THE VEG OUT ISSUE
HAVE YOU HEARD? Lancaster City is a food-lovers destination. We know because we’ve tasted and sipped our way through this year’s food and drink edition, and we’ve savored every moment. We’re calling this the Veg Out issue—not just because I personally favor vegetable forward dishes, but because Lancaster is home to the very best farm fresh produce, and our restaurants know how to make it shine in dishes from around the world.
Want the scoop on iconic Lancaster famous bites? Check out Fig Taste Test on pages 15-17 where we’ll give you tasting notes to look forward to and where to try them for yourself.
For the main dish, we’ve brought back the second edition of our Lancaster City Restaurant Guide, courtesy of our partners: City of Lancaster, Discover Lancaster, Willow Valley Communities, OneSource, and Wegmans. Tear out this folding guide and keep it all year long, checking off the 150+ restaurants and cafes as you make your way through Lancaster City’s independent food scene. For those of
you who put vegetables first, look for the special veg friendly designation. Vegging out has many benefits, for your health and also for the environment. Along with the food features in this issue, we’re showcasing ways to bring wellness to your body and your community. We’re also showcasing nine (yes, nine!) new Lancaster City businesses. Thank you to our friends at Business Information Group (BIG) for helping us tell their stories.
In keeping with the mission of Fig, which is 18+ years strong, we strive to support a sustainable community that will thrive for generations to come. That’s why Fig is printed right here in Lancaster County on FSC-certified paper. It matters to Fig Industries’ B Corp status, and more importantly, it matters to us.
As you support the local businesses of Lancaster, raise a glass to the abundance our city serves up every day.
Cheers!

Fresh Face: Miesse Candies
GROWING UP, Ingrid Natale split her time between the U.S. and Sweden, where her mother is from. During her time in Europe, she recalls indulging in ice cream and candy she describes as “next level,” and it wasn’t until she tried Miesse Candies that she found something to remind her of those childhood days and meet her high standards for confections.
When the opportunity arose for Ingrid to take over Miesse in 2022, she jumped at the chance to start a new career where she could add something special to people’s lives while carrying on the near-150-year legacy of this Lancaster small business. Committed to craftsmanship and quality, Ingrid and her team have
continued sweetening customers’ days with traditional recipes and innovative new treats while keeping the entrepreneurial spirit that Miesse was built on alive. With this in mind, Ingrid is excited to announce a new home for her business at 429 North Mulberry Street in Lancaster.
“This is a really big deal, and I am 100 out of 100 excited about our new space,” Ingrid shared. “We get to make this building exactly what we need it to be to produce the best product we’ve ever done—still using the traditional recipes and now with the ability to incorporate more classic processes like hand-stirring our molasses in a giant copper kettle.”
With the move, Ingrid plans on running smaller batches of candy so the freshness of the all-natural ingredients can really shine. She is also excited to introduce new products and experiences for customers—like creating your own chocolate bar—in the beautiful, historic space.
As Miesse continues to serve the next generation of sweet tooths, Ingrid is proud to be an example to her two young daughters and to continue serving the Lancaster community and making them smile.
Stay tuned for the grand opening of Miesse Candies on Mulberry Street later this summer.

A KITCHEN FOR every stage of life
For more than two decades, Henrietta Heisler Interiors, Inc. has created beautiful livable and workable spaces, designed with and for you.
Taking special considerations to each client’s needs, they can transform any room into one of function and style.
“WHEN WE APPROACHED designing this ADA compliant kitchen at 101NQ, we envisioned a user-friendly space that harmoniously accommodated the ability to age in place with an air of warmth and sophistication in this upscale city condominium.
For this kitchen, the goal was not just to meet accessibility requirements but to weave an inviting narrative of functionality and aesthetics into the space by lowering the island seating area to make it accessible and also ideal for
hosting up to six people at this lovely wood counter. It is a nice place to sit and talk as the chef-de-jour prepares a feast.
Beyond functionality, our design prioritized interesting surprises through the finishes we selected—the bold backsplash tile and decorative detail front. Clean lines and uncluttered surfaces help embody this modern aesthetic, and the neutral color palette enhanced the feeling of openness.”

A legacy of building the Lancaster community
IN 1914, PENN STONE opened its doors and made its first materials delivery in Lancaster City. Over a century later, the business is led by its third family of owners, John and Mara McGrann, and continues to help people create their Life Built Outdoors.
“Mara and I feel fortunate to continue Penn Stone’s legacy as a family-owned business that’s played an important role in the history of building the Lancaster community,” John said.
Barney & John McGrann
John and Mara took over as owners in 2009, growing Penn Stone from a masonry material supplier into a hardscaping design center and outdoor living showroom.
“I was born in Lancaster, raised my family here, and have seen the landscape of our community change over the decades,” John shared. “I love driving around the county and spotting all the homes and commercial buildings we’ve helped build. I like to think our team has played a small role in what makes our community a wonderful place to live.”

ADVENTURE BEGINS at Lancaster Public Library!
Celebrating their second summer in Ewell Plaza, the Lancaster Public Library offers everything from exciting programs and exhilarating reads to museum passes and fun activities. At the library, curiosity comes to life as connection and community grows, and you choose what to explore.
“
Throughout the years, our children have explored the world through a wide variety of books, they’ve grown with books that are bilingual, they’ve explored local museums with the museum passes, they’ve devoured cakes created with the borrowed cake pans, they’ve celebrated as they complete reading programs, they’ve giggled as they meet up with new friends at storytime, and they’ve become engaged citizens as they build authentic relationships with people in the library community who are all unique and special.”

Fresh Face: New School Montessori
NEW SCHOOL MONTESSORI is excited to announce the opening of its third location, nestled in the vibrant heart of Lancaster City. Located in a charming historic building on North Lime Street, the new campus will provide specialized Montessori education for children from six weeks old through kindergarten.
“ We ’ ve been looking for the perfect downtown location, ” shared Robyn Stearne, Head of School at New School Montessori. “ Expanding into the city meets the needs of working parents who are close by, making it easier for them to balance work and family life. ”
At New School Montessori, the focus is on nurturing each child ’ s unique potential through a rich variety of hands-on activities and an individualized learning journey. The curriculum is designed
to cultivate creativity, accountability, and responsibility, fostering an environment where students learn to collaborate and build community.
“ Our approach encourages children to engage deeply with their learning material, driven by their natural curiosity, ” Robyn explained. “ We aim for our students to see learning as an exploration, not merely absorption of facts. They are encouraged to pursue their interests passionately. ”
Montessori education, known for its emphasis on self-directed activity, hands-on learning, and collaborative play, underpins all programs at New School Montessori.
“ Regardless of which campus they attend, students can continue their education up to the eighth grade at our main
campus, ” Robyn added. “ New School Montessori is ideal for families seeking a personalized educational plan that encourages the students’ autonomy and accountability in their learning. ”

Fresh is Best
FOR DECADES WATER STREET
MISSION has received fresh produce donations from the community to help create healthy meal options for their guests. And beginning last year, they found a new way to get fresh food to those who stay with them—gardening right on campus. Small gardens popped up wherever there was a free patch of soil, sprouting tomatoes, peppers, spices, and more for the dining hall.
Kim Gormley, a Prep Cook at Water Street, helped spearhead the program, using her love of gardening to bless others.
“I just think it’s important that people have a healthy option whenever they come to the dining hall,” she says.
Kim ensures the salad bar is stocked at lunchtime so guests always have plenty of vegetable options no matter what is served that day.
Open spots to garden may be limited at Water Street’s downtown campus, but they always accept food and fresh produce donations on their campus. If you’d like to donate or host a donation drive this summer, visit wsm.org/donategoods to learn more!

Fresh Face: Denim Coffee
LONG BEFORE Matthew Ramsay founded Denim Coffee, he worked at a coffee shop at his alma mater. As a barista there and an avid coffee connoisseur, he became obsessed with the variability at the coffee shops he frequented.
“The recipe is 98.5 percent water and 1.5 percent extracted beans—that’s it. So I began to wonder how is it so good at some places and terrible at others? That question drove me mad and ultimately drove me to perfect my own,” Matthew shared.
With the goal of “making better coffee,” Denim Coffee was founded in 2011, adding Lancaster City as its sixth location which will open in summer 2024.
After spending significant time in Lancaster’s coffee shops, Matthew and his team look forward to joining the ranks of excellent cafes that are already established here.
“We’re excited to join an already vibrant coffee scene in Lancaster and add just a slightly different flavor to what’s going on,” he said.
The differentiation they bring to the table can be summed up by Denim’s signature single origins and blends, their in-house baked goods and breakfast sandwiches served all day, and most notably, their flash-chilled coffee.
“We make it at our headquarters in Chambersburg in kegs,” Matthew said.
“Out of the tap, we think it’s some of the best cold coffee we’ve ever had.”
by
by
Above all, Denim Coffee is focused on delivering consistent, high-quality coffee to each customer every time they visit.
“We’re focusing on the coffee, the quality—we know that’s what people want when they come to a coffee shop,” he said.

A WELL-KNOWN FACE behind the bar over the years, Kevin Oswald is celebrating an exciting addition to his impressive resume of hospitality experience— part-owner of The Pressroom.
Kevin, who first joined the team under Steinman’s ownership in 2015, came back on board as Bar Manager when O.N.E. Hospitality brought the Lancaster staple back post-pandemic in 2022. With his history in the building and with the brand, along with his knack for creating memorable drinks and moments with his patrons, he was promoted to Beverage Director in 2023, and in 2024, it was a natural next step for him to start this new chapter of ownership too.
“ The Pressroom very quickly became home for me.”
Kevin added, “I love the unique charm of such an old building, and I’ve had great fun with people over the years—a lot who I now consider good friends. Part-ownership had always been a goal of mine so I was super duper excited when they offered it to me. It’s very new and thrilling, with its own set of challenges, and I’m really looking forward to it.”

FOR CHEF JULIE ARMSTRONG, owning her own food business has been a lifelong dream. After gaining experience in the local restaurant scene, graduating from Lancaster County Career & Technology Center, and earning her Bachelor’s in Nutrition and Dietetics, she decided to take a risk and open Gourmet Julie’s Way in June 2020. What started out as a simple delivery service for her homemade meals has grown into a full-service catering company and food trailer that allows Julie to share her culinary creations at events, weddings, and pop-ups around Lancaster and beyond.
“I believe homemade is the best way, and in my case, it’s the only way I make food. Every dish I produce is scratch-made, right down to the condiments!” Julie shared.
Request a catering quote, inquire about renting her food trailer, or find the trailer at public events and pop-ups this summer.

Fresh Face: Cartel Brewing & Blending
BREWING SINCE 2008, Adam Chamberland has solidified his place in the local independent beer scene through his nano brewery Cartel Brewing & Blending. With their ever-growing offerings, Cartel opened the doors to a brand new location on Landis Avenue in Lancaster City in November 2023—ready to welcome beer lovers from near and far.
With the move, Cartel has tripled its square footage and doubled its useable production space. From Adam’s point of view, more space means more possibilities and is thrilled to open the space for folks to host private parties, networking events, and live music.
Led by co-chefs Tabitha Albrecht and Eli Brouse, Cartel’s new culinary team is serving up elevated bar bites like a pan-fried chicken cutlet sandwich topped with prosciutto, aged provolone, sauteed peppers, and onions or the irresistible portobello burger.
“This new space is giving us the ability to take multiple people who are passionate about different things and giving them a space to exist and do those things,” Adam said. “The old space was pretty much just beer. This place is beer and food and eventually music.”
When choosing the name for his craft beer brand, Adam researched the origins of the word cartel.
As an independent beer producer, he resonated with a definition he found: “Independent manufacturers aligned by common interests.”
“We are a community, we are aligned, we collaborate, we sell things for each other and with each other,” he explained. “I wanted to redefine and reclaim a word that is used so negatively.”
With this definition in mind, Cartel is bringing people together around a common interest in beer and pride in all Lancaster has to offer.

Fresh Face: Nahual Maya Restaurant
FOR VIELKA AND CESAR FLORES, owners of the newly-opened Nahual Maya Restaurant on Gallery Row, food has always been central to their lives. Both are originally from Central America— Cesar from Guatemala and Vielka from Panama—where much of their culture revolves around the cooking and conversations that happen in the kitchen.
Longtime residents of Lancaster, Cesar and Vielka built successful careers as a roofing business owner and in healthcare, respectively. After first opening a restaurant back in Guatemala in 2023, which Cesar’s family now runs, they began to dream about opening a restaurant here in Lancaster City.
“Every time we wanted to get Central American food, we’d go somewhere else to get it—there was nothing like that here,” Vielka said.
Cesar added, “I told Vielka, ‘Why not open another restaurant here in Lancaster so we can share our food with the community?’”
Vielka says the difference in the dishes served at Nahual Maya, whose menu features food from Guatemala, Panama, and El Salvador, is in the special spices and seasonings from each country.
“A lot of flavors come from ancient traditions,” she added. “It has a very solid Mayan background.”
The Floreses have been blown away by the positive response from the community, as people from all backgrounds have come in to try their food, and they have enjoyed educating people on their culture and guiding them on what to order.
A few of their signature items include pupusas and tostadas, as
well as fresh-made tortillas and daily pressed juices. They are excited to join such a vibrant international restaurant scene here in the city.
“It’s a really amazing place to be,” Vielka said. “To be a little bit of a smaller city, there’s just so many different cultures here, and we are thankful to share ours too.”

Fresh Face: Nikki’s Custard
NICOLE DANNEHL and her family moved to Lancaster after living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a place known to be the nation’s frozen custard capital. After moving, they craved the nostalgic flavors of their family’s favorite frozen treat. In 2023, after Nicole finished scoop school to perfect her technique, the Dannehls opened Nikki’s Custard on Oregon Pike. The business has truly become a family affair with Nicole’s daughter Avery working as store manager, daughter Gabrielle assisting with marketing, daughter-inlaw Katherine managing social media, and husband William working as CFO.
With a heart for bringing her love of custard to her community, Nicole is excited to put a modern and creative spin on a “mom & pop” frozen custard shop.
Her lineup of creamy rotating custard flavors and whimsical toppings make a trip to Nikki's Custard a true treat—and her commitment to inclusivity means people who are vegan, dairy intolerant, or gluten free can also enjoy by trying her specialty sorbet and dairy-free soft serve.
“I think that’s hard for people in this market, usually it’s dairy dominant, and because our family is 50 percent dairy lovers and 50 percent vegan, we really wanted to make sure that we connected with people in those categories,” Nicole said. “There is something in our shop for everybody.”
With everything they do, the team at Nikki’s Custard wants to bring people together, whether hosting a fundraiser for a local school or creating a beautiful
outdoor space where customers can enjoy their custard all summer long. In the same spirit, Nikki’s Custard sources ingredients from local businesses to stock toppings and scratch-made sauces, working with brands like Front Porch Baking Company, Braddy Boys Pretzels, and Christina Maser Company. Most recently, Nikki’s Custard is partnering with KelSas Sweet Box to create custard ice cream sandwiches, crafted from freshly baked cookies and Nikki’s signature custard.
“I’m all about a good quality product and staying true to where your roots are,” Nicole said.

Fresh Face: Samaritan Center
MORE THAN 35 YEARS AGO, the Samaritan Center of Lancaster County was formed, establishing an accredited counseling center that would make its services available to all individuals, regardless of their ability to pay.
As the nonprofit center grew over the decades, their core mission remained the same, and they set out to expand their offerings to include business consulting, church consulting, and TeenHope— a mental health screening offered in local schools.
Samaritan Center’s not-for-profit model makes services accessible to a wide variety of people, including those with PerformCare (Pennsylvania Medicaid)
which was recently added to their list of accepted insurances.
With a rising need for mental health services across generations, Samaritan Center set its sights on adding an additional location in 2024. It wasn’t long before they settled on Lancaster City. Located on North Market Street, their renovated space, which officially opened in April, now houses five counseling offices in the heart of the city.
“We believe in Lancaster and its wonderful culture,” shared Steven Schedler, MSW, LCSW, CAADC, CCS, Executive Director and Licensed Clinical Social Worker. “We are excited to be part of the community while being walkable for anyone living in the city. The space
is historic yet modern with natural light and beautiful views—it’s really a great spot for our clients to come.”
With more than 20 years of experience in human services, Steven joined the Samaritan Center team in 2020 to lead as Executive Director as well as invest in the next generation of counselors. His passion for helping rising counselors learn and grow is paving the way for a future of important access to mental health resources for the Lancaster community.
Join Samaritan Center on Friday, July 12 for an Open House from 12–4 pm for a chance to tour the new space and meet some of their therapists.

Bright ideas for unique learners
LANCASTER READING SOLUTIONS, LLC was created by Lauren Maffett, M.Ed and Rachel Moore, MD—two professional women who also happen to be the parents of dyslexic children. They experienced firsthand the challenges of finding a qualified tutor when your child is struggling in school. The model for LRS is simple: Hire and train the best tutors and then make them available and accessible to as many people as possible.
In 2019, they started their microSchool program, which offered homeschooling families the opportunity to access the full tutoring program and more at a greatly reduced cost. For the 2024/2025 school year, Lauren and Rachel are thrilled to launch microHighschool, which will offer structured, project-based learning in small groups for high school students who learn differently. Fulfilling all the requirements for graduation in Pennsylvania, the microHighschool will have a four- or five-year track, depending on what individual learners need.

Fresh Face: Ewell Talent
AS FOUNDER AND CEO of Ewell Talent, Rachel Ewell is using best practices in recruiting and knowledge she’s gleaned over the course of her 15-year career to help the Lancaster business community source top talent for the job opportunities they are looking to fill.
She founded Ewell Talent after seeing the need for a talent acquisition partner who is not only attuned to businesses’ needs, but also their aspirations. She believes it’s not just about hiring—it’s about advancing your talent strategy.
“There are a lot of businesses that struggle with attracting the right talent,” shared Rachel. “They get a high volume of resumes and applications, but it’s not
necessarily the talent that aligns with their business goals or their culture.”
Rachel grew up in Switzerland before coming to the U.S. for college. After living in many different cities and states around the country, she has called Lancaster home for the past seven years and can’t imagine herself or her business anywhere else.
“There’s really nothing quite like Lancaster in my opinion,” Rachel said. “The city and the county has this vibrancy that is continuing to gain momentum. I want to be able to contribute and be part of that while helping businesses grow and achieve their goals.”
Her philosophy when establishing Ewell Talent was to ensure both the talent expert and the organization could be nimble in the process. That means not operating from a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to talent acquisition, but instead developing a customized plan for each company and each job opening. Ewell Talent is all about tailoring to an organization’s unique needs, goals, and values, allowing them to build high-achieving teams.
Ewell Talent is on a mission to give hiring a personal touch. Learn more at ewelltalent.com.

Health & healing
AN AVID ROCK CLIMBER TURNED YOGA INSTRUCTOR for the past 30+ years, Ken Bell has always prioritized movement and wellness in his life. As an Exercise Physiologist and Exercise Scientist, his approach to yoga is grounded in the physical as well as pursuing healing. When he and his wife moved to Lancaster four years ago, his yoga practice transitioned from group classes to private sessions hosted at his in-home studio, which Ken enjoys most as he guides his clients one-on-one.
“Although I have a fitness background, my approach to yoga is not just from a fitness perspective,” Ken explained. “I see
yoga as a comprehensive physiological pursuit best practiced one-on-one. When teaching a private session, I start with asking, ‘Why are you here? What injuries do you have?’ And so forth and so on to get an overall perspective of their journey. As sessions go on, we dive deeply into other perspectives, addressing the heart and soul as well.”
Ken’s passion for yoga is rooted in his desire to help people live healthier lives—whether he is helping a client address a health concern like back pain or simply guiding a client through a meditation practice.
A vegan since he was 19 years old with a degree in plant-based nutrition from
Cornell University, he can also introduce nutrition in his program when clients request it.
Overall, Ken hopes he can inspire clients to pay it forward, even offering a program for yogis to take their practice to the next level and become certified yoga instructors through his nationally recognized Metta School of Yoga curriculum.
“Without yoga and meditation in our lives, we tend to live unconsciously and with little thought of the present moment or our mind, body, spirit connection,” he said. “I believe yoga can heal our emotional and physical body while settling the noise within our minds, both on and off the mat.”

For the last 100 years, the generosity, innovation, and commitment to our shared community established a culture of collective philanthropy that has shaped our community. Now, it’s our turn. We want to know what you care about and how you will be part of changing the next 100 years.
To mark this milestone anniversary, Fig and the Community Foundation are teaming up to highlight the dreams of members of the Lancaster community throughout the year.
On behalf of both the Community Foundation and Fig, we invite you to dream, invest, and work toward a thriving, inclusive, resilient future for all who call Lancaster County home today and tomorrow.

Managing
Fresh Face: Lupton Law
SINCE GRADUATING IN 2015 from Villanova University School of Law, Seth Lupton, Esq., has used his career to advocate for immigrant and refugee communities. Opening law offices in West Chester, Philadelphia, and Delaware, Seth was thrilled to find a space right in Lancaster City for his newest office on North Duke Street.
“I’m really happy to be able to put a flag down in Lancaster,” Seth said. “The community has been one of the warmest and most welcoming communities I’ve encountered.”
As Managing Attorney at Lupton Law, Seth and his team tackle complex litigation matters in immigration court,
work with people facing deportation or seeking asylum, help families obtain residency, and assist clients with other critical immigration services like obtaining a green card or working toward citizenship. Lupton Law also offers new client consultations completely free of charge, a practice that sets the firm apart.
Seth grew up in a small town in North Carolina that, much like Lancaster, was a refugee resettlement community. From a young age, Seth was exposed to the specific challenges his community faced. With a heart for service and a law degree under his belt, Seth wanted to find a way to use his skills to make a genuine difference in the lives of his clients.
“This is a field where I feel like you can really help people,” Seth said. “We’re seeing awful things every single day. It makes me happy to know at the end of the day, I was able to help this person and give them a better life, give them a chance to stay here without the fear of going back to a place that failed them.”

Created by family for families
IN 1994, CLAIR HOSTETTER HAD A VISION to build something he could pass down to the next generation, and in the basement of their home in Mount Joy, Clair and his wife Orpha started a building company that would be just that. Over 25 years later, Clair’s dream has become reality, as he and his son Brent now own and operate Brentwood Builders together along with a team of 14 talented employees.
Brentwood Builders has held fast to their core belief that home should be a haven. Because of their family-owned roots, they understand the value of coming home to a place where you can make memories. From their initial designs to the end result, their remodels and new homes are built to bring comfort and last a lifetime.
Brentwood Builders is excited to elevate their clients’ experience with the debut of their new design studio and pop-up shop, which opened in November 2023. Housed in the former Hingework Building they bought and remodeled, the studio is a space that inspires and eases the process of designing your dream home.
“The vision behind our design studio was to create a space that is both beautiful and approachable, and we love that it is located in a building that has evolved into a creative hub downtown,” shared Kate Hostetter.

ALLYSON GIBSON Executive Director of Lancaster Clean Water Partners

REACH HIGH
A series brought to you by High Foundation that introduces you to business and nonprofit leaders who are thoughtfully innovating with a spirit of servant leadership.
For Allyson Gibson, who grew up playing in the creeks of Lancaster County, the outdoors have played a pivotal role in her life for as long as she can remember. Perhaps one of the most formative of these outdoor experiences was in high school, when a teacher took her class out to the creeks to measure water quality as part of a course on freshwater ecology.
That class set her on a path, taking her to the University of Richmond to study Environmental Studies. Her and just five fellow undergraduates were the first alums of the University with that degree, and Allyson also completed a degree in Leadership Studies while there. An internship with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation turned into a full-time job shortly after graduation, where she worked on an island in the bay introducing students, administrators, and adult professionals to the fishing community on the island, which she found had a serendipitous tie to Lancaster.
“There were these amazing connections between that community and Lancaster County—from the entrepreneurial spirit to the use of natural resources. If you’re a waterman there, you depend on the healthy waters that come to you, and that in part depends on how we use the land here in Lancaster,” Allyson shared.
During her time with the Foundation, Allyson hosted events to take farmers from upstream areas down to the Chesapeake and waterman of the Chesapeake up to farming areas for cultural and conversation swaps.
“In my line of work, we talk a lot about the idea that everyone lives downstream from someone else,” she said.
A few years after relocating back to Lancaster in 2015, she was able to bring all of her passions together at Lancaster Clean Water Partners where she began as Coordinator before being promoted to Executive Director in 2022. In this position, she facilitates collaboration between a unique set of multi-sector partners in the County who are working to improve local water quality. The network’s shared vision of clean and clear water by 2040 is largely dependent on their mission to expand and accelerate each partner’s capacity to do clean water work while ensuring that work isn’t being duplicated.
“As the Executive Director, I lead a lot of efforts behind the scenes so everyone is able to do their very best,” she explained. “My approach is to make people feel like they are on the right path, that their work matters, and that their impact is big and important. The positive results of this work are something we’re going to see in a short amount of time.”

GOING TO THE DENTIST IS A FAMILY AFFAIR at Dr. Matthew D. Freedman’s dental practice. Offering comprehensive care for you and your entire family, Dr. Freedman and his friendly staff put your mind at ease and your best smile forward.
“After we moved to Lancaster, Dr. Freedman was a recommendation from our church, and all of his staff are really professional. They always work with our family size, and they even blocked off an entire day for us when they could so we all had our appointments on the same day. You don’t really find that sort of customer service anywhere.”
– Brad Higgins
“I love that my kids just feel so comfortable coming to Dr. Freedman. The staff is so welcoming and call them each by name. They actually get excited coming to their appointments—to get their teeth cleaned, to pet his office dog Zoey, and the prizes at the end don’t hurt either.”

Connecting Lancaster County
with the Susquehanna River Corridor
THE LANCASTER COUNTY SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY (LCSWMA) MISSION
Managing Waste as a Resource to Protect and Benefit Our Community
92
MOST LANCASTRIANS WOULD AGREE
the Susquehanna River is one of Lancaster County’s most valuable assets. Just minutes from Downtown Lancaster, the beautiful river corridor stretches and weaves along the western border of our county, offering a valuable natural resource as well as contributing to tourism, recreation, and the economic vitality of the region.
With facilities in Conoy and Manor Townships, the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) is active along the river corridor and engaged in commerce in and through several of the river towns.
From the wind turbines on LCSWMA’s Frey Farm Landfill property to the beautiful trails along the river’s edge in Marietta, Columbia, and Conoy Manor Township. LCSWMA has always supported community collaborations to protect and sustain the county’s natural resource.
Over the years, LCSWMA has worked with river town municipalities to help build major trail systems connecting the river towns to provide residents and visitors with endless recreational opportunities, including the Northwest River and Enola Low Grade trails. These assets are the catalyst for new restaurants, recreation rental companies, and other local startup businesses. LCSWMA’s Chestnut Grove Natural Area along the river hills has become a refuge for native wildlife, insects, plants, and nature-loving visitors. It’s no wonder LCSWMA and Lancaster County have been longtime supporters of the Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA).
“It’s our opportunity to give back to the river towns through a like-minded organization that is doing excellent work to promote and preserve the Susquehanna River corridor,” Bob Zorbaugh, CEO of LCSWMA and long-time SHNA Board member, said. “By obtaining National Heritage Area status, the SNHA is utilizing the area’s rich history to draw even more people to our beautiful river corridor.”
If you want to enjoy a different perspective of the river, take a trip on the Chief Uncas river discovery
tours and visit the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center. Both educational assets are supported by LCSWMA and reach thousands of people who are learning about the history of our region and the importance of preserving the river.
The Susquehanna National Heritage Area’s latest initiative is the Susquehanna Discovery Center at the Historic Mifflin House & Farm in York County. This will be an opportunity to preserve a historic site and landscape with important Underground Railroad and Civil War stories to tell while educating visitors about America’s 55 th National Heritage Area.
Creating synergies within Lancaster County and cultivating connections will help us generate new opportunities to utilize the Susquehanna River to bring communities together and to ensure our river corridor remains an ideal travel, recreation, and commerce destination.
Find more information about SNHA at susqnha.org.

The Future of Memory Care
WE’VE ALL BEEN TOUCHED by dementia and memory loss, so when Willow Valley Communities founded the Willow Valley Communities Charitable Foundation in 2017, the Foundation’s first project was to launch a capital campaign for a life-changing Memory Center that would serve the Lancaster community. The “This is Personal” campaign set out to raise $20 million
of philanthropic support for the construction of the Memory Center and the establishment of a permanent endowment, which will be used to offset operating expenses of the MemoryCenter and provide world-class education and support to Team Members, caregivers, and the community.
As the official groundbreaking of the Marlin and Doris Thomas Memory
Center took place in April of 2024, the Foundation and all who have been a part of this important work are eagerly anticipating its completion which will take place in early 2026.
Located on the Lakes Campus, the Memory Center will boast seven acres of secure space to tend to the mind, body, and spirit of Residents living with dementia and their caregivers.
104
The Memory Center will comprise of two primary components: The Commons building, often referred to as the Town Center, and Households, often referred to as the suburbs. Unlike traditional models, Residents who call the Memory Center home will be able to explore the secure campus as they please, exercising their autonomy and holding their dignity to the highest of standards.
With an emphasis on normalizing dementia and reducing stigma, the design and programming of the Memory Center will focus on creating a supportive and welcoming environment for all. Amenities will foster independence and encourage the highest level of functioning for those living with memory loss.
Design features to aid in wayfinding, technology, and other safeguards will ensure Memory Center Residents are safe and will not be able to leave the secure zone without a Team Member or family member. Naturally lit spaces will help to reset circadian rhythms and minimize confusion, and calming, communal areas will be inviting to friends and family as they spend quality time with their loved ones. Dedicated assessment, education, and Adult Day Centers will transform the way care is provided to those living with dementia.
The Memory Center will operate as a person-centered Assisted Living community with an above-average staffing ratio. Adapting the environment to promote clarity, integration, and sensory engagement will provide an unequivocal dimension of support with each component of this Center demonstrating the future of memory care.
Embrace the Journey Forward: foundation.willowvalleycommunities.org
“With advocacy and support, the conversation is changing. We are proud to be reducing the stigma and transforming the lives of those impacted by dementia.”
