Lateral movements will confuse Clottey

Court begins sessions for Andal’s transfer martial law in Maguindanao following the arrest of Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr., prime suspect in the massacre of 57 people, including 30 journalists, in Maguindanao last Nov. 23.

Meanwhile, at least 30 witnesses for the prosecution from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) will give testimonies against Ampatuan Jr., said lawyer Ricardo Diaz, chief of the NBI’s Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) and current spokesperson for the Maguindanao massacre.

ANILA, Philippines - The Ampatuan clan’s petition to prevent transfer of their detention to Metro Manila will be heard this morning in Camp Crame as ordered by Judge Vivencio Baclig of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 77.

The Ampatuans, implicated in a rebellion case, have filed a petition to defer their custodial transfer to Metro Manila until a real reason or cause of such transfer is established.

But I could not say with utmost certainty that they are linked with the MILF. This is just an intelligence report,” said Diaz.

Australia targets P7-million for RP ‘rights’ program

T

he Australian government has targeted P7 million to the Philippines to boost its effort in promoting human rights as well in addressing human rights issues, particularly in strife-torn southern Philippines.

Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Rod Smith expressed his government’s continued assistance to Manila to intensify human rights promotion and protection in the country.

Canberra, a state party to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, has been pushing for the consistent and comprehensive implementation of the declaration since 1950.

“The murder of civilians and journalists in Maguindanao late last year has heightened the focus on human rights issues in the Philippines. Australia will support initiatives that further promote and rebuild human rights awareness and protection in the country,” Smith said in a statement.

Canberra’s assistance will channeled for the establishment of the paralegal committees that would monitor human rights violations during armed conflict and for the implementation of human-rights related projects in the South.

The embassy said the project seeks for the creation of paralegal

committees that are expected to provide human rights education and paralegal training that would help people living in conflict-stricken areas understand their basic rights as well as to boost the capacity of the authorities to conduct investigation and document human rights violations.

Apart from the establishment of the paralegal committees, the Australian government will also fund various projects through the Karapatan sa Malikhaing Paraan (KaSaMa), a multi-donor initiative that provides funding to civil society organizations to implement innovative human rights projects.

‘Short’ applicants now welcome in RP military Forget about the height. What the military wants now are small but terrible new soldiers.

rig. Gen. Francisco Cruz, chief of the Armed Forces on the Philippines Civil Relations Service (AFP-CRS), said that they have lowered the height requirement to 5’ from 5’4” (males) and 5’2” (females) to “increase the level of quality of new batches of soldiers.”

He said that they also wanted to “widen its choices” not only to recruits with “muscle power” but also to those with “brain force.”

“The lowering of the height requirement for both genders does not mean that the AFP is also lowering its standards in general. By opening opportunity to those who are vertically challenged but equally skilled and competent, we will be increasing the pool of candidates available,” Cruz said. “Shorter trainees, however, would still be exposed to the same training and fundamental military rules given to taller recruits,” he added.

He likewise said that the decision to accept shorter applicants in military boot camps is part of the AFP’s efforts to focus not just on battle and “brute force,” but also on the government’s peace and development programs.

“Height is no longer a strategic requirement for the military as there could be many ‘shorter’ Filipinos with the same amount of commitment and patriotism,” he said.

The military recruits about 6,000 applicants per year. Of this number, 5 to 6 percent are officers while the rest are enlisted personnel.

May You Pass Me That ‘Thingy’?

igurado ako na marami kang kakilala na mahilig gamitin ang salitang “thingy.” Baka nga isa ka rin sa mga ito. Sa eskwela ko e andaming “thingy users.” Kahit sa mga handaan na dinadaluhan namin ng aking pamilya e bihira na hindi ko marinig ’yan. Ilang beses ko na rin namang nagamit ang salitang iyan, pero mula nang mapagsabihan ako ni Tito George na hanggang maaari e wag kong gamitin ang salitang iyan—’buti naman—nawala na ang “thingy” sa aking everyday vocabulary. Ano nga ba ang ibig sabihin ng thingy?

Ayon sa Wikipedia (isa sa mga paborito kong Website references), “thingy is a slang word used to refer to objects whose names are either temporarily forgotten, irrelevant, or unknown.”

Sabi ni Tito George, wala namang masama sa paggamit nito paminsan-minsan, pero kapag ito ay iyong nakasanayan, nagiging negatibo ang epekto nito sa iyong kaalaman.

Bakit naman?

Ani Tito George, kapag ginamit mo ang thingy na ipantawag sa isang bagay, e nangangahulugan lang na hindi mo alam ang tamang pangalan nito. Bakit hindi mo alam? ALGARY, AB - Just as the careful approach followed by Canada s banking system helped it escape the global financial meltdown, the balance in Manitoba s economy allowed it to avoid the recession contagion. A new Canada West Foundation report examines what made Manitoba a contender to being the only province in Canada to post growth in 2009.

The report, Avoiding Recession Contagion Manitoba Economic Profile and Forecast by Jacques Marcil, takes an in-depth look at Manitoba’s economy, scanning everything from manufacturing to infrastructure investment. It concluded that, at this point, even if Manitoba s economy barely grew in 2009 and will not lead Canada in 2010, other provinces in the West would love to be in Manitoba s situation.

‘The Filipino is Worth Getting Rich For’

R

ecently, Sen. Joker Arroyo compared the situation faced by his friend Sen. Manuel “Titanic Manny” Villar to what the martyred Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. faced during the martial law era. No kidding! Let’s see. Ninoy said, “The Filipino is worth dying for,” and he did. Titanic Manny can say, “The Filipino is worth getting rich for.” He is now filthy rich… and getting richer every minute of the day.

Indeed, there is a comparison.

I don’t blame Ninoy’s son, presidential wannabe Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, for telling Joker, “Don’t compare Senator Manuel ‘Manny’ Villar’s situation to what my father faced under the martial law government of the late President Ferdinand Marcos.” Well, what do you expect to hear from a joker? Word of wisdom? Nah! Noynoy’s spokesperson piggybacked, “There is simply no comparison; Ninoy is a hero. Villar is nothing but a coward.” Touché.

This reminds me when presidential wannabe Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro was compared to the late President Manuel L. Quezon by his handlers. Let’s see how they compare. The fiery Quezon once said, “My loyalty to my party ends where my loyalty to my country begins.” Well, Gibo left his Uncle Danding’s party, the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), to join President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s party. Gibo should use this line as his battle cry: “My loyalty to NPC ends where my loyalty to Gloria begins.”

That should rally all of Gloria’s boys behind him.

But Gloria has a new man now -- Titanic Manny Villar. Columnist Lito Banayo said that Villar is Gloria’s “secret candidate.” Another columnist suggested that if Titanic Manny is elected president, he should change his last name to “Villarroyo.”

He’d be the first “Arroyo tuta” (Arroyo lapdog) to become president of the Philippines. Woof woof.

With Gloria becoming the next Speaker of the House of Representatives and Justice Renato Corona appointed by Gloria as the

next Chief Justice, the three branches of government could be under the “House of Arroyo” -- President Manny Villarroyo, Senate President Joker Arroyo, Speaker Gloria Arroyo, and Chief Justice Renato Coronarroyo. Yup, 2010 is going to be the “Year of the Tuta.”

Meanwhile, a moro-moro war has been going in the Senate between Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and Titanic Manny over the Senate investigation on the “double insertion” corruption scandal implicating Titanic Manny.

But Titanic Manny is waging the war by remote control using his four lapdogs… err, allies. He refused to face his accusers. This led Enrile and Sen. Jamby Madrigal to call him, “Coward!” Ugh! That hurts.

Jamby also called Titanic Manny’s allies (Senators Nene Pimentel, Miriam Defensor-Santiago, Alan Cayetano, and Joker Arroyo), “Villar’s Express Choo-choo train.”

Sounds like the popular 50’s song, “Choo choo train, chugging down the track, Gotta travel on, never coming back. Ooh! Got a one way ticket to the blues…” Yup, the “double insertion” corruption scandal could be Titanic Manny’s “one way ticket to the blues.”

And to the blues Titanic Manny will go if what Enrile has reportedly said would happen, “If his (Villar’s) case is brought to a court of law, he will be jailed. We have evidence and based on the evidence, it says (Villar is) guilty.” Now, that’s what I call, “hardball politics,” and Enrile is very good at it.

The moro-moro got so hot that Enrile’s majority bloc declared a ceasefire. The minority bloc wasn’t too happy. Joker Arroyo told the media, “We are ready for interpellation, we are ready for debate, we are ready for the vote since yesterday.” Now, who’s coward? The other day, Enrile dropped a bombshell when he claimed that Titanic Manny tried to bribe him in exchange for a “favorable decision on the chamber’s investigation of the controversy surrounding the C-5 road extension project.” What? Another bribery case? The last time the Senate investigated a bribery case involving prez Gloria and hubby Mike Arroyo, the senators were taken for a dizzying merry-go-round ride for several weeks. Nothing happened. Yup, what Lola wants, Lola gets.

Self-proclaimed international lawyer and perennial candidate Ely “Spike Boy” Pamatong is back at what he does best -- making trouble. This time he was jailed for direct contempt for calling Comelec commissioners, “thieves”! He accused the commissioners of accepting P5 million each from Vetellano Acosta who is running for president under the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan, Marcos’ old party. Comelec reconsidered Acosta’s candidacy and allowed him to run while they disallowed Pamatong. Pamatong should know by now that BS walks and money talks.

Yup, no money, no honey.

Snow Clearing Policy (Part 2) SECTION B:

Use of Salt on the Streets The populace of Winnipeg is largely dependent on being mobile all year round, either by automobile, truck or bus. As a result, it is critical that the street network and transportation system be functioning and safe. The City endeavors to provide an adequate level of service and, pending proper weather conditions, the application of 100% salt to city streets satisfies the following objectives: 1. Melting freshly fallen snow on arteries that are heavily traveled.

2. Preventing the formation of ice on the roadway surface due to freezing rain, fog, traces of snow, or frost formations such as on bridge decks.

3. Removing layers of snow and ice that remain on the pavement after the plowing operation is carried out.

4. Improving tire traction and braking qualities of the pavement.

Priority I Streets The Public

Department’s policy for the application of salt on Priority I streets is defined by past practice, namely that: (a) Salt is effective for the melting and removal of ice and snow accumulations on the pavement only when ambient (surrounding) temperatures are above approximately 7°C, depending on pavement temperatures, the radiant heat of the sun, wind conditions, traffic speed and volume. Because of this temperature limitation, salt is generally used for that part of the winter prior to the middle of December and subsequent to the middle of February. (b) Salt is applied in short burst applications called “spotting” on signalized intersections, controlled intersections, bridge decks, underpasses, railway crossings and pedestrian cross¬ings, to provide satisfactory tire traction quickly under heavy traffic conditions by melting the snow and ice accumulating on pavements. This method of application is particularly useful Works when snow or freezing rain

accumulates just prior to rush hours. (c) Salt can also be applied continuously along the Regional street system to melt freshly fallen snow. Depending on the weather conditions prior to the snowfall, a single application will melt three to six (3 to 6) centimetres of fresh snow. Should the snowfall continue, a second application may be required to melt the additional snow. This procedure is currently being instead of the alternative of plowing the fresh snow from the street followed by a salt “spotting” application for two reasons: 1) Bare pavement is restored quickly providing needed tire traction often in a time frame where plowing is not a viable alternative (e.g. to expedite rush hour traffic), and 2) the salting of Priority I streets on a continuous basis must be authorized by the Director of the Public Works Department or his designate. (d) Salt is applied at an application rate of 120 kg per lane kilometer.

Priority II Streets The use of salt on Priority II streets has not been well-defined up until now. It has been used on a few higher volume streets routinely and on other streets on occasion. There is greater use in extreme conditions such as a severe freezing rain.

In view of the existing level of environmental concern with respect to the use of salt, it is recommended that the application

of 100% salt not be used on Priority II streets other than under extreme conditions equivalent to that caused by freezing rain.

The salting of Priority II streets must be authorized by the Director of the Public Works Department, or his designate.

Priority III Streets As previously indicated, the existing Policy for Snow Clearing and Ice Control states that Priority III streets shall be maintained to a compacted snow surface.

Therefore, it is recommended that salt shall not be used on Priority III streets.

Allen’s concert would highlight popular songs from

his first major-record album that include “No Boundaries” and “Heartless.”

I know that Jabbawockeez and Boyce Avenue will add something special. So I’m really excited,” Allen said.

Allen will be performing at SM Mall of Cebu City and at the McKinley Hills concert grounds in Taguig City.

ohn Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo, one of the hottest love teams in Philippine showbiz, have promised moviegoers that they would witness new facets in their acting performances in their reunion movie I Miss You Like Crazy.

Cruz, who did One More Chance with Alonzo three years ago, said that it would be their first time to do more flawed characters.

“Actually ’yong characters ay daring, not in a sense na provocatively daring but daring as in flawed characters. First time naming magpo-portray ng ganitong characters,” Cruz said.

Cruz said that movie will tackle the issue of infidelity.

“It’s very different sa ibang characters na nagawa na namin,”

Alonzo said. “The characters, gaya ng sinabi ni John Lloyd, ay flawed. Marami ang makaka-relate kasi very human, dito pinapakita yong pagkakamali at kung paano [tinatama] ang pagkakamali.”

To add a special element in the movie, they will be flying to Malaysia on or before February 14, Valentine’s Day, to shoot some of the important scenes of the film.

“We will be in Malaysia para sa remaining scenes ng aming pelikula,” Cruz said.

A post-Valentine offering of Star Cinema, I Miss You Like Crazy tells the story of right love at the wrong time. Directed

Child star Zaijan Jaranillo stars in another movie with Piolo Pascual

hild star Zaijan Jaranillo, known also as Santino, is set to do a movie with actor Piolo Pascual after the conclusion of the successful teleserye May Bukas Pa. “Malapit na po ang simula.

Siguro mag-ama,” said an excited Jaranillo, who gained popularity for his role in ABS-CBN’s most popular teleserye to date.

Pascual said he is looking forward to working with Jaranilla.

He said in an interview that the movie project had to wait because of the popularity of the TV series.

“Laging nae-extend ang May Bukas Pa, so hintay lang kami pero kung anuman ang mauna, soap or movie, I will surely start anytime soon,” he said.

Jaranilla is thankful to millions of his fans who supported the teleserye. He said that the show, which ran for 52 weeks, has greatly improved his family’s life.

“Dahil dito, nakalipat na kami ng bahay at nakabili rin ako ng maraming laruan,” said Jaranilla.

Before starring in May Bukas Pa, Jaranilla appeared in several TV ads. He also starred in TV shows such as Tiny Tony and Going Bulilit.

His costars Tonton Gutierrez and Ryan Agoncillo described him as talented and playful offcamera.

“He’s a great kid and a good actor. Kung ano ang natatamasa niya ngayon, he derves it,” said Gutierrez. “’Pag off camera, maloko siya just any other kid,” said Agoncillo. “Pero pag nag-roll na [ang camera] at siya na si Santino…lumalabas na ang kanyang galing sa pag-arte.”

Gretchen Barretto is excited about Bea Alonzo’s playing her sister in a new teleserye

G

retchen Barretto revealed her excitement about working with Bea Alonzo in a teleserye in which they would play sisters. “I wilafashion model.

Magaganda ‘yung eksena kasi meron kaming fashion shows,” said Gretchen. Taping for the said series is slated to start in March.

Gretchen and sister Claudine were supposed to star together in this project, but Claudine’s role went to Bea after the former transferred to another network. Gretchen revealed that she has not yet discussed this development with Claudine, given that it is a sensitive issue. Although she felt sad that she would not be working with her sister anymore, Gretchen said that life has to go on, assuring people that she would give her all to this teleserye.

Gretchen said that she has met Bea a couple of times before, but

this would be the first time they would be working together.

“I’ve been watching Bea’s movies and guestings, so I’m so challenged kasi ang galing-galing ni Bea; sana ganun din ako umiyak,” she said.

Gretchen shared how impressed she is with how Bea could manage to look beautiful d e s p i t e scenes in which she had to cry.

She is looking f o r w a r d to doing workshops

with Bea, and eventually become her friend.

Also in the series is Derek Ramsay who will play Gretchen’s leading man.

The two previously worked together on a music video. “I really requested to work with Derek,” Gretchen admitted. “I like the way he looks [and] ’yung acting niya. And after all, siya ’yung isa sa mga pinakasikat ngayon?

Siyempre hiningi ko na ’yung one of the best.”

To prove how serious she is about this project, Gretchen said that she will set aside other commitments, such as movies and music albums to focus on this teleserye.

Pacquiao puts Krista Ranillo issue to rest Just as Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao couldn’t be knocked down, the issue linking him to actress Krista Ranillo just wouldn’t leave him. One can only imagine how stressful this could be to Pacquiao’s family.

New gossips started to circulate when Pacquiao left for the US on January 17 and Krista followed six days later. What may have been sheer coincidence threatened to shake Pacquiao’s career once again.

On the other hand, Ranillo told the media at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport that she was headed for Los Angeles to visit a sick sibling.

Coincidentally, Pacquiao was also in Los Angeles to train for his March 13 fight with Joshua Clottey.

Thus, Ranillo had to clarify that she was not going to visit Pacquiao nor watch his fight.

Pacquiao dismissed allegations that he and Ranillo have been seen “buying groceries” or “stepping out

010 proves to be cooperative and frutiful for the Winnipeg-based New Wave / Postpunk-influenced Filipino band haLf man haLf eLf. On February 9, haLf man haLf eLf performs at Ozzy’s Bar at Osborne Village Motor Inn, on Osborne Street, with Canadian artists Here the World and Jordan Ashlin.

On February 19, haLf man haLf eLf headlines “Rock against Ignorance,” to be held at West End Cultural Centre. Other performers are Here the World, Narra, Skip the Silence, and Sacrament. The event will also showcase art and photo exhibits by Ronald Yaya

and Arnel San Jose. Respectively.

On February 27, haLf man haLf eLf with fellow bands Here the World and RYZE will provide an entertainment of original music at a post-Valentine social dubbed as “Red, White & Winter,” taking place at Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba. haLf man haLf eLf’s regular recording sessions at Chill Recording Studio (http://www. chillrecordingstudio.com), 697 Sargent Avenue, for their planned debut CD—entitled Tales from a Half Forgotten Era—is ongoing.

Thanks to Reiss Zurbyk, the studio’s owner and sound engineer, for the superb accommodation

and excellent production and for rendering the dancing basslines; and also to Tristen Grant for laying in the drum tracks. The album also features many nonconventional musical instruments like trumpet, flute, harp, bagpipes, banjo, mandolin, and xylophone. haLf man haLf eLf’s primary objectives are to endorse Filipino music and culture by performing mostly self-penned compositions and to promote musical awareness by recognizing the diversity of music genres. haLf man haLf eLf consists of Gilbert Trillana (keyboards), Jun Villanueva (guitar), Bert Nicanor (cajon/drums), Aldo

Power of the ‘Pork’

T

he term “pork barrel” refers to the use of government funds that are intended to benefit the constituents of a politician in return for their votes.

In effect, it is an institutionalized -- and legalized -- form of votebuying. So, whoever controls the allocation of pork barrel funds wields immense political power.

In the nine years that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has been in office, she learned how to use the power of the “pork” to keep her allies in line as well as to stop opposition to her self-perceived “god-given” mandate to rule the country. Indeed, the “pork barrel system” -- officially known as Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) -- has become the

linchpin of her brand of “political patronage.”

Who gets the pork?

The annual allocation of pork barrel funds total about P7 billion with each senator getting P200 million and each congressman getting P70 million. It would have been easy for Congress to allocate the pork barrel funds in the national budget prorated equitably amongst the legislators and everybody would be happy. As a matter of fact, that’s how it used to be in the old days when legislators would get their fair share of the pork to spend on their pet projects for their constituents. But the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos took away the legislature’s “power of the purse” during the martial law days.

While the legislators’ pet projects are well-meaning and beneficial to their constituents, the lack of transparency and auditability gives rise to opportunity for graft and corruption. There are reports that some legislators demand kickbacks or commissions -- as high as 50% -- from contractors and suppliers. Corruption is more prevalent in public work construction projects where bidders could collude to fix their bids; thus, allowing kickbacks -or “tongpats” -- to be embedded in their lump sum bids.

Gloria used the “power of the purse” to strengthen her political position and exercise sole discretion and total control on how pork barrel funds are disbursed, and how much each legislator would receive. In other words, the legislators are at the mercy of Gloria in getting their pork. If you were not in Gloria’s good graces, you would end up with nothing to spend in your district.

This led former Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Emilia Boncodin to accuse Gloria of practicing “selective release” of pork barrel funds which means that only those close to Gloria would get the funds.

Biggest pork barrel in history In 2005, Gloria used more than P80 billion for pork barrel -that’s 10 times the normal amount!

More than half of this -- P46.8 billion -- were allocated for “Healing of Edsa I, II and III Funds.” When asked in a radio interview, then Budget Secretary Romulo Neri explained that the P46.8-billion “healing of Edsa wounds” fund included P29 billion for “back pension payments for retired Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine

National Police personnel.” That’s a hell of a lot of money! Shouldn’t they be included in the Department of National Defense and Philippine National Police budgets? Or was it used surreptitiously to keep the military “loyal” to Gloria during the “Hello Garci” election cheating scandal and Edsa III uprising?

In 2008, former Speaker Joe de Venecia revealed that Gloria controlled the legislators’ pork barrel through her sons, Congressmen Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo and Diosdado “Dato” Arroyo. According to De Venecia, the legislators couldn’t get their pork barrel approved

by Gloria without her sons’ endorsements. It is no wonder then that several impeachment petitions against Gloria were defeated by her allies in Congress. Who would dare infuriate her and risk losing his pork?

Indeed, by controlling the pork barrel allocations of the congressmen, Gloria became the “Supreme Overlord” of the House of Representatives. Their mantra was: “What Gloria wants, Gloria gets.” And anyone who would buck her would get a kick in the back. De Venecia found that out when, in a swift act, he was unceremoniously ousted from the Speakership by his party mates whom he thought were his friends.

Sorry, pal, but as someone once said, “There are no permanent friends and no permanent enemies, only permanent self-interest.”

A few weeks ago, Escudero -- a proponent of the abolition of the pork barrel system -- said that Gloria “has been exercising her power to impound pork not because of any lofty purpose but to give out or withhold political favor to help her allies and to strangle her political opponents.”

Last year, Gloria released P459 million in pork barrel funds for infrastructure projects in her son Mikey’s 2nd district of Pampanga.

This is seven times more than a typical allocation. But what is appalling is that Gloria is running for Congress in Pampanga’s second district and billboards were erected all over the district showing her picture wearing a hard hat, claiming credit for all the infrastructure improvements in her son’s district. Obviously, she’s using pork barrel funds for her congressional campaign. It may be deemed legal because it was part of the PDAF general appropriation.

However, as Congresswoman Ana Theresia Baraquel commented, Gloria’s use of pork barrel funds was “improper” and “shameless” spending.

With Gloria running for Congress virtually unopposed, she could easily become the next Speaker of the House of Representatives. She’d then be closer to her ultimate goal of amending the constitution to change the form of government to a parliamentary system.

Is the country ready for a structural change of government?

In my opinion, the country is not yet ready, not until we have a leader who has the best interests of the country and the people in mind. Right now, that leader has yet to emerge. But with 10 presidential candidates in the May 10 elections, there should be one that would rise above the others to take the biggest challenge of the presidency; that is, abolish pork barrel.

Francis “Chiz” Escudero introduced Resolution No. 900 “urging the Senate committee on Finance to cause the immediate review and accordingly propose the repeal or amendment of Presidential Decree No. 1177 and Book VI of Executive Order No. 292, specifically all provisions pertinent to budget preparation, disposition and management, with the end in view of reverting to Congress the power of the purse as No pork, no fat. prescribed by the Constitution.”

Books Are the Carriers Of

(On the Essential Literary Texts of Various Cultures)

T

he overall makeup of every nation and its people is deeply rooted in its culture and oldest literary texts. Although they are not necessarily absolute, these pieces of literature are usually highly revered and serve as foundations of the collective beliefs of the people and cultures where they originated.

Here are examples of old and significant literary texts originating from various cultures.

Finland.

The Kalevala (translates to “lands of Kaleva”) is a book and epic poem the Finnish philologist Elias Lönnrot (1802–1884) compiled from Finnish and Karelian folklore in the 19th century. It is the national epic of Finland and is traditionally thought of as one of the most significant works of Finnish literature. The Kalevala is credited as an inspiration for the national awakening that ultimately led to Finland’s independence from Russia in 1917. (Kaleva is an eastern part of the city of Tampere, Finland.)

India. The Vedas (a Sanskrit word meaning “knowledge”) are a large body of texts originating in Ancient India. Composed in the language Vedic Sanskrit, the texts constitute the oldest foundation of Sanskrit literature and the oldest scriptures of Hinduism. Just like Christians on their interpretations of the Bible, various Indian philosophies and sects take differing positions on the Vedas.

There are schools of Indian philosophy that cite the Vedas as their scriptural authority. Other traditions, notably Buddhism, do not regard the Vedas as authorities but only as important components of Hindu literature.

Iceland. The Old Norse Poetic Edda and Prose Edda, both of which were written down in Iceland during the 13th century, comprise what is collectively known as The Edda. They are the main sources of medieval Norse mythology and ancient poetry in Iceland. The Poetic Edda, also

known as the Elder Edda, is a collection of Old Norse poems.

It is the most important source on Norse mythology and Germanic heroic legends. The Prose Edda, known also as the Younger Edda, is an Icelandic manual of poetics that also contains many mythological stories. Its purpose was to enable Icelandic poets and readers to understand the details of ancient poetry. The Icelandic scholar and historian Snorri Sturluson wrote it around 1220.

Mongolia. Üliger (a Mongolian word meaning “tales”) is the general term given to tales and popular myths of the Mongols and Buryats of northeast Asia.

An important part of the oral traditions among the Buryats and other Siberian tribes, üligers generally tell the legends of mythological and historical heroes, making them a significant component of Mongolian literature. Like other epics in oral literature, the same individual üliger can vary greatly in length and content depending on the occasion it is recited.

Japan.

Man’yōshū (“Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves”) is the oldest existing collection of Japanese poetry, compiled circa 759 A.D. It is one of the most revered Japanese poetic compilations. Many historians believe that the compiler, or the final in a series of compilers, was Ōtomo no Yakamochi.

China. In Chinese culture, one of the most important bodies of literary works is The Five Classics, which consists of five ancient books used by Confucianism as the basis of studies. These five works are as follows: I Ching, or the Classic of Changes, contains a divination system comparable to Western geomancy.

Shī Jīng, or the Classic of Poetry, consists of poems, folk songs, minor festal songs traditionally sung at court festivities, major festal songs sung at more solemn court ceremonies, and hymns and eulogies sung at sacrifices to deities and ancestral spirits of the royal house.

Lǐ Jì, or the Classic of Rites, describes social norms, ancient rites, and court ceremonies.

Shū Jīng, or the Classic

of History, is a collection of documents and speeches believed to have been written by rulers and officials of the early Zhou period and before. It includes examples of early Chinese prose.

Shūn Qiū, or the Spring and Autum Annals, is a historical record of the state of Lu, Confucius’s native state, from 1022 B.C. to 612 B.C., written (or edited) by Confucius himself, with implied condemnation of usurpations, murder, incest, etc.

Philippines. Two of, if not the most, popular literary works in the Filipino culture remain to be Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. These two influential novels were written

by José Rizal (1861–1896), the Philippine national hero.

Many historians believe that Rizal’s literary works were among the historical documents which became instrumental in the awakening of Filipinos’ sense of patriotism during the Spanish colonialization period of the 1800s.

Without books, history is silent, literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill.”

erhaps a good winter escape to refresh your body and soul is a cruise to the Caribbean.

The Caribbean has been a “magnet to travelers interested in a unique blend of sun and surf, the history of ancient civilizations and ecooriented adventures”. Being at sea combined with shore excursions is one of the most pleasurable and

Cozumel overflows with Mayan history and peoples’ hospitality, with the famous ruins of Tulum in nearby Plaza del Carmen. Majestically perched above the turquoise Caribbean,

the ancient Mayan City of Tulum was once a place of worship and solitude for the Mayan kings and also a major centre of commerce.

Tulum is ringed by a protective wall on three sides and the sea on the other as a defense against invasion from the enemies. The remnants of the pyramid-shaped “El Castillo” and the Temple of the Descending God provide an insight into the architecture of the Mayans who excelled in arts and sciences.

Bustling and modern, George Town is the capital and main city of Grand Cayman Islands.

Life in the Caymans is not cheap although a quite number of foreign businessmen and investors flock to the island because of its tax haven status since 1966.

As we noticed the landscape of Grand Cayman is anything but lush only compensated by worldrenown underwater gardens and the casuarina trees along the white sands of the Seven Mile Beach.

Our sightseeing tour included driving through this British Crown Colony until we reached a popular place called “Hell”, so named due to its eerie rock formations. It has a tiny post office from where you can send postcards stamped from “hell”. The tour then proceeded to the Turtle Farm, the world’s only commercial green turtle breeding farm. Nearby is a cafe serving the specialty dish of turtle meat soup and sandwich.

We had a quick run to the Tortuga Rum Factory noted for its notoriously delicious rum cakes with flavours from coffee to key lime. A boat trip took us to the famous Stingray City, a sandbar inhabited by these graceful and fascinating creatures.

Famous for coffee, rum and reggae, Jamaica (land of springs), is an island nation of the Greater Antiles with Kingston as its largest city and capital. With a population of 2.8 million, Jamaica is a British Commonwealth realm with Queen Elizabeth as its head of state.

Though a small nation it is rich in culture and history. Official language is English.

Dunn’s River Falls of transparent waters plunging through rocky gorges is the adventure in Ochos Rios. The side of the cascading falls is covered with green vegetation keeping the water cool as people climb the waterfalls with the help of tour guides from the park.

The falls empty into the Caribbean Sea. We enjoyed Fern Gully, a winding scenic stretch of road with green rainforests and wide variety of ferns towering high above the canyon.

The Endless Flight of the Bumblebees (Specifying Western Classical Music) [Dedicated to someone I know who says Classical music is crap and irrelevant and has ‘no-balls,’ whatever this means]

sked to cite examples of classical music, many people usually reply with names of composers like Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Vivaldi. In a way, they are partially correct; but technically speaking, their answers are politically incorrect, because these composers and their respective works are examples of only the so-called Western classical music. In effect, they are failing to acknowledge the classical music of other cultures. Also, contrary to what many assume— that only classical works composed in the period 1550 to 1900 may be filed under the genre— classical music encompasses a broad period in the entirety of human civilization from roughly the 9th century to present times.

Considering all the above, we should now acknowledge that Classical music is not only the old Western. It also includes Indian classical music, Chinese classical music, Japanese classical music, Arabic classical music, etc. Add to that, there are many contemporary composers and artists whose musical works may be categorized as classical—like John Williams, who is best known as the film scorer of such classic movies as Jaws, Star Wars, Superman, Home Alone, and the first three Harry Potter; John Cage, Philip Glass, Chen Yi, Ravi Shankar, and Yo-Yo Ma. Characterizing Western Classical Music Although there are varying definitions of Western classical music many of which are often

vague, the following are widely accepted characteristics that can help classify a song or a musical work as such.

1. Western classical music is often distinguished by its wide use of instruments of varying tones and pitches. The different movements of classical music have been affected largely by the invention and modification of instruments throughout time.

While classical music has no “set” of instruments required to fulfill certain standards, composers

wrote typically for orchestras and ensembles.

2. The instruments used in most classical music were largely invented before the mid-19th century (often much earlier) such as the piano, harpsichord, organ, violin, and flute. However, in the classical music of the 20th and the 21st centuries, many composers have begun incorporating electric instruments like guitars and synthesizers.

Familiar Western Classical Masterpieces Here are examples of popular and familiar Western classical masterpieces plus their respective composers. Take time to check them out on sites like Youtube or

better yet download them so you will be able to match each musical work with its title and respective composer.

Many people can hum the dominant melodies of many of these works yet do not know their titles or the names of their composers. (Tip on easy downloading: On your Internet browser, search [title of musical work + name of composer + rapidshare.])

Filipino Journal 25 Moreover, there is also an argument that asserts, only people with above-average intellectual capacity can ‘endure’ listening to classical music for hours because of the genre’s structural complexity, which can easily bore an ordinary listener. Regardless, classical music’s being regularly featured in pop culture has resulted in a renewed interest in it.

To parents like me, include classical music in your children’s playlist—because listening to classical music develops an individual’s sense of creativity and lengthens her attention span.

Final Note Many people find appreciating or listening to classical music difficult, because classical works are usually instrumental and typically lengthy, thus hard to memorize and to remember their titles. But little do many people realize that they hear pieces of classical music most of the times. For instance, many of the instrumental pieces played as background music for movies, television programs and advertisements are excerpts of classical masterpieces. There is also a popular perception that only people from upper-level society appreciate classical music. This is a misconception, because it has been observed and proven that many ordinary people listen to classical music.

A Race Around Downtown

D

espite the cold afternoon of January 30, 2010, a group of people was geared up; bags on their backs, cameras in their hands, and gushing excitement in their faces. I was one of those people; one of a few that were about to compete on a race, not around the world, but in the bustling streets and intertwined skyscrapers of downtown Winnipeg.

Inspired by the TV show “Amazing Race”, the R.A.C.E.

(which stands for Ridiculously Awesome Challenging Escapade) is designed to test one’s sense of direction, patience, guts, and intellect. Organized by UMSigaw, our fellow student group from the University of Manitoba, the R.A.C.E. is also part of the organization’s efforts to raise money for a bursary that would be awarded to an upcoming high school graduate entering any post-secondary institute or a student already in one, entering their second year.

One thing I must say about the R.A.C.E. was that I was such a great time. No matter how tired I got from running, my teammates and I were just so determined to get to the next clue and perform the laborious tasks that were prepared for us. It was fun trying to figure out what used to be Eaton’s Place (in case you’re wondering, it is now the mall we call City Place) and scouting out the specials in its food court or trying to shoot paper balls in a garbage bin at Portage place.

Alas, after all the competitive running and clue-searching, one team was crowned the winner of R.A.C.E. It seemed impossible at first, but my team won! It was such a joy to win a challenge, but there’s one catch: it was only a trial run.

I and my fellow participants were there to test out the mechanics of the game and to see how well it would work out (seeing as this is the first time UMSigaw has planned such a thing).

The real R.A.C.E. has not begun yet. Arriving in summer,

the real R.A.C.E. will be bigger, better, harder, and will take place not just Downtown, but around various spots in Winnipeg. Does that sound good enough for you?

A showcase of different asian cultures and talents

rom January 25 to January 29, 2010, the University of Manitoba held the Asian Movie Festival – a week-long event that portrayed the lustre of Asian cinema and culture. The festival was part of the University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) Celebration Week, an event usually held during the last week of January, highlighting student issues and university life.

Korea, Indonesia, Philippines,

and several other Asian countries were represented in the event.

Each country showed a film that greatly symbolized the essence of its culture; from martial arts to horror to a love story, there was great variety in the choices of films.

There were two magnificent Filipino movies shown in the Philipine evening hosted by UMSigaw: one was “Ploning”, a movie about the philosophies of

love in the midst of the beautiful island of Cuyon, Palawan of the Philippines; the other was “Ded na si Lolo”, a comedy-drama about the various superstitions that surround wakes and funerals in the Philippines. Each movie gushes with brilliance (albeit in different ways) and reminds us of the rich and colourful culture that we Filipinos possess and value deeply within our hearts.

It was later revealed that a Canadian ice maker buried a loonie under centre ice and as fate or luck would have it, both Canadian men’s and women’s teams won gold. Thus, the legend of the lucky loonie was born. There is no doubt that there’s going to be loonie buried under centre ice in Vancouver. Go Canada Go!

Then, as a speedskater, she raced in Salt Lake 2002 and Turin 2006.

Vancouver will be Hughes’s fifth Olympics. And at age 37, she’s still a medal threat in the 5,000metre race.

Maliksi presented him a key to the Province of Cavite siting that he received wonderful comments about him from so many Winnipeggers who used to live in Cavite. The first workshop had over 500 people on the Gov. Ayong Maliksi farm.
