the perfect presence As we enter this holiday season, I can't help but relive a priceless memory that happened twelve years ago on the terrace of the Longwood Gardens Conservatory. Overlooking the fountains lit up in all their glory, and surrounded by millions of twinkling holiday lights, my husband got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. That very spot is one we still love to walk to often and tell our children about. I can imagine many of you have similar stories of specific spots around our beautiful town that are woven into your own history. Ours is a town where nostalgia abounds and traditions are born. Where walking down State Street this time of year reminds you of why we love to call this place home. From boutique shopping, to one-of-a-kind craft brews, to eclectic art, Kennett Square can claim it all. As the new Director of Fig Kennett, I have the extraordinary honor of getting to know the outstanding small business owners and community contributors who make our town shine. They offer their time and talent. They gather people. They give. They foster growth. As I listen to both their struggles and successes, I am consistently blown away by their passion, creativity, and generosity. In the pages of this issue, you will find many of these retailers and businesses who have put their heart and soul into bringing something unique to Kennett Square. In addition, they are giving back to the community in some very special ways. I hope you'll join me in shopping local this holiday season. Be sure to check out our Fig Gift Guide, found on page 20, with plenty of ideas to wrap in pretty bows for your loved ones. From mushroom goodies to the perfect pair of party heels, we've got you covered! And don't miss the Historic Kennett Events Page, found on page 49, which will ensure you have plenty of small town fun to add to your calendar this season. Among the list of new locations that you'll find in this issue, I'm happy to announce that we have a new location of our own. Fig has moved into a studio space right in the heart of the historic district! Take a peek inside my State Street office on page 30. As 2016 comes to a close and we look ahead to a brand new year, may I humbly urge you to make memories, savor traditions, and invest in your community. Warmest Wishes,
BRIANNA CARLISLE

Kristin Proto Executive Director of The Garage Youth Center
AUTHENTIC : imagine your ideal family.
Does it happen to include 500 teenagers? For Kristin Proto, Executive Director of The Garage Youth Center, it does. Of course, Proto has her own thriving nuclear family. She and husband Anthony have a two-year-old, Lydia, and a bundle of joy on the way (plus 5 chickens!). But Proto’s family extends far beyond her home’s four walls. Working closely with her staff, Proto oversees all aspects of The Garage, which has locations both in Kennett Square and 4 figkennett.com
kristin proto West Grove. The center’s mission is to empower at-risk middle and high schoolers to reach their full potential, through tutoring, mentoring, summer internships, education on healthy relationships, and just plain fun. When asked what drew her to The Garage, she says, “The sense of community…and the familial aspect was really appealing to me.” And Proto, a native of Pittsburgh, can also relate to the students she serves. “I see myself in them.” Growing up in a difficult family situation herself, she says, “I know what it’s like to be in their shoes, and there
were a lot of people in my life who served as coaches, teachers, and mentors in different ways. That’s a piece of why I do this work.” The Kennett Square Garage sees an average of 40 students a day, 90% of whom are low-income. The challenges are great, but so are the joys. “When you’re working with students who are at this impressionable age, they see the world so differently, and it’s really refreshing and surprising…it’s uplifting and inspiring.” Learn more about The Garage Youth Center at garageyouthcenter.org.

shop small this season a guide to local gifts
w e a s k e d o u r s e lv e s , “ W h a t m a k e s t h e h o l i d a y s e a s o n s o s p e c i a l ? ” We found our answers in the details, from memories with loved ones and the celebration of traditions, to the anticipation of the big reveal that awaits beneath the wrappings. This season is a time to be fully present and appreciate the memories being made around you.
thoughtful gifting—reasons to shop small this season
1
find unique, diverse, quality gifts—curated by the best. Local shop owners hand-select their product line and make it their business to understand the types of goods, gifts, and fashions that will surprise and delight everyone on your list.
2
support our local economy Buying local means that more of your dollars stay in our community. For every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, $73 remains in the local economy.*
3
enrich our community
throughout the book you will find a collection of gift ideas sourced from local retailers in Kennett Square, like the Bove Jewelers silver locket Blythe recieved from her father! Turn the pages and be inspired!
Local sales tax supports vital local services, including police and fire protection, street repairs, and trash collection.
4
the gift that keeps on giving Many local events and initiatives that are making a difference are supported, sponsored, or engineered by small business owners.
5
create new traditions Shopping locally is an experience. You can return with your loved ones year after year to experience the magic and whimsy of choosing the perfect gifts for the people you love. Silver locket from Bove Jewelers T H E H O L I DAY I SS U E

worKS
A curated group of high-end purveyors of artisan, designer, handcrafted, vintage & one-of-a-kind goods for the home, the person & the connoisseur.
so you want to support local businesses
with your holiday shopping. And you want to find unique, high-quality items. And you want to be able to shop for just about everyone on your list in one place. Sounds like a tall order. But it’s not too tall for worKS. worKS is a brand-new collective of 16 artisans under one roof, located at 432 South Walnut Street. It’s the brainchild of Tara Dugan, owner of State Street home store Scout & Annie. Over the years of procuring goods for her store, she met a number of very talented artists. One day, she got the idea to curate a collective where artisans with complementary work could share retail space. Dugan carefully selected the artisans both for their quality—“They’re all top in their field”—and their ability to enrich the shopping experience. “There were certain elements I absolutely had in mind that I wanted to introduce into the worKS mix. Then other people got folded in and it’s worked out beautifully.” Many of the artisans are well-established and have a retail location elsewhere, but they were all excited to come together in Kennett Square. “Kennett is a very creativeminded community and open to trying new things and embracing new ideas,” Dugan says. So, what will you find at worKS? Handmade purses. Vintage fashion. Handmade stationery. Ceramics and tableware. Hand-painted furniture. Antiques. Mid-century modern. Soaps and candles. Custom re-upholstery. And that’s just a sampling. Check it out for yourself. To learn more about worKS visit workskennettsquare.com or follow on facebook and instagram @workskennettsquare.

in today's fashion, there are a lot of cross-over styles. Take leggings and a sweater, for instance: easy, comfortable, and stylish for every age.
“Affordable boutique” might strike some as an oxymoron, but it’s the foundational principle of Mamie. “That’s basically why we started our entire business,” says co-owner Megan Corey.
Besides clothing, Mamie stocks booties, funky jewelry, scarves, and great “graband-go” gift items like Kate Spade tumblers, stationery, and wine bags. There’s even a small children’s section with clothing and baby gift items. Kanzleiter says, “You can walk out of here with a bag of gifts under $100, but it’s from a boutique, so it’s special.”
at 116 South Union Street. Philosophically, however, it’s smack at the intersection of Style and Affordability.
Corey describes their women’s clothing as “trendy and current, but also classic and feminine.” The store draws everyone from middle school girls to mature women. As co-owner Amy Kanzleiter points out,
In addition to style and affordability,
customer service is also a high priority for the owners. They often develop relationships with their repeat customers, and strive to make Mamie a warm and welcoming place. While the Kennett shop just opened in September, the best friends have been in business together since launching an online store in 2008, then expanded to a storefront in Wilmington three years ago. Now, they’re thrilled to be a part of Kennett’s thriving business community. To learn more about Mamie Boutique visit shopmamie.com figkennett.com

Currently, Yetter serves as the Vice President of the Kennett Library Board of Trustees, treasurer of Kennett Area Community Service (KACS), and chair of the Kennett Township Land Conservation Advisory Committee.
KACS is flourishing too, he says, citing their new Resource Center and Bridges Out of Poverty Initiative. “KACS is so much more than just food,” he says. Last year, KACS helped 80 homeless families find temporary or permanent homes.

The progress in each is exciting. “We will build a new library,” Yetter promises, saying the vision for the new building goes beyond books, and for the library to become a 26 figkennett.com

That might sound like a lot, but he was well prepared from his career as a manufacturing representative. “I always had a dozen balls in the air, so going from 60 miles an hour to zero made me crazy.” He seized the opportunity to team up with others to invest in his community. Carlos E. Vargas owner
FRESH FACE :
take a flour tortilla and fill it with
Mediterranean flavors like chicken, hummus, tabouli, feta, and tzatziki. What do you call it? Mexiterranean. Where can you find it? Only at Kaboburritos. “It’s one of a kind,” owner Chef Carlos E. Vargas says. Located in the Market at Liberty Place, the fast casual restaurant merges Mediterranean and Mexican. The menu features a build-yourown style; customers choose their protein (meat, seafood, or falafel), their entrée (burritos, bowls, tacos, and salads), and their style (Mediterranean or Mexican). Before opening Kaboburritos, Vargas
kaboburritos spent more than 19 years in the restaurant business, working in various cuisines—French, Mediterranean, and Mexican toname a few— at every level, from dishwasher to sous chef to owner. Surprisingly, Kaboburritos was born in South Korea, where he and his wife temporarily lived. After Vargas won at an International Cooking Festival with his Greek cuisine entry, he got the idea to begin selling kabob wraps. He developed a following of loyal customers, then added Mexican to the menu at their request. Vargas says the two cuisines “translate” really well: “For every Mexican ingredient, there is a Mediterranean equivalent.”
Back in the States, Kennett Square struck him as the perfect place to open his own restaurant. “Kennett is up and coming. It’s booming, and I saw this as an opportunity to be part of that growth,” he says. And the Market at Liberty Place, with its Reading Terminal Market feel, was an attractive location. His senses were right: already, Kaboburritos is drawing in crowds. Stop in to 148 West State Street to find out why Kaboburritos is changing the game in Kennett Square, or find more info online at Kaboburritos.com.

what is the kennett greenway?
SOCIAL MISSION At Fig, we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions —one that creates community connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. We believe in the mission of the Kennett Trails Alliance—our 2016 Social Mission Partner. Please consider supporting them with your dollars and your time this winter.
Connecting the Kennett community to its natural beauty while promoting health, safety, a respect for the environment, and a sense of community.
The Kennett Greenway is an initiative to physically connect the Kennett community to its natural beauty through the formation of a 10-12 mile pedestrian and bicycle loop. This network of trails, linking Kennett’s preserved open space, recreational facilities, and other community assets such as retail, restaurants, and points of interest, will be interconnected, safe, and well-maintained. This initiative is made possible by the Kennett Trails Alliance along with the support of many other local organizations. It seeks to connect the Kennett community to its natural beauty while promoting health, safety, a respect for the environment, and a sense of community. To learn more about the Kennett Greenway, visit www.KennettGreenway.com.

CEO FOR A
DAY this is the story of a 12-year-old boy, who with the help of the leaders in his community, realized he was extraordinary.
Patti Brennan, CEO of Key Financial, Inc. and board member of the YMCA of Brandywine Valley, handed her title over for a day to 12 year old Wyatt, whom she met through a special program called Believe and Achieve. Dressed to impress with his name on the door and his own parking spot, the new CEO for the day shadowed Patti for a hands-on experience. Conquering memos, co-signing letters, and even granting vacation days, Wyatt got a real life understanding of leadership that just can’t be taught in a classroom. At the end, he left inspired with a new outlook of what his future could look like‌ and the belief that with the right choices, he can do anything he sets his sights on.
get involved. Key Financial urges other local leaders to follow in their
footsteps and reach out to make an impact on younger generations. Lead by example and give back to the community by presenting new opportunities to children who might not otherwise have that chance. 48 1045 andrew drive, suite a, west chester 610.429.9050 keyfinancialinc.com

TURNER & COMPANY the sign outside of Turner and
Company reads: Dogs Welcome. Indeed, at the flagstone entrance, a Labrador retriever and a mini poodle greet customers to the women’s clothing store. In 2004, Turner and Company originated as a mobile store inside a custom-built trailer that owner Ashley Rust took to horse shows around the country. The selection at her brick-andmortar store, which opened in Willowdale Town Center on September 6, is influenced by those years on the horse show circuit. Rust describes her style as “elevated casual.” Her staples are denim, sweaters,
and outerwear. These days, she says, “Great jeans go anywhere.” Turner and Company carries contemporary, flattering clothes that are extremely wearable. “All of my lines have a huge focus on fabrics and feel,” says Rust. She’s drawn to soft, high-quality items by established lines, such as J Brand, Citizens of Humanity jeans, Joie tops, and Eric Javits hats. In outerwear, Rust favors lines that are practical and stylish, such as Australian Blundstone boots and British Barbour jackets. “It rains so much in England that they know their outerwear,” she jokes.
Rust has also had some items customdesigned, such as hand-made belts styled after those worn by Argentinian Polo players. Because Rust hand-sells her items, she knows exactly what her customers want. “I can visualize the customer I’m buying for,” she says. “People can trust my vision for their look.” Oh, and if you’re wondering about the name: Turner is Rust’s middle name. And the “Company"? That would be the dogs. Learn more about Turner & Company by visiting their Facebook page.
