G I V E N T H E P R O D U C T I O N schedule of a print publication, we’re always thinking (at least!) a season ahead. As I write this letter, the leaves outside my window are still glowing fiery reds and golds. But if I crane my neck just a bit as I peek outside, there’s a boom truck parked by the lamppost on the corner with a worker perched high, affixing small trees to the lamppost. I’ve already spied a few holiday-decked shop windows. Lights glow on the trees along Main Street, and a green garland has been strung across New Street on the South Side for weeks now. By the time you read this, Bethlehem will be fully abuzz with holiday cheer. Watching the City transform over these past few weeks has had me thinking of all the folks who are working behind the scenes in Bethlehem—to care for our community, and the people in it, in myriad ways. Some of the most tireless champions are in our area nonprofits. In this issue, we highlight just a few of the inspiring organizations doing good work here: providing food, warm clothes, and supplies for those in need; offering educational programs that open minds and create opportunities; enriching our lives with the arts in all forms; and more. Please read about these organizations starting on page 34, and throughout the book—and consider supporting one or more of them through donations, volunteering, or both. And let’s not forget the hard-working small business owners in our community. How fortunate are we to be able to walk into our favorite coffee shop, retailer, or restaurant and find exactly what we need: a “just right”
A NOTE FROM FIG
the beauty amongst the bustle.
gift, a celebratory meal, a fresh-brewed cup of coffee to start our day, a delectable treat as an afternoon pick-me-up. It’s easy to take it for granted, to forget the people behind the business, and all the work that goes into providing you and me with these everyday riches. Our “Local Gifting” feature section, starting on page 16, Props courtesy of RustiK Rehab is a beautiful list of businesses creating and curating their shops and spaces— just in time for you to “shop local” for the holidays. In all the hustle and bustle of the season, it’s important to pause and look around—really look—at what’s right here around us. To be grateful for this community, and for those dedicated to making it better. And then, to think about how we can share that gratitude. Lend a hand, spend some time, donate, say thank you: at the holidays and all year long. KIERA WILHELM & THE FIG INDUSTRIES TEAM

AUTHENTIC Leading the way through innovation and example. Chloe Cole-Wilson Artistic Director, Basement Poetry
Authentic: Chloe Cole-Wilson EVEN AS A KID, Chloe Cole-Wilson wanted to help people. “And,” she says, “I was always very good with words.” Now, as artistic director for Basement Poetry, she combines her passion and her power: using her words to help. Basement Poetry is a performance art group focusing on slam poetry and movement theater, dedicated to creating a courageous and safe place to connect with others. It grew, like so many movements, out of a desire to create what didn’t already exist. “It started out with five women sitting in a classroom at NCC,” says Chloe. “We looked at each other, and were like: there’s not enough art for women, for
women of color, for Millennials, for us.” From their first performances, it grew to touch the Lehigh Valley at large. Deirdre Van Walters now serves as the organization’s president; Kristina Haynes as vice president; Zinnia Santiago as secretary; and Brooke Whitmire as technical and marketing director. Their annual fundraiser, A Night of Soul, will take place in 2019 at the Ice House. Their shows are personal, emotionally intense, and focus on topics from mental health to gender, race, and identity; next year’s performance, Heal, will look at sexual abuse and trauma. “The coolest part, the most interesting and vital part,” says Chloe,
“is community organizing. It’s about creating intimate spaces to talk about social and political issues that can be polarizing.” Audience members will approach performers after a show to express gratitude for the experience, having been moved in person, human to human. “We live in an age of movement,” says Chloe. “Constantly going from one destination to the next. We try our best to create these spaces to keep us sacred. Removing outside stressors. Focusing on one topic at hand. And getting people involved.” Find out more about Basement Poetry on Facebook @BasementPoems

Rich Thompson, Founder, Factory LLC
Fresh Face: Factory RICH THOMPSON HAS built things all his life. A serial entrepreneur who started his first business as a teenager, he’s served as CEO of American Italian Pasta Company, the Meow Mix Company, and FreshPet. His latest endeavor, Factory, is something that’s “never been done before,” he says: an operating company with $250 million to invest in young companies that offers more than capital. Housed in a beautifully renovated 40,000 square-foot old Bethlehem Steel building—"building 96" built for World War II steel manufacturing on Bethlehem’s SouthSide—Factory isn’t based on traditional venture
capital or private equity models. To entrepreneurs, developing less processed food with “better for you” ingredients “we supply more than just money and a conference room with smart people,” says Thompson. Factory provides those, of course, but other assets as well: financial and human resource management; the experience of Thompson and his partners, Keith Caldwell, Tim Pollack, and Prateek Lal, and Factory’s dedicated staff; and the factory space itself, which includes test and development kitchens, marketing and communications equipment, and an event space for hosting pitch competitions.
The vision for Factory and its surrounding campus is extraordinary. Thompson sees it hosting large community events while also offering internship opportunities for students. And like Bethlehem Steel once thrived at the logistical nexus of New York, Philadelphia, and New Jersey, Thompson believes the Lehigh Valley is poised to become another Boulder, Colorado, or Austin, Texas: a hub for growth, partnership, and opportunity, with a focus on millennial interests—like food with fewer processed ingredients. “I’m trying to use the Factory as a seed,” says Thompson, “to start a real movement in the Lehigh Valley.”

Fresh Face: Church Street Market W H E N G E N E V I E V E M A R C O N moved to Bethlehem six years ago, something was wanting. She loved being here—her husband is originally from Allentown—but the pharmaceutical sales trainer worked from home, and missed being able to pop down to a coffee shop and chat with her neighbors. Opening Church Street Market was both the culmination of a food lover’s dream and a gift to her community: a space where neighbors could run into each other, have a conversation, and share a meal. “That feels good,” she says. “To have [created] a space where people are making those connections.” It’s also a space where local businesses can connect with customers. The Market offers a seasonal menu of delicious breakfast and lunch options, sandwiches, wraps, toasts, and bowls, as well as a selection of local goods, from Monocacy Coffee, Matty’s Marvelous Bakery, Lehigh Valley Kombucha, and Valley Milk House Cheese, and baked goods from Made by Lino and Sweet Doe, among others.
Genevieve Marcon, Owner, Church Street Market
Genevieve still works in pharmaceutical training, but when she’s at the Market, she’s “the bonus set of hands,” who can cook, clean, or pour the coffee, as warm and welcoming as everyone on staff. Church Street Market was born of a sincere wish to provide a common space for people in Bethlehem to gather, and Genevieve hopes it will become a part of the fabric of daily life. Whether you’re looking for a catered lunch, a sweet treat with a friend, or a oneof-a-kind pop-up dinner, you’re always welcome at Church Street Market—where good food doesn’t have to be an occasion, but a daily reminder of what’s possible in the place where you live.

Aardvark Stories: Rob & Aubrey O’Byrne SIX YEARS AGO, after moving to the Lehigh Valley, Rob and Aubrey O’Byrne made a fateful decision. Following a friend’s recommendation, the couple visited Aardvark Sports Shop to purchase their first “real” pairs of running shoes. “If you’d have asked me then, ‘Are you a runner?’ I’d have said I’d never be a runner. Now, life revolves around running,” says Rob, who has since completed numerous half marathons and marathons. Aubrey and Rob, married for eight years, started attending the store’s weekly group runs and training with Team Vark, a 16week half marathon training program.

As they evolved from non-runners to marathoners themselves, the couple helped Team Vark grow from a 20-person group to the almost 100 runners who comprise the team now. “We never wanted anyone to feel like they didn’t belong here,” says Aubrey. Over the years, their love of running has intensified, and so has their love for one another. “We have gotten closer because of Aardvark. We get to spend more time together and support each other,” says Aubrey, who recently completed her first marathon. “If Rob knows that I’m training for something, he’s going to do whatever it A ARDVARKSPORTSSHOP.COM

takes to help me get me there, and vice versa.” Beyond running, Aardvark has supported the couple through the ups and downs of life. “Team Vark has been a stability in our life to keep us going in a positive direction. That has worked for a lot of people that have had struggles,” says Aubrey. Team Vark is something that will literally be a part of their lives forever. On his 33rd birthday, Rob got a tattoo of the shop’s mascot, Aandy the Aardvark, on his leg. “It doesn’t just represent a sneaker store,” Rob says. “To me it symbolizes the camaraderie of Team Vark.”

Voices: Billy Bauer Band B E T H L E H E M - B A S E D acoustic rockers Billy Bauer Band are no secret to the Greater Lehigh Valley community. The band is one of the region’s most popular and enduring original acts, known for their relaxed, positive energy and an intricate, yet accessible musicality that calls contemporary jam influences like Dave Matthews Band to mind. The band—consisting of singer/guitarist Billy Bauer, electric violinist Chris Lorenzetti, bassist Steve Zalalas, and drummer Drew Somers—recently released its first studio single in six years, “So I Love”.
Produced by Tommy Joyner at MilkBoy the Studio in Philadelphia, “So I Love” is an up-tempo, yet reflective piece of alternative rock that features an infectious melody, impassioned vocals, and the harmonizing voice of Chris Lorenzetti’s electric violin to perfectly express the pain of love and loss. The song is a tribute to Bauer’s late father, who passed away of pancreatic cancer in 2004. “ ‘So I Love’ is a song that reflects on the loss of my father. Despite time moving on, certain wounds never heal.” Bauer notes. “But, that shouldn’t prevent a happy life. Instead, I choose love, on both the good and bad days.”
Billy Bauer Band plans to return to the studio this winter to record its follow-up single, “Worms”, followed by a full-length effort projected for 2019. The band is also focused on expanding its reach outside of the Lehigh Valley by lining up out-of-town shows, starting with a bus trip to famous New York City venue The Bitter End on Saturday, December 15. Tickets to the show—and to ride the bus—are currently available at billybauerband.com/shop while they last. For more information, including show and new release updates, visit the band online at billybauerband.com.

DONNA FO R S Y T H E
lehigh valley celebrants in 2014, after marriage equality passed nationwide, Donna Forsythe officiated an elopement for two men who had been together for decades, and never thought they could legally marry. “It was the first time I married anyone,” she says, “and it was life-changing.” The career educator, who was getting her master's degree with the intent to become a school principal at the time, sought endorsement from the Humanist Society (HS), and began officiating secular ceremonies and celebrations part-time. As the first Humanist Celebrant in the greater Lehigh Valley, “it wasn’t long before I was turning away more business than I could take.” Now, she’s the full-time owner of Lehigh Valley Celebrants, and has trained four other HS-endorsed women to craft personal, deeply meaningful ceremonies for couples and individuals to share big moments in their lives with their families, friends, and each other. Lehigh Valley Celebrants officiate weddings, vow renewals, baby welcomings, and, most recently, transgender naming ceremonies—a free service offered to those looking to celebrate their new selves while honoring and releasing their former name and gender identities. Forsythe and her celebrants work closely with their clients to create joyful, beautifully personalized ceremonies where everyone feels they are a part of the day. They work hard to bring laughter, happy tears—“basically, all the feels”—to these events. When participants and guests, and venue coordinators and photographers (who have seen a ceremony or two), ask her to officiate their own life events, she feels “overjoyed.” And if she could offer some encouragement to her younger self, who thought her life’s path would be different? “You are more powerful and capable,” she says, “than you realize.”

GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.
Giving Back: Hector Lopez IN 2014 , WHEN HECTOR LOPEZ was interviewing to manage the SouthSide Ambassadors—a national program facilitated by downtown improvement company Block By Block, and engaged locally by the Bethlehem Economic Development Corporation—he took a walk around the SouthSide of Bethlehem. He asked himself: what would I do, to take care of this place? At first, “it was overwhelming,” the Allentown native says. But, to the self-proclaimed “neat freak,” the possibility was exciting, and the potential for change couldn’t be denied. Four years later, Hector and his dedicated crews—a morning cleanup crew, and an evening safety and hospitality crew—have made a difference. Sidewalks are cleaner. Buildings are free of graffiti. If you’re new to the area, a person in a friendly yellow uniform might approach and offer directions, or recommend a terrific sandwich shop. The SouthSide is experiencing tremendous new growth, and the Ambassadors are a part of that. And this is their home: most of Hector’s crew members were born and raised in Bethlehem. Now “they’re getting paid to clean up their neighborhood,” says Hector. “And they’re taking pride in that.” Hector is still picturing the future. “One day,” he says, “I want to see lights and hear music in the streets [on the SouthSide]. I want to see it bright, and shining, and for my ambassadors to be walking around and through it, helping folks feel comfortable.” Big changes are possible when people care, and when energy and passion lead to simple actions. “All we did,” says Hector, “was come in and clean.”
