The Best of Sydney

W

hether you’re a history or culture buff or a plain pleasure-seeker, Sydney, Australia has everything to offer quite enough to keep you occupied and at the end of your journey you won’t want to leave. The state capital of New South Wales with a population od 4,504,469, Sydney is the largest and most popular city in Australia. Historically, the city is the site of the first English settlement on the continent in 1788 after Capt. James Cook landed in Port Botany and claimed the land for the British Empire. However, long before the Europeans turned up Sydney was home to the Guringai aboriginal people. Sydney is endowed with natural beauty, stunning climate, inspiring arts and culture, and pleasant people. Its icons and famous places make Sydney so ... Sydney.

Most visible iconic landmark of Sydney is the Sydney Opera House, designed by Danish architect John Utzon and constructed between 1959 and 1973. Considered one of the architectural masterpiece of the 20th century, the Sydney Opera House showcases everything from ballet to opera to Shakespeare, playing host to over 2,500 performances and events each year. An hour-long behindthe-scenes guided tours reveal the inner workings of this renowned icon. Contrasting with the Opera House convex sails is the dramatic steel presence of Sydney Harbour Bridge. You can climb via catwalks and ladders to the 134-meter high apex of Sydney’s famous “coathanger” and savour the panoramic view of the Harbour. Or you can just drive across it or simply gaze at it from

any angle and for sure you’re bound to love it. Explore “The Rocks” and Circular Quay on foot, Sydney’s oldest quarter because this area was the first port of call for early European settlers. The Rocks with cobbled laneways, old brick warehouses and historic pubs, modern eateries and contemporary galleries has a fine collection of boutique shops and heritage buildings plus the colourful Rocks Open Market. Sydney is home to world’s most well-known beaches, Bondi Beach and Manly patrolled daily by professional lifeguards. The Chinatown of Sydney is a lively district close to the city centre, offering an eclectic mix of mouthwatering cuisine and groovy Asian boutiques and food/ convenience stores. Quite a busy place making it so hard to find a parking spot. We enjoyed the Royal Botanical Gardens, an oasis of 3o hectares of natural parklands in the heart of the city, and the Sydney Aquarium, where we walked underwater and discovered the largest collection of all-Australian aquatic life. You could come face to face with sharks and giant rays in the Great Barrier Reef habitat. To the west of Sydney lies the UNESCO world heritage listed Blue Mountains located at Katoomba, noted for striking scenery, rainforests and wildlife. It takes about 2 hours by car to get to the famous Blue Mountains - called Blue because the eucalyptus trees that cover their slopes make them look literally blue. After viewing the wilderness of the Blue Mountains from the windy “Flat Rock”, also called the Kings Tableland, we had a relaxing bushwalk to the most breathtaking waterfalls in the area, the Wentworth Falls. We stopped at the Scenic World and rode on the Scenic Railway, world’s steepest incline railway and returned by riding “The Cableway” to the top of the canyon where the mountains are best seen in all its glory. From Echo Point we viewed the famous and legendary “The Three Sisters” rock formations. After five days we left Sydney with a heavy heart.

Noynoy’s love fest

P

Noynoy: That’s funny. Hey, just call me Noynoy. Well, you know, what actually kept me going was that I was right behind you. Ha ha ha… Sabrina: Naughty, naughty boy. Hmm… Noynoy: Just kidding. Ha ha ha… Seriously, I want to invite you to visit my country as my personal guest. I’ll roll the red carpet for you. Sabrina: Oh, how nice of you, Noynoy. But, with your busy schedule, how can you have time with me? Noynoy: I have all the time for you, Sabrina, cuz I have a Vice President who’s busy conducting a survey on whether to bury Marcos at the Heroes’ Cemetery or not. I have an Executive Secretary who’s busy writing executive orders, presidential proclamations, memoranda, and nasty letters for me. I have a “Chief Troubleshooter” who does all the dirty work for me including trouble-shooting my Porsche 911 twin-turbo and bullet-proof Lexus SUV. I have three media men whose job is to tell conflicting stories to confuse the opposition. I have a young speechwriter whose job is confuse the audience. And I have two “shooting buddies” who advise me on politics and security matters. Sabrina: Gee, that’s called delegation! What’s left for you to do, then? Noynoy: Not a whole lot, Sabrina. At night I have nothing else to do at my Bahay Pangarap but play with my XBOX 360. Sabrina: No kidding! That’s my favorite past time, too! Noynoy: I also love to drive my Porsche 911 at 200 kilometers per hour. Sabrina: No kidding! I love fast cars, too! Noynoy: Hmm… Do you also like shooting? Sabrina: Yes! I love shooting… especially drug mules! Just kidding. He he he… Noynoy: Hmm… Do you like joy riding in the middle of the night, too?

resident Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III is indeed a man on the fast lane, literally and figuratively. But driving his Porsche 911 twin-turbo at 200 kilometers per hour isn’t fast enough to catch up with his love life… or should I say, love fest? Yes, after he broke up with Shalani Soledad last September 2010, he was seen dating Barbie Palagos, Trish Roque, Liz Uy, and, recently, Len Lopez. But the buzz going around Manila is that Len has dumped Noynoy or vice versa. Either way, Noynoy is once again the most eligible bachelor in the country today. But being the “man on the fast lane,” not having anyone to go joy riding with him in his Porsche in the wee hours of the morning could really drive the man crazy. So, it did not come as a surprise that when he was in Singapore recently on a state visit, his wandering eyes – like the crosshairs on his gun – locked in on a beautiful young woman. Indeed, Sabrina Chua was his type of a woman – slim, chinita, and beautiful. Sabrina is a news anchor of a Singaporebased news channel. But like in the past, Noynoy has always denied the scuttlebutts about his love fest. But like always, they turned out to be the truth. Simply put, Noynoy couldn’t outsmart the Pinoyparazzi. They’re just too cunning in following Noynoy’s escapades. Well, here’s one Pinoyparrazo’s account of a telephone conversation between Noynoy and Sabrina: Noynoy: Hello, Sabrina? Sabrina: Yes, this is Sabrina. Who’s this? Noynoy: This is Noynoy. Remember me? Sabrina: Oh, hello, Mr. President! What a pleasant surprise. Of course, I remember you. How can I forget a 51-year old man climbing up 24 floors? I’m amazed! How did you do it? Were you on steroids? Joke only. He he he…

Filipino Journal

Sabrina: Yes! I love it! I love it! I love the rush! Noynoy: Me, too! Sabrina: We have a lot of things in common, Noynoy. We’re compatible. Noynoy: Yes! Let’s meet this weekend then. We’ll go joy riding to the hacienda. Sabrina: And then what, my dear? Noynoy: Well… uh… We’ll have lots of fun! Let’s do it! Sabrina: Uh… I don’t know, Noynoy. Somebody told me that you’re a chickboy and have a new girlfriend every two months. Noynoy: That’s true but I just have a feeling that you’re the right woman to be my First Lady, Sabrina. Sabrina: How nice, Noynoy. Does that mean I’ll go shopping and jet setting like what Imelda used to do? Noynoy: Yes! I’ll even buy you 3,000 pairs of shoes. Then you can go shopping in New York and dine at Le Cirque like what Gloria used to do. Would you come this weekend then? Pleeeeze. Sabrina: Actually, I’m already here in Manila, Noynoy. Noynoy: No kidding! Where? Sabrina: Well, I’m here on stage with a mutual friend. Here she is. She wants to talk to you. Noynoy: Hello. Who’s this? Shalani: This is Shalani, Noynoy! Noynoy: Shalani!!! What are you doing with Sabrina? Shalani: Sabrina is our special guest in “Willing Willie” tonight and your conversation with her is being aired right now. Right, Willie? Here’s Willie, Noynoy. Willie: Hi, Noynoy! Welcome to “Willing Willie.” Hey, you wanna join us? Noynoy: Stop it! I want to talk to Sabrina. Sabrina: Sorry, Noynoy, but I can’t meet you… ever. Noynoy: Why??? Sabrina: Because Shalani told me all about you. Good-bye. Noynoy: Ay naku. Naloko na!

One person, one vote, many ways

by R. Reis Pagtakhan, LL.B., B.A. (Hons.) rrp@aikins.com

IMMIGRATION LAW: Can an illegal alien in the U.S. apply to immigrate to Canada?

T

here are many cases where individuals who are illegally in the U.S. or another country want to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents. Many of these individuals are scared to apply because they do not want to be sent “back home”. While the general rule is that a person should apply for permanent residency in the country in which they are a citizen or legal resident, certain illegal aliens in the U.S. (and other countries) can apply to immigrate to Canada.

Is there a minimum time period the person must have been in the U.S.? It is not necessary that the person have actually been in the U.S. for one year. It is only necessary that the person have been “lawfully admitted” for one year. For instance, if a person got a one year visa to the U.S. but, after 6 months in the U.S., had that visa taken away, he would still be able to apply to immigrate to Canada.

Who can apply for Canadian permanent residency while illegal in the U.S.? Persons who have been “lawfully admitted” to the U.S. for at least one year can apply for permanent residence in a Canadian Visa Office in the U.S. As a result, if a person was initially “lawfully admitted” to the U.S. for one year but overstayed their U.S. visa and are currently illegal in the U.S., that person can apply to immigrate to Canada.

If a Canadian immigration interview is needed, will the illegal alien have to go “back home”? If a Canadian immigration interview is needed, the illegal alien in the U.S. would normally be interviewed at the Canadian Visa Office in the U.S. that is processing the application unless “program integrity” reasons dictate otherwise. If the Canadian immigration application is denied, Canada will not require the illegal alien to leave the U.S.

While Canada will not require the person to leave the U.S., being in the U.S. illegally here are more ways to cast does have consequences. or the Holy Week, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has made the “pasyon” (chanting of the Lord’s passion) available online trough their “visitaiglesia” website www.visitaiglesia.net. Msgr. Pedro Quitorio III, Media Office Director of the CBCP, said the online version of the “pasyon” or “pabasa” is the most highly recommended music by the Catholic Church to the faithful as it helps the faithful better reflect on the passion, death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The “Visita Iglesia” website is a multimedia presentation that features 14 shrines and pilgrimage churches corresponding with the 14 Stations of the Cross with reflections given by priests. The website also features catechesis and reflections of the bishops and priests for Lent, Holy Week and Easter as well as the traditional Seven Last Words, and the “Pasyon.” “Pabasa” is an old, timetested Holy Week tradition that has remained well-preserved particularly in the provinces. In recent years, the melodies of popular tunes are sometimes used to make the chanting of the Biblical passages sound more interesting, lively, and appealing particularly, to the young. The CBCP official said the project targets Filipinos abroad and the sick so they may also have the chance to observe Holy Week wherever they are.

Sisler students to appear on Dragon’s Den

O

n April 26th, four aspiring Sisler students are looking to kick start their company by being on an episode of Dragon’s Den, where aspiring entrepreneurs pitch their business concepts and products to a panel of Canadian business moguls who have the cash and the know-how make it happen. Forget Me Not Media is an independent media services company operated by four highly skilled female entrepreneurs from Sisler High School. The company is made up of Alexa Lachuta, Abbie Barzaga, Regina Resosso, and Anastasia Elexeev. Three of the girls will be graduating in June and are planning on taking on contracts in the summer, with the hopes of looking to take new clients shortly thereafter. The students have no postsecondary level training. All their skills proudly are from cutting edge ICT and MST courses offered at Sisler High School, in Winnipeg’s North End. Their pitch focuses on a student media company (similar to the College Pro Painter approach with lower prices, professional quality).

They are also presenting a game designed by Game Design and Development students of Sisler High School. Forget Me Not Media provides high quality media branding, at a student’s rate. Each member of the team offers a unique and creative mind that is, in itself, the primary base of their company. The girls are able to create every media branding needed by a client— from posters, event tickets, letter heads, CD/ DVD’s, websites, videos and company template games only some of them. The girls are even planning on launching their own game for mobile devices in 2012. The Manitoba Filipno Business Council (MFBC) proudly has the motto to Progress, Prosper, Pinoy! Forget Me Not Media is a fabulous example how hard work can pay off into a business opportunity/venture. The MFBC was delighted to give Forget Me Not Media advice on their sales pitch recommendations when they step into the Dragon’s Den. For further information, please do not hesitate to visit their website - forgetmenotmedia.ca

2011 Bb. Pilipinas-Universe is beauty and brains combined

T

he newly-crowned Bb. Pilipinas-Universe who will represent the country in the 2011 Miss Universe pageant in Sao Paolo, Brazil in September is obviously beauty and brains combined. Born on May 16, 1986, Shamcey Supsup is an only child of Marcelina, an engineer and Timoteo, a farmer. She graduated salutatorian of her high school class at the Mindanao State University (MSU). She finished Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree

in Architecture at the University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman, Quezon City and topped the licensure board exams for architect in June 2010. Aside from the Bb. PilipinasUniverse crown, the General Santos beauty also won special awards such as Best in Talent, Miss Philippine Air Lines and Miss Cream Silk. She bested 39 other candidates in the 46th edition of the beauty contest. This early, Supsup said she’s feeling the pressure as others tend to

compare her to 2010 Bb. PilipinasUniverse Maria Venus Raj, who won fourth runner up in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant held in Las Vegas, Nevada USA. After her reign, she said she and her friends plan to form their own architectural firm. She said she does not see herself entering politics or showbiz in the future. She added that people should focus on discipline and should not rely on government for solutions to end social problems.

Young actor meets untimely death in vehicular accident

Y

oung actor AJ Perez died early morning of Sunday, April 17 after sustaining multiple head injuries when the vehicle he was riding met an accident in Tarlac highway.

Perez, an ABS-CBN “Kapamilya” talent, was rushed to a hospital in Tarlac but didn’t make it. The 18-year old budding actor was on his way to Manila from a show in Dagupan, Pangasinan aboard an ABS-CBN van together with his father and four others. Initial police investigation showed that his van tried to overtake a trailer truck when it hit the coming Partas provincial bus along McArthur Highway in Barangay San Julian, Tarlac. In a statement, ABS-CBN Corporate Communications Bong Osorio urges everyone to pray for the eternal repose of AJ’s soul and for the

family and loved ones he left behind. The untimely death of Perez was a big shock to the public, more so to his family and close friends in and out of show business. The late Perez has done various commercials and has appeared on “ASAP,” “Abt Ur Luv,” “Lobo,” “Ang Tanging Pamilya,” among others. The Star Magic talent has been tapped to become one of the leading men in the TV series, “Sabel.” The late actor’s family has decided to open the wake to everyone, especially to his fans. Public viewing starts at 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 12 midnight on Monday April 19 at LaSalle Greenhills chapel in San Juan.

Fil-Am takes title roles in new fairy tales films

Y

oung actress Hailee Steinfeld was recently signed on to do the lead roles in two fairy tales films namely “Sleeping Beauty” and “Romeo and Juliet.”. The 14-year old FilipinoAmerican who was nominated Best Supporting Actress in the 2011 Oscars, will play a new version of the fairy tale told from Sleeping Beauty’s dream world point of view. Producers have yet to announce who will play Romeo opposite Steinfeld.

The 40-year-old diva said she is now 7 weeks pregnant and is not craving for any particular food. She admitted though that she likes to see the faces of actors Dingdong Dantes and Richard Gutierrez and even asked for their pictures. The singer-actress will be turning 41 on April 22. She said her wish is for her baby to be healthy regardless of gender. If it is a boy, she said she will name it after her husband, who is Herminio Jhay Alcasid Jr. in real life. She has not yet made up her mind though for the name of their baby if it will be a girl. Alcasid has 2 daughters from fter weeks of keeping silent, revealed on GMA 7 musical variety showbiz couple Regine show “Party Pilipinas” that they are his first marriage to former Australian beauty queen Michelle van Eimeren. Velasquez and Ogie Alcasid expecting their first baby.

Regine, Ogie expect first baby

A

For “Romeo and Juliet,” Italian Carlo Carlie of the 1993 crime drama “Flight of the Innocent” directs. Some showbiz watchers said Steinfeld resembles Olivia Hussey who played Juliet in 1968. Steinfeld’s age at 14 also matched Juliet’s age in the classic play. The shooting will start soon in Italy. Steinfeld’s maternal grandfather is Filipino. The young Hollywood upstart gained the critics nods after her first role as Mattie Ross in “True Grit.”

Winnipegger receives national award for community involvement

R

ochelle de Guzman Buenaventura of Winnipeg is one of the 16 awardees of the International Professional Entertainment Network based in Toronto. Buenaventura, nominated by her friend in that city, is being recognized because of her endeavors in helping fellow Filipinos in Canada through community involvement thereby impacting somebody’s life. The prestigious annual event, called “The 2011 Most Beautiful Filipinos in Canada was held this year on March 19th at Churchill Ballroom, Delta-Chelsea Inn in Toronto. The criteria for selection are based on active community leadership, entrepreneurial ability, high academic achievements, professional integrity, being active in entertainment and had held beauty titles. Among this year’s awardees include Fermer Santos, the first Mutya ng Pilipinas Canada; Janice Lozano, an entertainer and celebrity talk show host from Vancouver; and Johnny Quiambao, a Scarborough resident, was a former board member in the 3rd District of Pampanga. Rochelle is a well-known figure in the Filipino community in Winnipeg. She is the current president of the Guimbanian Association of Manitoba, a non-profit and charitable

organization that works to improve the quality of lives of our kababayans living in Canada and in the Philippines by addressing its rapidly expanding and diversed social, cultural and financial needs. Through her leadership, the Guimbanian Association of Manitoba maintains the promotion and preservation of the culture and tradition of their hometown, Guimba, Nueva Ecija. The officers and members have been involved in all facets of community works which benefit all especially the younger generation. “We as Guimbanians, we have a mission in our lives to let our next generation of younger Guimbanians to realize the best connection with our hometown in the Philippines. And through the youth’s involvement, they become aware that helping our kababayans is one of the mandate of our associations,” says Rochelle. Among the projects of the association is the “Operation Damayan”- “Pamaskong Handog”, a gift-giving activity of Radyo Natin Guimba.Throught this activiity, a yearly donation is sent by Guimbanian Association to their kababayans in Guimba. These donations provide special Christmas gift to more than 1,000 underprivileged families and seasonal farm workers.

Scholarships are also awarded to qualified less fortunate students who reside in Guimba. The association also supported financially in the construction and completion of the new rectory convent which was built in the early 1940’s. Aside from the association, Rochelle presently assists in the social and fundraising activities of the Gendringer Group, “The Hollanders”, composed of Guimbanians who worked in the fashion industry in Netherlands in the 1970’s. Rochelle de Guzman Buenaventura, a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at the Sacred Heat Academy in Guimba, was an active student and this led to some of her unforgetable experiences. In 1968-69, she competed for the “Bb.Bulaklak” (Miss Flower) sponsored by the Bulaklak Magazine owned by Elizalde Family and she won “Bb. Bulaklak ng Wika and 1st Princess. In the same ear, she won as “Queen of the Summer Festival” at the Corregidor College. A change in her life took over when a Dutch Missionary, Rev. Fr. Henry de Hey, came to Guimba to recruit workers in Netherland. She joined the other sixtytwo other Guimbanians, known today as Gendringen Bathch 1969-7972, to work at the Berghaus Company in Netherlands. She enjoy her stay with kababayans in Netherlands. In 1972, a new challenge came when she immigated to Canada

and met the love of her life, Mel Buenaventura of Malolos Bulacan. They got married on June 19, 1976 and started making their lives in Winnipeg. Rochelle and Mel worked together and got involved in business. In 1978, Rochelle took up a courses on floral design and baking skills and this led to set-up Greenland Florist and One-Stop Wedding Lounge, the 1st Filipino flower shop in Winnipeg in 1980. And during the 1981 Bb. Pilipinas Canada Pageant in Winnipeg, Rochelle and Mel were given a chance to participate in the pageant as flower sponsors for the winners. In 1992, she won a bronze medal for her floral design at the Spring Beauty floral design at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. Not satisfied with her career, she took up secretarial medical course at Success Institute and in 1990, she prepared herself to face another challenge when she enrolled and studied Gerontology at Red River College. In 1993, the husband and wife team owned and operated the first group home and they cared for older and infirmed clients. Outside her business for caring, Rochelle became a group leader and event coordinator of the Happy Go Lucky Dance Group in 1995. The group was involved in the fundraising

April 20 - May 5, 2011 event of Gawad Kalinga. In 1995 they opened the 2nd group home for the aged, infirmed and mentally challenged individuals. And this led to be elected as the treasurer of the Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg, Inc. She became the Junior Queen Valentine of the FSGWI. It seems that growth in business never stopped and in 2003, they opened their 3rd group home. And with her active participation in dancing competition, Rochelle and her dancing group had won numerous trophies from the local dance contests. In 2019, she became the Queen Valentine of the Gendringen Group. Rochelle says: “ I believe I have achieved my aspirations through strong determination, hard work, perseverance and above all with the guidance and blessings of the Lord Almighty.” This awardee, Rochelle De Guzman Buenvaventua, is a loving, generous, ambitious, “carinosa” compassionate, supportive and with a good sense of humour. No doubt, Rochelle is beautiful, insideout. “With the help and support of my husband, our commitment to help our community is first and foremost; and our unconditional support to our kababayans in Guimba has been our enjoyment in life,” Rochelle says with a smile.

A souvenir pose for all the winners after the awarding ceremony at Churchill Ballroom, Delta/Chelsea Hotel.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

Horoscope This month will be a normal as far as health is. There may be some drowsy feeling and overall unhealthy feelings but you may understand that it’s all in the mind and exactly based on your physique.

Stress will cause some problems in this month. You’ll have too many or too important objectives that will constantly keep you active and demand effort, without allowing you time to relax.

This month will be rather peaceful and quiet at work. Even if there’s a lot of work, your attitude towards it will make everything seem simpler.

The couple relationship, love and romanticism will rely on communication a great deal in April 2011. You can now write love notes you can have long conversations with the dear one.

April 2011 will be gestation weeks, in which you’ll dwell on all sorts of plans, trying to get everything ready for future development.

You’ll be very energetic, no reason to complain about that. Except that you seem to have a hectic period in April 2011, and it can take its toll on your health.

You’ll go through a very busy, hard, stressful period. You’ll have a lot of work, or you’ll face new and complicated situations that will require special effort to be solved.

You will find this month very busy in terms of family matters and an expansion in family as well as a celebration in the family would be possible too.

April 2011 will not be very favorable to health. Psychologically, you’ll be tense, your immunity will be low, and the physical resistance, weaker than usual.

You need a lot of rest and a very well organized schedule, with no great efforts. Preoccupations related to research, investigations, mysteries, and esoteric disciplines will be beneficial to you.

These weeks will be beneficial to you from several points of view. First, they will stimulate your creativity, then, they’ll help you stand out, and last, they will provide favorable opportunities.

For your career you will find very good advantages from next month. You will see a more stable and steady phase from next month too.

Just Because They’re WheelchairBound?

M

any people see wheelchairbound and other physically challenged individuals as people who do nothing but eat and sleep and stroll around malls and other places; worse, as dependent residents of nursing care homes who just watch TV most of the day and wait

for nurses and aides to feed and do other stuff for them. What they seem not to realize is that many of these individuals with physical disabilities have also creative interests and try as much as they can to pursue these. Try sitting down with an elderly or a physically challenged and spend a considerable amount of time talking with him—I mean, really talk with him and listen to his stories, and you will surely be in for a surprise—that he too has lived (or even still living) a colorful life, as animated as or even more interesting than yours. You will find also that, despite his physical disabilities, his brain just like yours may have strong streaks of creativity that he wants to pursue and express in whatever way he can. Let’s take for example Kyle Peters, a 23-year-old lively and sociable lad residing at Riverview Health Centre where I work. Kyle is suffering from Duchenne muscular dystrophy – “a severe form of muscular dystrophy characterized by rapid progression of muscle degeneration, leading to loss of ambulation.” According to Kyle, he was four when doctors found out that he has the said affliction. He said he was 13 when he began to use the wheelchair. Only about two years ago, he could still use his hands to draw and write; however, as the disease progressed, he eventually lost full functions of his arms. Kyle said that when he could still use his hands, he wrote poems and drew a lot. Poetry and art are two of his passions. Add to that, playing video games, watching action movies, watching hockey, and listening to Rock and Hip-hop music. When Kyle learned that I write for a local newspaper, he asked me if I could publish some of his poems and drawings. I said why not, but I told him that I had a better idea: Instead of simply publishing some of his works, I would feature him to be able to highlight the fact that his condition didn’t prevent him from pursuing his creative interests. I believe that the article will correct the misconception of some people that physically challenged individuals like Kyle have

boring and useless lives. I hope also to inspire other physically challenged persons to pursue their hobbies, use their talents, and maximize their remaining abilities. As an artistic person myself and with a degree in Nursing (with Psychiatric Nursing being my favorite area) and a certificate in Social Psychology, and currently working at a health care center dealing with people with physical disabilities, behavioral challenges, and medical problems, I can easily see through people and work around their idiosyncrasies. These are also reasons I am able to tap the talents and interests of people like Kyle. In view of that, I always encourage residents of the place I work to pursue their creative talents and other interests like writing, drawing, singing, or even just listening to their favorite music—activities that are therapeutic for their condition and that can uplift their spirits and boost their self-esteem and self-worth. And most of all, worthwhile activities like those ease them of their boredom and burden especially that they are living more routinely and challenging lives than ordinary people like me. Music and art are said to be food for the spirits; they help people forget their disabilities and difficulties, enabling them to live every day as normally as possible despite the world’s abnormalities. Sa Madaling Salita Sa susunod na makakita ka ng taong may kapansanan, wag mong isiping sila ay walang saysay sa mundo at ituring na walang kulay ang kanilang mga buhay.

This includes English language and settlement services for thousands of newcomers to our province every year.

April 20 - May 5, 2011 Or, in Simple Words The next time you see a physically challenged person, look at them in a very positive light. Recognize their individuality and realize that despite their limited physical abilities, they have also talents and interests that they want to pursue, especially if only given the chance and the appropriate tools and assistance. Despite his inability to use his hands to write with a pen, Kyle has turned to the computer to pursue his poetry. He still writes poems once in a while using the computer. Thank You, Mom by Kyle Peters From the heart of a son Thank you for all you have done When I fell apart You would heal my heart When I gave up You kept my chin up When I was distraught You always fought All of your might Made me keep up the fight From the heart of your son I love you, Mom (Ableism is a form of discrimination or social prejudice against people with disabilities. UFC 129 - St. Pierre vs Shields – Who is the true welterweight king?

S

aturday, April 30th, UFC 129 is a history making MMA event. UFC officials worked very hard to get Mixed Martial Arts sanctioned in Ontario. Now that it is, they’re holding their very first event in Toronto. The Rogers Centre opened up 55,000 seats which sold out in minutes. The event features a stacked card with two championship matches and a UFC fan expo leading up to the fights. Needless to say, the Toronto economy will be booming the weekend of April 30th. The main event features Canada’s crown jewel of MMA, Georges “Rush” St. Pierre, who’ll be putting up the UFC Welterweight Championship against former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion, Jake Shields. GSP is the prototype of what a fighter should be: great at all aspects, boxing, kick boxing, wrestling, jiu jitsu. No one in the game today can mix and transition from all those fighting styles as effortlessly as he can. His opponent, Jake Shields has not lost since December 14th, 2004, winning his last 15 fights. He is a Cesar Gracie trained fighter and the most dangerous jiu jitsu black belt GSP has ever face. This will be GSP’s last fight as welterweight champion. Not because Jake Shields will beat him. GSP’s game planning and skills will be too much for the former Strikeforce champion. Shields will lose, and GSP will move up to the middleweight division to face champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva in a super fight. The Co-Main Event is the other championship fight. Jose Aldo is

the first ever UFC Featherweight Champion. He buzz-sawed through all 145 lbs fighters in the WEC before the merger with the UFC. Aldo finds his name right up there with GSP when people talk about the best pound-for-pound fighters in MMA. The challenger is Canadian Mark Hominick. A dangerous and accurate striker, who’s found success now that he’s mastered his submission game too. I think this fight will be the most

Main Card: St. Pierre over Shields via TKO in Round 4; Aldo over Hominick via TKO in Round 3; Brilz over Matyushenko via Unanimous Decision; Machida over Couture via TKO Round 3; Henderson over Bocek via Unanimous Decision. Preliminary Card (Airing on Spike TV): MacDonald over Diaz via Unanimous Decision; Ellenberger over Pierson via Unanimous Decision. Preliminary Card: Patrick over Roberts via Split Decision; Valencia over Menjivar via TKO Round 1; MacDonald over Jensen via submission Round 2; Garza over Jabouin via TKO Round 1. I’ll be tweeting throughout the event. Follow me at www.twitter. com/BigMarvShow
