A NOTE FROM FIG

savor every moment I FIND THAT WINTER PROGRESSES like two dramatic and well-balanced movements of a symphony—the magical crescendo of holiday decoration, preparation, and celebration, followed by the decrescendo of a slower pace, silent falling snow, and the coziness you find in quiet evenings at home. From the exquisite sights of A Longwood Christmas, to the excitement of grabbing your sleds on a perfect snowy day, there is nothing quite like winter in Kennett Square. But perhaps the best part of all is the opportunity to give meaningfully to the people and the causes that we love. This issue of Fig is an invitation to fall in love with shopping again. Yes, it’s doable! Here’s the plan—grab a friend or loved one, stop in for coffee and sustenance at Talula’s Table, then begin your day of old-fashioned analog shopping through downtown Historic Kennett Square. Slowly peruse each shop, chat with the business owners, and learn about how they curate their product collections. Hold and touch things, breathe in the crisp air as you walk. Stop to enjoy the strolling carolers, or take a carriage ride through town. It’s in the simple act of unplugging, slowing down, and shopping locally that we regain our love of giving and gifting.

And while you consider the loved ones on your shopping list, we have also included a section in this issue we’re calling the Giving Back Guide. In a way, this guide serves as a shopping list for the important organizations doing outstanding nonprofit work in our community. It was designed to inform and inspire you to support the causes you feel speak to you. As 2017 comes to a close, we are celebrating four years of loving local and designing for good in Kennett Square. It is our continued mission to creatively communicate the compelling stories, people, and businesses that make our town so special. Warmest Wishes, BRIANNA CARLISLE & THE FIG INDUSTRIES TEAM

Fresh Face: Mezze by Del Fresco WHAT IS “MEZZE”? A selection of small plates, or tapas. A fresh and seasonal tasting menu of lite fare to enjoy with friends. Elegant, shareable food in a casual atmosphere. Mezze is about great food and community, and it’s the newest addition to Kennett Square’s exciting restaurant scene.

“where you can share and taste a little of everything.” Each beautifully presented dish is scratch made with locally-sourced ingredients. It’s “wholesome, down-toearth food with lots of great flavors,” Cini says. But it’s also a unique concept, something “you just have to try to appreciate.”

In 2016, Wilmington native Andrew Cini launched a catering company, Del Fresco Events. A year later, he needed a base and a kitchen, and the vision for Mezze developed as organically as his seasonallyinspired tapas and small bites. “I’ve always loved this style of dining,” he says,

Mezze enables everyone, regardless of busy schedules, to eat well. Pop in for Mezze’s express lunch at the snack bar featuring “fan favorites” Bravas potatoes and mushroom empanadas, or bring the kids after school or between activities for a healthy snack. Share Mezze’s popular

8

“taste the menu” option with family or friends, enjoy oysters with music and a glass of wine on Friday evenings at the Market, or order food online for pick-up and enjoy a tapas plate at home. Cini describes Kennett Square as the perfect fit for Mezze. “People here are open to trying something a little different,” he says. The team—with Cini in the kitchen, Bradley Goodman as general manager, and Grace Szczerba as “the glue that holds them together”—looks forward to introducing you to Mezze, where sharing and snacking happens.

The Magic of

The generosity of our community is part of our magic. The ways in which we all give of our time, talent, and resources is the golden thread that weaves our community together and connects each of us to the causes we care deeply about. Whether it’s our children and families, our education and health, the richness of our arts, history, and culture, or the beauty of our farmlands and open spaces, it’s all ours to cultivate, cherish, and make better for our future. In the following pages, you’ll find a number of local organizations doing important work in our community. At this most joyous time of year, we invite you to learn more about and support the causes that are meaningful to you. Because giving back is personal, it’s passionate, it’s deliberate. And it makes our community that much more magical.

Family Promise of Southern Chester Co.

Habitat for Humanity of Chester County

The Barn at Spring Brook Farm

Canine Partners for Life

YMCA of Greater Brandywine

Last year, 422 school-age children and their families experienced homelessness in Southern Chester County. Family Promise of Southern Chester County opened its doors in 2015 to help families experiencing homelessness in Kennett, Avon Grove, Oxford, and Unionville-Chadds Ford school districts find stable housing and employment. Family Promise keeps families together by connecting people in need with people who want to help. Their program provides safe, temporary housing, nutritious meals, and the tools to build a secure future. Together, we can change lives...one family at a time.

Habitat for Humanity empowers families in Chester County to achieve independence through homeownership. Members from across our community come together to generously give both volunteer time and money to bring strength and stability to our neighbors by building decent, affordable housing.

Located on 17 acres of beautiful Chester County farmland, The Barn’s mission is to enrich the lives of children with disabilities through animal-assisted activities. They believe deeply in the unique bond between animals and children and provide a caring community where children and their families can thrive.

Each home is sold to a low-income family using a no-interest 30-year mortgage for the full purchase price of the home. More than 90% of all non-designated cash donations are used for home construction, and mortgage payments made to Habitat go back toward the construction or rehabilitation of homes for other low-income families in need.

Individual programs, summer camps, socialization events, field trips, and parent support groups are available to children and families. Their barn is completely handicapped-accessible and their staff and animals are prepared to serve children of all abilities.

The mission of Canine Partners for Life is to increase the independence and quality of life of individuals with physical, developmental, and cognitive disabilities or individuals who are in other situations of need. They train their dogs to meet the specific needs of individuals and the environments in which they are living and seek to establish a lifetime bond between dog and graduate.

In 2016, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine provided $3.8 million in financial assistance to more than 13,424 people, sent more than 4,300 kids to summer camp, taught nearly 1,500 kids life-saving water safety skills, delivered food baskets to 504 homes for Thanksgiving, and provided more than 2,000 children a brighter holiday through their Angel Tree program.

Canine Partners for Life provides and sustains professionally-trained service and companion dogs. They are committed to a comprehensive program of follow-up training and support services to ensure each team’s success in achieving their goals.

Originally from Italy, Elliott taught world languages for 35 years. Ruiz, who came to the U.S. from Mexico, was herself a student in the program. She was later hired as assistant to the director and also taught ESL classes for 9 years. In Kennett Square, the Presbyterian Church, the Episcopal Church of the Advent, and Head Start provide space for classes. A special collaboration with Kendal-Crosslands and a wonderful response from the community have yielded many dedicated tutors. Generous funding comes from the United Way of Southern Chester County and from many other community donors.

Authentic: Nick Quiroz ON THE RARE DAY when he’s not busy creating new seasonal dishes and working with his team to attend to the countless details that make La Madera Bistro such an exceptional and popular restaurant, chef-owner Nicandro (Nick) Quiroz loves to escape to the country—to pick blackberries or sit and listen to birdsong. Quiroz, who grew up on a farm in Mexico, arrived here in 2000 with $100 in his pocket and hardly a word of English. He found a job in a restaurant where he met Tina Dangel, La Madera manager and his

Quiroz realized a life-long dream when he opened La Madera in May 2016. The bistro’s New American cuisine features flavors from around the Mediterranean Basin. While diners taste the difference that fresh, local ingredients make, they also can’t help but notice the love and

Quiroz is happiest when he sees the joy on his customers’ faces. “When you find the thing you really love to do, in a place that you love, you’re so happy,” he says with a smile.

Put on some boots, a warm hat, and jacket and take an invigorating walk through two and a half miles of trails along the Red Clay Creek and picturesque ponds, natural areas, and open lawns. A winter walk through a forest dominated by tulip and beech trees, as well as black gum, hickory, maple, oak, and white ash trees is the perfect remedy for those duldrums. Stir crazy children? Head for the Park’s three playgrounds with colorful swings, slides, and climbing equipment. Conveniently located, a small playground is next to the Walnut Road soccer fields and two larger playgrounds are adjacent to the main entrance road’s parking lot. And maybe cap the outing with a winter picnic at one of the adjacent pavilions equipped with benches and tables. Regardless of the weather, the disc golf course offers a nice mix of wooded and open holes and detailed tee signs are located at each long tee. The course is well used throughout the year and a course map is located near the Park’s main parking lot.

GIVING BACK Making a difference in our community.

Patty Hillkirk, Founder & Executive Director of Camp Dreamcatcher

All proceeds from book sales go directly to the Kennett Area Senior Center. Stop in to see what’s new on the shelves today!

Giving Back: Patty Hilkirk SOMETIMES when you set out to catch a dream, it catches you, too. Psychotherapist Patty Hillkirk was inspired to create Camp Dreamcatcher in 1996 with the mission of providing a therapeutic community for children coping with HIV/AIDS. Back then, she couldn’t have imagined the thousands of children she’d meet and call “her kids.” Hillkirk, surrounded by colorful handmade pillowcases and other donated supplies, smiles as she reflects on 21 years of camp and describes the ever-expanding vision to support HIV/ AIDS-impacted youth. HIV medications have improved, but fear,

40

stigma, and ignorance live on. Hillkirk’s original vision, to provide a safe place for children ages five and up to spend a week each summer sharing openly and engaging in a variety of therapeutic, educational, and recreational activities, remains unchanged. The children face many challenges, but at Camp Dreamcatcher they find family and hope. “These kids are my heroes,” Hillkirk says. “I’m inspired by their empathy, kindness, and resiliency.” Camp Dreamcatcher offers the only therapeutic camp on the East Coast and has served 5,200 youth. Hillkirk, along with 300 volunteers, also organizes

weekend retreats, reunions, mentoring, and extensive educational outreach programs, in addition to ongoing fundraising. Her dreams include offering more support for young adults and a permanent, winterized camp home. All programs Camp Dreamcatcher offers are free. Hillkirk describes the generosity of the Kennett community over the years as “phenomenal.” You can make dreams come true for HIV/AIDS impacted children in our community by making a donation in support of Camp Dreamcatcher (campdreamcatcher.org/ adopt-a-family-program).

SMALL THINGS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE. NEWBORN & PEDIATRIC CARE AT CHESTER COUNTY HOSPITAL

Your child goes by many names...

Emergency hospital visits can be frightening for children and parents alike. In our Emergency Department, we are uniquely prepared to provide for the special needs of children and families, thanks to our affiliation with The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), a world leader in pediatric and neonatal medicine. Our innovative program combines the extensive resources of CHOP with the caring, experienced staff and excellent facilities of Chester County Hospital. Child-Friendly Emergency Department Within our Emergency Department, you’ll find pediatric-sized equipment, instruments and medical supplies — from tiny hospital gowns to pint-sized examination areas to happy diversions for children including games, tablets and a collection of family-favorite DVDs. The CHOP pediatricians who work in our hospital’s inpatient Pediatrics Unit attend to your child’s immediate needs in our Emergency Department, and provide continuity of care for children who may need to be admitted for observation or treatment. Your CHOP inpatient pediatrician will also communicate seamlessly with your child’s own primary care physician.

But when he gets sick, the only name you need to remember is Chester County Hospital. Accidents happen and children get sick all the time, usually on the weekends or in the middle of the night. When that happens, turn to Chester County Hospital, where pediatricians from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia are available in the Emergency Department to provide child-friendly care for your little one. Our long-standing affiliation with CHOP also provides our smallest patients with a dedicated pediatric inpatient unit staffed by CHOP Pediatricians and the only Level III NICU in the county.

CHOP Newborn Care & Pediatric Care Because our inpatient pediatricians and neonatologists are all on staff at CHOP, we’re able to bring a world-renowned level of expertise and care to our youngest patients. Newborn and Pediatric services include a dedicated Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) – the only one in Chester County – for our newborns who need specialized care. CHOP Pediatric Care at Chester County Hospital is a joint pediatric service of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Chester County Hospital. For more information, visit ChesterCountyHospital.org/ED-Pediatrics
