M O V I N G B A C K to Bethlehem four years ago was an enlightening experience for me. After years in Boston, I returned to my college town and saw it with fresh, new eyes. New businesses were mixed in with old favorites, a creative food & drink renaissance was underway, and an already-burgeoning list of cultural opportunities seemed to have multiplied exponentially. This was still my beloved Bethlehem, but it had evolved, had grown with the times. What a joy it was to get to know the city I love for the second time! From storefront to stage, from Greenway to gallery, Bethlehem invites anyone ready to discover (or re-discover!) all this city has to offer. Our city hosts events, festivals, and happenings year-round, for experience-seekers of every persuasion: foodies, artists, entrepreneurs, storytellers, travelers, activists, philanthropists, creatives, and eclectics. There is no shortage of experiences to be had here, and at Fig, we are proud to showcase them for you in each issue. For the past three years, Fig’s mission has been to tell the story of this vibrant, culturally rich city. On the following pages, you’ll discover people and places who are sure to be a vital part of your next Bethlehem

experience, and you’ll learn about many of the wonderful events that take place here. Turn to the center spread for a full calendar of events and happenings. We suggest you remove it and keep it handy all year long! This is my first issue as Director of Fig, and I’m proud and honored to serve Bethlehem in this role. I see it as a responsibility to represent Bethlehem’s unique character—to those who have never visited, to those who’ve lived here for years, and everyone in between. As a reader of Fig, I fell in love with Bethlehem all over again. Now, as Director, I get to help you do the same. Happy Reading! KIERA WILHELM & THE FIG INDUSTRIES TEAM
AUTHENTIC Leading the way through innovation and example.
Authentic: Daniel Roebuck W H E N D A N I E L R O E B U C K WA S S I X , he decided he was going to be on TV. At 22, he landed a role on Matlock. He’d go on to appear in many shows and films over the years, including The Fugitive, Lost— and, most recently—The Man in the High Castle. “I think at 6,” Daniel says, “God gave me the opportunity to see what I would be doing for the rest of my life, so all I had to do was make decisions from 6 to 22 that put me on TV.” Daniel also tried his hand at ventriloquism, circus clowning, magic, stand-up comedy, and of course, drama. “Once I found the theater,” he says, “I never left.” Daniel’s heart also never left Bethlehem. A graduate of Bethlehem Catholic, he grew up in St. Anne’s Parish on the North Side of the city. “There’s no place like it on earth,” he says. “All my dreams were born in Bethlehem—that I’m fulfilling them here is an extraordinary blessing to me.” Daniel’s referring to the independent film he co-wrote, directed, produced, and shot in the Lehigh Valley, called Getting Grace—an endearing tragicomedy about a young girl with cancer who goes to a funeral home to find out what happens after she dies, and ends up teaching the funeral director, played by Danny himself, how to live. “The movie is a love letter to the Lehigh Valley,” Daniel says. “My dream is to come back here again and again and use the Lehigh Valley as my muse.” To see what Daniel has been up to lately, visit gettinggracethemovie.com.

FIG VOICES New sounds of our City in partnership with Lehigh Valley Underground.
Voices: Gerard Longo M E E T G E R A R D LO N G O, T H E V O I C E O F F I G V O I C E S — a new, recurring editorial featuring artist profiles, festivals and shows, and, most importantly, pieces that put the emphasis on local music and the people who make it. Gerard is the Founder/Editor-in-Chief of Lehigh Valley Underground—a local entertainment website highlighting the music scene in the Lehigh Valley and beyond. The site includes insightful articles, podcasts, and other multimedia created to bring attention to the local music scene not only for the people within it but for those who have yet to discover the wonders of original music here. It had its origins in the Dominic & The Quinn Radio Show Gerard ran with his brother at Moravian College. After graduation, Gerard kept an updated version of the show—renamed The Quinn Spinn—alive while working in corporate America, until he could get back to the Valley. “The Lehigh Valley music scene needs connectors, unifiers,” says Gerard, “and I think Lehigh Valley Underground is in a position to do that.” But Gerard recognizes that there has to be authenticity in everything you do, which is why it’s important for him to be an actual citizen of the music community. And it’s working: Lehigh Valley Underground has been nominated for eight Lehigh Valley Music Awards so far. “We want to serve as a platform to raise up local music,” Gerard says, “to raise everybody up. The more we succeed in doing that, the more everyone succeeds.” We think he’s in a position to do just that. Welcome to Fig, Gerard! To learn more, visit lehighvalleyunderground.com.

LEHIGH UNIVERSITY ART GALLERIES TE ACHING MUSEUM LUAG strives to further the Lehigh University’s educational and cultural mission: to advance learning through the integration of teaching, research, and service to others. LUAG’s core educational resource is its Teaching Collection, which it uses, along with traveling exhibitions from outside the University, to create settings for experiential learning—a visual laboratory in which students and faculty have direct experiences of works of art and cultural materials. Through first-hand observation, students develop skills to respond critically to works of art and the cultural institutions that frame them. LUAG refers to itself as a “museum-without-walls”, extending throughout three campuses in the form of galleries, classrooms, outdoor sculpture, and open-storage for its Teaching Collection. In this way, LUAG seeks to integrate visual literacy with the daily experience of the Lehigh community.
Take a leisurely stroll through an art gallery, enjoy some live music, or try out your acting skills and be a part of the show yourself— these are just a few ways in which Bethlehem invites you to be a part of its vibrant arts scene. Musical, artistic, and cultural opportunities abound and take place all over the city, all year round. It’s easy to fill your calendar with the unique, inspiring, and innovative cultural experiences Bethlehem has to offer!
