west chester was made

for the holidays. It’s like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting. Colored lights twinkle from trees and buildings, decorations hang inside and out, and windows glow as we walk through the borough. You may hear a church choir practicing or the bells ringing at the University. The crisp air is scented with smoke from a fireplace and freshly cut pine. It’s truly a season of giving—of presents, yes, but also of thanks and love to family and friends. Here at Fig, our gift to you is this Holiday issue, designed to help you make the most of every moment of the season. On these pages, you’ll find inspiration for gifts for everyone on your list, amazing places to hold holiday parties and dinners, and the perfect ingredients to help you create your family feast at home. You’ll also find out about fascinating people and lively events that make West Chester and this corner of Chester County so special, now and all year round. Use Fig to give yourself a gift too. Make shopping locally a tradition and create authentic experiences and memories you just won’t get elbowing your way through a big-box store or at the mall. Step into a shop or boutique and be welcomed with a friendly “hello” as you come through the door. After shopping, take the chill off with a hot chocolate, steaming latte, or your favorite cocktail at one of West Chester’s cafes or restaurants. To make crossing items off your list even easier, many of our merchants are extending their hours on Wednesday evenings, which gives you a great reason to do some shopping and grab dinner afterwards. By the way, parking in borough garages will be free on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday (November 25 & 26). Most importantly, shopping local means you’re supporting local businesses run by and employing your friends and neighbors. You’re not just shopping or dining, you’re making a meaningful contribution to where we all live, which is a gift to us all. Warmest Wishes,

A DR I A N M A R T I N E Z & T H E C H E S T E R C OU N T Y H I S T OR IC A L S O C I E T Y painter adrian martinez looks at the

exhibit he designed for the Chester County Historical Society as a leap—of faith and in the expectation of what a history museum can or should do. Adrian’s The Visionary World of Humphry Marshall is an unconventional meshing of his oil paintings of Chester County history with artifacts of the time, including Marshall’s furniture and scientific instruments. This collision is the culmination of a vision Adrian shared with Rob Lukens, president of the Historical Society, who passed away in 2015. Rob was known for innovative ideas about engaging the public in its history. Adrian has carried through with the concept. “Having a living artist display at a history museum is a little out there,” Adrian says.

“It’s a risk.” It’s a risk he’s uniquely qualified to take. In addition to his painting, Adrian worked as a museum curator for 10 years.

Thomas Jefferson,” Adrian explains. “It meant you wanted to learn about the world around you, to understand the life you were living.”

Before that, museums were his refuge. “As a kid, I lived in a bad neighborhood near all the national museums in Washington, D.C., and life didn’t mean a lot there,” he says. He roamed all the museums, but had what he calls a religious experience at the National Gallery —a physical and emotional reaction to art that told him his life could have meaning.

The objects tell a story of where we’ve been. The paintings are set in the past, but their themes of creating a society and exploring new worlds through science and exploration resonate in the present. It took Adrian Martinez, a Curious Man himself, to pull it all together.

His paintings tell the tale of Chester County’s past and its people through interaction with Marshall—a botanist, astronomer, stonemason, and farmer. “He was known as a ‘Curious Man,’ as were Benjamin Franklin and

Jim Jones, Retired Professor of History, West Chester University

AU T HEN T IC : J I M jim jones spent his early years

roaming—living and working across Africa, Europe, and several states in the U.S. He hitchhiked across the Sahara three times. But when he landed here to teach history at West Chester University in 1992, he put down roots. He settled into a neighborhood just east of the University. After hearing a few old-timers call it Riggtown, he started digging into official records and talking to his new neighbors. He got to know the history of neighborhood and the borough, publishing two books about West Chester’s history and a detailed history of the neighborhood online. 14 figwestchester.com

JONES The outsider quickly became an insider. He became active in committees, the library, the Friends of Everhart Park, and the Bicentennial celebration, among others. “If there’s a job to be done, I’ll do it,” he says. He got involved in politics, leading to a run for borough council, where he served from 2008-2011, and started a second term in 2016. Serving on the council means he’s planning for West Chester’s future too—studying and voting on everything from a new business sign to new developments in business and housing. Jim guesses he’s knocked on every door in the borough at least three times. He’s

counted every parking space as part of his duties on the parking committee. Between teaching, study of West Chester’s history, and civic involvement, “I probably know more about the history of West Chester than anyone else,” he says, “although that’s mostly because I’ve outlived everyone who knew more than me.” He retired from teaching last May, but he has no plan to slow down. More books are in the works, and his current council term runs to 2020. He looks forward to more time for travel, but he’ll always come home to West Chester. “It was always a great place to live, but it keeps growing and getting better.”

CEO FOR A

DAY this is the story of a 12-year-old boy, who, with the help of the leaders in his community, realized he was extraordinary.

Patti Brennan, CEO of Key Financial, Inc. and board member of the YMCA of Brandywine Valley, handed her title over for a day to 12-year-old Wyatt, whom she met through a special program called Believe and Achieve. Dressed to impress with his name on the door and his own parking spot, the new CEO for the day shadowed Patti for a hands-on experience. Conquering memos, co-signing letters, and even granting vacation days, Wyatt got a real life understanding of leadership that just can’t be taught in a classroom. At the end, he left inspired with a new outlook of what his future could look like‌ and the belief that with the right choices, he can do anything he sets his sights on.

Valerie Jester, Active Philathropist

GI VING BACK : valerie hayes jester is a West

Chester native, and her roots go back generations. It’s where she lives and bases her business, Brandywine Capital Associates Inc. She grew up and went to school in the borough and has seen it change and grow. “I bought my first pet guinea pig at Woolworth’s 5 & 10 where Iron Hill is now,” she says with a laugh. Energetic and direct, Valerie is living proof of the saying “If you want to get things done, ask a busy person.” She’s a tireless worker for local causes. She’s volunteered 40 figwestchester.com

and/or sat on the boards of virtually every non-profit in town. “Volunteering gives me such a sense of connection and community,” she says. “I also get to spend time with my friends and make new ones as I do it.” One of her beloved projects is the annual West Chester Charity Ball, now in its 28th year. Valerie’s been involved since 1999, and helped it grow. “It’s become one of the largest single-event fundraisers in Chester County,” she says. In its early years, proceeds from the ball went to various charities benefiting women

and children in the greater West Chester area. But it now exclusively raises money —more than $180,000 this year—for the Friends Association for Care and Protection of Children. “My dear friend Glenda Brion partnered with me to bring the event to Friends Association, and it’s through that collaboration that the event has grown exponentially,” says Valerie. “I’ve been incredibly fortunate, and I’ve always thought it’s your job to give back,” she says. “But when I think about it all, I know I’ve gotten much more than I gave.”

TONO Architects and PROTO Construction reimagined this boutique jewelry store. By renovating and redesigning the storefront and creating custom casework, the design emphasized focal points throughout the space—encouraging customers to come inside.

TONO Architects worked with Virtua to develop a new vision for serving patient health and wellness. The design promoted centralized, collaborative spaces across practices and integrated innovative technology for patient service. The 25,000-square-foot project welcomes patients with a hospitality feel while strengthening Virtua’s brand as a worldclass quality health care provider.
