E V E RY S E A S O N T E L L S A S T O RY, inviting us to take part in its narrative and witness the lessons and gifts it humbly offers. Winter’s story is maybe the most complex—and rich—of all. Because Winter offers us both celebration and contemplation. The hustle and bustle of the holidays, and the time of reflection as the new year begins. The warmth of tradition and mirthful laughter, and the chill of evening walks in hushed stillness. It’s two opposites beautifully interwoven into one magical season. Maybe the Danish have it right, with their practice of “Hygge,” a state of peace, coziness, calm, and personal wholeness. They surround themselves with people and objects that embody this spirit. It’s possible that this significant season deserves an additional observance from us too.

Chester in all of its winter glory! Rediscover the joy of shopping small, and of giving intentionally to the people and causes that deserve it most.

In this issue, we celebrate, we contemplate, we hygge. From the holiday Gifting & Giving Guides that showcase our best retailers and nonprofits to our first ever GORGEOUS wedding spread, highlighting our town’s many event and wedding vendors, we present to you West

As 2017 comes to a close, join with us in celebrating our 25th issue, and over six years of loving local and designing for good in West Chester. Our forever-mission of telling the curated story of this town we love so much inspires us and keeps us pressing ahead. G R E T C H E N LU S BY AND THE FIG INDUSTRIES TEAM

F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to the Borough of West Chester Diane & Tom Strauss & George Zeppos Not pictured, Eleny Zeppos Co-Owners of Pure Fire Pizza

Fresh Face: Pure Fire Pizza P U R E F I R E P I Z Z A ’ S line moves fast, and no wonder—the 700˚F oven turns out pies in 90 seconds. Patrons come for the quality ingredients and variety of choices for personal pizzas, but also for the high energy level of the well-trained staff. That energy comes from the top down—owners Tom and Diane Strauss, and George and Eleny Zeppos are excited about their second location of this fast-casual concept on South High Street. When they decided to open in the borough, Tom immediately went to West Chester University’s

career development office to offer job opportunities to students. “It’s a great community, and we’re happy to be part of it and contribute to it,” says George. Tom and George come from different business backgrounds— George is a third-generation restaurateur who took a detour into finance before running two eateries near Reading with Eleny. Tom ran several successful outdoor adventure and equipment businesses. Diane came up with the Pure Fire business name. They’re also sticklers for detail. “We

want people to feel good after they eat at Pure Fire—we use local, sustainable, high-quality ingredients,” says Tom. George’s background in restaurants means his staff provides outstanding customer service while having fun at work. “That’s one of the most rewarding things about restaurants,” he says. “You can start working young, and with the right training and encouragement, you can have a great career—in this business or any other.” Find out more at purefirepizza.com

AUTHENTIC Leading the way through innovation and example.

Authentic: Karen Cavin T H E L I G H T S AT The 5 Senses glow onto Market Street as the early evening air chills, and owner Karen Cavin takes a moment to sit in her homey back office. It’s the calm before the hustle of holiday shopping begins, and she’s stocked, staffed, and ready. “This will be my thirteenth Christmas here,” she says. The 5 Senses is one of the older retail shops in the borough, and Karen has adapted as the retail climate has changed. She’s learned what sells better in West Chester and has adjusted her inventory to reflect these changes, such as filling her back room with a great selection of greeting cards. “First Pages closed, then Penwick,” Karen says. “People needed a place to buy cards!” She counts other small business owners in West Chester as colleagues and friends. “West Chester is a small community and we are happy to send customers to another shop that might have something specific that we do not sell. I really love working in West Chester with the other business owners because we are not in competition. It really is all about complementing each other.” She’s also passionate about the impact small businesses have on the local economy. “When you spend $100 at a locally-owned store, $63 is invested back into the community, versus only $43 when you spend the same amount at a big-box store,” she says. “In my own case, I have two employees, and add help during the holidays. All the artists whose work is featured in The 5 Senses have employees, so every sale goes toward helping others. That makes me happy.”

The Charles Dickens holiday classic comes to life as a live 1940s radio broadcast, complete with vintage commercials and the magic of live sound effects and musical underscoring. A handful of actors bring dozens of characters to the stage as the familiar story unfolds.

The hilarious musical is adapted from the Woody Allen movie about a young playwright in the 1920s whose first Broadway play is financed by a gangster. This classic Broadway musical received 6 Tony nominations and entertains audiences with its nods to jazz and popular World War I standards.

GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.

Giving Back: Jamie Jones “YOU DON’T HAVE TO GIVE a milliondollar endowment to make a difference in people’s lives,” says Jamie Jones. “Smaller actions, if you do them all the time, can add up to make a big difference.” Jamie, the second-generation owner and chief operating officer of Whirlaway Travel, was raised to be aware of the wider world around her—and to help better the lives of others. Locally, she supports the Kolbe Fund, which covers travel expenses for families of seriously ill children, and Christian’s Compassionate Mission, dedicated to ending suicide and erasing the stigma of mental illness.

40

That dedication is part of her business too. Whirlaway picks a different non-profit every month and hosts a lunch-and-learn event, matching donations. Jamie’s efforts aren’t only local. Travel is her life, and she says it’s the best way to understand other cultures. “The only way to understand how others live is to get out of your bubble,” she says. “We love to set our clients up with a local guide for one day, even if every other day is spent relaxing. It’s a safe way to get to know the area you’re visiting.” Jamie also supports Me to We, a social

enterprise promoting health, education, and economic development projects abroad. Its mission echoes Jamie’s love for Africa. “I’d always wanted to go, and when I got to Botswana in 2013, I just felt like I was home,” Jamie says. Whirlaway donates $100 for every trip to Africa booked in 2017 and 2018. “You can make a difference every day, if you take your blinders off and realize we’re all in this together,” Jamie says. “Give a part of yourself to someone else—there’s a lot of good people in the world.”

T H E G E N E R O S I T Y O F our community is part of our magic. The ways in which we all give of our time, talent, and resources is the golden thread that weaves our community together and connects each of us to the causes we deeply care about. Whether it’s our children and families, our education and health, or the richness of our arts, history, and culture, it’s all ours to cultivate, cherish, and make better for our future. In the following pages, you’ll find a number of local organizations doing important work in our community. At this most joyous time of year, we invite you to learn more about and support the causes that are meaningful to you. Because giving back is personal, it’s passionfilled, it’s deliberate. And it makes our community that much more magical.

F I G G I V E S B A C K At Fig, we believe in the power of a community that works together to find solutions and is passionate about helping its neighbors. Fig lifts up non-profits through our Social Mission Partnership, a program that awards organizations strengthening the fabric of our community with free advertising in each issue of Fig for one year. Since Fig West Chester’s inception in 2012, we have had the privilege of partnering with the following: Uptown! Entertainment Alliance, West Chester Food Cupboard, Safe Harbor of Chester County, The Charles A. Melton Arts and Education Center, West Chester Fire Departments, and Resident Theatre Company.

But when he gets sick, the only name you need to remember is Chester County Hospital. Accidents happen and children get sick all the time, usually on the weekends or in the middle of the night. When that happens, turn to Chester County Hospital, where pediatricians from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia are available in the Emergency Department to provide child-friendly care for your little one. Our long-standing affiliation with CHOP also provides our smallest patients with a dedicated pediatric inpatient unit staffed by CHOP Pediatricians and the only Level III NICU in the county.

S M AL L T H I N G S M A K E A B I G D I F F E R E N C E . NEWBORN & PEDIATRIC CARE AT CHESTER COUNTY HOSPITAL Emergency hospital visits can be frightening for children and parents alike. In our Emergency Department, we are uniquely prepared to provide for the special needs of children and families, thanks to our affiliation with The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), a world leader in pediatric and neonatal medicine. Our innovative program combines the extensive resources of CHOP with the caring, experienced staff and excellent facilities of Chester County Hospital. Child-Friendly Emergency Department Within our Emergency Department, you’ll find pediatric-sized equipment, instruments and medical supplies — from tiny hospital gowns to pint-sized examination areas to happy diversions for children including games, tablets and a collection of family-favorite DVDs. The CHOP pediatricians who work in our hospital’s inpatient Pediatrics Unit attend to your child’s immediate needs in our Emergency Department, and provide continuity of care for children who may need to be admitted for observation or treatment. Your CHOP inpatient pediatrician will also communicate seamlessly with your child’s own primary care physician. CHOP Newborn Care & Pediatric Care Because our inpatient pediatricians and neonatologists are all on staff at CHOP, we’re able to bring a world-renowned level of expertise and care to our youngest patients. Newborn and Pediatric services include a dedicated Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) – the only one in Chester County – for our newborns who need specialized care. CHOP Pediatric Care at Chester County Hospital is a joint pediatric service of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Chester County Hospital.
