fter 18 years at the Mantioba Legislature, long time Inkster MLA, Kevin Lamoureux won the battle of the Kevins in the Winnipeg North Byelection by defeating NDP candidate Kevin Chief. Filipina candidate, Julie Javier, the acting executive director of the Philippine Canadian Centre finished in third place. In his election night victory speech at the Punjab Banquet Hall on Mandalay Drive, Lamoureux said, “I thank you from the bottom of my heart for trusting us and giving us this second seat in Winnipeg. I promise to make a difference. From MLA to MP, the journey has just begun. Lamoureux is the second Liberal
from Manitoba and now joins Winnipeg South Centre MP, Anita Neville in the House of Commons. The Liberals pulled off the surprising win as Winnipeg North was a NDP stronghold for the last 13 years with former NDP MP Judy Wasylecia-Leis and a third place showing by the Liberals in the last federal election. Official results from Elections canada: Kevin Lamoureux (Liberal) 7,303 (46.3%); Kevin Chief (NDP) 6,490 (41.2) and Julie Javier (Conservative) 1,647 (10.4%). Total number of ballots cast 15,765. Voter turnout was at 30.8%.

Ang Pagiging Dakila Ngayong Pasko by: Pastor Junie Josue
H

books many current young adults are into is not those which involve puppy love, handsome boys next door, and cute girls in school and the neighborhood. Instead, they are more interested in the so-called vampire-themed fantasy romance novels—those which have sexy and beautiful and handsome vampires (or other horror characters, for that matter) falling in love with equally alluring humans or vice versa.

Despite Age and Experience, Some Remain Romantic and Idealistic (On Some Classic Teen Romance Novels)
I
may be really getting old, the reason I feel like I’m not that in touch anymore with what kind of romance novels teenagers in this generation are reading in the comforts of their bedrooms. However, based on what I’m
learning from commercial media and from some teenagers I know, many if not most of them are as romantic as many people my age were 25 years ago; meaning, they still read romance novels. However, the type of romance
Nothing is wrong with that. After all, books regardless of genre are all food for the brain. Whatever detractors might have to say, they remain a part of literature. In fact, being an eclectic bibliophile myself, I have also in my collection books in the vampire-themed genre— like Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series (Twilight, 2005; New Moon, 2006; Eclipse, 2007; and Breaking Dawn, 2008) and Anne Rice’s latest Vampire Chronicles (Merrick, 2000; Blood and Gold, 2001; Blackwood Farm, 2002; and Blood Canticle, 2003). However, what many teenage and young-adult booklovers might have been missing these days are those reality-based, trueto-life romance novels popular in the 1980s like Sweet Dreams and Sweet Valley High. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of Books) A series of 233 numbered stand-alone young-adult romance novels, Sweet Dreams were published from 1981 through to 1996, written mostly by U.S. writers like Barbara Conklin, Janet Quin-Harkin, Laurie Lykken, and Yvonne Greene. The stories tell of highschool drama and romance: first love, first dates, first heartbreaks. My personal best-three are books #1 (P.S. I Love You), #22 (Secret Identity), and #170 (Rock n’ Roll Sweetheart). These were some of the first books that inspired me to write similar stories about love and relationships.

P.S. I Love You, by Barbara Conklin (September 1981): “When her father left after the divorce, Mariah lost her sense of family. Now she’s lost her special summer, too. Instead of fulfilling her dream to become a writer, Mariah has to help her mother with a house-sitting job in very rich Palm

Springs. People with a lot of money make Mariah uncomfortable. Until she meets Paul Strobe, the rich boy next door. Paul’s not a snob, and he doesn’t act superior. In fact, his sandy hair and blue eyes make Mariah fall for him. With Paul, Palm Springs becomes romantic after all. But there’s one major problem: Paul is seriously ill and all his family’s money cannot help him. Will Mariah lose Paul, too, just when she’s found her first love?” Secret Identity, by Joanna Campbell (September 1982): “When she meets Eric Bliss, Jena Maxwell forgets her disappointment about not going to Europe for the summer. Jena falls deeply in love with the gentle and handsome Eric. But as their fabulous summer passes, Jena begins to wonder why Eric is so mysterious, quiet about his family and friends. Then Jena learns the truth about Eric, and her beautiful summer of happiness and love is ruined.” Rock n’ Roll Sweetheart, by Laurie Lykken (March 1990): “Chrissy McCall has always wanted to be a rockstar, and when she meets Robin James, lead singer of a popular local band, the big break she’s been hoping for seems clear. Not only does he invite her to a rehearsal, but he also gives her a chance to audition some of her original materials. But that’s not the only reason Chrissy

Sweet Dreams books are no longer available in bookstores like Chapters and McNally Robinson, but you will still find copies at many of the used-books shops around Winnipeg at very affordable prices. A few years ago, I chanced upon on eBay someone who was selling her near-complete Sweet Dreams collection. An avid fan of the series, I purchased it. I am yet to finish reading all of them, but I’ve since begun rereading especially my favorite ones. While reliving the experience, I’ve realized that stories about young love, which I first discovered in high school, never lose their spell on people who remain romantic and idealistic despite their age and experience. Deep within the pages of the books, I could still get lost in bittersweet delight. The Last Leaf I guess vampires or no vampire, novels about romance and relationships will remain well-loved especially by teenagers and the young at heart. However, there’s one thing I’m sure though-many teens nowadays would rather that their lovers bite them on the neck than kiss them on the lips. This sounds sexier; but my advice to young booklovers, try to get your hands also on some old romance books like Sweet Dreams, to make yourself somehow feel like truly innocent teenyboppers especially in this age when growing up seems to have become a fast-forward process.

New immigrants finding jobs with Manitoba START
New centre will connect new immigrants with needed services
M
anitoba START, a new information and referral centre in downtown Winnipeg that will refer new immigrants to settlement and employment services, was officially opened today by Premier Greg Selinger. “New immigrants need information and support to successfully adjust to life in Manitoba,” said Selinger. “The new Manitoba START office will be the first step for all new immigrants in Winnipeg, connecting them with the services they need.” The Manitoba START office at 228 Notre Dame Ave. will provide a range of services for new immigrants including: ● registering newcomers by collecting basic information to ensure they are connected to the most appropriate services and information; ● assessing the immediate needs of newcomers including reviewing individual circumstances,
discussing readiness for employment and identifying training needs; and ● referring individuals to services that fit their needs such as registering them for settlement orientation programs and employment preparation workshops, booking appointments with appropriate employment services and providing information on Winnipeg’s core settlement service agencies. “Manitoba START will be the starting point for newcomers once they arrive, providing a smooth transition from pre-arrival to postarrival services,” said Labour and Immigration Minister Jennifer Howard. “It will provide a clear access point for new immigrants and reduce confusion about where they need to go for the services they need.” Manitoba’s population continues to grow through increased immigration. The province welcomed 13,520
immigrants in 2009. Preliminary figures show that Manitoba received 12,243 immigrants in the first nine months of 2010, an increase of 16.9 per cent over the same period last year.

Life Lessons of my Mount Apo Climb Far from Quiet by Joan Duhaylungsod
I
do not know how many of us include climbing the country’s tallest peak, part of our respective bucket lists. Well, I do. I grew that strong desire to climb the Philippines’ tallest volcano, Mount Apo. And well, just a month ago, I made it to the top. Mount Apo is located in southern Mindanao, Philippines. Known to be the highest point in the country, it is 9, 692 feet tall, making the treks quite long, and certainly exhausting. My dad, perplexed about my plan, asked me what got into me why i decided to climb the mountain. These, I let my dad
understand : firstly, I want to prove that there’s more in Mount Apo other than the way I see her in the Philippine postcards; secondly, just like the intentions of the pilgrimage, I thought of this climb as a personal and spiritual sojourn. So, off i went along with other 11 friends- six of them were firsttime climbers, and the others have been going to and fro the volcano. To the latter, the experience itself never fails to nourish the mountaineers’ hearts, so they keep coming back to see Apo. We were in the wild for four days. We, carrying our huge
backpacks, went up and down the steep slopes and cliffs, surmounted the rockies and boulders, balanced our body weights so as not to fall into the ravines, and held on to the trees’ roots or bushes, at least, for dear life. We were drenched by heavy rains but there was no stopping the trek till we reached the destination. We slipped in the mud, sustained bruises and cuts, and became somewhat unkempt for that time being. It was a risky venture especially for amateur climbers like us. Aside from the challenge of the changing weather and the physical exhaustion per se, the terrains were somehow treacherous . One wrong move, and it can cause someone his life. We found shelter in our tents. We drank the water we chanced upon in the rivers and creeks. There was no a la carte preparation for our meals, not even nice mattresses where we could sleep. Basically, it was a no-fancy-four-day-kindof-life. But it was there that we realized that we can still be happy in poverty and deprivation of technology. It was fun-filled four days, and just when we thought we would not be able to survive without facebook-ing, BBM-ing, or Tweet-ing, we lived past them all. i was able to talk to people and had good conversations with them, face to face, without phone beeps and rings distracting. Oh, did I ever
feel a real social being again, so human. And as to this climb as a personal sojourn, I was blissful for having made it to the peak. I conquered the mountain and I conquered myself. Climbing a mountain is actually no different from making do of my life. There were instances that I wanted to give up, but the thought of what-mightbe-there-at-the-peak just gave me the drive to take more steps, and go beyond the physical exhaustion. I endured for my dream. There were instances when we slipped, fell, and rolled over- some botches we got into, but then we all managed to laugh about the bloopers, stood up again, and went on stride. We really cannot be so serious about the climb, more so with life. Some bad steps can really hurt us just before we know it, but then again, we still can redeem ourselves, if we choose to. Reaching the peak put me in the state of euphoria. i guess this has been what my mountaineer friends have been telling me: a peculiar fulfillment. The summit is overlooking the vast lands of Mindanao, and its peninsula. I was above the clouds already, freshest wind kissing my face, and blue skies reaching out to me. I was truly mesmerized by God’s creation, and was downrightly humbled because I was able to see His designs.
As I was downward-sloping, I bore that heart filled with joy. For one, it is my personal triumph to conquer the mountain. I conquered my fear of heights, my fear of the unknown, and my fear to shun away from my comfort zones. Second, I was taught by my experience to appreciate the things around me- the flowers, the greens, the fauna, the hills, the lakes, and even the friendly faces of the natives in the mountains- which have gone unnoticed because of an overwhelming career demands or lifestyle fads. And on a personal note, i told myself that since i made it to Mt. Apo, I can no more be afraid to conquer greater heights, literally or figuratively speaking. Now, I am not saying that you all go and climb the highest peak to experience the same thing I did. If you can, do try. If not, that’s okay, but just live the essence of enduring for something greater than life- your dream, or someone else’s. And by the way, I’ve proven to myself that the Mount Apo image we see in the postcard is far too bare that the real beauty unfolded when I was there.

Sex, Drugs, and Rock… Not Always! (part 1) (On the Intellectual Aspect of Rock Music)
A
s early as the 1960s, many parents—as largely influenced by religious and community leaders as well as misinformed media—have always associated Rock music with sex, drugs, and other vices. Some parents believe that their Rock-music-loving teenagers are treading a hedonistic and dangerous path; because of listening to Rock music, their innocent children become capable of killing people randomly and of engaging in other heinous crimes. They stubbornly insist that Rock artists through their nonsense and pure evil lyrics are the culprits behind this. I could only shake my head in sympathy for such ignorance and prejudice. For one, not all members of Rock bands lead a life of booze and drugs and promiscuity. (And even if many do, their music should be taken separately, without the taint of their troubled and troubling personal lives.) Most significantly, Rock music is not always about sex, drugs, and other excesses. If only they will look into the lyrics of many Rock songs and concepts of many Rock albums, they will realize that these are actually a mine of societal commentaries and literary and philosophical references.
Beyond the Haze and the Booze Here are a few examples of both commercially and critically acclaimed albums in the annals of Rock music which prove that the diverse genre is not a dumb or stupid kind of music as many self-righteous influential leaders and other misinformed detractors claim.
features lyrics inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and by the philosophy of the Russian-American novelist Ayn Rand. Reign in Blood (1986), the third studio album by the American Thrash Metal band Slayer, contains lyrics that dwell on subjects like death, religion, insanity, and murderers—which may simply be likened to a truecrime book or a psychological thriller or horror film. ...And Justice for All (1988), the fourth studio album of the American Thrash Metal band Metallica, features lyrical contents that focus on political and legal injustice.
Filipino Journal
Final Note Rock music has long become a part of pop culture, so it should be patronized, promoted or at the least, acknowledged. It’s been more than 40 years since the decade when typically self-righteous religious and community leaders have started lambasting and discriminating Rock music chiefly because of the unusual styles and theatrics of many of its forerunners. Do you still believe their ignorant and misleading claims? Haven’t these bigots realized by now that the problem really is their narrow minds and their limited understanding of music per se?
9
These music discriminators are the modern counterparts of the witchhunters prevalent in Europe and North America in the period spanning from 1480 to 1700. Sad to say, despite the advancement of human civilization, “witchhunt mentality” still exists to this day. *Witchhunting is not the hunt for real witches (mythical and fantastic characters depicted in fairy tales and fantasy fiction) for there were none and will never be any in real life; instead, it is the persecution of people whose ideas often challenged those of whoever was in religious or political authority.
Congratulations to the newly wedded couple Don Campbell and Claire Gellegani,
Neon Bible (2007), the second album of the Canadian Indie Rock band Arcade Fire, is—according to the bandleader, himself— inspired by the idea that watching television makes people absorb i d e a s from your relatives and friends especially Lilibeth Velasquez and Konina Pajemolin.
unknowingly, affecting how they view the world.
Three Friends (1972), the third studio release of the British Progressive Rock band Gentle Giant, is a concept album that deals with three childhood friends who each followed a different journey as they were growing up. Each pursued a different career in life—one became a laborer, the second a clerical worker, and the last an artist. In fact, concept albums like this are very common for Progressive Rock bands—a positive aspect of Rock music many critics and moralists often ignore.
All Hope Is Gone (2008), the fourth studio album by the American Nu Metal band Slipknot, has a theme that revolves around the belief of the band’s lyricist that there are many people who are disguising politics as religion and dictating taste and turning it into policies.
21st Century Breakdown (2009), the eighth studio album of the American Punk Rock band Green Day, is—according to the chief lyricist, Billy Joe Armstrong, himself—a “snapshot of the era in which we live as we question and try to make sense of the selfish manipulation going on around Fly by Night (1975), the second us, whether it be the government, studio album of the Canadian religion, media, or frankly any Progressive Rock band Rush, form of authority.”

It stands as a beacon of hope, fervently chiseling and churning out students who aren’t just market-ready but also lifeready. Educare is based on the five cardinal values of “truth, righteousness, peace, love, and non-violence.” Its founder—the great humanitarian and teacher Sathya Sai Baba—was born on November 23, 1926, in the small village of Puttaparthi in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. Charice denies having special feelings with “American Idol”
F
ilipina international singer Charice doused cold water to speculations that she and singer David Archuleta of American Idol fame are making “beautiful music” together. Rumors on the reported Charice-David secret romance were fuelled by their recent musical performances together that include a duet in a Christmas album. Fans also noted that the American singer has only praises for Charice’s talent and personality in his social networking account and even in media interviews.
For her part, the 18-year old Filipina singer said her priorities remain her singing career and studies. Although she is already of legal age to be in a relationship, she just considers Archuleta a good friend and a great artist. Asked by a fan during an interview if she thinks of special persons when performing a love song, she said it is normal for her to sing a love song with feelings even if she isn’t in love. Charice is currently enrolled in Information Technology as an online student.
Prima donna tag hounds Marian Rivera
M
arian Rivera remains one of the most bankable female stars in local showbiz, yet several reports of her alleged diva attitude as an actress, endorser and artist hounds her from time to time. Recent reports have it that in one recent commercial shoot, she refused to do her scenes outdoor because it will damage her complexion. Another incident related that Rivera reportedly asked the staff of “Darna” to carry her to the set as she reportedly refused to be dirtied by the mud on the ground. Reports of snobbery and bad attitude antic also abounds. In an
incident while interacting with her fans, she reportedly threw a magazine which the fan requested to sign after seeing another actress on the cover. Her ugly encounter with neophyte actress Bella Padilla was the showbiz hot news for weeks. The newbie Padilla allegedly suffered verbal abuse after Rivera got jealous with her during some scenes with Dingdong Dantes in a Filipino adaptation of a popular Korean soap. Rivera was also caught in a video footage humiliating a guy during a taping after she allegedly got offended when the man took videos of her.

‘Goodbye, I hate to see you go’
D
ays after President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino confirmed that he was dating his stylist Liz Uy, sources to P-Noy and Liz told ABS-CBN News that P-Noy “has not been successful in winning the celebrity stylist’s heart – at least, not yet.” Malacañang maintained its stance of “No comment” and even the “King of Talk” Boy Abunda, who is a close family friend of the Aquinos, wouldn’t talk about it. Well, like they say, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” When someone texted PNoy about the breakup, he texted back, “Sorry, we’re not showbiz.” I disagree, if you’re Da Prez, you’re love life is the number one showbiz entertainment in the country. However, P-Noy’s eldest sister Ballsy Aquino-Cruz said that she is “still hopeful that his brother and celebrity stylist Liz Uy will remain friends even though they have reportedly stopped dating.” Ballsy said that if the report about their breakup was true, she would still expect Liz to continue as PNoy’s stylist. That’s weird! If the rumor about the breakup was true, then the question is: Who dumped whom? And why? This reminds me of Sue Thomson’s song, “Have a good time.” The song goes: Goodbye, I hate to see you go but have a good time So long, I’ll miss you, dear, I know but have a good time
Have your fling, be gay with your new love, I’m setting you free Dance and sing, pretend that it’s true love, don’t worry ‘bout me I know I know that tears will only drive you farther away farther away Just go, forget that I’m alive, it’s your holiday When you’re tired of being reckless and carefree Remember that I’ll be waiting to welcome you home So have a good time Bye, baby. Gee, I hate to see you go but have a good time So long, you know, I’m really gonna miss you but have a good time And, honey when you’re tired of being reckless and carefree Remember that I’ll be waiting to welcome you home, so have a good time Have a good time, baby. *** Yup, it’s all about good time, baby. Liz would just be another name added to P-Noy’s long list of former girlfriends -- 18 as of last count – which would make Liz 19th. Hey, it seems like PNoy’s love life is just like playing golf. You play 18 holes to finish a round of golf. Well, I guess he had just started another round of golf beginning with Liz. With 17 more holes to go, by the time he finished the round, he’d be 75 years old.
Among his former girlfriends were celebs Korina Sanchez, Bernadette Sembrano, and Shalani Soledad. P-Noy claimed that he’s been seeing different people since his breakup with Shalani last September. Yup, I remember reading about Trish, Barbie, and lately, Liz. Indeed, numerous sightings of P-Noy dating other women have been reported in the past few days. My investigative reporter James Macaquecquec texted me the other day: “P-Noy seen holding hands with Ai-Ai de las Alas.” Ay naku! Naloko na! Maybe P-Noy should reconcile with Shalani. But I’m sure Willie Revillame would object. Willie is rumored to be courting Shalani. As Willie’s co-host in the new game show, “Willing Willie,” I’m not sure if Shalani would willingly take P-Noy back… unless P-Noy would be serious this time and take her as his wife. Hey, it’s about time P-Noy settles down and starts raising a family. A tale of two plagiarists… Two government officials were caught plagiarizing. The first was Supreme Court Justice Mariano del Castillo who was caught red-handed lifting other people’s literary work without crediting them. But he was able to convince 10 of his cohorts in the Supreme Court that he’s not guilty of plagiary because he didn’t have any “malicious intent.” But I thought lifting – or stealing -other people’s intellectual property is “malicious” by itself, to say the

least. I guess one of the perks of being a justice of the Supreme Court is you can get away with just about anything… including thievery. The other government official was Tourism Undersecretary Vicente “Enteng” Romano III who got himself in hot water when it he allegedly plagiarized Poland’s tourism logo. The new “Pilipinas kay ganda” logo and the “Polska” logo have similarities in style and font. One might even say that the same artist could have designed the two logos. In the world of art, it’s called “inspired” since it’s not really a plagiary. Heck, I’ve seen artworks that were “inspired” by the styles of Picasso, Dali and Miro. But were they plagiarized? Nope. But Enteng took full responsibility for the fiasco and immediately tendered his “irrevocable resignation.” That’s what an honorable gentleman with high self-esteem would do. I hope that Enteng has set a standard for erring officials to follow.
Pacman going for 9/9… There have been some talks that boxing icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao would be matched against WBC middleweight champion Argentine Sergio Martinez. If Pacman beats Martinez, that will be his ninth world title in as many weight divisions. Go for it, Pacman! You have nothing to lose but head! There is a story of a little boy. All he had was a head without a body. So his mom put him by window to watch the outside world. The little boy would watch the other kids romp around outside. It made him very sad. So he asked his fairy godmother to give him a body so he can go outside and play with the other kids. His fairy godmother granted the little boy’s wish and – zingo! -- he had a body! The little boy got excited and ran out of the house to play with the kids. While the little boy was crossing the street, a speeding car hit him and he died. Moral of the story: “Quit while you’re ahead.”

‘Somalia of Asia’
W
hoever would have thought that the Philippines would be the next Somalia? Indeed, a few years ago, that question would have been ignored and ridiculed. But today, there are disturbing signs that seem to manifest the unthinkable: The Philippines could become the Somalia of Asia! What happened? In my article, “Road to Perdition or Redemption” (PerryScope, November 9, 2007), I wrote: “Arroyo’s dismal failure and egregious disregard — and disrespect — for the people’s sentiments should be grounds to abrogate her mandate of government. In six and a half years of usurped authority, Arroyo is embroiled in a quagmire of corruption and deception. She implemented ineffective programs and projects that only fed the voracious appetite of kleptocrats in her government. Indeed, as several bishops and political leaders have stated, Arroyo no longer has the moral authority to lead the people. Under Arroyo’s leadership — and skullduggery — the country is on the road to perdition. It will no longer be the ‘Sick Man of Asia’ but will soon become the ‘Somalia of Asia’ where anarchy would be the order — or disorder — of the day and warlords reign supreme in their fiefdoms.” Private armies and paramilitary groups
Unfortunately for former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s successor, President Benigno Aquino III, the country hasn’t only changed since 2007 – it got worse! The Philippines is now closer to becoming the Somalia of Asia. As a matter of fact, some parts of the country are almost like Somalia. Most parts of Mindanao -- particularly Maguindanao – have the telltale signs of another Somalia in the making: overpopulation, poverty, corruption, and lawlessness where warlords rule and commit crime with impunity. The massacre of 58 unarmed civilians including 32 journalists last November 23, 2009 alleged to be committed by the powerful Ampatuan clan of Maguindanao has brought to the consciousness of the people that the government has been rendered inutile in maintaining peace and order. In the nine years of Arroyo’s presidency, military and paramilitary units killed more than a thousand people allegedly and several hundred more disappeared without a trace. These extrajudicial killings continue to this day. In the Maguindanao massacre, the Ampatuans allegedly used four armed groups: the clan’s private army, Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Units (CAFGUs), Civilian Volunteer Organizations (CVOs), and –
disturbingly – Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel stationed in Maguindanao. With that kind of firepower at their disposal, the Ampatuans ruled with absolute power over their political domain. Nobody would dare challenge them. And their political alliance with Arroyo provided them with immense influence as well as protection. Had there been no survivor from the massacre, and all the victims buried without a trace, the bloody incident wouldn’t have attracted international attention and could easily have been “swept under the carpet.” And the Ampatuans would continue on their bloody merry way. A few days after the heinous mass murder, Arroyo created the Independent Commission Against Private Armies (ICAPA) and ordered the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the PNP to dismantle all private armies in the entire country before the May 10, 2010 elections. But like most commissions that Arroyo created during her presidency, the ICAPA -- better known as the Zeñarosa Commission – missed its deadline. However, it completed its work and submitted its report to outgoing President Arroyo and incoming President Aquino on June 30, 2010. To date, Aquino is still reviewing the Zeñarosa report. However, he indicated that he would not dismantle the CAFGUs and CVOs (formed by the military during Cory
Aquino’s presidency). He said that his government would work toward professionalizing the paramilitary groups. The problem with Aquino’s proposal is that it would also professionalize those who are triggerhappy; thus, making them more dangerous and prone to commit more abuses. That would be tantamount to licensing armed goons to kill. Indeed, with 50,000 CAFGU members and 800,000 CVO members across the country, we are looking at humongous time bomb ready to explode. Population explosion Another factor that would put the Philippines into the category of “impoverished” countries like Somalia is runaway population growth. Dr. Malcolm Potts, a USbased demographer and health expert, said in a recent forum hosted by the Asia Society Philippine Foundation Incorporated in Metro Manila that “due to its ballooning population, there would be about 160 million Filipinos, from the estimated 94 million today, in the next 40 years which could pose a huge problem of how to feed, clothe, educate and house them.” Interestingly, he mentioned another “disturbing aspect” of the population problem: “About 600,000 babies were born in the past four months after President Aquino took over Malacañang on June 30” or 5,000 babies born every day. With the specter of population explosion, the congressional debate
December 5-20, 2010 on the controversial Reproductive Health bills -- which have been dormant in Congress for the past eight years due to strong opposition from the Catholic Church – might finally come to a vote and pass with the strong backing of Aquino. In my article, “Is it time for population control?” (PerryScope, October 5, 2010), I wrote: “In 1903 when the first census was taken, the population of the Philippines was 7,635,426. Thirty-six years later in 1939, the population more than doubled to 16,000,303. Twenty-nine years later in 1960, the population increased by 169 % to 27,087,685. Forty-seven years later in 2007, the population increased by a staggering 327 % to 88,574,614. This year, 2010, the population is estimated at 97,976,603, an increase of more than 11% in three years or 3.67 % per year. At this rate, the population would be 500 million in 50 years, 1.2 billion in 80 years, and 2.2 billion in 100 years!” Warlordism If the Aquino government took the wrong step in dealing with paramilitary groups, it could end up institutionalizing warlordism similar to what’s happening in Somalia where a central government is diminished to an impotent body and its military arm fractured and rendered useless. Is the Philippines on the road to becoming the “Somalia of Asia” and beyond redemption?
“Bandila” and Ces Drilon win at KBP Golden Dove Awards
Ces Drilon, Julius Babao, and Karen Davila keep viewers up with interactive “BANDILA”
A
BS-CBN’s multi-awarded news program “Bandila” won Best Newscast while anchor Ces Oreña Drilon took home the prestigious Ka Doroy Valencia Broadcaster of the Year trophy at the 19th KBP Golden Dove Awards last Thursday (Nov 25) in Tagaytay City, Philippines. “Bandila” and Drilon’s triumphs followed the successful debut of the program’s new format last November 22. With more and more viewers getting hooked to its fast-paced and interactive format, the new “Bandila” is all set to change the landscape of late night newscasts. Headlined by the triumvirate of acclaimed journalists Drilon, Julius Babao, and Karen Davila, the new “Bandila” not only offers comprehensive reports on the day’s biggest news but also allows viewers to immediately react on news reports. Drilon, Babao, and Davila can be seen during the newscast using their own tablet and laptop computers to read comments that viewers send in through social networking and micro-blogging sites. “Bandila” executive producer Paul Henson said this is ABS-CBN’s way to empower Filipinos to take part in issues that matter to them.
Henson added, just like the awardwinning “Bayan Mo, iPatrol Mo: Ako ang Simula” citizen journalism campaign, “Bandila” is a platform where ordinary citizens can be heard. The four-year old newscast is currently enjoying positive reviews online, with posters commending its “revolutionary,” “hip and informative” concept, as well as its powerhouse combination of anchors. Twitter user Jun Robles twitted last November 25 “I had a venti of Starbucks coffee last nyt to keep myself awake for Bandila. I wasnt disappointed. Ur format is revolutionary!” Itsmemyk, meanwhile, likened “Bandila” to another ABS-CBN program with cult following. He posted last November 24, “@ juLiusbabao @cesdrilon @Karen_ DaviLa Bandila is the “Showtime” of late night TV! dahil lahat nakaabang! It’s the latest fad, habit, hobby.” Even Filipinos in other countries are getting into the Bandila “fever.” Twitter user joven2181 said “Bandila is the breakfast of Vancouver. I like u expressing your opinions about each news. the best trio tandem in newscast kayo.”

Viewers also raved about the rapport of the three anchors. All experienced and award-winning, each of them gets to contribute some analysis and backgrounders on the issues from time to time. With its exciting new format and the energy and wisdom brought in by Drilon, Babao, and Davila, “Bandila” has veered away from the traditional late night newscast template that late night viewers have outgrown. Meanwhile, ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs went home victorious from the KBP Golden Dove Awards. Henry Omaga Diaz was honored as Best TV Newscaster, Rated K was named Best magazine Program, Sports Unlimited was awarded Best TV Sports Program, Harapan Vice Presidential Debate was judged Best Special Program and Salamat Dok was hailed Best TV Public Affairs Program. Take part in the newscast by sending your comments and reactions to the official Facebook and Twitter pages of “Bandila” and official accounts of the three anchors. Larry Vickar Shares Tips on Balancing Personal and Business
M
any of us see Larry Vickar present in the numerous Filipino parties and celebrations showing his support for our Filipino Community. It was a natural choice for the Manitoba Filipino Business Council to invite Larry to speak at our general meeting this past November 18th at CanadInns Polo Park. Larry, along with his wife Tova and numerous friends and team braved the first Winnipeg blizzard of 2010’s winter season to once again show his support to the Filipino community. The Manitoba Filipino Business Council’s mission and goals are to help businesses progress towards success, every member is there to better themselves and their business.
One of the many challenges of business owners is how to balance their personal and business life. How did Larry Vickar build a successful business 40 years in the automotive industry, own 3 dealerships, and manage to sit on non-profit boards such as the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba and the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation? Venice, the “floating city”
V
enice, a beautiful Italian city “floating” on the sea, is one of the most interesting and lovely places on the planet. For quite a long time its romantic charms remain and has reigned as the “Queen of the Adriatic”. Venice is the only city on earth that is built on an archipelago of 122 islands formed by 177 canals in a shallow lagoon and connected by 455 bridges. Wondering how the buildings are constructed in Venice? Well, they are sitting on top of closely-spaced

wood piles that don’t decay under water rather they become petrified and they last. The easiest and maybe the best way to travel to Venice from Rome is by train. The capital city of Rome is only about 3.5 hours away. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Venice is a city of striking palaces, beautiful churches and public buildings. Its immense waterway is the Grand Canal, considered as Venice’s main boulevard, which “divides and yet unites the city with
its sinuous path shaped like a liquid S and forms the principal artery” of the city leading to the heart of Venice, the Piazza San Marco (St. Mark;s Square) which is dominated by the Basilica San Marco, the Doge’s Palace and the Campanile (Clock Tower). Now considered as the city’s principal symbol, the Piazza San Marco used to be the centre of political and religious activities of the Venetian Republic. You could spend the whole day in the area and enjoy its sights and sounds. The square is filled with people, pigeons and music from morning until nighttime. Feeding the pigeons that flock to the square with grains of corn which you could purchase from the vendors is a popular activity among the tourists and locals alike. Do you know that St. Mark’s Square being the lowest point in Venice is quite often flooded during the “acqua alta” (high tide) when the water of the lagoon and the canals

surge up into the square or even after a heavy rain? So be prepared - you might end up wearing rubber boots instead of walking shoes! Worth a visit is the spectacular Basilica San Marco - the main cathedral church of Venice which is adjacent and connected to another famous building, the Doge’s Palace. With magnificent facade and orientallooking copulas, the Basilica has a cavernous interior gilded with Byzantine mosaic covering every inch of both the ceiling and the pavement illustrating the tales of St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice, as well as the scenes of the Old and New Testament. Four gilded horses adorn the upper tier of the cathedral.

The Doge’s Palace (also known as the Ducal Palace), used to be the residence of the early Venetian rulers known as “Doge” and now preserved as a museum, is in the form of a fortified castle and moat with four square towers and merlin walls. The palace is the largest civic building in the city. The Campanile (Clock Tower) is an imposing building with the Venetian winged-lion guarding the square. On top is a bell with two giant blackened bronze figures who strike the bell on the hour drawing the curiosity of the numerous visitors. We’ll end up our tour of Venice in the next issue.
