Reference Letters and Immigration Applications

n most immigration programs, applicants are asked for reference letters from current and previous employers.

Often these letters require employers to list an employee’s duties.

Many times, applicants find that their current and previous employers will only provide them with letters that indicate the time that they worked at the company, their job title, and salary. One court case, decided in the spring, outlines the importance of reference letters which contain a list of duties.

In the decision, the judge pointed out that the application instructions specifically requested Ms. Luongo to provide a reference letter with her job duties. The judge also said that an immigration officer can determine that a resume is not satisfactory proof of a person’s job duties. As Ms. Luongo was expressly warned that she was not going to get another chance, the judge found that it was her responsibility to provide all of the relevant reference letters.

If immigration clearly states the documents required for an application, an immigration officer does not have to remind applicants of this. The judge, in this case, said that

In the case of Luongo v. Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Ms. Luongo submitted reference letters that did not include her job duties.

Instead, she included a resume that listed her job duties. Ms. Luongo’s application was refused.

if it was impossible for Ms. Luongo to get the information requested of her, she should have given an explanation as to why. As well, she should have provided other objective evidence of her job duties.

It is important in any immigration application to provide all of the information required at the start of the process. For reference letters, this can be difficult for many reasons. In cases where full reference letters cannot be provided, it is important to get as much independent documentation to prove, as much as possible, why complete letters cannot be provided.

Bahrain, the “Kingdom of the Two Seas”

I

nternational attention was focused on BAHRAIN on the 17th of February 2011 due to political uprising for freedom and equality that led to the arrest of 800 people with at least 4 dead and then followed by a declaration of martial law and a 3-month state of emergency in March 2011.

A national dialogue on reforms as previously announced by the King

has been in progress since then.

In February of 2009 we spent a whole day of limitless sightseeing tour of the Island Kingdom of Bahrain, a modern gulf state that was once the capital of one of antiquity’s great trading empires. A flat and arid archipelago of 36 islands with 92% desert, located off the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain has a population of 1,234,596 occupying

an area of 720 sq. kms. Arabic is the official language and Islam the state religion. Currency is the Bahrain dinar.

A British protectorate until 1971, Bahrain is an absolute monarchy headed by a King with the prime minister as the real head of the government. Manama is the capital and largest city with an approximate population of 155,000. Because Manama is a small city on a small island (you won’t get lost very long), it’s easy to get around. All roads in Bahrain lead to Manama either by taxi or a rental car.

Petroleum production and processing account for 60% of government revenues. With its rich history, fascinating museums, natural attractions, souks (markets), and mosques, Bahrain has become a tourist destination of over 8 million tourists a year.

Our first stop is at the Ahmed Al Fateh Grand Mosque, the largest in the island. Officially opened in 1986, the mosque is one of the largest in the world with the capacity to accommodate over 7000 worshippers at a time. The huge dome built on top of the mosque is made of pure

fibreglass. The mosque is closed to visitors and tourists on all Fridays and other holidays.

The tour continued to the Bahrain National Museum, the largest and one of the oldest in Bahrain.

Just Because They’re WheelchairBound? (part 2) (On the Creative Streak of Many Physically Challenged Individuals) Wala na bang silbi at maipagmamalaking talino at talento ang mga taong may kapansanan? Sa tingin mo ba, porke kulang ang kanilang pisikál na kakayanan, hindi na nila maaaring maisagawa ang mga bagay na karaniwang nagagawa ng mga normal na tao?

Magdalawang-isip ka! Baka nga mas magaling pa at mas marami pang kayang gawin kaysa sa ’yo ang isang taong may kapansanan.

I

n a previous issue, I featured a resident at the health care center where I work who, despite his condition that rendered him wheelchair-bound and his arms and legs practically immovable, is still able to pursue his talent in drawing and writing poetry with the use of a computer with specialized controllers.

Now, I’m featuring yet another talented individual from the center.

Her name is Sarah Fehr, who

achieved something extraordinary, something even many physically normal individuals could not accomplish—write a book.

Despite her being wheelchairbound and physically challenged since she was eight, Sarah was able to finish the autobiography she started making years ago.

Fortunately Sarah can still use her hands in writing with pen and paper.

“I got polio when I was almost 8 years old, in June 1952. I had it severely. I was paralyzed more or less completely from my neck down…. It left me in a wheelchair and always having to wear a body brace to support my weak scoliotic back in the daytime….

In the hospital I was fortunate to have been able to continue my education. A teacher came to tutor me every day.”

The book, entitled A Fehr through All Seasons, began as a tape-recorded dictation of her recollection of many

The natural history hall focuses on the natural environment of Bahrain and also features its flora and fauna.

The ancient history section exhibits an actual burial mound which was transported from its site in the desert and reassembled in the museum.

We’re off to the Camel farm situated in Janabiya, home to a herd of 500 camels including the Arabian racing camels. The camels are regular sight being herded during the day to various grazing spots.

We drove through the remarkable 25-km. causeway, called King Fahd Causeway, that links the islands of Bahrain to mainland Saudi Arabia.

At the end of the causeway are the tower-shaped restaurants designed so visitors can enjoy the beautiful view of the two countries.

Sarah painstakingly transcribed the contents of the tapes with the help of her younger sister Verna, who did the computer encoding of the transcripts. A copy of the manuscript was finally sent to the printing press in late 2010, and Sarah gave away copies of the book to family members, close friends, and some staff members of Riverview including me. (I took part in this literary project of Sarah by editing portions of the manuscript.)

Sarah graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Arts, Major in Psychology at University of Saskatchewan and pursued Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology at South Illinois University in the United States.

She worked as a speech language pathologist for 32 years.

“I started a degree in Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Psychology at University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. I lived in a campus residence with a roommate the three years I was there. I enjoyed this very much; we had lots of fun especially on weekends when we didn’t have to study. However, my winters were very cold, long, and always plenty of snow. I always had to wait in the residence in the morning for someone who was willing to push my wheelchair to the building where classes were held. I was never sure if anyone would come along to help me. This was a daily worry for me.

“In my last year at U of S my social worker decided that I had been successful in getting my B.A. degree that pursuing higher education was warranted….After more discussion I agreed to pursue a Master’s program in Speech Language Pathology. Because few universities in Canada taught SLP, and none were accessible for wheelchair-bound individuals,

my social worker considered universities in the USA. We applied to three universities, and the first one to accept me was Southern Illinois University in the small town of Carbondale, Illinois….

I had to study well because I felt obligated to Saskatchewan Government Rehabilitation Program, which footed all my bills and expenses…. I was at SIU for two years including three summers. These were some of the best years of my life.

“I retired from work in June 2002, and in March 2003 I developed severe breathing problems. I was hospitalized…. a tracheal tube was put into my lungs; I was hooked up to a ventilator…. From Grace Hospital to Health Sciences Centre, I was then transferred to Riverview Health Centre in 2004.”

Sarah’s passion for writing began in her teenage years, when she regularly wrote entries in her journal. This carried on through her highschool and university years, citing Creative Writing as her favorite class.

“I pray that my life story will be an inspiration to all my family members. May my physical

challenges that I overcame with perseverance, support from family and friends, and prayers inspire and motivate you to persevere in whatever worthy life goals you set and challenging circumstances you might face.”

Or, in Simple Words A person’s being wheelchairbound should not deter her from pursuing many of her plans and goals. All she need is the willingness and determination to educate herself and hone her skills, strengths, and capabilities, maximizing all the resources available to her.

2011 Ford F-150 4x4 V6 EcoBoost Platinum

he Ford F-150 is sharp and tough! I wasn’t much of a truck guy and the Ford F150 Lariat 4x4 Platinum made me a convert. The red candy metallic finish also helped or as I referred to it during the week I drove it, “Filipino Journal metallic red.” The only thing missing to make owning this beast of a vehicle at all practical was a 35’ RV trailer, a motor boat and a yard of topsoil. If you have anything to haul, tow or move, I was told that this vehicle can do it easily.

Built with Ford’s new EcoBoost V6 engine, this truck can haul just about anything you hook it up to. In this model, it’s rated for towing up to 11,300 pounds and comparable to the 6.2L V8 model.

It was fun to drive. This truck looks great off road and even sharper driving it downtown and through the streets of Winnipeg! The Ford F-150 can do just about everything – tow, go off-roading, climb rocks or speed through back country roads at Whiteshell Provincial Park. It’s a monster of a truck both inside and outside.

The ride quality on the F150 was superb both in the city and on the highway. Good acceleration, lots of power as the engine hummed along.

The engine wheezed effortlessly when overtaking and accelerating on the open highway. A short offroad excursion didn’t fairly test the F150’s full range of its 4x4 features.

I’m sure it’s well equipped to handle any amount of mud, sand and snow thrown in it’s path.

Let’s talk about some of my favourite features. First is the SuperCrew Cab. The cab on the F150 is huge! The legroom alone is crazy.

I could of easily camped in the back

row and still be comfortable. Flipping the 2nd row of seats gives way to additional cargo space and easily accessible as the doors swing wide open.

Using the short bed while delivering the Filipino Journal, I also found the use of the built-in tailgate step quite handy, easy to use and even came with its own flip-up handhold bar. There was no need to bring a plastic milk crate with you. The tailgate was also equipped with a pickup box extender.

The interior of the 2011 Ford F150 is both functional and attractive.

Pavilion Hopping with Myra Ibabao-Valmonte

A

nother year reviewing pavilions meant another year full of great experiences. This Folklorama I was more focused on visiting pavilions I didn’t have a chance to see last year. I was glad I went to see and learn about new pavilions as I find each culture has something special to offer and share with the community. As for rating the Filipino pavilions, I thought both did a fantastic job in celebrating our culture. I’ll always think Filipino food, dance, and culture

are tops in ratings. Therefore, I decided to rate the other pavilions based on the ones I saw this year.

My top three pavilions for food are the Croatia “Zagreb” pavilion , both Ukrainian pavilions were tied, and the Pavilion CanadienFrancais. My top three pavilions for entertainment are the Brazilian, Indochina Chinese, and Punjab pavilions. My top three pavilions overall are the DOTC First Nations, Punjab, and Croatia “Zagreb” pavilions.

hese past couple of weeks have been exhausting, exciting, frustrating, and wonderful. It was exhausting hopping from one pavilion to the next (up to 5 per night), but exciting to see the

different costumes and beautifully decorated venues. Frustration kicked in when I couldn’t have access to a vehicle or companion, also when I got lost driving. I’ve explored parts of Winnipeg that I’ve never been to,

despite the fact that I’ve been living here for 19 years. I also learned that Winnipeg needs more visible street signs! Tthe food was wonderful and the people were so kind to us. It was like everyone was letting me into their home. Although some pavilions were more exciting, you have to understand that each culture has their own sort of, “style”; whether it is upbeat and loud or simple and less dynamic. What I loved most was seeing traditional meets contemporary/modern.

I looked for variety, and I favoured pavilions that really showcased the talents of their performers and of their

culture. I’ve learned so much through Folklorama; from geographical points, to landmarks, to etiquette, to fashion and even to sports.

What never ceased to amaze me was how much energy and effort the coordinators, volunteers, ambassadors, and performers put into each and every show. They made me so proud to be a part of this, to be from Winnipeg -- a place where diversity is embraced. I was able to meet many different people, from all over the world. Folklorama brings together all cultures and it truly

is a celebration of traditions (old and new). And although this year’s Folklorama has come to an end, I won’t ever forget the feeling of being a part of a community that not only embraces but celebrates the cultural mosaic that makes up Canada.

Stepping back in time at Lower Fort Garry

What life was like back in early Manitoba history in the 1850’s

O

ne of my first visits to Lower Fort Garry was during an elementary school field trip. I remember walking into the blacksmith’s shop and saw the blacksmith pounding his hammer on red hot metal against an anvil. It was a real fire, real coals and real iron. After the blacksmith finished pounding the iron, he dipped the red hot iron piece in water. The blacksmith asked, “Who wants to touch it?”

Many of my classmates were afraid to touch it believing it was still hot.

I was reluctant to put my hand up but somehow, my curiosity got the best of me. “Me, me, me,” I said. I slowly put my hand out to reach for the piece of iron and much to my surprise, it wasn’t hot at all. That how I remember Lower Fort Garry.

Fast forward to 2011 and over two decades later, the same blacksmith (different student) is doing the same thing to a small family with two young girls. Not only was my visit to Lower Fort Garry a vivid reminder of my childhood but even after 20 years, the costumed animators, mostly university students, are helping visitors understand, appreciate and reenact how life was like back in the 19th century. The interpreters as I found out, are part actors, part teachers

and part historians. While playing the roles of labourers, housemaids, blacksmiths and aboriginal women, including Governor George Simpson and his wife, costumed interpreters are continuously learning and researching their characters so they can be as authentic as possible.

Located against the south wall of Lower Fort Garry is the Furloft/ Saleshop and was the main centre of commerce. Most of the business transactions such as shopping and trading took place here. Going through the wide selection of artifacts, you can certainly begin to appreciate how life was like back in the 1850’s.

Situated in the centre of the walled fort was the Big House and home to the executives and officers of the Hudson’s Bay Trading Company. As I was on the “Behind the Scenes” tour, I was able to learn about some fun stuff that goes on in the Big House.

You’ll just have to visit Lower Fort Garry to find out.

In 1951, Lower Fort Garry became a Parks Canada National Historic site. Lower Fort Garry has over 45,000 artifacts on record and is one of the top 10 National Historic Sites in Canada. It displays the finest collections of stone buildings in Western Canada. It is where Treaty

No. 1 was signed by the federal government and the Ojibway and Cree nations. It was the site of the first training base of the Northwest Mounted Police in Western Canada.

Until the end of August, Lower Fort Garry offers special theme days: Sunday: Family Day; Monday: A Taste of History; Tuesday: Crafts & Trades Day; Wednesday: Children’s Day; Thursday: Rumours & Scandals Day; Friday: Behind the Scenes Day and Saturday: Drama Day. I highly recommend the Friday theme tour, where you get to see what is behind the closed doors, secret basements and behind the velvet ropes.

Lea Salonga gets honored as Disney Legend

I

nternational singer Lea Salonga joins the prestigious circle of Disney Legends who will be honored on Aug. 19 at the Anaheim Convention Center in California.

Disney President and CEO Bob Iger says The Disney Legends Award is the highest and most coveted honor given to individuals who gave voice to some of the most iconic and beloved Disney princesses. The award also recognizes the talents and outstanding contributions of the honorees to the Disney legacy.

The Filipino international singer was cited for providing the singing voice for two Disney characters: Jasmine in “Aladdin” (1992), and Fa Mulan in “Mulan” (1998) and “Mulan II” (2004). She was also

cited for garnering numerous awards for her impressive performance in Broadway, especially as Kim in Miss Saigon.

The 12 Disney Legends will each receive a two-foot-tall bronze Disney Legends sculpture. Their bronzed handprints will also be displayed in the Disney Legends Plaza at Disney’s Burbank headquarters.

Aside from Salonga, the other recipients this year are Muppets creator Jim Henson, TV host Regis Philbin; and actresses who lent their voices for Disney Princesses, including Jodi Benson (Ariel from The Little Mermaid), Paige O’Hara (Belle from Beauty and the Beast), Linda Larkin (speaking voice of Jasmine from Aladdin), and Anika

Noni Rose (Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog).

Since its inception in 1987, more than 200 Disney Legends have already been honored that include Hollywood celebrities Tim Allen, Robin Williams, Julie Andrews and Barbara Walters.

Nicholas Sparks announces Manila visit

I

nternationally acclaimed American novelist and screenwriter Nicholas Sparks is set to visit the Philippines.

This was announced by the famous author himself on his official Twitter account where he posted that he will be in Manila on October 27 to 28th.

Sparks has published 16 bestselling novels with themes that include Christian faith, love, tragedy and fate.

He is familiar to Filipino readers and moviegoers as six of his novels have been adapted to film including Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, The Notebook, Nights in Rodanthe, Dear John, and The Last Song.

Although the novelist admitted that his skill with Asian languages is virtually non-existent, his Filipino fans would be amused to know that he is trying his best to learn Tagalog.

Paris Hilton enjoying her stay in the Philippines

ocialite and hotel chain heiress Paris Hilton is apparently enjoying her Philippine visit.

In her official Twitter account, the American media personality who arrived in the country Sunday night, narrated that she enjoyed the dinner party hosted by boxing champ Manny Pacquiao and wife Jinkee Pacquiao, where she got introduced to the couple’s friends.

The Pacquiao couple got acquainted with Paris after she watched the boxing champ’s fight against Shane Mosley in the US last May. The couple also intimated in previous interviews about their plan to go on a business venture with Paris, whose various product lines have been successful in several countries.

Hilton also took notice of the warm reception she got upon her

arrival by saying that Filipinos are warm, welcoming, genuine and sweet people.

She also posted a photo of herself with Manny and Jinkee Pacquiao which made it to the 10th spot on Twitter’s list of top trending topics

for the Philippines on Wednesday morning.

Hilton is set to open her fourth boutique in the country. She will also help design a real estate property in Parañaque.

She will stay in the Philippines until Thursday.

rjohn Gilbert, the young Aeta boy whose recent videos showcasing his professional singing voice went viral over YouTube, has been invited to perform by no less than two of the most popular Filipino world-class singers.

Filipino-American Black Eyed Peas member Apl.de.ap said he’s glad that Arjohn is gaining recognition for his innate singing talent. He also said he’ll be happy to perform with Arjohn and to help him in his singing career.

uying a home is an exciting experience that can be both rewarding and challenging – and potentially even more challenging for someone who is new to Canada. If you are a newcomer to Canada, and you are thinking about becoming a homeowner, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) offers useful tips to help you find the right home.

Since most newcomers to Canada use the internet to find information on housing, CMHC developed the Housing for Newcomers site at www.cmhc.ca/ newcomers with information in eight languages: English, French, Mandarin/Simplified Chinese, Punjabi, Tagalog, Urdu, Arabic, and Spanish. You’ll find advice in these eight languages about buying a home as well as renting an apartment and maintaining a home.

The site offers tips to help newcomers through the entire homebuying process from making the decision to buy to moving day and beyond. You’ll find lots of information including how to determine what type of home you

want and where you want to live, as well as how to find and finance a home.

For example, the home you buy and where you end up buying it will depend on how much you can afford, where you work, whether you want to commute and your family’s lifestyle.

You’ll need to consider not only what you want now, but what you might want in the future. Do you need several bedrooms, more than one bathroom, or a garage?

Do you plan to have children or do you have teenagers who will be moving away soon? Think about where your children will go to school and how they will get there. Also, how important is it to live close to your family and friends, a place of worship or cultural community centres?

Once you’ve decided on where you want to live and the type of home you would like, it’s a good idea to tell friends, family and work colleagues that you’re looking for a house. They might know about homes that are on the market. Check the homes section in the newspaper as well as real estate websites, such as www.mls.

Ask for their references and call the people who have done business with them before. Also ask how they can help you with your special needs as a new Canadian. FCTPAM Annual Family Picnic and Fishing Derby

T

he Filipino Technical Professionals Association of Manitoba (FCTPAM) officers, members and guests gathered together at Selkirk Park in Selkirk, Manitoba for their Annual Family Picnic and Fishing Derby on August 13, 2011. Registration for the fishing derby participants started at 10:00 am.

The event featured a pot luck lunch, parlour games for kids and adults, and the fishing derby. The scheduled fun activities started following the sumptuous lunch enjoyed by everyone. The prizes were awarded to the winners of the different contest by president Norman Padilla, treasurer Melissa Manarin and assistant secretary Manette Amparo. Also, each fishing derby participants received a consolation prize from the association for their participation.The FCTPAM president

Celebrating Swaggerville during Filipino Night with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers

ver 100 Winnipeg Blue Bomber fans from the Filipino Journal celebrated Swaggerville with a pre-game fiesta during the Bombers-Eskimo game at Canad Inns Stadium earlier this month.

UFC Rio: Silva vs Okami Preview

S

aturday, August 27th, UFC makes their way to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for UFC 134. It’s the first time UFC has been to Brazil since October of 1998. Brazil is widely known as the birth place for Mixed Martial Arts as they’ve held their no holds barred Vale Tudo events years before UFC was created. In the 13 years since Ultimate Brazil,

the sport of MMA has changed immensely. There are rules and weight classes. Athletes are no longer pure to one form of martial art and the sport itself is more popular than ever.

UFC 134 is headlined by two rematches. The main event features the best pound-for-pound fighter in MMA, Anderson “The

Spider” Silva defending the Middleweight Championship against Yushin Okami. Okami holds a win over the champion back in January of 2006, however that win came as Silva was disqualified for an illegal up kick.

If Okami can utilize his strong wrestling skills he can grind out a decision win, but Silva is very good with submissions off his back. Also, anytime the fight is on the feet, the Champion is virtually unstoppable.

In the co-main event, two former Light Heavyweight Champions meet once again as Forrest Griffin takes on Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. In Shogun’s first fight inside the octagon back in September of 2007, he was outworked by Griffin and tapped out via rear naked choke in the closing seconds of the fight.

Shogun has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, but is a dangerous competitor when healthy. Griffin has also had a career with ups and downs, but I see him once again out working Shogun and getting another win.
