a star is born this issue is a long time coming for the fig team. Since the first issue of Fig Bethlehem published three years ago, it has been a desire of ours to do a celestial-themed issue. Stars, a symbol of hope and light, are an integral part of Bethlehem's history—and the city shines bright with them this time of year. The Star of Bethlehem (Pennsylvania) was first illuminated on December 7, 1937 during the country's Great Depression. Bethlehem residents looked to South Mountain with hope and faith that better days were ahead. Seventy-nine years since that star first illuminated the night sky, we are still wishing on Bethlehem’s star. We wish for peace and unity, collaboration and progress, love and kindness—in our community and beyond. May your holiday be merry and bright, The Fig Team

Tom Moroz, Founder & Director of LV Social Impact Center
AUTH E N T IC : t o m m o r o z the concept of social entrepreneurship has emerged
over the past few decades as a hybrid of government action and business venture that addresses societal problems either too narrow for legislative action or too unrewarding for financial investment. The Lehigh Valley’s own social entrepreneurship bona fides are about to get a boost from Tom Moroz, founder & director of the Lehigh Valley Social Impact Center, or the LVSIC. The LVSIC is an incubator space that will educate, support, and provide resources to individuals and organizations seeking
entrepreneurial strategies to address social, environmental, and civic issues in the Lehigh Valley. Tom himself is a Valley native who received his Bachelor’s degree from Penn State University and his MBA from Lehigh University. Though Tom began his professional career at Deloitte Consulting in New York City, he was drawn back to the idea of a social mission. “I helped to set up and run a soup kitchen and men’s shelter for a couple of years while there,” he says. Also during that time, the opportunity came up to go to Russia through the Peace Corps in 1994, where he eventually became the Chief Knowledge
Officer of George Soros’s Open Society Foundation. “Working in philanthropy for 15 years, I saw this divide between the for-profit world and the nonprofit world,” Tom says. “And that’s when I encountered the Impact Hub,” which is a concept conceived in London in 2005. These experiences became the inspiration and the impetus for Tom’s Lehigh Valley Social Impact Center, and deep roots with friends and family in the area are what ultimately motivated Tom to create the LVSIC here. “I feel like I’m coming full circle now by being back in Bethlehem,” he says. VIBRANT COMMUNITY In this Season of Giving, PBS39 reminds our community of the importance of supporting local public media. Your support is vital to PBS39’s commitment to providing programming—on-air, online, and in the community—that is educational, informative, entertaining, and inspirational.
T
he impact of PBS39 programming can be felt year-round throughout our region, with special emphasis given to serving communities in need. PBS39 inspires students of all ages to discover their passions. Young children can enjoy Create With Me craft workshops at Bethlehem Area Public Library branches, while middle school students can learn what it’s like to work in our region’s many exciting industries through the “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?” video contest. Presented alongside Manufacturers Resource Center and Dream It. Do It. Pennsylvania, the contest pairs student teams from 31 schools in our region with area manufacturers, and each team completes a short video to highlight its partner company. PBS39 also prepares high school students for careers in media, inviting them to learn from our Emmy Award-winning production team during our Production U Summer Camp every July. Of course, none of these programs would be possible without you. For more information on how your generosity can help PBS39 touch the community, please visit wlvt.org/support.

Nikki Testa, Founder of Backpack Pals Bethlehem
GIVI N G B ACK : n i k k i t e s ta "food is not a privilege,"says Nikki Testa of Backpack Pals of Bethlehem, which provides backpacks full of non-perishable food for area students who qualify for the free and reduced lunch schedule at school for long holidays and other in-service days.
Those children usually receive breakfast and lunch on those days, and since they’re already at a high risk of not eating properly—or even having nothing to eat at all—Nikki fills each backpack with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack, as well as hygiene items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, and soap. Nikki started Backpack Pals in September of
2013 when she learned of a similar program in Easton at her church one day. As a mom herself who was raised by a hardworking single mom, Nikki thinks it’s unacceptable that any child should be food insecure in our society. Backpack Pals is currently a one-woman operation, with the support of numerous volunteers, that relies completely on the beneficence of the local community. In addition to regular food drives, five area churches collect food on a monthly basis and provide food for Nikki’s backpacks, with transportation support by food services company Sodexo. The Sands has even donated and installed shelving for her
storage area, and will be providing some food in the future. What began in one school three years ago now serves six Bethlehem-area schools. But in this sluggish economy, the need is still great—and dire. Ample research has shown that malnutrition can have long-lasting effects on children’s growth and ability to learn. For Nikki, making sure kids don’t go hungry is simply the right thing to do. As Nikki says: “They didn't choose the circumstances that got them to be hungry.” Email backpackpalspa@gmail.com to find out how you can help! figbethlehem.com

SOCIAL MISSION BE PART OF THE
At Fig, we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. We believe in the mission of New Bethany Ministries—our 2016 Social Mission Partner. Please consider giving to them with your dollars and your time this year.
new bethany ministries family
At New Bethany Ministries, we accomplish our mission of providing opportunities for a secure future to the hungry, homeless, poor, and mentally ill of the Lehigh Valley with the help of our generous community partners. In 2015, more than 850 volunteers donated over 9,600 hours of service. Whether through volunteering, making a monetary contribution, running a drive, serving on our Board, or participating in an event, our organization welcomes every community member to engage with us in a way meaningful to them.
Here are just a few examples of ways in which you can support New Bethany Ministries: PARTICIPATE IN LUMINARIA NIGHT: On December 10, be the light in your neighbor’s darkest hours by participating in the 19th Annual Luminaria Night. All proceeds from the evening of community building and beautiful lights benefit New Bethany Ministries. Luminaria orders can be handed in to your local block captain or placed via New Bethany Ministries. Also, luminaria can be purchased on-site during distribution days on December 3, 5, and 6 at the Illicks Mill Poolhouse. Learn more about Luminaria Night on our website, or by looking up Luminaria Night on Facebook or Twitter. VOLUNTEER WITH US: Given the diversity of our programming and extended hours of operation, there is truly a volunteer opportunity for everyone at New Bethany Ministries. Single-day and recurring volunteer opportunities are available for individuals/ groups in all of our programs. Text “VOLUNTEERING” to 41444 to serve with us, or check out our website. MAKE A DONATION: New Bethany Ministries relies on the generosity of its community partners to fund a majority of its service programs. In 2015, over 4,000 individuals, companies, faith groups, and organizations contributed to New Bethany, helping us impact almost 7,000 neighbors in need. The organization is audited annually for sound stewardship practices. To make a contribution, text “NEWBETH” to 41444, or visit our website. HOST A DRIVE: New Bethany Ministries is grateful for in-kind donations of food, hygiene items, household necessities, specific clothing items, skills, and bedding. We are appreciative to all groups willing to run a drive or collect donations on the organization’s behalf. Please give us a call or visit our website to learn more about how easy it is to set up a drive for New Bethany.
We thank you for supporting New Bethany Ministries and our mission this holiday season!

bethlehem is turning 3! Good things don’t just happen—they happen by good design. For the last three years, it has been our pleasure to package the City of Bethlehem as a destination for shopping, dining, arts, and events. At Fig Industries, we believe communities are stronger when small businesses are supported, non-profits celebrated, and special individuals recognized. Thank you to the partners, organizations, and readers who are helping us fulfill our mission. Three years of social mission! Fig has proudly supported New Bethany Ministries, Lehigh Valley Girls Rock, and Touchstone Theatre through our social mission partnership. Find out more at figbethlehem.com/turningthree.

we're READY to CELEBRATE The doors of Bell Gate are officially open, and we cannot wait to help plan your next celebration.
bell gate farm has been around a long time. Built in 1780, its
pastoral environs are ideal for just about any kind of celebration or gathering you can imagine. Stephanie Stevens, whose family purchased the farm in 1963, has just completed a revitalization of the estate that would make her parents proud. When they were first married, Stephanie’s father was a successful lawyer with a substantial debt load, but her mother was a frugal nurse who grew up in the Pennsylvania coal region. Together they transformed Bell Gate Farm into a tranquil retreat for family, friends, and associates. Sadly, Stephanie’s parents both passed away recently. “I was very close to my parents,” she says, “and I felt untethered when I lost them.” But Stephanie had an epiphany during her mother’s funeral 38

that would honor both their lives and her relationship with them— convert the farmhouse, barn, and guesthouse into a soup-to-nuts events venue to meet every budget. In addition to weddings, parties, and corporate meetings, Stephanie wants Bell Gate Farm to be a true community, including outdoor movie nights, a Santa’s Village complete with sleigh rides, and eventually a General Store. It would be a combination of the Saucon Valley Promenade and Peddler’s Village, yet more intimate. “Bell Gate Farm is a labor of love and legacy,” Stephanie says, “and at the end of the day that’s what’s most important.” Learn more at bellgatefarm.com.
