Folklorama Kick-off Enjoyed by Thousands
T
he Forks came alive with the multicultural entertainment of Folklorama Kick-off. Over the six-hour celebration, approximately 20,000 people got a taste of to expect over the 14-day festival. “What a great night with a record number of people,” says Mohamed Ismath, Folklorama President. “We are very excited for Folklorama to start and are confident this will be an absolutely fabulous festival.” A yoga class presented by lululemon started things off at 4pm, along with an ethnic market presented, sponsor tents and food vendors. Marco Castillo & The Brazilian Beats and Wushu Manitoba got the crowd warmed up from 5-6pm. The mainstage show, hosted by CTV’s Jordan Witzel and HOT 103’s Ace Burpee, began at 6pm with a colourful Folklorama ambassador parade. The Honourable Stephen Fletcher, Member of Parliament for
Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia and Headlingly; The Honourable Flor Marcelino, Minister of Culture, Heritage and Tourism; Acting Deputy Mayor Paula Havixbeck; Tracy Graham, Executive Vice President of Finance and CFO for Manitoba Lotteries; and Mohamed Ismath, Folklorama President, all addressed the crowd. The mainstage entertainment showcased cultures from around the world with lively performances by the McConnell School of Dance, Theatre Flamenco, Indo Caribbean Performing Arts, Portuguese Folk Dancers of Manitoba, Zoloto Ukrainian Dance Company, Folklore De Mi Tierra, Ballet Folklorico Magia Chilena, Kayumanggi Philippines Performing Arts and Yoslai de la Rosa. Ballet Folklorico Magia Chilena made the trip from Chile to perform at Folklorama.

in touch with the researcher and learner in me. Like one day at work, two nurses were discussing about injection routes. They were asking what type of injection route was that which involved jabbing the needle just beneath the dermis of the skin at an angle of about 10-15 degrees. I said, “What is intradermal!”; as if I was a contestant on Jeopardy.

President Aquino greets Filipino Muslims on Ramadan
I
n a message posted at the Official Gazette, President Aquino expressed solidarity with Filipino Muslims as they begin their observance of Ramadan. The President also said the devotion of Filipino Muslims to Islamic practices is inspiring and an opportunity for enlightenment. He added that Muslim holiday serves as a representation of peace and also wished the MuslimFilipino community a renewal that transcends the holy month. During Ramadan, Muslims worldwide observe sacrifice and purification through fasting, prayer, and acts of kindness towards the less fortunate. In observance of the holiday, Aquino earlier said that the
military would have to balance its operations against the Abu Sayyaf Group, which killed seven Marines in Sulu, beheading four of them. On Sunday, Aquino awarded the Gold Cross Medal for Gallantry in Action, the second highest honor, next to the Medal of Valor, to the seven slain Marines in recognition of their sacrifice to uphold the law. The seven Marines were also posthumously promoted to the next higher rank. Aside from the Gold Cross Medal, their families will receive P250,000 each in assistance, scholarships for their children, as well as housing privileges. He also visited the wake of the seven Marines at the Philippine

eavy monsoon rains battered Metro Manila and nearby provinces on Tuesday August 2 prompting education authorities to suspend classes in elementary and high school levels even though there was no storm signal hoisted in any part of the country. Malaca単ang through Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr also issued Memorandum Circular No. 17 based on the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). Classes in the tertiary level as well as government work in the National Capital Region (NCR) were suspended effective 1 pm Tuesday afternoon. Exempted from the suspension work are those agencies and government offices engaged in the delivery of basic and health services as well as preparedness/response to disasters and calamities.
Secretary Ramon Carandang of the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office assured that concerned government agencies have been alerted to help people affected by the heavy rains.

Carandang also explained that the government can no longer rely on storm signals on whether classes or work should be halted. He added that they must evaluate the situation on a case by case basis.

I Love You Because 4.5 Stars
It’s Who You Know Productions Venue 17 - PTE - Colin Jackson Studio I Love You Because is a delightful take on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. You follow a group of friends as they discover true love amongst themselves. Two explore the world of being “Friends with Benefits” while the others help each other get over their past relationships but end up falling for each other. This is a solid production but the venue is quite small and does hinder the full experience. Set changes are a little awkward and there are times when the four-piece band is… well, a four-piece band. I do wonder if the show would have benefited from a scaled down band. The cast is stellar. The musical numbers are pleasing to the ear especially when Alicia Dash takes the lead. Dash’s voice is incredible and has you in the palm of her hand as soon as she hits her first note. Colin Peterson and Aaron Pridham both have incredible comedic timing; you’ll find your sides hurting after laughing incredibly hard. I Love you Because… you’re all just so cute and charming. - Bernie Pastorin
Zanna, Don’t! 4.5 Stars
Stage16 Venue 9 - Shaw Performing Arts Centre Welcome to Heartsville, U.S.A, the setting of Zanna Don’t! Imagine a world where homosexuality is the norm and being straight means you’re the odd one out. Sound bizarre? Yes, it could be… but you’ll have to admit that the world would be very colourful and seem like a happier place, or so you would think. The cast is brilliant and deserves the standing ovations they’ve been getting. At times, the band does drown out the actors but you’ll just smile as you watch every action the actors make.
The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987
While everyone has his or her own shining moments on stage it is Paige Pooley who steals the show with her “mechanical bull”. Shaun Castor also delivers a heart melting number that is sure to jerk a few tears. Everyone should see this show if they haven’t. Lining up 2 hours prior just to get your tickets is well worth it. Zanna, Don’t? More like Zanna, please do! … Sorry, I had to. - Bernie Pastorin
Cannibal! The Musical 4 Stars
A
hhhh, musicals. You can’t have a Fringe Festival without musical theatre. Now what separates Cannibal! The Musical from most others is that it centers around something that you wouldn’t think to sing about...eating people. Now I don’t know from experience but I never thought eating people was all that entertaining to write a musical score to but Trey Parker, co-creator of South Park, made it happen and I am ecstatic that M.P.M.M Productions made this musical come to fruition this year. Cannibal! The Musical is the story about convicted cannibal Alferd Packer (played by Dan DeJaeger) recalling his trip with five other men on their journey from Utah to Breckenridge, Colorado in hopes of hitting the jackpot with a gold mining expedition. Although their adventure takes a turn for the worse when they finally figure out they are lost within the Rocky Mountains and the gold miners begin their journey to insanity from starvation and begin to...well, you can guess. This was an amusing musical to watch simply for the fact that it’s so untraditional from the popular musicals which deal with happiness and love and not about eating human flesh. Don’t worry, there is love in this play; the love between Packer and Leanne...his horse. Hey, it’s Trey Parker. What do you expect? So even the relationships that are showcased in the play are just as untraditional. The uniqueness of the premise, songs and even the
characters is something to take note of and something that I enjoyed. What I thoroughly enjoyed though that had me giggling in the audience by myself was the amount of Filipino actors posing as Indians in this version of Cannibal! The Musical. The chief (played by Donnell Dacillo) is the leader of the Tagalog tribe, a tribe that Packer and his gold mining crew run into while on their adventure. I was glad that these little Filipino subtleties made it into the play just for the fact that a little bit of the Tagalog language makes it into the play. And I’ll just say (without giving too much away), misinterpretation is always hilarious. I like to think that musicals make situations much more enjoyable and make light of situations because of the melodic tunes and dance steps (dancing wasn’t quite these gentlemen’s thing but they did make up for it in their singing). And to make light of things so farfetched and serious as eating another human being, hanging people or a man/horse relationship that you pray doesn’t end in bestiality just screams hilarity! Probably one of the funniest musicals I’ve seen live before like The Adventures of Robin Hood meets the movie Alive. Definitely worth the watch if you aren’t easily squirmish. - Tyler Magnaye
Illuminati II: The Second One 3.5 Stars
H
ave you ever wondered what it would be like to have a dolphin as the focal point of our universe? No, not Flipper. I mean somehow a dolphin as the key to stopping world domination? Me neither. But after watching Illuminati II: The Second One, it has now made me wonder a little bit. Not a lot, but the thought of having a dolphin as some sort of messiah has not only confused me but also scares me a little. As for the play itself, the same feelings occur. Confusion and a little bit of fear. The latter only coming from the fact that an actress was creeping up into the audience and I thought she going to pull me on stage and make me do something. But the confusion was my main concern about this play. Illuminati II involves a dolphin-turned-human, a
female robot, Bill Gates, a nazi, the lost city of Atlantis and of course, the secret organization Illuminati; all of which fight for/against world domination when the United States plans to bomb Greece (out of all places). Don’t forget all these things are singing and dancing along for an hour and a half. Yes, doesn’t get more weirder than that. I use the word “weird” but I don’t mean much negative to it. While the plot makes no sense whatsoever, this seems like the type of play that doesn’t need a straight plot for it to be enjoyable. But me being me, I was thoroughly entertained in all my confusion saying to myself “I have no idea what is happening or why but I don’t really care.” And if that was the point for this play then mission accomplished Kiss The Giraffe Productions, mission accomplished. But to be reasonable, that doesn’t give them an excuse to randomly pick and choose the first thing that pops in to your head, put it on paper and tie it all together to make a play. Not everyone is going to like it which is why this play could be iffy for some people. Audience members aren’t going to like being confused with all this randomness that Illuminati II: The Second One offers. And alas, I will never know if watching the first one would have helped me to understand what I had watched. But the weirdness in this play had a “cuteness” to it as if it was okay to not know why you’re watching a dolphin basically save the world. But with that being said was it too much weirdness? Are we ready for a play about a dolphin messiah? They might have pushed it a little far with the craziness but this certainly takes the cake in the most “out there” play I’ve seen during this year’s Fringe. - Tyler Magnaye
Rogue Cop 2.5 Stars
F
August 5 - 20, 2011
Rogue Cop follows the story of detective Skylar Murphy (played by Adam Hurtig), a dimwitted loose cannon who likes to play by his own rules. Detective Murphy is following the mystery of fellow officer Detective Shaw, who was killed in a drug trafficking bust. But Murphy, being the self-proclaimed rogue cop that he is gets pulled from the case due to his recklessness. But like you would assume that’s not going to stop him from taking matters into his own hands and finishing what he started. While Rogue Cop was an entertaining watch, there wasn’t anything that really stood out to make it a memorable show or a stand out in this year’s Fringe. It mostly follows the antics that the character Skylar Murphy comes up with during his time on the case. Hurtig plays up what we all think a rogue cop would be like complete with the Magnum P.I mustache and Miami Vice aviators, taking those certain elements here and there from different 80‘s cop shows and making it a decent comedic parody or I guess...a parody of a parody. Think of Rogue Cop as the old TV series Police Squad! except younger, more facial hair and less funny. But all in all, the Skylar Murphy character is nothing but a shtick. From the bad sound effects (or should I say lack thereof) to the occasional breaking of the fourth wall. Surround this Murphy character with drugs, sex and violence and mix it with profanity and late 80‘s/early 90‘s hip-hop and you’ve got your basic unlikely superhero/cop comedy with all the jokes that have already been told in previous versions of this genre. The reason being is that the story seemed unoriginal. I was hoping for something more surprising to the murder case or maybe a different case altogether and because of that it may have been funny but I know it could have been funnier. The play is a worthy watch if you want some good chuckles but don’t expect any side splitting humor in it. It’s one gag after another though and it’s not going to get people to come back to watch it again and again. A simple murder case with a whole bunch of complications along the way, Give this play a shot but I don’t really recommend it. Whether you liked it, hated it or you’re like me and am somewhere in between is up to Skylar Murphy, Rogue Cop.
irst stop for my first Fringe Festival adventure was at the Tom Hendry Theatre at the MTC Warehouse where production company Matching Jackets showed what they dubbed as “Winnipeg’s first -Tyler Magnaye action play” entitled Rogue Cop.

Islendingadagurinn! Discover your inner Viking in Gimli
t’s time to discover the inner Viking in you! I certainly did during my weekend trip to Gimli and the 122nd Annual Icelandic Festival of Manitoba. Islendingadagurrin offered a wide range of activities and events throughout it’s 4-day celebration of Icelandic culture and heritage. There was live music during Islendingarock on the Gimli Pier and Harbour stage. For the more active Vikings like myself, there was the Icefest Beach Volleyball tournament, sandcastle building contest, a 10-mile road race or a 1-mile family road race. We can’t forget the food especially the three-day pancake breakfast. I didn’t realize Vikings liked pancakes. One of the more popular sights featuring Icelandic culture and heritage was the MTS Viking Village. The Viking Village demonstrated how life was like back in the Viking age 793 AD to 1066 AD. The Viking encampment was home to costumed residents for the entire weekend. Yes, the villagers “lived” at the camp for the entire weekend. The villagers were a plenty and supported many families in a single encampment. Among the locals, you had a blacksmith, merchants, leather workers, wood crafters, weavers, fighters and mercenaries. The biggest draw during our visit was the Viking Warfare Tactics demonstration that happened at 3pm every day of the festival. The 30min demonstration highlighted the Art of War, Viking Style. The narrative during the demonstrations focused on the weapons used by Viking warriors in addition to various combat tactics. One of the tactics was “The Wall” where Viking warriors would line up side-by-side so that their shields overlapped. Warriors would use the wall to advance against rival clans. In addition to using a protective
shield, protective chainmail armour was used by many Viking warriors in battle. The shield during combat was capable as an offensive weapon as the edge of a shield could dismember body parts or combat equipment. What else is there to do in Gimli? There’s definitely a good selection of mom & pop family restaurants. My personal favourite is Beach Boy Restaurant and they offer
fresh Manitoba pickerel fish & chips! As heard in a recent radio commercial, summer hasn’t started until you shop at Tergesen’s. It’s your one-stop-shop for knick-knacks, gifts and summer outerwear. It’s one of the oldest buildings in Gimli and an interested fact to note, it is the only business in Gimli that has been operated by the same family since it opened over a hundred years ago in 1899. How can I not forget to mention the beach at Gimli? As the temperature hit the mid 30’s last weekend, it was no surprise to find Gimli Beach packed with sun worshippers and kids trying to stay cool in Lake Winnipeg. Offshore adventures include boating, jet ski rentals and fishing.

Paying the Rent: What’s Included – and What’s Not
I
f you rent a home or apartment in Canada, the largest expense you will have to budget for each month will likely be your rent. Rents can vary greatly in Canada, depending on where you live, how much space you need and how many features you want your home to have. It is therefore important to make sure you know what your rent will include – and what it won’t – before you sign a lease. To help you make an informed decision, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) offers the following information about rental costs and how to calculate how much you should be prepared to pay each month:
in your rent. In Ontario, the rent for most highrise apartments includes everything except the parking, telephone and cable TV.
• The best way to find out if the rent is fair is by “comparison shopping.” This means looking at several homes or apartments in the same area, to find out what the average rents are like for that neighborhood.
• Apartments in Canada must include at least a fridge and a stove. Most landlords allow you to have a microwave oven, but some may not allow you to have a dishwasher, a clothes washer and dryer, or an air conditioner. This is especially true for highrise apartment buildings, which are often already air-conditioned and which usually have separate, coin-operated laundry rooms.
• What your rent includes differs from one province or territory to another. In Nova Scotia, for example, the electricity (hydro) and heat usually aren’t included

• When you calculate how much you will be paying each month, make sure to take into account some of the additional features or services that may end up costing you a little extra. For instance, an $800-a-month apartment that includes utilities, cable and parking could end up costing you less than a $600-a-month apartment that does not include those utilities. What’s important isn’t always which apartment offers the lowest rent, but which apartment gives you the best value for your money.
• If you decide to rent a house, you will probably have to supply your own appliances. You will also be responsible for mowing the lawn, weeding the garden and shoveling snow in the winter. The landlord is generally responsible for providing you with a lawnmower, a shovel and the other tools you will need to carry out these chores.
anyone who rents a house or an apartment. It is insurance that covers your possessions. The owner of the property will have insured the building but your personal effects (for example, furniture and clothing) will not be covered by the owner’s insurance. You may want your personal effects insured in case there is a problem and therefore you will need to take out a separate renters insurance plan.

• Some landlords offer special deals such as a reduced rent for the first year or one month’s rent free. These deals are usually meant to give you extra incentive to rent their apartments. But most of these specials are offered for a reason, so make sure to check out other apartments in the area and find out why this one is offering incentives. And make sure you understand exactly what is being offered. For example, the special may only apply to your first year’s rent. After that, the landlord could raise your rent substantially. • You may also want to consider getting Home Renters Insurance. enough to autograph my vinyl copy of A Flock of Seagulls’ album Dream Come True and to have photographs of us with him taken. by aLfie vera mella elfideas102@yahoo.com
Watching The Seagulls Fly Once Again (On Our Trip to Kenora to Watch A Flock of Seagulls)
O
n July 29, 2011, Inna, I, and Evawwen went on a road trip to Kenora, Ontario—about two and a half hours away from Winnipeg, Manitoba, where we live—to watch A Flock of Seagulls at Harbourfest. Two unfortunate events occurred during our adventure—we got pulled over by a highway patrol because of overspeeding! Next, we didn’t anticipate that children were not allowed at the show because liquor was being served. Because of this, Inna and Evawwen had to stay outside the tent where the show was being held and only I got to watch A Flock of Seagulls. I was obviously the only New Wave enthusiast in the crowd—what with my waterfall hairstyle, red paisley longsleeves, skinny jeans, metallic-crimson Doc Martens boot, and my vinyl copy of A Flock of Seagulls’ album Dream Come True for autograph signing after the show. I was really dancing the day
away and singing along most of the songs which I knew by heart, such as “Rainfall,” “The More You Live, The More You Love,” “Telecommunication,” “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You),” “Space Age Love Song,” and “I Ran (So Far Away).” Despite his age—and he no longer sport that famous waterfall hairstyle—Mike Score, the remaining original member of A Flock of Seagulls still played the keyboards well and had his typical New Wave– style low voice. Complementing Score’s performance were his current bandmates—Joe Rodriguez (guitars), Pando (bass), and Michael Brahm (drums)—all of whom rendered their respective parts diligently. After the performance, one of the ushers told me that the band would meet me after a while. Learning that my wife and our son were unable to watch the show inside the venue, Score happily met us outside the tent and chatted with us. He was kind
The Seagulls’ Birth A Flock of Seagulls was formed in 1979 in Liverpool, England, by Michael Score (vocals/keyboards), Alister Score (drums), Frank Maudsley (bass), and Paul Reynolds (guitar). The band has released five full-length albums: A Flock of Seagulls (1982), Listen (1983), The Story of a Young Heart (1984), Dream Come True (1985), and The Light at the End of the World (1995). According to Score himself, he is yet to release a new album of A Flock of Seagulls, but that a solo album is slated for release in September 2011. The band performed at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippines, in April 2008, with fellow New Wave pioneers Gene Loves Jezebel and Real Life. Final Note Definitely, to a passionate music enthusiast, meeting an icon—whether famous or obscure—is in itself a big and priceless accomplishment. Besides, this mutual admiration works both ways—the fan gets to meet his icons, cementing his love for the latter’s music; the artist gets to meet his fans, inspiring him to write more music.

YouTube sensation Maria Aragon glad to be ‘home’
Y
ouTube sensation Maria Aragon finally got to see the Philippines. The 11-year-old singer arrived in the country last July 20 with her mother and three siblings for a twomonth vacation. She plans to visit the hometown of her mother in Ormoc City, Leyte and to enjoy the sands of Boracay. Maria had her first live local appearance via “M.U. (Music Uplate) Live” on July 21 where she sang her Jessie J’s “Price Tag” while playing the keyboard. The young singer has already signed up as the newest talent of ABS-CBN Kapamilya. She is also set to ink a contract with ABS-CBN’s record label, Star Records where she will sing “Born This Way” and “Kung Bubuksan Mo Lang and Puso,” among others.
Maria landed in the news when music star Lady Gaga twitted that she had viewed a YouTube video of her playing the keyboard and singing Gaga’s new song “Born This Way.” Soon after that, Maria’s video went viral, garnering more than 38 million views and roughly 400,000 Likes. Gaga said she was extremely impressed by the girl’s performance to the point that she even had a duet with “Lady Maria” during the pop singer-songwriter’s March 3 concert in Canada. The young singer has so far invaded several U.S. shows such as “Good Morning America” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” Her most recent performance was in front of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
during their visit in Canada last month. Born of Filipino parents, Maria is certainly proud of her Filipino blood and tries to keep in touch with Filipino cultures and traditions even while living in Canada.

Dance to the beat of life with GMA Pinoy TV’s “TIME OF MY LIFE”
K
nown for producing groundbreaking programs, GMA Network introduces yet another unique and innovative show on TV. On August 3, the very first Pinoy danserye titled “Time of My Life” premieres on GMA Pinoy TV, the network’s flagship international channel. “Time of My Life” features three of Starstruck’s most talented discoveries who have all matured in their craft – Kris Bernal, Rocco Nacino, and Mark Herras. Viewers should also look forward to seasoned actors Jean Garcia, Raymond Bagatsing, and Cherie Gil showing off their dancing talent. Packed with amazing dance and drama scenes, the danserye tells of Shane’s (Kris) quest to fulfill her dream of becoming a real dancer. In the process, she uncovers things of the past as she explores the field of dancing. Helping Shane achieve her dreams are two knights in shining armor: Jason (Rocco), her childhood friend, and Patrick (Mark), Jason’s friend who is also the founder of the Motion Masters dance group. Together, they compete against The Elite Crew led by Zaira (LJ Reyes) who is the protégé and stepdaughter of famous dancing queen, Lisa (Jean). Because of the competition between Shane and Zaira, a former rivalry resurfaces between Lisa and Martha (Cherie), Shane’s mother. Martha has long been angry and bitter because her dance partner and boyfriend, Fred, broke up with her to be with Lisa. Soon, the couple had a
daughter named Lisette. Unable to accept defeat, Martha schemed to dance with Fred again and set fire to the house where Lisa and Lisette were. However, Lisa followed Fred and, thus, only the child was believed to have perished in the fire. This incident caused Fred and Lisa to part ways; Fred worked abroad while Lisa went back to her family and married Gregory (Emilio Garcia), the father of Zaira. On the other hand, Martha paid for her crime but kept with her in jail a secret about Fred and Lisa’s child. Lisette did not really die in the fire but was saved by Martha’s friend, Carlotta (Tanya Gomez). She was raised as Shane and grew up with a natural talent and interest in dancing. After many years, Lisa, Fred and Martha cross paths again. To avenge herself, Martha discreetly manipulates the two to fight each other using their own daughter, Shane. Will Fred and Lisa ever discover who Shane really is? Will this truth help or prevent the young dancer from fulfilling her dream? Will their family be reunited or drawn apart by arising complications? A story about family, love and dreams, “Time of My Life” will inspire viewers to take hold of their loved ones as they work hard for their aim in life. Completing the cast of the danserye are reputable actors Ms. Caridad Sanchez as Lola Becky, Rez Cortez as Douglas, Samantha Lopez as Lucinda, Geleen Eugenio as Janet, Joshua Zamora as Mario, and Ronnie Henares as Vernon.
“Time of My Life” also showcases young talents who form the two dance troupes. The Elite Crew are Steven Silva as John, Enzo Pineda as Donnie, Diva Motelaba as Lally, Yassi Pressman as Terry, and Myra Carel (Jump In 1st runner up) as Paula. On the other hand, Motion Masters is composed of Ryza Cenon as Rochelle, Sarah Lahbati as Pia, Sef Cadayona as Harry, Mayton Eugenio as Amera, Ken Chan as Rudolph, Teejay Marquez as Chicho, and Renelee Asilum (Jump In grand winner) as Cynthia. The Kapuso Network’s danserye is based on the original concept created for GMA Television by Senedy Que with head writer Des Garbes Severino, choreographers Miggy Tanchanco (modern), and Donald Balbuena (ballroom), and directors Mark Reyes (musicals) and Andoy Ranay (drama). Kapuso viewers in Asia Pacific, Middle East, U.S., and Canada may catch “Time of My Life” on GMA Pinoy TV beginning August 3. Call your preferred pay TV operator now to subscribe. (30)

Pavilion Hopping 2011 Folklorama by: Loribelle Austria
Brasil Carnival Pavilion: A newer addition to the Folklorama Festival, hosted at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. It features a live band with amazing singers and musicians (the drum players were phenomenal)! This pavilion brings such energy to the stage which is infectious to the audience as they are big on audience participation! The dancers spend some time doing their fiery numbers weaving through the audience (they might even grab you to join in)! Their coconut butterfly shrimp with mango sauce was also a hit with me! Korean Pavilion: Make sure to bring your appetite; the aromas are sure to captivate you from the moment you enter the building! They might not have air conditioning, but they make up for it by fanning you with their traditional fans as you walk in to see the show. The Korean pavilion will continue to captivate you with their colorful costumes, young and comical hosts, traditional dances (performed by children of all-ages), and also a heart-racing martial arts exhibit! Enjoy some Kimchi and Sushi and don’t forget to visit their cute booths filled with something for everyone! Greek Pavilion: This wonderfully organized pavilion is extremely welcoming and is sure to please your appetite. I had the “Gyros in Pita”, which was absolutely delicious and highly recommended. They had a wide range of food which is sure to please everyone (vegetarian-friendly). I learned a lot about the Greek history through the young and high-spirited performers. It is beautiful to note that they were always holding hands throughout each and every dance number! This educational and highenergy pavilion is sure to leave you yelling, “Opa”, all night long.

Ethiopia: Smaller venue and no air conditioning. The heat is only turned up once the performers start tearing up the stage! Got to sample some injera (flatbread) with three different types of wat (stew) on top. I wasn’t too big on the injera and wat since it was more on the sour side. In the corner by the stage, you’ll find some young ladies practicing the traditional coffee making ritual. You’re welcome to try a cup of freshly brewed coffee. Most importantly, I learned that coffee actually originated in Ethiopia! All in all, the music and dancing is sure to have you dancing along in your seats at the very least. You will also find it hard to refrain from standing and joining in! Great traditional / cultural performances as well as displays. German: I’ve always thought that Germany was known for their beer when in fact, their wine is quite impressive! Enjoy some mashed potatoes, red cabbage, sauerkraut, and schnitzel while having a beer or wine. Great dancing from local talent and also from the dancing group who has come all the way from Germany! It was nice to see both older and younger people involved with the performances. I quite enjoyed the yodeling and I found that the host educated us while kept us entertained at the same time. Spain: I had the pleasure to sample a plate of Paella which was delicious; I finished the meal with flavorful sangria. The beauty of flamenco dancing is captured by beautiful women. Only downside is there were no male performers or ambassadors. Who knew that the Spanish had such great rhythm?! You’re sure to stomp along and rejoice with, “Ole”! Lighting was beautiful and the guitarist was fantastic. You also could experience the music through his solo performance. Costumes were colorful and gorgeous! A must-see! Best food of the night: Spain. Favorite of the night: Spain. Portuguese Pavilion: Saw the 6:45 show and was later informed that each show is different. The earlier show(s) consist of the younger children performing. Later shows will have the older ambassadors involved on stage. Enjoyed a fruit drink called “Sumol” (passion fruit) and some cod. For dessert we had something that is similar to a Filipino roll-cake. Women were wearing 7 layers of skirts; thank goodness the venue was air conditioned. We finished off the show with a female singer from Toronto and she was amazing! Great venue, good food, and an overall OK experience. Celtic Ireland Pavilion By far my favorite pavilion so far. Large and beautifully set-up venue. The sample plate included sausage (similar to breakfast sausage), mashed potatoes, sausage roll, and crispy coleslaw. Enjoy an Irish Coffee and an apple crisp for dessert. The performances ran right after one another, which made for a highly entertaining and smooth show. Beautiful smoke effects added to the grand stage and mystic feel. When you close your eyes, you literally feel like you’re in Ireland. A must-see!

Belgian Pavilion: Small and restaurant-style venue. We went to the last show which might be why the energy was low and the venue wasn’t full. The theme of the night was evidently: beer. The performances were mediocre, didn’t learn much about the culture and learned more about the different types of beer. The show consisted of one accordion player, one singer, a small group of dancers (no boys), and a host that read off of a paper. Belgian waffles, Belgian chocolate, chocolate mousse, and of course, the beer was a hit with me. Didn’t end up trying Belgian’s national dish: Fries. No joke.
India Pavilion: I cannot complain about anything in regards to this pavilion! It was educational, entertaining, traditional, and fun. I learned things that I never knew about India and their cultural display is quite impressive (and huge). I loved the performances; they were so high-energy and captivating. The India pavilion had some of the most beautiful costumes I’ve seen so far. The lighting was just as beautiful and it was like the lights were dancing along as well. Come out and see a four year old girl dance to, “I love India”, a dance group from Montreal, and enjoy some samosas or butter chicken to complete your experience. The Bollywood dances were probably the highlight of my night. The India pavilion truly showcases the beauty of their country. Caribbean Pavilion: Some of the yummiest food that I’ve had all week! I’d like to refer to this pavilion as the, “party pavilion” since the line-ups for both the food and bar were crazy. Everyone was dancing and having a good time. As far as more traditional and cultural performances, it wasn’t too impressive. The show consisted of a few steel drum performances, a limbo dance, and some dancing by girls that I wasn’t too sure about. Like I said, come to this pavilion hungry and ready to party.

UFC 133: Evans VS Ortiz Preview
S
aturday, August 6th, the UFC comes to the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Though it was not an easy road to get there. The fight card for UFC 133 has been riddled with injured fighters and card changes. Originally, this event was to feature a match up for the Light Heavyweight Championship between former training partners and friends, champion Jonny “Bones” Jones and “Sugar” Rashad Evans. However due to a hand injury to Jones, he was replaced by stand out, Phil Davis. Davis then suffered a knee injury just three weeks ago and was pulled from the main event. UFC officials tried put together a rematch between Evans and the man that beat him for the Light Heavyweight Championship, Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida, but the money wasn’t good enough for Machida. So in steps Tito Ortiz. Evans and Ortiz had also fought before. In July 2007, Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans fought to a majority draw. Now they’ll get their chance
to settle a score and see a real winner. Evans is next in line for a title shot. A win cements that. A loss would put him back down the ladder. A win for Ortiz puts him back at the top of the division and in the mix as one of the contenders. An amazing turn of events considering he was on the cusp of getting cut from the UFC had he not beaten Ryan Bader at UFC 132. Injuries also affected the co-main event and undercard of UFC 133. The co-main event was to feature Pride legend Antonio Rodgerio Nogueira taking on former UFC Middleweight Champion, Rich Franklin. Nogueira pulled out due to a shoulder injury just two weeks ago and Franklin decided to sit out instead of taking on a short notice fight. Also, Featherweight Champion, Jose Aldo was set to defend his title against Chad Mendes, but he’s out until October and Mendes is now matched up against Rani Yahya. Other replacements: Vladimir Matushenko has been replaced

by Matt Hamill, Ivan Menjivar replaces Michael McDonald and Costantinos Philippou replaces Alessio Sakara. Props go out to the UFC for salvaging this card. In fact Evans against Ortiz is more interesting than his fight against Davis. Add in there exciting match ups like Belfort vs Akiyama and MacDonald vs Pyle, this card on paper, actually looks pretty good. Here’s my predictions for UFC 133 Rashad Evans over Tito Ortiz via unanimous decision Vitor Belfort over Yoshihiro Akiyama via KO in Round 1 Dennis Hallman over Brian Ebersole via unanimous decision Jorge Rivera over Costantinos Philippou via TKO in Round 2 Rory MacDonald over Mike Pyle via unanimous decision Matt Hamill over Alexander Gustafsson via TKO in Round 2 Chad Mendes over Rani Yahya via unanimous decision Nick Pace over Ivan Menjivar via submission in Round 3 Nam Phan over Mike Brown via unanimous decision Paul Bradley over Rafael Natal via unanimous decision I’ll be tweeting throughout the show, follow me www.twitter.com/ BigMarvShow
