Kapanganakan Muli ng Pag-asa

A

Threads of Hope to make a child’s wish come true

A

by Maria Cristina Laureano

t ten days old, Briana Calley was flown out to Edmonton for open heart surgery. Shortly afterwards, she was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart disease preventing her body from getting oxygenated blood. Through a line of apparel and accessories called Threads of Hope, project founder Jackie Doming hopes to fundraise enough money to help send now six-year-old Calley and her family to Disney World, a wish the young girl requested through The Children's Wish Foundation. Doming is a public relations major in Creative Communications at Red River College, which is a program that prepares its students for careers in the communications industry. For a school project, she

decided to organize the Threads of Hope fundraiser to help raise money for Calley while spreading awareness for the wish-granting foundation. She started the project by selling hand-made leather bracelets, with over 200 units sold to date. Doming also released a line of graphic T-shirts last month, and has already sold over 100 units. Doming said creating this line has been something she’s wanted to do for years. “This project gave me the opportunity to push my creative boundaries while aligning myself with an organization that could benefit from the funds and awareness,” she said. The money from the bracelets and t-shirts are going to be combined with proceeds

from a charity concert that Doming is organizing called Urban Rhapsody. The concert will feature various hip-hop and R&B performers from across the city, including Western Canadian Music Award winner Flo, Tiffany Ponce and the Paranormal Panda Crew. The event will take place at 7:00 p.m. on February 3, 2013, at the West End Cultural Centre. Ultimately, Doming said her goal is to raise enough money to grant at least one wish for the charity, which costs approximately $10,000. “Nothing would be more gratifying than to see the smile on Briana's face . . . when she finds out we'll be able fulfill her wish,” said Doming. Currently, Doming has raised close to $3,000 and is hoping to get more buyers and sponsors on board. She is currently recruiting sponsors at various levels, and will be promoting the event across the city and through local media.

“The Children's Wish Foundation is an amazing organization dedicated to granting the wishes of children three to 17 diagnosed with a life-threatening illness . . . The work they do is

student at Red River College, has been a burn survivor most of her life, but only recently decided to go public about her accident. She is creating a website called After the Cocoon for a school project, a blog featuring photos and stories of burn survivors - including her own. “I was very discrete about it and only shared that information with a small circle of tight-knit friends and family. It used to be very difficult for me to talk about my burn injury, but now I talk openly about it so that I can help other people who are going through a tough time,” said Laureano. Her project began with research, conducting interviews and taking photographs of burn survivors for the website. She connected with participants through the Canadian Burn Survivors Community (CBSC) and Mamingwey Burn Survivors Society. Both organizations also provided financial support to Laureano, helping her travel to the CBSC national burn survivor conference in Calgary last summer. One of her goals is to spread information about burn survivors

that may not be well known, such as the different types of burns that exist. “Most people think of those injured in fires as burn survivors, but people can be burned through many different ways – chemical, electrical, gasoline, hot water, etc." Along with the website launch, Laureano is working on marketing After the Cocoon. She traveled to the World Burn Congress, an international burn survivors conference held in Milwaukee, and attended the Mamingwey conference to

Ultimately, she wants the awareness built by the project to encourage people to donate to burn support organizations. After the Cocoon is launching on February 9, 2013, to coincide with her 25th burn anniversary at the Fire Fighters Museum on 56 Maple St. Previews of the project can be viewed at afterthecocoon.com.

nuva is a carefully master-planned community set in a strategically-located 2.4 hectare property just a kilometer off the Sucat Interchange. It will house only 8 towers thereby preserving 80% of its open space for the general benefit of future residents. The 80% open space offers residents the recreation, fun and enjoyment not commonly found in other communities. A spacious clubhouse, a resort-type lazy river, numerous water features, jogging paths, bike trails, playgrounds in every corner, a yoga deck, and even a tree house only found in farms and provinces. Aside from the generous open space being offered, the 8 towers will be iconically presented in 4 tandem buildings offering an architectural advantage where not only aesthetic was considered but proper sun orientation as well. Each building will have a medium density space planning emphasizing privacy and exclusivity. As you go inside each unit, one cannot help but notice the unique squarishness of each unit which allows flexibility in space planning while taking into account the ventilation and natural illumination of the four (4) corners of each unit. Something most condominium units cannot offer.

Anuva will truly be a haven for young families as children can freely roam and enjoy the amenities as parents feel the security the project offers. 24 hour security, CCTV cameras, and the roads that was deliberately placed in the perimeter of the project and not between buildings and amenities as what other project offers. Children of Anuva therefore do not cross roads just to enjoy the amenities.

Journey & Its Long Established Musical Vision (Pineda Is Simply Completing Again the Band's Original Sonic Vision)

I

f your interest includes Rock music history, then you should have known or heard by now the many criticisms that Journey has been getting for having gotten yet a new singer for the band, and this time, someone whose vocal quality is very closely similar with the band’s trademark vocalist, Steve Perry. I really don't mind at all that Perry is not the vocalist of Journey anymore and that Pineda’s voice sounded very

much like Perry’s. The fact is, both the vocal styles of Perry and Pineda were simply meeting the vocal requirement that Journey's sound needed based on original member Neil Schon's musical vision. As original member Neil Schon explained in 2009 during the band’s interview on Oprah Show, “What I was looking for was the ‘legacy’ sound—it’s the tenor voice with soul and emotion….” Therefore, he simply

found in Pineda what he found in Perry. On Steve Perry No doubt that among the number of vocalists that fronted Journey, Steve Perry left a big mark on the band's history— despite the fact that he joined the band already in its fourth album—primarily because Perry contributed the distinct voice that befitted the music of Journey—as well as he cowrote and "voiced" some of Journey's classic hit singles such as "Wheel in the Sky," "Don't Stop Believin'," and "Open Arms." I know for a fact too that many music fans and journalists, to this day, regard Journey without Perry as not Journey at all. I don't blame them. These observers are the typical hits-only listeners. But, what could Journey do but to move on? Perry was the one who quit the band in the first place. On Neil Schon and Jonathan Cain While I regard Perry's voice as very important in the music

of Journey for a period of time when he was with the group, I knew very well that the main songwriters in Journey were and remain to be original member Neil Schon and longtime member Jonathan Cain. Being a musician myself, I give significance to that detail. Many music fans see bands only from a distance— they are usually smitten only by the lead vocalists, failing to pay tribute to the real brains of a group—the songwriters. Yes, Perry was a songwriter too and had contributed significantly to the group's music, but his absence from the group did not deter Schon and Cain from continuing to write. They simply moved on and left off where they started in the first place. On Arnel Pineda Obviously because Pineda is a fellow Filipino, I automatically have pride in his having been chosen to sing for the band. In fairness with him, his voice is powerful if not unique, very reminiscent of Perry's. This

december 5-20, 2012

should be unsurprising. It's that kind of voice that made him the chosen one; and he was able to prove this properly with Journey's first album with him—the doubledisc 13th studio album, in which disc 2 consists of re-recordings of Journey’s classic songs; and this time, with Pineda's vocals. I've been comparing his renditions with those of Perry's and if I don't really pay attention, I couldn't notice the difference. And again, that's basically the point— Pineda's addition simply retained the trademark Journey’s “legacy sound,” so he's a right piece to the whole puzzle of Journey's music. On Pineda's Originality Originality of Pineda's vocal style is irrelevant. He is simply filling in the vocal position that Journey's established music needed. If he had a different vocal style, then he would have obviously not gotten the part after all. And if Schon wanted a different style, then he might have formed a new band anyway. continuation on page 19

Journey... rrom page 18

I'm not saying that Pineda is better than Perry nor is he better than the other Journey vocalists— it's simply that Pineda's voice met the vocal requirement that Journey music (through Schon's musical vision) needed...the same way Perry met that same requirement when he joined the band in the 1970s. A good thing about Schon and Cain—they gave Pineda a chance to contribute to the songwriting process. They did not use Pineda only for his voice. In the latest, 14th album, two songs credited Pineda as a cosongwriter—"She's a Mystery" and "To Whom It May Concern." November 2012 Concert at MTS Centre, in Winnipeg We enjoyed the concert of Journey at MTS Centre in Downtown Winnipeg last November. Pineda did a great job in fronting the band and engaging the audience to participate with the band’s 19-piece setlist of old and new works—from the classics “Faithfully,” “Open Arms,” and “Don't Stop Believin’” to the new ones, “Never Walk Away,” “City of Hope,” and “Resonate.” The only downside of the show was Pineda’s voice’s sounding a bit tired and strained already, particularly in the band's highnote songs. Albeit still impressive, Pineda was obviously not in his best form. That should be unsurprising anyway, considering

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

that the gig was already the 44th show of the almost 80-date international tour that began on July 29, 2012, in Washington, USA; and will end on May 29, 2013, in Wembley, UK. Add to that, he is admittedly busy with energy-draining activities when not on tour with Journey, such as managing the club he put up back home, in the Philippines, and regularly hosting and singing on a TV noontime variety show. The technical musicianship of Journey's instrumentalists— Neil Schon (lead guitar, vocals), Jonathan Cain (rhythm guitar, keyboards, piano, vocals), Ross Valory (bass, vocals), and Deen Castronovo (drums, vocals) were highlighted during the concert, which is usual for Progressive Rock bands. Overall, Journey delivered a well-performed and tightly-played set. By the sound of their cheers and sing-alongs, the majority of the audience undoubtedly left the venue after the show very much contented. Journey simply treated the concertgoers to their long-established brand of soulful, melodious, and progressive Pop Rock music. Final Note Journey's ProgressiveRock-styled music has long been established. It naturally follows a trademark sound of progressive music with that “tenor voice with soul and emotion.” Pineda is simply fulfilling or meeting the vocal requirement of Journey’s music. To get someone whose

voice is different from Journey’s “legacy sound” is what should be surprising. Journey is a Progressive/Pop Rock–styled U.S. band that was formed in the 1970s, peaked in the 1980s, and revitalized in this current decade especially with the addition of what many regard as a soulful, down-to-earth, and charismatic vocalist such as Arnel Pineda. It has 14 studio albums to its credit: Journey (1975), Look into the Future (1976), Next (1977), Infinity (1978), Evolution (1979), Departure (1980), Escape (1981), Frontiers (1983), Raised on Radio (1986), Trial by Fire (1996), Arrival (2001), Generations (2005), Revelation (2008), and Eclipse (2011).

Willie Revillame’s Party-List Movie lovers crave for restoration of Filipino film classics fails to impress Comelec

T

he party-list group associated with TV host Willie Revillame was among the 32 groups recently disqualified by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for the 2013 nationwide polls. Comelec chairman Sixto Brillantes said that Revillame and the other disqualified groups did not file a motion for reconsideration concerning an earlier decision of separate divisions that denied the accreditation of the said groups. A resolution from Comelec’s first division led by Commissioner Rene Sarmiento stated that the “I Wil Serve partylist,” actually intends to represent Revillame’s WILFOUNDATION and not the urban poor, elderly and professionals. The resolution added that the party-list do not sufficiently demonstrate the party-list’s knowledge about the needs of each and every sector of the urban poor, elderly, women and professionals.

The Comelec also said that the nominees of the party-list do not belong to the sectors it claims to represent and won’t be able to make useful contributions to appropriate legislation due to their lack of concrete knowledge regarding the actual needs, concerns and sentiments of the said sectors.

A

new generation of film lovers has expressed their desire to be able watch Filipino iconic movies now that the Nora Aunor starrer “Himala” has been restored and will be reshown this December. Among the local masterpieces suggested for restoration and reshowing include the first partly color film in the history of the local movie industry “Ibong Adarna,” and the action film, “Tatlong Hari,” which was an early movie directed by Fernando

Poe Jr. under his directorial name D’ Lanor: Also on the top of the requested list for restoration is the action-drama “Geron Busabos, Ang Batang Quiapo,” which was directed by Cesar “Chat” Gallardo and starred the young Joseph Estrada; Manuel Conde’s “Juan Tamad Goes to Congress,” which is conceded the best satirical film ever made; and Eddie Romero’s “Kamakalawa.” Other spectacular movies that the present crop of movie

Five big 2012 UFC fights that never happened

T

his year has to go down as one of the worst years for the UFC in terms of injuries and how they affected big fights on major shows. Throughout 2012, UFC brass was constantly shuffling around cards to accommodate injured competitors. Injuries happen. From last minute replacements giving fighters their octagon debut to mixing up weight divisions using catch weight bouts, Zuffa officials did what they could to salvage what seems to be every fight card this year. However, there was one event that just could not be saved and for the first time ever, the UFC cancelled an entire card. What sets 2012 apart from other years is the number of main events that had to be altered. It’s one thing to replace a fighter on the undercard, but when the comain and main events have to be changed, it presents a new set of headaches. From marketing the fight, to convincing main event fighters to take a short notice fight. Here are five marquee fights that were supposed to happen in 2012, yet never did due to injury. 5) Uriah Faber vs Dominick Cruz - They were coaches on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter on FX. The only season where every fight was live. The

season was to end with a rubber match between Faber and Cruz for the UFC Bantam Weight championship. A knee injury to champion Cruz ended that idea and Faber lost via decision to Renan Bararo for the interim bantam weight championship. 4) Shane Carwin vs Roy Nelson - These are the current coaches for The Ultimate Fighter and for the second season in a row, a coach injures his knee. Shane Carwin is out, Matt Mitrione is in and will face Roy Nelson in the main event at the Ultimate Fighter season finale on December 15th. 3) Frankie Edgar vs Jose Aldo - Originally, Aldo was to defend his featherweight championship against Eric Koch in Calgary. Koch got injured, and Edgar, after losing a close decision to lightweight champ, Ben Henderson, agreed to drop down in weight and take on Aldo. A fight that many wanted to see. But as soon as we were about to get it, Aldo injures his foot in a motorcycle accident. 2) Georges St-Pierre vs Nick Diaz - Nick Diaz will probably go down as the only fighter to really get under the skin of long time UFC welterweight

Filipino Journal 27

champion, Georges St-Pierre. But a devastating knee injury put GSP on the shelf for 19 months. Diaz then faced Carlos Condit for the interim championship and lost. Recently, GSP made his comeback, dominating Condit, save for an iffy moment in the third round, to be the undisputed champion. He now ponders a super fight against middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, or a match up against number one welterweight contender, Johnny Hendricks. 1) Jon Jones vs Dan Henderson - Dan Henderson stood as the last test before champion Jon Jones clears out the UFC’s light heavyweight division. A knee injury to Henderson with eight days until UFC 151, left match makers scrambling. The only fighter willing to step up on short notice was middleweight Chael Sonnen. Jones, however, turned down the fight deeming he did not have enough time to prepare. This lead to Zuffa scrapping the entire event. Now Jones and Sonnen are filming the latest season of the Ultimate Fighter to air in 2013 and hopefully both will be injury-free by the time they fight in April. I can only hope that 2013 will have fewer injuries. We never see major boxing events modified or canceled and I think a big key to that is how their fight camps are designed. Camps are made to compliment the individual fighter. Others are brought in with strengths they need to specifically work on. Too often in MMA, fighters are training in super teams. Maybe an overzealous team mate takes thing too far or a coach over trains their fighter. Whatever the case is, something has to be done to curb the injuries. It’s better for the fighters and the business of fighting.

The Pulse of the Filipino Community Since 1987

Horoscope The day is easy regarding personal relationships. There is nothing wrong with sparing someone’s feelings and as long as the end result is the same and they know what they need to know, then you have done something wonderful. Things are good at work front. Status and security goals need rethinking now, to take advantage of changing circumstances.

Tuning out the world on a day like today will be a challenge. You operate best when there is plenty of action to keep your active mind and body interested. Get organized and hatch a plan that will maximize both your effort and energy. You don’t want to be busy, but get nothing accomplished.

The time is right for you to make a career move. Your talents are developed well enough for you to take the next step towards your goals. Luckily, with all the new stimulation in your day today, you will enjoy an ‘out with the old and in with the new’ dynamic that will leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated for the future.

You’ve been feeling so frazzled about meeting all your goals lately that you haven’t stopped to notice that you’re standing on the top of a big success! You need to have willingness for making adjustments. You’ll experience a lot of satisfaction, and it is going to feel awfully good to you! Today, compromise is the key word for you.

You’re in the right place in your life right now, and a silly coincidence will remind you of that fact later today. A choice you thought you’d regret seems to have been one of the best things you’ve ever done. Periodically throughout this time period you get the urge to stir things up and inject fresh, new stimulation into your life.

You will find it a flexible day in profession. You have to make a decision today about keeping your word or changing plans to accommodate a new prospect. Hold to your convictions even though you think that you may be missing out on something. It will turn out better than you imagined. Be honest about what you did -- and about the fact that it was pretty awesome!

A proposition may sound great at first, but as with all other decisions in life it is wise to hear all the details and analyze them before you agree to anything. Take your time and think through all the potential consequences before you make an agreement. You may find yourself able to implement your ideas and put them into practice.

This day is likely to inspire you to do something totally different. You will be carried away by your desires. This is a time to let this happen and enjoy the scenery. If things seem to be running smoothly around you, they are, so let them. In order to make a sound decision you need to have all the facts and there is really only one way to go about obtaining them.

Enjoy the day as you will be able to finally express your latent abilities. The day will offer support to all your efforts; however, it could be slightly tough at work front. Collect your thoughts and build a message that will open the doors of communication and hopefully lead to an agreeable solution.

The day is good to make efforts and find success. Right now you have to focus on having the necessary difficult conversations, dealing with a few tight deadlines and making a controversial decision. Give yourself a break and just laugh it off as no one else will place more importance on the mistakes than you will.

All the people you’re with today are in flexible and positive moods as well, so the good times are there to be had! Put your faith in the universe, Gemini, and trust that is something is meant to happen it will. You need to re-examine your goals. Remember, if your aim is nothing, then you can’t miss.

PAHALANG

There would be benefits from career. It is a good time to push personal and business affairs, and take advantage of new opportunities for future expansion. You may to get a chance to travel or experience pleasurable contacts from those living in distant cities. Personal life tends to be good.

The luxurious 2012 Porsche Panamera S Hybrid

W

hoa, a Porsche! A little over a year ago, I took a Ford Mustang Convertible from one end of the province to the other. That was fun. Earlier this year, I explored the fine provincial parks of Manitoba in a Mercedez-Benz C63 AMG. That was fun too! What’s it like driving fun cars? There are several things that I’ve noticed while driving fun cars, especially luxury sports cars. People give you approval nods while stopped at red lights.

Random strangers, mostly guys give you the thumbs up. Even more random strangers approach you in the parking lot and ask how much the car is worth, or how fast the car goes or how much horsepower is under the hood. Where do I even begin to talk about this car? It’s a Porsche! It’s a one-hundred and twenty seven thousand dollar luxury hybrid super car. To emphasize the price of the car, just pretend that the last line is in upper case! That’s right,

if you happen to have a $127,395 sitting in your bank account. If you’re looking for a practical and environmentally friendly family vehicle, the Panamera S Hybrid is for you. Just make sure to have a set of high performance winter tires ready for our Manitoba winters. Going back to the random strangers, and answering “How much?”, the next question most people are curious about is “How fast?” For the select few, showing my friends “how fast” 0-100km/ hr in roughly 6 seconds is a lot more entertaining and enjoyable than simply telling them. I usually give them a couple seconds to catch their breath before I tell them what’s under the hood. The Porsche Panamera S Hybrid has a supercharged V6 engine with 333hp and a 47hp electric engine, to give a combined power output of 380hp in an 8-speed automatic transmission. It’s speedy, luxurious and it definitely turns heads. I wasn’t

surprised as I drove through a school zone and heard one kid on the sidewalk scream, “Wow, that’s an awesome car!” I’m sure his father would have said the same thing in the same exact fashion. It’s a Porsche! Speaking of kids, I did mention that the Panamera could be the ultimate family car. Kids would definitely enjoy the roominess in the back of the Panamera. Actually, any adult would enjoy the roominess provided by this 4-door sports sedan. Other fun features that I really need to mention are the huge 19” wheels, paddle shifters, and adaptive air suspension system. Basically, you can raise and lower the vehicle, tighten the suspension to adjust to specific driving conditions. The interior styling of the Panamera is elegant and beautifully designed. The centre stack, entertainment, NAV displays are gorgeous. It’s a Porsche!

december 5-20, 2012

It’s also a hybrid Porsche! In full electric mode, I was able to travel up to 2.5kms before the gas engine kicked in. That’s not that far but then again, this isn’t a Prius. If you can afford a $127,000 vehicle, I’m quite confident you can also afford the premium fuel to fill up the Panamera S Hybrid. Everything about the Panamera’s look and feel are refined, elegant and luxurious. As a photographer, I think I may have gone overboard on the countless photo shoots during the week long review period. One of the photo shoots involved was an evening rig-shot at the James Richardson International Airport at midnight on the upper departure ramp. Sponsored to Sponsor Vicky Wong proves that positive change is possible when you reflect on your past By Adriana Ermter / Photography by Andrew Goodwin

“I’ve lived in Mississauga, Ontario, with my wonderful husband and my two children— who are ages 12 and 15—for the past 25 years,” says Vicky Wong, pride filling her voice. “And, I manage my own business.” While her company helps Canadians secure employment, she also sponsors two elementary school children in her hometown in the Philippines. Vicky’s primary goal is “to work hand in hand with World Vision to help eradicate poverty.” A dream that is, clearly, a reflection of her childhood. By the time Vicky was in Grade 1, she was one of seven siblings—all under the age of 16. Her friends called her Victorina, her neighbours tossed her a few pesos when she helped with their laundry and her family squished

into their one-bedroom apartment each night at bedtime. Her dad, a single parent, clocked eight hours a day, six days a week as a bin loader in San Pablo City, Laguna. His paycheque covered the family’s food and rent. Period. “Living without a mother was tough,” admits Vicky. To provide breathing room, her eldest siblings moved to a relative’s house in Manila, while another shuffled between the family apartment and an aunt’s house located just down the street. Vicky, however, took matters into her own, seven-yearold hands. “One day, a group of people were walking along our street, telling everyone about World Vision. They asked me if I wanted to be sponsored,” says Vicky, who acknowledges that 40 years ago, sponsorship’s approach was very

informal. “I answered yes, even though I hadn’t asked my father for permission.” The monthly donations of rice and clothing, and an education paid off. Vicky received her high school diploma and graduated from college with a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education. “World Vision helped my sisters and me have a quality life in spite of hardship,” affirms Vicky. While she never met her sponsor, Mildred Bombio, Vicky says, “Without her support and sponsorship, I do not know where I would be today.” As for her future, Vicky hopes to become a World Vision spokesperson, “to show potential sponsors how sponsoring a child can change their life forever,” she says. “It changed mine.” First published in Childview magazine, Fall 2012 issue

Once you have cleaned under the eyes, remove the tape and apply the Pore Perfect Primer all over the face to smooth out the skin and prolong the wear of your foundation. Once you have finished applying your foundation and powdering the face you can go and add a few coats of Lush Black Mascara, and there you have a Smokey Cat Eye that you can wear for the holiday season.
