I ’ M A S U M M E R G I R L through and through. In my mind, there’s nothing better than wading into the Brandywine River with my kids on a hot day, or grilling burgers and fresh veggies on the deck with dear friends. I love how the trees reach their branches toward each other, creating the most beautiful green canopy over State Street. I love how good music, thoughtful art, and local food bring people together. And the extra hours of sunlight give us all more time to sip our wine, read our books, and run barefoot through the yard. There is no shortage of things to do in Kennett Square this summer. It’s the only time of year when you can spend Wednesday evenings enjoying live concerts at Anson B. Nixon Park, Third Thursdays on State Street having dinner al fresco, Fridays picking up local produce at the Farmer’s Market, and Saturdays meeting friends at The Creamery. And don’t forget about the incredible return of the Main Fountain Garden at Longwood Gardens. With epic fireworks and a spectacular lineup of performances, you’ll be inspired to visit the Gardens again and again. Among these pages, you’ll find plenty of things to do as well as plenty of things to eat. We are
calling this our Farm-to-Table issue, and the goal is to showcase the special relationship between local farmers and the local markets and restaurants with whom they work. Our photoshoots included a 1,600 pound grass-fed dairy cow named Legacy, an herb farm with edible flowers, and a bustling field where I was able to pick stalks of asparagus right out of the ground and roast them for dinner that night. It was inspiring! My hope is that you’ll be motivated to shop and dine at the spots in town that offer the best of locally grown, locally produced food this summer. It’s with admiration of these farmers and business owners that I leave you with this issue to enjoy. BRIANNA CARLISLE & THE FIG INDUSTRIES TEAM
A NOTE FROM FIG
Cheers to a delicious season.
AUTHENTIC Leading the way through innovation and example.
Bill Holdsworth, Police Chief
Authentic: Bill Holdsworth W H E N H E ’ S O F F D U T Y, Bill Holdsworth experiences Kennett Square like everyone else—enjoying coffee at Philter or dinner in town with his wife Debbie. But when he’s working, Holdsworth sees the town through a unique lens: as Police Chief. Holdsworth was sworn in to his new position on April 3, but he’s hardly a new face on the force; he’s been around for two decades. A graduate of Unionville High School, Holdsworth ran his own landscaping business before joining the Kennett Square Police full time in 1998.
6
The difference between Kennett Square twenty years ago and today is “night and day,” according to Holdsworth, citing a decrease in drugs and nuisance crime. Now, he says, “Kennett is a place to be.” Part of the positive change has come out of the hard work of the Borough office and Historic Kennett Square, he says. The police are also “part of the process,” says Holdsworth, giving credit to the past two Chiefs for developing the Community Policing mentality that has developed a positive relationship between the police and residents.
LEARN MORE ABOUT FIG AUTHENTIC AT FIGKENNETT.COM
All this makes Holdsworth happy to come to his job every day. On his days off, you may still see Holdsworth around town. Together, he and Debbie have four children—aged 20, 18, 3, and an infant. And when the weather cooperates, you may find him playing a round of golf at a nearby course. If you spot him, just be sure to keep your golf cart within the posted speed limit.

Fresh Face: Grain W H E N YO U WA L K I N T O Grain Craft Bar & Kitchen on State Street, certain things feel familiar—the original Candy Kitchen floor tile, the rooftop dining, the casual atmosphere where you can comfortably bring your date, your family, or your friends.
Something else that’s always fresh at Grain: the menu. The cuisine can be described as “creative tastes for regular folks,” and co-owner Jim O’Donoghue says the menu is frequently updated to improve it based on customer and staff feedback. At Grain, innovation is key.
But other aspects feel fresh and new, such as the entertainment. “Live music is a big part of who we are,” says co-owner Lee Mikles. Small acoustic bands play 3-4 nights a week and other entertainment such as Trivia and Bingo rounds out the schedule.
But even more foundational to the vision of Grain is a commitment to the neighborhood and the relationships in it. As Mikles puts it, “We want to celebrate the community we’re in.” Kennett Square is the second location for Grain. Grain first opened in Newark
in 2015. In Newark, says O’Donoghue, “We have so many people who have met people from their neighborhood. They get to know each other through Grain.” At a Community Table, folks get acquainted through Conversation Starter questions. On the walls hang caricatures of the frequent customers Mikles and O’Donoghue see connecting with others. This is the vision they bring to Kennett: a gathering place with good entertainment, creative food, and, above all, a sense of connection.

bowls, snacks, and homemade baked goods.
It’s appropriate that those were the words hand-lettered on the chalkboard of Squeeze on State at its grand opening in early May. After all, they point to some of the key ideals owner Mathew Shook has for his new business: community and fun.
However, Shook’s vision is that Squeeze is more than just its fresh, healthy offerings. He also provides local churches and nonprofits a place to share information about their upcoming events and services, through notes on the chalkboard, flyers, and information sessions.
Squeeze is an organic juice and smoothie bar, serving recipes curated by manager Colleen Kauffman that she has used over the years for herself and her family. Located in The Market at Liberty Place, Squeeze also sells granola and yogurt
Finally, Shook wants Squeeze to be a place of enrichment, whether it’s a young staff member making connections for his or her future, or a customer learning facts about the health benefits of each fruit and vegetable.
20
148 W STATE STREET, KENNETT SQUARE
Shook also owns Horizon Buildings Solutions, a property management company, with customers throughout the nation. But Squeeze is different: “I wanted to invest in the local community,” Shook says. And Shook has even found ways to include his retired parents in the new business—his mom will bake some of the goodies and his dad will help with the paperwork—making it a family affair. Shook sums up his hopes for Squeeze simply: “I hope everybody finds their own space here and finds a way to have fun with it.”
Aside from being known as the
Mushroom Capital of the World, Kennett Square is surrounded by many beautiful farmlands. We have beloved orchards, cut flower farms, rolling hills of vegetables, and mouth-watering artisanal cheeses —all being produced just miles away. From fresh markets offering locallysourced ingredients to delicious restaurants ensuring their menus are full of fresh options, Kennett Square is rich with regional agriculture that truly
supports the idea of farm-to-table living. This close relationship between farmer and chef is not only great for the local economy, but also creates fresher food, better taste, and quality nutrients. Local honey, garden herbs, grass-fed beef, flavorful cheeses, colorful produce, and organic ice cream—delicious home grown food is abundant in Kennett Square. The next several pages showcase individual stories of some of your favorite business owners and their commitment to grow, buy, and cook local.

Only five miles down the road, Baily’s Dairy Farm was an easy choice to partner with for fresh, high quality dairy products. Larry Hood Sr. and Barnard Baily went to Unionville High School together in the 70’s. who have quite literally grown up in the family business. Baily daughters Meredith and Becky and Hood brother-and-sister duo Morgan and Larry III also went to high school together and carry on the tradition of producing locally-sourced food. Baily’s dairy cows are grass-fed and are not given any growth hormones. You might say they’re the happiest cows in Chester County. Make it a summer day trip for a satisfying meal at Hood’s followed by a visit to Baily’s historic 122-acre farm which is open to the public and offers fresh milk, ice cream, and seasonal produce every day.

A Showroom that Shines There’s something about summer that shines new light onto the world we lose in winter. Cities and towns invite you to linger under the sun; street fairs and festivals shine in the summer sky; outdoor spaces are aglow with candlelit dinners, tiki-torched pool parties, and cozy fire pits. Let the light of summer inspire you to breathe new life into your space—to find the look that renews your spirit and sparks the light inside of you.

G E N E S I S is proud to work with the Kennett Food Cupboard on a regular basis, encouraging employee food drives and monetary donations. In April, a food drive was conducted in all three buildings of the Genesis campus and it generated nearly 500 pounds of food, diapers, and personal care items for our community—enough to completely restock the shelves. CEO George Hager was happy to see the results of this most recent food drive. He adds, “In speaking with Melanie Weiler, I was amazed to learn about the amount of support

the Kennett Food Cupboard offers our local community. Not only do they fight local hunger, but they also assist the homeless and educate people to end the cycle of poverty. I would like to encourage you to support this great organization and Genesis will continue to do the same.” The Kennett Food Cupboard program and Kennett Area Community Service (K.A.C.S.) provide a 6-7 day supply of food to over 1,200 individuals each month. GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.
Giving Back: Scudder Stevens W H E N S C U D D E R S T E V E N S talks about his thirty years in Kennett Square, he doesn’t describe a succession of events. Instead, he describes a web of people and relationships: “We’re all connected.” Stevens, a general practice lawyer, began to get involved with volunteer efforts in Kennett through the Rotary, which lead to a position on the board of the Senior Center. Among his favorite memories from those years was wearing a duck costume for the annual duck race fundraiser. “It was actually fun,” he says.
In the past three decades, Stevens has additionally served on the Kennett Library board and helped found Historic Kennett, the Brewfest, and Kennett Run (up until two years ago, he ran the 10k.) He’s also running to serve a second term as a Supervisor of Kennett Township, where he lives. About thirty years ago, Stevens’ family of four moved into the historic farm house where his wife Mary Claire had lived with her own parents. For a while, Stevens even gave farm life a try, raising sheep and chickens. Ultimately, though,
he says, “I had to decide whether I was a sheep farmer or a lawyer.” Law won out. Perhaps this is to Kennett Square’s benefit, since it allowed Stevens to stay connected to Kennett’s thriving volunteer community. Stevens, though, claims it’s also been to his benefit: “The positive energy I receive from those who care for this community is energizing and inspiring. It is a very gratifying experience to share with others a strong commitment to where we live.”

A Music School with Rhythm & Heart “The Mattock School of Music has been such an enriching addition to my life, and I am so incredibly grateful to Dave for all of his guidance and support in helping me learn to become a better musician. As a more mature learner, I often wish I had followed along with the few music lessons of my youth. But alas, as a young lad, I preferred to be out on a skateboard. Had I instead found a teacher like Dave at the time—supportive, creative, and energetic in his enthusiasm for all things musical—I would have certainly stuck with it.”
