More Regions Halt Onsite Classes Due to Intense Heat
As the scorching temperatures reach perilous levels, more areas nationwide are suspending onsite classes, the Department of Education (DepEd) reports.
In various cities and provinces, including Quezon City, Caloocan City, Navotas City, General Santos City, and several others across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, classrooms are shifting to alternative delivery modes (ADM) due to unbearable conditions.
In Pangasinan alone, municipalities like Mangaldan, Sta. Barbara, Mapandan, Calasiao, and San Manuel have already halted onsite classes.
To combat the heat, local governments are implementing adjusted schedules and alternative learning methods. In Caloocan, blended learning is introduced, while in Malabon, classes are canceled
when the heat index surpasses 42 degrees Celsius, shifting to ADM or blended learning at 41 degrees Celsius. Navotas is implementing adjusted class hours, with off-campus breaks during peak heat periods.
In Malolos City, onsite classes from kindergarten to grade 12 in public schools are suspended for two days, prioritizing students' safety amidst the intense heat. Private schools have the discretion to transition to distance learning.
Similarly, Dagupan City in Pangasinan has suspended onsite classes, while Zamboanga City schools adopt modular learning to protect students from exhaustion amid rising temperatures.
Local leaders stress the importance of prioritizing student safety and well-being, implementing necessary measures to mitigate the adverse effects of extreme heat on education.
Vanessa Sarno's Olympic Quest:
Prioritizing Qualification, Eyeing Paris
Philippine weightlifter Vanessa Sarno is meticulously strategizing her path to the Paris Olympics, prioritizing qualification before aiming for Olympic glory. At the ongoing International Weightlifting Federation World Cup in Phuket, Thailand, the former Asian champion is determined to secure her spot in the prestigious event.
Sarno, at 20, understands the significance of every lift as she targets specific numbers to boost her Olympic ranking. With ambitious targets of 110kg in the snatch and 143kg in the clean and jerk, she remains optimistic despite the challenges ahead. Maintaining her current fifth-place ranking is crucial, as only the top 10 in her weight category will advance to the Paris Games after the Phuket meet.
Joining fellow weightlifter Rosegie Ramos, Sarno aims to represent the Philippines in Paris, alongside notable athletes like pole
EJ Obiena and boxer Nesthy Petecio. Despite acknowledging the weight of her aspirations, Sarno remains composed, drawing strength from past failures and learning experiences.
With her sights set on the podium, Sarno understands the substantial improvements needed to compete at the elite level. While the road to Olympic success may be challenging, Sarno's unwavering determination and commitment to excellence propel her forward in pursuit of her Olympic dreams.
Women Advised to Skip Underwear at Home During Summer
House Deputy Majority Leader Janette Garin has recommended that women forgo wearing underwear at home this summer to reduce the risk of fungal infections. Garin, a former Health Secretary, highlighted that women are particularly prone to such infections due to the nature of their intimate area.
She explained that moisture from sweat in the perineal region creates an ideal environment for fungi to thrive, leading to discomfort and itching. While treatable, Garin emphasized the importance of keeping this area dry.
However, Health Secretary Ted Herbosa cautioned against going completely "commando," suggesting that wearing cotton underwear could also help by preventing moisture buildup. Other health officials at a Senate committee hearing recommended cotton underwear
and feminine wash as preventative measures against fungal infections.
Contrary to popular belief, Herbosa clarified that men are less susceptible to such infections due to differences in pH levels in their genital areas.
The advice aims to promote women's health and hygiene during the summer months, emphasizing preventive measures to minimize discomfort and potential health risks.
vaulter PHOTO: CANVAMutiny releases new album after 30 years
One of the purveyors of Heavy Rock/Metal in the Philippines in the 1990s, Mutiny established themselves in the beginning of the decade via gigs at Club Dredd Timog and airplay especially on the radio station DWLA 105.9, which championed independently produced original local music during the era. In 1994, Mutiny released their first album, titled Ang Salamangkéro at Ibá Pang mga Kuwénto, under Polycosmic Records. Its carrier singles, "Hard Luck" and "Salamangkéro," were regular staples on various Rockoriented stations such as LA 105 and NU 107. The music of the tight unit was heavily influenced by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Dream Theater but, of course, with touches of Filipino Classic/Alternative sound rooted in pioneers like Juan de la Cruz Band and Anak Bayan. Mutiny may be regarded as one of the 1990s' Big Five of Philippine Heavy Rock-along with Wolfgang, Razorback, Backdraft, and Dahong Palay.
After a long hiatus and three decades after the release of their first record, Mutiny--currently consisting of Paul Viloria (vocals), Sum Go (bass, vocals), Roy Secillano (drums, percussion), and Raffy Zarzuela (guitars)--return with the muchawaited followup. Titled Engkánto, this independently produced new album contains 10 songs, which include "Liwánag at Dilím," "Mínsan Pa," "Narcíso," "Keep on Rocking," and the enigmatic title-track, which featured a percussive instrument that is shaped like a flying saucer, called the hang drum--something that is rarely heard in Rock music.
My first time to see Mutiny in concert was in 1991, at Club Dredd Timog, when they were still two separate bands: Mutiny in Manila and Anno Domini. My band Half Life Half Death was also a regular at the legendary club during the time, so there were nights when
we three played on the same bill. However, the most significant event in which Mutiny in Manila, Anno Domini, and Half Life Half Death got to perform on the same big stage was 1991 Yamaha Band Explosion, held at Folk Arts Theater; other performers included Mga Anak ng Tupa, The Flys, and Ang Grupong Pendong. It was hosted
by the late Francis Magalona and Paco Arespacochaga; guest bands included AMO Band and Francis M & Hardware Syndrome. It was after the said event when members of Mutiny in Manila and Anno Domini decided to join forces and form Mutiny, and the rest is part of Philippine Alternative music history.
Nancy of Momoland, Known for Hits Like 'Bboom Bboom,' Returns to Philippines for Concert"
Nancy, the lead vocalist and dancer of K-pop group Momoland since their debut in 2016, gained popularity with chart-topping songs such as "Bboom Bboom," "Baam," "I'm So Hot," and "Thumbs Up." The group, which disbanded in early 2023 after a successful seven-year run, enjoyed immense popularity in the Philippines, with many fans noting Nancy's resemblance to actress Liza Soberano.
While Nancy was set to make her acting debut alongside James Reid in the series "The Soulmate Project," the project did not materialize, with the pandemic cited as a primary reason.
Despite this setback, Nancy made a return to the Philippines in November 2023 for a one-night concert alongside Korean artist Lee Seung Gi. Her visit stirred excitement among fans, signaling a potential return to the country's entertainment scene.

The QPAM Adult Learn-to-Skate program just finished its winter fun, and wow, was it amazing!
The Red Rink at Seven Oaks Arena was our home for 10 weeks where lots of people, some whom had never skated before, came to learn. They started a little wobbly, but with help from super nice teachers, everyone got better and better. Mickey Moose also made it out to the final skate with our QPAM Friends and Families!
These instructors were awesome. They showed everyone how to glide smoothly, turn, and even stop without falling. If someone did fall, they were right there to help them up with a smile. In the last couple of weeks, it was super special because we got to spend even more time with these teachers, asking questions and learning cool new tricks.
We all started as beginners, but by the end, we were zooming around the ice like pros. It was so fun seeing how much everyone improved and how happy they were. The program is over now, but the fun and learning we had will stick with us forever. I can't wait to skate again next winter!

In Winnipeg, with its vibrant Filipino community, this month offers a perfect opportunity to dive into the flavors and stories of Filipino cuisine.
Winnipeg's Filipino food scene is a testament to the enduring spirit and cultural heritage of its Filipino population. From savory adobo, tender meat marinated in a harmonious blend of vinegar, soy sauce, and garlic, to the tangy warmth of sinigang soup, the city’s restaurants and eateries bring the essence of the Philippines to the Canadian prairies.
Noteworthy spots like Jemuels Cebu Lechon, known for its authentic lechon, and Jimels Bakery, famed for its pandesal and other Filipino baked goods. These establishments are not just places to eat; they are community hubs where stories and laughter are shared over hearty meals.
April in Winnipeg also sees various Filipino Food Month celebrations, from cooking classes hosted by local chefs eager to share their culinary secrets, to food festivals that transform city streets into vibrant showcases of Filipino culture.
Behind every dish is a story, often recounted by restaurant owners and chefs whose passion for their heritage is evident in their craft. These personal tales add a rich layer to Winnipeg’s culinary tapestry, inviting residents and visitors alike to partake in a cultural exchange that goes beyond the palate.

IÚgoy ng Músika Ultimate New Wave Evolution
n a previous part of this series, I said that I never stopped from listening to New Wave music, ever since I began immersing myself in it in the early '80s, and that was true. But I want to emphasize also that I'm not the type who got stuck in the moment of the genre and its heyday. For one, I simply expand my listening preference as I discover new styles of music. In fact, my record collection is not limited to New Wave; I collect also Punk, Metal, Progressive Rock, Classical, and various '60s music.
More significantly, I don't confine myself with only the '80s phase of genres I love. I try to keep up with

STROLLING THROUGH ATHENS, GREECE - The ACROPOLIS
What is it: The "Acropolis" is a limestone rock standing above Athens, Greece
What is it known for: The "Parthenon", considered as the most famous building on earth
What is there to see: Temple of Athena Nike, Erechtheion, Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the Acropolis Museum
History lives in the Greece's capital city, Athens, most prominently its most famous tourist attraction, the "Acropolis", a testament to the Hellenic civilization, democracy, culture, and architecture. The Acropolis was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
Edgar Allan Poe, the famous American writer, in his poem "To Helen" immortalized Greece in these lines -
"On desperate seas long wont roam, thy hyacinth hair, thy classic face, thy Naiad airs have brought me home, to the glory that was Greece, and the grandeur that was Rome."
The Acropolis with the Parthenon is a constant reminder of the glory of ancient Greece.
by Gem and Lita AnisIn the Greek world the word "Acropolis" means "high city" or "peak of the city". It is typically used to refer to the Acropolis of Athens. It must be noted that every Greek city had an acropolis of its own used as 'religious centres and places of religious worship, forts, and places in which the royal and high-status resided". The Acropolis of Athens is a limestone outcrop which rises some 230 feet (70 metres) above the capital city that sprawls around it. As we're reminded of our high school world history, it was the ruler of ancient Greece during its golden age, Pericles the Great, who led the huge building work project on the Acropolis on which stood temples in contrasting styles. But all of them were destroyed when the Persians conquered Athens in 480 BC including the Parthenon, the crown of the Acropolis of Athens.
Dominating the hill of the Acropolis, the "Parthenon" is a Doric temple constructed between 447 and 432 BC. It is made of about 13,000 blocks of marble, no two the same, said to be a masterpiece
The outer colonnade consists of forty-six (46) columns supporting ninety-six (96) metopes (carved panels) with battle scenes.
The Parthenon was dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena Parthenos ("Athena the Virgin"), In ancient Greek religion, Athena was the goddess of war and wisdom The building used to contain the famous chryselephantine statue of the goddess that was over eleven (11) metres (36 ft.) high and covered in gold.
The entrance to the Acropolis was a splendid monumental gateway called the "Propyleae". Built on a slope, the propylaea has five gates with enormous doors and two wings to either side. To the south of the entrance is the small Temple of Athena Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. With a graceful design and intricate friezes, the temple also showcases the artistic achievement of ancient Greece.
North of the Parthenon is the temple known as "Erechtheion", also known as "Erechtheum". dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. Its notable feature is the Porch of the Caryatids with its beautiful sculpted female figures.
On the southwest slope of the Acropolis lies the majestic theatre, Odeon of Herodes Atticus which is now partially reconstructed.
All the valuable ancient artifacts can be found at the Acropolis Museum which resides on the southern slope of the Acropolis.
To be able to cover the entire historical landmark most probably under the burning midday sun we spent three hours walking and exploring the archaeological site with the aid of a map and brochures bought from individual traders hovering around. Till next time. Keep on travelling.
