taking the lead WHEN MY CREATIVE DIRECTOR tasked me with creating this issue, she posed the question, “What is something special you see happening in Kennett Square?” It was an easy answer. I told her that more than ever, I see women stepping up, leading and investing in this town. And beyond that, I see them collaborating for the greater good.

And thus, this issue was born. We’re calling it “The Female Influencers” issue. It’s a collection of portraits and inspiring stories from local women making important things happen in our community. They are quite literally influencing the values of Kennett Square through collaboration, encouragement, and opportunity. Keep in mind, this is certainly not a complete list. I could have filled a hundred pages with the compelling stories of leadership and service that women across all genres are forging in our town. But, I hope you see the next few pages as a small sampling of them. You’ll find entrepreneurs, community builders, restaurateurs, artists and public office holders. You’ll read about their passions, their histories, and the risks they took to be where they are

now. And best of all, you’ll hear them cheering each other on. From heartfelt donations of food or time, to bold investments in art, culture, and the economy, every unique gift is woven into this fabric we call home. At Fig, we are so much more than a magazine. Giving Back: Karen DiMascola & Sarah Nurry THE VICTORY MUSHROOM CAP HALF MARATHON was born on the sidelines of a lacrosse game as fellow moms and long-distance runners Karen DiMascola and Sarah Nurry envisioned a race that would showcase the beauty and community spirit of their hometown. Such dreams often drift away on the tide of daily demands, but Nurry said, “Let’s do it!”

and Nurry, a former executive and mother of four, have learned a lot—about everything from the running industry and race logistics to generating revenue. It’s a labor of love, and they’re grateful for the generosity of Victory and other local businesses and for the support of their families, community members, “including lots of women,” and organizations like the Kennett Run and Bike Kennett.

The idea gathered momentum as they connected with local influencers and businesses, established the non-profit Run2Shine, and began building a team. DiMascola, a teacher and mother of two,

They decided from the start that the beneficiaries would be local families in need. In the first two years they’ve supported Family Promise, the Garage, the Grayson Saves Foundation, the

Weekly Fight, and Kennett Education Foundation. Building on the success of this year’s relay option, they plan to broaden participation further with a charity one-miler. The course takes runners over cobblestone sidewalks and past historic Victorian homes, through early-morning mist to the breathtaking rolling hills of horse country. At each of the 13 sponsored aid stations along the way, runners enjoy spirited encouragement. Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Longwood Gardens brought her across the state and through a diversity of work and volunteering—from human services and academia to arts, culture, and tourism. “Every step,” she says, “brought me closer to what I do today. I feel incredibly fortunate to get to market one of the great gardens of the world...right here in Kennett Square!” Conley also dedicates time and expertise to regional and industry initiatives like America’s Garden Capital, Seed Your Future, Historic Kennett Square, and the Chester County Economic Development Council. She’s been encouraged to see so many positive changes in Kennett Square “because of the passionate people who are nurturing our community’s future while respecting what’s been done in the past.” Like many women, Conley juggles career and family responsibilities. A friend once asked her how she “does it all.” “After I stopped laughing,” she says, “I explained that ‘I do what I can.’ Everyone struggles no matter what the outward appearance otherwise suggests. We need to support one another.” In Kennett Square, she’s delighted to find that through “a wildly supportive, driven, and creative community of women.”

S I N C E 1 9 8 6 , Historic Kennett Square has been pursuing

its mission to enhance the vitality of the area. Mary Hutchins, HKS Executive Director, was hired part-time 18 years ago. The nonprofit has grown exponentially since, and today, three full-time and three part-time employees, along with a volunteer board of directors and several committees, work tirelessly to keep Kennett Square vibrant. Claire Murray, Main Street Manager, oversees HKS marketing and events. She cites Third Thursday as an example of the Kennett spirit and “the community building that happens when neighbors and visitors can unplug and socialize in the charming, family-friendly outdoor setting of main street Kennett Square.” Hutchins and Murray describe themselves as “facilitators for success,” working “to make Kennett the best community it can be.” And they always welcome volunteers to join them. Hutchins, the mother of three daughters, said she is proud to be part of a community where the majority of the businesses are owned by women, the majority of the nonprofits in the area are run by women and Kennett Square Borough Council just elected its first women president. Both women agree that Kennett Square has a lot of heart, and they attribute much of this to the women trailblazers. As Hutchins says, “women make the town go ’round.”

Arts, has been finding joy and pursuing her passion for dance here since she was two years old. She returned to teach after college, and when the previous owner retired and approached Philipp about taking over, she found it “an easy decision to make.” Longwood Performing Arts, Philipp says, has had “a profound effect on my childhood and my career path.” For the past three years, Philipp has been continuing the longstanding traditions of the studio, “to not only teach dance technique, but also to build confidence, inspire creativity, and give students a community where they can create lasting memories.” One of her dreams is to bring dance to children who, due to various restrictions, “may not have otherwise been exposed to the arts.” Philipp sees female leaders in our community “setting a strong example for younger generations and encouraging them to pursue their goals,” and she encourages all women to “have the courage and conviction to stick to your decisions and principles.”

As she visited different places, both stateside and abroad, she says, “I started to feel that everywhere we went, I saw the same lines and looks.” So she began her quest to find interesting and emerging designers who weren’t well-known.

She found what she was looking for, and with the support of her family, she opened No. 109 to bring unique clothes and accessories to Kennett Square. The shop is celebrating its third year of offering customers “beautifully edited fashion.” She works hard to keep her boutique personal and welcoming. “It’s something the internet just can’t do!” she says. Heather says she wants to help women feel beautiful, and it brings a smile to her face when she thinks of all of the amazing women in Kennett Square. “I love how we’re all different, and I think it’s exciting to look that way, too.”

days, Shannon Blake knew she had a “now or never” opportunity to pursue a life-long dream. So she took a leap of faith and left her successful career at URBN to open Penny Lane Emporium. Penny Lane offers a fresh take on kids’ retail and an amusing shopping experience with a curated collection of quality apparel and unique and whimsical products for kids from newborns to tweens. Blake is also launching a new event space for kids. The Alley @ Penny Lane, located in the back of the shop, will host workshops, parties, yoga, and more. This “safe, fun and creative atmosphere where kids can learn and play” will provide a light-hearted and lively hub for all things kids in the community. “Know that you can start late, look different, be uncertain, and still succeed” are words that inspire and empower Blake as she begins this new chapter. Change can be a catalyst for wonderful things, she says, “if you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone.”

D E A N N A J O H N S O N brought a breath of

fresh style to Kennett Square where she and her family relocated in 2011. Johnson’s warmth and love for hospitality stem from her traditional South Carolinian roots; her exquisite design sense has been shaped by her extensive experience in both event planning and interior design, as well as by her many years on the West Coast. Her work has been featured in various magazines, and her highprofile clients have included the Salt Lake City Olympic committee and Nordstrom. As an interior designer and co-founder and owner of Marché, Johnson takes pride in getting to know her customers and their lifestyles. She enjoys helping each person to feel both comfortable and inspired to step outside their comfort zone to try something new. Marché’s curated and eclectic collection offers something for everyone, from comfortably elegant and effortless clothing and accessories to unique and beautiful pieces for the home. Through her design services, Deanna Johnson Interiors, she “creates livable spaces with an understated elegance, chasing quality and unique finds for clients.” Johnson loves being part of the vibrant community of talented and creative small business owners in Kennett Square.

Salon, says her mission is simply to keep the charm of a small-town family shop alive in Kennett. She wants “everyone who walks through my doors to feel like we’ve known each other for years.” Hauer, who bought Artistic Edge when she was just 22 years old, has deep roots in the Kennett area. Her family owns Basciani Mushroom Farms. She’s passionate about helping clients achieve their desired look, as well as being mindful of the environment. Although being green requires extra time and effort, Artistic Edge officially became a Green Circle Salon this year. As a mom of three young daughters, Hauer says she feels empowered to see all the female-owned businesses in Historic Downtown, knowing the hard work that is required. “We’ve all taken risks to get here,” she notes, “It’s only failure if you didn’t try.” Despite her entrepreneurial success, Hauer says she hopes her legacy is more about her role as mother, wife, and daughter. “I chose this job to make people feel beautiful on the inside—the outside is a bonus.”

E L I Z A B E T H M O R O brings her diverse

experience as a businesswoman, environmentalist, and mother to each new challenge. She’s spent much of her career in real estate, and she’s been a strong voice over the years for land conservation, working class issues, and women and families. Growing up in a large and hospitable family, Moro learned that “there’s always room for everyone at the table.” She extends that concept to her advocacy work in the community, as well as to her campaign as a democratic candidate for U.S. Congress in the 7th district. Everyone’s ideas and perspectives are important, she says, and she wants to listen and invite people into the conversation. She's passionate about strengthening the local economy, protecting our environment, and providing access to quality education and healthcare. Elizabeth hopes to inspire women to achieve their dreams and champion causes they care about. “Women have unique networking skills and bring a different perspective to the table,” Moro says. She applauds all the female leaders in Kennett Square who are paving the path for other women and giving back to their community.

for Lori Amway and Rhonda Thorpe when the office supply company where they worked closed their Kennett Square branch. The two women took a leap of faith through that door, opened Kennett Copy & More, and haven’t looked back. “It’s important to us,” they say, “to provide a store with items and services that home-based businesses, small businesses, and the huge art community are in need of.” It’s also important to them to provide the kind of personal service that is often lost in our fast-paced, technology-centric world. At Kennett Copy & More, Amway and Thorpe like to get to know their customers, and their customers get to know them, too. “Together,” they say, “women-owned businesses are bringing back the small-town feel to Kennett Square,” and they encourage others to believe in themselves and to take chances.

Authentic: Aimee Olexy AIMEE OLEXY HAS BEEN CREDITED with putting Kennett Square on the map as a destination for people who love good food. More than that, however, Olexy and her team at Talula’s Table have spent 12 years building community through food. Instinct brought Olexy back to Southern Chester County, closer to her mother and to the place of her fondest childhood memories, when she was about to become a mother herself. Walking through Kennett Square, she felt something stir. She loved its history, agriculture, and people. She saw its “eclectic potential”

and wanted to give the town a soul, a heart of warmth and comfort.

Olexy is constantly rethinking how to infuse new ideas so that Talula’s “feels fresh in comfort.” Olexy describes Talula’s Table as the mothership for all of her other businesses in Philadelphia, including The Love, newly opened near Rittenhouse Square and Talula's Garden and Talula's Daily on Washington Square. She’s learned so much from the passionate and creative people who have become her extended family in Kennett Square. “I want to carry the small-town charm and sweetness into the city,” she says.

began working at the newly opened Salon Secrets Spa. “It’s kind of funny to look back,” she says. “I had no fashion sense, and I didn’t know much about the industry.” Lahn grew up at the salon and even met her husband, who was a client, there. Nearly 20 years later, in 2012, she purchased the business and began redeveloping the brand. Lahn is passionate about caring for guests and mentoring the 30 women who work for her so they can grow in their skills and become leaders themselves. “We’re unique in the salon industry for not paying commission to employees,” she says. “This takes away the ‘me and my client’ mentality and cultivates ‘we and our guest’ customer service.” Guests at Salon Secrets have an entire beauty team at their disposal, she says, at times that fit their schedules best. “I want to provide a haven where people feel good about themselves and cared for,” Lahn says.

In 1990, her husband opened an auto body shop on Birch Street. Soon after, she left her job in real estate to help him out. In 1995, they purchased and renovated their current location on West Cypress Street. When her husband retired in 2013, he encouraged her to continue the business. “I knew if I took it on I’d have to do it my way,” she says. Today, Allison stands out as one of the few females to run a dealership like this in the country and is proud to staff Bavarian Motorsport equally with men and women. Allison notes that continuing education and mentorship keep her focused, as well as giving back to Kennett in meaningful ways. In summarizing her vision for the business she says, “I want to operate a great business that contributes to the community.” Bavarian Motorsport is active with The Kennett Run and the Victory Food Truck Festival, among others. It’s an attitude of serving others by example that she strives to model for her four daughters—that, and to “never stop learning new things.”

As President of the Borough Council, she’s focused on ensuring open, responsive, and inclusive government and on working towards a unified and diverse community. In her career as a public health advocate, she’s dedicated to improving the health of vulnerable people. She brings her education and professional expertise to these roles, in addition to her experiences of being a woman of color who has faced similar obstacles. Myers’ dream of women and men of many backgrounds and ages building our flourishing community together will be realized in part as we invest in people, including many young Black and Latina women, “who see things from a fresh perspective and are driven to make positive change.”

When Grebloskie and her husband moved to Kennett Square in 2002, they volunteered for the Kennett Brewfest and she joined Historic Kennett Square’s special events committee. As she became more involved, she was appointed to the HKS board of directors and spearheaded fundraising and special events efforts. She served as the HKS president in 2016 and 2017. “It’s important to me to raise a family in a vibrant cultural community,” she says, “where everyone has access to resources – from community assistance programs to local establishments and recreational areas where they can enjoy their free time.”

This “pair of docs” began Paradocx Vineyard, with the mission “to be good stewards of the land and create a relaxing and familyfriendly environment for all to learn the joy of wine.” Starting the business involved financial risk, but on a much deeper level, Harris says, “we took the risk of trusting in a long-term partnership. It is a similar commitment to a marriage.” As their vines were cultivated, so was their relationship. With the addition of staff and loyal patrons, the Paradocx Family continues to grow. Hoffman, who’s an ophthalmologist, says, “Eye surgery has many similarities to a successful business and making great wine in terms of attention to detail and making sure all of the pre-work is done well to have an excellent result.” With the right “mindset, determination, and some grit,” Harris says, anything is possible. Both women encourage others to “follow your gut—it’s usually right!”
