co–op Certified stamp of approval are products that we stand behind, including local grass-fed beef, wild-caught fish, rBGH-free cheese, and more.
