CELEBRATING SIMBANG GABI IN SPIRIT “We would really encourage everyone to continue the spiritual sacrifice for the rest of the novena masses. Let us together use the power of prayer particularly the power of the novena masses. The more we become one in prayer, the more powerful our prayer can be.” These were the parting words of Rev. Msgr. Enrique M. Samson Jr., parish priest of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Winnipeg, during the first Novena Dawn mass last December 16th via livestream. With the province’s COVID-19 public health orders still in effect until January 8, 2021, no in-person worship gatherings are allowed which includes the Simbang Gabi or the 9-day Novena Dawn Masses, a tradition of Catholic faithful during the Christmas season. It may be a different set up this year and the churches in Winnipeg encourage the community to still be one in prayers especially these challenging times, as they bring the holy celebration to each home virtually.

SIMBANG GABI

T

he usual Simbang Gabi celebration fills St Peter’s Parish Church on Keewatin every year. But this year, due to the pandemic, only a few staff and volunteers are in the church to assist and set up the celebration for live streaming via their Facebook page. Parking spaces are empty and no more after-mass gathering for breakfast. But the spiritual sacrifice continues as the Novena Dawn masses tackle this year’s theme: The Theology of the Pandemic (Healing of the World). Masses are everyday until December 24th from 5:30-6:30am. The church also invites everyone to attend the Christmas and New Year drive-in mass celebration at the Petrus Hall. THE PAROL TRADITION STILL SHINES BRIGHT

T

he parol or the Filipino ornamental lantern has been an iconic symbol of Filipino Christmas. It symbolizes the star of Bethlehem that guided the 3 kings in search of the newborn Jesus Christ. The parol has evolved to many shapes and styles but the tradition remains. Here in Winnipeg, some families still make the parol making a part of their Christmas celebration.

Labagala Family made their parol as a family activity to teach their kids how it’s done, reminiscent of their creations back in the Philippines.

Charinel Navoa used to join parol making contest. She and her daughter makes parol and nativity scene as their bonding during Christmas.

Pure joy of Christmas

A

mid the continuous threat of COVID-19 in our lives, we have to cling to the clusters of hope hanging before us and we have to find ways to make our faith as the strongest elixir of spiritual endurance especially in the celebration of Christmas 2020. What makes Christmas 2020 too different from last year; and probably next 2021. Are we ready to embrace the viral changes of the family and friend reunion as we celebrate the Birth of Lord Jesus? As a part of our inquisitiveness, do we have still a time to feel the pure joy of Christmas? Christmas 2020 is facing the many challenges on how to enjoy the pure joy of celebration. And the emerging changes will disrupt the usual family gatherings due to the health protocols imposed by the provincial

medical officers to avoid the spread of this pandemic. Gone are the nights of family gathering with relatives and friends gather to enjoy the food and drinks, gift sharing, singing and dancing: the festive narrative of family togetherness. With this strict adherence on prevention of the spread of COVID-19, do we have time to find the pure joy of Christmas? Do we have time to savour not only the fleeting happiness but also the joy of the Birth of Lord Jesus Christ. In the Third Advent celebrated in the Christian world, pure joy of Christmas is totally felt as we welcome the prophesy of St. John the Baptist the coming of Messiah. And when we celebrate our Christmas by yourself, or by a few members of the family, a far cry of the last year's celebration,

Duterte urges people to skip big gatherings on Christmas holiday

I

n his weekly address to the nation, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte appealed to the Filipinos to skip attending big parties and gatherings this coming Christmas holiday to flatten the curve of the everincreasing COVID-19 cases. "All of the Christmas of your lifetime, ngayon lang naman ito isang beses ang hinihingi ng gobyerno para sa iyo, hindi para sa gobyerno," Duterte said, adding the government is just adhering the general population to remain healthy. Mass gatherings such as Christmas parties, carollings and

reunions are strictly prohibited. And Ano advised the people to celebrate the Christmas holiday with their immediate family. In the briefing, Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Ano instructed to carry out a strict implementation of the minimum health standard and quarantine protocols. The PNP-Joint Task Force Shield will assist in the implementation. Meanwhile, added implementation of fines is being planned by the NCR officials for violation of not wearing a face mask and face shield.

it seems that hope if fleeting, like happiness will not be felt because the absence of the parents, or the siblings are celebrating with their own family; or your best friends are not present to exchange gifts, smiles, laughs and hugs? Or your grandchildren who give so much joy as they smile with sweet innocence. The birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, the very centre of the Christmas celebration when pure joy is strengthened as Fr. Tommy Lane had said in his homily: "When our hopes are dashed, let us turn to Jesus. He is the answer to all our hopes and dreams. He will not let us down." And as we celebrated Christmas 2020 in the very confine our own home sans the warmth of the big crowd, the sweetness of the smiles and the tenderness of countless and endless Christmas greetings, we can still engage the pure joy as we celebrate the Birth of Christ for joy is embedded into our lives: the flaming love for parents and the siblings; the unconditional love between husband and wife; the sweet smile of innocence of the child; the arrays of food and drinks to share. There are many joys in our lives, embedded into our own being, and normally, we do miss to enjoy its meaning. Most of the time we just feel the fleeting happiness which is temporary, just receiving a gift from your loved ones. You are happy but then, happiness dies down. But joy is impossible to define but it can be told by action, by deeds and by our body language. Joy is the soul of happiness,

as one writer wrote with passion the meaning of joy. And many sages, historical figures, writers, even ordinary people find joy as they live life to the fullest. And I found my pure joy when Helen Keller writes: "Joy is the holy fire that keeps our purpose warm and our intelligence aglow." Added to this is what Mother Teresa says: "Joy is prayer, Joy is strength, Joy is love. Joy is a net of love by which you catch the soul." And Oscar Wilde flashes his joy on what he writes: "A flower blossoms for its own joy." Yes, we are born for our own joy but not to worry if we are not admired, we are not recognized for what we have doing with others for our birth has a purpose. And world today has the shades of grey hovering in our horizon, that

Some parents have no capacity to handle the home-based study due to the lack of knowledge of technology," Briones added. The face-to-face class project limits not more than 20 students per class and the classes will not be held daily. There are 1,100 public schools in the country that have been nominated for the implementation of limited face-to-face learning. Most of these public schools are in the regions where COVID-19 cases are very low. Approval from the local government officials and the consent of the parents are still the deciding factors for the complete implementation of the pilot project.

the people are becoming the hostages of many troubles but Joseph Campbell gives us his wide perspective: "We cannot cure the world of sorrows but we can choose to live in joy." And this gives us self-fulfillment when Buddha says: "When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves." Yes, Joy is enshrined in us, embedded into our psyche. As what Carlos Santana says: "If you carry joy in your heart, you can heal any moment." And remember what Khalil Gibran writes: "There are those who give with joy, and that joy is their reward." And as for me: "Joy is the language of the heart; the breathe of our soul." And as we celebrated Christmas 2020 in our own way, pure joy is the Birth of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah.

NCR and some provinces optedout face-to-face classes pilot project of DepEd he local government of the National Capital Region, Davao and Cotabato will not join in the Department of Education's face-to-face class pilot project for January implementation. Department of Education Secretary Leonor Briones said: " This is voluntary and we need parental consent. In our findings, the spread of the COVID-19 does not happen in the school, but mostly in their homes." According to Secretary Briones that the pilot project being promoted by the Department of Education is in preparation for the normalcy of the school operation now that there will be a vaccine available to the public by next year. sia’s Multimedia Star Alden Richards not only made his fans’ hearts flutter but also made history with the first-ever virtual reality concert in the Philippines via the highly successful “Alden’s Reality: The Virtual Reality Concert.” Held in three timeslots last December 8 and 9, GMA Network’s sold-out show enabled Alden’s supporters from all over the globe to celebrate with him as the Kapuso actor marked his 10th anniversary in the entertainment industry. And unlike usual online concerts, “Alden’s Reality” gave them a taste of what the future of concert shows would be. It combined cuttingedge technology and performances to produce a full-length concert and immersive interaction with their idol right from the comforts of their homes. A virtual date like no other, the show begins with Alden waking up in his house and inviting his “date”—the concertgoer—to join him as he navigated Alden’s Reality. He then set the mood up by dancing to catchy songs popularized by some of the world’s most loved boybands. Joining him were his friends Rodjun and Rayver Cruz. Alden then went on to answer questions just like he was having a oneon-one conversation with his “date,” sharing his innermost thoughts and reminiscing about his ups and downs in the past. From his heartfelt rendition of “God Gave Me You” to performing his latest single “Goin' Crazy” and dancing to the beat of BTS’ “Dynamite”—Alden only showed how he has grown as a performer on stage. “Alden’s Reality” also saw Alden looking back on his career as an actor and thanking all his former leading ladies. In this segment, OPM band December Avenue joined Alden on stage. Alden’s fans and friends further showed their support to the Kapuso actor as they shared their experience online. The hashtag “AldensReality” became the top trending topic on Twitter Philippines. Alden’s latest single under GMA Music and FlipMusic Productions, “Goin' Crazy” also topped iTunes Philippines and is currently included in Apple Music’s “Absolute OPM Playlist.”

Musings with Jomay By Jomay Amora-Dueck jomay.amora@gmail.com

December 20, 2020 - January 5, 2021 2020, despite its notorious reputation, has taught me so much about myself and life in general. I have learned that being more intentional about what we want (and don't want) in our lives allows us to not only make progress towards changes we are making but gives us a chance to learn and enjoy along the way. I also realized that when my actions

are infused with meaning and my thoughts with gratitude, life seems sweeter and my connections and commitments are stronger. It is bittersweet that I write my last article of 2020. Thank you so much for reading my articles and for being a part of our Filipino Journal family. I wish you the very best life has to offer, a happy holiday, and let’s all look forward to

Goodbye 2020, Hello 40!

T

his is my last article of 2020. I have to be honest; I am so looking forward to this year ending. I am sure you all feel the same way. I’d be a liar if I said that I was okay and never had any challenges and struggles this year. I am more than done with the virus and wearing a mask. I hate not being able to hug my family and enjoy a simple dinner with them. I miss enjoying coffee with a friend. I miss going out with my husband. I miss travelling and seeing new places. I miss total freedom. Despite it all, I am very grateful for what really matters most—my family, my friends, and you – our loyal readers. People are truly what matter the most on this earth and our relationships with them. Just think about how you would not have gotten through this year without the support of your friends, family, and co-workers. As we move into the final days of 2020 – and as I look forward to my 40th birthday – I like to think what I have learned in 2020 and in the last 39 years of my life. I like to think about what will make the next year – or the next 40 years – the most meaningful. And this is what I came up with: 1. Love yourself FIRST. 2. You can’t fill from an empty cup. 3. Learn to say NO. 4. Love like it’s your last day on Earth. 5. Forgive unconditionally. 6. Prioritize happiness. 7. Health is wealth. 8. Be grateful. 9. Life is for experiencing. 10. But don’t get into debt.

11. Speak your truth. 12. Remember your roots. 13. There’s no place like home. 14. Travel. It’s the best way to learn about yourself, humanity and the world. 15. There’s really no Planet B. 16. Live within your means. 17. You get what you pay for. 18. There’s beauty in simplicity. 19. Life is short. 20. Memento Mori. You are going to die. 21. No justice, no peace. 22. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. 23. You’ll never find balance in life but try to. 24. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. 25. Don’t be afraid to admit you are wrong. 26. Do something now that in ten years you’ll thank yourself for. 27. Never stop learning. 28. Spend time alone and avoid those who can’t. 29. Remember those who were there for you when you’re at your worst. 30. And remember those who weren’t. 31. Don’t go to bed angry. 32. Everything rises and passes. It’s a law of nature. 33. You don't have to attend every event to which you're invited. 34. Learn to keep your mouth shut. 35. A true friendship picks up where you left off, no matter how much time has passed. 36. Take the leap of faith. 37. Get out of your comfort zone. 38. Seek out people who tell you the hard truths you need to hear. 39. Pay it forward. 40. Realize you are infinitely powerful and beautiful.

Winter Wonderland – Drive-Through Only

T

he annual Canad Inn Winter Wonderland lightshow has always been an event to be enjoyed from the comfort of your vehicle. In past years, it was also a time to step out of the car and take photos among the varying light displays throughout Red River Exhibition Park. Winter Wonderland was originally scheduled to open in early November and due to COVID19 public health orders, the drive-through event was forced to close, or at least postpone their opening. With revised public health orders announced on December 12, 2020, the annual lightshow was allowed to re-open to the public with the restriction that participants had to stay in their vehicles.

Adhering to public health orders, and out of an abundance of caution, the 2020 edition of Canad Inns Winter Wonderland isn’t offering on-site food vendors, sleigh rides or skating at their winter village normally available as the last stop in the 2.5km light show display. Canad Inns Winter Wonderland is open daily from 6:00pm to 10:00pm until January 2, 2021. To enter Canad Inns Winter Wonderland, you require a vehicle pass which can be purchased in advance at any Winnipeg Canad Inns Destination Centre or at the gate. Keeping the JOY alive at Christmas By: Kim Bedona-Padua

T

he hustle and bustle of the holiday season, this year, maybe a little less intense but, no doubt, still exciting. While holiday parties may be missing from our typical December schedules, the pandemic can't stop the spirit of the season! Decorating the house, wrapping gifts, and baking goodies will keep the joy alive. Ultimately, just as in any other year, however, the excitement can become overwhelming and put children into full sensory overload. This, coupled with the world's unsettledness, can increase cortisol, causing more stress than joy. Implementing positive strategies into our routines can help counteract these tensions and reconnect us to the season's true meaning. During the holidays, children's emotions are at the forefront, and a season of excitement, happiness, and hope quickly turns into apprehension,

stress, and irritability. The constant stimuli and lack of downtime lead the way to exhaustion and crankiness, and, therefore, children become more reactive, and behavior issues result. Even the most laid-back of children have difficulty managing their emotions. The ups and downs of the emotional roller coaster, along with the craziness, make it challenging for parents to keep themselves calm, let alone their children too. What should be a time of love and peace quickly turns into frustration and arguments. Much of the season's adverse effects come from upended schedules, late nights, and unhealthy habits. And because the season is "magical," parents often assume their children will automatically be on their best behavior. Sadly, this is not the case, so parents often resort to shouting, continued on page 15►

hen the pandemic hit last March 2020, most of us stayed home and found ways to adjust to the new normal. Suddenly, social media became a way to connect with one another as well as learn new information and skills. Technology brought more people together and our new normal allowed us to spend more time with our families and at the same time learn new skills. The Coffee Club group discovered a way to continue connecting and learning from one another through the Facebook Live Cooking Show. There were volunteers from various culture who showcased their ethnic food. We needed to come up with a title so there was the “Name the Cooking Show Contest.” Lorietta Fallaria won and it’s been named “The Coffee Club Kitchen.” We also had a logo making contest where Justine Keith Reyes, one of our youth participants , won. There was a lot of interaction as a featured volunteer

shared a recipe. Viewers asked about the dishes, memories attached to it, cultural tidbits and a lot of joking around. We were apart yet we felt that we were together in one room sharing happy conversations and memories. Because of its success, we are doing it again. This time for a holiday edition. We are excited for the lineup. This will sure keeps us entertained and connected as we stay home this holiday season due to the red code restrictions. We are grateful for our volunteers and participants who are actively engaging. We have proven that we are all resilient and that we can cope together as a community.

20/20 Vision From the Challenges of 2020 (Part 1)

"Our reaction to a situation literally has the power to change the situation itself." ~ Anonymous With over a million lives that perished from COVID-19 and millions more getting sick, or have lost their livelihood or family members, these past nine months felt like humanity's dark night of the soul. The pandemic era ushered in a 'new normal’ as we now call it, and looking back on 2020, we saw ourselves adapt, remain resilient and find creative ways to keep moving forward. Living in the New Normal In the world of business, companies found ways to soldier on. Office staff were allowed to work from home, while onsite essential personnel wore their personal protective equipment (PPE), kept safe distance, and practiced hand hygiene. In fact, Microsoft Canada was already looking beyond the pandemic era at its Future Now event held in late October. Canada's COVID-19 economic recovery plan was the main subject at the software giant’s premiere annual event. Having gone digital this year, over 100 plus resource speakers ranging from government officials to Microsoft executives and industry thought leaders engaged in discussions about real-world digital transformation. The Hon. Navdeep Bains, federal Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, was among the notable guests. As for budding entrepreneurs, even the pandemic cannot dampen their spirit and enthusiasm. In late October, the Barangay Canada Community Update welcomed Renterii, a tech startup that enables people to rent various gear and lifestyle items in their locality. Stopping by to talk about their exciting new service were the company’s co-founders Jordan Smith and Jhoan Jimenez Molin, and creatives Kyle Manalang and CJ Macaraeg. As a first-generation newcomer, it’s inspiring to witness Molin, Manalang and Macaraeg -- all second-generation Filipino-Canadians -- at the forefront of innovation and entrepreneurship! Not to be outdone, the entertainment

industry also adapted to the new reality. Following the lead of other film festivals that went digital this year, the Philippines’ Metro Manila Film Festival will be streamed on the online platform upstream.ph. Filipino screenwriting legend Ricky Lee dropped by the Barangay Canada Vodcast in early December to talk about his adapted screenplay ‘Tagpuan’ (Rendezvous) which is among this year’s official entries. He also shared an anecdote that explains the title of his latest book ‘Kulang na Silya’ (Missing Seat). Having been a participant of his screenwriting workshop back in the early 2000s, it was exhilarating that my former mentor accepted the invitation and allowed viewers a glimpse into his unparalleled literary career that spans forty years. Among those that made major adjustments due to the pandemic restrictions were schools and other educational institutions. Students shifted to remote learning or blended learning to keep up with their lessons. Graduation rites looked very different as well to ensure compliance with public health guidelines. At the ‘walkthrough’ graduation ceremonies of the Brandon campus of Assiniboine Community College, everyone was required to wear masks and practice physical distancing. Attendees followed a path bordered by guard rails. Near the entrance of this path, graduates picked up and put on their gown, cap and tassel. A short walk away along the path was the section where diplomas are handed off by college leadership. At the end of the path is a station where the gowns were dropped off. Adapting to the new normal also produced unexpected accomplishments. One such example is the re-emergence of Barangay Canada. Once a dormant media project, its main challenge was having a nationwide scope. With the surge in popularity of cloud conferencing, it suddenly became easier to touch base with Filipino-Canadian community figures anywhere in the country. After a well-received inaugural season of 25 episodes, the Vodcast made a triumphant return in its second season in late November. continued on page 19►

Ano'ng Masasabi Mo? (Readers' Column) by Kathryn Valladolíd Ebrahim

I’ll Always Be Grateful “No one who achieves success does so without the help of others. The wise and confident acknowledge this help with gratitude.”—Alfred North Whitehead Gratitude is the appreciation and thankfulness expressed towards others for their kindness and generosity. In the grand scheme of things, it is the affirmation of the goodness that motivates and encourages a person into infusing equal or greater goodness in one’s life. It is also a recognition that the kind gesture extended was external and did not come from one’s own initiative; instead, that it came from others. Thus, in a community or society, gratitude involves humility and interdependence among its members. The Myth of Independence Interdependence, as derived from Buddhism, is the notion that nothing exists all on its own. No one is self-sufficient. One way or another, a person will need the support and assistance of others, even if that person would claim to be independent for the fact that he lives on his own. In the society where one exists, grocers, fish mongers, tailors, mall operators, merchandizers, salon experts, doctors and other health professionals, co-workers, neighbors, etc., give relative service to those in need; they somehow help each other. How does one say he is independent? A headstrong single lad in his late 30s had chosen to immigrate to another country to seek greener pasture. He is a medical professional who mustered all the courage that he could gather to strike it out on his own. He gets a job, eventually enabling himself to afford the rest of the

bare necessities for a happy and comfortable life. Despite his shyness, he would still greet his neighbors whenever he sees them. He drives to the nearest mall to buy groceries and other home supplies. At times, he would have his haircut at the salon inside the mall building. He would be identified as single and on his own; but in reality, the society has provided him a more-than-dependable support system to aid him in his life’s journey. He needs only to recognize the assistance that abound him for which, in turn, he could pay forward by helping his neighbors. Gratefulness Is a Catalyst for a Holistic Health and Well-Being The most powerful emotion that envelops all other virtues is gratitude. Being grateful assures the person of a happier, healthier, and successful life in which the following six attributes are included, but not limited to: 1) Better Physical Health, 2) Stronger Relationships, 3) Greater Happiness, 4) Enhanced Resilience, 5) Sharper Thinking, and 6) Reduced Levels of Stress, Anxiety, and Depression. While the long-term effect is to exhibit an overall positive persona, there are certain ‘roadblocks’ that one should look out for that may cause the delay and prevention of the enrichment and nurturing of gratitude. Negativity Bias. A person’s thought patterns and belief systems are often a result

Horoscope Eclipse season will take your breath away this month, Aries, as you’re pushed in new directions. The demand for special treatment, exemption from having to follow rules, being self-absorbed; having excessive self-admiration, vanity, lack of empathy; and a high regard for admiration and approval are qualities to look out for. If one thinks that the world owes him and that he deserves everything, then there won’t be anything to be thankful for. It is irrational to think that a person could ultimately exist without any form of support. Most of all, practice humility. Gratitude is not something one is born with. It fell in your social sector, so you could have had a sudden realization about a close friend, or someone in your network may have opened a door to one of your hopes or dreams (solar eleventh house). of the dictates or influences of his family and community elders that were passed on from past generations. The same notion (positive and negative) is then carried out to the next generation. While the individual remembers the importance of the positive enforcements, the impact on the negative would seem to be greater since he had already attached certain reactions and emotions to the learning experience. Keeping a gratitude journal and reframing the mind would help ease the pattern. Habituation and Novelty-Seeking. Everything new excites and motivates the person. The opportunity to experience gratitude is lost when the person chases something that he doesn’t have and focuses on it—in the form of an object, thought, or relationship. He forgets what he already has and takes it for granted since it had already become part of his life, turning this into a mere habit. The key is to practice reframing the mind to understand and appreciate more what the person has, while emphasizing their value and reinforcement into one’s life. The Inability to Acknowledge Dependency. No one could be ultimately self-sufficient. In a given society, a person will always need support from those that are essential to him—supermarket, drugstore, medical help, food shops, etc. This societal support group aids a person’s existence and is too apparent not to be recognized. Each person needs the other to exist. Comparing Oneself with Other People. Media has been successful in providing the superficial notion that other people look better and do better in life, which in turn, destroys a person’s real-life thought patterns on the self, including one’s abilities and capabilities. Mindfulness and selfawareness is key to practicing nonjudgmental critique. Harboring Grudges. Holding on to hate, anger, resentment, and disgust has a grave effect on the individual who was wronged. While this may seem helpful in processing the pain inflicted by the wrongdoer, it puts the person in a negative state of emotion. With proper awareness, it is always better to replace these negative emotions with love, understanding, and compassion. By doing

Harness the eclipse vibrations at the onset of December that are telling you to rest, surrender, and lie low, Cancer. This eclipse could drain your energy and encourage you to heal whatever emerges at this time or find closure on something that has long been weighing upon your soul. A Larger Threat Looms on the Horizon But many challenges remain. More than a war with this invisible coronavirus, another battlefront opened up: the battle for people’s hearts and minds. As lockdowns continued and the social disconnect dragged on, some folks turned to alternative media sources for information. Among the things the Internet is notorious for is the proliferation of sketchy websites that provide unreliable, unsubstantiated and outlandish information that led people to flout public health orders, based on the speculation that the pandemic is a mere hoax or a ploy of the government to gain more control over the people and line its pockets. In early November, international sustainability professional Maggie Lee reminded viewers of the Barangay Canada Vodcast to be mindful as well of the prevailing climate crisis and environmental damage. Maggie shared her insights about this continuing existential threat, using as an example how large amounts of recyclable plastic waste end up in landfills instead of actually getting recycled. The pandemic has also racked up a tremendous human toll in the form of economic hardships from job loss, illness and shuttered businesses. Desperate times have driven those already in poverty to use children in acts of online sexual abuse and violence. In late November, Anu George Canjanathoppil of International Justice Mission, and Winnipeg-based community advocate Leila Castro visited the Vodcast to shine a light on this human crisis. It was one of those dark topics that just needed to be dragged into the cold light of day. (to be concluded in part 2) Kris Ontong is an award-winning community advocate and a finalist in the 12th RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards. He is the co-founder and vodcast host of Barangay Canada.

Winnipeg Doctor Becomes First Manitoban To Receive COVID-19 Vaccine December 16, 2020, Winnipeg - The Manitoba government launched its first COVID-19 immunization clinic this morning to deliver the life-saving vaccine to the first priority group of health-care providers, Premier Brian Pallister announced today. “Today is a monumental day in Manitoba and a long-awaited day of hope as we begin to deliver the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine nine months after our first positive case in the province,” said Pallister. “Our frontline health-care workers have been stepping up throughout this pandemic and we know that stepping up now to protect them first is the right thing to do, so that we can protect them and the patients they look after. The first Manitoban to be immunized was Dr. Brian Penner, who works in internal medicine at HSC. “I am now safer for my friends and colleagues, and I hope everyone does their part to stop the spread,” said Penner. “I’m old, I work in a hospital, I work in a clinic and I do a lot of house calls on people in assisted living sites,” said Dr. Brian Sharkey, a family physician who also works in urgent care at Victoria General Hospital. “I’ve been worried about the vulnerability of those sites and the possibility of bringing the virus to someone who is unprotected.” continued on page 20►

Travelling with me in the heart of the Canadian badlands were my daughter, Marie Anne and her husband, Jerry, and their children, Cassy and Cole. Drumheller is a small town of 7,982 inhabitants in Alberta located more than 100 kms. northeast of Calgary. For anyone visiting Calgary , Drumheller is an absolute stop and it’s well worth it. Exploring it’s surrounding badlands is a learning experience. Why are they called the “badlands”? Due to its extreme temperatures, water scarcity and rugged terrain the indigenous Lakota people were the first to call these places “maco-sico” or “land bad”. Drumheller is widely recognized as the “dinosaur capital of the world” because of the high concentration of dinosaur fossils and skeletons found in the area. The discovered fossils come from 60 different species of dinosaurs. What are dinosaurs? Dinosaurs are extinct reptiles with four limbs and a long tapering tail ranging in size from a few feet to almost 100 feet long. Million of

years ago Drumheller was tropical which was conducive to plant growth where dinosaurs, chiefly terrestrial , carnivorous and herbivorous, could live and flourish. A Canadian geological surveyor, Joseph Tyrrell, stumbling upon a 70-million-year-old dinosaur skull, discovered dinosaur bones in Alberta’s badlands and coal land deposits around Drumheller in 1884. As a tribute to him, the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology in Drumheller was established and opened in 1985. The museum hosts Canada’s largest collection of over 160,000 catalogued fossils, with 800 of them on permanent display. It is a museum like no other and great for all ages. We spent hours at the main area of the museum, the Dinosaur Hall, which houses over 30 mounted dinosaur skeletal frames. Our two grandchildren, Cassy and Cole, had so much fun viewing and admiring the dinosaur skeletons in various sizes. However, the world’s largest dinosaur, the fiberglass Tyrannosaurus Rex, could not be seen in the museum. The largest dinosaur measuring 26.2 meters (86 ft. high) is located

somewhere else, at #60, 1st Avenue West of the town, and we had to climb 106 stairs, for a small fee of $3.00, to the top where 12 persons can fit in the mouth at a time. A female, it is 151 feet long and cost $1,065,000 million to build. Driving southeast of the town along Hwy. 10 we discovered the “hoodoos” of Drumheller valley. naturally shaped by wind and water. Standing up to 20 feet tall they are called “hoodoos” because they are kind of eerie They also have other names from “fairy chimneys” to “goblins”. across the Red Deer River built in 1931 to give coal miners easier access to the Star Mines area. There’s a little danger even if you swing the bridge because the sides of the bridge are high. With the surge of the second wave of the covid-19 pandemic learn more about doing your part to limit and contain the spread of the virus before travelling to Drumheller. And don’t forget - masking, sanitizing, distancing (mask, hugas, iwas).
