IT’S MY FAVORITE time of year in Lancaster City. The temperature is cooling down, Harvest Breakfast at Lancaster Central Market is right around the corner, and creativity is flourishing as theaters kick off their fall seasons.
This year, for our annual Arts & Culture issue, we’ve included a special section on technology, which we believe goes hand in hand with art. Creativity comes alive in many forms, and Lancaster is home to established technology companies like Cargas and Viocity, as well as fresh new startups. And something we’ve learned in the making of this issue— our creative city is investing in the next generation of tech through education for students of all ages—from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and our city schools to STEM programs at Bright Side Opportunities Center and many more. All this intentionality gives Lancaster City a creative edge. So what does it mean to have a creative edge? We picked this phrase because it describes the ability or power to create. It means having originality of thought, inventiveness, and showing imagination. In our opinion, Lancaster is poised to be the home for
creative entrepreneurs with that edge— individuals who bring new ideas to the table, think differently, creatively solve problems, and collaborate on what’s next.
Speaking of what’s next, we also invite you to tap into your own creativity and get inspired by Lancaster’s art scene—the artists, galleries, and performing art venues. Hone your talents or enjoy a performance at one of the destinations found in our art section, or find art to collect from nationally celebrated artists. In appreciation of some of those local artists, we’ve partnered with collector Tom Russo for a tour of his art-filled offices. Tom tells the story of his artistic journey and introduces you to some of his favorite artists starting on page 37. One more surprise up our sleeves: Our cover can be viewed in Augmented Reality. It’s our own way of bringing art and technology together. Scan the QR code above to download the app and see the magic.
Let this issue of Fig be your guide to Lancaster City this fall as you find your own unique creative edge.
With enthusiasm,
Deborah BrandtFresh Face: TFB Catering
TFB HOSPITALITY HAS BEEN CREATING exquisite culinary experiences for private events through TFB Catering from their Rock Lititz location since 1980. After months of designing a brand new kitchen and office spaces, TFB Hospitality is officially moving their catering headquarters to King Street in Downtown Lancaster.
In addition to their catering division and Per Diem at Rock Lititz, TFB Hospitality— which is owned and operated by Joshua Funk—already has a presence in the heart of Lancaster through local favorites Annie Bailey’s and Conway Social Club.
This move for their professional catering team marks exciting new opportunities to expand their catering options and uphold their mission to provide a unique eating
and drinking experience that your guests will savor.
“We’re excited to dive into the downtown community and become more connected,” said Dakota Ridinger, Director of Catering and Events. “For example, Annie Bailey’s is not currently open for lunch during the week, but now we will be able to offer private events and lunches at the venue or through catering.”
During the pandemic, the company launched TFB Cares, a community nourishment program that delivers meals to local healthcare workers and community organizations. Dakota hopes the new location will open additional avenues for TFB to give back to Lancaster by expanding this programming and
working with local nonprofits on their fundraising galas and events.
The expansion will unify TFB’s powerhouse culinary teams and bolster collaboration between the various divisions that the Lancaster community already know and love. With capacity to assist with 100- to 1,000-person events, clients will be able to enjoy specialized tastings for weddings, social events, and corporate events at their new hub and book expanded bar services with the help of the talented bar staff at Conway Social Club and Annie Bailey’s.
Let TFB Catering create an incredible culinary experience for your next event. Visit tfbcatering.com to request info and place your order.

Art that Heals
WHEN TAMEKIA FIRST CAME TO WATER STREET MISSION, she didn’t expect to be taking an art class. Staring at a big blank canvas for the first time in her life, she felt a bit overwhelmed. But once she got started, Tamekia took to it.
“Before you know it, you got images on paper,” she smiles. Today she draws, colors, or even works on her art journal, multiple times a week.
For many guests, art classes help them get in touch with their creative side
while helping them grow and process everything they’re learning.
“I just like the fact that it just takes my mind off the whole day and frees it up and lets me be free,” Tamekia said.
Tamekia is proud to be on a journey of healing.
“I’m a new person,” she says. “I can honestly say that.”
Much of her change, she shared, comes from her art classes in Water Street’s new Santiago Social Hall.

Fresh Face: Busy Bodies Play Cafe
OVER THE COURSE of her career in day care centers, Denise Evans noticed a startling shift in how children play. Interactions that were once driven by imagination and creativity were slowly and steadily being replaced by screen time. She decided to use her concern as fuel for a new venture, Busy Bodies Play Cafe—an indoor playground where kids can satisfy their curiosity without a screen in sight.
With towering cedar playsets and climbing structures, a fully stocked play kitchen, Lego and train tables, and an ever-changing rotation of toys, Busy
Bodies is a place where children and their whimsical imaginations can run wild.
“The kids are ultimately the ones who decide what they want to do and what they want to play with,” Denise said.
From the toys available for children to a safe environment where caregivers can relax while their kids play, Denise and her husband, Roy, are intentional about cultivating an environment that sets the stage for visitors to have a meaningful experience.
Busy Bodies has facilitated play from their flagship location at the Rockvale Outlets
since March 2022, and now Busy Bodies is bringing their play-based learning philosophy to a second location at Ewell Plaza beside Lancaster Public Library.
The new location will offer the same elements at their Rockvale location, including monthly memberships, enrichment classes, and a space to host parties, and introduce even more hands-on elements and events for families in the Lancaster community.
Find memberships, day passes, and updates on the new location at busybodiesplaycafe.com.
LOCAL LEGENDS
A longtime supporter of the arts, Thomas A. Russo has been on a journey to create a local art-filled workspace at Gardner Russo & Quinn since 1989. With the walls of the investment firm serving as an architecturally-stunning backdrop, the space is a celebration of the richness of Lancaster’s art scene.
On the following four pages, we invite you to marvel at the diverse collection at Gardner Russo & Quinn as Tom shares the story of how it came to be and what these pieces mean to employees, clients, and the community at large.
Thank you to Tom Russo for sharing your passion for the arts through this special tribute.
AN ARTISTIC JOURNEY
HOW DELIGHTED I AM to share the steps taken over the past decades to create an art-inspired office for our business. I was assisted along this journey with early artwork collected by my partner, Gene Gardner, his wife Anne Gardner, and Diana Crumay, an accomplished artist herself. By the time
I first arrived at the firm, Anne and Gene had works by distinguished Lancaster artists David Brumbach, Michael Heberlein, Robert Bitts, and Robert Andriulli. Those early pieces contributed an art sensibility to our offices. I had the opportunity to install substantially more artwork in our 30,000-plus-square-foot
repurposed offices, occupying space that once was an umbrella factory and later a tobacco warehouse, located across from Musser Park. I chose to direct my collecting activities to fill the walls with art from our local community of artists. As I reflect on my artistic journey, I would like to share some memories.
ARTIST // Robert AndriulliLancaster has a history of acclaimed artists, who then gave confidence to subsequent generations of Lancastrians to express themselves artistically.
Lancaster-born Charles Demuth, for instance, cut a path through the art world well beyond Lancaster. Because of artists like Demuth, Lancaster received visits from his friends, most notably Edward Steichen, John Marin, and Georgia O’Keefe—just to name a few.
Our corporate headquarters of Gardner Russo & Quinn is blessed to have an abundance of walls on which local art can be displayed, given the height and scale of our workspace. Our building, with its 12-foot ceilings, allows us to express our artistic desires with very big art. Indeed, Robert Andriulli and Robert Bitts have provided 10-plus-foot expressions of landscape settings hung throughout our offices, either solely or through diptychs and triptychs.
Inspiration for my artistic ambitions arose from the example set by Thomas Cook and Karen Heinle, with the extraordinary collection of art by local artists they installed at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute. Tom and Karen delivered on their promise that art should shape environments where people spend their days and carry out their responsibilities.
Art, once installed, continues to shape our emotions and our well-being over time. Tom and Karen shared a view, as did we, that fine art softens the edges of places, especially those intentionally sterile in all other aspects for medical reasons. Their artwork celebrates Lancaster’s remarkable collection of past and active artists. At Gardner Russo & Quinn, we hope our environment not only provides a stimulating, aspirational environment in which our colleagues work, but also inspires our own creative thinking and interests.
Continued from page 39
I must also recognize that Lancaster has been blessed with extraordinary teachers— Robert Andriulli, Dorothy Frey (successor to Andriulli’s decades-long teaching at Millersville University), Lou Schellenberg, Fred Rodger, Heidi Leitzke, Susan Gottlieb, J.D. Wissler (who was an early supporter of Mount Gretna School of Art), Art Harrington, Freiman Stoltzfus, and more—who have trained successive generations of accomplished artists. In reference to the hundreds of students he worked with over the years, Andriulli once said he taught them “how to observe carefully” and he taught them “how to make choices” of what to include and what to leave out, lessons which also apply to many life choices beyond art.
Another observation suggests just how elusive and unpredictable the pursuit of art can be. Artists are constantly evolving. While chasing new perspectives characterizes art by so many, trying to force specific styles tends to fail as artists’ interests evolve. I am most impressed by how Andriulli aspired to teach his students not to be mimics, parroting his own style, but rather to be the best at their own style.
Artist Jeff Geib’s artwork has evolved over the years as he brought new expressions of long-standing subjects he captured. Geib specializes, for instance, in depicting tulips. The images, both studies found within his extraordinary Codex and finished depictions of tulips, are amongst his most iconic works over the years.
Given Geib’s artistic obsession of painting tulips and our firm’s value-oriented investment endeavors, we were delighted when Geib accepted my offer to have him paint two large-format murals in our dining and gathering space that featured his large images of tulips. The message behind the murals is to celebrate history’s lesson about the great tulip bulb crisis that beset and destroyed Dutch financial markets in the 1600s.
Lastly, our collected works involve the role health has played for many of our most collected artists. Surely, the journey of two of Lancaster’s most acclaimed artists, Charles Demuth and David Brumbach, could not really be understood without knowing of the challenges they faced emotionally and physically, which shaped their art. Many of our collected artists have experienced
health-related disruptions, which produced some of their most poignant work.
Lancaster remains blessed by a local, vibrant community that appreciates its own history of support for the arts, as well as the presence of artists today who promise a future of robust art. Like us, Lancaster’s patrons support local artists, with many collectors making it a habit to expand their collections through regular visits to First Friday gallery-sponsored gatherings.
As we have curated our collection, associates at Gardner Russo & Quinn are finding ways to add their own flair by sponsoring artistic challenges. One way is through internal campaigns for photography, which some of our associates find immense pleasure in capturing and sharing their images.
At the same time, I remain on the hunt to continue to fill our walls with added art. My wife Gina and I are delighted to have the chance to continue collecting Lancaster’s extraordinary local art fare and continue shaping the lives of those with whom we work and with whom we live.
In closing, I thank our colleagues, the Gardners, for sparking interest. In addition, I thank Lancaster’s artists—those that have gone before us, those who practice today, and those future artists who will carry on this tradition of filling our community with such wonderful and uplifting imagery.

DEBRA ‘DEBBIE’ DOWER IS BREATHING NEW LIFE into Lancaster’s longstanding yoga studio— Evolution Lancaster.
Debbie’s connection with Evolution Lancaster goes back to 2002 when founder Lisa Taylor hired her as the studio’s very first employee. In May 2023, 21 years after its founding, Debbie acquired the studio on Harrisburg Avenue and began rolling out fresh programming built on the legacy of the last two decades. By practicing alternative health solutions like acupuncture, massage therapy, and health coaching in addition to yoga classes, Debbie hopes to establish Evolution Lancaster as a holistic health and well-being hub.
“My true north, for as long as I can remember, has been to create a culture of well-being,” Debbie said. “This passion was shaped through the mentorship of Lisa. I am forever grateful for her guidance and support, especially through this transition.”
In its new iteration, Evolution Lancaster’s goal is to offer resources to alleviate pain and stress, ultimately paving the way to living a full and rich life anchored on the importance of well-being. With the expansion of its retail space, Debbie hopes to stock products that will help members integrate the healing that happens in the studio into their daily lives.
“That’s really what it comes down to—being able to support people and ultimately uncovering what their strengths are so they can live a great life,” she said.

In the Breath paintings, Lancaster artist Jerome Hershey references a period when he had difficulty breathing. Conceived through small ink drawings done at home while recuperating from open-heart surgery, this group of work incorporates allusions to the act of inhaling and exhaling. As in his Fields Series (2017-2021), these paintings also celebrate color and color relationships by layering brushstrokes on wood panels individually painted and then joined together. The result is a simple complexity that exemplifies Hershey’s ongoing quest for an optimistic image that is calming yet energizing, stimulating yet meditative.

Throughout her career, Karen has been inspired by both Rome and New York— the two cities she said most influenced her work. For a series of prints that paid homage to that influence, she captured photographs in each city over several years and transparently layered images over each other as a composite of time and space.

A Pennsylvania native, Karen Schory spent over 30 years living a dual life on the East Coast and the Midwest—one as an art and design professor and the other as a visual artist. Throughout her career, her prints were accepted into competitions across the country and her work was shown in prominent galleries in Philadelphia and Italy. After retiring from her time as an educator, she came permanently to the East Coast to Lancaster where she has continued to create, most recently in her home studio at Landis Place on King. REACH HIGH
A series brought to you by High Foundation that introduces you to business and nonprofit leaders who are thoughtfully innovating with a spirit of servant leadership.
Emily Landis is an innovative leader who encourages her community to search for the answers to life's big questions through STEM.
As Executive Director of The Lancaster Science Factory, Emily is passionate about developing the nonprofit as a regional leader in STEM education.
Emily studied Biological Anthropology as a Graduate Research Fellow with the National Science Foundation. Her training and research in STEM was highly interdisciplinary, drawing on computer science, kinesiology, biology, and anthropology.
Before taking her current role, Emily worked at the National Geographic Society, funding scientific field research for six years. While she enjoyed the global perspective and educational reach there, she was drawn to the community-based science center because she could translate science to the public and see the daily educational and emotional impact.
“When we talk to students at the Science Factory, a popular question right now is, 'How can I help solve climate change?'” she shared. “I think they're motivated to study STEM to solve the big problems.”
Founded in 2008, the Science Factory’s mission is to inspire curiosity, creativity, and confidence by fostering an inclusive environment for hands-on STEM exploration.
In the 10 years under Emily's leadership, the center has transformed, doubling the size of the exhibit hall, the annual attendance numbers, the number of staff, and the annual budget.
The center houses over 75 fun and educational STEM exhibits for pre-K to 8 th grade students, and recently added a Maker Space, Outdoor Courtyard, and iconic climber—the Sky Bridge. This year, they are on track to set a new attendance record of 60,000 visitors, making the Science Factory a thriving STEM destination.
"We want to inspire students of all ages to fall in love with learning and discover the world around them,” Emily said. “Once they have that curiosity, who knows how far they'll take it?"
Emily and her team are making a difference in our community by encouraging the next generation of STEM leaders to build bridges toward a better future.

JASON FISHER, H&S Industrial
Graduate of Fayette County Career & Technical Institute
“What I love about this work is getting to use a variety of skills, especially when I get to work on special projects. My advice to future artisans is to take your time and do it right the first time. You can always get knowledge off the veterans.”
NATE MCCLYMONT, H&S Industrial
Graduate of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology
“I enjoy learning about the different ways of making things, and it’s rewarding to make things that serve a purpose. My advice to future welders is to never stop learning.”
ARTISAN OF TOMORROW
EVAN MOORE, H&S Industrial
York County School of Technology
“It’s rewarding to know that your welds will actually get used in the everyday. I hope as I progress in my career that I’m always improving my craft and getting better while also getting my hands dirty.”
ARTISANS OF TODAY
JOE VARGA, Viocity Group
“The most rewarding part of my work is being able to share the insights I have gained over the years with newer and younger folks in our trades. My advice to them is to watch, listen, and ask lots of questions to veteran craftsman available at your disposal. Mistakes will be made along the way, but learn from them to better yourself in the future.”
KYLE
BAYLOR, RSR Electric
Graduate of Lancaster County Career & Technology Center
“The combination of using technical skills and craftsmanship drew me to this line of work. Every project and every day is unique. My advice is don’t be afraid to dive in and take on new challenges so you can enjoy everything this trade has to offer.”
ARTISAN OF TOMORROW

ARTISANS OF TODAY
JOSH SEITZER, Welding Instructor
Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology
“Welding is the secret ingredient to making fascinating and useful things. The freedom of crafting something is so satisfying to me, and it’s my passion and livelihood on top of being an instructor. What I tell my students is to pick a trajectory, and like an airplane on a flight path, you make adjustments as necessary and then stick the landing.”
ZACH LAUGHMAN, Keystruct Construction
Graduate of York County School of Technology
“Growing up, I always knew the pieces and parts of buildings don’t make themselves, and now the most rewarding thing for me is seeing the complete structure go from print to product. Each welder has their own technique, and you never stop learning.”
ARTISAN OF TOMORROW
ADAM HOWARD, Keystruct Construction
York County School of Technology
“I was drawn to the thought of building something that will last a lifetime. I hope to become one of the best builders and even build a home for my future family. This career is really going to make my dreams come true.”

THE ART OF COMMUNICATION
A KEY ELEMENT OF EDUCATION AT MCCASKEY
HIGH SCHOOL, the Media Studies and Communications Program has been teaching students how to be good communicators since the 90s. As technology has evolved, so has the program, which now boasts classes on critical channels like social media as well as a daily live streamed show.
Natalie Nolt, a Media Studies & Communications Teacher, has been a part of the program for 10 years when the school recruited teachers to help bring new life to the elective program for the digital age. By providing real life communication experiences and fostering community
partnerships, her and her fellow teachers are investing in the next generation of storytellers.
After the pandemic, a partnership began with WGAL which includes field trips, broadcast competitions, and shadowing media professionals. Around that time, students also took over the McCaskey social media channels under the guidance of their teachers, creating content to showcase all the classes and programs offered at the school.
“These students have found their place and found their why in the program,” Nolt shared. “Now their job is to showcase
TECHNICALLY SPEAKING
all these places where other kids can find their place. They are both journalists and McCaskey ambassadors.”
More than 100 students are part of the growing program this year, shooting on industry level cameras, editing with premier software, and getting professional-level experience with audio and visual.
“Every kid comes a little differently to the program. Some have gone on to pursue a career in communications, and all of them leave with the knowledge of how to collaborate with a team and unleash their potential,” Nolt said.
INSPIRED IDEAS
“I see myself teaching how to work with technology, not necessarily teaching technology. The technology is always changing. Our students are learning how to troubleshoot, problem solve on what pieces they need, and understand how to be a leader. The next generation is already naturally collaborative, advocating for themselves and networking as storytellers.”
COMMUNICATION IS KEY
Good communication is a lifelong skill for building trust within relationships. The Mortgage Craft team and Alex Whitt of Keller Williams Elite have seen that firsthand as they foster trust with their clients, and that’s why they are proud to highlight the valuable lessons happening within the McCaskey High School Media Studies and Communications Program.
“Education has been my top priority, and it’s essential to recognize the excellent work of these educators in shaping the next generation of communicators. As real estate professionals, we strive to prioritize education and communication in our daily practices.” – Ralph Means, Broker, Mortgage Craft

H Marie DePaul, 7 years at Armstrong World IndustriesIndustrial Designer for New Product Development
“We use creativity to solve problems—considering the needs of installers and building maintenance professionals as well as the needs of the end user of a space while ensuring a product design is beautiful in the end. My work ensures our products are not only beautiful in a space, but also provide the best acoustics, are sustainable, and have the highest safety standards.”
H Cindy O’Neill, 13 years at Armstrong World Industries Marketing Communications Manager
“Creativity is a mindset that sparks ideas, encourages thought-provoking questions, evokes emotion, and can uniquely solve problems through design and process. The work I do is multi-faceted: both inspirational and informational, using striking imagery and visual composition coupled with informative messaging supports our brand and initiatives for commercial spaces.”
H Bill Frantz, 34 years at Armstrong World Industries Senior Principal Scientist and Mechanical Engineer
“Creativity is about understanding problems and matching them up with solutions that make a difference for clients and the company. It’s about analogy. It’s about playfulness. It’s about a trusting exchange of thoughts between people and seeing possibilities from different perspectives. With this in mind, I pay attention to client problems, trends, evolving technologies, and company strategy so I can provide strategic options for the business 3 to 10 years out in the future.”
H Ella Hazard, 2 years at Armstrong World Industries Managing Director of Arktura Ventures
“I believe that creativity is choosing the right problems to solve, staying curious a little bit longer, and asking the right questions to see something in a new way. In my role, I work to see around corners and into the future of the materials, products, technologies, and processes that will define the spaces we occupy. I wake up excited every day to explore the future of the built environment!”

We love it here!
“We love it here!” is a special series spotlighting Garden Spot Village residents and their love for Lancaster City and County.
WILBUR AND BERT HORNING have been valuable members of the Lancaster County community for over 45 years. Most notably, Wilbur served as mayor of New Holland for 16 years, and the couple spent much of their time serving in various roles for volunteer organizations. Now, they are active members of clubs and service opportunities as residents at Garden Spot Village, a licensed, non-profit, faith-based continuing care retirement community.
Garden Spot Village
“We love it here”
The couple’s favorite part of living at Garden Spot is the integration of local activities they love with the residential community at the retirement community.
“I’m very involved in the local Historical Society so I wanted to stay in this area,” Wilbur explained. “There are so many volunteer opportunities here at Garden Spot, and there’s an organization for almost any interest that you could have.” Their current interests include gardening, learning new technology through a computer club, and taking a balance class at the fitness center.
Bert can give a firsthand account of the unique difference between their home and other communities.
“I did a lot of volunteering through my church, visiting people living in other retirement communities,” Bert said. “I saw a lot of places, and nothing compares to the vitality we have here. It’s a very friendly place.”
The couple is looking forward to continuing to enjoy activities and serving their community together at Garden Spot Village.
“I saw a lot of places, and nothing compares to the vitality we have here. It’s a very friendly place.”
