ISSEI NOODLE BEGAN in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 2007, but its roots are inspired by the cuisines that founders Robert and Naomi Pham enjoyed while traveling across Southeast Asia.

“They essentially brought Central Pennsylvania a little taste of their travels because they couldn’t find some of these flavors 16 years ago,” shared Andre Pham, who brought his parents’ restaurant to Lancaster when he and his wife Donna opened its second location in 2013.

Andre fondly remembers cooking in his parents’ restaurant growing up, but he admits he never expected that so many years later he and Donna would expand Issei Noodle’s legacy by

moving the Lancaster location from its original home on North Queen Street to a brand new space that includes two dining areas and bar seating.

“It is another huge milestone for us,” Donna said. “For the first time ever through this whole journey, we were able to design the space just how we wanted. It kind of feels like going from your first apartment to your first home.”

Located on West Orange Street, Issei Noodle’s next chapter will elevate the ramen dishes Lancaster has grown to love over the past decade with handcrafted noodles prepared by Andre and served fresh to each table daily.

Andre and Donna are also thrilled to introduce Lancaster’s first “Korean” barbecue, Culture—a dining experience meant to be savored alongside a variety of Asian-inspired barbecue, where slow-grilled meats are cooked at the guests’ table and a selection of cocktails that complement the flavors of Southeast Asian cuisine.

“Our Lancaster customers trusted us enough to keep our business going for 10 years,” Donna said. “We’re so stoked to introduce them to Issei 2.0.”

Fresh Face: The Rendezvous Pizzeria & Steak Shop

WITH A NAME MEANING

“gathering place” in French, The Rendezvous—in its original form—was an institution in Lancaster City for nearly 70 years. Founded by the Gaspari brothers, it brought the Philly cheesesteak west to King Street and opened its doors to residents and visitors alike with a laidback atmosphere and classic recipes. When Roger Gaspari retired in 2019, it was truly the end of an era—or so he thought.

Two years later, when the timing was right, Ed Kaminski brought an adolescent dream of taking over the family business from his Uncle Roger to life and set out to reopen a new iteration of The Rendezvous right next door to the restaurant’s original location.

With his son Riley—a rising talent in the culinary industry—at the forefront of these plans and his daughter Zoe coming along to oversee the business financials, The Rendezvous officially opened at 243 West King Street in December 2023, bringing back the original cheesesteak recipe along with other traditional favorites and a new robust menu of Neapolitan-style wood-fired pizzas inspired by Riley’s culinary training in Florence, Italy.

“This is still a small family business but under the next generation,” Zoe shared. “Riley brings new energy to the kitchen, and we’re excited to combine our family’s story with our love of food and this community.”

Patrons to The Rendezvous will be delighted by the elevated ingredients sourced from Mandros and other local vendors in the BYOB fast-casual, open kitchen space, and find that the welcoming atmosphere of this gathering place remains.

“My passion beyond serving people is helping them be in touch with where their food comes from, so I’m proud of the way we have sourced our ingredients and designed our menu,” Riley said.

Fresh Face: Vine Bar

AS A CHILD, Justina Latura remembers her family valuing how the food they ate was produced and where it came from. With this awareness engrained in her, Justina pursued a career in healthcare, first as a nurse in the emergency room and clinical herbalist, then eventually helping to develop wellness programming at Lemon Street Market. There, Justina discovered the world of natural wine—a drink that is made without pesticides or additives. Reminiscent of the intention that defined her childhood, she was captivated.

Justina’s partner, Craig, is Italian, and has relatives who still live in Italy. Drawing on these family connections, Justina and Craig traveled to the country, exploring vineyards, tasting wine, building

relationships with winemakers, and began to dream of what opening a natural wine bar back in Lancaster could look like.

Vine Bar—which opened in October 2023—is the result of those dreams paired with the valuable relationships they formed with the winemakers from whom they now stock their shelves.

“The business relationships we’ve formed happen over eating together, drinking together, walking through the vineyards, sharing stories, talking about our lives, and getting to know each other,” Justina said. “It’s almost as if we have opened an extension of their wineries in Italy. We really try our best to tell their stories.”

Lancaster in the Spotlight

LOCATED JUST OUTSIDE the city, Lancaster Country Club (LCC) has been a destination for families and golfers since 1900. Following the success of the 2015 U.S. Women’s Open—Lancaster’s first major professional championship— LCC is once again putting Lancaster in the spotlight with the return of the Women’s Open this May, bringing thousands into the community to experience what Lancaster has to offer.

In this special section of Fig, take a look back at LCC’s 120+ year history, how the record-breaking 2015 event paved the way for more community impact, and what you can expect from the 2024 Women’s Open event.

More Than a Century

in the Making

Through a world-class course design, thoughtful upgrades over a century in the making, and a continued commitment to community involvement, Lancaster Country Club is paving a path forward with the Lancaster community at the heart of their focus.

March 1900

During the industrial boom at the turn of the century, Lancaster looked to form a country club as a retreat from increasingly hectic lives.

April 1900

The club charter was officially signed. Qualifications for membership were any person over 16 with an initiation fee of $10 for singles or $25 for families. From the beginning, Lancaster Country Club was to be a family club.

May 1900

The Lancaster Country Club makes its temporary home on Juliet Avenue in Manheim Township with its first clubhouse and nine-hole golf course.

1913

As membership outgrew the Juliet Avenue property, the Board of Governors purchased 60 acres off New Holland Pike where the club has made its home for over 110 years.

1919

The Club invested in an additional nine golf holes and the revamp of some of the existing nine holes, contracting William Flynn who is now revered as one of the most influential golf architects of his time.

1920s–2000s

LCC continued creating the atmosphere and experience around golf—including the addition of a driving range, new facilities and other sports, purchasing golf carts, and building the nine-hole Highlands Course.

2015

The world took notice of Lancaster and golf at the Country Club when the most prestigious international women’s golf event came in July 2015. In Gee Chun of the Republic of Korea earned the title of champion.

2018

Inspired by the support she received from the Lancaster community, In Gee helped form the In Gee Chun Lancaster Country Club Educational Foundation.

2020

The LCC: A Defining Moment project broke ground in 2020. The expansion project brings forth the next generation of first-class amenities for families to accompany the championship golf course, creating an unparalleled membership experience.

The U.S. Women’s Open Championship is set to make its return to the Lancaster Country Club in May.

Championship Level Golf

IN AGREEING TO HOST the 2015 U.S. Women’s Open, LCC recognized the Club’s world-class golf course provided a unique platform for Lancaster County to gain worldwide attention. The event had a large-scale economic impact and garnered days and weeks of media coverage for the community.

“The most important and gratifying aspect of the Open was the way in which our community rallied to support the championship as sponsors, volunteers, and spectators,” shared Rory Connaughton, the Club’s Greens Chair. “People from all walks of life came together to set Women’s Open records for attendance, volunteers, and merchandise sales that have not been eclipsed in the nine years since. That only happens in a ‘can do’ place like Lancaster County.”

A Record-Breaking Event

135,000 spectators were hosted—the record for a Women’s Open.

80 percent of spectators came from within a 30-mile radius.

Within 30 days of the opening of volunteer registration, a record 2,500 people had registered and paid to volunteer with another 400 on the waitlist.

The Lancaster community will forever hold a special place in my heart. I’m excited to play the upcoming U.S. Women’s Open at LCC, and I’m looking forward to another successful year of fundraising for the In Gee Chun Lancaster Country Club Educational Foundation.”

AFTER IN GEE WON the U.S. Women’s Open in 2015, she not only received her LPGA Tour card—she also gained friends and a community in the U.S. who support her. Growing up, there were many people who helped In Gee reach her professional career goals, which is why she immediately started making contributions after her U.S. Women’s Open win to other Lancaster charitable endeavors. In Gee and the Foundation Board formed the In Gee Chun Lancaster Country Club Educational Foundation (a 501(c)(3) organization) with the specific goal of helping others achieve their educational goals— something that has always been of critical importance to her.

The mission of the Foundation is to make a lasting impact in the Lancaster community by providing scholarships to LCC caddies, employees, and their dependents seeking to achieve their educational goals. A World-Class Design

Setting the Course

BUILDING ON THE SUCCESS of the 2015

U.S. Women’s Open, LCC began working on a series of upgrades and expansions for the Club that would continue to elevate the champion-level golf experience and were instrumental in bringing the Women’s Open event back to Lancaster in 2024.

IN 1919, William Flynn was hired to remodel the existing nine-hole course at LCC and add another nine holes. At the time, Flynn was the golf course Superintendent at Merion Cricket Club (now Merion Golf Club). No one could have predicted then that Flynn would go on to become one of America’s greatest golf course architects or that his work at Lancaster would be considered among his best.

Following Lancaster, Flynn designed multiple major championship courses, including Shinnecock Hills, the Country Club (Brookline), and Cherry Hills while having a hand in the design evolution of American classics like Pine Valley and Merion. His relationship with Lancaster was unique. For 26 years until his death in 1945, Flynn returned to Lancaster to work on the course, eventually taking it across the Conestoga River in 1941.

LCC recognizes the distinct responsibility to preserve Flynn’s masterpiece, and no changes are made to the course without the expert advice of Lancaster County native and golf course architect Jim Nagle, who is a studied Flynn expert. In keeping with the community’s instinct to preserve its natural resources and historical sites, no work is performed on the course unless it is in keeping with Flynn’s original design or intent.

An Event for the Community

IN 2015, the USGA and LCC knew that a successful U.S. Women’s Open would require the support of the entire community. In recognition of Lancaster County’s tradition of community involvement, the USGA and LCC agreed that the Championship logo would not incorporate the Club’s logo. Instead, a Women’s Open hex sign was designed to ensure that the entire community was represented to spectators and television viewers alike. That tradition has been continued in 2024 with the use of a heraldic red rose of Lancaster. Originating in the 14 th century, the heraldic rose was originally associated with the English House of Lancaster. The rose is part of the seal of Lancaster City and other flags and emblems throughout our community.

Lancaster Country Club is Ready for the Return of the U.S. Women’s Open

NO STATE HAS HOSTED MORE USGA CHAMPIONSHIPS than Pennsylvania, with more scheduled over the next three decades.

Central Pennsylvania’s Lancaster Country Club is set to host its second U.S. Women’s Open Presented by Ally on May 30–June 2. The Club has already shown it has the chops to challenge the game’s best players. In 2015, record crowds flocked to the venue to witness In Gee Chun’s breakthrough victory by a stroke over Korean compatriot Amy Yang.

Just how good is Lancaster Country Club? Acclaimed modern designer Tom Doak put Lancaster on his list of the top 31 courses in his 1994 book, noting the layout possesses all the design features that made designer William Flynn such a great architect.

Course architecture website Golf Club Atlas called Flynn’s work “one of the best marriages of property with a master golf course architect.” Keep in mind, Lancaster is a traditional parkland course that meanders over gently rolling terrain and is dissected by the Conestoga River.

“I love this golf course,” said major champion Morgan Pressel after the 2015 event. “It tests every club in your bag. It tests your course management. It takes a lot to win a U.S. Open on a golf course like this.”

When players arrive on property, especially those who competed in 2015, they’ll notice several changes to the layout. The design duo of Jim Nagle and Ron Forse, who have spent more than 20 years renovating the Club, have uprooted more trees and done an extensive bunker restoration.

At 6,629 yards (par 70), the course will measure 146 yards longer than it did nine years ago. Seven of Lancaster’s 12 par 4s will measure 400-plus yards for the championship. But the shorter par 4s also won’t be pushovers. The 392-yard fifth hole is a sweeping dogleg left featuring an uphill tee shot. It’s also one of two holes without a single bunker, a rarity in today’s game.

“It’s a traditional style golf course and that’s what I love to see,” said two-time U.S. Women’s Open champion Karrie Webb. “We need to play on more courses like this one.”

Fresh Face: Evermore Events

GERTRUDIS AND REGGIE EASTERLING’S LOVE STORY

evolved quickly, with them getting married just six months after meeting. To avoid the financial burden planning a wedding can sometimes bring, the couple opted for a courthouse ceremony, followed by an intimate reception with their closest family and friends.

“One of the biggest things that helped our marriage was we didn’t have all the financial stressors that are often associated with more expensive weddings,” Gertrudis shared. “You don’t want to take that on early on.”

With 13 years of marriage behind them, Gertrudis and Reggie are launching an event space that honors the origins of their love story and seeks to give every couple the wedding of their dreams, regardless of budget constraints.

“There’s just not many places where you can have a good quality event at a reasonable price,” Reggie said. “That’s the space we’d like to fill in the event community.”

Reggie serves in law enforcement and Gertrudis worked as a school counselor for the School District of Lancaster before leaving her job to open Evermore Events. In both of their fields, Reggie and Gertrudis encountered people on some of their most challenging days. COMBINING THE POWER, joy, and beauty of music-making with immediate access to mental health counseling is what SWAN’s “Rising Stars” Program is all about.

What could be more helpful to children in crisis than to have a safe, loving place to go where they can powerfully express their emotions without a word, stimulate their minds by learning, and enjoy the physical benefits of playing instruments, singing, and dancing? While they relax and their emotions regulate, they also receive trauma management classes and have immediate access to mental health counselors who they know and trust. A unique aspect of this innovative model is that the students serve their community by performing their beautiful music for others!

A BIG PART of Emily Gisselle

Gonzalez’ life. Growing up in Puerto Rico, she was constantly in the kitchen with her family. Her grandma’s house is where everyone would gather, and those gatherings would always include lots and lots of food.

When it came to cooking, things didn’t change much for Emily after she moved to the United States at age 12. As an adult, she even took over for her grandma as the main host of family events.

In 2018, she took all of that experience and her love for cooking and channeled it into opening GEM’s Catering.

Her new business provided an array of food options to customers—from Puerto Rican fare to Dominican, Cuban, Asian, Jamaican, and just about anything else you can imagine.

“I’m limitless—I can do whatever a customer wants,” Emily said. “But when you dig in, it feels like grandma’s cooking. It’s love, without the word ‘love’ being said.”

GEM’s Catering has grown quickly and currently serves parties of up to 300 at more than 25 events a month. In November 2022, Emily also opened a storefront in Downtown Lancaster with take-out options to serve the greater community through food.

Her hopes are for continued growth for GEM’s Catering by opening a second kitchen and purchasing vans that will allow her to host even more and even larger events.

Ten Years

of positive impact for Lancaster City

MARSHALL SNIVELY, President of Lancaster City Alliance (LCA), and his team would like to celebrate a decade of milestones as they continue working to ensure Lancaster is a clean, safe, and vibrant City for all.

2013

James Street Improvement District and Lancaster Alliance merge to form the Lancaster City Alliance, and the first Lancaster City Restaurant Week is held.

2014–2015

LCA hosts the first VeloCity fundraising event while taking on management of the Building On Strength Plan and its goal of $1 billion in privately led investment by 2030.

2016–2017

LCA moves to the newly renovated 115 East King Street with community partners Lancaster Chamber, EDC of Lancaster County, and Leadership Lancaster. The organization’s first Economic Development Manager and Director of Communications are hired. The first Cultivate Lancaster is held, and LCA teams up with Lancaster Safety Coalition to strengthen this important community resource.

2018–2019

Entrepreneurship Coalition is established, bringing together 24 resource providers to elevate City entrepreneurs. LCA also helps to organize the planting of 250 street trees. The Façade Improvement Grant Program secures $200,000 and 20 sidewalk trash receptacles are adopted.

2020–2021

During the Pandemic Pivot, LCA helps to bring outdoor dining and financial support to local businesses while serving on Recovery Lancaster Action Teams. A Street Outreach Specialist position is added while LCA begins managing the CRIZ program. The first Spanish-speaking team member is added, and LCA plays a lead role in the development of the County Racial Equity Profile.

2022–2023

Over 100 façade improvements are completed, and the Building On Strength goal of $1 billion in privately led investment is surpassed. LCA also oversees the introduction of the CRIZ Small Business Financial Assistance Program. The Downtown Investment District expands, and in its ninth year, VeloCity hosts a sold-out crowd.

Their mission is to advance women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training.

Throughout its history, The Junior League of Lancaster has been attentive to the community’s needs, responding with well-crafted strategies for change. In 2021, the organization identified nutrition accessibility as a new focus area and initiated a comprehensive community program to enhance nutritional security in Lancaster. in an equitable and accessible manner. Through partnerships with community agencies, the league is actively working to bridge the gap between community needs and available resources.

Fresh Face: The Snack Stand

WHILE EYE-CATCHING

PACKAGING in a curated window display now catches the attention of passersby at 50 North Queen Street, the face behind the newly-opened Snack Stand is a familiar one to the Lancaster small business community.

Marcie Natale, who opened long-standing Lancaster businesses The PotteryWorks, The BeadWorks, and The Gem Den in 2003, 2004, and 2008 respectively, has always wanted to bring international snacks inspired by her travels to cities around the world back here to Lancaster. A chemist by trade, she initially made the career jump to entrepreneurship to bring community-based activities to Lancaster, and her fourth business is no different.

Although a new concept from her artistic ventures close by, The Snack Stand is designed to be just as experiential.

“I have always loved the snacks you find abroad—the logos, the colors, the flavors—and I’ve always thought, ‘Why don’t we have some of this here?’” she said. “This space opened up, and it just seemed like the right time.”

With a collection of goodies primarily from Europe and Asia, Marcie’s goal is to keep the shelves filled with an ever-changing selection of savory and sweet snacks from as many countries as possible so snackers can stop in and always find something new to try.

have already seen a burst of excitement in the community—from curious kids delighted by the shelves of bright colors to tourists wanting to try something new while visiting the city to international residents finding food that feels like home.

Sally has been the Wellness and Fitness Director at Bright Side since 2014 and was responsible for the complete renovation of the fitness center—now fully equipped stateof-the-art center that is open to everyone, with 500+ members of all fitness levels. They also have a few specialized fitness groups from a competitive powerlifting team, including bodybuilders of all ages, to their SilverSneakers members. Established in 2017 after the Diplomat Swim Team merged with the City Center YMCA, the Lancaster Lightning Swim Team offers a competitive swimming program for swimmers of all ages and abilities.

From their Pre-Team program for new swimmers as young as 6 years old to their Age Group programs for swimmers with some competitive experience to the Junior and Senior Team for experienced athletes with more experience, the Lightning has grown to include 152 swimmers who work to compete in local and regional YMCA and USA meets.

WHEN THE ZINKS took over RCW Athletic Club in 2020, they had a vision to build a social and inclusive community for tennis players of all levels. As pickleball burst onto the scene, it was a no-brainer for them to modify their courts to host the popular new sport too.

“Pickleball has just lent itself to our vision for the club because it’s such a social sport,” owner George Zink said.

As one of the only indoor facilities in the area with pickleball, the RCW team piloted their pickleball programming using their existing tennis courts over the last year and a half. They now have their sights on expanding their facility to include dedicated pickleball courts to host even more racquet sports lovers from across Lancaster and beyond.

DEFINING THE GAME

Located just outside of Lancaster, Spooky Nook Sports was sparked by an idea founder and owner Sam Beiler had when attending his daughter’s traveling volleyball tournaments. He noticed the gyms they traveled to often had no more than two or three courts so for a larger-scale tournament, they were traveling around to multiple locations, sometimes several times a day. He dreamed up a plan for a brand-new 10 court facility that prioritized the guest experience—and anyone who has been to The Nook’s 14-acre building knows the reality was a little bigger than Beiler’s original idea.

Since its 2013 opening, Spooky Nook Sports has grown to be the largest indoor sports complex in the United States with 800,000 square feet of world-class facilities for land sports, individual fitness training, corporate and social events, and national sporting events. Denyse Kling spent the first few decades of her career on the management and marketing side of the healthcare industry. AS SCHREIBER CENTER FOR PEDIATRIC DEVELOPMENT has grown to serve over 4,000 infants, children, and adolescents with disabilities, developmental delays, and acquired injuries each year, they outgrew their facility. That’s why they launched the Where HEROES Are Made campaign to renovate and expand their space to support their world-class therapy programs. Their three-story addition brought all of their services under one roof—where miracles happen and heroes are made every day. As renovations continue, they are also building the Kids’ Care Fund, a sustainable revenue stream designed to support Schreiber’s services now and into the future.

As Lancaster continues to be a top-rated place to retire, residents are finding their place as they continue enjoying the things they love to do.

WALT AND ZOE BILSKI are Pennsylvania natives who found their way to Lancaster 35 years ago. Walt, a former electrical engineer, and Zoe, a retired nurse, both worked in nearby Chester County but built their life outside of work here in Lancaster.

“When we thought about retirement, we knew we wanted to stay in this community,” Walt said.

When friends hosted the Bilskis at Garden Spot Village, they convinced them to join the waiting list—although Walt admits it didn’t take much since they fell in love with the community as soon as they walked through the doors.

Zoe added, “It really has everything you could want. There is a lot going on as far as activities go, and they are varied, especially if you have a younger attitude and are geared to being active like we consider ourselves to be.”

Another reason they’re excited to make the move to Garden Spot is because of its proximity to Lancaster City, where they love to spend the day.

“One of my favorite things is meeting people in the community who say, ‘I love my doctor; I love Union Community Care,’” Alisa shared. “I can’t go anywhere wearing the logo without someone stopping me to tell me how the service we’ve done has impacted them in a positive way.”

The healthcare leader has a deep and personal connection to her work. Alisa recalls her early encounters with health clinics growing up, waiting in line with her family before dawn to hopefully secure a spot to receive care. This experience of the indignity that working-class and low-income individuals often face in accessing healthcare fueled Alisa’s passion for working with health centers and addressing inequalities in the healthcare system.

“You want to know what drives me forward? Equity and healthcare. Making healthcare fairer is my North Star. It is my life’s goal and what I will continue to work towards,” she said.

When Alisa set out on a journey to become an effective leader, she pursued leadership classes and sought advice from experienced leaders who generously shared their insights.

Over time, she developed her leadership voice and style—believing leadership is primarily about serving others. She appreciates the dedication and passion her team brings to their work, describing them as unapologetically fierce characters committed to providing high-quality care for everyone.

“Even though I appreciate the opportunity to be highlighted as an individual, great leadership is only the result of fantastic teamwork,” she stressed. “Union Community Care is able to do great things for the community because of a phenomenal team. I’m privileged to serve alongside them.”
