LEA SALONGA LIVE IN WINNIPEG Kicks off North American "Dream Again" Tour
Multi-awarded actress and singer Lea Salonga has once again brought the house down as she kicked off her Dream Again Tour 2022 at the Club Regent Event Centre last April 6th. The venue was packed with both Filipino and nonFilipino fans who were not only excited to see their idol perform but also to finally be in a concert venue for a live entertainment, after two years of pandemic restrictions. This is not the first time that Lea Salonga performed in Winnipeg but guests share the same feeling that this is yet the most special one as it mirrors joy and resilience during these unprecedented times.

Lea Salonga's Dream Again Tour 2022 in North America kicked off in Winnipeg last April 6th. It was also the first time that Lea performed on stage in two years. "I am nervous," is what Lea said during the opening, sharing how thankful she is, now that things are getting better and that she is finally back on stage to perform. Lea performed a lot of new songs in this tour, loaded with emotions. It was at the last part of the night that she sang some of her classics. And with the fans requesting for more, Lea did a few more songs for the final encore.

The herd of photorealistic dinosaurs is ready to delight Winnipeg area families when Jurassic Quest® arrives at RBC Convention Center for one weekend only April 15-17. Jurassic Quest will visit for the first time since 2019 with its most beloved and unique experiences for the whole family including life-like dinosaurs, dinosaur rides, live dinosaur shows, interactive science and art activities, bounce houses, inflatable attractions and more. In addition to new dinos in the herd, new activities for 2022 include the “Triceratots” soft play area for our littlest explorers. New for 2022, join us for The Quest, our official educational and entertaining journey through the Jurassic. The Quest is an interactive adventure where guests will meet

Follow the ten clues to the “Quest Spot” signs and collect a prize at the end. The Quest is included with general admission. Families can walk through the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods to see the dinos that ruled on land, and “deep dive” into the “Ancient Oceans” exhibit, making its Canadian debut, to come face to face with the largest apex predator that ever existed – a moving, lifesize, 15-metre long megalodon! Meet the babies, hatched only at Jurassic Quest: Cammie the Camarasaurus, Tyson the T. rex and Trixie the Triceratops – and, you may even catch one of our star dino trainers: Safari Sarah, Dino Dustin, Captain Caleb, Prehistoric Nick or Park Ranger Marty! ON CUE: Winnipeg Pinoy Bilyarista T o all billiards enthusiasts out there, did you know that there is a group that you can have fun and build friendship with on the pool table? The Winnipeg Pinoy Bilyarista is a group created to gather and highlight the skills of the Filipino pool players living in Winnipeg and the surrounding rural areas of Manitoba-Canada. Originally formed by billiard players, Brando Villordon, Edd de Leon and Rudy Escarlan, the group started small with only ten members just playing regularly. It was not until Elison Duque joined that the members grew in number. He saw the potential to expand the organization to not only play but to also build camaraderie. The group is open to welcome players with different ranking and skill level from within and outside Winnipeg. Gathering regularly at Bourbon Street Billiards downtown, WPB, get to play and even hold tournaments. Just last month, the group successfully held the Winnipeg Pinoy Bilyarista Division A and B Annual 9-ball Open. Winner took exciting prizes courtesy of their generous sponsors: - Elison Brotonel Duque Jr. Elison at Birchwood Honda West for the uniform. - Carl E. Balita Review Center, CBRC Canada , Gilas Healthcare Services, John Bryan Federico and Heavenly Party Needs Restaurant and Catering Services, Idid Villordon , -Maureen Sy for the trophies and medallions. - AVO Gameroom for the $250 worth of gift certificates. - Bourbon Street Billiards " Danny" for the $500 cash added on top of the pot.

CANADA’S FIRST-EVER FILIPINO RESTAURANT MONTH LAUNCHED C
anada’s first-ever Filipino Restaurant Month – a joint project of the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa, Philippine Consulates General (PCG) in Calgary, Toronto, and Vancouver, and the Philippine Department of Tourism (PDOT) – has officially begun last April 1, 2022 and will run until April 30, 2022. “As businesses gradually emerge after two years of living with the health restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Filipino Restaurant Month will promote and support the Filipino Restaurants across Canada.”, as emphasized by Ambassador Rodolfo Robles of the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa. On March 21, 2022, the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary, which spearheaded the Filipino Restaurant Month project along with PDOT-San Francisco, hosted a hybrid press conference to officially announce the Filipino Restaurant Month’s 40 participating restaurants in 7 provinces across Canada and gave media a sneak peek at the prix-fixe menus offered. “It is our hope that the Filipino Restaurant Month will be the start of a movement to mainstream Filipino cuisine in Canada,” remarked Consul General Zaldy Patron during the press conference. Diners at the participating restaurants get to win prizes as well. Just order from the prix fixe menu and you get to enter your name for the local and national draw. Local prizes include $25-$50 vouchers to be given by the participating restaurants and grocery gift cards, while the national prizes include domestic airfare within the Philippines, hotel/resort accommodations, and a day tour for two. Max's Restaurant serves Filipino iconic food with social consciousness Nostalgia is a gentle gesture to enjoy the goodness of Filipino cuisine.
Co-Owner and General Manager, Arnel Alibin, delivering Max's cater food to a healthcare facility.
M
any generations of Filipinos through countless wedding, Christening, birthday and anniversary celebrations have passed by and tasted the famous Max's chicken which is the most iconic food ever served since its founding in 1945, almost after World War ll. "What, Max will have a branch in Winnipeg, wow, that's something to connect as my family has been in Max's restaurant for many celebrations, somehow, a part of our family and I am excited to experience again that sumptuous fried chicken," as one Winnipegger was totally blown-out
upon knowing that Max's Restaurant would have a franchise to open sooner. A big welcome by the Filipinos who had been connected with Max's in many ways, giving them another chance to a dining experience they had in the Philippines, and the only chance to savour the food is when they would go for holidays in Manila. The new Filipino foreign franchise took the Filipinos in Winnipeg with warm anticipation and healing the nostalgic feeling of good food, Max's Restaurant has gone deeper into the hearts of local institutions like World Vision, Victoria General
Hospital Foundation, and Salvation Army, making their involvement a new positive force of good corporate citizenry. The Filipino Journal, with its new column, Pinoy Eatcetera, has eagerly sought JR and Arnel Alibin, members of the Alibin Group responsible to bring the iconic Max's Restaurant to Winnipeg for heart to heart talk: FJ: What motivated you to be in the restaurant business and garnering Max's Restaurant franchise in Winnipeg? Just like any business, due diligence
YOUR FUTURE IS WAITING Business Healthcare Legal Media Technology
and correct business relationships were all factors in bringing Max’s Restaurants global brand to our city. Our family were Winnipeg Ambassadors to the international business community that ultimately led to Max’s Asia & North America picking up Winnipeg as their #6 home in Canada. We aim to contribute in elevating Filipino cuisine in Manitoba and demonstrate that Filipinos are world class entrepreneurs by proudly carrying the Max’s Restaurant brand. FJ: What obstacles have you encountered when you decided to open this franchise, knowing that there are many Filipino restaurants as your competitor? We try not to focus on obstacles but rather find ways to be innovative and confidently tackle challenges as they come. Our family pays homage to our community pioneers in the Filipino restaurant business – Bueno’s, Pampanga’s, Aristrocrat, Le Merage that came before us. We are blessed with the diverse Filipino population in Manitoba. Our mindset is that there is always enough business for everyone. Good businesses thrive when we move and support each other rather than against each other. FJ: Would "food nostalgia" the main driving factor to offer the well-known fried chicken which has been the favorite of the Filipinos since its founding in the 40s? Yes, definitely. Our family have many Max’s Philippines memories & celebration. We hope for our Kababayans will remember their good memories from Max’s Philippines when dining in or celebrating at Max’s Restaurant Winnipeg. FJ: Is this a family company? And who is involved? Just like how Max’s started in the Philippines in 1945, yes this is a family company. We are a family first and good business is a by-product of our group dynamic and having each contribute to our success.

FJ: Being active in the Filipino community and beyond, when did you start being a good corporate citizen, being involved in the community and other charitable endeavours? We are very happy that more and more Canadian-Filipino community leaders and businesses are being recognized compared to a decade ago. Kapuso stars rally behind GMA News and Public Affairs' ‘Dapat Totoo’ advocacy
A
s GMA News and Public Affairs gears up for its most comprehensive coverage of Eleksyon 2022, some of the country’s biggest stars are taking part in its election advocacy campaign “Dapat Totoo.” Bea Alonzo, Rhian Ramos, Jasmine Curtis-Smith, Andrea Torres, Glaiza de Castro, Barbie Forteza, Bianca Umali, Sanya Lopez, Gabbi Garcia, Khalil Ramos, Ken Chan, Rita Daniela, Derrick Monasterio, Thea Tolentino, Aicelle Santos, and Kapuso Primetime King and Queen Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera have all committed their support to this advocacy that promotes the very core value that voters, political aspirants, and news organizations must equally share: truthfulness in mind, in heart, and in actions. Officially announced during
GMA Network’s Eleksyon 2022 Partnerships Launch last November 26, ‘Dapat Totoo’ advocates for everyone – the candidates, the voters, and the journalists – to share in the responsibility for fair and wise decision-making during the elections. New Kapuso, Bea is excited to be part of this campaign. “It feels good and I'm so happy that GMA is actually doing this. They're being proactive ngayong election dahil sa tingin ko may responsibilidad tayo na i-encourage ang bawat Pilipino bilang mga botante na magkaroon ng well-informed decision sa May 9," she says. “Maganda na ine-encourage natin ang bawat botante na maging totoo sa kanilang sarili, maging totoo sa pagdedesisyon nila, maging totoo para sa ating bansa.” Expect the best from GMA
Network in delivering the widest and most comprehensive coverage of Eleksyon 2022 across all platforms together with its 51 partners from the fields of telecommunications, media, education, business, law, and public service.
EPIC COLLABORATION: GMA 7 Rayver Cruz and partners with ABS-CBN'S Star Cinema Julie Anne San Jose:
What's the real score?
K
apuso stars Rayver Cruz and Julie Anne San Jose are seen extra close lately, whether that be in person or in social media. Though both say they are best friends and they click in so many things, netizens see something beyond that. Julie Anne, when asked, remains vague about the real score between her and Rayver, and points to the latter for questions about their potential romantic relationship. In an interview , Julie Ann said that it is better to ask Rayver and better if it comes from him. The Kapuso star shared that she is inspired and very happy at the moment.
After long years of network war, GMA and ABS-CBN recently signed an agreement to license some of Star Cinema's popular movies on the leading TV network. "We are so excited with this partnership. ABS-CBN has our respect as a network and content producer. We know that our audience, most especially Filipinos, deserve the best that Philippine producers can offer," GMA Network Film's
president Annette Gozon-Valdes said in an interview. Meanwhile, ABS-CBN Films managing director Olivia Lamasan, in a statement sent to media, said they welcome the collaboration as they thanked GMA for believing in their films. “We are delighted to have Star Cinema movies be enjoyed by Kapuso viewers through this partnership with GMA. We thank the
network for believing in our films and we welcome this collaboration as a great beginning that will inspire us to continue creating stories that will resonate with more Filipinos,” she said. Following this news, some Kapuso and Kapamilya personalities expressed their excitement about the move including former Kapamilya and now Kapuso personalities, Kim Atienza and Ai-Ai Delas Alas. LIVING WITH CARBON TAX FOR CLIMATE CHANGE! The Republic of Adobo by Rod E. Cantiveros
C
arbon Tax is just like a Sword of Damocles hanging over our heads, giving us more impending harm to family finances at the height of Canada's inflation which rose to a new multi-decade high of 5.7%. Last April 1, 2022, a carbon tax on gasoline of 11 cents was added and dramatically, the price per liter went up to the roof. And take a look at your Manitoba Hydro Bill lately, the Federal carbon tax on Natural Gas is included. In my case, in January 2022, I paid an additional $51.49 plus GST on the carbon tax of 5%, amounting to $2.57, so the total amount added to my bill is $54.06, a big chunk of money for our non-food budget! This amount could have been spent on our daily essentials. And hold on, the gasoline and natural gas carbon taxes increase based on your consumption, that is, when you travel a lot, .11cents are added to your gas bill; and when you heat your home during wintertime, big chunks of money are added to your monthly bill! But what is carbon tax being passed to the consumers who at this time are struggling with high inflation, the highest in 30 years? According to the government's
public documents, a carbon tax is a tax imposed on the amount of carbon emitted into the atmosphere as a result of human activity. The carbon emitted is usually in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2) from burning fossil fuels. The goal of a carbon tax is to create incentives for individuals and businesses to reduce their amount of carbon emissions in order to help curb climate change. A carbon tax may also be referred to as carbon pricing, price on carbon, greenhouse gas tax (GHG tax), or fuel charge, although each of these has slightly varying definitions. And it reveals why higher taxes on carbon-based fuels, so households, and industries can reduce the level of pollution and look to alternatives like solar power and hydrogen engines which have lower impacts on the environment, halting the effects of dreadful climate change. With so much carbon tax money collected, the question is where does Canada's carbon tax money go? The answer: "In the remaining provinces where the federal price on carbon pollution is in effect, the Government of Canada uses approximately 90% of fuel charge proceeds to directly support families

BANFF SUNSHINE VILLAGE REVISITED by Gem and Lita Anis
I
’ve loved alpine (downhill) skiing since the 80’s as a recreational winter pastime after several lessons at Springhill Winter Sports Park at Hwy. 59 North on Oasis Road just fifteen minutes away from our City of Winnipeg. Since then I have known that skiing would be how I would spend some of the best time of my life especially during the long winter months. As passionate
skiers we always wait every winter for the snow as the mercury plummets with the approaching cold. We are the father-and-son buddies and grandfather-and-grandkids buddies skiing together on the slopes, hills and mountains where family memories are also best shared. A family that skiis together stays together! Our family’s passion for alpine
skiing has taken us to the slopes of Breckenridge and Vail Mountains in Colorado, Heavenly and Sugar Bowl Ski Resorts in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, Lutsen and Wild Mountains in Minnesota, Frostfire in North Dakota, Whistler-Blackcomb, Panorama, and Fernie in British Columbia, Lake Louise and Sunshine Village in Alberta. In our Province of Manitoba, go to our two popular ski resorts, the Asessippi and the Holiday Mountain Resorts. With proper training snow skiing whether it is downhill, cross-country, or snowboarding, may not just be a hobby or a sport but can also be a way of life to be physically fit, regardless of how old you are. To be one among the snow wilderness of the mountains you can be in tune with nature, enjoy the fresh air, and that personal feeling of absolute freedom. A short ride to the mountain top is sufficiently enough to proclaim that “I am the king of the world!”. Whether you’re novice or a pro it is helpful to
know about the level of one’s skiing abiliyy: level one (1) means a never ski before; level two (2), a beginner, still learning to make turns in both directions – left or right, and make stops on gentle terrain; level three (3), a novice, able to link snowplow turns on green terrain; and level four (4), intermediate, able to execute parallel turns; and lastly, level 5 (five), the advanced, able to execute strong parallel turns with pole plants. Don’t worry, everyone has to start from the very beginning and it could take many or several lessons before you, falling maybe more a hundred times, can learn the arts of the sport. Knowing one’s skiing level ability determines the terrain where to ski. There are several ski trails difficulty, namely - the easiest trail (represented by colour GREEN circle) , gentle slope , usually wide and groomed; next is the intermediate (represented by colour BLUE square), generally the trail is groomed but more difficult and steeper than beginner’s trail; and third, advanced trail (represented by colour BLACK in diamond shape), the hardest and most difficult, steep and usually narrow, may or may not be groomed. For our family ski destination to Banff Sunshine Village, on 14 March 2022 after a 16-hour long drive through 917 miles (1476 kms.) from Winnipeg, Manitoba. on Trans Canada Highway 1 West with several stops for fuel to both our van and bodies, we (my wife Lita, our son Jimmy and wife Amy, our grandson Jason and girlfriend Jhonna), ended up for a three-night stay at the Tunnel Mountain Resort , Banff, Alberta. Waking up early on the following day we headed to the ski resort. We’ll see you at Sunshine. TRIVIA: Do you know that our very own Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was a former snowboarding ski bum in the 1990’s? He once lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, and snowboarded Whistler Ski Resort regularly for five (5) years.

April 05 - 20, 2022
My crystal ball for the 2022 presidential election PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com WITH 40 DAYS LEFT to Election Day, the campaign season in the Philippines is now on the homestretch. From here onward, everyday counts. While the five remaining and active presidential candidates – Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., Leni Robredo, Isko Moreno, Manny Pacquiao, and Ping Lacson – are busy crisscrossing the archipelago courting voters, many of whom are still undecided who to vote for on May 9, 2022, the bandwagons of Robredo and Marcos Jr. are gathering supporters in all regions. But between the two candidates, Robredo appears to be gaining momentum, particularly among the young voters, many of whom are voting for the first time. Driven – and inspired -- by idealism and good governance, the young voters are overwhelmingly supportive of Robredo whose campaign theme has resonated well with them. Meanwhile, the Leni-Kiko campaign is gaining momentum. Everywhere they go, tens of thousands of enthusiastic young people come out shouting “Leni! Leni!...” And a lot of them wear pink, Leni’s color. It is interesting to note that some groups are supporting Leni in tandem with Sara Duterte. They call themselves RoSa, short for RobredoSara Duterte. Coincidentally, Rosa
or pink is Leni’s campaign color. Another group call themselves LeTi, short for Leni and Tito Sotto, Ping Lacson’s vice presidential running mate. But while Robredo and Bongbong are locked in a battle for survival, the other three presidential candidates wouldn’t give up. Recently, presidential contender Sen. Ping Lacson was offended when vice presidential candidate Lito Atienza, the running mate of presidential candidate Manny Pacquiao, said that he was considering backing out of the race and was hoping Lacson would also quit. Well, being near the tail end of the pack, it might be wise for Lacson to reconsider his candidacy and get behind Bongbong or Leni. The same is true for Pacquiao, who is just a tad behind Lacson. But Pacquiao said that he would withdraw from the race if he gets an “instruction” from God to drop his bid. “Who am I to go against God? If there is conviction, if God shows it to me, I will withdraw even two days before the election or one day before the election. If God has an instruction for me, I will follow,” Pacquiao said. When asked what sign he would seek from God regarding his candidacy, Pacquiao said there were times he dreamed about his

defeats in boxing when he was still a professional boxer. “I shared these things to some people before the fight, and what I dreamed about was what exactly happened during the fight,” he added.
Even in Ilocandia, Leni was able to attract thousands of supporters in Cagayan and Isabela. In Echague, Isabela, 10,000 kakampinks showed up chanting “Awan ti Solid North! (There is no Solid North!).
Survey results Let’s take a look at the results of the latest surveys: Marcos 49.3%, Robredo 21.3%, Moreno 8.8%, Lacson 2.9%, and Pacquiao 2.8%. Isn’t Pacquaio’s poor approval rating a “sign from God” that his crusade isn’t going anywhere? But like in boxing, there are times when the difficulties appear too great and we just throw in the towel. Perhaps, it’s time for Pacquiao to throw in the towel and bow out gracefully. If I were to put my money on who’s going to win, I’d put it on Robredo. As you can see, Marcos had a 60% approval rating in February and Robredo had 16%. Marcos dropped by 10.7% while Robredo increased by 5.3%. The rest basically remained unchanged. But looking at the people who attended the candidates’ campaign rallies, Robredo drew the largest turnout. She also has been bagging political endorsements from governors, congressmen, mayors, and local officials. In other words, Robredo’s bandwagon is attracting a lot of enthusiastic supporters. More than 80 local government officials from several provinces nationwide released a statement endorsing Leni, citing her track record of public service. In the three provinces of Samar, 43 out of 47 mayors endorsed Leni. But what surprised a lot of pundits is Leni’s strong showing in Duterte bailiwicks, with two Davao governors –- Davao del Norte’s Edwin Jubahib and Davao del Sur’s Marc Douglas Cagas IV –- and Congressman Pantaleon Alvarez throwing their support for Leni. This is a very significant win for Leni because Mindanao is the second largest island in the Philippines. Bongbong’s vice presidential running mate, Sara Duterte is President Duterte’s daughter. Indeed, Leni appears to have cracked the fabled “Solid South” of the Duterte clan. Leni has shown the ability to mobilize ground support in the Visayas, Mindanao, and Metro Manila.
Lots of baggage On the other hand, Bongbong is inundated with issues, many of which can be traced back to Marcos Sr.’s dictatorial martial law regime and corrupt government. But the biggest issue is the unpaid tax assessment against the Marcos family, which amounts to P203 billion. Marcos Jr. claims that the tax liability is still pending in court – a statement rejected by presidential candidate Isko Moreno as “all lies,” who brought the issue just two weeks ago. However, Ernesto Ramel, chairman of Moreno’s Aksyon Demokratiko, reiterated that the Supreme Court affirmed in 1997 a Court of Appeals ruling that declared the Marcoses’ estate to have a tax deficiency of P23 billion but ballooned from P23 billion to P203 billion due to interests and penalties 20 years later. In 1999, the Supreme Court had determined that the judgment ordering the Marcos heirs to pay the taxes was “final, executory, and unappealable.” “If Marcos Jr. wins the presidency,” Ramel said, “the Filipino people's P203B will surely disappear like a bubble. It is evident in your actions, words, lies, and excuses. Enough is enough Atty. Vic Rodriguez and Marcos Jr. Give the money to the Filipinos.” The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) confirmed that it sent to the Marcos family in December 2021, a written demand to settle their estate tax liabilities. But the Marcos family refused to pay the estate tax liabilities, which has become a major campaign issue. With the election barely a month away, the P203-billion tax liability is causing a lot of flak from the other candidates, who are now using the tax liability as the number one issue. And no matter how the Marcos camp defends their stand, the issue is spreading like forest fire. Marcos Jr.’s educational attainment is questionable. Marcos

Jr. claimed that he graduated from Oxford University and earned a degree. But in October 2021, Oxford University confirmed that he failed to complete his degree and did not graduate. Yet in spite of Oxford’s denial, Marcos Jr. insisted that he completed his degree. Momentum Like they say, surveys might not be reliable, but turnouts don’t lie. It’s a living manifestation of popular support. At the Leni-Kiko grand rally in Pasig City on March 20, around 130,000 “kakampinks” – a portmanteau that combines “kakampi” (partner) and “pink” (Leni’s campaign color) – attended the grand rally, the largest assembly of Leni’s supporters. A few days later, 80,000 kakampinks attended the Leni-Kiko grand rally in Bohol. A day later, 50,000 kakampinks showed up in Tarlac City. Let’s face it, as in previous Philippine elections, the early frontrunners tripped over some issues that torpedoed their candidacies. It happened to Fernando Poe Jr. in 2004, Manny Villar in 2010, Grace Poe in 2016 and Jejomar Binay in 2016, who both lost to Rodrigo Duterte. While I find it irrelevant to discuss the issues that befell their candidacies (they’re fait accompli), Filipino voters do not like electing controversial candidates. And once they lose their confidence in a candidate, you might as well kiss them good-bye. With numerous controversial issues that haunt Bongbong, would it be fair to say that he’s lost the confidence of the majority of the Filipino people? While people may have forgiven the sins of the father, they will never forget the things that the late dictator did. And for Bongbong to not apologize for his father’s atrocious regime, claiming that his father did not do anything wrong – he even called it the “golden era” -- is an insult to the people’s intelligence. Bongbong’s bias foretells how his presidency would mirror his father’s 20-year bloody rule that had bankrupted the Philippine economy, which led to the People Power Revolution of 1986. My crystal ball for 2022 clearly shows that Bongbong will lose in a landslide.
