Eight associations joined and showcased their masterpiece Christmas lanterns or parol that were absolutely stunning. For Filipinos, parol will always be a symbol of hope even during the darkest nights. IATF approves new testing, Senator Bong Go withdraws 2022 presidential bid quarantine rules for non-red list not want the 76-year-old Duterte to strain himself just to campaign for him in 2022. countries inbound travellers
O
n Thursday, December 2, 2021, the IATF approved new testing and quarantine protocols for international travelers coming from countries outside the red list. Starting Friday the new protocols will be effective. Fully vaccinated individuals are required to present negative results (RT-PCR) tests conducted 72 hours before leaving the country of origin. They will still undergo facility-based quarantine and take another test on the “fifth day” upon arrival when they arrive in the Philippines. Even if their result is negative, they will have to continue their quarantine at home until the 14th day. For international travelers who have already arrived and are undergoing quarantine, they shall continue to follow the protocols that were in place when they arrived, the task force added. Countries not on the red list were only encouraged to conduct selfmonitoring after receiving a negative swab test result previously. As for the partially vaccinated, unvaccinated,
or whose vaccination status cannot be independently validated, they will also have to present negative RT-PCR test results taken 72 hours before leaving the country of origin. The same facility-based quarantine protocol applies but they will take their next RT-PCR on the “seventh day” instead of the fifth. No matter the result, they must undergo home quarantine until the 14th day. The IATF said on testing and quarantine of minors, the children or adolescents will follow the rules that apply to the guardian accompanying them.
PRRD’s choice in the 2022 presidential elections, Senator Bong Go, announced his withdrawal from the race. On the sidelines of Bonifacio Day celebrations in San Juan City reading a prepared statement, Go made the announcement in a chance interview on Tuesday, November 30, 2021. Go said he
would be withdrawing his 2022 bid citing his family’s resistance to a presidential run and how his heart and mind were contradicting his actions. Echoing his earlier pronouncements Go added,” For now, I’m ready to sacrifice for the country and President Duterte, perhaps it’s not time for me to be president”. The senator said he did
Convicted ex-cop Jonel Nuezca dies inside NBP
Hospital by his cellmates at 6:30 pm and was pronounced dead at the Bilibid hospital at 6:44 pm on Tuesday, November 30, 2021. Chaclag said Nuezca was with a fellow convict walking outside their dormitory when he collapsed. A launched investigation by authorities is ongoing to determine if there is foul play in the incident, adding that Nuezca’s remains will undergo an autopsy. Chaclag added. Jonel Nuezca is the latest high-profile convict to die inside the Bilibid, hounded lately by mysterious deaths. In December 2020 Nuezca shot and killed mother and son Sonya and Frank Gregorio in Paniqui, Tarlac, over a neighborhood dispute, the shooting all caught on video. At the time of the incident, Nuezca was off-duty, reigniting debates on abusive policemen and the failure of the PNP to discipline its members. It turned out Nuezca had faced charges before but kept his job. Nuezca’s trial was swift, and by August 2021, he was convicted of murder and sent to Bilibid. Nuezca is the latest highprofile Bilibid convict to die inside the national penitentiary, which has long been hounded by controversies.
Phreatic eruption at Pinatubo crater, Phivolcs confirms Reported Tuesday afternoon November 30, 2021, by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) a "weak explosion" at Mt. Pinatubo has been confirmed as a phreatic or steam-driven explosion. Phivolcs earlier said they were assessing the recorded explosion, which produced a plume, to determine its source. The agency also said in an update posted on social media DOST-Phivolcs confirms that a phreatic eruption occurred at Pinatubo Crater between 12:09 and 12:13 p.m. based on visual reports of an eruption plume and seismic, infrasound and satellite detection. There has been no report of ashfall from the event but Phivolcs warned the public against going
near Mt. Pinatubo, and urged local governments to prevent entry as "shallow phreatic or hydrothermal explosions such as the event of today can occur without warning." The event was likely driven by shallow hydrothermal processes beneath the edifice," Phivolcs said. Considering that there has been very low seismic activity in the volcano in the past days and low diffuse volcanic CO2 flux measured at Pinatubo Crater Lake and high infrasound over seismic energy released by the eruption. According to the US Geological Survey, in June 1991 when Mt. Pinatubo last erupted; it was one of the largest volcanic eruptions, killing over 800 people.

Duterte’s long-time aide, The senator had made earlier hints that he was mulling withdrawing his candidacy, saying he was in a “state of shock” over the developments ahead of 2022. He had first filed to run as vice president under the ruling PDP-Laban Cusi faction but withdrew that candidacy after Duterte’s daughter, Sara Duterte, announced she was running for vice president under Lakas-CMD. He eventually filed as president under Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan via substitution. Go remains a national official as his term as senator ends in 2025. As of posting, PDP-Laban, which Duterte chairs, has yet to release a statement on Go’s withdrawal.

Reflect on your own childhood
W
hen we think of our childhood, it is possible for us to remember habits or rules of our parents that irritated us. The vast majority of us thought at some point "No way I'm going to do this when I have children". And yet, when it is our turn to educate the youngest ones in the house... we repeat the same things that annoyed us so much. Why is that? Most of what we learn as children we learn from our parents. The way they raised us, for example, is deeply ingrained in our subconscious. If my parents were very demanding and disciplinary with me, I am likely to think that this is the best way to raise a child. Even if I didn't like it when I was growing up. "But look, I turned out fine." Empathy is Parenting 101.
We must be able to put ourselves in our children's shoes, to think about how our behavior as parents may affect them. We have all been children at some point. Even though we are now adults with the responsibility of raising our children, we can reflect on our own childhood experiences. Reflection has never hurt anyone... I think... You need to reflect on your own childhood. Look inward. Think about why you behave the way you do. Why don't you let your son date that girl? You used to get quite irritated when your parents tried to control your private (especially, your romantic) life. Why do you show disappointment when your son gets an A rather than an A+? Don't you remember when you thought nothing you did was
good enough for your parents? Didn't that feeling chase you throughout your entire academic journey? Even if the ways of parenting are ingrained in us, introspection and reflection are the first steps toward becoming the best parents we can be.
Sometimes we need a little help. Our partner can give us some positive tips. Or perhaps a friend who also has children. Social support is always essential and necessary, especially in cases like parenting. But the most important aspect lies within ourselves. We want the
best for our children, and sometimes we may not be able to give it to them because of our childhood. The process of understanding ourselves and healing can be a long, rollercoaster ride. But it is imperative that we do it so that our children can be happy and develop fully.
Shakespeare in the Ruins (SIR) extends digital run of “Shakespeare’s Will” until December 12 (December 1; Winnipeg, Manitoba) -- Inspired by the spirit of the holidays, SIR’s digital production of the award-winning show Shakespeare’s Will will be available a little longer for online viewing! Audiences will now have until Sunday, December 12th, to watch this beautiful, funny and incredibly poetic meditation on Love, Loss and solo parenting, written by one of Canada’s most celebrated playwrights, Winnipeg-born Vern Thiessen. Artistic Director, Rodrigo Beilfuss, says, “This is a very special project that has been made possible through the remarkable Canada Council for the Arts ‘Digital Now’ initiative. Their support means we can celebrate what is at the very heart of digital theatre: accessibility. Folks can watch this gorgeous screen version of the play from the comfort of their homes; and what’s more: they have the option to watch it with subtitles in different languages! We are so happy to have commissioned six translations of this moving script, expanding the international reach of Canadian theatre. Plus, Debbie Patterson’s work is the stuff of dreams. You’ll be mesmerized by the intimacy and the magnetism of her performance. And now you
have more time to catch this great work of art!” Patterson plays Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare’s wife. Anne is mourning her husband, avoiding reading his will and, instead, she unpacks their whole relationship before our eyes – from the day they met to the day he died, revealing cheeky secrets and passions. This production makes imaginative use of a style of storytelling called ‘object theatre’, as multiple characters are ‘played’ by rocks and sticks as if they were lively puppets, all skillfully manipulated by Patterson; and a large sand box (from where the characters emerge) serves as the inventive design centrepiece. You have never seen theatre quite like this before; and you will never think of Shakespeare quite in the same away. “Thiessen takes the sketchy outline of Hathaway’s life out from under her husband’s formidable shadow and creates a gem of a play that’s part fact, part fiction, and pure theatre.” — Quill & Quire In further celebration of accessibility, tickets are PAY WHAT YOU CAN: $1or $5 or $10 dollars + service charges. Marian is rumored as one of the judges in Miss Universe 2021 Fans speculate that Marian Rivera will serve as a judge in the competition after she called herself “honored.” The Kapuso star appeared to have teased that she will be a judge for Miss Universe 2021 after she showed a photo of herself looking stunning in a red off-shoulder dress for a glam shoot by Mark Nicdao on her Instagram page on December 1, 2021. “Honored,” Rivera said, accompanied by a crown and universe emoji. Meanwhile, Rivera’s husband, Dingdong Dantes, also appeared to have hinted at the supposed judging stint as he greeted the actress, “Miss u….” Will the actress be part of the selection committee in the 70th Miss Universe pageant? If Rivera is indeed going to be part of Miss Universe 2021’s selection committee, she would not be the first Filipino

to take on the role. Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach was chosen as a judge in 2017, while Broadway star Lea Salonga was part of the panel of judges in Miss Universe 2011. Neither Rivera nor the Miss Universe Organization has confirmed whether the actress is going to be part of the beauty pageant’s selection committee. The 70th Miss Universe pageant will be held in Israel on Dec. 12. The panel of judges is usually announced ahead of the competition’s finals.
John Lloyd and Bea's first comeback project released
The comeback of their beloved love team just became more imminent than ever now that Bea Alonzo and John Lloyd Cruz are both with GMA Network. In an online interview on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, with Nelson Canlas on "24 Oras," Tuesday, the two said they're just waiting for the right moment to work
together on a huge project again. It's just a matter of time for that to happen. John Lloyd and Bea reunited in a comeback movie titled "One True Pair" for the fastfood chain they are endorsing on December 1, 2021. This is their first project together after five years. The actor inked a partnership with
GMA Network four months after Bea signed a contract to be a Kapuso. While waiting for their much anticipated possible comeback film, they're working on their own projects. Bea is set to start shooting for her first movie with Alden Richards titled "Special Memory," the Philippine version of the Japanese series "Pure Soul," which was also remade into the Korean movie "A Moment To Remember." John Lloyd, meanwhile, has already started shooting for his sitcom with GMA Network.
Miss Universe PH Jodi and Zanjoe show a glimpse of Beatrice Gomez’s missing “The Broken Marriage Vow” trailer luggage was found Upon her arrival to Israel, Miss Universe Philippines Beatrice Luigi Gomez experienced a brief luggage mishap after one of her suitcases went missing on her way to Jerusalem. Miss Universe Philippines communications director Voltaire Tayag revealed that one of Gomez’s suitcases was not taken to her room when she reached Jerusalem, though all were accounted for at the airport in Tel Aviv. Tayag then explained that when Gomez tested negative for the coronavirus and was allowed to leave her room, she was told by staff to personally check the hotel’s luggage room for her suitcase. Tayag also showed Gomez in a tracksuit posing next to Miss Thailand Anchilee Scott-Kemmis. He said “We told her to just wear the tracksuit and the sash since there was no official activity and she’s only checking her luggage. It so happened that Anchilee was there and she was asked to take a photo with her,” stressing that the tracksuit is not for any official activity in the
pageant. “So, that tracksuit was not an OOTD. I hope that before anyone jumps to conclusions, blames people, throws out negativity, knows that there is usually a plausible explanation,” he added. Fortunately, it appears the beauty queen’s luggage has been found “Thank you for all the prayers. Thank you to the Philippine Embassy in Israel for helping us reach out to the hotel,” Tayag said.
Released on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, in the first teaser of ABS-CBN’s highly anticipated drama “The Broken Marriage Vow.” The teaser shows the first glimpse of Jill Ilustre (Jodi Sta. ast November 28, while the weather outdoors was warm and nice, it was steaming hot inside Raffy's Cafe as singing and dancing ruled over the annual Christmas Party of the Quezon Province Association of Manitoba (QPAM), members seeing each other face-to-face in an event after almost two years. Led by their hardworking president, Maggie Chan Urbano, members were asked to come in their "ugly" Christmas sweater. It was a night of "free-for-all." Even the " D Sintonads" had a blast on stage, singing and dancing, no matter what the tempo was. Everyone mobbed the dance floor as soon as Orlie Merluza showered the group with 25 cent-coins, scattering on the floor where busy feet were rocking with the music. Every performer received some " surprizes." There was also a gift exchange shared by those who participated in the circle of giving and sharing. The brunch Christmas party was held at Raffy's Cafe owned by Raffy Salvatus Ramiro, another Quezonian from Lucena City. Alden Novallasca, one of QPAM's board of directors, emceed the most fun-filled annual Christmas party . It was a five-star fun up to the last minute of the event. continued on page 11 ►

Network Your Way To Your Next Job

re you a technology professional looking to take the next step in your career? If so, there are several ways to network your way into a new job. This guide will provide tips for joining and participating in industry communities as well as how to use social media sites like LinkedIn and Twitter to build relationships with peers. Landing a job in today's market is not easy, and it can be very daunting. Consider how one corporate job will attract over 250 resumes; however, only one candidate will be offered the position. Typically your resume alone does not get you far- sometimes other applications are what sets yourself apart from others vying for that same spot on an employer’s list (and by using them effectively with appropriate networking or namedropping skills). It takes more than just good resume - you also need referrals! Sacrifices, as a Response to Life's Challenges Ano'ng Masasabi Mo? (Readers' Column) by Kathryn Valladolíd Ebrahim
"One life is all we have and we live it as we believe in living it. But to sacrifice what you are and to live without belief, that is a fate more terrible than dying."--Joan of Arc What is it to sacrifice? Sacrifice may be defined as "the act of giving up something that you want to keep especially in order to get or do something else or to help someone." Many say that they make little sacrifices here and there sometimes. For a secure human being, the goal of the sacrifice is oftentimes geared towards others: giving to charity, lending money, providing temporary food and shelter, etc. On a personal basis, sacrifice is done in fulfilment of goals that would benefit the self: a Louis Vuitton bag, diamond earrings, replacement vehicle for the "old reliable," gourmet food, etc. Apparently, there are many instances where we can exercise sacrifice. Whether one is forced into
the situation or willing enough, sacrifice involves spending additional time, money, and energy to fulfill a particular goal. Sacrifice is not an attack on one's happiness. On the contrary, sacrifice itself may actually be brought about by the sense of happiness that pervades in a person by the simple act of giving; all the more when he has the financial capacity to give. Hence, the person sacrifices a little amount to those in need. When it comes to long-distance relationships, it can be argued that in order for it to work--more so with two people occupying different time zones--despite time and distance, terms of the relationship set by the couple should still be exercised. Given that communication is inherently virtual, how could one be with the other in real time? While it may be true that both accepts the other in their totality including the work environment each one choses to be involved in, what is one of the key factors that could glue the couple together aside from tolerance?

time in exchange for emergency and recovering patients. Short of saying, the pandemic required people, in general, to make certain sacrifices. Sacrifice, after all, has many facets. Truly, our daily life poses a plethora of challenges. Whatever response we choose to alleviate these is vital to the preservation of the lives of others, which are entwined with ours either by consanguinity or by our choice affiliation with them. Often we make sacrifices for a myriad reasons and in fulfillment

I believe, in making an effort to cope with time and distance, each one reaches out to the other by making a certain amount of sacrifice for them to stay together. One extends her time to catch the other's waking hours. The act serves as an assurance that It could prove to be a stretch at the start of the relationship, which makes it all worthwhile. In a two-income family, both parents make sacrifices for the sake and comfort of their children. They make sure that they are given exceptional education, ample food and clothing, and a good roof above their shoulders. What entails this sacrifice? Apportionment of their salary according to utilities, personal comforts, and most especially the needs of their children. It means also giving up excessive spending so that they could have sufficient savings for unforeseen expenses in the future. The world's current war on COVID has proven to be challenging for most people and continues to test the humanistic sacrifice in terms of having to thrive and still be able to fulfill life's basic needs. Different ways and means a human being exercises his sense of survival and life preservation is continually being observed. While most companies have shutdown, many resorted to creating virtual channels to showcase their knowledge and talents not solely for personal income but also for the benefit of others. Along with this, and evidently so, frontliners in the medical field have sacrificed much of their personal and family
of personal and social goals. With the end goal in mind, we choose to make certain sacrifices because we know that, whether we are forced to make that sacrifice or not, our happiness is still the end all and be all of what we have worked for and decided to engage in.

Ultimate New Wave Evolution (& closely related styles) part 1
P
reviously, I featured remarkable '60s-forming bands associated with Sunshine/Psychedelic/ Bubblegum Pop. Starting this issue, I will delve again on New Wave, which I already did in the past; but this time, I will focus on albums classifiable under it that I have copies of in my record collection. If you are a big fan of this type of music, or interested in exploring its roots and development through actual releases--from its humble beginning, heyday, to contemporary times--then you may regard this as a useful reference. Of the countless CDs and vinyl records in my collection, the
following are some of my favorites in the genre. They are also among the most common and popular. * Culture Club - Colour by Numbers (1983) * Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair (1985) * Spandau Ballet - Parade (1984) * Depeche Mode - Some Great Reward (1984) * Duran Duran - Rio (1982) * Big Country - The Crossing (1983) * China Crisis - Working with Fire & Steel (1983) * a-ha - Hunting High and Low (1985)
Defenders of Sierra Madre PEREZCOPE by Perry Diaz PerryDiaz@gmail.com
S
ince 1999, a World War IIera navy ship lay aground off Ayungin Shoal (Second Thomas Shoal), an uninhabited atoll near the Kalayaan group of islands in the Spratly archipelago. The ship, BRP Sierra Madre, was purposely grounded by the Philippine Navy to serve as an outpost in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) after China had grabbed and occupied the Panganiban Reef (Mischief Reef) in 1995. Since then, China had progressively fortified Panganiban Reef with permanent buildings, naval guns, and a detachment of military personnel. To defend the Sierra Madre, a detachment of nine marines is rotated every five months. The grounded – and rusting – Sierra Madre is used as their makeshift garrison. With no landing strip on Ayungin, the only way to bring troops and food rations to Sierra Madre is by sea. Some years ago, China unilaterally imposed a 60-mile restricted “no entry” zone around Panganiban Reef, which is within the Philippines’ 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). That placed Ayungin Shoal, which is only 25 miles southeast of Panganiban Reef, inside the restricted “no entry” zone. Since Ayungin Shoal is only 105
miles from Palawan, and within the Philippines’ EEZ, it would give China a geostrategic foothold on Philippine territory if China took possession of Ayungin. And because of its strategic location, Ayungin is considered the gateway to Recto (Reed) Bank, a proven oil- and gas-rich region coveted by energy-hungry China. And if China had taken Ayungin, her next logical step would be to take full control of the oil and mineral-rich Recto Bank. In early 2014, China started blockading Ayungin to put pressure on the Philippines to abandon the Sierra Madre. On March 9, 2014, Chinese Coast Guard ships blocked two attempts by the Philippines to resupply the garrison. Three days later, the supplies were airdropped. But the troops persevered and continued their vigilance in defending the Sierra Madre. China’s claim On March 13, 2014, China held a media briefing in Beijing to further her claim on Ayungin. According to spokesperson Hong Lei, then incoming President Joseph “Erap” Estrada made an “unequivocal commitment” to China in 1999 that the Philippines would tow away the grounded ship. Hong also said that Estrada’s successor, President

Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, reiterated Erap’s “solemn commitment” in 2003. Since then, China had aggressively intruded and conducted military activities in the West Philippine Sea despite the 2016 Permanent Court of Arbitration’s ruling that debunked China’s nine-dash line claim in the West Philippine Sea. Fast forward to 2021. China once again repeated its claim. On November 16, it sent coast guard ships to block and it used water cannons to spray a powerful stream of water at two Philippine boats carrying supplies to troops deployed to the Sierra Madre. The water cannon attack prompted the Philippine government to order China’s ships to back off and warned that the US-Philippine Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) covers the supply ships. Consequently, U.S. and Philippine military officials held initial talks to assess the future of their countries’ 70-year MDT, including revising it in a possible move, which made China wary. The 1951 treaty commits the United States and the Philippines to come to the aid of the other in case of an attack. U.S. officials have repeatedly assured their Philippine counterparts that they would honor their treaty obligations if Philippine forces, ships, and aircraft come under attack in the disputed South China Sea or anywhere in the world for that matter. Recently, China raised the ante by demanding that the Philippines removes the grounded BRP Sierra Madre from Ayungin Shoal, saying it should “honor its commitment.” But Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said there is no such agreement. But China said that its “position remains unchanged." However, there is no record that either Estrada or MacapagalArroyo had ever made any commitment

to remove the Sierra Madre. But granted that they made such a commitment, it was never executed during their terms of office; thus, any subsequent president can negate such commitment, which makes one wonder: Why didn’t China force the removal of the Sierra Madre? Was it because the MDT was and is still in force? And since the Sierra Madre is still an active commissioned Philippine warship, either party could invoke it? Obviously, China doesn’t want to provoke Uncle Sam. Life on the Sierra Madre Meanwhile, life on the Sierra Madre goes on. The marines keep themselves busy by diving, fishing, and watching DVDs. Their only communication with the outside is through a radio communication system and satellite phones. Occasionally, they have contact with Filipino fishermen who would swap DVDs with them. What these marines are doing is over and above their normal duties and responsibilities. Under constant threat of Chinese invasion, they’re prepared to fight to the death. They’re also aware that if they were attacked, they would surely perish defending their garrison. Indeed, they’re like the Texans who defended the Alamo in 1836 in a fiercely fought 13-day battle against Mexican President General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna’s army. Outnumbered and outgunned, the approximately 250 Texans fought the 1,500 Mexicans to the last man. Their brutal defeat inspired and rallied the Texans under Sam Houston, who went on to defeat Santa Anna a month later. It is interesting to note that back in April 9, 2014, then President Benigno Aquino, spoke during the
FilipinoJournal.com
commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) in Mt. Samat in Bataan. He paid tribute to the brave marines of the Sierra Madre who are defending their nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity just like the American and Filipino soldiers who made a heroic stand in Bataan to defend the Philippines from Japanese invasion in World War II. “Day and night, on board the stranded BRP Sierra Madre, their dedication was anchored on keeping watch over and safeguarding our territory. This is why, together with our veterans, soldiers like them are among those we honor today. The Filipino nation salutes all of you,” Aquino told the marines. If Gen. Douglas MacArthur were alive today, he would be smiling listening to Aquino’s praise for the marines. After all, it was MacArthur himself who immortalized the bravery of Filipino soldiers during the Korean War when he declared: “Give me ten thousand Filipino soldiers and I will conquer the world.” A few brave marines But for Aquino, the nine marines are all he needed to stand guard in a remote and lonely garrison in the middle of West Philippine Sea surrounded by marauding Chinese naval vessels. But just like the 300 Spartans who defended Thermopylae in 480 BC against the invading 150,000 Persians, the nine Filipino marines wouldn’t have a chance of surviving a Chinese assault. But like the 250 Texan volunteers who gave their lives to defend the Alamo, and the 300 Spartan warriors who died defending Thermopylae, the nine Filipino marines defending Ayungin are ready to lay down their lives for their Inang Bayan. These are the defenders of Sierra Madre.

Cuba, “Pearl of the Antilles” by Gem and Lita Anis Capital & largest city: Havana Area: 42,426 sq. mi. Population: 11.33 million Language: Spanish Unit of Currency: Cuban peso Cuba is a beautiful and fascinating country – geographically, historically, culturally, and musically. Once the mecca for American wealthy elite, Cuba is still very touristy with snowbirds flocking to its sugary white sandy beaches for sun, surf and sand or seeking new adventures and discoveries at the republic’s tiny villages, towns and cities. Cuba is an island nation in the West Indies lying just about ninety miles south from the United States shores of Florida. It is the largest island in the Caribbean and the 17th largest in the world by land area. The country comprises the Cuban archipelago of 3,715 islands, islets and cays (low islands). The island of Cuba itself is the largest in the chain. High mountains, rolling hills and lowland plains mostly planted with sugar cane, coastline fringed with sandy beaches and coral reefs characterize the country’s landscape. Cuba is warm and sunny all year long. Cubans call their country the “Pearl of the Antilles” because of its
West Indian island charm and beauty. On 28 October 1492 Genoese explorer Christopher Columbus discovered Cuba on his first voyage to the New World when he landed in the province of Holguin at northeastern coast of the island. The explorer, claiming the island for the Kingdom of Spain, declared, “It is the most beautiful land ever seen by the human eyes”. Columbus named the land “Isla Juana” but later would be called “Cuba”, which comes from the local native American name of “Coabana”, which means “great place”. By 1511 a Spanish colony was established. In time, the Spanish rule became unpopular resulting to political unrest. In 1898, as a result of the Spanish-American War, Spain relinquished its control of Cuba and the United States governed the country until 1902 when it gained nominal independence as a “de facto” United States protectorate. United States-backed Fulgencio Batista ruled and dominated the government of Cuba from 1933 until he was ousted due to open corruption and oppression in 1959 when a revolution led by Fidel Castro and guerilla leader Che Guevara, an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, thereby establishing
