President Bongbong Marcos hit the nail's head to remind his people that the Philippines is truly an agricultural country rich in natural resources and human resources, making this truth buried from the mandate of former administrations, making agriculture the last priority by many former governments.

And one must be reminded that agriculture is the basic foundation of industrialization. Look at the United States, and Canada, especially whose lands are utilized not only for local consumption by also for the international market.

President Bongbong Marcos noted: "Agriculture sector must provide a secure and strategic food supply for the Philippine economy to thrive and for the country to grow into an industrialized state."

Look at our neighboring Asian countries specifically Thailand and Vietnam, on how their economies have been thriving and are considered the future industrialized countries.

Now, both countries are working together to develop a rice cartel, with the same mandate as the OPEC Oil Cartel: to control the flow of the products to attain high prices and high profits.

President Bongbong Marcos also emphasized the need for research and development, to review the most controversial Tariffication Law, plan to reorganize the Department of Agriculture,include private sectors in the advancement of agriculture endeavors, and enhance more production of basic needs, like rice and corn and livestock, and other initiatives in fertilizers, irrigation, and market price.

Of all these plans for food security, President Bongbong Marcos has no idea of the importance of a marketing board in agriculture, same as the Canadian Marketing Board which has been the moving engine toward food security and has led to making this country one of the richest countries in the world.

One has to digest the importance of a marketing board, its goals, and objectives, like profitability, production, market development, social responsibility, and innovation.

One must remind President Bongbong Marcos of the relevance and importance as a component of more effective and efficient agricultural endeavors.

Hope someone has to talk to him to ask legislators to add to his mandate this important sector for food security and sovereignty.

A Masterplan must include a marketing board!

Marcos urged LGUs to Full military honors for the late consider PPP FVR - Malacanang President Marcos has urged local government units (LGUs) to consider public-private partnerships (PPP) in financing projects for their constituents.

In a meeting with members of the League of the cities of the Philippines at Malacanang last Aug 2, Marcos encouraged the LGUs to be open to the possibilities of PPPs especially the ones in their areas.

He also mentioned the importance of digitalization in PPP especially in pushing for economic recovery

and digital transformation in the Philippines.

PPP scheme was not maximized during the Duterte administration as there were no projects in place, according to Finance secretary Benjamin Diokno.

Former president Rodrigo Duterte reportedly had signed just six PPPs since 2016, while his predecessor, the late Benigno Aquino III, approved a total of 17 during the latter’s presidency.

On August 9, Malacanang will give the late president Fidel V. Ramos a state funeral with full military honors.

In an interview, Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angles said that the state funeral is a right of the family of a deceased president.

The palace did not confirm though if President Marcos would attend the said funeral.

Ramos died at the age of 94 last July 31st due to complications from COVID-19.

New PNP Chief lays out programs The newly-appointed PNP Chief General Rodolfo Azurin lays out his plans for the Philippine National Police as he took over the leadership of more than 2000 thousand policemen.

Azurin launched his special security framework entitled MKK=K which stand for Malasakti, Kaayusan at Kapayapaan and Kaunlaran, a combination of care, order and peace which shall equate to progress.

There is also the Kasimbayanan

program which stands for Kapulisan, Saimbahan at Pamayanan wherein volunteer church leaders shall help the police nurture relationships with the community.

The police general said that the PNP personnel shall also receive counseling through the squad's weekly interactive meeting program or SWIM. Azurin he would continue the Internal Cleanliness Policy implemented by his predecessor.

Toronto PCG Provides Consular Folklorama Services to Overseas Filipinos in Ambassador General the City of Winnipeg and Japanese Pavilion Sneak Peek Toronto, 13 July 2022 – The officers and staff of the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto led by Consul General Orontes V. Castro conducted consular outreach mission to Overseas Filipinos in the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba from 9 to 12 July 2022 at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel, Winnipeg Airport.

The Consulate General provided passport, dual citizenship, civil registry and notarial services to 1,344 Overseas Filipinos.

Of the 1,344 Overseas Filipinos, the consular team also assisted 152

Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) from the Hylife Foods, Neepawa and those from the Pembina Valley.

Consul General Castro also met with the Knights of RizalWestern Canada Area and the other representatives of Filipino Community organizations (i.e., Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba, Inc. and Friends of Filipino Immigrants in Manitoba) to discuss the Consulate General’s programs and the KOR’s activities in promoting the ideals and teachings of Dr. Jose P. Rizal.

meeting were Consul (honorary) Ronaldo Opina of the Philippine Honorary Consulate in Winnipeg, Sir Felino de Jesus (Interim Western Canada Area Commander), Sir Mike Pagtakhan (former Deputy Mayor and Councillor of the City of Winnipeg), Sir Mohamed Alli (Chapter Commander), Sir Art Domingo (Treasurer), Sir Ray Sator, Sir Eliseo Mones, Sir Kenn and Mrs. Babe Green, Ms. Joanne Viviezca (PFIM), and Ms. Perla Javate (PHCM).

Guerra wins gold for modeling; Balani, silver for musicals; and Sacopla, silver in modeling at WCOPA These three Filipino Winnipeggers shine at the international talent competition in California

he lucky stars are aligned in the universe as the three Filipino Winnipegger delegates outshined some of the international contestants, including some top delegates from the Philippines.

Joseph Guerra, 22, garnered the champion title for Men's Modeling, Casual; gold medal, overall finalist in men's modeling category; and men's casual; silver medals for formal and swimwear. Joseph is currently taking up Physical Education at the University of Winnipeg and is currently under contract with Swish Modelling Management based in Winnipeg.

Joshua Sacopla, 25, Silver medals for formal, casual, and swimwear modeling competition and semi-finalist, men's modeling category. Joshua graduated Biological Science degree from the University of Manitoba. He is a freelance model and a photographer.

Jovelle Balani, 25, currently taking up International Development Course, was awarded silver medals, in vocal Broadway, Pop, and Jazz;

bronze medals for winning voice with self-accompaniment rock and vocal contemporary.

Dante Aviso, Regional Director of WCOPA and Artistic Director of Musica said “ I am very happy and excited of the achievements of Team Canada. In total we have seven delegates in Team Canada and 3 of which came from Winnipeg. Joseph, Jovelle and Joshua did well in their respective categories like Modelling and Singing.

We have tremendous talents in Manitoba and joining a prestigious talent contest like WCOPA will open many opportunities to our budding artists and models. he August long weekend is becoming an annual event for many cyclists in the Padyakers Winnipeg cycling group. The group came together again to take on the hills of Riding Mountain National Park. The 5-hour hour, 130km bike trip from Wasagaming to Dauphin and back. The breathtaking bike ride – both in scenery and hill climbs made for a great day of riding. The group made it to Northgate Trails in Dauphin, Manitoba. Padyakers is a biking club that is based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba and organizes rides throughout

MANITOBA GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES NEW $100-MILLION ARTS, CULTURE AND SPORT IN COMMUNITY FUND Fund will Flow $34 Million This Year to Inspire Manitobans, Support Community Initiatives Across Manitoba

s part of Budget 2022, Recover Together: Strengthen, Invest, Build, the Manitoba government is committing $100 million over three years to create the new Arts, Culture and Sport in Community Fund, Premier Heather Stefanson and Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Andrew Smith announced today.

“We recognize the significant and positive contributions that Manitoba’s arts, culture and sport sectors make to the health and wellbeing of our people and communities, while supporting our economy and creating jobs,” said Stefanson. “As part of Budget 2022, this historic $100-million investment will help inspire Manitobans and foster creativity and innovation in local arts, culture and sports initiatives, while ensuring Manitobans have access to high-quality programming and facilities in their community for generations to come.”

The Arts, Culture and Sport in Community (ACSC) Fund will provide grants to support the arts, culture including heritage and ethnocultural organizations and amateur sport sectors, the premier noted.

“Rising costs are affecting all Manitobans,” said Stefanson.

“This fund will help organizations continue to provide affordable sport, culture and heritage opportunities across the province.”

This year, the fund will flow up to $34 million to community organizations to build capacity

The ACSC Fund will include three programs, with funding guidelines varying among each of the programs to address different

needs and provide support to a broad range of applicant’s eligible projects that will meet one or more of the programs priority areas: • capital projects – organizations will be able to apply for up to $5 million, on a 50-50 cost-sharing basis, for large projects that support the development and renewal of spaces and facilities used for arts, culture, and sport programming and activities; • community celebrations – events, festivals and celebrations, both one-time and recurring, that promote cultural exchanges and are rooted in inclusion and belonging can receive full funding up to $5,000; and • small capital and special initiatives – projects in this stream can receive between 50 and 100 per cent of eligible expenses, depending on the project’s overall cost and will support initiatives such as organizational development opportunities, training,

Or could it be that he isn’t prepared to elevate the priorities that he as chief steward of the ship of state to a level of highest importance?

At this point we can only speculate just like when he refused to participate in the debates during the campaign. He probably surmised that by evading discussion of these important issues, the Filipino people would give him a pass just like before.

But skipping the debates is one thing and evading the issues is another. After he skipped the debates, it left his future direction uncharted. He didn’t have to make promises on how to address the pressing issues like the Covid-19 pandemic, economic downturn, drug problem, inflation, unemployment, health care, rising prices of gas and rice, and recession.

Unlike his predecessor, former president Rodrigo Duterte, who said that he’d solve the peace and order situation and how he’d get rid of the drug and criminality problem in six months, Marcos did not mention them at all. He did not talk about the issue of justice and rule of law, which Duterte pursued with vigor, eliminating 27,000 people as a result in the campaign against drugs, which was Duterte’s pet project. He did not talk about how he is going to fight corruption in government.

Needless to say, by not addressing them, he did not take responsibility and own accountability.

“Simplicity, economy, and efficiency” He issued Executive Order No.1, which abolished the Presidential AntiCorruption Commission (PACC) in the guise of achieving “simplicity, economy, and efficiency.” But instead it created another layer of bureaucracy, the Deputy Secretary for Legal Affairs (DESLA), which has its hands already full of cases investigating internal and external legal matters.

He did not mention appointments to the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) and Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) that is tasked to recover the ill-gotten wealth of his family

and their cronies. The PCGG was formed in 1986 in the aftermath of the People Power Revolution that ousted the Marcos dictatorship and ushered in the government of Cory Aquino. It was tasked solely to recover the ill-gotten wealth of the Marcos family and their cronies.

Cristina Palabay, secretarygeneral of human rights group Karapatan, also noted that there was no mention of “press freedom, disinformation, death penalty, and failed domestic accountability mechanisms.”

Justice and rule of law Former Senate minority floor leader Franklin Drilon said the Marcos government should not “sweep under the rug” issues concerning justice and rule of law, saying that a strong justice system could also boost investors’ confidence.

But Marcos raised some concerns among business circles when he vetoed HB 7575 creating the Bulacan Airport Special Economic Zone and Freeport adjacent to the proposed airport city in Bulacan province.

It is expected that his veto would drive foreign investors away. Not good for his fledgling presidency.

Marcos, surprisingly, included in his legislative agenda the revival of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. (ROTC). Surmise it to say, the ROTC could be called upon in cases of national emergency. But short of invasion by a foreign power, the ROTC need not be activated and armed. Unless of course a civil war erupts between the communist New People’s Army (NPA) and the Muslim separatists in Mindanao, in which case the ROTC could be armed and sent to the troubled region. But between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police who have a combined strength of 250,000 armed personnel, I don’t think the ROTC needs to be deployed in the war zone.

Overkill But that just shows Marcos’ paranoia of national turbulence. A case in point was during the State of the Nation Address (SONA) last July 25, he ordered 21,000 armed personnel to guard the National Museum of Fine Arts where the swearing-in occurred. It was overkill. It shows how he fear for his life. Besides, the protestors were not allowed near the building. They had to hold their rally miles away in Quezon City.

Many Filipinos are apprehensive about the prospect for martial law under Bongbong Marcos. Although it’s unlikely that he’d declare martial law soon, a lot of people are expecting him to gradually undermine the existing system by

changing the law, little by little.

One of the laws that he needs to address is taxation. When he was elected, he commented that the government does “not have good collection on taxes,” citing the influence of corruption.

“The economy of the Philippines will simply not succeed, we cannot collect duties, tariffs, etc through the BOC and we do not have good collection on taxes both on the national and local level. Hindi talaga uubra. The numbers don’t match,” Marcos said.

He added, “So that’s why it’s very, very important and we have to at the very least reduce the corrosive influence of corruption in government as a general rule,” he added.

Marcos’ unpaid estate tax Last March, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) confirmed that it sent a demand letter to the Marcos family to settle their unpaid estate

tax worth P203 billion.

When asked about corruption in the BIR, Marcos Jr., consistent with the family’s historical denialism, said that past corruption in the agency would be forgotten. Hmm… Does that mean that he would not pursue the collection of the Marcos unpaid estate taxes? He said that it was not under his watch. “I was not in charge at the time. Now that I

am governing, there shouldn’t be corruption anymore. Wait until the taxpaying people stop paying their taxes, then you can say that Mr. President.

At the end of the day, I believe President Marcos Jr.’s SONA was short on objectives. I wish him all the best and may the good Lord guide him on the righteous path in governing the Filipino people.

GMA Thanksgiving Gala Highlights

Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, one of the emcees at the Binibining Pilipinas 2022, has finally spoken about the issue following the incident that happened at the Binibining Pilipinas Pageant last July 31st at the Araneta Coliseum, where there was a long pause before they announced the last award.

Speculations from the netizens circulated that there could have been a mix-up with the awards.

The following day, on her Instagram account, Catriona released a statement saying that she and co-emcee Bb Pilipinas Grand International 2016 Nicole Cordoves

announced the winners accordingly based on the titles printed on the individual title cards as handed by SGV and Co. "Gray further stated: As former candidates ourselves, we understand what the girls go through and would, therefore—without a second thought—correct any errors, if any were made. But as already explained, SGV & Co. partner and representative Mr. Ocho himself confirmed the validity of the results."

Gray closed her statement by encouraging the people to celebrate the queens who are wearing their rightful crowns.

The GMA Thanksgiving Gala is probably one of the biggest events of the year.

With the theme "old hollywood," the night was a celebration also of GMA Network's 72nd Anniversary.

The biggest and brightest Kapuso stars walked the red carpet in black or white color.

New Kapuso Bea Alonzo, Xian Lim, Beauty Gonzales and Richard Yap were happy to have

been part of the event.

Former Kapuso actors also showed up like Christine Reyes and Billy Crawford who said that "once a Kapuso, always a Kapuso."

MOUNT RUSHMORE, “SHRINE OF DEMOCRACY”

estled into the Black Hills near Keystone, South Dakota, USA, and rising above sea level at 1,737 metres (5,200 feet) are the indestructible granite faces of four American Presidents - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, respectively, symbolising the birth and trials of the first 150 years of American history, its growth, development and preservation.

This majestic enormous memorial is spectacular to see and to behold, both as a landmark and as a wonderful work of art. We’re awed by the size of the sculpture (each head is as tall as a six-story building)! Each face is approximately 60 feet in height and with noses longer than 20 feet. The mouths are also about 18 feet wide and each of the eyes are about 11 feet.

The full sculpture is 185 feet across and 150 feet tall.

The massive structure was conceived

by South Dakotan historian Doane Robinson in 1923 as a way to attract more people in the Black Hills of the State of South Dakota (today, about 3 million people visit Mount Rushmore each year). He consulted and contracted sculptor Gutzon Borglum from St. Charles, Idaho, who chose Mount Rushmore, the highest peak in the area, because it faced the southeast exposure to the morning sun; he wanted natural lighting on the face throughout the day. (Mount Rushmore was named after a New York lawyer Charles Rushmore who was in the Black Hills in 1885 researching mining claims for mining companies.)

Sculptor Borglum preferred carving the presidents so that the sculpture would be of national significance instead of carving figures of Western personalities like Lewis & Clark, Buffalo Bill Cody, or Chief Red Cloud.

He selected these four executive heads because from his perspective they represent the most significant epochs in the history of the United States.

For Borglum, Washington (17321799) represented the birth of the American nation since he was the Father of the republic being the first President. Thomas Jefferson (17431826) represented the expansion of US territory since he was largely responsible for the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. Abraham Lincoln (18091865) embodied the preservation of the union of states in confronting the challenges of the Civil War and equality of all citizens. Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) represented the development of the country fulfilling the expansionist dream by linking the great oceans with Panama Canal. He signifies the 20th-century role of the United States in world affairs.

Amidst delays due to weather and interrupted funding, Borglum’s crew of 400 hard-rock miners carved for fourteen (14) years , beginning in 1927 and ending in 1941. In 1939 when Theodore Roosevelt was dedicated modern plumbing and lighting were installed at the memorial.

Today, Mount Rushmore still stands as a symbol of the US dedication to freedom and democracy.

Folklorama is finally here! After two summers of anticipation, Canada’s longest-running cultural festival is back. The ambassadors, dancers and volunteers from the 24 participating Folklorama Pavilions are beyond excited to open their doors and welcome you back with open arms. Hinode Taiko drummers were among the talented performers showcasing their talent for guests visiting the Japanese Pavilion at Petrus Hall this week. Week 1 of Folklorama wraps up this Saturday and a new set of Folklorama pavilions open up on Sunday night.
