The Magic of

The generosity of our community is part of our magic. The ways in which we all give of our time, talent, and resources is the golden thread that weaves our community together and connects each of us to the causes we care deeply about. Whether it’s our children and families, our education and health, the richness of our arts, history, and culture, or the beauty of our farmlands and open spaces, it’s all ours to cultivate, cherish, and make better for our future. In the following pages, you’ll find a number of local organizations doing important work in our community. At this most joyous time of year, we invite you to learn more about and support the causes that are meaningful to you. Because giving back is personal, it’s passionate, it’s deliberate. And it makes our community that much more magical.

Family Promise of Southern Chester Co.

Habitat for Humanity of Chester County

The Barn at Spring Brook Farm

Last year, 422 school-age children and their families experienced homelessness in Southern Chester County. Family Promise of Southern Chester County opened its doors in 2015 to help families experiencing homelessness in Kennett, Avon Grove, Oxford, and Unionville-Chadds Ford school districts find stable housing and employment. Family Promise keeps families together by connecting people in need with people who want to help. Their program provides safe, temporary housing, nutritious meals, and the tools to build a secure future. Together, we can change lives...one family at a time.

Habitat for Humanity empowers families in Chester County to achieve independence through homeownership. Members from across our community come together to generously give both volunteer time and money to bring strength and stability to our neighbors by building decent, affordable housing.

Located on 17 acres of beautiful Chester County farmland, The Barn’s mission is to enrich the lives of children with disabilities through animal-assisted activities. They believe deeply in the unique bond between animals and children and provide a caring community where children and their families can thrive.

Each home is sold to a low-income family using a no-interest 30-year mortgage for the full purchase price of the home. More than 90% of all non-designated cash donations are used for home construction, and mortgage payments made to Habitat go back toward the construction or rehabilitation of homes for other low-income families in need.

Individual programs, summer camps, socialization events, field trips, and parent support groups are available to children and families. Their barn is completely handicapped-accessible and their staff and animals are prepared to serve children of all abilities.

Thank you to The John Kriza Real Estate Team for sponsoring this placement and for continued support of the mission of Family Promise. HOW TO GIVE: DONATE ONLINE AT familypromisescc.org OR MAIL YOUR DONATION TO PO BOX 394, KENNET T SQUARE, PA 19348

Director Filomena Elliott and Assistant Lupe Ruiz manage the program. Originally from Italy, Elliott taught world languages for 35 years. Ruiz, who came to the U.S. from Mexico, was herself a student in the program. She was later hired as assistant to the director and also taught ESL classes for 9 years. In Kennett Square, the Presbyterian Church, the Episcopal Church of the Advent, and Head Start provide space for classes. A special collaboration with Kendal-Crosslands and a wonderful response from the community have yielded many dedicated tutors. Generous funding comes from the United Way of Southern Chester County and from many other community donors.

Filomena Elliott, Director
