A bright future for local migrant group in Alberta by Marco Luciano

Marco Luciano is the Global Council Representative of Philippine based Migrante International. He is also the current Secretary General of its chapter Migrante Canada.

EDMONTON - On August 27th Migrante Alberta held its first General Assembly at the Edmonton Intercultural Centre on 9538 107th Avenue. More than 70 members and friends from Edmonton Calgary and Red Deer came that Saturday afternoon to celebrate the anniversary and General Assembly

of the organization. Migrante Alberta is a Filipino migrant/immigrant advocacy organization that is part of a broader network of Filipino organizations from BC, Alberta,

Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes under the banner of Migrante Canada. The event started with the performance of Migrante Youth, a new committee of Migrante that

focuses on organizing the Filipino youth in the province. The event was packed with solidarity video messages from different parts of the world, cultural presentations and speeches from friends and

allies including MLA for Ellerslie Rod Loyola. A short breakout discussion was also held to provide direction to the three-year plan of the organization. The highlight of the event was the presentation of the past years and the election of the new officers. The report outlined major campaigns and victories in the last three years since Migrante was launched in 2013. Some of their victories include the campaign to install a Philippine consular office in Alberta and the, “Justice 4 Vicky Campaign”, a campaign to raise funds and stop the deportation of an injured temporary worker Vicky Venancio. The organization also was able to establish relationships with labour unions and community organizations. “Ang daming naging activities ng Migrante sa tatlong taon”. “Naging makabuluhan ang pagtatayo ng Migrante at sa maikling panahon nakilala kami” says Dhon Mojica, the newly elected Chairperson of Migrante. He was also looking forward to the next three years of his term. “Madami pang magagawa ang Migrante sa komunidad”. “At sa pagsasama-sama nating mga Pilipino dito, maging ano mang organisasyon ay magkakaboses tayo sa Alberta” he added. Migrante was also able to elect their new Executive Committee. Dhon Mojica from Edmonton was elected as the Chairperson, Jay Zapata from Calgary was elected as Vice-Chairperson, Joy Santos from Calgary was elected as Secretary General and Cynthia Palmaria from Edmonton is the new SecretaryTreasurer. “We had a great turn out at our General Assembly” said Cynthia Palmaria, the newly elected Secretary-Treasurer. “Everyone of the voting members that participated actively contributed to the discussion” she added. Palmaria was talking about the small group discussion of members that will help shape Migrante’s three-year program. Migrante will surely make its presence felt in Edmonton and the province in its advocacy work particularly on the issues affecting the migrant workers. The new Liberal government announced its version of changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program on September 19. Migrante acknowledges the need for reform from the Harper era clampdown; however, the organization feels that in the long term only through providing access to permanent residency upon arrival can we address the issue of current inequality and exploitation of migrants. They know that it’s a long-term battle but at the interim, the removal of employer ties and rescinding of the four in, four out rule will be an important step.

A tribute to

Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago A maple-coated Filipino Heart by Erlinda

Dolly Tan

erlindatan@yahoo.com

W

e knew her death was coming sooner than later knowing she had stage 4 lung cancer, but when the day came, still everyone froze. I was speechless for a minute. Then sadness. Filipinos from all over the world must have felt the same. Especially those who’re old enough to have followed her political career. I was in university when she ran for president in 1992. I campaigned for her. Too bad there was no social media then to back her up. Many believed she was cheated in that election. We can only imagine the “what if” possibilities had she won. Where would she have brought our country? Till today, many consider her “the greatest president we never have.” A genius like Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago comes once in a generation. So allow me to dedicate this space to her, to her unparalleled

brilliance. Actually the things I’ll write are nothing new but they still amaze us how a woman could be so gifted with intelligence. Education She graduated valedictorian both in elementary and high school in Iloilo City. She graduated magna cum laude in Political Science at the University of the Philippines or UP-Visayas in 1965. She then took up Law at UP-Diliman and graduated cum laude in 1969. She was the first female Editor-in-Chief of “The Philippine Collegian,” the famous student paper of UP. She broke a 50-year male leadership record. She won as best debater in the annual UP law debate. At the same time she was an ROTC corps sponsor, twice at that. She then went abroad to further her studies. She finished Master of Laws and Doctor of Juridical Science (or Doctor of Laws) at the University of Michigan, finishing both in one-and-a-half years only. She had post-doctoral studies all over the world - in Oxford University, Cambridge University, Harvard University, University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University and at The Hague International Law.

Law Career Obviously, she loved the law! She worked as legal officer at the United Nations (UN) High Commission for refugees in Geneva, Switzerland. She was also elected as judge of the UN International Criminal Court (ICC), the first Asian from a developing country to hold the post. She became the youngest presiding judge of a Regional Trial Court in the Philippines. She was also law professor at UP for about 10 years, teaching evening classes after office hours. She had written some 30 books on political science and law.

Then she became Agrarian Reform secretary in 1989. She was also called the “Iron Lady of Asia.” She was brilliant and articulate, she spoke English with international accent even if she was born and raised in the Philippines. In 1992, she ran for president but lost by a small margin to Fidel Ramos. She believed, as many Filipinos do, she was cheated. Three years later, she ran for the senate and won. She ran for president again in 1998 but lost, the popularity of actor-politician Joseph Estrada was unbeatable at this time. She ran for the senate again in 2001 but lost. However she won in 2004 and again in 2010. She was the first senator to decline an allocation of Pork Barrel fund because it was unconstitutional, she claimed. She was the only public servant who held positions from the three branches of our government: the judiciary, executive and legislative. Not to mention she was a member of the academe.

Political Life In 1988, President Corazon Aquino appointed her as head of the Commission on Immigration and Deportation, the agency then was marred with graft and corruption. She cleaned the place by dismissing fixers, transferring bribe-takers and filing administrative charges against corrupt employees. It was at this time she uttered the line, “I eat death threats for breakfast.” After successfully cleaning the bureau, Lung Cancer In 2014, she was diagnosed she earned the Ramon Magsaysay award in 1988 (Asia’s equivalent of with stage 4 lung cancer. She ran for president in 2016 despite the Nobel Prize).

5 cancer. It was obvious she was sick during the campaign period, she didn’t travel to the countryside and wasn’t seen for a month. During the presidential debate, she looked tired and frail. She needed assistance walking to the stage, she sat on a chair as the debate progressed. Several times in her speech, she was catching up for breath. She lost the election. She was rushed to the hospital in late May this year for pneumonia. In June, she was confined at the ICU. She was later discharged but in mid-September she was back at the hospital again. She died in her sleep on September 29, 2016. She was 71. On the last part of her political life, she connected to university students for creating “pick-up lines,” the language of the millennials. She blended with the young generation through her comic political lines, some were about love and courtship. She was the most sought-after speaker at university gatherings. Out of these “pick-up lines” she wrote two books: “Stupid is Forever” and “Stupid is Forevermore.” Both are bestsellers. The feisty and funny senator is gone. The senate of the Philippines will never be the same without her. Thank you, Madam. Thank you. We love you and will never forget you. Go now and rest in peace. The angels in heaven must be loving your pick-up lines. “What’s the plural form of rice?” Answer: “Extra rice.”

White House official remarks on Duterte's tirade

PH, U.S. ties remain strong

President Rodrigo Duterte's harsh words when speaking about the United States has no impact on the bilateral ties between the two countries. This view was shared by diplomats from both the Philippines and the U.S. who

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said in a press briefing that President Rodrigo Duterte's latest remarks against President Barack Obama is in conflict with the relationship between the Philippines and United States. Duterte told Obama to "go to hell" and the European Union to settle for purgatory during his speech at the opening of the joint Philippine-US military exercises. Duterte also said he intends to end the war games between the two countries during his term. Earnest said the 70-year Philippines-US alliance and

cooperation is built on strong people-to-people ties. The White House official cited the focus of the Obama administration on working with the Philippines to improve the livelihood of the Filipino people and to uphold their shared democratic values. Nevertheless, he noted that the US will not hesitate in raising its concerns over extrajudicial killings in the Philippines. On the issue of the joint military exercises, he said the US has not yet received an official request from Duterte or any other Filipino official to end the military activity.

said relationship between the two countries remains strong. Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. told CNN Philippines that there can be no wedge to that relationship. On Duterte’s pronouncement that he would forge alliances with Russia and China, Yasay said it does not have to mean parting ways with the U.S. He also downplayed Duterte’s tough remarks about the United Nations as he told delegates from the General Assembly member states to steer clear of the government's anti-drug

campaign. For his part, U.S. State Department Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner said their cooperation with the Philippine government remains strong and unabated. He also said his government would not interfere if the Philippines wants to pursue closer relations with either China or Russia. Meanwhile, political analysts said Duterte's unfriendly statements about the U.S. and his Cabinet's efforts to downplay them are sending mixed signals about his administration's foreign policy.

of the “Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program” (4Ps). Piñol said the proposed “Corporate Rice Farming System” marks the first step in the program of the agriculture department to establish an assured market for the Filipino rice farmers’ produce. The proposal would do away with the practice of traders and middlemen of controlling the buying price of the farmers’ produce. The Agriculture Secretary

also shared that the proposal would involve local government units (LGUs) who will finance the seeds and fertilizer requirements of their farmers. The 4Ps members and other poor families could acquire their rice supply from rice retail outlets called “bigasan ng masa” to be opened by the LGUs. The LGUs will then be paid by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) which handles the 4Ps rice supply program nationwide.

Self Exploration and Growth Through Writing

Little Me and the Big World by Rosalyn

Estoque

rosalynesto@gmail.com

O

ne of the greatest practices and routines I have taken away from travelling is journaling. It is a way of expressing and recording yourself through words. Writing for many may be difficult to grasp at first, but whether it be a few words, aimless rambles or short stories for ourselves, writing provides a grand opportunity for

growth and self exploration in ways that may not seem evidently obvious. What I love most about writing in a journal is that it is ALL for yourself. There is no need to edit or screen the words you write because through this practice you don’t write for another set of eyes

other than your own – or else that would be considered blogging or story telling. The things you write in a personal journal are raw, unfiltered, and open – at times these may be the stories or moments we are too afraid to share. In our day to day lives, we’re filtering everything we say

to others, whether we realize it or not. We wear masks to some extent around our family, friends, or our co-workers; essentially anyone we have contact with. But, in the act of writing something solely for ourselves, there is no mask between you, the page and your pen. So, let’s start writing! But, you don’t think you’re a writer? Well, guess what! You don’t have to be! But, wait, where do you even start? Good news, it doesn’t matter – anywhere! Just start. Even if it is just a line or two. Think about it, we all have a story or feeling bottled up inside, and the longer it stays there, the more inner trouble it brews. So to let it out. Even if it is just to yourself, I can guarantee you will feel much better after it is expelled from your system. With all this in mind, another aspect of personal writing that

I find essential is how it is the visual and physical representation of personal growth. We tend to celebrate the big moments and milestones in life and forget to look back and applaud how far we’ve come. I love going back to old writings, to see how much I’ve changed and matured through various life obstacles. Without consciously knowing, the more we write about what is in our mind, or happening in our day to day, the more we discover who are as an individual. It is like a scavenger hunt for your mind and the words and stories written down on paper are your findings. If still in the end all of this sounds a little off and uncomfortable for you, then that is fine, because everyone has their own way of delving into self discovery and growth. But trust me, once you start and find your own groove down this written path, it will be hard to stop.

THE WALK Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park, Edmonton, September 11, 2016 - WALK OF HOPE, a Fundraiser Project was held for the benefit of those who were sticken with OVARIAN CANCER. This event was joined by approximately 250300 participants and volunteers. Tau Gamma Phi/Sigma's Mission is to support other's Mission. Thus, together with our families and friends, we formed part of this quite noble endeavour. This annual event is one of the greatest manifestations of True Love and Care towards women who scarcely able to face the challenges of life while suffering from this deadly cancer. There was a little boy and two little girls who refused to be given a permanent ride though the entire journey or be carried by anybody else including their mothers; they chose to walk and had the five kilometers completed. Their determination to reach their goal and finished what they have started had genuinely served as the challenge to all who were about to get tired. THE HOPE The perpetuation of human species is one of the noblest gifts from the Creator. Basically, ladies, most of the times, become a completely grown and fulfilled women by giving birth or by sharing their blood and flesh to the new generation. Women were used as the receptacles--they should have been fully equipped with all the necessary elements of biological and physiological components to become capable of bearing life--ovaries shall have been completely free from any unhealthy issues--cancer free conditions.

A healthy life must have always been derived from a healthy mother. It must be our hope! Giving birth is not always the guarantee of life. Without hope, living this life would also become an absolute illusion. Hence, we will just continue living without seeing its importance. That is why, our women must always be

given due respect, true love and care, and protection. Alas! There is this group of concerned individuals who, in one way or another, have been initiating this "Walk of Hope Project" in order to help and save the lives of those women who are afflicted with ovarian cancer. While it is true that cancer kills when ignored or not immediately treated; it is also true that this walk would properly educate people to become aware how to promote an ovarian-cancerfree society. This project does not only bring us volunteers and supporters alike to complete the five kilometres walk, but rather, giving us enough knowledge and informations that there are women who truly need to be comforted, so they would also have the secured hope ahead of them. This project is worth to be supported in order to encourage and gather more concerned individuals to become volunteers, donors, and participants in the future.

The pulse of the Filipino Community in Alberta, Canada

September - October 2016

Alberta’s First Filipino Council visits birthplace in Pilgrimage 2016 by Julito R. Reyes Alberta- NWT State Council Past State Deputy 1999-2001 Former Master of Fourth Degree 2004 - 2008

(From February 19, 2001 to April 8, 2001 – Nazareno Council No. 2904, the first Filipino council in Alberta – NWT, was formed only within 51 days. From then on, this council has become active, vibrant, and creative council in Edmonton and area. With its active membership supported by their wives, it sponsors many activities like a Thanksgiving Community dinner, traditional Filipino religious celebrations like Simbang Gabi (nine-evening Masses before Christmas), Lenten Pabasa (chanting of the Passion of Christ), Novena & Fiesta of Nazareno (January 9th), and hosting a golf tournament to raise funds for Charities in Edmonton and area to mention a few. It has received numerous recognitions from Supreme and State Councils for its magnificent programs year after year.) In the summer of 2015, a 15th Charter Council Anniversary Committee was formed by Grand Knight Robert Croteau with past state deputy Lito Reyes acting as consultant to plan a year-round council activities. Bong Estoque and Teddy Tuazon were appointed Co- Chairs of the committee. Lito Reyes chaired the Pilgrimage 2016 committee as its final activity with Bong Estoque, Teddy Tuazon and DGK Rolly T. Marcos as members. The Pilgrimage 2016 committee started its early planning in earnest as early as the summer of 2015. With DATTCO, Inc., a motor coach company based in Connecticut that prepared the US itineraries while WestJet handled the flights of 51 pilgrims from Edmonton to La Guardia New York and return. On Thursday of August 11th in the early morning at

five o’clock, the 51 pilgrims in their crimson red pilgrimage windbreaker jackets finally assembled at Edmonton International Airport to begin their pilgrimage journey to the US. Arriving in the tarmac of La Guardia, New York and unable to disembark for almost 4 hours because of a gate problem, the pilgrims finally made it to their hotel in Meriden, CT around 11:30 PM after stopping for a quick supper. The following day, their pilgrimage started with a guided tour of the Cathedral of St. Joseph, Hartford, CT, a celebration of the Holy Eucharist and ended in the afternoon with guided tours of Mark Twain Museum and Harriet Beecher Stowe Center. It concluded with a sumptuous seafood dinner. The much awaited day came on Saturday morning when the pilgrims motored down to New Haven, CT to visit the Knights’

headquarters and chapel, the Museum and St. Mary’s Church with guided tours for their full day’s activities. They found the tall headquarters impressive, the chapel so religiously and artistically designed, the Museum full of historical and pictorial stories to tell, and finally, the emotionally charged visit to the birthplace of the Knights of Columbus, the St. Mary’s Church. Inside the church, they saw the tomb of the Founder, Fr. Michael J. McGivney sheltered in the corner of the church that has become the shrine for pilgrim knights, the church pews assigned to different jurisdictional States and the ever historical basement where Fr. McGivney, a twentynine – year- old curate well known “among the young goahead men of the city” called his first meeting of 24 Catholic men in 1882 to discuss the formation of a fraternal benefit society. This obscured meeting marked the foundation of what became the largest body of Catholic laymen in the world. Four months after this meeting, the group adopted the name “Knights of Columbus”. To make it a complete and memorable visit to St. Mary’s Church, the newly elected council officers for fraternal year 20162017 were installed once again to signify the very importance of the site. The present council officers including their proxies decked in their resplendent ceremonial robes were installed by Past State Deputy, Julito R. Reyes assisted by District Deputy, Manuel Ibasco and ceremonial Warden, Teddy Tuazon who were also in their colorful robes befitting the occasion. The newly installed council officers (proxies included) for Columbian Year 2016 – 2017 were: Rolando T. Marcos, Grand Knight; DGK Rodolfo Arcilla (proxy for Armand Bernabe); Chancellor Joel Gonzales (proxy for Robert Croteau); FS Ferdinand

At 5 PM the Holy Eucharist was celebrated at the main altar led by Father John Paul Walker, OP, Rector of the church and a member of the local Father McGivney Council No. 10705. He introduced the group to the audience to be the first council of pilgrim knights and their ladies to come from Canada to St. Mary’s Church ever. As is customary when they visited churches, the group presented the Rector with a generous monetary donation commemorating their memorable visit. On Sunday morning, the group motored to the National Shrine of Divine Mercy at Stockbridge, MA for their whole day visit to their church and surrounding places at the Shrine. It sits on a large tract of land with a colourful and historic church building, life sized stations of the cross and many more religious places. After spending a full day at the Shrine, the group departed for Secaucus, New Jersey to call it a day. Luckily for some pilgrims who met friendly NJ Filipino organizers at the hotel, they were invited to an evening of Filipino entertainment and festivals at a nearby New Jersey Convention Center. It was an unexpected cultural Filipino entertainment enjoyed by all in attendance. Monday morning started the day with a trip to Manhattan, a tour of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and ended at the bright lights of the Times Square area in the evening. The next day was a tour of the 9-11 Memorial Museum, Central Park, Top of the Rock

for a great view of New York City from the Observation Deck and attended a Holy Mass at St. Patrick Cathedral at 5 PM and a visit to the church’s crypt where deceased cardinals and bishops were interred. In between these tours, the group managed to do some personal shopping at Century 21 and at high- end stores in New York city. This tour was dubbed as the council’s “Pilgrimage 2016” in celebrating the Jubilee Year of Mercy as proclaimed by Pope Francis and celebrating the council’s 15th Charter Council Anniversary. Pilgrimage 2016 meant many things to many pilgrims. Most of the pilgrims experienced feelings of spiritual reawakening, reinvigorated their cultural and literary interests, learned a lot about the Knights of Columbus from the Museum displays, enormous feeling of elation of being at St. Mary’s Church basement, the birthplace of the Knights of Columbus and seeing the vast spiritual land area of the Shrine of the Divine Mercy, Tony Briones, a pilgrim knight wrote that “My journey with the Knights started at my prime age in the Philippines and now the pilgrimage to St. Mary’s Church , the birthplace of the Knights of Columbus, was not only a historical experience but it also enriched knowledge about my faith.” Sam Llamas, the official group photographer called the pilgrimage, “The supreme experience in my life as a knight”. As a group, we became a team player. Kudos is due to the organizers, Lito Reyes, Teddy Tuazon, Bong Estoque and Rolly T. Marcos because they did a superb job in organizing the whole pilgrimage – a thorough researched of itineraries, wise choice of restaurants, and reasonable overall cost! Thank you, brother Knights. My wife Minda and I salute you” Rustee Guanlao commented, “ Well planned and executed trip, visiting churches & K of C buildings educational & spiritual, new comradeship established, gained more friends and thank you to the 4 amigos - organizers for job superbly done!” Rudy Valencia echoed the same sentiment expressed by Rustee Guanlao and this tour was the most and rewarding experience that he & wife Olette will remember for many, many years to come. This Pilgrimage Tour would be long remembered and cherished by the 51 pilgrim knights and their ladies as their “Tour of a Lifetime.” They give thanks and full credits to its huge success from the blessing of our Lord Jesus, the Black Nazarene and the guidance and protection from Knights of Columbus Founder, Blessed Father Michael J. McGivney.

Attention shoppers: 100 days until Christmas.

Lesson-Driven Perspective Lito Mendoza Velasco litovelasco65@yahoo.ca

onstant communication with a friend, Natasha Carr of Consolidated Credit Counselling of Canada has brought me a lot of lessons that I can also transfer to our readers, especially to those who have been encountering financial constraints. For instance, Santa Claus

is enjoying the remnants of his summer vacation while Canadians adjust to the realization, there is only one hundred days left until Christmas signaling now is the perfect time to start to focus on your holiday budget. “Every year, Canadians spend hundreds to thousands of dollars during the holiday season. Many just accept the fact; they will overspend this time of year and deal with it later. It doesn’t have to be this way. A little frugality this time of year can go a long way,” says Jeffrey Schwartz, executive director, Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada. Although now would be a good time to put some money aside for holiday shopping, the majority of Canadian shoppers leave their holiday purchases to the very last minute. And last

minute shopping is not cheap. When consumers head to the malls in a panic searching for gifts for that special someone as well as for family and friends, on average they spent $1,164 during the holidays last year. And consumers, who preferred shopping from the comfort of their smart device, broke online shopping record and charged on average $1,103 last year. “I understand it can be difficult to think about budgeting for the holiday season when the grass is green outside and there is no hint of winter in the air. However if you start to budget now, you will be on top of your debt management and less stressed when your holidays bills come through the mail in January,” says Schwartz. To prevent a debt disaster in the New Year, Consolidated

Credit offers the following tips: 1. Create your holiday budget today. Although budgeting is something Canadians should do all year, it is a good idea to create a separate holiday fund for gifts and the like this time of year. This will help to stretch your dollars further during the holidays.

it. And remember the holidays are not about who can buy the best gifts, it’s about spending time with family and friends.

These impressive accomplishments, for a short period of time, are unacceptable to President Duterte's critics...

The 100 Days of Duterte's Administration The Republic of Adobo by Rod

t all started with a bang! And the 16 million Filipinos who voted for Duterte, have been looking ahead to a more progressive country in Asia. Not all have been clamoring for a change. And the many changes that Duterte has instituted benefit the millions of Filipinos. And at the same time this on going rally for a change has led to the irritation of his critics. On record, there more than 50 changes made for the past 100 days, a feat only Duterte himself, his followers could claim. To make more precise, Duterte is the only president who has done many changes for a short period of time. At the very beginning, the campaign against drugs has been severe after finding out that the drug problem in the Philippines is deeper than what the president has thought of, claiming that the Philippine is a narco-state. This had led to many killings of drug protectors, pushers and users, and the massive discovery of many

shabu factories in the New Bilibid Prisons and in the various parts of the country, mostly in Metro Manila and Luzon, especially in Pampanga where the police discovered old and new shabu factories. And as the result of this massive campaign, Duterte has instituted many rehab centres even the other institutions and the church offered services to rehabilitate the drug users and pushers. The campaign for a change followed by the move against contratualization under the leadership of Secretary Bello who is fighting hard against the business tycoons and big corporate owners to end the "endo"; and when Gina Lopez, Secretary of Department of Environment and Natural Resources, investigated illegal minings, illegal loggers and illegal fishing at the Laguna de Bay. She said: "Where there is mining, there is poverty."; MRT has increased the number of units and let the public buy their tickets in some outlets in the various malls; Philippine telecommunications have been updated, providing 911 and WIFI to the airports, seaports and other public places. And the new benefits for the OFWs and the returning Filipinos from abroad. And the cleansing of the most corrupt departments, like Bureau of Internal Revenue, Bureau of

Unfortunately, Duterte's critics, mostly from the losers' political camp and religious groups, claimed that these achievements are of smokes and mirrors, trying discredit the positive effect of his campaign against drugs and narcotics. And at the very length of their protest, the critics want him to resign, and side by side plotting to have a coup. Change is difficult for some Filipinos because many changes cross the hard wires of the status quo. Some of Duterte's qoutes Custom and LTO is underway; which were not included when and with Mayor Joseph Estrada, New York Times published some a former critic of Duterte, is of the hard hitting words against determined to clean the city, making Divisoria and other parts of the city free from garbage, sidewalk vendors and parked cars; and to top them all, to temporarily cut the economic umbilical cord with the United Sates, promoting more to connect with other powerful nations for economic, social and cultural initiatives. And at the very beginning, the move to change the way the government is being governed, Federalism has been gaining ground as a better alternative in governance. And note this quote: " Courage knows no limit, cowardice does. And the latest Social Weather Survey, Duterte gets 67% What else can you expect from Digong? The return of the death penalty? The pulse of the Filipino Community in Alberta, Canada

The true beauty of a home isn’t in the finishings. It’s in the beginnings. Maybe the reason so many suburbs end up looking the same is because not enough imagination goes in at the very start, when it’s brains, not brick and beams, that get to shape what’s to come. Southeast Edmonton’s newest community broke ground differently. And it’s showing no sign of stopping. Diverse architecture is everywhere at The Hills at Charlesworth. Duplexes share the block with single-family homes; semi-detached units face row housing; modernism mingles with traditional design. And still a common theme prevails, a cohesiveness forged from the community’s vision for sustainable living. Here, that vision isn’t limited to innovations within the home. It extends to a multipurpose green space called the Sustainability Plaza, where, among a world of native plant species, you’ll find things like solar-powered Wi-Fi, hybrid lights that run off both sun and wind, and a 200-metre ice ribbon for you and your family to skate or walk on depending on the time of year. That’s the beauty of doing something right, right from the start.
