At Fig Industries, we believe that one great idea can change everything. And with hard work and creativity, that idea can grow and bear beautiful fruit. We also believe that everything we do should have a positive impact on the community around us. That is how Fig was started almost 12 years ago in my hometown of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I believed that being a positive voice and bringing together independent businesses for locals to rally around could start to change perceptions and priorities. I believed that this simple and powerful mission could impact not only my community but other special small cities as well. People would believe, as I do, that independent businesses make up the backbone of our community and our country. Our choices matter, our neighbors matter, and if we invest in our community, it will make all the difference. For the past three years, Fig Industries has brought you the best of Columbia. We have lifted up the important work of non-profits and those community members who have put their heart and soul into making Columbia a better place. Our efforts have been led by Columbia natives Janet Scouten and Caroline Black. We are grateful for their work and thank them as they move on to their next adventure. They have planted the seed and now we are excited to be collaborating on its growth with local Columbia design and marketing studio ByFarr who will help

fulfill the creative mission to support the people, places, and partnerships that bring change and creativity to Columbia. Fig will now be all local, all the time. Read more about our exciting collaboration with ByFarr on page 14.

With growth comes change. As Fig grows, Columbia is also growing; changing and evolving before our very eyes. New restaurants, eateries, bars, and brew pubs are opening all around us. In this, our food and drink issue, we hope to introduce you to new places to experience, to enjoy eating local, and to celebrate favorite meals and new traditions. Please join us on this journey and be inspired by the thriving creative spirit in Columbia. We celebrate the local entrepreneurs and visionaries who are working together to make Columbia a more vibrant place to live, work, eat, drink, and play. AUTHENTIC Leading the way through innovation and example. Daniel Boan, Matthew Bridges, & Edwina Harmon

Authentic: Drake’s Duck-In A C O LU M B I A C L A S S I C S I N C E 19 07, Drake’s Duck-In has been serving up fried chicken, cheeseburgers, and breakfast biscuits for over 100 years. Originally located on Millwood Avenue delivering meals to hungry mill workers, the restaurant has been at its current Main Street location for the past twenty years. Upon his retirement, former owner Steve Rowland—who acquired the business in the early 1970s from the original Drake family—sold the business and the building to Daniel Boan and

Matthew Bridges. These Columbia cousins, recognizing the significant history behind their new venture, are honoring the past by keeping the classic menu as it’s always been. The heartbeat of Drake’s, manager Edwina Harmon (also known as Tiny), has been at the restaurant for over 20 years. She remains at the helm, keeping things running smoothly and ensuring the food is just as long-time regulars remember it—including that famous hand-battered fried chicken sandwich.

Recognizing that Drake’s is an experience that can’t be replicated, new owners Daniel and Matthew have primarily focused on freshening up the brand. With the help of local design studio ByFarr, Drake’s has acquired a new logo that marries the history of the company with a modern vibe. Keeping longstanding and loyal customers happy while inviting a new wave of Columbians to discover one of our city’s best loved institutions means Drake’s Duck-In will be around to enjoy for another 100 years.

Columbia raised and From the ground to the plate, the path our food takes impacts us all. We’re celebrating family-owned farms in and around Columbia that let us witness first-hand where our food comes from.

AT T H E S TA R T O F T H E 2 0 T H C E N T U R Y, most of the food we consumed came from within 50 miles or so of where we ate it. But as the culture at-large shifted from largely rural to urban, our food sources moved further and further away. So much of the modern food industry became invisible to consumers, ultimately raising questions about just exactly what we’re eating. Most of the grocery-store produce we encounter today travels hundreds of miles, often picked well before it’s ripened and

sprayed with chemicals to reduce spoilage during transit. In response, consumers are increasingly recognizing the value of seasonality, freshness, and small farm economics. We’re embracing the value of local produce—ripened on the vine, full of flavor, and picked right before it’s eaten. Farm to Table is an expression we’re hearing a lot these days, and for good reason. Simply put, the farm to table movement is about reducing the distance your food travels from the farm to your plate, and appreciating your food’s

origins. Fueled by foodies, farmers, and restaurateurs, this movement has taken hold in Columbia and is changing how we think about what we eat. As it becomes about even more than the food itself, this movement is helping to foster a greater sense of community and fresh hope for the future. Shot on location at City Roots, Columbia’s in-town sustainable farm. Founded in 2009, City Roots is widely recognized for its achievements in urban, organic, and sustainable farming.

Voices: WXRY

Columbia’s Indepdendent Alternative WXRY 99.3 FM Finally, a reason to turn on your radio again. WXRY is nonprofit, listener-supported radio live from South Carolina’s Main Street. Operated by a 501(c)(3), the Independent Media Foundation’s mission is to help you discover new music while building an active, vibrant community. Broadcasting from the historic Barringer Building since 2005, WXRY is now also available in the suburbs. WXNE 98.1 FM and WXNW 99.1 FM provide WXRY 99.3 FM’s programming in the Northeast and Northwest. We started WXRY because we felt it was important for Columbia to have a new type of voice on the radio dial, one that wasn’t beholden to corporate interests that instead could truly serve our community. Corporate radio comes and goes. WXRY was built to last. If your old favorite radio station has changed, give us a shot. We promise not to abandon you. We’re listener-supported yet we don’t often ask for your money and we know that’s a little confusing. How is WXRY on the air and still able to do that? We decided long ago not to hold the music hostage over fundraising or to beat up our listeners for their cash. It’s easy to help WXRY stay on the air and we appreciate every dollar you’re able to give. We could not exist without you, our listeners. Thanks for your continued support! Learn more at wxryfm.org.

Five Easy Ways You Can Support WXRY: Support our underwriters, the local businesses and area non-profits that make WXRY possible.

Give a small one-time donation or make one that is recurring by visiting our website or Facebook page.

Attend a station event like the WXRY Music Crawl or those put on by our strategic partners.

Responsibly imbibe WXRY Oxbow Amber brewed by our friends at Swamp Cabbage Brewing Company.

Purchase a t-shirt, coffee mug, other station swag, or make a donation at a live broadcast.

Can’t afford to donate? No problem. Simply support WXRY just by listening and spreading the word. You’re the reason we do what we do.

Make the most of the summer Rather than making plans to visit out-of-town friends and family this summer, invite them here to experience Columbia, SC. Whether you’re planning family-friendly fun, have friends in town for the weekend, are seeking outdoor adventure, exploring arts and culture, or dreaming up the perfect date night, Columbia has everything you’re looking for. The folks with Experience Columbia SC spend their days convincing out-of-towners to come to Columbia for a visit. We chatted with them and rounded up a few tips for enjoying your own town the way a visitor would.

38

ISSUE 15 / SUMMER 2017 / THE FOOD & DRINK ISSUE

Friends in Town for the Weekend Kick things off on Saturday with a trip to Soda City Market. Your friends will rave about the food vendors, the cute dogs, and the overall community vibe. Pack a cooler, rent some tubes from Palmetto Outdoors, and spend the afternoon floating the river. Catch up with friends in the fresh air, cool waters, and old growth hardwood forests in next to no time flat. Then head to River Rat Brewery for a game of cornhole and a cold brew. May we suggest the Twisted Lemon Wheat or the Broad River Red? Spirit Communications Park

You’re sure to have worked up an appetite by now. Claim a picnic table on the back patio at The War Mouth and keep your fingers crossed that they have the ribs on special!

Family-Friendly

The sun may be going down, but the night is just getting started. Head to the Vista to check out live music, dance the night away, or just enjoy conversation over a few drinks.

Fuel your action-packed day with a hearty breakfast of cinnamon pancakes (and a few trips to the coffee bar for the adults!) at Café Strudel.

Take an ice cream break at a Columbia classic—Rosewood Dairy Bar! What’s a day with the kids without a visit to EdVenture Children’s Museum? Hang with EDDIE and celebrate the seasonal return of the Blooming Butterflies exhibit. Finish up with a Columbia Fireflies baseball game. The kiddos will love playing in the Fireflies Kid Zone and getting their picture with Mason, while the adults will love sipping on a well-deserved local beer!

While away a few hours at Riverbanks Zoo, where you can visit the sea lions, feed the giraffes, take a walk with the kangaroos, and climb to new heights on Sky High Safari, the four-story ropes course challenge.

On Sunday, make a pit stop at Publico for some brunch. Mix it up with plantain pancakes or huevos rancheros and wash it all down with the “You Want S’more Cold Brew Coffee” cocktail.

Congaree National Park

Columbia Culture Jump start your day with a (coffee) flight to four different countries, paired with an international treat at one of Columbia’s newest independent coffee shops, Curiosity Coffee Bar on North Main. Mingle with the locals and shop the stalls for handmade goods at Soda City Market. Be sure to check out the talented buskers who come out and perform each week. You’d be remiss in not stopping by the Columbia Museum of Art. Explore the permanent collection, where you’ll find works by the likes of Monet and Botticelli, as well as the new exhibit for summer—That 70’s Show. This temporary exhibit pulls from the museum’s collection of contemporary art to showcase the “decade that taste forgot.” Eat lunch al fresco at Michael’s Café and Catering. Enjoy people-watching over a Firecracker Shrimp Salad or a Brie-L-T.

Adventure-Seekers

Jump in on a free guided tour of the South Carolina State House and learn all about how Columbia became the capitol of South Carolina. Settle in for dinner with a view (of The State House) at The Oak Table where Executive Chef Todd Woods will expand your palate with his dedication to local and seasonal cuisine, and where you’ll discover the cocktail of your dreams.

Find the energy you need for an early morning bike ride in Harbison State Forest with a freshly-pressed juice from Southern Squeezed and some handmade granola from Silver Spoon Bake Shop. After you’ve conquered the trails, feast on a pulled pork sandwich from The Southern Belly BBQ. (Might we suggest the Django with bacon, melted pepper jack cheese, and jalapenos on top?) Pop into Craft and Draft to stock up on overnight essentials—a build-your-own six pack of regional brews and locally-made beef jerky! Rent some canoes or kayaks from a local outfitter like River Runner or Get Your Gear On and spend the afternoon paddling one of Congaree National Park’s Blue Trails. Make a reservation in advance and spend the night under the stars at the Longleaf Campground ($20 per night for a group tent site). In the morning, head back downtown for brunch at Bourbon, where you’ll have more than earned the Biscuit of Champions!

Date Night Make the most of having your long-distance sweetie in town with a romantic evening that’ll make them swoon. Tuck in to an early dinner on the patio at Motor Supply Co. Bistro. Order the charcuterie and a couple of craft cocktails to get things started. After you’ve dined them, it’s time to wine them! Move over to Main Street and cozy up with a glass from what is arguably the best wine selection in town at Lula Drake. (Impress your date with your knowledge of the history of the building, where Lula Drake herself ran a hat shop in the early 1900s.) Catch a film next door at the Nickelodeon Theatre— where you can continue to drink MORE wine! A movie isn’t complete without some popcorn, so order a large and share it like a couple of love birds. The night is still young. Walk hand-in-hand and let the fairy-lit trees guide you back down Main Street toward the Vista. Order a milkshake with two straws at Kaminsky’s and congratulate yourself on pulling off the perfect evening.

F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to Columbia, South Carolina. Owner Kayla Sansom with freshly roasted coffee beans

Fresh Face: Palmetto State of Mind T H E OW N E R A N D O P E R AT O R of the popular Carolina Soap Works, Kayla Sansom is branching out with her newest family-owned venture: Palmetto State of Mind coffee roasters. In her own words: “Our family has been roasting for over five years and started selling coffee to the public under the name Palmetto State of Mind the first weekend of April this year at Soda City.” “We wanted to roast our coffee so we could control the freshness, roast to our exact taste, and experiment with

blending different coffee beans from all over the world.” “Our beans are purchased directly from small farms in Ethiopia to ensure the farmer is paid a fair price,” explains Kayla. “Ethiopia is the birth place of coffee and has always been our personal favorite. Coffee from this area has a rich and creamy dark chocolate aroma.” “When working with beans from a new origin, we roast several batches at different levels to determine the best tasting roast. For example: we roasted our Ethiopian Limu coffee beans at a

light, medium, medium-dark, and dark roast. Then we had friends and family over to try then all. The winner was medium-dark.” “Customers at Soda City are always complimenting the taste, saying the coffee is so rich that they don’t need to add much cream, if any at all.” To discover Palmetto State of Mind, visit Main Street’s Soda City Market every Saturday, 9 am – 1 pm.

Drip Coffee

7 2 9 S A L U D A AV E & 14 41 M A I N S T With a location in Five Points since 2011 and one on Main Street since 2013, Drip Coffee has quickly become a Columbia institution. Offering perfect pour-over coffee and expertly prepared espresso drinks, this coffee shop café is where Columbia recharges, refuels, and takes care of business. Whether it’s Drip in Five Points’ boho atmosphere or the sleek modern vibe of their Main Street location, the baristas know your name and your drink. Their breakfast and lunch menus featuring gourmet sandwiches and baked goods change seasonally.

What’s the buzz? With an increasing number of independently-owned coffee shops opening across the city, Columbia’s coffee culture is thriving. Encouraging community and connection, coffee houses have historically served as places where people meet and discuss ideas or just enjoy each other’s company.

Over the past several years, they’ve also become the spots where Columbia does business, meeting over a cup and getting things done. And as baristas serve up their best brews, our local coffee shops are becoming the spaces where Columbia gathers.

Social Mission: Make-A-Wish South Carolina AT F I G , W E B E L I E V E in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions— one that creates connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. For 2017, we’ve chosen Make-A-Wish South Carolina, an impactful non-profit whose good works contribute immensely to our thriving, local community. Grayson is a happy three-year-old who loves to play and watch cartoons. However, a heart defect caused Grayson to undergo a heart transplant. His surgeries and condition have taken precious time away from his childhood. His medical condition also put a strain on the household, often felt by his siblings and his mother, but Grayson

50

has managed to remain joyful. In February 2017 at The Wish Ball, held by Make-A-Wish South Carolina at the USC Alumni Center in Columbia’s historic Vista region, Grayson was a guest of honor. That evening, it was revealed live onstage that Grayson’s wish was being granted. Grayson and his family would leave the very next day to go to Walt Disney World® Resort. Sponsors and guests were able to witness an incredibly transformative moment in a wish kid’s life—the moment a wish kid realizes his wish is coming true! At Walt Disney World, Grayson enjoyed time with his family. The strain of his medical condition was far from their minds and was replaced with joy and an appreciation for their time together.

The memories from Grayson’s wish experience will continue to offer him and his family hope and happiness.
