We’re so glad you’re

Here

A note from Fig

I F YO U ’ R E R E A D I N G F I G, it means you love Lancaster City and the people and places that make it special. Those of us lucky enough to be locals, whether by birth or by choice, know there’s something intangible that draws people here. Those of you who are visiting, welcome. We hope you enjoy your stay and think about making Lancaster City your home too. Another warm welcome goes to spring! As we cast off our winter coats, the city is coming to life. So what’s new? We’re so glad you asked. We see a renaissance on the horizon. Just a few of the groundbreaking projects include: Southern Market Lancaster, an urban food hall where you can get menu items from around the world alongside really good cocktails; Landis Place, a new residential community on King Street; The Intel, the historic renovation of 8 West King Street; and, of course, the much-anticipated Mosaic—a high-rise, 55+ residential hub in the heart of the city. And not just the skyline is changing. Businesses and non-profits are making strides to connect and benefit the Lancaster community in nationally-recognized ways—most notably the unprecedented announcement by High

companies which you can read about on page 15. We could not be more excited about what this means for our community, and we thank Dale High for his continued commitment to Lancaster. In this issue, we’re showcasing many of the things that make Lancaster City a destination for small city living. The walkability. The food. The art and theatre. The nightlife. The rolling fields and fresh air just minutes away (and the list just keeps on growing!). We think this place is pretty special. So if you’re thinking of moving here and making it your favorite corner of the world too, we highly recommend it. For me, Lancaster City is the perfect mix of historic charm and hip city living. It was where we chose to raise our family, start a business, and build our lives. And we’re so glad we did. See you around town, Deb Brandt & the Fig Team Subscribe and give back! Fresh Face | Welcoming new businesses to Lancaster City

Owners Jamie Garland and Ashlee Ludwig with Medical Director Dr. Keyvani

Fresh Face: James Street Med Spa JAMIE GARLAND AND ASHLEE LU DW I G are using their passion for wellness and beauty to demystify skincare (and bust some beauty myths). After receiving national recognition for their work, the two women decided to open their own business, James Street MedSpa. “We’ve always had the same vision for a spa, and we were picturing the same style from day one,” Garland said. “We thought it was time to transition [from working together as estheticians and laser technicians] and take all the knowledge and experience we had to provide our services in the best way.” These experts use a high-tech skin analysis machine on all their new clients to get an accurate picture of the skin’s surface (and sub-surface). Then they discuss the client’s concerns before

educating clients about products and making recommendations for treatments. Their individualized approach to skincare takes the guesswork out of creating a regimen. “The biggest mistake people make is mixing products and layering things you shouldn’t be putting together,” Ludwig said. “They are learning from influencers but not choosing products that work for their specific skin type. Our clients stay with us because we explain why we recommend certain products for their skin.” The owners take the med in MedSpa very seriously. Dr. Nazafarine Keyvani is a board-certified surgeon specializing in robotic surgery and medical cosmetics. Every treatment with Dr. Keyvani requires a prior consultation to ensure the client receives the best care possible. Both Garland and Ludwig

go to skill trainings on the latest in beauty technology, and they are certified to train other estheticians in lasers. “When it comes to safety, we do everything by the book,” Garland said. James Street MedSpa has services for all skin types. Clients can receive precise surgical treatments from Dr. Keyvani and reiki energy work with one of the massage therapists as well as traditional facials, deep tissue massages, and microdermabrasion. The spa even has online consultations through platforms like Instagram. The owners like their selection of spa treatments to be just as diverse as their clients. “I’m not trying to sell you something,” Garland said. “We’re skin experts, and we help people feel and look their best.” Skin treatment veterans and newbies alike are welcome at James Street MedSpa.

Drive away hunger IT’S ALMOST SPRINGTIME, which means another Drive Away Hunger Golf Tournament is just around the corner. Getting to know local businesses has always been a key part of the day, but even more central is the purpose behind why they play. Drive Away Hunger has been a tradition of caring, giving, and supporting the most vulnerable in Lancaster County for the

last 25 years. Charitable local businesses join together to give back, and feed men, women, and children experiencing homelessness at Water Street Mission. It’s more than a nice break out of the office. It’s about turning local lives around.

A HIGHER PURPOSE

What if we could create a company that directly benefits the community?”

T

his is the question that led visionary business leader and philanthropist S. Dale High to embark on the journey that sparked an unprecedented announcement that will benefit Lancaster County for generations to come. As Dale High began to plan for the next chapter of High Industries, he envisioned a change in the structure of the company—an inspired model that continues the company’s legacy and work in the community. In a bold and unique move—the likes of which are rare in business ownership—Dale High and his family have transferred ownership of High Industries from the family to High Foundation, whose mission is to invest in the community. This closer bond between High Industries and High Foundation will transcend Dale High’s life and the family’s philanthropic giving. It will embolden the Foundation for greater collaboration, bringing new ideas to life, and supporting important initiatives for social, economic, and environmental impact.

This shift is a continuation of The High Philosophy of building trustworthy relationships and being innovative leaders that has been in place for three generations. It is a declaration that business for good is a way of doing business that is sustainable and will reward success by leaving a lasting legacy.

On the following pages, we will look back at the legacy of Dale High and the innovative work of High Foundation. Go to highfoundation.org to view the video about this extraordinary gift to the Lancaster community.

Bridge to

A HIGHER PURPOSE

Opportunity High Foundation’s mission is to improve the lives of people who live and work in Lancaster and other communities where High companies provide economic investment and employment. Their objective is to enact positive, systemic change that will last well beyond their lifetimes, supporting and championing projects which enable the dignity, diversity, equality, and inclusion of all people and generate beneficial social and environmental impact. The Foundation engages with those sharing a common interest in eliminating poverty and creating a

vibrant, thriving city.

About High Industries: From its humble start as a Depression era

We are on this earth for a purpose that is larger than our own interests. That purpose is to strive to make the world a better place... beginning in our community.”

Fresh Face | Welcoming new businesses to Lancaster City

Barry and Marsden in front of a wall they brought to life in gold and silver.

Fresh Face: Pride Painting T H E I D E A F O R P R I D E PA I N T I N G was born when co-owners and partners Barry and Marsden began dreaming about how they could be a creative force for good in the Lancaster community. With a combined nine years of professional painting experience under their belt, they put their dreams into action and took a bold step to open their business in October 2021.

Pride Painting specializes in a wide range of paint and repair services. From standard coats to creative installations, the pair knows that careful attention to detail is what makes a job stand out. With a willingness to tackle projects that push them out of their creative comfort zones, Barry and Marsden work closely with their clients to bring to life the vision they have for their space.

As a queer-owned company, Pride Painting seeks to be unapologetic in who they are. “We are an LGBTQ+ owned company, which is something that is not often seen or celebrated in the trades,” Marsden said. “We’ve been really appreciative of the support and excitement that we have gotten in the community so far.”

With a commitment to fostering a personal connection during each project, Pride Painting is striving to be more than just a business. That’s why Barry and Marsden have their hands in each step of the process, from providing an estimate all the way to painting the space. “We are looking for a wide range of clients and projects, [and] we are hoping 717.330.0647

to reach out to allies [who] want to support us, and especially fellow queer folks that would feel more comfortable knowing that contractors that are entering their home are safe in that sense,” Barry said. They understand that for any customer, it may be vulnerable to invite contractors into your home. That’s why Pride Painting wants you to know they are trusted, professional experts who are ready to help you realize your vision and transform your space. AFTER 55 YEARS IN THE EYE CARE BUSINESS and seven years of the most entertaining and creative pages to appear in Fig, Jim Albright is retiring and moving on to other theatrics. We thought that this goodbye scene, borrowed from the classic Sound of Music, was fitting. Although this is his last appearance in Fig, you can still find him periodically at Albright Opticians as it transfers into good hands. It all started with Jim showing up to his photoshoot in only a Speedo... Here at Fig, we will greatly miss Jim’s quarterly challenge to make readers laugh and to be more and more outrageous. Jim, thank you for the belly laughs and for allowing us to get creative with you on this journey. Your trust and friendship over the past seven years has been a tremendous gift.

I WAS HESITANT TO MOVE TO LANCASTER SIX YEARS AGO. My boyfriend and I met in college. He is from Lancaster and brought me back over a break. The first place he took me was Lancaster Central Market, and I immediately fell in love with this city. We have friends scattered all over the U.S., and they can’t wait to visit and plan their next adventure here in Lancaster. Now, I feel so fortunate to call Lancaster my home. How lucky are we to live in a city that’s safe, has a close community feel, and convenient to amazing locally owned restaurants, venues, markets, parks…you name it. Lancaster is such a hidden gem!” — Lauren B.

THE CITY AT T H A D D E U S S T E V E N S C O L L E G E O F T E C H N O LO G Y, we understand the value of a well-rounded college experience. While their time with us is brief by design, our students make a long-lasting impact on our community. Perhaps you’ve seen our chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) out and about? They are actively involved in a variety of community activities and service projects across Lancaster City. We asked Juliette Forry, a second-year Architectural Technology student and member of AIAS, why being active in the community is important. Her answer? “Because people are important. If students want to see change in the world, they must lead by example.” We’re proud of our students, and proud to call Lancaster City home.

Students helped clean up various parks across the city this fall.

Culture of Caring

WO O D S T R E A M C O R P O R AT I O N I S M O D E L I N G A B E T T E R WAY T O D O B U S I N E S S . While many companies who prospered in recent years have used their success to benefit their stakeholders, Woodstream Corporation is continuing to increase their community impact as the company grows. Corporate donations and sponsorships increase each year, and the company partnering with new non-profit organizations, including Aevidum (Suicide Prevention), African American Culture Alliance, Fulton Theatre, and Schreiber Pediatrics. They also named the Children’s Miracle Network their 84

non-profit partner for all Woodstream locations. For Woodstream’s CEO, Miguel Nistal, community involvement is essential for running a thriving organization. “Although many companies have suffered through COVID, some have prospered and should give more back to their communities. Giving back to the community financially and through service is not just important philanthropy; it also attracts people to join a company that values corporate giving. It’s important Lancaster County businesses invest in our communities and neighbors to increase equity and opportunities.”

In 2021, the workforce faced the beginning of what many are calling “the great resignation.” An organizational psychologist coined the phrase to explain the vast number of people who quit their jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic searching for more fulfilling work. COVID acted as a magnifying glass causing many to look at how and why they work. While many organizations struggle to muster employee engagement, Woodstream seems to have a crucial ingredient for success. “Employee volunteerism increases employee engagement, improves retention, and creates an opportunity for team bonding at service events,” says Pam Bauer, the Executive Assistant to CEO. Today’s employee doesn’t want to show up somewhere and collect a paycheck; they want to be a part of a company that contributes to the community in a meaningful way. The perks at Woodstream are every philanthropic worker’s dream. Employees are offered volunteer opportunities during working and non-working hours to earn “comp time” (essentially, workers receive PTO to give back to their community). Each of the team members can also offer suggestions for volunteer opportunities. This prioritization of service and the employee’s time is an intentional move to build a dedicated, compassionate team of workers. “I have ‘grown up’ with Woodstream over the last 28 years and experienced its evolution from a small, family-owned company to an international powerhouse in the lawn and garden and pest control arena,” says Sheri Rice, Senior Director of Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance at Woodstream. “In my latest role, as Senior Director of ESG, I’ve been able to marry the people and relationships with our focus on the community and world around us. Woodstream has been a staple of Lancaster County employment for over 100 years and has actively participated in the community.

Still, the last five years have brought an accelerated focus on our volunteerism and community involvement both through our leadership and our employees.” One of the employees responsible for connecting the company to non-profits is Erika Herold, Community Service Ambassador at Woodstream. “In Lancaster, so many corporations give back, and I think it’s because your soul benefits as the community benefits. And it gives the corporation a soul as well,” says Herold. “People want to work for a company that cares about the environment, cares about people, and cares about the community. Every year as our profits go up, and we increase our giving budget, we give our employees another opportunity to get involved.” The core team of people who organize these service opportunities are passionate about giving back, and their energy is infectious. Woodstream wants to be a leader in volunteerism in the city, and it’s exciting to think of how the work culture of caring can spread to other companies in the coming years. 29 EAST KING STREET

Lancaster Legacies: Bass Mechanical Inc.

From left to right: Gary Varney, LINK; Shelley Baum, Bass Mechanical; Joe Guarino, LINK; Tim Kershner, CPA, Walz Group

AL AND SHELLEY BAUM FOUNDED BASS M E C H A N I C A L I N C . I N 1 9 9 6 , starting from their home before moving to a location in Elizabethtown, PA. Bass’ vision was to provide turn-key solutions in paint-finishing systems for manufacturing facilities, and Al collaborated with several engineering companies across the USA. Over the years, Al grew three divisions to support this vision—mechanical, fabrication, and electrical. But when Al passed away in an accident in 2014, Shelley and her family had to suddenly determine how to move the company forward. The Baums’ son, Casey, had been working with his father for three years and found himself stepping up as CEO 88

after the accident, using the knowledge he learned from his dad to craft a strategic plan and invest in Bass Mechanical’s future. After several years of trying to rebuild, the family realized it was time to sell the business in 2020. LINK Business came highly recommended to Shelley by both her attorney and accountant. LINK knew the sale would be a complex one. They used their local relationships in the Lancaster County area to find two excited companies who were interested in buying parts of Bass Mechanical, taking extra care to find the best outcome for Shelley and her family as well.

Their hearts and souls are in these businesses so getting them to the right outcome at the end of it is extremely gratifying.” JOSEPH GUARINO, Principal, President, and CEO of LINK

“It’s not easy to divide one company, but the two buyers collaborated in a lot of ways,” Joseph Guarino, Principal, President, and CEO of LINK Business, said. With one company taking the steel fabrication side and the other purchasing their contracting divisions, Bass Mechanical officially closed last year. Spayd’s Industrial now owns and resides in the last Bass location in Elizabethtown, and the move to this prime location has enabled Spayd’s to expand its business. Al Baum inspecting newly purchased Band Saw, 2001

For Shelley, it was the partnership with LINK that made this difficult decision easier. “They were great to work with—very professional and fun even under the circumstances,” Shelley said. “They showed up 24/7 to help with the transition and made it as easy as they could. [Joe and Gary] were completely invested and had my best interest in mind.” Although Bass Mechanical no longer exists, the legacy of what Al and Shelley built is being carried forward in new ways through the buyers in the community. Shelley says she feels lighter and back on her feet—she even wanders over from time to time to say hello. Guarino says he is passionate about continuing to help businesses just like Bass Mechanical. “At the end of the day, we are helping business owners on a topic most of them don’t know a lot about,” he said. “Their hearts and souls are in these businesses so getting them to the right outcome at the end of it is extremely gratifying.” “Our job is to find that right fit for the next owner or owners so the legacy of the business can be carried forward, [along with] the right outcome for the seller as well,” he added.

Fig: Tell us the “why” behind your business. Who or what influenced you to be bold and take a chance?

Andrea: I am continuing the legacy that Jude Sharp and M. Sue Martin started in 1984 with Sharp Jewelers, focusing on inclusivity and offering custom future heirlooms and American-made jewelry and crafts.

Timbrel: My father’s boldness to leave everything he ever knew to start a new life in a new country was my inspiration to be bold and fearless—to follow my dreams. Growing up as a first generation South Asian, I quickly realized the beauty the eastern world (and beyond) had to offer and wanted to showcase the handcrafted community and sustainable fashion world. Providing fair wages to my design team and their families means I’m helping change the course of their futures for generations to come.

Elizabeth: Ever since I was little I loved reading, and I always dreamed about having my own bookstore. It was an idea I had living in the back of my mind until the pieces fell into place. With the help of my partner, Teddy, I realized I could live my dream today.

Fig: What is your secret superpower? Andrea: My super power is remembering customers’ names and their jewelry even if I haven’t seen them in years. Fig: How do you give back to the community and how does the community support you? Andrea: The Lancaster community has shown their support for our small handcrafted jewelry store for over 38 years. We wouldn’t be here without them, and we love our community back by focusing our giving to local and city nonprofits and charities.

Fig: What is your secret superpower? Elizabeth: My superpower is speed reading—I can read a 500 page book in one day. Last month I read 15 novels.

Fig: What’s something people may not know about you?

Fig: How do you give back to the community and how does the community support you?

Timbrel: My mother taught me how to sew my first pillow when I was 5, and my passion for design and fashion was born. In high school, my school counselor asked me to consider fashion design, but I was adamant to study pre-med...and the rest is a very long story.

Elizabeth: I give back to my community by offering a platform for local creators. We currently house five creators, four of them being women. And my community supports me by donating their books and telling their community about my business, so the word is always spreading.

With 32-foot ceilings and four large storefront windows, they knew their project was going to present unique challenges. After connecting with Armstrong , they began to plan how to improve the sound quality of their space without damaging the beauty of the interior. “Most of our wall space was unavailable, and we weren’t willing to hang anything from the ceiling because it would block the view of the 100-year-old original hammered tin ceiling,” said Tarves. “The Armstrong team was great about understanding how to match design with acoustics. The mosaictype greyscale tiles above the bar really changed the space. It made a big difference with the room’s sound and those panels gave the wall life!” Now Our Town Brewery is serving up a great atmosphere to go along with their delicious food and beer.

A 40,000-square-foot expansion opens this summer, followed by renovation and opening of LGH’s existing emergency department roughly 18 months later. When UPMC Pinnacle Lancaster closed in 2019, it placed additional demand on a department designed for 85,000 annual visits. By expanding to 95 beds, LGH will be able to treat up to 140,000 emergency cases annually. “The expansion and subsequent renovation will enhance our ability to provide optimal trauma and emergency care for our region, in a modern setting that will positively transform the patient experience,” John J. Herman, CEO of Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, said. As Lancaster County’s population grows, so too does the demand for access to quality health care. With the expansion, the healthcare system aims to enhance access to essential emergency care and enable patients to receive advanced medical treatment without leaving Lancaster County. In addition to stateof-the-art technology, the new and improved 95 bed emergency department will double the number of behavioral health

treatment rooms from five to 10, the number of trauma bays from two to four, and add 13 pediatric treatment rooms. These specialized treatment areas directly address the unique healthcare needs the department’s specialized clinical teams are providing for the community. Another exciting part of this project is a new expanded hospital kitchen and the renovation of the servery and dining area. The current space prepares and serves roughly 3,500 meals a day for employees, patients, and visitors. The expansion will modernize LGH’s comprehensive food-service operations, increasing the capacity for the number of meals served by 20%. The new servery and dining area, expected to open in April 2022, will combine a restaurant-style format with stations offering handcrafted healthy and locally sourced food for patients, visitors, and employees. “Hospitals nationwide are upgrading their dining offerings to emphasize healthful eating and wellness, as well as promote a sense of community through indoor and outdoor seating areas where patrons can relax, refresh, and rejuvenate,” stated Nick Del Valle, Director of Food Service & Catering. Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health is committed to making our region the healthiest community to live in. By expanding the services of the Emergency Department, Lancaster General Hospital will continue to meet our region’s current demand for trauma and emergency care and best advance the health and wellness needs of our community well into the future.

H The Emergency Department expansion, rendered here, is expected to open in summer 2022.

Journaled Gems V I S I T I N G L A N C A S T E R or looking for something to do in your own backyard? You’re in the right place. Lancaster City shines because it’s located in the heart of beautiful Lancaster County—a national destination for good food, rolling farmland, and family adventures. So get to know all the goodness right in your own community, grab a few friends, and make some memories. In collaboration with Discover Lancaster, we invited Timbrel, founder of the ethically-made fashion line CHYATEE, and her team—Vetzrel, Hanniel, and Aidan—to explore some Lancaster County gems and share why you should add each of them to your spring bucket list.

Barry’s Car Barn

content sponsor

fig content partner

CHYATEE

Take a trip down memory lane with an extensive collection of American muscle cars from the 50s, 60s, and 70s (and more!). Why we loved it: • WOW! The number of vehicles Barry has collected over the years is so impressive. Barry even went as far as to make the outside seem like an old school “filling station”—so cool! • Walking in is like a blast from the past, with so many fun colors and types of cars. Even if you don’t consider yourself a car person, Barry’s Car Barn will challenge that. Inspired, Hanniel is now on the lookout for a new (old school) whip. • The car and motorcycle restorations are immaculate, with details recorded for visitors to read and learn. It’s obvious this “museum” was a project of love just like CHYATEE is for our owner Timbrel Chyatee.

Bottle-feed a calf, milk a cow, feed the goats, gather eggs, press cider—these are just some of the farm tour experiences awaiting you. Why we loved it: • Farm owner, Jesse, was one of our favorite parts of this experience! He takes pride in the farm that has been in his family for many years and loves sharing with visitors. You are truly supporting a local business owner who has opened his home to teach others about his culture and the impact of farms on Lancaster County. • We loved being able to hold and feed the many animals on the farm—and did we mention that you get a watch a pig go down a slide? It’s a pretty pig moment. • Jesse even gave us free produce to take home, but only if we picked the produce ourselves. Hard work is very important to Amish culture, and Jesse gave us a glimpse of how working a successful farm takes a family, like our team. 104

Old Windmill Farm

The Old Country Store

Learn how to quilt from a professional and bring home your own work of art. Why we loved it: • Because our small business is focused on handmade products and clothing, it was fun to get the team behind a sewing machine and get a feel for the complexity of working with handmade quilts. • Our favorite was a colorful patchwork quilt that contained patches of houses with fun characters in the doorway of each house. Talk about the perfect quilt for a friendly game of Eye-Spy before bed. • It was great to experience Lancaster’s art of quilt making and see how it is still remembered and shared in our community— we hope the art of quilt making remains alive forever.

A boutique shopping experience new to downtown Manheim. Why we loved it: • This is a great chance to shop the many creatives, creators, and collectors here in Lancaster County—a mix of jewelry, antiques, clothing, and so much more.

Prussian Street Arcade

• The arcade is a very “Instagram-able” location with decor that makes you want to strike quick pose. Girls Day, anyone? • A fun addition to shopping here is listening to customers play the hand-painted piano, which was painted by a local artist. We even learned our very own Timbrel has been hiding her own piano playing skills—a pleasant surprise to our ears.

LancasterHistory

Learn more about Lancaster’s role in shaping Pennsylvania’s history as you connect with the past. Why we loved it: • This museum is constantly changing its exhibit to give insight on the long-standing history of Lancaster. During our visit, we learned about “Lancaster through the Sixties” from the 1660s to the 1960s. • As a female-owned business, we loved the exhibit’s highlight of elegant, patterned women’s fashion, similar to some pieces you may catch at our 101NQ location. • Some pretty cool concerts took place in F&M’s Mayser’s Gym—like an Elton John concert for $5. Some of Vetzrel’s favorite songs are by Elton John so if Elton decides to return to Lancaster, she’d be willing to pay a little more for the opportunity. 501 GREENFIELD ROAD
