“OUR MUSIC IS FUN, familiar, comforting, and social,” pipes Ginger, aka Dr. Mary Ellen Williams, lead vocalist for Ginger and the Schnappes.

The singer celebrates a passion for vintage style and song. And the tunes, “On Vue Faire Le Fête” and “Let’s Party,” lyrics by Mary Ellen and music by Joe, celebrates the spirit of Bourbon Street.

“Jazz music was created in New Orleans,” says Ginger, and today the genre includes a broad range of sound and styles. As for the Schnappes, a sextet of internationally noted musicians, their mixture of original music and selections akin to Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra keep fans coming back.

Eye of the Tiger Fig Authentic: Thanjhae Teasley THANJHAE “THE TIGER” T E A S L E Y, incidentally, floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee.

The Lehigh Valley native is climbing the ranks as a professional boxer. To see him in the ring is to truly witness something quite remarkable.

Before each match, his favorite Wu Tang Clan song blasts over the speakers, serenading him from behind the shadows and into the boxing ring. You can tell he is visualizing his win, taking in this moment—he doesn’t even blink.

At 23-years-old, the undefeated welterweight has focus, drive, and determination written all over his face.

Thanjhae has the face of a warrior.

He discovered his calling very early on—born out of a first-grade biography writing assignment.

“I picked Muhammad Ali. I loved what he stood for and how he carried himself both inside and outside the ring,” Thanjhae explained. “He never let anyone tell him what he couldn’t do. He defied the odds and manifested his dreams. I was inspired. I knew I wanted to be just like him.”

Thanjhae took to YouTube, studying masters like Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard,

Sugar Ray Robinson, Thomas Hearns, Jack LaMotta, and Marvin Hagler, to name a few. “I just loved the way they moved,” he added.

In elementary school, Thanjhae was bullied, and after he learned about the sport through his report, he asked his mother if she’d let him take boxing lessons. After some convincing, his mother finally agreed, and the rest is history.

Thanjhae has his sights set on victory, as he trains six days a week for seven hours a day. His diet isn’t like one of a normal twenty-something.

“Anyone who knows me knows I have a crazy sweet tooth, but I can’t have any of that while I’m training,” Thanjhae said.

“I can’t give up on myself. I’ve worked too hard to get where I’m going.”

Thanjhae’s laser focus is on what’s next, with goals of becoming a champion in several boxing weight divisions.

Eventually, he plans to transition to a career as a boxing commentator when his life in the ring comes to an end and start a family someday, but he knows boxing will always be his passion no matter what.

He is committed to accomplishing everything he sets out to do. After all, Thanjhae’s got the eye of The Tiger.

Giving Back: Seth Witcher AN UP AND COMING MUSIC A RT I S T, Seth Witcher may be young, but this self-proclaimed “old soul” brings to his music and his community a depth that belies his years. Witcher, whose music career officially launched in 2018, started early on, as a child playing piano, guitar, and singing with his church choir. You can catch Seth performing all over the Lehigh Valley and beyond.

He’ll be performing at Musikfest August 5-14 and releasing his next song “House of Gold” on June 24th.

While busy building his music career, Seth is dedicated to making his music work for his community as well. He’s performed for free at several venues including the Rock N’ Run event at Coca-Cola Park sponsored by the Salvation Army and the Kindness Project’s annual fundraiser held at Putt-U. For Seth, giving his time and talent in support of cause-related events comes easily. “I love to give back. If I’m asked and I’m available, I will do it.” And make no mistake, Seth is self-effacing about his service. “I don’t publicize this; it’s just what I do.”

When asked about the particular venues, both of which support foster care and adoption services, Seth explains, “There is no coincidence that these organizations support children.

I grew up with two parents at home, homeschooled for years, so I was blessed with extended family time.”

“It’s a great way to get our cats adopted. You get to see how the cats behave when they are free to roam. This way the cats sort of get to choose their owners, instead of the other way around,” says Kelly Bauer, Executive Director of The Center for Animal Health & Welfare (CAHW). The café emphasizes community education while providing more funding for CAHW, and both the café and thrift store provide funded community outreach programs. “We wanted a space that could truly involve the community in a way that is beyond just adoption,” she said.

For World Hunger Month W I N D C R E E K B E T H L E H E M partnered with a local organization to increase food accessibility across the Lehigh Valley.

Tasked with aiding underprivileged families in the area, the Hispanic Center Lehigh Valley (HCLV) provides social services and access to an in-house food pantry. Originally servicing around 800 families, the number spiked to over 3,000 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To ensure that HCLV was able to accommodate the increase, Wind Creek Bethlehem’s Facilities team rebuilt 15 food pantry shelves that were previously damaged during a flood. In conjunction with this effort, team members

at Wind Creek Bethlehem participated in the organization’s 14th annual food drive. A total of 530 boxes—filled with nonperishable food items— were collected and donated to HCLV.

Healthful food for all A D R E A M that was hatched in 2011 is getting closer to reality: the opening of a full service, ‘everyone welcome’ grocery store at 250 East Broad Street, owned and operated by the 1,100+ (and growing!) members of the Bethlehem Food Co-Op. Ground was broken in early May for the four-story, mixed use development that will house the co-op’s store on the ground floor. The store will be open

year-round and feature reasonably-priced, healthy, locally-sourced products.

Led by a volunteer board of nine and a host of committed members and community partners, the co-op has set its sights on opening in the spring of 2023.

In addition to finalizing the design, decor, and stocking of the store, volunteers are working on educational, environmental, and social justice initiatives while continuing to grow the membership.

“The first time I walked on the campus of Moravian College on January 3, 2018, I felt a sense of peace and a feeling that I found a new ‘home.’

It was my first day as an Adjunct Nursing Instructor at Moravian College. Some people would not understand why I would choose to use the word home when referring to a new job, but to me being a nurse for the past 21 years was never just ‘a job.’

To me being a nurse is so much more than that, it is a part of who I am.”

J O E L L E H A S B E E N an RN for over 20 years and graduated from Moravian in 2020 with an MSN Nurse Educator degree. Joelle started as an oncology nurse and then became a school nurse. For the past five years, she has been an adjunct instructor at Moravian and teaches a variety of clinical groups and a community health course to RN and BSN students, which she designed as an online course where students Zoom with Global Brigades.

She loves educating future nurses and partnering with organizations within the community. Joelle feels her job allows her to grow as a nurse, “I learn everyday from the organizations we partner with, my coworkers, and my students. I am happy to be a HOUND!”

M O L LY A LWAY S K N E W she wanted to pursue a career that allowed her to serve others and help them achieve their goals and dreams. After switching majors multiple times, she finally discovered the field of speech-language pathology. While pursuing her master’s degree at Moravian, Molly has had the opportunity to assist in developing research studies, present at a national conference, and co-author a research article for an international journal.

While Molly has a newfound enthusiasm for research, she’s always had a passion for working with children. She recently completed her final clinical placement at the Penn State Health Children’s Hospital where she primarily served the pediatric dysphagia population. This summer, Molly will be starting her Speech-Language Pathologist Clinical Fellowship Year at Grow & Tell in Carlisle, PA.

Jordan Stemple Master of Science in Occupational Therapy

B E F O R E C O M I N G T O M O R AV I A N , Jordan worked as a teacher where he experienced first-hand the huge impact that occupational therapy can have on individuals in all areas of healthcare. In his search for a school offering an Occupational Therapy program, Jordan was “really impressed by Moravian’s strong faculty and professors who are always so focused on student success and providing opportunities to work with a variety of individuals within the community.” He has been especially impressed by the program’s innovative offerings in emerging areas of practice in healthcare, such as 3D printing and driving simulators. Jordan is currently involved in a research project looking at the use of 3D printers to design and create assistive technology to improve access to technology for people with disabilities.

What a woman wants What was your breakthrough moment?

It was on a trip to Hess’s Department Store—my mother took me. As I walked through, I saw several women getting their nails and hair done. There was such great energy in the air. Everyone just looked so happy and beautiful! I was there to get my hair cut as well—I couldn’t have been more excited! Much like how I wear my hair today, back then my hair was very long. When I stood up from the salon chair, my hair had been cut to chin-length.

I was absolutely devastated. I vowed I would never make anyone feel that way.

“I knew I wanted to make people feel beautiful—always, and in all ways.”

I knew my calling at a very young age.

What is your greatest strength?

I have unparalleled determination and drive. I don’t give up. I’ve always known what I’ve wanted and I’ve worked hard to see my dreams become my reality.

Perseverance is my superpower.

What is the most important challenge women face today?

Having a seat at the table. We have taken great strides in authoritative roles throughout the years, but let’s face it, there’s still a long way to go. We have to change the narrative—women can be, and are, leaders. This needs to be instilled early on. Our daughters need to know they can do anything they set their minds to.

What is the greatest hurdle you’ve overcome?

Starting a business as a single mom you have to balance responsibilities both as a mother and an entrepreneur. It’s like having two full-time jobs. There are such high expectations—there’s constant sacrifice and juggling. But you just do it. I always thought, “What would I be missing out on if I didn’t go for it?

Would giving up really be worth it?”

I was extremely fortunate to have an incredible support system. My daughter was the first niece and grandchild, and my family was always there for me—that was vital to the growth of my business.

It doesn’t get easier—you just become more skilled at the balancing act.

What needs to change in the next 10 years?

As the owner of A-List Salon, I talk with women everyday. Women need to be recognized for the work they do.

We need to empower each other to break the archaic systems. There needs to be more acceptance and inclusion across the board. We need a foundational change in our societal structure. It’s vital for future generations to grow and thrive.

What advice would you give young women today?

“Don’t waste time and energy on things and people who do not believe in and support you.” Originally, my plan was to go into business with another person. I realized quickly that depending on someone else to get my business started wasn’t the right move for me.

I had all of the tools I needed to get where I wanted to go, I just had to take the leap.

You don’t realize the power you have until you need it, I guess. My advice to young women today is to realize you can accomplish more than you realize —with focus, drive, and perseverance, your dreams can come true.

Generation Next G E N E R AT I O N N E X T is a college readiness, access, and completion program created to correct disparities in education.

It ensures that students of color, firstgeneration college students, and/or low-income students have increased access to opportunities that will further their education. The program works with students to achieve college admission, integrate into college life, and complete a post-secondary program. Additionally, it provides opportunities for students who wish to seek vocational and technical training.

The curriculum includes a socialemotional learning component that

incorporates lessons on identity exploration, personal organization, mental health awareness, and professional networking. Students are paired with mentors who stay in contact with them after admission to college or university, providing them with a monthly check-in, personalized support, and a lifelong peer network.

Generation Next serves high school students in the Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton area school districts.
