City of
Lancaster The Experience Issue
MEET EVE One morning, the canyons were calling—and Eve answered. On a westward journey, she found not just herself but also a love for nature. And although she wanders, she’s never lost—and never loses sight of what she longs for. She’s bright like the beating sun, but plays it cool like the Sedona sunset. And, she’s transformed Cork Factory Hotel into the wedding space of her dreams.

F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to the City of Lancaster. Chad Harnish, Owner, M Street
Fresh Face: M Street I N T H I S H I G H -T E C H , digital age, the future is always just seconds away. What’s cutting edge today is already on its way to being obsolete tomorrow. This is why so many businesses, organizations, and non profit organizations are turning to data-science as a way of ensuring that their content and messaging is seen, and making a real impact. Chad Harnish, the owner of Lancaster’s software/web design agency M Street, is intent on helping clients do just that. Chad began his career creating websites at Lancaster ad agency Kelly Michener. His personal electronic music site [PS] Progressive-Sounds.com, for which he was paid in vinyl records, received over one hundred thousand visitors a month in the pre-Facebook age. Since then, Chad has turned his sights to personally customized, data-driven web and software design through M Street. The agency’s agile team uses data-science to meet the changing needs of each client.
Chad is the founder of Visit Lancaster PA, and is an active member of Lancaster’s photography community. Check out his work on Instagram (@chadharnish and @visitlancasterpa), and go see his art, which will be displayed at The Framing Concept in April.
In addition to beautiful, user-friendly sites and interfaces, M Street specializes in application development, websites, and online marketing, using custom software to collect and analyze data. This fuels better search engine optimization (SEO) and link building, thoughtful content creation, and a better return on investment for the client. Chad’s mantra is “you get what you work for.” He puts this into action in his business by helping clients work toward measurable goals. Knowledge is power, and M Street harnesses it to provide clients with ongoing data regarding demographics, audience, and reach. Chad and M Street plan to continue to provide data-science solutions in today's changing marketplace. To learn more, visit mstreetdesign.com. 233 NORTH DUKE STREET

The Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster team.
G L O B A L C E I L I N G S C O M PA N Y Armstrong World Industries (AWI) and its philanthropic arm, the Armstrong World Industries Foundation (AWIF), are coming together to help support the renovations of two Boys & Girls Club (BGC) locations in Lancaster City. Starting with the renovation of the Water Street clubhouse that serves well over 1,000 kids, the foundation has committed funding and the company is providing in-kind product and design services in the form of ceiling solutions that both look great and deliver acoustical performance.
22
AWI & AWIF will also be supporting the renovation of a new Boys & Girls Club location on South Duke scheduled to get underway later this year.

D I D YO U K N O W… Armstrong acoustical ceilings help control sound both within a room and from room to room? That means in classrooms, children can hear better, so they learn better and faster. In hospitals, patients enjoy a quieter environment, which helps them heal more quickly.
CHECK OUT FIG'S BLOG TO KEEP UP T O D AT E O N T H E R E N O VAT I O N S
B OY S & G I R L S C L U B of Lancaster CEO Karen Schloer (pictured center left) said, “The renovation of our Water Street club is almost complete except for a critical element… acoustical ceilings! The re-opened space is much safer and the layout is more practical for the many activities the kids take part in. However, when the house is full, it’s loud! It makes communication more difficult, particularly in the afternoons when we’re helping the kids with school work, and in general, it can feel chaotic. In collaborating with the Armstrong Ceilings team, I’ve learned that acoustical ceilings, by better managing sound quality, will really make a difference in how our kids and staff are able to interact and feel. Plus, on top of the performance, the actual ceiling design will lend some pizazz to the rooms and help create an environment that feels inspiring and kid-friendly.”
In restaurants and bars, patrons are less bothered by ambient sound, which invites conversation. Better acoustics through ceilings solutions is just one way employees at Armstrong World Industries are making a real difference in how people live, work, learn, heal, and play. To learn more, visit armstrongceilings.com/ totalacoustics Armstrong World Industries, headquartered in Lancaster County for over 105 years, is now a standalone global leader in the design and manufacture of ceilings solutions. AWI created the Armstrong World Industries Foundation in 1985 for the sole purpose of “giving back” to Lancaster and other communities where the company has employees and operations. Since then, the foundation has contributed well over $50M to charity.

AUTHENTIC Leading the way through innovation and example. Dr. Damaris Rau, Superintendent of the School District of Lancaster
Authentic: Dr. Rau T H E A U T H E N T I C I T Y that Dr. Rau brings to her work for the School District of Lancaster is her drive to pay it forward. Growing up in foster care, Dr. Rau credits the high expectations of strong female role models for pushing her to achieve an advanced education. That drive continued through her work as a teacher, compelling her to broaden her influence in order to encompass more and more students. Now, as the Superintendent of SDoL, Dr. Rau serves and advocates for a student body of 11,300. “I get the deep impression that what’s different about SDoL is the support in the community for the schools.
From the businesses to the families to the churches, the community believes in and supports the children.” A forward thinker, Dr. Rau shared her vision for SDoL: the school district is united in their focus on 21st century skills, taking learning beyond content to include communication, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. To help students become more competitive academically, SDoL is actively raising the standards of good instruction, increasing rigor and expectations for student achievement. Dr. Rau is committed to providing the dedicated teachers on her staff opportunities to take leadership roles without leaving
the classroom. Cognizant of the whole child, SDoL is also focusing on emotional learning. Students are being guided as members of restorative circles, developing a mindset of peacemaking. When asked what’s next, Dr. Rau would like to see the community step into more mentorship roles with the public school students of Lancaster. She envisions business leaders in the community taking a more active role in encouraging students to go to college and showing them a model for the success they are capable of achieving. empathy. entrepreneurship. Progressive education based in community partnerships. Learning by doing in an environment where every action, from stewardship of the building to organic gardening to coding with local tech companies, is curricular. These are not typically things you think of when you look at a high school curriculum. But these are the tenets of The Stone Independent School. The Stone Independent School began when a group of educators, concerned with the way standardized tests were holding teaching hostage and hindering students’
critical thinking, reimagined what a school could be. They designed a new kind of school, one that’s as creative and vibrant as the City in which it resides, one that reflects the same values of the makers, builders, entrepreneurs, and community organizers who make Lancaster thrive. The curriculum at Stone does not confine students to the walls of their classroom—or even their campus. With a four-year entrepreneurship program and a commitment to social justice, the students at Stone will see Lancaster City as their true classroom. And with Stone’s scaffolded global
education program, they’ll see the world that way too. Graduates of The Stone Independent School will be collaborators, creative thinkers, and problem solvers—the kind of lifelong learners who are difference makers on college campuses and in their communities. And it all begins this Fall at the new progressive school in downtown Lancaster that believes everyone learns best by doing. To find out more about the philosophy behind The Stone Independent School and about enrollment opportunities for fall, contact info@stoneindependent.org.

Left to Right: Sisters Ella '20, Eloise '23, Ava '18, and Vienne '21
college-preparatory for grades 6-12
as a student at linden hall... What makes Linden Hall different? Ava: At Linden Hall, everyone is always building each other up and using one another to challenge themselves and grow to become their best. It is a culture where learning is everything—whether it be in the classroom or on the sports field. It's a place where you can truly meet the world, without taking a single step off campus. It is home.
What about Linden Hall makes learning exciting? Ava: Here, everyone is excited to learn. We learn from our teachers, from our textbooks, from our experiences, but most importantly, from each other. It is through working together and facing challenges and new ideas as a community that we truly thrive.
What would you tell another student who is thinking about attending Linden Hall? Ava: If you want to grow, challenge yourself, meet the world, become a leader, and find your voice, Linden Hall is where you belong. For me, Linden Hall is like a family that is always lifting you up and giving you the tools to succeed. A Linden Hall girl is smart, kind, well-rounded, compassionate, curious, fun, and extraordinary in her own way.

Noah & Christian
At the Susquehanna Waldorf School, we add music and art to science, math, and English to help our students reach a deeper understanding of their relative concepts. Multiply this advanced comprehension with daily hands-on experiences and you’ve got an equation that’s paying off. "...the art of awakening what is actually there within the human being”
rudolf steiner
as a student at the susquehanna waldorf school... What about your school makes learning exciting? Noah: Every year my class and teacher stay together, which makes learning more exciting because it feels like we are all on a journey together.
What makes Susquehanna Waldorf School different? Christian: We go on so many interesting field trips. This year in 8th grade we are traveling to New Hampshire for a week as a class. In 6th grade we spent 4 days in NYC, visiting museums and seeing the sights.
How do you learn best? Noah: I learn best by doing and actually experiencing things. We have lots of opportunities to learn from experience. For example, we went to Heritage Creek Farm Camp several times and learned how to maintain a garden and take care of animals by doing farm work. We then opened a farm stand at the school and sold the produce we harvested as part of our business math studies.

questions come very early in a student’s college career. James’ first semester seminar “Big Theological Questions,” prompted him to think about his own very personal spiritual journey and then to declare a major in Interfaith Leadership Studies. Interfaith Studies is quickly gaining international attention and explores how religion, politics, and everyday life come together and add perspective to how we view the world, which is increasingly important in global politics. Elizabethtown College has a rich history of encouraging our students to consider the bigger world around them and to be a bigger part of the world.

one of a kind
Our goal is to help students with learning differences unlock their potential. Each time a new student walks through The Janus School's doors, we attend to his or her distinct learning style. Your child can make a fresh start at a school where, at last, teachers fully understand and attend to their needs with a personalized, individual program.
as a student at the janus school... What makes you proud to be a student at The Janus School? I'm proud to be at Janus because I have a learning disability but I'm pushing myself to learn. And I want to show people that just because I learn “differently” doesn't mean I can’t be successful.
How do you learn best (by hands-on experiences, in a group, projects, experimenting, etc)? Can you give an example? I learn best by hands-on activities, by physically doing what I am taking in. The first year I was at Janus, I had no idea what maple sugaring was or how to do it. Last year, I got to experience tapping the trees and boiling the sap into syrup. Now, coming back to maple sugaring season, I feel like an expert.
What makes your school different? The teachers definitely make school different. The teachers care so much about the students, not just their grades but how the student is feeling. Students at The Janus School give the school character. Kids at Janus have so many different interests, we learn something new from each other every day. Once you're part of Janus, it's like you have a whole new family.

illuminates a lifetime. Isaac & Andrew
as a student at lancaster country day school... What makes Lancaster Country Day School different? Isaac: The community that I am surrounded by is what makes my school unique. I receive the individual attention I need, but I also receive extra challenges and I’m pushed by my teachers. I go to school in a caring, nurturing environment that helps me grow as a person every day.
How do your teachers help you when you have trouble? Andrew: Throughout my senior year, I have juggled many commitments, such as college applications, sports, and co-leading the Diversity Council. All my teachers have been more than understanding when I have to miss class or cannot do a homework assignment. They help me get any work I missed and allow me to extend the due date on some of my assignments to help relieve stress.
What would you tell another student who is thinking about attending Lancaster Country Day School? Isaac: Be ready for a challenge, but most of all, be ready to grow and develop into a student who is ready for college. This school will challenge you, but know that every task that is given to you will be worth it once you graduate. I can honestly say that I would never have been accepted into the prestigious school I love if it weren’t for Lancaster Country Day School. 725 HAMILTON ROAD, L ANCASTER 717.392.2916 L ANCASTERCOUNTRYDAY.ORG

This year’s design was created by Garrett Foreman, Kenhorst, PA, Graphic Design, Class of 2017. About his design, Garrett said, “As designers, the Senior Show and Celebration pieces challenged us, and how we see the show visually through one design. When coming to Lancaster, you really have no choice but to become part of the City. So for my design, I wanted to embrace the City. The type plays and runs through the City much like we do.”

GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.
Giving Back: Taraya Wright, MSW TARAYA WRIGHT was no stranger to life at “the bottom”, the nickname for the neighborhood where she grew up in West Philadelphia. Despite her dark surroundings, Taraya was motivated to rise up. She achieved top grades and was chosen to rub shoulders with fellow high school alum, Will Smith, at an event for high-achievers in her graduating class. Without accessible, positive role models though, her determination to succeed had to come from within. The other force that stirred within Taraya was the resolve to help others rise as well. Looking back, Taraya says she asked herself, “where was someone like me, for someone like me?” She decided to be the kind of person that she wished she had known when she was young. “I don’t know why, I’ve just always felt devoted to helping people,” she says. Taraya views her life experience as a

bridge to the population she serves in her work as a social worker. “Growing up in poverty, you don’t know anything else but how to survive.” she says. “I was from the hood before I got any of my college degrees. That’s always going to be a part of me.” With the word “Altruist” tattooed on her body, and a devotion to helping others cemented in her spirit, Taraya has dedicated her career to advocating for women and children in need. “I understand that this could be me; I could be in this situation, and that empathy helps me know what to do” she says. Through her work at Clare House, Taraya takes satisfaction in walking alongside women and helping open their eyes to the possibility of a better life. Extremely knowledgeable and connected, Taraya can point her clients to every service provider

in the community. She inspires the women she works with to imagine a stable, successful life and empowers them with strategies and resources to achieve it. The most rewarding aspect of her job is seeing women complete the six month program and move into their own space, working toward the life they want. Preferring to work behind the scenes in an empowering role, Taraya shies away from accolades but hopes to be an example in the community of what can be achieved when we come alongside each other. “The moment we can stop criticizing people for whatever decisions they’ve made, we can start really helping people.” For Taraya, helping people by meeting them where they are and helping them see a way forward, is a powerful way of giving back.

FIG VOICES New sounds of our City in partnership with WXPN.
Dana Alexandra Zbozien, a.k.a. Zōe Labelle
Voices: Zōe Labelle S H I N I N G W I T H A F R E E D O M to express herself like never before, singer Zōe Labelle is an outstanding choice for the WXPN & Fig Voices artist! At home, now residing in Philadelphia, she’s Dana Alexandra Zbozien—a native of York County, a kind soul, a yoga instructor, a wife. But when she gets it going musically she’s the one and only… Zōe Labelle! Just a day away from her CD release performance at the Strand Capitol Performing Arts Center’s Capitol Theatre, Zōe shared her life’s journey with us; what brought her to this point as a person and in her musical career. We were all ears as rising out of her story are the songs she wrote on the brand new E.P. For Years. You will be all ears when Helen Leicht plays the deeply personal, yet universal, ‘Evergreen’ on WXPN FM, a song Zōe penned after her mother passed away. "The gift of a mighty loss is learning you can make it through. Oh how the “Evergreen” tree will be steadfast through the winter of our discontent." Zōe was eager to tell the tale of how every song came about and in concert she’ll relate them to you in tailored performances, sure to keep you engaged. We heard about the talented band, the background singers, the twins who join them on stage as they interpret a few songs with their dance, and a few, intimate acoustic versions. An musical event to witness! For Years, a compelling five song E.P. with wide appeal and top-drawer sound, is the result of Zōe’s seasoned song writing skills, her sweeping voice, and the high caliber team at her label Think Loud Entertainment. There’s more to come; by mid-April, another all-original E.P. is slated for release. Tickets for gigs and more at ZoeLaBelle.com.

of Called—the life story of Lutheran Pastor Bob Lamparter and the history of his family, who operated the Conestoga Glue Works in the early days of Lancaster City.

With regional health care systems as partners, Facing Cancer Together (FCT) explored cancer as a personal as well as a medical story.
