A NOTE FROM FIG

Celebrating small town hospitality. C A N I T E L L YO U what I love most about Kennett Square? The small town hospitality that lingers everywhere you go. I can walk into Talula’s and find that someone will make room at their table for me to work. Or be greeted at Marché with a big smile and a question about how my family is doing. You won’t find a kinder or friendlier staff than at The Country Butcher. This is why I have really enjoyed curating this, our hospitality-themed issue. In this issue, we’re showcasing the best that Kennett Square brings to the table—both around town and in the home. Whether you need a caterer for a party or want to design a custom piece of furniture that makes your home unique, it’s all here.

At Fig, we believe in the power of creative communication to give voice and vision to this town that we love. We are a lookbook that creatively highlights the people and businesses that make Kennett Square so special. We hope you enjoy this Spring issue which tells a story of our welcoming and talented community. As always, I consider it a privilege to work with the business owners and community leaders you’ll find among these pages. Cheers, BRIANNA CARLISLE & THE FIG INDUSTRIES TEAM

F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to Kennett Square.

Deanna Johnson & Liz Carter, Founders

Fresh Face: Marché S T E P P I N G I N T O Marché is like visiting a good friend’s home—a friend who happens to have exquisite taste. “One of our biggest compliments is when people say, ‘It feels really good in here...” says Deanna Johnson, who co-founded the store with Liz Carter. “They know something is happening here, and they want us to make it happen for them, too.” The concept of the new lifestyle goods boutique is completely unique to Kennett Square. Marché carries furniture, linens, home décor,

women’s clothing, and accessories. The owners see Marché as a place of discovery, where customers will encounter fresh, beautiful items. In this boutique setting, shoppers can expect a personalized experience. Liz says that she and Deanna enjoy helping customers step out of their comfort zone and discover new styles among the attainable selection of comfortably elegant and effortless clothing. On the home side, the merchants strive to curate a selection of eclectic goods sure to inspire any shopper.

Deanna, an interior designer, lends her expertise to help customers find just the right pieces for their home. “We hope we can touch everyone’s life in some way,” Deanna says. In addition to the seasonally inspired assortment of home décor and furnishings, Marché will soon offer a design resource center to suit even the most specific tastes. The studio will facilitate the needs of home owners with interior design services and custom order items as well as sales to the trades for local interior design professionals.

AUTHENTIC Creating authentic community in Kennett Square. Dan & Dorothy Boxler, Owners

Authentic: Country Butcher WHEN DAN AND DOROTHY Boxler opened up the Country Butcher in 1982, they knew that they wanted to create a business of high-quality food items. Little did they know that they were also creating a community. The Country Butcher carries prime cuts of meat, prepared foods, gourmet dry goods, artisan cheeses, and pastry items in the sit-down café. The store leads you from one culinary experience to the next. One customer compared it to “the Tiffany’s of the food market.” But it’s not just food that makes their

14

customers so loyal; it’s also relationship. Creating a kind, welcoming environment has always been a top priority. “People come into the store and feel that they are a part of it,” says Dan. Dan and Dorothy opened the store one month after their wedding, 35 years ago. They’ve always strived to keep a good work-life balance, maintaining hours that were conducive to giving them quality time as they raised their two sons, and now as they pursue their artistic interests. Dorothy is a painter, and Dan welds sculptures from found objects.

Over the years, the Boxlers have resisted the pressure all retailers feel to be open more hours. “You can’t have money make all your decisions for you,” says Dan. This benefits not only them, but also their employees. Their customers have shown great support of the Boxlers, not only professionally, but also personally. “Customers feel the warmth,” says Dorothy, “but we do, too. It’s reciprocated.” But then, that’s what community is.

CHESTER COUNTY STUDIO TOUR invites art enthusiasts to experience and meet 179 local artists as they exhibit their work during this two-day open studio event in May. This intimate opportunity only happens once a year. Take advantage of unlimited access to working artists inside their studios, and develop a clearer understanding of their story and creative process. Purchase a new

piece for your collection, or simply admire the behind the scenes look at the artist’s life and process. Learn more about each artist and plan your route among the rolling hills of Chester County. When you arrive at each destination, don’t bother knocking; just come in and be delighted by the creativity found behind each door. Below is just a small sampling of the artistry you will find.

Follow your passion A D V I C E O F T E N H E A R D though rarely followed. But Greg Pilotti did just that. In his fourth year of college, he discovered his true passion—furniture making—and shifted gears entirely. He scrapped a degree in architecture to become a trained furniture maker.

He’s been steadily growing the business and recruiting skilled craftsmen to join his team since. Pilotti’s crew of young, yet experienced craftsmen are passionate about producing the highest quality custom furniture. Simply put, they love what they do.

Four years ago, while completing his education in the trade, he opened his own shop, Greg Pilotti Furniture Makers.

The shop offers personal service throughout the custom design process with in-house design and drawing.

The scope of work includes custom kitchen cabinetry, built-in cabinetry, custom furniture and reproduction pieces. Every piece is personally built by one craftsman with locally sourced materials. “We still use our hands and traditional furniture making techniques,” Pilotti says. “We have great respect for the craft.”
