S U M M E R P I C N I C S A R E one of my all-time favorites. Just ask my husband—I’m next-level giddy planning the perfect picnic spread complete with checkered napkins, floral centerpieces, sweet and savory bites, mint tea from our garden, and fun finger foods. For me, it’s all about the Perfect Pairing, and West Chester does not disappoint! Curated combos are all around: flowering window boxes set against al fresco dining; fresh produce and homemade goodies in open-air markets; custom outdoor living spaces encircled by blooming gardens; and a walkable downtown with boutique shopping and family-friendly events that draw us outdoors after our forced winter hibernation. Summer is here at long last. This issue is full of so many special things—and yes, delightful duos too. The “Perfect Pairings” spread on page 22 brings together six different businesses and their commended combinations. Summer’s Fresh Face, Sue’s Chestnut Street Cafe & Gallery, forges ahead to bring their vision to life
on the northeast side. Thornbury Farms, just a quick trip out of town, packages together an organic CSA, family tradition, Battle of Brandywine history, and a garden pergola on a sprawling 200-acre dreamland. In the center of the issue, find a piece on West Chester’s momentous win of the nationallyacclaimed Great American Main Street Award. Fig couldn’t be more honored to partner with the West Chester Business Improvement District to lift up and give voice and vision to this place we love so much. Hats off to you, BID. We celebrate as West Chester earns their seat at this fantastic table. Here’s to an adventurous Summer of perfectly paired explorations! G R E T C H E N LU S BY AND THE FIG INDUSTRIES TEAM

F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to the Borough of West Chester Sue Long with her father, Ray Jackson
Fresh Face: Sue’s Chestnut Street Café & Gallery O N T H E I R R A M B L I N G walks through West Chester, Sue Long listened to her dad, Ray, tell her about the borough’s history—and, more personally—how things were when he was growing up here. He’d point out a building and tell her what it used to be or who had resided within its walls. Just a few blocks from where she lives now, the vacant building on the corner of North Franklin and East Chestnut was once a grocery store that anchored the neighborhood, he explained.
And a coffee shop it will be. With Sue and Ray’s new venture, Sue’s Cafe, they want to create another neighborhood gathering place. In the airy, inviting space, she points out where the kitchen will be, how she’s sourcing sustainable ingredients and coffee for her menu of light and healthful breakfast and lunch items. Oh, and it will also be a gallery for local artists—including Sue and Ray. Her brother’s art will also find a place. Sue’s already planning for her first group show titled “The Good Earth.”
“I’d walk by and think, ‘what a great place for a coffee shop,’ ” she says.
Though Ray grew up here, he only recently moved back. Sue was born in Augusta, Georgia, and lived in more resort-oriented places before settling

here. “When you live in a tourist area, you’re busy all summer and don’t get to enjoy the place you’re in,” she says. “And then everyone leaves. I love that West Chester is more constant; it doesn’t go through that kind of radical change.” She thinks Sue’s Cafe will also be a “constant,” enriching both body and soul. “I want this to be a place that serves our neighborhood,” she says. “The idea of a place that’s not work or home but is comforting and welcoming— a place that creates its own sense of community.” Find out more at sueschestnutstreetcafegallery.com

AUTHENTIC Making West Chester a better place to live, work, and visit.
Authentic: Johnathan Ashton levels visuals prime
I F YO U R E A D every historical marker or plaque you pass, you’ll find an immediate kinship with Johnathan Ashton. He’s a poet, photographer, music producer, and video artist. And he recently put his talents to use to create “Historical Landmarks,” a short film showcasing West Chester’s architecture and history. “History is my passion, and to preserve it I use my camera,” he says. A native of South Philadelphia, Johnathan moved to West Chester about 10 years ago, and was struck by its feeling of community and how much history is alive here. “When I was in grade school, we buried time capsules at school. Now we have a time capsule right in our hands,” he says, gesturing with his mobile phone. Through his multimedia company, Levels Visuals Prime, Johnathan partnered with Malcolm Johnstone of the West Chester Business Improvement District to create “Historical Landmarks,” which explores West Chester’s historic buildings, architecture, and important milestones. The BID rolled out the video as the first of four installments on the Downtown West Chester Facebook page in May. It can also be seen on Levels Visuals Prime site, at LevelsVisuals.com. Johnathan founded Levels Visuals Prime in 2014, with a goal to support the community. “Making every moment beautiful is my goal,” he says. “Which directly correlates with my love of history.”

Giving Back: The Charles A. Melton Arts & Recreation Center kenneth winston executive director lisa dorsey president of the board of directors E S TA B L I S H E D I N 1 9 1 8 as the West Chester Community Center, it was renamed the Charles A. Melton Arts & Education Center in 2004. But to those who gathered here throughout the years, neither name was really needed. “When someone calls it ‘the Center,’ I know you’re from here and what it means to you,” says Lisa Dorsey, the president of the board of directors. Lisa’s a part of this institution’s long history. “I lived around the corner on Barnard with my parents and grandparents,” she says. “My father came here, I went to Head Start and daycare here, and my grandson begs me to bring him here.” Ken Winston is more of a newcomer, volunteering and then becoming executive director only a few years ago. But he has his own passion for this anchor of the historically African-American neighborhood on the borough’s eastern edges. “We’re moving forward, with new partnerships, like the memorandum of understanding between the Borough and the Center.” That agreement allows the Borough and the Melton Center to share resources and coordinate events together, and signals a much closer relationship. Not everyone in West Chester was

always so eager to partner with or support the Center. “My first year here I went downtown to get businesses to sponsor the basketball program and I got doors slammed in my face,” says Ken. But he persevered, and last year the summer basketball league fielded 15 teams for boys ages 8-16 and girls ages 8-13, supported with help from more local businesses every year. Another point of pride is the New Directions afterschool program that’s comprehensively addressing academics, culture, and behavior. Kickstarted by a grant from the Moody’s Foundation, there’s nothing else like it in West Chester, says Ken. “Have you ever heard of an after-school program with report cards?” he asks with pride. “We want to support the whole child academically, culturally, and behaviorally,” explains Lisa. “It’s rigorous; you have to meet criteria to be maintained in the program.” Community outreach and fundraising are a way of life for Lisa, Ken, the rest of the board, and the growing number of volunteers. The next big campaign is one that might be closest to Lisa’s heart, the Pool Together campaign aimed at reopening the Melton Center’s swimming facilities. “I graduated from the kiddy pool to the big pool and swam in it for years,” she says “When I joined the board eight years ago, my goal was to get that pool open again.” Other infrastructure concerns jumped the line, so it was on the back burner until now. As the only public pool in West Chester, its refurbishing and opening would benefit the entire community. The Melton Center is committed to reaching out. “We have the most diverse board in West Chester,” says Ken. “We aim to serve everyone.” That desire gets back to basics for Lisa. “We started as the West Chester Community Center,” she says. “And that inclusiveness is what we strive for—to embrace the whole West Chester community and have them come here.”
