New Music for 2021
t is only the start of the year, but music enthusiasts should already be looking forward to the interesting albums that are scheduled for release in the coming months. Among this slew of new records include the following. Deacon Blue – Riding on the Tide of Love One of the purveyors of Sophistipop / New Wave music in the late 1980s and the 1990s, Deacon Blue was formed in 1985, in Glasgow, Scotland. The Scottish group was behind the '80s-released singles “When Will You (Make My Telephone Ring),” “Love's Great Fears,” “Love and Regret,” and “Real Gone Kid.” Still fresh from 2020's City of Love—its ninth album, Deacon Blue is ready again with a batch of new materials coming out next month. Titled Riding on the Tide of Love, it consists of eight songs that are a mix of well-orchestrated midtempo stompers and reflective slow burners. It opens with the upbeat title track and ends aptly with the slow ballad “It's Still Early.” Other standout songs are the equally engaging and breezy “She Loved the Snow”; the folky, acoustic-oriented “Look Up”; the bluesy, countryside allure of “Send a Note Out”; and the slow, piano-led ballad “Not Gonna Be That Girl.”

THE COMEBACK KIDS By Ryan Reyes
RECAPS
The 2020-2021 NHL season will be one like no other. It’s been shortened to 56 regular season games, has new COVID-19 protocols in place and Lord Stanley’s Cup will be awarded in July. With that in mind, let’s examine how the Jets have fared in their first 3 games. The Jets opened their season January 14th at Bell MTS Place against divisional opponent Calgary Flames. The official fan attendance count was zero. But if those stands were filled the Jets would have heard a deafening roar of approval after an exciting sequence that saw defenceman Derek Forbort absolutely rob Rasmuss Andersson of a sure goal, Kyle Connor springing Patrik Laine on a breakaway, and Laine firing a laser of a wrister past Jacob Markstrom. All of this excitement after an opening goal by Calgary’s Brady Tkachuk. Despite Winnipeg’s efforts they were outplayed in the first period and trailed 3-1 after goals from Gaudreau and Lindholm. Mark Scheifele capitalized on a Nikolaj Ehlers rebound 34 seconds into the second period. Later on Patrik Laine set up Kyle Connor’s one-timer with a deceptive crossice pass to tie the game up at 2 a piece. Winnipeg utilized 5 forwards on that 5-on-3 power play. Neither
team scored in the third period. In overtime, Laine again showed his skill by burying a quick-release shot after being sticked-checked on his first attempt. This night was Laine’s night! The Jets came away with a 4-3 OT win. The Jets made their way to Toronto on Monday the 18th and took on the Canadian division favourites, the Maple Leafs. The Leafs showed why they were heavily favoured in this contest as they dominated play throughout most of the game. They outshot the Jets 38-28; in the second period it was a lopsided 22-6. Kyle Connor got us on board that period after markers from Tavares and Marner. Marner added an empty netter to seal the 3-1 victory for the Leafs. Toronto’s speed and skill were too much for Winnipeg to handle. Unfortunately Patrik Laine did not suit up due to a day-to-day upper body injury. A positive note was Jets defenceman Logan Stanley’s debut. He did not look out of place during his 11:19 of ice time, and contributed 3 shots on goal, 1 hit, 1 takeaway and a 0 +/- rating. Winnipeg travelled yesterday to the Canadian Tire Centre to take on the Ottawa Senators. Starting slowly is a recurring theme for the Jets so far just 3 games into the

season. Again they found themselves trailing in the first period after goals by Ottawa’s Josh Norris (his first NHL goal) and Chris Tierney. Adam Lowry tipped Neil Pionk’s point shot before the first period ended to put the Jets on board. At one point in the second period Ottawa was outshooting Winnipeg 29-12. Alex Galchenyuk blasted a one-timer past Brossoit to put the Senators up 2. It was their second power play goal of the game. Kyle Connor responded with a power play goal of his own (a one-timer as well) to bring the Jets within 1. Late in the third period the Jets were able
to force overtime after captain Blake Wheeler’s tip of Josh Morrissey’s blast. In OT Andrew Copp made a perfect pass to a streaking Nikolaj Ehlers who beat Murray stick-side for the gamewinning goal.
FORWARD THINKING
The Jets can’t afford to continue to start games slowly. The shortened season puts an onus on results and an overemphasis on patience might do Winnipeg more harm than good. DeMelo\Poolman\Samberg\Heinola will be welcome additions to the defense corps.
FAST FACTS
● The Jets have earned 4 points(2 OT wins) in 3 games despite never leading ● Winnipeg is 5th in the league in Shots Against per game with 35.0 ● Kyle Connor leads the Jets with 5 points(3 Goals, 2 Assists)

The Republic of Adobo by Rod E. Cantiveros
What are your resolutions for 2021? Are your goals for this year doable? Probably, your 2021 goals might be meagre in number due to the onslaught of COVID-19 which led to a new normal: wearing a face mask, washing your hands and social distancing. For sure, most of your 2020 resolutions did not materialize due to fear and anxiety of the increasing COVID-19 cases resulting in more lockdown, quarantine and isolation. And the only hope to beat this pandemic is the ongoing inoculation of vaccines by the government initiative. Then there will be a
possibility to go back to normal as we had before this pandemic. But don't let this pandemic stop you from setting and meeting up your goals. New Year's resolution is fun and entertaining. It enlivens us to enjoy religiously what changes we might have this year. Inspire yourself with your New Year's resolutions. About your New Year's resolutions? show. So here’s some advice if you’re determined to set — and meet — a goal in 2021. Make it specific and realistic. “Resolutions tend to be too big without any thought about whether they are practical or even possible,” says our colleague Tara Parker-Pope. Resolving to “exercise more” is vague, but resolving to add five or 10 minutes to each workout is measurable. If you find yourself recycling a goal from years past, consider why it didn’t stick. “The resolution ‘I’m going to lose weight’ doesn’t address the underlying issue of why your diet isn’t as healthful as you want it to be,” Tara says. “Maybe the resolution should be: ‘I’m going to stop buying packaged snack foods and snack on fruits and vegetables instead.’” Go easy on yourself. If the thought of setting ambitious resolutions feels overwhelming, downsize them into smaller but still satisfying goals. “It’s still important to celebrate that you’re working toward making a

t took less than two years before Ronald Chubb, 31, was sentenced to life, no parole for 12 years, in emotional sentencing held last January 15 in the Queen's Bench Chief Justice Glenn Joyal. His accomplice, Geordie Delmar James, 36, who broke into the home with Chubb in West End pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 5 years. Jimmy Adao, Sr, and his wife, Imelda Adao could not hold their tears as the sentencing was being meted to the accused who killed their son in a violent home invasion in March 2019. The grieving parents had forgiven the assailant and his accomplice.

" Yes, justice is done but we have still the pain of losing our son. But we could do anything to bring our son back to life. We will endure this pain forever, it will not fade away, " Imelda said. "They took away our son, so instant, so fast." Jimmy Adao, Jr. 17, known as "Jimboy" to many, was a Grade 12 student at Tech Voc High School who had a dream that someday he would be like his parents, owning a bakery business. The court heard that Chubb was highly intoxicated during the incident. Jimboy was upstairs with his grandma when the home invasion happened. The teen was stabbed multiple times and died. He suffered several sharp force injuries, including a deep wound to his back. The court heard that both men had a difficult childhood and were involved in many crimes. "I do feel sorry for them and if they had that love in their childhood, this could not happen to us," Imelda said. "He stole our son and his dream. Our pain is unbearable losing our son in that way, and as long as I

"We will remain in that house because of the many memories of our son. Our decision not to move to another house is because we want to feel the presence of Jimboy," Imelda said. 20/20 Vision From the Challenges of 2020 (Part 2)
"It is the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) that those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed." ~ Charles Darwin

fter so many months of feeling besieged by the social and economic restrictions of the pandemic lockdown, it was easy to lose sight that the rest of the world is experiencing similar hardships. In some countries like the Philippines however, the situation was exacerbated by the destruction in the wake of back-to-back super
typhoons Goni and Vamco from late October to mid-November. Despite these grim developments, the Filipino spirit of community collaboration known as Bayanihan re-emerged from the darkness and inspired a plethora of fundraisers and donation drives from the Filipino diaspora. Here in Canada, Calgary-based businesswoman Alma Armada and Eusebio ‘Jun’ Cacayuran, president of the Filipino Organization in the Rocky Mountains (FORM), along with a handful of other Filipino-Albertan organizations, banded together to organize the purchase and distribution

of rice and other relief goods for families in the typhoon-stricken areas. Calling itself the Gintong Butil Outreach, the initiative quickly grew to involve over 46 Filipino-Canadian organizations, with Barangay Canada included among its media partners. Distribution efforts were coordinated with the Canadian Red Cross and various NGOs based in the Philippines, while photos of the relief operations are shown on its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ GintongButilOutreach. Reasons for Hope: COVID-19 Vaccine and Collaboration with Various Levels of Government In mid-November, hope was rekindled with the announcement that a vaccine against COVID-19 has been developed, and that it shows 90% effectiveness in clinical trials. The news was hailed around the world as a historic moment. An additional source of encouragement for the FilipinoCanadian community was the support and concern shown by the various levels of government. In Manitoba for example, Notre Dame MLA and Critic for Immigration Malaya Marcelino met with this writer and other community representatives to get inputs for her vote on Premier Brian Pallister’s Throne Speech made in early October. The following month, no less than Prime Minister Justin Trudeau himself held a virtual meeting with representatives of the Filipino-Manitoban community to see how they were coping in these pandemic times. Selected guests from the business, education, youth and health care sectors took turns speaking with the Prime Minister to share an overview of how their respective sectors were doing and the concerns they might have. Saving Christmas From Being Cancelled The sentiment that the world has turned a corner became more palpable as additional information about the COVID-19 vaccine rollout was released, and with the anticipation of the new US administration putting a more effective pandemic containment plan into action. Christmas celebrations eventually pushed through, albeit in virtual form which has become the new normal in the pandemic era. On December 16, this writer once again had the privilege of representing Barangay Canada at Parliament Hill's Virtual Christmas Gathering, thanks to the kind invitation shared by Narima Dela Cruz, founder and president of the Surrey Independence Day Society (SPIDS). Dela Cruz had the honour of lighting the Advent candle of Peace, and speaking about its significance at the said event which was jointly hosted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister, the Hon. Marco Mendicino, Winnipeg-North MP Kevin Lamoureux, and Scarborough Centre MP Salma Zahid. For its own part, Barangay Canada sought to end the year on an upbeat note for kababayans by way of an hour-long

CPC’s O'Toole Meets With Filipino-Manitoban Community By Kris Ontong
The Hon. Erin O'Toole, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC), ‘visited’ Manitoba on January 16 as part of his month-long virtual tour of the country. The leader of Canada’s Official Opposition met with the province’s various sectors, including representatives of the nearly 80,000-strong Filipino community. Among the Filipino-Manitobans invited to have a dialogue with O’Toole were Ron Cantiveros of this publication, CBC’s Faith Fundal, MAFTI president Genalyn Tan, PKF Attorney Gary Sarcida, Ernesto Nicolas Ofiaza Jr. of the Filipino Music and Arts Association of Canada, Inc., Mabuhay TV’s Lourdes Federis, this writer who represented Barangay Canada, and LGBT advocate Konzuela Beatrix Alnas, to name a few. With growing speculation of a possible federal election this year, the Conservative contender as the next Prime Minister spoke about economic recovery from the pandemic and foreign policy as his key priorities. Asked about right-wing extremism taking hold among Canada’s conservative base, O'Toole replied emphatically that “there is no place for intolerance in the CPC,” and that their values are vastly different from those of the Trumpera US Republicans. The Manitoba leg of O’Toole’s tour was assisted locally by the office of Waverley MLA Jon Reyes of the province’s Progressive Conservatives. In a statement posted on social media, Reyes expressed his appreciation to be involved in the event. “Happy to be part of today’s virtual meeting with fellow members of Manitoba’s vibrant Filipino community engaging with my good friend and fellow veteran Erin O'Toole, Conservative Party of Canada - Parti conservateur du Canada leader. As always, thank you for your service and your time for meeting with us today. Merci! Salamat!"

“I can’t get them to behave!” By Kim Padua
G
etting our children to behave the way we want them to can be a struggle. We can use behaviour shaping and implementing reinforcement schedules to create positive behaviour outcomes and improve parent-child bond. B.F. Skinner’s behaviour theory regarding Operant Conditioning – is catching the child being good and rewarding them for a job well done. Coupled with ignoring negative
behaviours, can be the most effective combinations in managing behaviour. To take this further, implementing positive reinforcement in the most effective way that requires forethought and a planned-out schedule, no matter what approach is chosen. Believe it or not, out children want to please their parents and other significant adults in their lives, but they seek success in their efforts, implementing the reinforcement schedules will establish both but only

ith the COVID cases rising, Ellen Adarna is taking precautions in choosing the people she spends time with. Aside from the one who were sure to have tested negative, she hangs out with people who barely leave their homes. Thus, in the event that her neighbor, Derek Ramsey hosted a dinner event, she was in attendance. Adarna stated that since Ramsey lives five houses away from her, she deemed it as safe. Also invited to the said gathering was Ruffa Gutierrez,
whose photos and videos of both Adarna and Ramsey have already gone viral. Although Adarna is aware of the public’s speculation of whether there is something brewing between her and Ramsey, she merely laughs it off saying “there’s really nothing.” After a two-year break, Adarna is back in the limelight with a sitcom to be aired on TV5 entitled, “J&E: John en Ellen” opposite John Estrada. Set to premiere this January 24, it will air every Sunday from 7:00 to 8:00 in the evening.

Positive Thinking Is What We Need (Especially in These Trying Times) Ano'ng Masasabi Mo? (Readers' Column) by Kathryn Valladolíd Ebrahim
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”—Martin Luther King Jr., A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches Have you ever been in a conversation with a person so negative in his thoughts that make you want to literally look the other way and wish you had not met him at all? I had. I have probably been in such a situation multiple times and have met hundreds of those who think that way in this lifetime. Optimism or Pessimism? A known test for being able to tell whether a person is optimistic (positive) or pessimistic (negative) is to ask this simple question: Is your glass half-full or half-empty? The answer would give it away. It may be easy for one person to say to the other, “Think positive” or “Choose to think positive,” but what he doesn’t know is why the other person’s initial thought or reaction is that way. Did he recently lose a loved one, or a pet? Maybe he did not make it to the qualifying exams. Was he jilted by a would-be lover? Is he being evicted from his home? Maybe he lives in a stressful environment. There are many reasons or causes for negative thinking,
towards which in our waking hours we might find ourselves gravitating. It’s not the person’s fault that his mind is wired towards negative thoughts. While we can attribute negative thinking to genetics, most of it relates to upbringing and environment. If it is something that a person has learned, then it may be also something that he can eventually unlearn through effective self-examination and stress management. Negative thoughts promote a negative outlook in life, while having positive thoughts promote happiness and a positivity. Honestly, I sometimes find myself sinking in the same quagmire and yes, it is indeed a struggle to revert to positivity. Practice Makes Perfect When you find yourself giving in to negative thoughts, think again (pun intended). Examine yourself. Run thoughts through your head – rationalize your own thoughts. Clear out all the misconceptions and misinformation that you may be having. If you feel that you have been responding negatively for as far as you can no longer remember, it is time to kick the habit and focus on thinking positively. Unlearning may be a long and painful process for some, but it will definitely be a fruitful experience.

thoughts. Improve on the negative thoughts that you usually had. Don’t say anything to yourself that you wouldn’t say to anyone else. Along with the psychological, your physical well-being will greatly benefit from the habit of thinking positively. Lesser stress, lower blood pressure, and increased skills for coping stress and hardships or difficulties in life are only a few manifestations of a holistic health. Don’t expect change to come overnight. All it takes is practice. After all, positive thinking is only reversing your negative approach to something productive, useful, and pleasant. With this, you will be able to
Here are pointers that may help you turn things around. 1. Realize that there are areas in your life that needs change. Search for matters that you are usually negative about. It may be work, traffic, or relationship. Think of a positive approach towards it. 2. Monitor yourself. Make it a habit to check on yourself within the course of the day if you have been more positive than negative. Find ways to turn negative thoughts into positive. 3. Allow yourself to laugh. Seek humor in your daily life and even during difficult times. Smiling and laughing relieves a person of stress. 4. Promote a healthy lifestyle. Include a good diet and exercise in your daily routine. A good, healthy diet can fuel the mind and body, while exercise can change the mood and relieve stress. 5. Surround yourself with positiveminded individuals. Positive support and encouragement as well as feedback is what you might be needing. Negative people will encourage doubt and stress to an already chaotic situation, and they will not help in kicking the negativity habit. 6. Rationalize your thoughts. Always make the habit of checking your own
deal with difficult situations in a more constructive way. It may not be easy, but it is doable. A well-known cliché on this would be, “Looking at the bright side.” However, whenever you do, make sure that you are within reason and that your choices are realistic. *Currently working at the Philippine International Convention Center, where she began service 21 years ago, *Kathryn Valladolid Ebrahim was an alumna of St. Scholastica's College–Manila and finished a degree in Bachelor of Arts, Major in Sociology, at the University of Santó Tomás.

Today you may take a look around your home and see what needs improvement, Aries. A pending visit from a friend or relative may provide the incentive to get things in shape. A fresh coat of paint and some new window treatments and rugs will make a big difference. If you don't have time for that, fill the house with flowering plants as an effective camouflage.
Even though you seem content with your career, you're ready for some change in your life, Cancer. This is the time to consider joining a group. How about a local book club? Or if you're more actively inclined, sign up with a tennis team or local running club. There are lots of diversions to occupy your mind as well body. The real upside is that you're likely to make some wonderful new friends.
You consider yourself a rational person, Libra. If you aren't a scientist, you should be. You view life objectively and rarely let extraneous matters cloud your thinking. You're likely to be taken aback by today's extraordinary events. Your intuition is so sharp that you can almost read people's minds. At first you think this is just a fluke, but you may be a believer by the end of the day.
You're never at a loss for an opinion, Capricorn, and today is no exception. The energy of the day is such that you're happier listening to conversations than participating in them. You can't help but smile at the misinformation that gets bandied about. Since no one has bothered to ask for your opinion, you aren't about to offer it today. Tomorrow is another matter entirely.
Family, home, and hEarth are on your mind today, Taurus. There may be a community event that you attend out of a sense of obligation but stay for the sheer fun of it. Sometimes you get so caught up in work and the daily hassles of life that you forget there's a whole world outside of work. It does your heart good to take in a wider view.
Even though you think of yourself as a rational person, Leo, today your intuition is so keen that even you can't ignore it. Rather than try to will it away, why not embrace the messages that bombard you? Give yourself this one single day to embrace the possibility that you may have some extrasensory ability. There's no harm in trying to understand the extent of your power.
This is your lucky day, Scorpio, and you can expect all sorts of wonderful surprises. You may enjoy a financial surprise or someone could propose an interesting and potentially lucrative project. Take advantage of any opportunities that come your way today, as all signs indicate that new ventures will ultimately prove quite profitable.
Finances are highlighted for you today, Aquarius. This isn't necessarily a good or bad thing - it just is. Spend as much time as necessary sorting out your records and making sure everything is in good order. It's never too early to collect receipts and get organized. You may feel inspired to concentrate on budgeting as well.
Today may be an odd combination of social and financial, Gemini, likely a combination of the two in some way. Perhaps you need to meet with an attorney and end up dining together. Or you and a casual acquaintance could decide to go out for a drink. Legal documents are highlighted, so be sure to carefully look over contracts of any kind.
You may feel slightly bored and restless, Virgo. If so, an opportunity may come your way today that shouldn't be ignored. You may have a chance to take a trip to an exotic locale or attend a class or lecture that will open your mind to all sorts of interesting possibilities. Just because you only have one life, that doesn't mean you can't fit many different lives into it.
Passion is very much on your mind, Sagittarius. Unfortunately, you have a lot to do before you can concentrate on romance. Much as you'd prefer to put paperwork off for another day, you really should buckle down and get it all done. You will be relieved to have it behind you, and you will be free to enjoy the evening pursuing other interests.
Conversation and travel are highlighted today, Pisces. You may sit next to someone fascinating on a plane ride. You two have much in common, and the time will pass quickly as you enjoy discovering more about one another. You're likely to exchange phone numbers, if not kisses, by the end of the trip. There's no denying the chemistry. The question remains whether you will act on it or not.

DOH confirms UK Covid-19 variant has entered the Philippines
T
he Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed that the more contagious corona variant from the United Kingdom has already been detected in the Philippines. Such confirmation was announced after samples of a Filipino aboard a plane from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on January 07 produced positive results. According to Health Secretary Francisco Duque, the patient is 29 years of age and hales from
Kamuning, Quezon City. He flew to Dubai for business purposes on the 27th of December last year and flew back to the country on the 7th of January, aboard Emirates Flight No. EK 332. Upon his arrival, he was swabbed and quarantined in a hotel, as per SOP. The results were released on the next day and with the positive outcome, the patient was arranged to be transferred to a quarantine facility in Quezon City. His samples were forwarded to PCG for whole genome sequencing.
Genome sequencing is a process that enables researchers to know how a virus has mutated based on samples obtained from patients who tested positive for Covid. Duque confirmed that the patient has pneumonia and is being treated for it. Furthermore, the patient went on his business trip with his female partner but she has tested negative. Nevertheless, she is still under quarantine and monitoring for safety purposes.
Girlfriend and mother of first Filipino patient with new Covid-19 variant test positive
F
ollowing the news of the man who has tested positive with the new UK Covid-19 variant, the Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed that the girlfriend and mother of the said patient have both tested positive as well. The DOH has reported the first new variant case as a 29-year old male hailing from Quezon City who flew to Dubai on the 27th of December and returned to the country on the 7th of January. His girlfriend, who travelled with him, first tested negative but a re-swab yielded a positive result while the mother already came out positive with the first swab. Both test results are currently being validated to check for the new variant. When asked why the girlfriend tested negative on the first swab test, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire stated that most likely, the virus was still intubating
during the time of her initial swab. Vergeire further stated that this is why timing is an essential factor when giving the test. Apart from the patient’s girlfriend and mother, there were nine other contacts who came out positive. Eight of these were also passengers of the same flight which returned to Manila on the 7th of January.
The samples of all eight passengers have already been forwarded for genome sequencing. Moreover, of all the passengers on board the Emirates Airline Flight No. EK 332, 153 have been successfully contacted and are already isolated and re-tested for COVID. Efforts to contact the remaining six are also currently underway.

cause those behaviors to stop when reinforcement stops. Switching to a variable ratio after an initial period of continuous reinforcement can create long term effectiveness for maintaining positive behaviors. Incorporating any reinforcement schedule requires planning and patience. Parents must also be clear on the expectations of their children. Things such as “be good” do not give children any clarity of what they need to do or not do. When children understand why a specific behavior is good, they will be more motivated to succeed through effort and action. This approach ultimately lines up with the growth mindset theory. Additionally, using rewards that a child sees as valuable is vital. When we approach each child and each behavior with consistency and patience, we can reinforce positive behaviors that improve a child’s behavior and the bond they have with adults.

Trump’s fate is at the mercy of the Senate PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com
A
s I am writing this column, President Donald Trump has only two days left in his presidency. Then he will go into retirement. It must be hard for him to accept that he would be a one-term president being defeated by President-elect Joe Biden by a stunning eight million votes! Yet he claims that he was cheated. He claims that he won the election with millions more votes. And to the very end he believes that Biden committed election fraud. He filed more than 60 lawsuits in at least five states but the courts dismissed his lawsuits as baseless and without merit. Even the Supreme Court dismissed two cases by unanimous vote of the justices, three of whom were his appointees. He still believes that he will be president on January 20, 2021. He believes that the American people will not allow Biden to be sworn into office. And by all accounts, he is bent on pursuing the presidency even after Biden is inaugurated. How is he going to do it? Is he planning to declare martial law and have Biden arrested? Meanwhile, there are strange chatters in the Internet by Pro-Trump supporters. One supporter said two days ago, “The good news! Biden’s inauguration postponed! Excellent! Biden oath taking will never happen! President Trump will continue as president indefinitely! Wonderful! He’s the chosen one! He’ll prevail!” So I asked the supporter, “where did you get the information?” He replied, “It’s the sharing of information about Pro-Trump! Some actions have been executed but the official announcement could be a few days!” I said, “Let’s see what happens. You mean to say that Trump will take over the presidency on Jan. 20? That would be a coup.” Then he said, “I don’t know! But the
government will be under military control!” Whoa! Is this what Trump’s supporters believe? A martial law? The question is: Would the military support a declaration of martial law? I doubt it. Rumors abound I did my research and found an article that says, “Joe Biden postpones inauguration rehearsal over security threat as FBI warns of ‘concerning chatter’ after Capitol riot.” It’s so easy to drop the word “rehearsal” from the sentence and totally change its meaning. But this is the kind of chatter among Pro-Trump supporters that would give the impression that Biden has “postponed his inauguration.” And pretty soon the word is out that Trump will stay as president indefinitely. But nevertheless, it would be prudent for Biden to watch out for turbulence. Last Friday, a Virginia man with fake inaugural credentials, a loaded handgun and more than 500 rounds of ammunition was busted while trying to pass through a U.S. Capitol Police checkpoint in downtown Washington. Indeed, there have been rumors that Trump supporters – heavily armed militias – will converge on January 17th at the Capitol to finish what they started on January 6th – the overthrow of the government… a coup d’état. Trump’s mob While it is our fervent hope that Trump will go into retirement quietly, I don’t think he’d retire. To the very end of his presidency, Trump truly believes that he’s been cheated in the election. And that’s probably the reason why on Jan. 6, 2020, he tried one more time to lay claim to the presidency by inciting the large mob that had gathered in front of the White House. He urged them to
march down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol 1.5 miles away. He told them he’d lead the march. But he didn’t. But his supporters have been unleashed just like a genie out of the bottle. Well, what happened Donald, did you decide to play golf instead of leading your supporters to lay siege on the Capitol? But without Trump leading them -- they’re now on auto-pilot – the mob forced their way into the Capitol breaking window glasses and breaking down the doors. Overwhelmed, the Capitol Police were overpowered. And the mob went looking for lawmakers who gathered in a joint session to certify the Electoral Colleges votes. Vice President Mike Pence who was presiding over the joint session was surprised when the mob started chanting “Hang Mike Pence! Hang Mike Pence!” Pence and his family ran and hid in a secure room. He managed to evade the mob by a few seconds; otherwise, he would have been hurt by the mob. Other legislators ran for their dear lives. Fortunately, none of them were caught; otherwise, it could have ended in a bloody massacre. At around 11:00 PM, after the National Guard -- who arrived in the nick of time -- had cleared the Capitol of rioters. The legislators assembled again to finish their business of certifying the Electoral College votes. It was past 3:30 AM when the certification was complete. Hats off to Pence for his statesmanship in seeing to it that the certification would be complete that evening. But that didn’t make Trump happy. The whole idea of inciting the insurrection was to stop the certification process. And Pence finished the certification to Trump’s consternation.
Trump denounced the impeachment as part of the “witch hunt” against him. What follows is a Senate trial that requires a 2/3-majority vote, which is tough considering that the 50 Republican senators were mostly beholden to Trump. But who knows, 17 of them could be persuaded to break rank with Trump. However, if many Republicans would choose not to attend the Senate impeachment hearing, it would drastically decrease the number required to achieve 2/3-majority. On January 17th, Washington DC looked like a war zone with more than 25,000 National Guard personnel deployed around the White House, the Capitol and other government buildings. Seventeen other State Capitols have National Guardsmen deployed. Other states have taken precaution to protect their Capitols with local police and law enforcement personnel. The FBI assigned thousands of agents in various states. America is at war! And the enemies are from within. At the end of the day, the militias – except for a few armed men – didn’t show up. But that’s not an indication that they’ve withdrawn. They will be around and show up when the government lets its guard down. The Biden administration has to be vigilant and be ready to defend the Constitution again. The Senate is expected to reconvene on January 19th. However, with the election of two Democrats from Georgia, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, the number of Democrats in the Senate increased to 50, thus splitting the Senate 50-50. The Senate President will be the incoming Vice President Kamala Harris, who would be a tie-breaker in the event the Senate vote is deadlocked. Sen. Chuck Schumer will become the new Second impeachment Majority Leader at which time the On January 13th, the House of Democrats would have full control Representatives voted to impeach of both houses of Congress. He’ll wave for posterity and then enters the cabin, never to be seen again until he arrives in Mar-A-Lago as a private citizen. Thus, the reign of Donald Trump will come to an inglorious end. Meanwhile, back at the White House, the swearing-in of President Biden will begin at 12:01 PM. Barring disturbances created by Trump’s supporters, Biden will take his oath of office after which a military aide will signal him that he has the nuclear football, a different version of what Trump had during his presidency. Trump’s nuclear football, which he had with him on Air Force One, will be deactivated at exactly 12:01 PM, the precise time when Biden’s nuclear football would be activated, ready for use by him. The nuclear football is a briefcase, the contents of which are to be used by the president to authorize a nuclear attack. The transfer of nuclear power will then be complete, a fait accompli. And upon Biden’s shoulder would fall the heavy burden of leadership, which he carries 24/7 everyday during his presidency. With the election of Biden as president and the Democrats’ takeover of the Senate, Biden will have a powerful bloc that would support his progressive agenda. And with Trump thrown into political oblivion, one wonders what would be his fate? With 29% approval rating after the January 6th fiasco, Trump’s future is in limbo with a slim chance of recovery. And if the Senate convicts him, he’d be banned to run for office again for the rest of his life. Gone will be his presidential pension, secret service security detail, travel allowances, and other benefits. He might not even get a presidential library. He will go into retirement in shame. Indeed, Trump’s fate would be at the mercy of the Senate.
