President's Message 2012 Year in Review

T

he year 2012 is almost coming to an end and the Manitoba Filipino Business Council Inc. (MFBC) continues to grow as an organization that has produced many quality events for our members. Events included the MFBC Networking Keynote Speaker

Series held at the Hilton Inn Airport Suite Hotel, which included Barbara Bowes of Bowes Legacy Group, Robert McIntyre of Dale Carnegie Leadership Training and others. Topics included human resource management and ways to

motivate employees. Other events included a MFBC Business Mixer at Charlee’s Restaurant & Lounge and a Health & Fitness Industry Mixer at Canadinns Garden City. November was heightened with excitement with the MFBC’s Awards Gala, which was held at the Gates on Roblin. The MFBC gave recognition to the business owners within the Filipino Community and to those who contributed to our ever-growing

community. This inaugural event was sold out was attended by all levels of government, business owners, high ranking company officials, community leaders and guests. The MFBC was proud to have donated $2000 to the Kidney Foundation of Canada from the success of the event and the business organization is already planning the 2013 MFBC Awards Gala.

MFBC Family Christmas Party

O

n December 8th, the Manitoba Filipino Business Council celebrated their first annual Christmas Party. The children – and yes also their parents - had fun playing musical chairs. The children played "Sammy Says " as Sammy Sarte of Sarte Heating and Cooling tried his best to fool the children! The MFBC children also had prepared a special dance number to present the members – wearing their "I [heart] Filipino Journal" t-shirts! The Christmas Party highlight was also the children picking from the Port a Party store - a store set up just for the children of MFBC !

And it’s not just about business within the MFBC as they ended the year with a Family fun holiday event supporting the Filipino Senior Citizens Hall and donating non-perishable items to needy families. The next MFBC event is slated for January 23, 2013 and details of the event and future events will be on the MFBC website at mfbc.ca. A ‘Christmas Truce’ for all

T

here is something extraordinary about the Christmas season this year. There is peace where there were wars not too long ago. In the Philippines, a framework agreement for the establishment of a Bangsamoro homeland was signed between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Movement (MILF) rebels who have been warring for decades in the island of Mindanao. And in the Middle East, the Israeli government and Hamas, the political entity that is in control of the Gaza strip, signed a ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States and Egypt. Today, the truce in Mindanao and Gaza – halfway the world apart -- are holding up and there are no signs that any of the parties would violate the ceasefire agreements. While this is by no means a miracle, it is a testament to man’s intrinsic desire for peace. But sometimes a conflict -- or war -- erupts and causes innumerable suffering to people. But throughout history, these conflicts often end in peaceful accord only after one party loses to the other like in most wars among nations; e.g., World War I and World War II. However, there are times when no winner emerges and the war continues until a truce is arranged. Such was the case of the Korean War (1950-1953) in which an armistice agreement was signed to end the hostilities between North Korea and South Korea. Six decades later, the two Koreas have yet to reach a peace agreement; however, they continue to

observe the ceasefire – with occasional violations -- notwithstanding the fact that they are technically still at war. Christmas truce of 1914 But there was one truce that was just for a day but it made a lasting impression to this day. In my article, “Give Truce a Chance” (December 23, 2005), I wrote: “In 1914, ninetysix years ago, during the Great War — or World War I as we call it today — the British and French armies were manning the 27-mile Western Front fiercely defending French territory from the advancing German Army. Across the British and French trenches, as near as 200 feet away, the Germans were dug in. What separated the opposing armies was a place called ‘No Man’s Land.’ “On Christmas Eve, one of the most incredible — and unusual — events in human history took place: the Germans started placing candles on trees on ‘No Man’s Land.’ Lit with candles, the ‘Christmas’ trees looked awesome. The Germans began singing Christmas songs and the British and French troops responded by singing too. Soon the entire ‘No Man’s Land’ turned into a symphonic Christmas celebration. The Germans proposed a “Christmas truce” and the French and British troops accepted. “The memorable event was detailed in a book, titled ‘Silent Night,’ written by Stanley Weintraub. He wrote: ‘Signboards arose up and down the trenches in a variety of shapes. They were usually in English, or — from the Germans — in fractured English. YOU NO FIGHT, WE NO FIGHT was the most frequently

employed German message. Some British units impoverished MERRY CHRISTMAS banners and waited for a response. More placards on both sides popped up.’ “By Christmas morning, ‘No Man’s Land’ was filled with fraternizing soldiers, sharing rations and gifts, singing and more solemnly burying their dead. Soon they were even playing soccer, mostly with impoverished balls. According to one account, ‘proper burials took place as soldiers from both sides mourned together and paid their respect.’ “When the generals heard about the ‘Christmas truce,’ they were aghast and ordered their soldiers to start shooting at each other. The soldiers resumed shooting but most of them — for several days — aimed their rifles at the sky and the stars. In some sectors, the truce continued until New Year’s Day. After all, how can ‘friends’ shoot at each other? “What was ironic was that earlier in the autumn of 1914, Pope Benedict XV called for an official truce between the warring governments. The Papal plea was ignored. After the ‘Christmas Truce,’ the embarrassed British commanders vowed that a truce should not happen again. However, in 1916, an ‘Easter Truce’ happened on the Eastern Front. “On November 21, 2005, Alfred Anderson, aged 109, the last veteran of that ‘Christmas Truce,’ died at his home in Angus, Scotland. Anderson was 18 years old on December 25, 1914, when British, French, and German troops climbed out of their trenches along the dreaded Western Front and walked across the bloodsoaked ‘No Man’s Land’ to shake hands. Anderson decorated with France’s highest honor, the Legion d’Honneur, never forgot that moment in his life when he celebrated Christmas with his enemies in ‘No Man’s Land.’ Indeed, it was a singular moment in history that has yet to be repeated.”

“Doomsday button” Today, there are no more trenches and every open land is “No Man’s Land.” With the technological advances in modern warfare, our planet is constantly at risk of nuclear war. It is said that in the event of an impending missile attack on the United States, the President has only 13 minutes to make a decision whether to push the “doomsday button” that launches nuclear missiles against the attacking country. That puts the world only 13 minutes away to nuclear conflagration… or worst, total annihilation. When the Soviet Union collapsed on Christmas Day, December 25, 1991, the Cold War ended, too. Since then, the prospect of nuclear doomsday has diminished and the United States and Russia have been at peace. However, there are several trouble spots in the Middle East and in Southeast Asia where nations could be drawn into another global conflict. Saving the planet As we celebrate Christmas this year, one

wonders if our planet is worth saving? For one thing, there is no other habitable planet in our solar system that people from Earth can migrate to. That makes it imperative that we should – nay, must – save our planet Earth from man-made destruction. At the end of the day, Israel and Hamas must make every effort to observe the truce while finding a way to resolve their differences. And if they can accomplish that, it would achieve for a lifetime what the “Christmas Truce” of 1914 achieved for just a day. It would be a lasting “Christmas Truce” for all mankind. Merry Christmas to all. Shalom and salaam.

Someone I Used Not to Know but Now Know Well (On an Obscure Artist known as Margo Guryan) {Dedicated to my friend and bandmate Christine Mazur, the one who introduced me to this obscure artist} orn in the late 1930s, Phil Bodner (oboe), Paul Griffin in New York, United (keyboards), and Buddy Saltzman States, Margo Guryan is (drums). Guryan has written an American songwriter/artist also songs for and collaborated whose style of Baroque Pop with many fellow artists whom music resonates in the music included Cass Elliot, Glen of many contemporary Indie/ Campbell, and Astrud Gilberto; Twee Pop bands like Club 8 and but on her own as a performer, she released only one album, Camera Obscura. Her Music in the apparently because she didn't like the pressures and the compromises Past Guryan got to release only that involved in being a public one proper full-length studio performer especially when it album, which contains melodic, came to touring. One notable song off her sunny, and poppy songs which in today's standards could easily only album was "Someone I be classified as Twee Pop— Know," for which Guryan used cutesy Indie Pop music often as a guide to write a background sung by female vocalists and contrapuntal melody the 10th whose song structures are simple movement (popularly known as but whose instrumentations are "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring") very melodically textured. The of Bach's cantata Herz und Mund musicians credited in Guryan's und Tat und Leben ('Heart and album were John Hill (guitars), Mouth and Deed and Life'), BWV Kirk Hamilton (bass and flute), 147, which Bach wrote in 1716.

B

Her Music in the Present To this day, Guryan remains active in the music industry as a songwriter and lyricist, albeit not prolifically. So far, the only recently new personal material she released was the single "16 Words" with B-side "Yes I Am" (2007), which are both politically charged songs. Guryan's penchant for Baroque music is still apparent in the sound of these songs. In 2001, Oglio Records released 25 Demos, a compilation of Guryan's recorded demos of songs she wrote for other artists. Furthermore, in 2009, the same record label released the album The Chopsticks Variations, which showcased Guryan as a Classical pianist (She was Classically trained as a child, majoring in piano). The album features Guryan's 14 variations of the popular Classical piece "The Celebrated Chop Waltz"

december 20, 2012 - january 5, 2013

(better known as "Chopsticks"), originally written in 1877 by the British composer Euphemia Allen under the pseudonym Arthur de Lulli (Yes, Allen was a female). Guryan's Influence on Twee Pop Having listened to the music of Guryan and being familiar with many bands whose music may be classified as Indie Pop or Twee Pop, I could say that Guryan's music resonates in the musical styles of many contemporary Indie Pop bands, especially those sung by female vocalists; the likes of the Scottish band Camera Obscura and the Swedish band Club 8 come to mind. Final Note I’m sharing a personal message to me of Guryan herself. Friends of Facebook, I sent her a copy of this article as soon as I finished it and she replied with this.

Hi aLfie, Thanks so much for sending me your article. Except for my birthday (Wikipedia has it wrong!) and your saying that I used Bach's "Jesu..." as a melody, all seems OK. (I only used the Bach piece as a background. I wrote a counterpoint to that piece and then used the counterpoint as the melody. It was the only way to make sure that it fit note for note.) What will your book involve? It sounds interesting. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them. I was glad to see that you think I've influenced other writers...and though I haven't been able to listen to your examples, I will! Best, Margo

Janine Tugonon bags Miss Universe 2012 runner-up honors

T

his year’s Miss Universe title still proved elusive for the Philippines as the country’s bet placed first runnerup during the coronation night held at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Wednesday night (Thursday morning in Manila). Tugonon thus made a repeat of the achievement of her predecessors Shamcey Supsup

and Venus Raj who likewise almost clinched the Miss Universe title by placing third and fourth, respectively. Judge Nigel Barker asked Tugonon if she believes speaking English should be a prerequisite to being Miss Universe. She answered: that being Miss Universe is being able to influence and inspire other people. She added that the Miss Universe title

oung Filipino-Mexican singer Jessica Sanchez collaborated with Fil-Am artist apl.de.ap, as the video for their song “Jump In” spread online last October. Jessica welcomed the opportunity to work with the established artist especially since Apl also traces his roots from the Philippines. She added that Filipinos really represent their people well, and being a half-Pinoy makes her proud of her achievements.

For his part, Apl, a member of the Grammy Award-winning hip-hop group The Black Eyed Peas, considered collaborating with Jessica a great and meaningful experience. He also expressed admiration for her voice and singing talent. The youth-oriented song “Jump In” spreads encouragement for the youth to stop hesitating and just do the things they want to do. on radio, TV and online on Dec. 2. The collaboration marks Apl’s and Jessica’s turn as ambassadors for telecommunication giant company Smart. The two talented artists were chosen as the embodiment of the song’s message. For Jessica, she jumped in and bravely pursued her dream to become a singer by joining one of the most challenging reality talent searches known in the world. For Apl, he discovered early in his youth that music was what he wanted to do so he just jumped in to do things that he haven’t done before to broaden his horizon.

Only the Beginning for R&B songstress

By Jackie Doming

T

hey say the best things come in small packages – and singer-songwriter Tiffany Ponce is no exception to this rule. The R&B powerhouse shook the stage earlier this year for the release of her debut album, Only the Beginning. Since then, she has taken the Winnipeg music scene by storm. Ponce performed her highly anticipated six-song EP for two sold-out CD release shows at SPIN Restaurant & Martini Bar last April and May. Gerard Magsino (SoULBOi) produced all six original tracks.

At the release shows, Ponce sang a set of original tracks and one cover song. The crowd favourite was her original tune Tell Me I Can’t, described by her as an inspiring anthem. “It’s about those instances where anyone’s told you that you can’t do something, or you're not good enough,” said Ponce. Music has always been Ponce’s passion. Beginning in high school, she participated in theatrical productions and choreographed hip-hop dance numbers for shows. She graduated from the Faculty of Nursing at

the University of Manitoba, and later studied voice, dance, and acting at the Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria, British Columbia. Ponce continues to work as a part-time nurse while balancing her budding music career. Although Ponce valued her time spent at the university, her passion for music always remained top of mind. “I have no regrets that I went to university and got that degree. It’s something I know I will always have and value, but I’ll continue to pursue what I love to the absolute fullest.” Ponce’s musical flavour is inspired by “the old school sounds of the late '80s and '90s.” She lists New Edition, Janet Jackson, TLC, Aaliyah and Tamia as some of her biggest influences. Since the release of her debut album, Ponce has performed at a variety of events around Winnipeg. Some of her recent vocal appearances include Rhythms for Women at Le Garage Café (June 13), Sagip Kababayan at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (Aug. 24), the 1st Annual Manitoba Filipino Street Festival at Garden City Shopping Centre (Aug. 25) and the Labour of Love Block Party on Bannatyne (Sept. 2). She opened for Filipino superstar Bamboo at the Burton Cummings Theatre (Aug. 4) and Juno Award winner Moka Only at

Pulse Nightclub (Oct. 24). This past year, she also performed in Vancouver and Toronto for Canadian Music Week. Next February, Ponce will be performing at Urban Rhapsody, a hip-hop charity concert raising funds for The Children’s Wish Foundation. Ponce will be debuting a new original song called Hopeful, which she cowrote with Studio 11's Jason Gordon for the Threads of Hope project and its worthy cause. “I am really happy, grateful, and excited for what’s to come,”

said Ponce. “I truly believe that God has put all of this in my heart for a reason.” Ponce's album Only the Beginning is available for download on iTunes. Hard copies are available at Music Trader (97 Osborne St.) and Cris D' Anne Hair Salon (302 St. Anne's Rd.). They can also be ordered online at cdbaby.com. Celebrating Canada's Game at the 100th Grey Cup

T

here were many story lines leading up to the 100th Grey Cup between the Calgary Stampeders and the Toronto Argonauts. Of particular importance to me was Calgary Stampeder quarterback Kevin Glenn's return to the big game. The other was Stampeder OL Obby Khan making it to the Grey Cup after a forced retirement last year with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. In the end, the Toronto Argonauts won the Grey Cup on home soil and both Glenn and

Khan were denied an opportunity to hoist the Grey Cup. This was my fifth Grey Cup experience and by far one of the best ones ever. The excitement started last year at the 99th Grey Cup in Vancouver when it was announced that a 10-day celebration was being planned for Toronto. Plus, with the Grey Cup being held indoors, it was easy to convince my football buddies to join the party and a great way for me to reconnect with former

Winnipeggers now living and working in Toronto. As an avid Blue Bomber fan and season ticket holder, I was also hoping that our team would make a repeat appearance this year. It was a brutal season and we didn't even make the playoffs. The season is over and I'm eagerly waiting for the 2013 season to start. Let’s get back to the Grey Cup party storyline. It’s the team parties that make the Grey Cup and this year, Touchdown Manitoba kicked off the festivities with two sold out parties with the hottest ticket in Toronto! For the several “Spirit of Edmonton” parties I’ve attended over the years, the party in Toronto was one of the biggest. Riderville, Stamps House and the Lion’s Den were busy fan party hotspots. That’s good old western hospitality at its finest. The biggest highlight of the weekend for me was being an

Filipino Journal 31

accredited CFL photographer at Rogers Centre. This would be my 2nd time shooting a CFL football game and pretty excited at the opportunity. With the Toronto Argonauts in the Grey Cup, there was a ridiculous amount of Toronto media present. Needless to say, the photographer’s room at Rogers Centre was a complete zoo. I’ve never seen so many cameras and sports lenses assembled in one place. While many fans booed Justin Beiber’s performance at

half time, I was snapping away. Also included in my camera roll were RCMP officers carrying the Grey Cup, several cheerleaders, lots of crazy CFL fans, and the Toronto Argonauts hoisting the Grey Cup. I have a couple photos of Carly Rae Jepson and still waiting for her to call me, maybe. Watching and working the 100th Grey Cup was simply amazing. This was the complete Canadian football experience for me and that is why I love CFL football.

UMAC: Christmas boxes for our loved ones in the Philippines

F

ilipinos love to send Christmas boxes of goodies and gifts to their loved ones in the Philippines. And for the past two months, in their new warehouse and office in the Maples, Gary and Aida Montiero, with the help of their assistants, were working overtime to make sure that these boxes would be received on time for Christmas. "We want our customers to be comfortable with us. And we promise that their Christmas goodies and gifts will be received by their loved ones in the Philippines before Christmas," says, Aida Montiero, the manager. UMAC -Winnipeg has been providing services of door to door boxes to the Philippines. And with the growing number of Filipino immigrants in Manitoba, UMAC-Winnipeg has all available spaces for more boxes. Their clientele increases from the City of Winnipeg, Steinbach, Neepawa, Brandon and the cities in the Western Ontario. "We send 45 ft. container every two weeks and these boxes are shipped straight to the Philippines," says Aida Montiero. Since the business of door-to-door was introduced in the middle of the 1980's, some operators had come and gone.

Competition is very stiff. And the only way to maintain its operation is to serve the clients with good service. Some promos are being offered and for UMAC-Winnipeg, Gary and Aida Montiero offer free pick-up, free strapping and free replacement box on a regular box only. And if you drop off your box in the warehouse, you receive $10 off. "It is a real hardwork but it is rewarding because we are giving our kababayans a good service, and especially we want that their loved ones will be happy when they received the holiday goodies and gifts for their Christmas in the Philippines. Our service is all year round. We have bigger warehouse spaces and we guarantee that the shipment of boxes is shipped straight to the Philippines, Gary Montiero, owner, says. And UMAC-Winnipeg has a vital role in the delivery of relief goods in the Philippines. For the past many disasters in the Philippines, like Ondoy, UMACWinnipeg helped shipped those relief boxes to the Philippines. As Aida Montiero says: "Helping the needy is our primary concern. Whenever or wherevent the needs are felt and wanted, UMAC can help. And this is also our volunteer service to our kababayans."

Horoscope This is a day where you can benefit from becoming more aware of your emotional state. You have to try to stay focused on the present and live this day conscientiously. One way to get your mind more focused on the here and now is by promising yourself that you can have an hour or two of time to goof off later in the afternoon.

This may be the time of year you want to focus on your family and spending time with those you love, but when opportunity knocks you need to answer. Action is required to bring dreams to life, so it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. People can help if you let them in on your plans.

This is a good time to take note of inner goals and aspirations. With the quick pace of life, we don’t spend enough time alone to find out if we are on the right path according to our inner voice. It’s always a good idea to share your life with those whose qualities mirror the ones you value the most.

This might be a better time to plan. Be realistic and thoughtful in your actions. It’s a good time for putting the finishing touches on restoration projects, or just recycling something you haven’t paid attention to in a while. Don’t get distracted along the way. Stay on target.

You are in a new situation right now, and it’s very exciting! But you are still learning the ins and outs of what you need to do and what you can expect, so try to be patient with yourself. New friends bring more activities, new introductions, and the possibility of meeting someone new, not online, but through a real life introduction.

A short trip, or at least a lot of activity and movement, is very likely now. Communications of all kinds play an important role in your life now. Everyone experiences ups and downs in life; what separates the progressive from the regressive is how you deal with the downs. No matter how trying your current circumstances may be a positive attitude can assist you in dealing with it more effectively.

Travel, communicating, and other mental as well as social connections with people are emphasized for you now. Begin your challenges without comparing yourself to anyone else and you will be taking the correct approach. Enjoy each moment and try not to get ahead of yourself. Let love flow and the relationship will blossom without you having to push it.

It is a favorable day to fulfill your desires. Success from efforts is likely. It can be very motivating to realize you’ve accomplished most of what you set out to do. Doing things in a different way might put off the people who think they know you inside and out, but don’t let that stop you.

Today try to protect yourself from people around you who bring negative energy into your life. They will not only affect your peace of mind but will create hurdles in your work as well. If you find yourself getting irritable today, take a break from what you are doing and relax for a few minutes.

PAHALANG

You’ll be in the mood to mix things up today, which is healthy --- changing your approach or style every now and then is a good idea. Keep your eyes open, and your ear to the ground. You’re in a learning phase now, which may require adapting to changing circumstances.

This day is likely to inspire you to do something totally different. You will be carried away by your desires. This is a time to let this happen and enjoy the scenery. If things seem to be running smoothly around you, they are, so let them. In order to make a sound decision you need to have all the facts and there is really only one way to go about obtaining them.

Good trends in personal life will make you happy. Today is the perfect day to begin this journey. This requires you doing the research and then becoming an expert at whatever it is that you are passionate about. Every now and then, you get to relax and rejoice, thanks in large part to your hard work.

ordinaryong tao o pangkaraniwang sanggol lamang. Pastor Junie Josue is Senior Pastor of International Worship Centre at 1077 St. James St. (Worship Services: Sundays- 9 a.m. Tagalog, 10:45 a.m. English service) and Kildonan Place at 1555 Regent Avenue (Worship Service: 10:30 a.m. English) and host of radio program Higher Life on CKJS 810 AM, Monday to Friday, 8:50 a.m. For more information call 774-4478.

n December 7th and 8th, 2012 Garden City Shopping Centre in Winnipeg teamed up with CKJS Radio for the “People Gotta Eat” campaign for the benefit of Winnipeg Harvest and the Children’s Hospital Foundation. From morning until evening, CKJS announcers from different multilingual programs participated

and volunteered their time, talent and donations to the great cause. People heeded the call, as they flocked to Garden City with friends and family to give whatever they can to help the needy, especially this holiday season. New and unwrapped toys were also received for the Children’s Hospital Foundation. As an added bonus, people who went to the

location got a chance to win a pair of tickets to the Heart band concert at the MTS Centre in March of next year. And the winner is, Lucia Gonzalez! Congratulations! From the management and staff of Garden City and CKJS Radio, we thank everyone who supported our food and toy drive. You made a lot of people happy this Christmas! Salamat po!

Slow & Steady: Churchill Drift

I

’m going to admit this year behind the wheel has been extremely exciting. Week after week for the last year, I’ve been in the driver’s seat of a brand new vehicle. Some fast, some not so fast. Many of which were extremely fun to drive. Very few, not so fun and fun is always a relative term. Last summer, driving the Ford F-150 Raptor down a straight and extremely flat highway was not fun. Driving the Raptor through a rock quarry and over sand dunes, fun doesn’t even begin to describe the feeling behind the wheel. The setting for the next driving adventure was in the polar bear capitol of the world, Churchill, Manitoba. Flying up to Churchill for a work project last month, I had no idea I would be able to sit behind the wheel of Churchill’s iconic Tundra Buggy as I drive along the shores of Hudson Bay. These massive custom built monster bus-like trucks slumber along the frozen tundra of the sub-arctic full of wide-eyed tourists eager to see their first polar bear.

Driving the Tundra Buggy across the frozen tundra was almost like driving a big school bus, except the trails are extremely bumpy and turning the Buggy takes several turns of the wheel. Except for some key landmarks, the buggy trails that wind through the Churchill Wildlife Management Area are unmarked. Thanks to our guides, a GPS navigation system was not necessary. Satellite radio on the other hand would have been a welcome bonus. Everything about the Tundra Buggy is huge. They’re outfitted to carry 40 passengers with short school bus type bench seating and internally heated by a 13,000BTU propane stove. While temperatures outside the buggy are -30 (with windchill), everyone is nice and toasty inside until you open the windows when you see polar bears approaching. The Tundra Buggy is powered by the same engine you would find in many semi-trailers, a DT 466 International diesel backed by a 653 Allison automatic transmission. The engine only

pumps out 240horsepower and gives the Tundra Buggy lots of low end torque. You won’t be burning rubber on the tundra as the Tundra Buggy has a top speed of 40-45km/hr. The tires on the Tundra Buggy are just under 6’ tall and provide enough ground clearance to get through snow drifts and shallow ice ponds. The 5-10 tonne cab of the Tundra Buggy sits on top of a Navistar International truck chassis and keeps curious tourists safely out of reach from even more curious polar bears. Polar bears standing upright on their hind legs can reach up to 8-11ft. The 3m high back deck of the Tundra Buggy also provides an open air experience while watching polar bears. It’s also a great vantage point for everyone that has a panorama feature on

Filipino Journal 45

their cameras and smartphones. Due to the unforgiving terrain and extremely bumpy ride, no passengers are allowed on the back deck while the Tundra Buggy is moving. As Canadians, remember this is all in your back yard. On the several tours through Churchill, I’ve met people from all over the world that have

Churchill on their bucket list. Traveling up to Churchill during polar bear season in late October to early November should be on everyone’s bucket list. If it’s not, I suggest you add it now! Driving the Tundra Buggy was extremely fun and the best reward of that adventure was when several polar bears came by to say hello.

Cartagena, the "Emerald of the Caribbean"

W

here is it - Northeastern region of Colombia on the Caribbean coast of South America What is there to see - El Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, the walled historic old city, Las Murallas, Palacio de la Inquisicion, Plaza Bolivar, Las Bovedas, Cartagena Cathedral Random facts - Colombia is the largest emerald producer and second largest fresh-cut flowers exporter in the world Interesting trivia - Cartagena is a sister city of Manila, Philippines

We don't know exactly what we expect to see and discover in Cartagena. Much to our surprise we find Cartagena an interesting vibrant city with a colourful past much like Manila. Our guided tour begins with a scenic drive through a residential area called Manga. En route we witness republican architecture and several colonial mansions restored to their original splendour. The first stop is the mustsee "El Castillo San Felipe de Barajas", a well-preserved castle/ fortress built by the Spaniards in

the 17th century for protection against pirates while shipping gold to Europe. Located strategically on top of a hill overlooking the city and harbour, the sentinel is said to be the most important work of Spanish engineering in any of their colonies. Aside from its complex maze of underground tunnels meant to facilitate supply and provisions as well as evacuation of inmates, the bastion features vantage points for artillery, underground galleries and gunpowder warehouses. We visited the famed Old City, a walled city (reminds us of Intramuros) with cobblestone narrow streets and Spanish colonial homes with flower-filled courtyards and wood-beamed balconies and stone towers. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is connected by a series of bridges and divided by 17th century walls into an "historic old city" and a cosmopolitan "modern city". A structure in the old city quite popular to tourists is "Las Bovedas", the vaults attached to

the walls that were originally built as dungeons for military purposes and as storerooms for munitions and provisions before they became jail cells. Now they house shops well-stocked with traditional Colombian merchandise and vast array of souvenirs from hammock to postcards. We strolled to the 18th century "Palacio de la Inquisicion", one of the most important historical edifices in the city and an eerie grim reminder of atrocities of the Spanish colonial rule with its display of various instruments of torture like the heretic fork and the female breast squeezer. The palace served as a tribunal court that tried, judged and convicted anyone the Catholic Church viewed as a heretic, a witch or a devil. There was no tolerance - during those days you had to believe in the Roman Catholic Church, if not, you're subjected to involuntary confession and torture. Across the palace is the lively Plaza Bolivar, with a statue of Gen.

Simon Bolivar, the Venezuelan most important military and political leader who played a key role in Hispanic America's struggle for independence from the Spanish colonial rule. At this small park shaded with trees and palms, you can purchase bottled water, fruits or beer from local vendors with whom I practice my knowledge of Spanish. Nearby is the massive Cartagena Cathedral which dates back to the 16th century. And within sight is the San Pedro Claver Church honoring missionary St. Peter Claver, the patron saint of slaves and the first saint canonized in the Western hemisphere. After visiting historic sites and wandering the narrow streets and some of the squares of the Old City under the hot sun we make our way to the modern residential district of "Bocagrande" (Big Mouth) and capped our day off with shopping at the Pierino Gallo.

The Republic of Adobo by Rod E. Cantiveros

Christmas is for children Suddenly last Friday, December 14TH, within two minutes, 20 children lost their lives, less than 12 days before Christmas. Friday was supposed to be another fun day in school. Before the bell rang, they hugged and kissed their moms and dads. Then, suddenly, from nowhere a gunman broke into their school and started the carnage. It was so sudden and horrific scenario. Twenty children and six school officials dead! They would never sing Christmas songs nor receive the gifts. One of the children was assigned to be an angel in the school’s Christmas Pageant. Most of them would want to see Santa Clause because they were pretty and nice! The tragic event happened before Christmas. And the spirit of peace and love have dimmed. The alleged killer had stolen the joy of Christmas and their loved ones’ hearts were broken. And instead of singing Christmas song, it was replaced cries and tears of sorrows. Santa Claus is in tears too as he tries to find the reason behind the carnage. His children’s faces were full of smiles and glow in their eyes. In spite of this horrible event, he decided to travel all over the world to bring tidings, joys,

greetings and toys to every child. For now, Santa’s list will be less twenty. As parents, we are numbed. No words could describe the killing spree. A big why is hanging over my eyes: why did it happen so close to Christmas day? As if it were a nightmare. Yes, Christmas is for our children. When I was young, I did look forward for Christmas. Nurtured by strict adherence on savings, I had the list of what I wanted for Christmas. Furthermore, i was excited and had full of high expectation on the gifts of our godparents. We had a faint image of Santa Clause. Our family was preoccupied to decorate our house and to prepare for our “Noche Buena”. For me, as a child, Christmas is for us, children. When our two sons were young, Ron and John looked forward with so much anticipation and excitement for Christmas. My wife and I would bring them to the shopping mall for Santa’s picture. And we would pass by at the toys store to find the toys they liked. And on Christmas Eve, we enjoyed going to church together. And at “noche buena,” our family joined together sharing the food.

Next day, boxing day, excitement took over as they opened their gifts. And I could see in their eyes, their smiles, the happiness, the joy, the sparkle and hope: a true picture of a happy and an innocent child. For my two young sons, Christmas is definitely for our children. It was an ordinary Friday school day and the teachers and the children were looking forward for a great weekend, probably, Christmas shopping for food and gifts. Newtown is known to be the best place to raise a family. One Winnipeg family, the Greene family, moved to Newton, Connecticut for a new life, a new challenge, new friends and new neighbors. But, suddenly, with just two minutes, every had changed in Newton. Newton will be never be the same again. I could not find the reasons of the killing spree. I imagine how a child would face death at that very moment. She or he might be smiling as if the gun would be a great Christmas toy. So innocent, so fragile to understand the vagaries and vanities in life. The danger they were facing was so intense. And with the volley of bullets, they would be helpless and no time to think about their parents’ protections. I could image how a child was felled with bullets and would fall on a cold floor clinging into their dear young lives. And I could feel the grief of the parents and loved ones knowing that the lives of their loved once were cut off instantly. The loss was unbearable. The event was unthinkable and beyond reason. The way they died was irrational

Filipino Journal 49

and Godless. That very moment, the time stopped. And no one could count how many tears had fallen. I could feel as if I were the father of a fallen child. And I am soulfully affected. And the whole world is drifted into grieving moments. Looking at their pictures, and look at their smiling faces, and their eyes were glowing with a hint of youthful naughtiness. I do feel that these children were my children too .Numbed and tonguetied, I silently grieved and prayed. What a waste of lives and these children might become doctors, a diva, a scientist, a teacher, a soldier, a volunteer, a movie star, or even a politician, in the future. But, they would not be. Their dreams were shattered the same way that their parents and loved ones’ hearts were shattered but then, their dreams must not die with them. Memories will define the way on how the survivors would become someday. Memorials will

be held for memories will remains. And their untimely demise will be remembered by millions because of their legacies given to us. Those lovely children will not age in time. They are forever young in our hearts: forever loved and cherished. This Christmas, remember the twenty young children and six adults with prayers. They did not ask for this senseless actions.. They faced death with youthful vigilance and acceptance. And also remember those other children who lost their lives because of poverty and because they were victims of political conflicts. Think and feel that their short stay here on earth will make a bigger difference in our lives. Indeed, those children in the world, my children, your children, and those 20 children in Newtown, they are all our universal children. Christmas, a season of joy and hope, is for our children, but now, less twenty.

lowing, radiant, pore perfect skin is every woman's dream, especially as we age. You feel better when your skin is healthy, and your makeup goes on smoother and your confidence is boosted. When used correctly, not only does makeup highlight the good and mask the not-so-good, but it can make anyone look more youthful. First off you want to always ensure that your skin is always hydrated. Then another important thing before putting makeup on is to “prime” it. Makeup on top of skin that hasn’t been primed only accentuates imperfections you may be trying to hide such as, fine lines, dryness, flakiness, and large pores. Read along to see which products we suggest. To get the look come to PROVICI Cosmetics in the heart of the exchange!

Step 1

The first thing you want to do before starting your makeup is to hydrate your skin really well. Winter is the one season you for sure need to invest in a good moisturizer because it makes such a difference for your foundation. Tia used the Hydrating Crème Concentrate, which is a moisturizer that helps teach your skin to naturally rehydrate itself over time.

After

Step 3

Step 2

While the moisturizer is soaking in, then you want to start with your eye makeup. Once your eyes are complete, you can now apply a dime sized amount of our Retexturizing Face Primer all over the entire face or areas you would like to focus on. The primer has a silicone base to it to help the makeup from setting into any imperfections on the skin. It also helps add another layer of moisture to the skin for extra smoothness.

Once your foundation has been applied you may feel washed out because you have taken all the natural color out of your face. So you want to warm up that skin again. This is also how you make your skin appear youthful. Apply Petal Baked Mineralized Blush to the apples of your cheeks. When we get older you want to apply blush more to the apples of the cheeks to add fullness to the face. Also apply a blush with minerals in it to prevent that dry look.

Purchase any eye PROVICVI eye shadow for $15 and receive our Glamour Eyes Palette for ONLY $10 -- a sensational savings of $19!!! Please present this coupon at time of purchase. Expires Jan 5, 2013. Not valid with booked appointments. Tia’s image-consulting firm, PROVICI, has attracted a loyal following in the entertainment and business communities. She has recently styled individuals for print media and live entertainment, and for awards shows such as the Junos and the Grammys. Check out Tia on Shaw TV channel 9 on Tuesday evenings, and Wednesdays before noon. Kung meron kayong questions, comments or suggestions send an e-mail to tia@ provici.com. She welcomes your questions and is available for personal appointments. Just log onto www.provici.com or visit Tia at PROVICI Cosmetics, now located at 233 Mc Dermot Ave. or call (204) 957-1544 for more info.

Step 4

For an added highlight apply Shining Star Loose Shimmer Powder on top of the apples of the cheeks for luminosity.

Step 5

To finish off the look apply our hydrating and non sticky super tinted gloss in Super Grape to entire lip.
