G R OW I N G U P I N L A N C A S T E R County is a gift that I often take for granted. With a childhood in the country, I have memories of running barefoot through rich soil, picking ripe strawberries in the summer heat, and learning how to can, bake, and share the bounty of our rich farmland. My favorite meal was slippery pot pie with egg noodles, finished with homemade ice cream and sour cherry pie. We had food to match every moment and memory—it was a wonderful way to grow up. Lancaster’s food heritage is strong— Pennsylvania Dutch influence runs deep throughout the culture of the County and City, and I take it with me wherever I go. When I left Lancaster and moved to New York City, my eyes were opened to a completely new world of cuisine. It was inspirational to see the kaleidoscope of flavor profiles, but I always treasured my visits home to Lancaster for a comforting meal and a slice of pie. Lancaster was where we chose to raise our family and more than ever before, our food scene is paying homage to the classics while adding a modern, global twist. We now have every bit of what I found in New York, all while maintaining the storied legacy of local ingredients, homegrown goodness, and nostalgic flavors. We can enjoy a locally grown,

handmade apple pie after going to Citronelle for their Wagyu Beef Carpaccio. We can visit Sprout for a freshly-made spring roll before stopping by Central Market for a whoopie pie. The restaurants here in our great City are not only defining the regional food scene, they are lifting each other up while doing so. We’re sourcing locally living up to the Lancaster County reputation of freshness and quality. So many years after running through the fields, I am thankful that Fig can work to communicate the food heritage of our County and the food renaissance we are experiencing in our City. Landmarks LANCASTER’S MICRO - CAFE 40 EAST GRANT STREET The Wagner Cafe, a restaurant and billiard parlor measuring only 24 feet wide by 30 feet deep may very well have been the predecessor of the ‘micro-cafe’ in Lancaster City. In 1891, German immigrant Charles Wagner retained Lancaster’s emerging young architect C. Emlen Urban to design a cafe, boutique hotel, and entertainment emporium at 40 East Grant Street. Twenty-eight-year-old Urban selected the Romanesque Revival architectural style for his second major commission in the city. No expense was spared when it came to the use of quality building materials, design innovation, and character. The three story masonry structure features an asymmetrical tower that draws attention to the truncated corner entrance below. A twisted cast iron Byzantine column with a pillow-top capital supports the pressed brick arches and tower. Urban’s liberal use of architectural detailing and materials includes elaborate corbeling, diapering (crisscross patterns), soldier coursing, rough cut sandstone, terra cotta moldings, pyramidal roof, rounded brick piers, decorative leaded glass, and pressed tin features. Also, his confidence and ability to successfully mix flat, segmental, and full round arches in a narrow twenty-four-foot-wide facade was the preamble of things to come in his designs. Mr. Wagner sold the cafe to Mr. Frank F. Shue who operated the establishment until the late 1920s. Following the years of vacancy, the building was reclaimed and repurposed for the law offices of Goldberg & Byer and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The 127-yearold-structure still stands tall today among the shadows of its towering neighbors. RLPS Architects believes in the appreciation and honoring of architecturally significant buildings in the City. The story of Aussie and The Fox has unfolded in Lancaster as one of whimsy and wonder, celebration and community.

With the support of Frank Fox, Julia Morrell and her Australianborn husband, Colin, took a space on King Street to offer something extraordinary. With its stately sofas and sparkling chandeliers, Aussie and The Fox became the beautiful setting of our after work happy hours, anniversary dinners, date nights, and family brunch. Lancaster came with friends and family to catch up over crispy cauliflower, toast Bloody Marys, and indulge in an Aussie burger— each patron weaving themselves into the story of Aussie and The Fox, each character bringing

more life and joy into the space. The other magic that was created here was the sense of family that evolved from a group of people who worked together to make Aussie and The Fox such a big part of our community. The Aussie and the Fox staff remain key characters of this beautiful story. Julia says, “We wanted to make our mark on the Lancaster restaurant scene, to offer cuisine that was truly unique and different, and were so humbled and grateful to find ourselves changed too, gaining a forever family and incredible learning experience.” Their story took a twist when an unsolicited offer was made, and Colin, Julia, and Frank allowed themselves to imagine a new chapter. They have the opportunity to play a different

role in the community that they’ve served over the years, and to experience the Lancaster that has evolved while they were working on their contribution to the city’s story. “It wasn’t planned, but when the offer came, we realized that we were ready to close these doors and create something new—including starting a family.” The next chapter finds the main characters grateful to have been such a huge part of our lives, and excited about new travels, celebrations, and opportunities on the horizon. As for Lancaster, we raise our Mimosas and Bloody Marys in a toast, with fond memories of great food, drinks, and community. THE WEST END, one of Lancaster City’s most historically coveted neighborhoods, has it all—oldworld elegance, flowering trees, and a picture-perfect parkside location. It’s almost entirely residential, with a great mixture of historic mansions, charming row houses, and unique, tucked-away homes on two square miles of quiet streets. Gil Lyons, realtor with RE/MAX Pinnacle, grew up in the West End. His favorite block is a hidden stretch of Virginia Ave. lined with beautiful gardens. “Many of the residents moving into the West End today are young families who love the walking distance to the New School and plethora of outdoor activities for children and canines at the park,” says Lyons. park across the street where we go to play football or lacrosse, or take our dog to play in a lavish dog park with his own friends,” he says. Locals know that summer is the best time to walk across Buchanan Park to College Row on Franklin and Marshall’s campus. The outdoor patio at Blue Line Cafe (561 Old Main Dr.) is the perfect place to extend a day spent at the park over fresh local fare. Residents can walk through the park to The North Museum (400 College Ave.), a science museum with its own planetarium and a lower level full of cabinet curiosities to delight young and old discoverers. While enjoying a West End walk, visit the Little Free Library located on West End Avenue to find or share a favorite book. Most West End homes have porches decorated like an extension of the home; you’ll see reading lamps, chandeliers, ceiling fans, rugs, and cozy nooks where residents gather well into the evening hours. “As soon as we get home from work, my wife and I immediately sit out on the porch,” says Schmelder. “It provides an interesting contrast to neighborhoods where people generally stay in the backyard. Here, it’s a more social thing because we all end up relaxing and socializing among our neighbors out on our porches.” There’s something for everyone in the West End. Homes here come in a surprising variety of styles and price points, and a welcoming neighborhood porch culture awaits.

The Summer Playground Programs are a FREE 8-week program for youth ages 6 – 13. We offer supervised activities, games, contests, and crafts to keep children busy and happy through the summer. Wading pools at each site open at noon so kids can cool off from the summer heat. Children of all ages are welcome to use the wading pool, but children under 5 must have a parent or guardian in the water with them. Each playground has one supervisor and up to five playground leaders, as well as volunteer junior playground leaders. A Lancaster Rec supervisor visits each playground at least once a day. Authentic: Warden Cheryl Steberger “ T H I S WO R K I S R E WA R D I N G because of the people that I meet, the families that I help, and the hope that we give.” Cheryl Steberger, Lancaster County Prison Warden, started as a Correctional Officer 23 years ago, moved onto Sergeant, Lieutenant, Major, and then finally Prison Warden in 2016. “We are like a family here,” said Cheryl. “The communication with that staff is very transparent. Everyone deserves to know what’s going on and that establishes real trust.” Cheryl is the first woman to be warden at the Lancaster County Prison, something she is truly excited to use as inspiration.

“Being Prison Warden has allowed me to be a role model for not only the other female staff working in the correctional field, but also for the women who are incarcerated.” Since becoming Warden, Cheryl has been hard at work implementing effective new initiatives at the prison. “We have a society reentry roadmap to success,” added Cheryl. “The program for reentry into the community is crucial, and it’s important to continue that progress.” Cheryl hopes people can learn to refrain from generalizations and negative stigmas regarding corrections and the population within the prison.

“There is a negative stigma when it comes to those suffering from addiction,” said Cheryl. “By educating yourself, you begin to understand the hardship and the stories behind it. It’s a struggle we need to come alongside and help end.” She is also very proud of the team at the prison. “There are many who dedicate their lives to protect and serve the public,” added Cheryl. “They are true professionals that deserve respect.” As for what motivates her personally and professionally, Cheryl shared her life mantra. “I follow the Golden Rule—treat others how you want to be treated.”

On February 29, 2016, the first swing of the sledgehammers began—marking the beginning of Mission Makeover. With the 24-hour help of the Lancaster community, the six-week, 5,700 squarefoot renovation was completed in just seven days. Led by Clark Food Service Equipment, Warfel Construction, Haller Enterprises,

and RLPS Architects, teams of subcontractors, churches, businesses, and individuals provided their time, talents, and financial support so that Water Street’s guests would be able to enjoy great food in a café-style setting that communicates dignity and fosters connection. One of Water Street’s guests, 8-year-old Tanya, remarked, “It’s like a restaurant. I love coming here with my momma and sister.” Her mother, Daysie, added, “We weren’t here when they fixed up the dining hall, but we’ve heard the stories

about everyone who helped. It’s amazing the way people in Lancaster County give to help others—those they don’t even know. He was also an avid watcher of PBS specials on brain surgery, further solidifying his future career goal. “I then enrolled in West Point before even visiting,” said Dr. Monacci. “The teachings fostered discipline, honesty, and a strong work ethic for my career.” “ I WA S A LWAY S I N T E R E S T E D I N T H E M E D I C A L F I E L D. One, because you are impacting someone’s life directly, and two, because it’s like engineering—the body is the machine and you are learning how one of the most intricate machines in the world works.” Dr. William Monacci, Neurosurgeon at Lancaster NeuroScience & Spine Associates, was influenced to pursue this field by his mother, an intensive

Dr. Monacci attended the military’s medical school in Bethesda, MD, before working at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center—the hospital where White House staff, the president, and global dignitaries would go. He later completed a fellowship at George Washington University before teaching neurosurgery at Walter Reed to next generations. In 2004, he was stationed in Kuwait and was the neurosurgeon consultant to the

Army Surgeon General until 2006, when he began his plan to join a private practice. He’s proud of the now ever-growing team at Lancaster NeuroScience & Spine Associates. “We are all at different ages and at different stages in life, so we can learn from each other,” added Dr. Monacci. “It’s a team approach where we all really support one another.” Dr. Monacci emphasized that whether it’s soldiers around the world or residents here in Lancaster, PA, his goal is the same: to work hard, lessening neurological challenges and enhancing the quality of life for his patients. As far as his personal mantra, he noted that “it’s not about falling, it’s about how you get up. Do your best, and always have humility.”
